Because you know what? Windham over there, a.k.a. Bray Wyatt, might need something to irritate and/or motivate him? Yeah. So first the Poll:

And with that out of the way? Okay, my apologies for being harsh but I was looking forward to some Wyatt, Uncle Howdy and Bliss weirdness at Wrestlemania, damn it. I'm not sure what happened, but here's my guesses. Educated hunches.

-- Maybe Windham legitimately got sick at a bad time. I don't know. The first reports I heard were that Windham had a finger injury or two, but that's not usually something you can't rest and recover from in 2-3 weeks. Ditto with a stomach virus. It just seems strange that nobody really knows why the guy behind Wyatt just quit?

-- Or maybe Lashley and Wyatt just couldn't work with each other. There did seem to be a HUGE personality conflict going on, with Bray Wyatt not wanting to do anything but his usual horror/cinematic style of match, where Lashley refused to do anything but a bare-bones beatdown of the kind he usually favors.

-- The Uncle Howdy presence didn't help matters, sure, given Lashley's track record of not taking kindly to head-games of ANY sort. But he had to know something like that was going to happen, he's not stupid. I don't know really. What I do understand, though, Is that I was asked to "lie for him" and "Can you keep a secret?" And as of right now I did both of those, a bit middling, but I did them, and for nothing? Yeah.

So I lied by pretending to give the secret away, saying "Oh, it's going to be a huge cinematic thing, and that's the issue: it was recorded weeks ago, it's in the can already and it's put a lot of people ON HOLD waiting for real time to catch up with 'Mania." I don't think people bought it but then again, nobody asked me, and I did spread quite a few lesser lies too.

As for the Damned Secret. Here it is: Fictional character Bray Wyatt is a fan of Fictional TV Station Local 58. This is a GIGANTIC clue as it regards Uncle Howdy, and Bray Wyatt's narrative. Or at least it WAS.

Here is a sample of Local 58 Broadcast material:

The hint here is the key to the narrative: in the Local 58 setting, The Moon is a living, cosmic horror type of entity, and the theme of that channel and its associated materials is that "the Moon will Eat the Earth." And people in that setting, some of them worship the moon, hoping they won't get devoured.

So where's the clues? The Main one reflects on Uncle Howdy. The resemblance isn't 100 percent clear in the mask, but in this new context, Uncle Howdy is supposed to be The Man in the Moon. This should be considered closely: who has routinely said "to the MOON!" in his promos? Who's intro is nearly identical in posture and body language to Uncle Howdy's?

Cameron Grimes. NOT Bo Dallas. Consider that the mainstream wrestling press on YouTube knows Grimes has been promoted to Main Roster, but "doesn't know what he's doing", they just know he's a) grown his hair out, and b) that he's "jacked", meaning extra muscular lately. Does that sound like the guy who attacked Bobby Lashley in Bray Wyatt's place?

The second clue is less obvious. The Moon Phase for tomorrow, April 1st, night one of Wrestlemania, is Waxing Gibbous, or the rising three-quarters phase right before the Full Moon. This could coincide with either the Return of The Fiend (whether it's Bray Wyatt or not) or Uncle Howdy's becoming his own force to be reckoned with, although it did look like Bray was trying a new, seventh character with the new Black Mask, and with the hint in the Uncle Howdy Weather Forecast during the Firefly Funhouse's tribute to Local 58. That clue was that the temperature ranges in all cities on that weather map were identical and showing the same seven-degree temperature spread. Seven, and not Wyatt 6.

So it LOOKED like, past tense, we were going to get either The Fiend, or a Fiend Alternate, with Bray, more insight into Uncle Howdy, in a match involving Bobby Lashley that could have been a banger, and all this with some Bliss on the side. But nah. Illness and maybe egos getting in the way.

Do I have more hunches? Sure, but they're less clear, and more in Bliss-fit country. And they assume a bit. Point is, someone had the whole world in his hands, and he choked. It happens. Maybe don't do it again? Or maybe do better at Wrestlemania Backlash: the Backlashening? The hell if I know. (*shrugs*)

“pillow talk” - a collection of conversations between you and matsukawa issei.

1. october 23rd, 1:03am.

“that was fun.” matsukawa props himself up on one elbow, lower half still covered by a disarray of blue dorm sheets.

you’re sitting on the edge of the bed, pulling your t-shirt back on, but you turn to look at him, smiling slightly. “fun?” 

“great. excellent. out of this world amazing,” he says teasingly. there’s a glint in his eye and a flush in his cheeks. 

“that’s what I thought.” you make to stand up, but matsukawa grabs your wrist before you can move another muscle. 

“you can stay,” he says, face strangely hopeful and childlike (a sharp contrast to the night’s earlier… activities). “if you want, I mean.” 

your body aches to climb back under the covers with him, to press yourself against his hot skin and let yourself fall asleep in his embrace… but what you have with matsukawa is new and fragile, and you refuse to close your fist on something delicate and shatter it in the process. 

“maybe next time. I have class in the morning.” advanced calculus, to be specific. hell on earth, to be even more specific. 

“will there be a next time?” there it is again. that hope. 

“if you’ll have me,” you say, rising from the mattress.

“I’ll do more than have you.” he grins, cocking his head. “I’ll take you.” 

and there it is — matsukawa issei, ladies and gents. you smile to yourself as you slip out of his room, committing the feel of his hands gripping your hips and his lips on yours to memory. 

2. october 27th, 4:36pm. 

you stay this time. it’s a weeknight, and there’s class in the morning again, but the bed is warm and matsukawa’s arm fits like it was made for you. he’s nervous, you can tell, what with the way his fingers shake slightly as they brush the hair from your eyes — but that’s okay. it’s endearing. cute, even. 

“hey,” he says, voice low and throaty. 

“hi,” you respond, turning your face to look at him, his sharp, angular face shaded even more dramatic by moonlight. he really is a little too pretty for his own good, you decide, running a light hand down his torso. his mouth twitches when your fingers skim over his waistband and back up again. 

“tease,” he sighs, and you laugh. 

“it’s what I’m best at,” you say. 

“among other things,” matsukawa concedes, grinning. you gasp and hit him lightly on the chest.

“you’re so dirty minded!” you scold, and he scoffs. 

“I’m the dirty minded one? listen sweetheart, twenty minutes ago you were —” 

you shut him up with a swift kiss on the lips, swallowing his indignant words as he chuckles somewhere in the back of his throat and pulls you on top of him. you slide your fingers into his mess of dark hair and smile into the kiss until he finally breaks away and begins dusting smaller kisses along your jaw and collarbone. 

“you know,” you breathe, trying to avoid gasping when matsukawa presses his mouth to that soft spot right below your neck, “you’re acting awfully boyfriend today, issei. you’d better be careful before I up and decide to make you mine.”

“maybe that’s what I want you do to,” he says without looking at you. 

you start in surprise, a small smile creeping onto your lips. “oh, really?” 

matsukawa unattaches himself from your neck and takes your face in his hands, staring up at you with a grin. “really.” 

“okay,” you say, and in response he squishes your cheeks and laughs. you roll your eyes and tug on his wrists until he lets go. “okay, boyfriend.”

“okay, girlfriend.” 

you’d never anticipated a relationship to fall into place so easily. but then again, with matsukawa, everything — everything from his sweet talk to his skin to his stupid pickup lines — is pretty damn smooth.

3. january 1st, 11:24pm.

“you have a nice nose,” he says, running a finger down its bridge. golden afternoon light slices through the gaps in his shutters, casting odd stripes across his face.

“I hate my nose.” you bite back a sheepish smile. “it’s weird.”

“no, it’s cute,” he insists, and despite yourself, your heart swells. maybe it’s silly, maybe it’s shallow, but nothing really beats having someone refute your insecurities, however insignificant they may be. “I’m the one with a weird nose.”

you sit straight up, nearly knocking him back. “you do not have a weird nose. I love your nose!” 

“I love your face.” matsukawa gently pulls you back down, gathering you into his chest so he can rest his chin on your shoulder. 

“well, it is a pretty nice face,” you say, and he huffs.

“you were supposed to say you love my face, too,” he whines in a small voice. you almost giggle at the thought of this six foot two giant baby-talking to you.

“I thought that was self-explanatory,” you say. “I like everything about you.”

matsukawa shoots you a dramatic glare, furrowing his brows. “yesterday you said you didn’t like my t-shirt.”

“it was a rick and morty t-shirt! I was morally obligated to disparage your fashion taste in that moment,” you say piously. 

“so you don’t like everything about me,” matsukawa sighs, pretending to wipe a tear from his eye. “my girlfriend is a liar.” 

“I like everything about you except for the fact that you like rick and morty,” you correct yourself. 

“I like everything about you except for the fact that you don’t like rick and morty,” matsukawa shoots back, and you let out an ugly guffaw. 

“alright, then. agree to disagree?”

before answering, he leans forward to give you a brief kiss that you return, enjoying the faint taste of spearmint on his lips. “you’ll come around eventually.” 

“I really won’t.”

“you will.”

“I won’t.”

“you won’t.”

“I will,” you say, and then — “wait, no. damn it, issei, I can’t believe that worked on me.”

“gotcha!” 

4. march 20th, 3:16am. 

“dude,” matsukawa says. “we should go out for ramen.”

“did you just call me dude?” you raise an incredulous eyebrow. 

“sorry,” he says, sitting upright and pulling on a shirt. “I meant babe. can we get ramen?”

“it’s 3am,” you say, catching the shirt he tosses to you and putting it on. “is there any place nearby that’s still open at this hour?” 

matsukawa whisks you out of bed, bridal style, and spins you around, ignoring your protestations as you attempt to scold him between giggles. when he finally sets you down you’re dizzy, clinging to him for balance. “obviously you don’t understand the ramen business. when the craving hits, it hits, and these guys know that. that’s why there’s a 24 hour ramen-ya near every college campus in the country.” 

“then,” you say, blinking hard as the room comes back into focus. “I say we go eat.” 

“let zem eat ramen?” matsukawa says in a phony french accent. you want to roll your eyes but you can’t quite bring yourself to do so. he’s too damn charming about it. 

“let zem eat ramen,” you repeat, and he laughs, rumpling your hair before grabbing his keys off the bedside table. 

“you’re adorable.”

“I’m a legal adult,” you sigh. “why do you insist on calling me cute? I’m sexy.”

“you’re cute and sexy,” he agrees, opening the door for you. “the two are not mutually exclusive.” 

“fancy words.”

“I’m just trying to impress you,” he says with an obnoxious wink. 

5. april 4th, 1:58am. 

“do you think there’s life in space?” 

you’re lying side by side next to matsukawa, both staring up at his dorm room ceiling, where a handful of plastic stars glow in the dark. 

he snickers. “you mean, like, martians? little green men with antennae?”

“sure,” you say, ignoring his jab. “or maybe enormous space whales swimming somewhere deep in the cosmos. galactic empires of cyborgs and robot servants. train stations that take you from star to star.” 

“that reminds me,” he says. you feel him slip his fingers into your hand. “we should watch star wars together sometime.” 

“you avoided the question,” you complain, and he laughs. 

“sorry,” he says. “I’ve never given much thought to huge space whales or interplanetary train stations.”

“you’ve never wondered might be out there? never wanted to fly to the moon and see what there is to see?” the thought is alien (pun intended) to you. how could anyone look into the star speckled sky and see anything other than a mass of worlds waiting to be explored? 

“I don’t need to. kinda have everything I could ever want here on earth already.” matsukawa shrugs, flashing you a grin. “good friends. perfect girlfriend. a really excellent ramen shop down the street.” 

“and that’s all you need?”

“that’s all I need,” he agrees, and you stay silent, scooting closer to press yourself into matsukawa’s larger frame. maybe he has a point. you count over your blessings in your head: good friends, perfect boyfriend, a really excellent ramen shop down the street. even space whales can’t really compare, you decide, sneaking a glance at issei only to find he’s already looking down at you with a soft smile. 

and maybe that’s enough. maybe it’s enough to have someone who loves you and your flaws, someone who lets you borrow his dumb graphic tees and never lets you pay for your own dinner. maybe what you have here with matsukawa issei, feet on the ground and hands intertwined, is enough.

A snowy summer

Part 5: June + Part 6: July

Wow, rl has keep me occupied so much that I almost forgot that I haven’t finished this series yet. I think I intended to make June and July into a single post and separate April and May, I don’t know it ended up like this, but let’s roll with it.

Disclaimer: I try to keep things objective (if I include my personal opinion, it’s in cursive and in brackets), but I’m biased because of the XZ friendly content I’m usually exposed to and by my own views of their situation. Open to discussion, but please make sure you’ve enough information to do so.

In June and July there were some incidents that really had me staring at my laptop speechless, brain completely fried by what I was reading. I suppose I don’t have so much energy to invest myself in issues like those (I have enough with my own rl problems, thank you very much), but still... wtf.

School uniforms

In recent June, the welfare project done by his fans got questioned for a project. It was about some school uniforms that they donated to a school, in collaboration with another organization (BYH Foundation).

However, it was questioned because the uniform has the letter 赞 (zan) in it. It means “to approve, to support or to praise” and it’s also the internet slang for “like” (thumbs up). Because it sounds similar to xz’s name, it’s often used as a substitution for his name in internet posts. In fact, in an interview, he was asked if he preferred “xiao (little) zhan” or “xiao zan”, and he said both were fine. Some commercials use phrases with this character to refer to him.

The antis accused XZ’s fans of trying to use the students to promote their celebrity. After this, BYH Foundation issued an apology, because of “their lack of consideration”. They had wanted the word to mean “positive”, and as a wish that the children grow up healthy and optimistic. But because of the misunderstanding, the foundation expressed their regret and took back all uniforms and other materials.

Faced with this, netizens again expressed their disagreement. “Why take away the clothes if the children liked them? Why must people who complain always be right? How disappointing!”

(Personal opinion time: so… giving the uniforms is criticized. Taking them away is criticized. Can someone tell me what can they do that it won’t be criticized?)

Charity in Yunnan

In mid-June, XZ participated in a charity event in Yunnan, promoting agricultural products. XZ’s fans support association changed their name to XZ Audio and Video official w/ibo, centering their efforts in promoting his works.

His activities in Yunnan were accompanied by an interview.

Offering legal help to those affected by cyberbullying

On July 1st, XZ studio issued another statement. I think we are familiar with this one, since it’s quite recent.

This issue began on June 22nd, when a w/ibo user berated XZ for not “controlling” his fans: “… and, by letting them do as they please, you let them think that there was nothing wrong in what they were doing. Today is Fathers’ Day, and your fans dare to curse my mother and my late father. I’ll not let this go. I’ll boycott you, and if I consider it necessary, I’ll report it to the police. I’ll leave this post here, so we can come back to it and look at the source of the problem. You reap what you sow, you can’t blame me on this.” She posted a few screenshots of some people insulting her parents.

A few fans wrote to her:

“Excuse me, I’m sorry for disturbing you, I know you don’t like XZ, but XZ has been leading us fans, and I’ve seen that your account isn’t XZ friendly. Every well intentioned critic, we’ll take it, but I hope you won’t involve XZ because of the words of others, there are a lot of rational fans out there.”

The user answered:

“From the beginning to the end, he has never said: ‘don’t report maliciously, don’t insult and humiliate others, don’t curse other people’s parents, don’t look for others’ private info, don’t threaten others’. Has he said them? He hasn’t. He never elaborates, hums and haws, pass over these topics. I’ll tell you, today’s matter, I must see an apology. Either from the ones that cursed my parents or from XZ on their behalf. If there’s not apology, I’ll chase this matter to the end.”

This user released a week later a document called “Assessment on the value and risk of XZ’s fans”. She took the data from several platforms, and analysed them, getting statistics about the type of XZ’s fans. This report depicted a very negative view of his fans.

This was a very controversial issue. The heart of the controversy is that there’s no evidence that the netizen who cursed her parents is XZ’s fan. And even if they “were”, nowadays many people are deliberately posing as XZ’s fans to insult and abuse others in order to frame him.

However, with her report, the people who don’t know the heart of the matter got more ammo to insult and humiliate XZ. She updated her post, saying that she had been being investigated, that someone had tried to get her address and name, so in the comments, more and more people blamed XZ for the issue. XZ’s teams then offered their help in the form of legal advice and lawyers to help her get legal support.

The user took the offer and agreed to receive legal advice. XZ’s studio then posted their update (the one linked in the first paragraph of this section), rejecting all king of cyber bullying and offering help to protect the rights of the netizens affected by cyber violence. The Studio also spoke clearly: they won’t tolerate XZ’s fans abusing other netizens, nor people posing as XZ’s fans to attack others.

The “stolen” account

On July 11, XZ’s Audio and Video official w/ibo posted an official apology. This time, the issue was this one: a w/ibo user had “passed away” due to mental illness (depression, the user followed the supertopic about this particular ailment and had posted a few times about it). However, after their death, their account was active again, and began posting about XZ.

People attacked the user for using a deceased person’s account (comments were like “don’t you know the history of the owner of the account you’re using?”), and consequently, all of the content in that account was deleted.

The same afternoon, XZ’s Audio and Video official w/ibo issued their apology. They contacted w/ibo, and asked the user to restore the deleted content and to respect the deceased.

This was also controversial, since they couldn’t know for sure that the one who bought the account is a fan of XZ. Because of this, XZ’s fans were attacked again. W/ibo issued a post declaring that the account had been accessed through the same device from last year to present, so the account hadn’t been stolen, and they continue to investigate it.

In summary: this time, XZ’s fans had apologized too quickly. This user was someone who used 3 different IPs and 3 different accounts. They had followed the “depression” topic, posted a few things and went silent for a while, making people think they had succumbed to the illness. Then, using the same account, they started posting about XZ, making people think that the account had been stolen, and manipulated other people’s sense of justice and compassion to defame XZ.

W/ibo took the initiative and blocked all of their accounts.

(Okay, when I actually read about what happened, I was like... wtf. Seriously wtf. This is some plot going on over there, I thought this kind of defamation plots only happened in Chinese historical dramas. I... really don’t get it. I’m speechless still.)

W/ibo and XZ Studio Conference

The topic of w/ibo and XZ studio conference went on hot search on July 14, in which, they talked about fan guidance and management:

“W/ibo believes that influential public figures and celebrities should bear the responsibility of guiding and restraining fan’s behaviour, essentially through the fans’ group. But in last months, because of failed guidance and reactions, all kind of fan groups had a disruptive behaviour online, causing a harmful impact on society.

W/ibo believes that celebrities’ studios and companies should reinforce the guidance and restrain over the fans. To those who pretend to be a certain person’s fan, they should be reported and people should collaborate with the platform in its management of the issue. We can’t ignore them if these people’s actions are suspected to be illegal, and protect our rights, fulfilling legal responsibilities.

XZ’s studio has expressed their agreement with W/ibo’s recommendations, and expressed their intention to increase their level of collaboration and support of this platform’s management.”

The announcement was ended by a statement on how the latest incident has showed a very ugly and harmful part of the society, and that everyone should collaborate to improve the society and Internet. It also included a list of accounts that were banned for fake rumours and leading other fans to arguments. 

This was accompanied by an apology by XZ Studio.

(This is what some anons asked me about on their asks. I hope you can all read between the lines to get what was the deal about this one.)

From start to finish, we all can see that the platform has a lot of responsibility to bear here. That’s something people in China have also pointed out. However, XZ and his team can only nod, and bear with it, because while there is only one platform that has all the right conditions, there are a lot of more celebrities. They have to rely on it for a lot of things, so they can’t just end things with them.

So last week, his studio issued a statement that said:

“This studio appeals again:

NO entering any kind of votes, control ourselves with our comments and not calling other to participate in events.

We reject mutual insulting and abusing, don’t start group conflicts.

Don’t go over your own economic possibilities to support projects, works and commercial products.

Make sure to take care of your studies and jobs first, before following a celebrity’s projects or music.

We hope that everyone can make the most of their own lives, have independent thinking. We hope that we can all go together towards a brighter future, and give more positive energy through our actions.”

The studio called the fans to stop voting him and placing him at the top of the charts for a while, so things can cool down definitely, in my opinion. And yet, he still topped as one of the most successful endorser, from March to July (it’s really a trend that hasn’t stopped, even after 2/27. In March, two weeks after 2/27, he even topped as one of the top celebrities in w/ibo anyway). 

I heard that people kept voting for him like crazy, because they didn’t want the general public to think that he wasn’t popular. However, facts remain that he is popular among his fans, but less neutral in the general public (I’ll explain this in my last post).

That’s why it’s going to be very important how his next project is received by the general public.

Story [ TW // implied abuse and homophobia ]: Born in a rich family, all Adonis wanted was being a dancer. His father ripped it as soon as he saw it. He said only "faggots" wore that. Also, his father got mad because he had noticed his son has started using purple-ish grey makeup on his eyelids. And everyone knows what happened afterwards. His father's wife did nothing to ever help him, she just stood with what his father said. Adonis's biological mother died giving birth to him. Funny, how after Adonis's first steps inside the city, a golden, sharp arrow pierced his chest. Adonis's stand was a delicate, orange colored, humanoid creature in white ballet shoes. It looked angelic. But its kicks were hell. They discovered this when Okuyasu tried to touch his hair. Oh boy. Adonis's stand manifested as if he was an expert already, and with a cry that sounded like "CHACHACHACHACHA", the poor guy was on the floor. His wound had healed.

"What are you, precisely?" he asked his stand, when the Nijimura brothers let him go because he was no use.

"CHA CHA!"

"Okay, nevermind." he huffed, when walking towards his new house, he saw a green haired, handsome guy, on the porch of a huge house, sketching something on a notebook. And he couldn't help but notice how that drawing guy's gaze was on him.

Rohan had never seen such a beautiful creature. Big purple eyes, pointy nose, plump lips, a perfect pale skin and beautifully straight carrot colored, long - really long, actually - hair. Broad shoulders and well toned arms, alternating with a wasp waist and right after, beautiful hips. Just by looking at him, Rohan could feel a sensat- WE'LL BE BACK AFTER A BREAK -

Curious, Adonis got closer to the mangaka.

"See something you like?" Rohan immediately understood from his accent, that he was in front of a foreigner. A foreign cutie.

"I'm pretty sure I've never seen you before, in Morioh Cho." Kishibe Rohan wasn't down for pleasantries. "Become my model or perish." a model? Was he an artist? And Adonis thought Morioh Cho was a calm city. This offer flustered him a bit.

"Yeah, I know, I'm pretty." The choice of adjective caught the mangaka's attention. In a positive way, though. Pretty. "What's in it for me, honey?" Sly, sly bitch, Adonis. Rohan held back a terrible blush. How could a random thug call him, Kishibe Rohan, honey?

"Are you serious right now? You want to know if I'll pay you? For just fucking staying still?" At this answer, Adonis raised an eyebrow, turned tail and started walking away. As soon as Rohan's eyes ran from his pale neck, to the belly his bordeaux crop top left uncovered, and imagined the legs hidden behind those kinda tight, elegant black trousers, the mangaka cleared his voice. "I'll pay you." those words fucking slipped from his mouth. Kishibe Rohan had never paid anyone for standing still.

Adonis turned around, already far from the porch of Rohan's house, but not enough to pretend he didn't hear him. "Now that's what I like, artist boy." Only a thing Adonis would have wanted. For Rohan to see him with his white coat on. The one he used in Russia, where it was quite colder than Morioh Cho. A long, white coat, decorated with candid fur - not real fur, Adonis is highly against this. -

Rohan grew possessive of his model. Adonis couldn't care less. He still paid the rent for his house - with a little help from Rohan's payment -, but most of the time was spent in the mangaka's house, moving, posing on a couch, against a wall, or even just standing. The mangaka started buying clothes for him. And even if the russian boy was good at hiding it, he was growing so fond of his artist. So stunned by his gaze lingering around his body to transfer it on paper. So enamored with his ways.

Also, Rohan named his model's stand. Sugar Plum. Like The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, from The Nutcracker. He liked how flexible his elegant body was. So beautiful. So gorgeous. So pretty.

Adonis didn't need his family anymore. He had started his adventure in Morioh Cho. He had met love... in Morioh Cho. Or so he thought. Until he started needing attention from someone else...

Canonically, When Does the NY Special Take Place?

So, in today’s episode of “LycoRogue way overanalyzes things”, I think ZagToon has actually given us some pretty decent evidence to more-or-less lock-in when this special takes place.

The key to narrowing it all down relies on this quick shot that the Miraculous team deemed worthy to grace us with:

This is Adrien’s bodyguard starting up a meditation app just as the flight from Paris to NYC is about to take off. This, plus the sunset showcased in the next few scenes, will help us start to narrow it all down.

So, let’s actually start with their flight. Based on a quick Google search for “fights from Paris to NYC” I got this list of potentials in November (yes, just about all of them will then give you a pop-up stating that flights are restricted to/from US because of COVID, but we’ll ignore that right now).

The airline the animators created for the special has a design that seems to mimic Air France.

So, we’ll go with Air France’s listed nonstop flight - given that Alya mentions the “looooong” flight, we don’t see or hear anything about layovers, and everyone passes out, we’ll presume it’s a nonstop flight - and say that the class was on that plane for 8hrs and 40mins, more-or-less.

Okay. So we have the flight taking off at 15:55 (3:55pm). It is roughly an 8hr and 40 minute flight. This brings the class to 00:35 (12:35am) their time. At the latest, if we go with the 8hr 55min flight listed above, they’re arriving at 00:50 (12:50am). Add in the roughly 30min drive from JFK international airport in Queens to where they’re staying somewhere presumably around midtown Manhattan, and it’s past 1am their time. No wonder Ms. Mendeleiev wants them to go directly to bed when they get to their rooms!

Anyway, back on track. So, if they’re landing somewhere between 12:35am and 12:50am their time, that means it’s between 6:35pm (18:35) and 6:50pm (18:50) Eastern Time.

Now, we won’t get into things like “how the heck did they see the sunset on the plane and it was still happening as they drove into Manhattan when it probably takes an hour to make it through disembarking and Customs and weaving through a crowded JFK alone” because there are superheroes for friggen everything in this universe canon, so we can pretend 9/11 never happened and airport chaos isn’t as bad.

Plus, the “sunset” Adrien and Marinette watched was still mostly above the cloud line, so it was closer to “golden hour”.

Now, the attack on the plane from an American supervillain and the quick capture by the main NYC/East Coast superhero team pinpoints the flight as nearing its end. They’re probably only a couple of miles out from the coast. Especially since Majestia welcomes their arrival, the flight is probably close enough to being over American soil.

Further proof: the flight is making its decent into JFK as TechnoPirate is handed over to the authorities. Since the superhero team was flying faster than the plane’s cruising speed, it shouldn’t have taken them long to land and hand him over to the probably already awaiting SWAT team.

Okay, so we have established that the plane is probably coming into JFK International between 6:35pm and 6:50pm ET, and that they are in the Golden Hour leading to the official sunset as the plane descends. Which is also why the sun isn’t close enough to the horizon for an official “sunset” quite yet as they drive through what is presumably Broadway.

I mean, it’s not crucial that it’s Broadway, but it looks like they’re aiming for it to be...

Although this one marquee says “Roadway Musical”, so....

BACK ON TOPIC!

Okay, so it’s closing in on 7pm ET - or is closer to 7:20pm if you go with the 6:50 arrival and add in the 35min drive - and it’s the Golden Hour. Based on where the sun is, I’d maybe peg the sun to be officially setting (as in, touching the horizon and sinking below it) between 7:15 and 7:45pm (19:15 and 19:45).

Plug THAT information into timeanddate.com set for Manhattan, and you’re looking at the first week of September or even the last week of August. 

Alternatively, you could argue that it could also be the last week of March/first week of April.

HOWEVER, when the class arrives at the hotel and Marinette and Adrien are first trapped by the dreaded Automatic Doors, we do see this shop sign in the background sporting a jack-o-lantern design. Halloween-themed stores like this are usually seasonal and don’t open until the end of August/start of September. Spirit, the largest Halloween-themed company in the US, has its “pop-up” stores open late-August through early-November. So we’re probably looking at those September dates over the March ones.

Especially since we also get this establishing shot of the class pulling up to the museum and the second show of Adrienette vs Automatic Doors where we clearly see that some of the trees are already changing color. This solidifies that the French-American Friendship Week is indeed during autumn. 

Based on that evidence, the first week of September does seem a bit early. First of all, leaves don’t start changing in NY until the last week of September/1st two weeks of October, depending on how dry/cold the weather has been. So, what if we take the dialogue at face value and ignore that “sunset” is when the sun touches the horizon? What if we take it as “the start of Golden Hour when the sky becomes more of that orange hue”? In that case, we’re going back to the projected arrival time and using THOSE times against that one website.

The US premiere - which ended up being the world premiere - of this special was on September 25, which had a sunset time of 6:47pm. It could be a nice, neat way to have the air date be the canon date of this special and the class’s arrival within NYC. We can even bump it to the premiere on Disney Channel France and have it be Saturday, September 26th, with a sunset time of 6:45pm ET. This way it makes sense that Marinette wouldn’t already be with her class leading up to the bus departure, since it would be a Saturday and non-school day, as well as why Luka would be available to give her that ride at about 3pm (15:00) instead of being in school/just getting out of school himself.

Also, if Adrien still has the same schedule he did back in “Copycat”, he has fencing practices on Fridays.

We know that post-practice, Adrien tells Kagami that his class is going to NYC “tomorrow”, which would seem to confirm that the class is flying out Saturday afternoon. Kagami’s “I’ll see you tomorrow” and mention of "give us more time to practice” doesn’t necessarily mean fencing class and instead probably explains what they do for “dates” in this awkward “are we dating now?” limbo they’re in.

So, what do you think? Is their NYC trip from Saturday, September 26th through Monday, September 28th? Should we give more attention to the actual sunset times and have the trip be the first week of September? 

Regardless of how we time the sunset, this trip IS in autumn, but it’s also after everything that’s happened in the first 3 seasons, which most likely means this is the start of a new school year. How do we feel about the entire class lucking into being in Miss Bustier’s class again; no new students and not losing anyone to a different class? What about the fact that Marinette and Adrien have officially been Ladybug and Chat Noir for a full year, and that Paris has been surviving Hawk Moth attacks apparently daily for that year? What about the fact that Adrien’s birthday is probably right around the corner again? You think they’ll do another episode focusing on that and how it differs from his birthday in “The Bubbler”?

Harmless Prank My Ass

In celebration of April Fools, I made a rather shitty fanfic but anyone who reads this hope yall enjoy my mediocre writing (it was 4 pages long in google docs -- its long right)

Confessions to your crushes seem like a generic, recurring way of pranking someone, especially during April 1st. It’s April Fools Day, harmless pranks are everywhere. Pranks that involve coming out, hurting someone and the like aren’t tolerated during this day, but what if it sounded so genuine you nearly forget its April Fools? Can you actually say, “it’s just a prank bro!” when feelings are involved? They all tell us to not play with other people’s feelings, and today shouldn’t be an exception to that rule. Every word you say holds weight in other people’s minds.

That’s what he failed to do, being a goofy, happy-go-lucky guy that he is. He is not an ignorant though, he just wanted to play a harmless prank one of his co-workers. He’d plan it so perfectly it’s not bound to fail, or so he thought.

Today was now April 1st, everyone else in Buzzfeed is already playing pranks on anyone they find on the office. Someone had put an air horn on one of the office chairs, waiting to be “blown” by whoever sat on that chair. There were no pranks done on Steven when he walked on towards his spot towards the back. He peacefully sank on the office chair, thinking of the perfect time to execute the planned prank. It wasn’t now, that he was sure, since the person he wanted to place the prank on was nowhere near his spot on the office.

“Must be shooting for Eating Your Feed. Oh well.”

So Steven started researching for new ideas for Worth It. Lately they haven’t shot anything for a new season, and the fans are currently trying to get hold of them because they’ve been away for so long. What’s more, the fans fear that they might not actually come back, due to the fact that Steven now lives in New York; they think that moving back and forth from LA to New York would be quite a hassle for him, hence the reason why they fear the series being discontinued. He’d actually reassured them of their comeback though, but it’s not about food. At least, they’d be getting a Worth It season.

While scrolling away on the iMac, he’d seen his target exiting from the elevator, looking all tired and sweaty. Some co-workers wanted to prank him but he just passed them by, now sinking to the soft, comfy office chair with a sigh.

“Rough day?”

“Yeah.”

Well this wasn’t the perfect moment to do the prank.

“Wanna eat out later?” He had an extremely goofy smile that seemed to radiate happiness to whoever sees it. That smile that immediately sent butterflies fluttering in on Andrew.

“Sure, why not?”

The plan was already in execution, little did he know. Andrew was completely unaware of what was going to happen later, sadly, he can’t prepare himself for it. He had a plan of his own too, but preferred not to do it today as he deemed the day was not appropriate for it. It’s April Fools Day after all, not the best time to admit what you actually feel for someone.

Hours later, the plan was still commencing. The two fancy boys already got out of the office, having a conversation on where to eat. Since the start of Worth It, they’ve noticed their palate changing, they haven’t been getting much fast food lately. They’ve been getting “exquisite” foods but still on an affordable price. Today, they just decided to eat at Shake Shack, since they can’t think of any place to go to.

Shake Shack was bumbling with people, as usual. Steven told Andrew to get seats for them. He just shrugged and went to the far back, away from chatters and noisy kids. While waiting in line, Steven already composed himself for this. It wasn’t the most perfect time but this time, there is an opportunity to do the plan as followed.

Once he’d ordered, the both of them just sat there and ate, no conversations transpired. The atmosphere seemed really different, something was off with one of them.

“You’re unusually quiet today.” Andrew observed, taking a curly fry in his mouth. “Not used to it.”

“I just...have a lot on my mind right now.” He excused. “I want to tell something to this person but I don’t know if they’ll be fine with it…”

Andrew took a sip of the milkshake, “Well, you’ll never know unless you do it.”

“Yeah, you’re right.”

Silence soon followed, neither of them spoke a thing or two. Steven was still doing his pretend nervousness while Andrew just continued with being his casual self.

“Stop that.”

Steven has been absentmindedly forking the fries. “Oh, sorry.  It’s just that…”

“What? Still nervous?”

“Kinda…”

Small talk won’t do.

“About the whole thing earlier...well, how should I put it…” Steven wasn’t pretending anymore, he was actually fidgeting right now. He’d went back to forking the fries. Something had settled within himself, doubtful thoughts swirling inside of his mind. “I should...man up and say it, right?”

“Yeah, I mean, that was what a decent guy would do.”

Steven took a long sigh before saying, “I...kinda like you.” He’d patiently waited for any kind of reaction that would emanate from his friend but he only saw confusion. Moments later, there was a slight relief that was present in his green eyes and a smile ceased to reveal itself. Soon enough, it was replaced with a frown.

“Honestly...I didn’t...expect that.” Andrew whispered the last sentence. “Maybe it was mutual after all.”

“That’s the whole point of jokes, dude! You don’t expect them!” Steven was giggling out of himself, unaware of what is actually transpiring before him. His friend looked at him sadly, ceasing any kind of unwanted feelings to appear, any kind of words that threatened to be spoken out.

Andrew stood up almost suddenly, earning a look from other people. He didn’t give a damn anymore, that was sure. He felt mad now, mad at Steven, which he never felt not until now. The silver haired guy was still unaware of everything else, not until Andrew started to take small steps away from their spot. He’d finally exited Shake Shack with a deep frown on his features, still not believing that everything, every word was just a joke. Of course, Steven was now aware that he’d left him alone, so he chased after his friend. Luckily, he was just still outside of the establishment.

“Those kinds of pranks should never be done in the first place, Steven. Playing with other people’s feelings is not a healthy habit, and you of all people should know that.” He seethed as soon as he felt Steven behind him. “You could potentially hurt someone...permanently.”

“P-Permanently?”

“Just like how other people would have trust issues because someone decided to play them like a fucking ragdoll.” He faced him. “Do you understand what I’m saying?!”

So this was the unsettling feeling that he felt earlier. Steven knew he shouldn’t have done this, but still he did. What the hell was wrong with him, anyway? Now, his friend’s gone mad, and the reasons were still unclear to him. Sure, he was angry because feelings got played on but is that it? There was something with the way these words were said.

“S-Sorry...it was supposed to be harmless prank…”

“Harmless prank?! How was that harmless?! Okay, fine, you didn’t hurt anyone physically, but you’ve hurt me emotionally! That still counts as harmful!”

“Why are you getting so aggressive about it?!” It was now Steven’s turn to raise his voice. He was still confused after all, and the only way to clear this up was to ask a question, but he didn’t intend for it to sound that way.

“You wouldn’t even need to know because you never take things seriously.” He snapped, causing Steven to let out tears that he’d been holding back since then.

“You didn’t need to go that far...I only wanted to know your reason…”

He sighed, “Would you take it seriously if I told you right now,” he started wiping those tears off of Steven’s cheeks, “that I actually thought that what you told me was...hmm, mutual?”

Instead of understanding the situation, Steven only got more confused. “Mutual? What?”

“What I’m saying was I thought we liked each other. You know...more than this?”

Steven seemed to have stopped crying now, finally coming to a realization that Andrew likes him.

“The...love type of like or…”

“That type. What else?” Andrew chuckled. “You fancy, silly boy.”

He flicked Steven’s forehead, and kissed it right after. “Maybe I ought to say I love you, instead of I like you.”

The importance of budgeting

For a while I’ve been using a spreadsheet to monitor my budget and keep track of my expenses. It’s my one thing that I’m the most grown-up about and I get excited when I tell people about it because it’s something I think everyone should do.

This spreadsheet gives you a perspective on where your money goes, helps you stay on track (for the most part), carries your balances over from week to week and has the power to give you hope or depress you depending on your state of financial affairs. For the sake of this example, let’s pretend it’s the hope-giving kind. Even if it turns out to be depressing, it’ll give you an idea of where you can troubleshoot problem areas.

In this example, let’s pretend this represents a two-income household where each person is paid on Friday and that their philosophy is that all the money they respectively make gets pooled together for their expenses and that any remainder becomes part of their financial cushion or savings.

Each person’s check and each bill (row 1) is noted by the (approximate, or exact where appropriate) date that it is due. If you’re starting your financial week on payday, these are the bills that should come out of those checks. At the end of the week, any remainder is carried over into the next pay week. This allows you to see your base monthly expenditures.

With B1 and C1 being the approximate monthly income based on a 4-payweek cycle, [T1] is the approximate remainder of their income once their monthly needs of columns E-S are calculated.

There’s a happy surprise, though. If you’re budgeting based on a 4-payweek monthly income, there will be times where you’ll get an extra check within a calendar month (In this example, it occurs May ‘19, August ‘19, November ‘19, January ‘20, May ‘20, July ‘20, October ‘20, etc. it depends on when your pay dates fall when you set up your own spreadsheet). Squirrel that money away if you can. You weren’t budgeting for it so it’s extra.

“Carryover” would be any potential leftover income and that balance will update on the next pay week. This is represented here by the Sum in Column D being equal to the Sum in Column T from the preceding line [D4, =SUM(T3), D5=T4, D6=T5, etc]. After the formulas are entered, you can click on the bottom right corner of the cell and drag down the column and it’ll repeat the formula for every line so you don’t have to enter each one individually.

Persons A & B decided to start tracking their money before their payday on April 19th of this sheet and to begin they have $159.21 in their bank account [T3]. They both get paid on Friday, their bank balance [T3, =SUM(B3:S3)] carries over into the next row as D4: [Formula: =SUM(T3)]. The only thing coming out of the April 19th pay week is their $200 car payment, $60 for gas, $125 for food for the week, and they’re spending $500 to repaint their living room and put in some shelves. That leaves them with 474. HOWEVER, and this is the important thing to remember, that amount is not expendable or available income. They’ll need some of that 474 to carryover to the week of April 26th because they have rent due, child support payments, insurance, cable, etc coming out. After those bills are paid, they’re remaindered with 272. THAT is their “cushion”.

***The lowest amount within a 4-5 week cycle gives you an idea of your financial cushion from month to month. If they don’t spend any more than the 272 during the month of April, they won’t be overdrawn.***

The main line of this spreadsheet (row 2) shows how much they budget for each bill in its respective column. Some amounts can be exact (like car or loan payments that never vary) and some can be estimated based on personal history (utility amounts, gas and food costs, miscellaneous personal expenses). For the fluctuating expenses, I always overbudget. If I regularly pay around $100 a month for utilities, I budget $120. “It’s better to have and not need than to need and not have.” If you spend around $50 every time you fill up your car, budget $60. When the bill is paid, you can update that cell with the exact amount. I fill the color in the cell with a light gray to show that I paid the bill, and you can check your account or add a comment with any confirmation codes you may have been given. When the amount is deducted from my bank account, because sometimes it takes time to process or the bank hasn’t taken the money out of your account yet, then I shade it dark gray. If there’s a difference between my bank account and what the spreadsheet says, I know “okay, this light gray bill that I paid hasn’t come out of my bank account yet.”

Persons A & B’s rent comes out on the 1st of May. You want to allocate that expense the week before the rent is due, so you substract that amount for the pay week of April 26. Person B owes child support every two weeks, allocate that amount. Utilities are due around the 15th, Insurance and cable are due at the end of the month. Repeat that for subsequent months. And do the same for any other bills, allocate your budgeted amounts to be deducted from the pay week before they are due. Ideally, the amount in column T at the end of the current pay week (Thursday night before you get paid) will mirror your bank account. Any differences in expenses (you went out to eat, bought snacks from the vending machine, shopped for new clothes, had to buy a new battery for your car, etc) can be added up and entered into the miscellaneous column. I usually add a “comment” in those cells with the cost breakdown of those expenses. “2.65 vending, 29.97 shirt, 14.11 Panera” and show the total of $46.73 of those expenses in the miscellaneous column.

You can also use the miscellaneous column to plan ahead for things you know you’re going to have to pay. You know your oil change is going to be due around a certain date. So and so’s birthday is coming up. In-laws are coming to visit and will probably want to eat out a few times while they’re in town. You have a vacation coming up. In this example, Persons A & B budgeted $500 for paint and shelving. Put those expenses in the miscellaneous column on the spreadsheet. It gives you an idea of what kind of hit your wallet is going to take after a major expense and how long it will take to financially recover from that expense. Or if you can afford it to begin with.

If you really want to get nutty, you can even plan major life expenses. In this spreadsheet, Persons A & B should have over $40,000 in savings by February of 2021 (allowing for a safety cushion of $9,000 in whatever expenses may come between now and then). They can decide to pay cash for a new car, put a down payment on a house, pay off a loan, take a trip around the world, whatever.

Maybe person A or B loses their job. So you erase the income column for them beyond the date of their last paycheck. As the numbers in column T dwindle down, you know what timeframe you have to find another job and still be financially solvent. Then when you’ve found that job, add in the new income after you start (wait until your direct deposit kicks in, naturally. Never add non-direct deposit funds into the spreadsheet until they are in, and available, in your bank account).

Maybe you want to squirrel away money in a savings account separate from your checking. Deduct that as spent income on the spreadsheet in a miscellaneous column (or add your own “Savings” column) and start a new sheet with your savings balance. If you don’t “see” it on the spreadsheet then you won’t be tempted to include it, so the savings stays where it’s supposed to. If you need to dip into it for an emergency, add it in an empty or miscellaneous cell as income the week that you need it and don’t forget to subtract it from your savings spreadsheet.

Even when I was living paycheck to paycheck and I’d end a week with $1.31 as my carryover balance, this method has been helpful to me. And if I didn’t have money for groceries, I knew which week I’d need to plan to hit up the food pantry for sustenance (and there’s no shame in that. That’s what it’s for).

You can add columns where you need to, the formulas should automatically update. Like I said, I’ve been using this for years and it’s been a great tool for keep me focused and on track with my financial needs. I hope it helps you.

So, you’ve probably all seen that right now I’m having a pretty shitty time. I have not been in the right place emotionally or physically to share my latest plot twist, and I’m still not really, but here are the basics.

Last Thursday, whilst I was staying with my parents in Swansea, my suprapubic catheter blocked. We tried to change it, but couldn’t get it back in. We were rushed to the surgical assessment unit, where ironically someone who works with my specialist urologist treated me. Despite masses of drugs, determination, swearing and screaming, we had to accept defeat. My catheter site in my tummy had closed. The drs were shocked it had worked at all for the last few weeks, since the incident with the guide wire. They were also shocked I’d been up and walking around; the site, and my bladder, is incredibly traumatised. It was full of damage, granulation and scar tissue. Because I literally cannot urinate without a tube, they had to put an indwelling urethral catheter in. It was horrifically painful, but thankfully it’s working great, for now. However it presents a multitude of serious issues... and this entire situation raises lots of serious questions for my future. Previously, bladder removal was an option on the table, but we had time. We had time to think, to try other things, and I had a quality of life. Now, that time, that quality of life, is vastly diminished. Bladder removal is pretty much my best and only option at this point. I do not say this lightly; there is a very high risk I will not survive the operation. I know it’s not a quick or easy fix; it’s a long, painful, difficult, terrifying fix. But it’s a fix.

To really top things off, my Botox in my bladder has worn off. This is enough on its own to render me a non functional mess. Combined with the healing bladder trauma and literal hole in my tummy, plus the adjustment to the new tube, I have been in agony. We have had to increase my meds. I’m still not very functional rn; I have terrible brain fog caused by the pain and the meds. Everything hurts, and my mobility is limited.

And the final straw? After watching my documentary, my palliative care team have confirmed I’m suffering extremely severe chronic spasms (yes, more severe than they even realised)... but they have also informally diagnosed me with an incredibly rare form of epilepsy, where you are awake and aware during extreme seizures.

This is both good and bad news, to me. Good, because perhaps now they can actually treat the really big, horrible, life threatening fits/spasms (it’s likely they drive/cause one another, and the reason I’m sometimes so poorly is because I’m fitting and spasming at the same time.) better. It’s bad, because a part of me is just SO ANGRY that nobody found this earlier. I’m not cross at one person, just at the situation in general.

We will not be able to start the anti epilepsy drugs for a few months, til my new anti spasm drugs are stable.

I am just, spectacularly angry with the universe right now. And I am sad, and scared, and in pain.

It feels like so many options for my future are being taken away, and so many choices are being forced.

I am not okay right now, guys.

I am incredibly grateful to my absolutely amazing clinical and care teams, who have gone, and continue to go, above and beyond in their care and support of me. I am incredibly grateful to my amazing family and friends for taking such wonderful care of me (as always) and for making me smile even during my darkest moments.

I have a neurology appointment today, Paliative care in a few weeks, and my appointment with my specialist neuro-urologist on 1st April. Decisions and plans will be Meade over the best month as to where we go from here.

I am going back to see my psychologist today. I need the support if I want to get through this with my already wobbly sanity in tact.

The one good thing I can see is that, possibly for the first time in my life, I have felt safe and able to reach out to my loved ones for support; or course, they have always provided it, but historically one of the worst habits my mental health had caused me to develop was the need to pretend I was coping, and shut my loved ones out. I hated the idea of hurting them with my pain... I still do, but I also know that I hurt them more when I go all love wolf and shut them out.

So to the people making this dark time not just bearable, but beautiful, thank you, with all my heart. I love you. The words are too small, but they’re all I have.

Right now, I keep feeling like I’m in a long dark tunnel, and it’s feeling very difficult to see a light at the end. Blue, very wisely, said I need to think of this period right now as an end to a means. It is just one step, not the whole staircase.

It’s very easy to fall back into negative habits of self doubt and self hatred, but I am trying very hard to remember that a) this is not my fault, and b) I am trying my best. The outpouring of love and support following my documentary, The Incurable Optimist, has encouraged and supported my hard earned self worth.

So, that’s where I’m at.

can you give us any background on rose barnes (the first)? your family tree shows that she died at one year, but i cant recall and info on her in tnw, how did her death impact winnie and george? does bucky remember her?

This is a great question. It’s the second entry in Winifred Barnes’s encyclopedia of tragedy, after her husband coming home from war a changed man.

The thing about infant mortality is that just because it was more common then didn’t stop it from being devastating. Rose was born on March 3, 1920, when Bucky was nearly 3, and she died on April 3, 1921, a month after her 1st birthday, when Bucky was 4. She died of influenza.

In same ways, Rose’s death marked a turning point in George and Winifred’s relationship, because the way things were going after his return from WWI was unsustainable. He struggled with alcoholism, depression, and post-traumatic stress, and while he did manage to hold down a job and provide – there were plenty of jobs for a physically able-bodied man in the 20s, and his older brother Sean (b. 1885) was a partner in a small electrical contracting firm – their relationship was fractious and difficult from 1919-1921. 

Before the war, he’d been as playful and fun as Jack and as sensitive as Bucky, though not nearly as adept at self-expression thanks to his truncated education. He was born in 1893 in County Cork and immigrated to the U.S. in 1901 with his older brother. He knew how to read and do arithmetic, but his lack of education was a point of insecurity his entire life–and particularly in contrast to Winnie, who had been the salutatorian of her high school class, and who might have found a way to go on to college had she not married George instead. 

So, the short answer to your question is that in the early post-war years, George and Winnie weren’t happy. He drank too much, he could be mean (he may not have been educated, but he could certainly wield words), and while he was never physically abusive, the fun and sweetness of their early romance seemed to have died the minute he’d shipped out to the Argonne. Winnie often had to care for him through hangovers, flashbacks, and nightmares, and make excuses for him when he failed to attend church – the church to which she had converted, for him – and for his rudeness to their friends and family. It was during this time that her parents, Veenie and Serviu, began encouraging her to move back home with them. This was especially true after Prohibition was passed, and George continued to find ways to get drunk – they were terrified he’d get into trouble with the law because of his problem, and leave Winifred on her own with two small children to care for.

But then Rose died.

And Winnie was devastated, of course, but George was crushed. He blamed himself, thinking perhaps if he had been a better man, a better husband, Winnie wouldn’t have gotten ill in the first place from all her running around, and the baby wouldn’t have gotten ill from her. He regretted that he could hardly remember the details of Rose’s first, and as it turns out only, year of life. He didn’t know how to comfort Bucky – who had earned that nickname only a few months before, when pretending to be a chicken for “Yosie’s” amusement – and he didn’t truly know how to comfort his wife, either. But he tried. And for a while, he did better, and he asked his brother Sean to help him stop drinking, and he became more involved – if somewhat unconventionally – in caring for Bucky as a young child. 

He wasn’t perfect. He would still binge drink – alcohol was easy to get your hands on in New York in the 1920s –  but his days of day-in, day-out drinking and sleeping it off were over. And Winnie saw that, too, and in losing Rose found it easier to redirect her energy to her husband than to reflect on the loss of her daughter. They became closer in their grief, the opposite of what often happens to parents who lose a child, and found during this time a form of partnership that worked for them.

Specifically, Winnie was the true head of the household. She managed the money, their calendar, the children. She gave George task lists – he tended to have a poor short-term memory, related to a knock on the head he’d gotten during the war, and no doubt his continuing, if intermittent alcohol abuse – and they decided together that he would go to mass just about every day, because it helped him to have routines like that. Still, they struggled, and Winifred worked very hard to suppress her natural feelings of resentment because he wasn’t the man she married – and then to suppress her guilt for feeling that way, knowing what he’d gone through. 

It got easier when Teddy was born, in 1923, and easier again with Jack (1925), and by the time they faced their next major struggle – the Great Depression – their relationship had found its solid ground. They were deeply committed to one another, and while I hate to say that the death of a child could have a “silver lining” – that feels grotesque – losing Rose absolutely kept them together, whereas if she had lived, I don’t know that their marriage (or George) would have survived.

If we fast-forward, though, it makes the fact that he regressed in 1945 all the more sad. George was inconsolable after losing Jack and Bucky. And though Winnie had two grandchildren to care for – Andrew and Veenie, Jack’s twins born a few months after he was KIA – George was not nearly so involved with them. He died in 1948 in a bar altercation in Manhattan.

I said in an email to @em-is-obsessed​ that "there is something extremely tragic about losing the one person who is your partner in grief.” Only George, as her fellow parent to Bucky and Jack, the one person who loved them as completely as she, could understand and share in her sadness. And with him gone, there was Ted and Rebecca, but that’s not the same. It made popular culture’s obsession with her son sometimes harder to bear, because as the years went on, Bucky became an artifact of history; yet to her, he was still her child.

The last day in office, ding dong the witch is dead.

According to the New York Times, last week The House adopted a single article of impeachment, voting 232 to 197 to charge Trump with “inciting violence against the government of the United States” and requesting his immediate removal from office and disqualification from ever holding one again.

Republicans, who stood unanimously behind Mr. Trump in 2019 during his first impeachment, were split over the charge this time with many now speaking out against him and what he did to incite the storming of the Capitol.

The House’s vote was historic. Only two other presidents have been impeached; none has been impeached twice, by such a large bipartisan margin, or so close to leaving office.

So let's look over the last horrible four years before we bid farewell to the all time worst President of our country.

I won't get into all he has done in the past, like how many people he screwed over, how many bankruptcies he had, how he has no respect for women, stating how he grabs them by their pussys. His making fun of people with disabilities or the lack of compassion for the black community, we already knew about all of that and you still thought it was okay and voted him in.

But what has he done while in office, here's a list:

1.He withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement, stating there are no climate problems.

2.His Attacks on the Affordable Care Act

3. He tried to undo anything Obama touched, from Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals to the Clean Power Plan, but his all time go-getter was to end Obamacare, something he couldn’t do legislatively, so he turned to the courts. With no replacement plan in place other than the “great plan” that for four years he never came up with.

4. His…and there’s no other way to say it…Racism

From 1989 when he took out ads in newspapers,calling for five black and Latino teenagers to be put to death for a crime they’ve since been exonerated for.

He kept it going on until today.

“I have a great relationship with the blacks. I’ve always had a great relationship with the blacks,” Trump told Albany’s Talk 1300 in April 2011 as he mulled a run for the presidency.

 ‘I am the least racist person there is’

'I've done more for blacks than Lincoln"

Or how about his Proud Boys statement that sparked more hate.Trump said it's members should "Stand back and standby."

And then his all time Make Racism Great Again comment after a rally organized by a white nationalist in Charlottesville in 2017, saying there were “very fine people on both sides.”

5. The pandemic 

He’s made fun of people for wearing masks, undercut his own scientists, concealed information that the virus was airborne, off-handedly wondered if injecting disinfectant might treat the virus, and then left it to the States to figure out 50 separate plans to combat the virus, often undercutting their efforts with statements like “liberate Michigan!” 

The death toll from the virus has surpassed 225,000, and the president’s response during all of this was to pretend it was over, downplaying the virus and hosting his own super-spreader events, often flaunting local regulations to do it.

6. His Hugely Regressive Changes to the Tax Code

The Tax Cut and Jobs Act was a hugely regressive change to a tax code that already had set its highest bracket at half of what it was in the 1950s. The biggest winners were those making more than $500,000/year, while adding a “pass-through loophole” that allows business owners to take huge deductions and cut corporate taxes by a third, while doing almost nothing for most Americans. 

7. His policies against foreigners 

Starting with his removal of protective status from 59,000 Haitians and forced deportation during a pandemic? His legal attacks on DACA that threatened Dreamers with deportation to countries. The round-ups of undocumented workers at farm processing plants? Or ICE deporting U.S. veterans, we can't decide which is worst.

8.His Lies

They’re almost impossible to keep track of, but The Washington Post has put in the work, detailing 22,247 false or misleading claims through Aug 2020. And here's what they had to say about it.

Although many politicians say things that are wrong,Trump’s relationship to reality is out of this world. From the moment he took office and falsely claimed that his inauguration crowd was the largest in history, he has been America’s Liar-in-Chief, claiming that he’s done more for African-Americans than any other president since Abraham Lincoln (um, Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act), making up “facts” about election fraud to cast doubt on the 2020 election, and putting words in his opponent’s mouths—like that Joe Biden wants to defund the police or that he called young Black males “superpredators” (that, for the record, was Hillary Clinton). This is a man who used to call up papers pretending to be his own publicist, exaggerating his own wealth and claiming that Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. His lies don’t even raise an eyebrow anymore, we’ve become so used to it.

And that my friends is why we are so happy that in less than 24 hours this "man" will be gone.

We have had enough of the lies, of his narrostic, crazy, selfish behavior. We are sick of being the laughing stock of the world and we want to heal from all the brokenness he has caused in our country.

We can only hope that the next four years will have more peace, more diversity and more compassion for all human beings.

We need to be the change we want to see.

Chapter Twenty-Nine : THE HISTORY OF PRIDE

As we celebrate all Queer individuals with the “Marche des Fiertés” (yeurk, I hate that name) today in Paris, I want to take a look back at the History of Pride, its worldwide impact and finally, FINALLY retire the adage “The First Pride was a RIOT”. No, it wasn’t. Quit it.

This article is a direct follow-up to the events of the Previous article about the Stonewall Riots. If you haven’t read it, now is the time. I’m waiting. Still waiting. Take your time, it’s quite long. … We good ? Kay Kay.

FIRST PRIDE(S)

Actually, the first pride were multiple Prides, in two consecutive days and Four different American cities. The first in line was the Chicago Gay Liberation on Saturday June 27, 1970. A year after the Stonewall Riots almost to the day. For those who know their Chicago streets, it was organized as a march starting from Washington Square Park to the Water Tower at the intersection of Michigan and Chicago avenues — I don’t know Chicago. Interestingly enough, the participants did not follow the originally planned route and spontaneously marched on to the Civic Center Plaza. The next day, first anniversary of the Riots, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New-York marched (well, San Francisco organized a “Gay-In”).

In L.A., a Parade was put together down Hollywood Boulevard. To counter the hate still targeting the Queer community, Queer activists in charge of this Pride named their organization “Christopher Street West”, as a way to not put too much attention on themselves while asking for permits. A chief of Police from L.A. once told one of the organizers “As fair as I’m concerned, granting a permit to a group of homosexuals to parade down Hollywood Boulevard would be the same as giving a permit to a group of thieves and robbers”. Battles ensued, fees were so high it became outrageous and a last minute court decision ordered the Police to do their jobs and go protect people’s “constitutional guarantee of freedom of expression”. In other words, suck it. Despite death threats, over a thousand people participated to the L.A. Parade.

But the first official Pride was held that same day in New York City. If you recall, we left Craig Rodwell with a desire to keep the momentum going and do something big for the Community. It came in the form of a Parade. On November 2, 1969, Rodwell and and three close friends proposed to held the first parade in NYC at a Philadelphia meeting of the Eastern Regional Conference of Homophile Organizations (ERCHO). Except for the Mattachine Society (which abstained), the vote was unanimous and prompted the organizations to held others (previously mentioned) marches all across the country. On Rodwell’s corner was the newly-formed Gay Liberation Front (GLF). It took close to six months to organize the first Pride. Finances through donations (from either the Homophile groups or the citizens) were difficult to come by. Originally intended for a Saturday, it was postponed to Sunday as to give more opportunities for people to show up. Luckily for the march, Mattachine changed leadership in April 1970, giving the organized event less opposition.

The permit for the march was delivered only two hours before the beginning of the event.

The march covered the 51 blocks to Central Park. It took less than half the time due excitement and was a mix of respect and fun. People were also in a hurry to walk because of their fear of rejections due to them holding signs and gay banners. Fortunately, the participants encountered little resistance from onlookers. The New York Times coverage said “There was little open animosity, and some bystanders applauded when a tall, pretty girl carrying a sign “I am a Lesbian” walked by”.

AND THE YEAR AFTER THAT, AND THE YEAR AFTER THAT, AND THE ONE AFTER THAT.

In 1971, marches were organized in Boston, Dallas, Milwaukee, London, Paris, West Berlin and Stockholm, while still being organized in New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. The following year, Atlanta, Brighton, Buffalo, Detroit, Washington D.C., Miami, Philadelphia and San Francisco (not a “Gay-In” anymore) joined in. They adopted different names over the years, from “Gay Liberation Marches” to “Gay Freedom Marches”.

As of Today, marches are organized (in one form or another) in Africa, South Africa, Uganda, China, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Nepal, the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, in Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Guyana, Barbados, The Trinidad and all over Europe.

While the 70s’ Prides were mostly about activism and had a rooted ideology to critique the space producing heteronormative norms by bringing homosexual behavior into it, the 80s gave us a cultural shift in the gay movement. Activists of a less radical nature began talking over the march committees all over the cities, replacing the “Liberation” and “Freedom” with “Pride” (while still keeping the “Gay” part, although it wasn’t ALL ABOUT THE GAYS).

With the arrival of the word “Pride” onto the scene came bigger notions of celebration. Large parades involve now floats, dancers, drag queens and amplified music. It attracts larger and larger crowds and is being taking over by governments and corporate sponsors and being used as major tourist attractions for hosting cities. Which is disgusting but more on that later.

With the HIV/AIDS epidemics of the 80s, many of the pioneers of the Stonewall Riots and the first Pride were no longer there to keep the memories of those events alive. Things that were supposed to endure, disappeared and the sense of “annual relief” from the participants became more present year after year. The one good thing that (recently) came with time is the name change. The language became more accurate and inclusive, as GAY is not EVERYTHING. It became Lesbian and Gay, then LGBT, and now the event is simply known (to the organizers) as “Pride” (I would argue for Queer Pride but that’s just my preference).

Today, Pride is not just ONE DAY. It’s an entire month, chosen to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. We can thank Bisexual activist Brenda Howard aka “The Mother of Pride” for that. She was the organizer of the first Pride in NYC, then she originated the idea for a week-long series of events around Pride Day which became a worldwide June celebration of our identities. Activist Tom Limoncelli later stated “The next time someone asks you why LGBT Pride marches exist or why LGBT Pride Month is June tell them “a Bisexual woman named Brenda Howard thought it should be””.

99 PROBLEMS (BUT A DANCE PARTY AIN’T ONE ?)

I often compare Pride with Almodovar’s movies. I liked it better when it was a ugly and messy than now, full of colors and boring as shit. For that’s not entirely fair. Political and social events in the country determines the level of political and social consciousness present in each Pride. In France, we pretend like everything’s okay. So the Pride becomes more of a dance party than a political event. Uh. So be it.

France’s first “Pride” was held in 1971. Well, actually no. Queer participants took the opportunity of the May 1st celebration to march alongside the usual syndicates and unions. That year, FHAR was created, replaced in 1974 by GLH. We can talk about a shy start for the Queer community in France since they took part of the march until 1978. But on June 25th 1977, the first independent Pride started from Place de la République to la Place des Fêtes, thanks mostly to the help of the MLF (Mouvement de Libération des Femmes). The next two years would see the same number of attendees (around a thousand) and would concentrate of the anti-homosexual discriminations laws still effective in the country. On the election year of 1981, 10,000 people showed up, prompting François Mitterand to declare soon after his win that those laws would disappear (and they did).

Shit got stinky started in 1986 when the CHLOEG (Comité Homosexuel et lesbien pour l’Organisation des Etats Généraux de l’Homosexualité)passed the baton on the organization of the pride, leaving space for exterior forces (business men) to take over. But I would also point out that the AIDS crisis was also an important fact in the transformation of the Pride, allowing difficult day-to-day lives to let go of their problems just for one day.

People lost interest and by 1991, only 1.500 marchers took to the streets. The “Gay Pride” Collective was created. They went to the press and to the AIDS associations and asked for unison against the disease so that by 1993, as many people were together as in 1981. The year after that, Prides were getting organized all around the country. The collective successfully found equilibrium between the politically active queers fighting for survival and the younger generation who wanted to have some fun.

In 1997, France hosted the Europride, leading to 300.000 people walking alongside one another. That’s good. And for the first time ever, businesses sponsored the event (SNCF, RATP, Virgin Cola, Kronenbourg, Yves Saint Laurent…). No so good. As of today, the collective Inter-LGBT is responsible for the annual event that usually ends up with around 800.000 participants.

I didn’t go to Pride this year, or the years prior due to me being employed all day on Saturdays. But I’m pretty sure that the Political is up front and the Fun part (most of the rest) is behind. Or something like that. That’s fine. No everybody needs to be politically-active but there’s not enough people to truly care about the urgency of some situations. For example, this year was probably all about the PMA. Great ! It’s urgent. But are we not concerned about the Trans community ? What about the Bi-Invisibility syndrome ? The Intersex right to not get butchered ? Last time I was there, I got stuck behind a very loud Electro Dance Party that was not fighting for anything but the right to be seen. It was by Gay Men for Gay Men. enough, Gay Men ! We see you. How can we not ? You’re loud and you are Men (and mostly White).

I’m personally very sick of Pride. I wish I could be more into it but it disappointed me year after year. Last year, I heard of a thing called “Pride de Nuit”. I can’t remember if it was the night before and the night after Pride but it was sold as a event entirely political, with the little march then a get together in which multiple politically motivated speeches would be heard. I was so in. I stayed 20 minutes. Why ? I was marching with two other gay people and the crowd started yelling in unison “Straight People suck ! Straight People suck !”. Are we Heterophobic now ? We got out and went drinking by the Seine.

Every time I see people just having fun with music and drugs (so much drugs) at Pride, I can’t help but remember the 1973 speech that Sylvia Rivera made at New York City. Find it, it’s on Youtube and it’s heartbreaking.

The people are trying to do something for all of us, and not men and women that belong to a white middle class white club. And that’s what you all belong to!

For context, Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson were banned from the Pride and the speech list of that year for making other gay activists “look bad”. It was a time where the organizers didn’t want to be represented by Transgender folks and People of Color, and to satisfy a larger number of white gay middle-class folks attending the event and tired of politically-motivated speeches.

I believe that in 2019, we are living exactly the same situation. Today I got pulled over for the first time for running a red light , when the officer pulled me over, as he was getting off his bike I took my seatbelt off (I know, now that I think of it, it was such a stupid thing to do, but it was my first time being pulled over and I didnt know how to react). He di.dn't say anything about the seatbelt, but he told me that I ran the red light back there. Ok, let me explain this to you guys now, i don't know if you're familiar with Cape Cod or not but there are TONS, literally tons of tourists here right now, and the roads are really narrow.. There was a guy in an Audi pulling into a parking spot in reverse in front of me and he was taking half of the lane that I was on.. This parking spot happens to be 10 ft away from the set of lights. In my mind I was thinking, I'm gonna go to the left side to let this guy go in, and while that was happening I was worried about the tourists that like to jaywalk and cross the road inbetween cars... So I go to the left and the left and gas it a little bit, I was going like 10 mph as I was taking off, and the light turns yellow, I cross the crosswalk, then the light turns red and I drive under the set of lights.. These 2 bike cops came immediately after me... So long story short, it was my first time being pulled over, I took the seatbelts off, and I ran the red light because there was a guy pulling into a parking stop right in front of me and I was too worried looking around afraid I was going to hit a jaywalking tourists. I know people always think they're right, but I honestly think I didn't do anything wrong here. I got a $25 seat belt fine and a warning for running the red light, which is complete BS. I know it's a warning but I don't want it on my record at all, how can I appeal, any tips? Im only 18 years old, just got off my JOL and I'm very conscientious of other people, never speed or anything. I appreciate your help, will give best answer, thanks!""
