As you can imagine, the (Calathea) Makoyana is also known as the ‘peacock plant’ thanks to the fact that its leaves also resemble those of the tails of male peacocks. Scientifically, the plant was reclassified as Goeppertia makoyana (many Calatheas have recently been reclassed as Goeppertias but the names remain interchangeable when discussing the plants). The Cathedral Windows plant is widely regarded to be a type of Prayer Plant because its leaves are PHOTOPHILIC. This means that they open and close depending on the amount of light available. In the daytime, the leaves will spread wide open whereas at night they will close up. I picked up a couple new additions to the collection today in Neosho, Missouri at Fausett Greenhouses Inc. The first one is 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘶𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘷𝘢𝘳. 𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘢. This subspecies is a member of the popular houseplant family Marantaceae, commonly known as Prayer Plants. They have earned this nickname because the leaves fold upwards into "praying" position at night. It is a tropical plant native to the humid rainforests of Brazil. The second plant is a relative of the common African Violet. It is a cultivar known as 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘱𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘱. "𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭". It features fuzzy leaves and blueish-purple flowers.
