PORONIEC Release Debut Album "W Połogu", MGŁA's The Fall on Drums
Poroniec was born in 2016, during a rehearsal of another band, from our shared need to free ourselves from the burden of society’s expectations. One night of drinking led to many nights of sending each other listening materials and later on, recording first versions of the songs in Ferment’s home studio. Poroniec in Slavic Demonology is mighty Demon raised from the soul of child who died before…

Hi there I don’t have any experience with the Witcher. Never played the games or read the books. I’ve watched the trailer for the Netflix series. I was wondering what you meant by the issues you have with no Slavic representation in the aesthetic and other things like that? Also I’m from the US so I’m incredibly uninformed on this topic and would enjoy being enlightened. I promise I’m not being sarcastic and if I’m coming off as rude I’m sorry
(Disclaimer - I am not an expert nor do I claim to be, I'm speaking from my own heart and the knowledge I have)
To get into the issue, you've got to understand that for most people that've read The Witcher, it's a very important book. I grew up on foreign fantasy and adventure novels and when my mom handed me a book that was Polish -it was weird. I didn't know Polish fantasy novels even existed - I was fed grim, westernized fantasy beforehand. The Witcher immediately stood out to me- it was complex, intelligent, with a lot of morals and likeable, but problematic characters. It had strong girl protagonists (including Ciri, who's canonically lesbian/bisexual), intriguing action, and it was perfect. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same about it. It's a unique piece of Polish culture, rooted deeply.
The Witcher is riddled with references to Polish history and culture, especially Slavic mythology. Monsters such as Strzyga, poroniec, wąpierz (or even the Wild Hunt, [even though it does appear also in German mythology]) hail from Slavic mythology. Superstitions (such as children being born under a bad moon) are driven from Slavic beliefs. The dryads that take Ciri in while she's exiled are creatures from Slavic mythology. It doesn't matter that Witcher takes place in a fictional world. It's a fictional world build upon slavic motifs.
Now imagine that amazing book, and the incredible game (made by polish artists) taken by a big corporation such as Netflix. They cast non-Slavic actors as the main characters, they leave out everything that makes it unique and beautiful, and turn it into a stereotypical fantasy setting- English castles, French costumes, American actors. There's nothing distinct about it now - it's not a beautiful, captivating story anymore. It's just a mainstream tale about a guy with a sword. And it's fed to a target audience - mostly people who have no knowledge of the books at all, who don't know what this book means to us.
I don't know how people can not be mad about it. If any of my information is false, be free to correct me, but I'd much rather enjoy something made properly than another mediocare Netflix show that leans heavily on special effects for any semblance of quality at all.
Slavic people don't get represented in the media- and I've talked about it before, but to take any sliver of the brand that we had - something distinct, something ours, and exclude us from it? I was very excited for the show, at first, because I didn't know how badly executed it's going to be. This is an utter disappointment, and I'm going to express my dissatisfaction.
Sorry for the long post, but I hope I've helped you understand the problem a little more.

Creature Feature: Botchling
*pinches the bridge of nose* Hoo boy.
Hello everybody. Today we’re going to have a conversation about botchlings, and I’m going to try not to have a screaming fit over how Witcher 3 handled a canonical domestic abuser.
Warnings in the tags; be absolutely certain you read them before you check below the cut.
Saying a botchling's ugly is like saying shit's not particularly tasty: can't say it's a lie, but it doesn't exactly convey the whole truth, either.
– Lambert, Witcher of the Wolf School
Botchlings are perhaps the most repulsive creatures a witcher will ever have the displeasure of meeting. Born of dead, unwanted babies discarded without a proper burial, their appearance is that of a partially-decayed fetus, their unformed flesh twisted with hate, fear and malice. These hideous creatures feed on the blood of pregnant women, driven by a mad hunger that most often leads to their victim's death.
A botchling will emerge from its lair at night to lurk by the bedside of an expectant mother, draining her strength and that of her unborn progeny as she sleeps. A woman thus beleaguered first suffers from troubling dreams, then fever, delirium and a general weakening of the flesh. After a few such nights she is enfeebled and unable to defend herself - it is then the botchling attacks directly, sinking its long, sharp fangs into her body and drinking her blood until mother and fetus perish together.
A botchling stands around a foot and a half in height, but, when threatened and if gorged with blood, it can change form. At such times it grows into a deformed man, hunched over and striding, ape-like, on its forearms. Stronger and fiercer after this alteration, it hurls itself into direct, physical combat, gnashing at its opponent or attacking him with sharp claws.
A botchling's curse can be lifted by transforming it into a lubberkin - a guardian spirit of the hearth that watches over the family it never knew in the house it never could call home.
Witcher 3 Bestiary Entry
I am not going to get into it here, because this is really not the place or time for a long talk about how Witcher 3 handled a canonical domestic abuser, so details are going to be light and not focused on specific events in canon. I’m not currently planning to go into why exactly what happens is gross and why it sucks, just— please accept that’s why this is light on exact quest details.
Right. So, botchlings don’t have to actually be stillborn; the one we see in game was actually a miscarriage, and given that they need to be unwanted (perhaps specifically unwanted by the pregnant parent, given another bit of info), it may be possible to create a botchling by abortion (which, incidentally, would be an extra level of disgusting by implication.)
“proper burial” does refer to not just burying the fetus, but burying it with a name, possibly in a churchyard, etc.
Botchlings can be made to retract their spines/calm down in general with the use of Axii.
It is possible to remove a curse from a botchling and turn it into a protetive household spirit, called here a lubberkin, by bringing the botchling to the home of the family, formally giving the unborn child a name with an Elven naming ritual (which will cause the botchling to properly die), and burying it under the threshold. Assuming all goes well, it will arise as a lubberkin the next night.
It’s a little more difficult to get a botchling anywhere, because they tend to attract wraiths, which tends to work the botchling up, which means they need to be calmed down or they’ll start attacking people.
Botchlings are based on the Slavic poroniec.

#drawfantasy #challenge #day11 #undead So here's an undead creature from the #slavicmythology - the #botchling - a child miscarriaged or aborted that at nights attacks pregnant women or midwives. PORONIEC - polish folklore
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Poroniec is a miscarriage as a result of childbirth complications brought on by the parents ( easily preventable mishaps) - ie carelessly hurting the baby in the womb, drinking during pregnancy, sex during pregnancy)
the creature will attack and drink the blood of mothers - first attacking its own parents - as revenge for the loss of potential life
but can be appeased through a ritualistic burial of  the fetus under the families threshold - will then become a Klobuk - a spirit that watches over the home
