No fear of the dark
The Line of Best Fit
October 23, 2023. Words by Kelsey Barnes
On Zig, American singer/songwriter Poppy is taking a sharp turn to shapeshift into something new. She reflects with Kelsey Barnes on the growth that inspired the dark pop-infused album.
Soft-spoken yet commandeering, sensitive yet formidable, people checked in for the peculiarity of it all but stayed for Poppy — a girl who, layer by layer, album by album, was showing them it’s okay to be different.
"The audience for me is the show,” she says. “They might be watching me, but they are the show for me. I love to see every response that they give you. There's crowd surfing, there is marching, dancing, screaming — they're so colorful. I don't know if it’s because I'm living in my own realm here, but I don't know if there are audiences that are as colourful as mine. [...]
"I hope Zig is something they can return to and feel like they can take over the world. I only want to manifest peace and power to create anything that they dream up that will add to the world."
Zig is released on October 27, 2023

Opium poppy seedpods (papaver somniferum).
It’s seed saving time! Once the pods are brown and the seeds are black, they’re ready to harvest. You can eat the seeds. They’re not psychoactive and make lovely baked goods, or you can scatter the seeds in autumn or late winter to grow in the spring. Poppy seeds need to experience winter to germinate. Direct sow on the ground where you want them to grow because they don’t transplant well. Opium poppies are annuals and need to be started from seed each year anew.
