I finally organized my Phryne Fisher books by “tv tie-in” and “art” covers. The only book I’m still missing in either format is Blood and Circuses. I’m getting closer to having a full set of both editions. I just wish my art cover ones were all the same size.

Mystery Review: Another Great Classic!
Last Seen Wearing — Hillary Waugh Originally published in 1952, Last Seen Wearing is one of the first police procedurals that gave readers a realistic portrayal of both the police people and the methods they employ to clear cases. Which, in this instance, is the disappearance of college freshman Lowell Mitchell.  Waugh, a pioneer of the police procedural subgenera, follows the case from start…

REVIEW
Hard Country by Reavis Z. Wortham
Tucker Snow #1
Small town life should be calm, serene, and easy…right? Not so much for Tucker and his daughter Chloe when they moved to Ganther Bluff and found themselves across the road from drug dealers that didn’t play nice. Great introduction to a new series!
What I liked: * Tucker: widow, father to a teenage daughter, grieving, lost his wife and younger daughter to meth addled driver, trying to health while keeping his daughter safe
* Chloe: sixteen, not happy to have moved to the country, misses her mother and sister, grieving, goodhearted, kind, caring, strong – has a good future
* Harley: Tucker’s younger brother and partner for years undercover, married, has to young sons, a bit higher strung than Tucker, loves his family and brother, in synch with Tucker when working
* Tammy: Harley’s wife and aunt to Chloe, there for her family, strong and resilient
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* The way Tucker and Harley worked together
* That I knew who the bad guys were and was rooting for them to be dealt with
* The way family and community played a part – both good and bad families
* That there is another book to look forward to
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that there are evil people like the ones in this book and that they harm so many by doing what they do
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
BLURB
There is no peace in the hard country Tucker Snow is as tough as they come, hardened by decades working as an undercover narcotics agent for the Texas Department of Public Safety. Through special dispensation from the governor, he and his brother Harley cut a wide swath through the criminal element of Northeast Texas. But tragedy comes calling after taking a dream job as a special ranger with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, when Tucker's wife and toddler are killed in a horrific traffic accident caused by a drug-addled felon. Close to breaking, Tucker sets his badge aside to move his surviving teenage daughter outside of Ganther Bluff, a quiet town with enough room for them to mourn their unexpected loss. But peace doesn't last long for a man like Tucker Snow. Instead of settling into small-town life to heal from such an unimaginable loss, a fresh kind of hell hits them with full force. Crimes and secrets strangle this rural community, and when a new form of meth with the street name of gravel gets too close to home, it's enough for Tucker to put his badge back on and call Harley for help. The town will ultimately be better off with him as a resident lawman, but this unforgiving landscape will threaten everything Tucker holds dear.

Review: Where the Dead Sleep by Joshua Moehling
Title: Where the Dead Sleep Series: Ben Packard: Book Two Author: Joshua Moehling Publisher: Poisoned Pen Press Length: 316 Pages Category: Murder Mystery Rating: 5 Stars At a Glance: Deputy Ben Packard doesn’t rely on flash and bang to carry a story. He’s far removed from the snarky, posturing, tough guy cop stereotype. He’s simply the investigator Sandy Lake needs, because he’s the investigator…

Dead of Winter
Not a lot to say about this one that isn’t in the review itself, a few worries that this might be a little close to spoilery, but I think I should be good. I enjoyed this one quite a bit. This one is courtesy of netGalley and the folks at Poisoned Pen Press. Here’s Darcy Coates’ Dead of Winter. Enjoy! Christa wants to lay her past to rest. Wants to move past that terrible night and embrace life…

The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill #Mystery #Thriller #2022Books

The ornate reading room at the Boston Public Library is quiet—until a woman’s terrified scream shatters the tranquility. Security guards take charge immediately, instructing everyone inside to stay put until the threat is identified and contained. While they wait for the all-clear, four strangers sitting at the same table pass the time in conversation, and friendships are struck. Each has their…

Death on Windmill Way by Carrie Doyle
Death on Windmill Way by Carrie Doyle was a read courtesy of Poisoned Pen Press when the series giveaway failed to have a winner. The series landed on my bookshelves with the promise that I would pay it forward by donating the series to my library. It is the first in the Hamptons Murder Mystery Series and is a cozy mystery. I admit my expectations were less than stellar after reading her Trouble…

ARC Review: "The Woman in the Library," by Sulari Gentill
ARC Review: “The Woman in the Library,” by Sulari Gentill
Hello happy readers! I am again late on an ARC, but feel this may work in my favor. The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill is an atmospheric, meta novel that has just enough creeping dread to make it a great fall read, despite its June release date. Thank you, Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press, for this amazing opportunity! From the Publisher: In every person’s story, there is something to…

Spoiler Alert: It's Not About a Librarian
Review: The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill, aBook narr. Katherine Littrell (Poisoned Pen Press and Dreamscape Media, 9 June 2022)
Tumblr media
If you like your mystery with a healthy dose of meta-narrative, The Woman in the Library is the book for you. I adored this smart, well-plotted, suspenseful story that is equal parts murder mystery, cultural commentary, and book-within-a-book. If that sounds complicated -- it is. But Sulari Gentill keeps this complex machine humming with incredible finesse.
Three-sentence summary: Four strangers strike up an unexpected friendship after a chilling scream pierces the quiet of the Boston Public Library. When a female journalist is discovered dead there the next day, the quartet decides to investigate, only to discover their connection to the killer is stronger than they realize. Meanwhile, the author of all their destinies finds herself trapped in the crosshairs of an admirer who will go to any length to show his loyalty to her cause.
This was a perfectly paced thriller that had me totally enthralled from the get-go. I actually ended up listening to the audio for this title after the book's release, and Katherine Littrell's narration added another layer of storytelling excellence to the narrative. Compelling characters, a logical but hard-to-solve mystery, and lovely prose -- The Woman in the Library was everything I could have asked for in a summer read.
