making this its own post so as to not be like, makin the real big good post All About Me or w/e. but re: last reblog, about the homestuck renaissance and all that
im like. really proud to be a small speck of that lineage. i wasnt around for the shit, im not claimin i was. i was neither a creator nor anyone catching flack during that era. but with podfeels... i dunno.
if the homestuck renaissance was the flame, then podfeels is an ember of an ember. its small. tangential. arguably entirely unoriginal.
but i hope that with it, me and the rest of the podfeels crew can do that era’s memory some level of justice. maybe even land on some dry brush, help the fire spread a lil. get back some of its old fury.
i dunno. theres a lot of art that’s inspired me in my life, but nothing quite so constructively. and i hope that podfeels lets us pay it forward a little.

do you know of friendsim 2? its on steam, made by the same twitterbrained clique that runs sahcon. maybe itll get canonized like vast error too someday
among some things, the art style is very hit or miss, they made the entire purple caste black, had an entire route dedicated to poly relationship drama with the jades, karako and amisia are trans (why only the kids...). it reminded me so much of validate and y12000.
maybe its for the best if hiveswap is cancelled.
God Friendsim 2 is also just as bad. They even have the same polarizing sprite art for each character just like they did with Godfeels Podfeels fandub. At least their excuse is that they are indie. But still it just hurts to look at....
And yeah, have Hiveswap cancelled and announced that it was a Kickstarter scam. 2 million dollars wasted.
The only people who actually got something out of it, were the two people that paid 10k to have their fantrolls appear in the webcomic and the guy who won the Hiveswap comic contest to have his fantroll to appear in Act 2.

apologies if you’ve written this somewhere before, but in a couple of these #sarahposts you refer to a retcon you made in gf1, what was the change?
oh yeah! i don't think i've really extensively documented this anywhere, so i might as well do so here. let's start with the boring shit and cover the history, then i'll give you the full breakdown of what changed.
so when i wrote gf1, i had no sense that i would ever want to go beyond the realm of this one fic. but i DID have this idea of "the ultimate ultimate self," an entity that contains all selves which is never mentioned in homestuck. funny that THAT’S my first big canon divergence, rooted so deep in the philosophical. obviously the big existential kick of gf1 is this idea that retcon is somehow eroding john's connection to that ultimate ultimate self, or at least to his ultimate self generally. the extent to which this is TRUE remains to be seen, john/june is never an objective arbiter of their own subjective existence, but it is an important idea for the series nevertheless.
the other key ingredient is that for a long time i planned on doing my own audio drama adaptation of godfeels (as i mentioned at the end of this video). obviously i never got around to doing this myself and eventually abdicated responsibility to the far more capable hands of the podfeels team, but i did get as far as adapting godfeels 1 for a podfic (which is what they used for podfeels 1). so i took that opportunity to modify a few things to bring gf1 more in line with how the series’ cosmology had evolved.
RIGHT SO, what are the differences? well, they're almost if not entirely exclusive to the narration. and right from the start, we have a big addition:

when i wrote gf1 i put ZERO thought into how long after homestuck proper it took place. remember that i wrote and released this before the epilogues came out, so it was only later that i adopted the timeline and framework of the epilogues. if anything i wrote gf1 thinking they were closer to *my* age at the time, meaning like 27-28, which might have caused me problems down the line. but this addition is also important because (as i rant about in this recent post) i think it's easier to swallow questionably in-character dialogue when you know that this is six years and change after homestuck. i still don't think the overall timeline gets emphasized enough throughout... honestly ALL of godfeels before chapter 8 lmao. looking back i was shockingly negligent in this respect.

this was a pretty substantial addition owing to the fact that back then i really wasn't interested in writing anyone but the betas, and even then i mostly just wanted to write about june and jade. obviously that changed, so i wanted to do a better job of setting up dirk's murky relationship with june. ditto with june and terezi's murky romantic tensions.
this is The Big One. i’m not even sure i could tell you the precise significance of every change here, beyond the obvious one. would you believe that this was before i thought of X as a distinct character? but i still had the sense that the antagonism of the third person narration here was rooted perspectivally, and it’s my opinion that john at the pits of his worst depression is closest to X, the part of himself that judges his every action against the assumed perfection of all his friends. after june comes out and takes charge of her identity and Things Happen, i see X as reflexively turning their judgment outwards (though still with a core of self-resentment), which is how we eventually get the circus egotistica.

some simplification of text here plus some additions. is the narration here describing jade’s voice breaking through john’s dissociation, or is it something more cosmic? either could be true...
minor alterations here, plus a probably too-cute stinger banging the drum that This Is An Ongoing Series Now Actually
and as far as i can tell, that’s it! very minor changes for the most part, but it’s the little details that get you every time :)

Still not Actively Here, probably never will be again because fuck this site, but may as well post some sort of life update while we're here?
We're finally on HRT, been on it for about 8 months now. We're plural, turns out I share my head with a dragon. Still working at Kroger, inertia is a hell of a thing. We have an ebike now instead of just relying on Uber/Lyft for everything. We're the voice of Dave Strider in podfeels, an audio drama adaptation of Sarah Zedig's very good Homestuck Epilogues fic series godfeels, or: "i dreamed of feeling better". Uhh, what else? We're very gay for our partners.

Ty for the info, I actually tried reading the first chapter once but it just wasn’t my cup of tea and overlooking the series I could kinda tell it def wasn’t for me but this is good for anyone else who wants to get into it 👍

hi miss dare! i'm a big fan of your work in podfeels. i was wondering, what are your inspirations in regards to the audio medium? any audio dramas you've been enjoying lately?

honestly? im ashamed to admit it but im not the most well versed on my medium of choice.
i make audio dramas and WANT to listen to them but i just keep Not Getting Around To It. truth be told, i actually havent really learned how to do my medium all that well, either. haven't done any education, not even really youtube tutorials, at least not in the modern day.
actually, most of my love of sound design comes from too very insane places.

when i was a kid and watching a lot of Youtube Sketches i saw the video this is dev commentary for and watched this after. and hearing him talk about layering sounds to make the right effect, specifically the line about "you'll notice how this gunshot sounds contains no actual gunshot sounds", REALLY stuck with me. my lifelong habit of "oh hey same glass shatter sound as die hard, oh hey that door opening creak was used in morrowind" evolved into spotting the source sounds for things, which only got stronger when i was following the development of the sequel to Lugaru (masterpiece, play it), Overgrowth (dogshit, skip it)

these two videos, and me getting into horror movies at the same time, tuned me in to the depths of sound effects and how to spot their sources. not just The Same Stock Sounds, but breaking it down into their constituent parts. a gore sound was no longer a gore sound, now I was hearing the melon getting squished, I was hearing the squeeze ketchup bottle being squeezed and wheezing out air with the teensiest bit of liquid dribbling out, etc. its kind of similar to practical effects, you know? like how that one Dawn Of The Dead headshot kill is a paper mache replica of the actor filled with cherry chunks, dyed red apple pie filling, and condoms. my love of sound is really similar to the average horror buff's love of practical gore effects.

i just find sound really compelling. sorry to disappoint if you were looking for full sound audio drama production recommendations, because the truth is i have literally never listened to one.
OH. OH ACTUALLY THATS NOT TRUE.
its not an inspiration, its SUPER recent, but Filmcow recently put out an hour long audiodrama dark comedy horror called The Table. its really fucking good and you should listen to it.

frankly Filmcow has been putting out nothing but gold lately. Watch the entire Shadowstone Park series, the Charlie The Unicorn Finale, and Vulo Lives (episodes AND streams, streams are in a playlist unlisted on their channel) when you get the chance. even if you have already. rewatch them. rewatch them all.
funnily enough, filmcow i guess ALSO was a partial inspiration for my sound design love. their old work always had interesting sounds, though nothing i really got enraptured by at the time. but Filmcow has also been getting into audiodrama, as seen here, and also has released a huge couple of sound effect packs on itch.io for free, with the only usage right rule being they can't be used by pigs or fascists, which is. so cool. love jason steele. hero and icon.
i actually use a lot of these in my work!

I don't know which is worse. The fact June Egbert in this one is a fusion of John and Vriska. Or the art sprites for some of these characters is even more contrasting than Pesterquest's own.
I'd be fine if it was some meta joke about certain characters and their current standing determines if they could keep a consist art style or not, but no way people would think that deep for Meta Narrative. Also, another part of everyone hates Jade Harley.

so my gf just finished something she's put a lot of love and effort into (and it shows through in the final work)
first off, do you or have you ever liked homestuck? do or did you appreciate its character interaction, introspection, and capacity for genuine emotion? its worldbuilding? are you interested in media exploring facets of identity including gender and plurality? to partially copy and paste my gf: Sarah Zedig’s homestuck post-canon fanfiction, a story of self-discovery, betrayal, and resistance in the face of insurmountable odds, the traumatic trans space opera, Godfeels is an expansive (almost as many words by now as OG homestuck!) story exploring and expanding on all of this.
ANYWAYS my gf - along with sarah zedig's blessing and many others' participation and skills - put together Episode 1 of Podfeels, a radio drama adaptation of Godfeels. and it's real good. months in the making. great voice acting, music, and foley. check it out
