Hector Garrido (1928-2020), ''The Ecstasy Connection'' (The Baroness #1) by Paul Kenyon (aka Donald Moffitt), 1974 "A former Vogue and Elle cover model, the Baroness is a "long-legged beauty in her early thirties" who runs a model agency as a cover for her espionage missions. Her preferred weapon is the Bernadelli VB .25 caliber. She drinks martini cocktails, smokes the occasional joint, drives a red Porsche, throws lavish parties in her Rome mansion and enjoys fiery but casual sex with a series of handsome hunks, including suspected enemies she may well have to kill. Her jade green eyes, raven black hair and "explicit cheekbones" prove the perfect smokescreen. "There wasn't a line or shadow on her lovely face to show the deadly secrets that lay behind it." (Source) Quick fun fact: Hector Garrido did all the packaging art for the G. I. Joe toys in the 1980s, art I was well acquainted with as a wee lad who was really into ninjas and dug Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes (but not so much the military propaganda masquerading as a toy line they were associated with).

Seventeenth-Century Pocket Book
Tumblr media
Today, approximately 30 currencies are in use among the fifty nations of Europe. Back in the 1600s, things were much more complex, as illustrated in this Dutch catalog of woodcuts of 1,685 coins (many scaled to actual size). European cities, duchies, dioceses, and other localized governing bodies issued their own unique sets of coinage.

This book was printed in 1633 by Hieronymus Verdussen of the Verdussen publishing dynasty in Antwerp. At this point in history, the Netherlands dominated international trade. During the "Dutch Golden Age," the Netherlands was enriched by the establishment of the Dutch East Trading Company in 1602 and the Dutch West Trading Company in 1621. A pocket book such as the one showcased here would have seen heavy use by Dutch merchants needing a handy reference work to distinguish the hundreds of different coins in circulation.

And yes, this is indeed a “pocket” book! The unusual dimensions of this volume (31 x 10.5 cm) fit very well in the pockets of the early 17th century (abt. 40 x 30 cm). (Fun fact: the modern pocket as sewn into clothes was developed in 17th century Europe!)

I have been accused of not being a "proper" bookseller, as I am occasionally hesitant actually part with my books. Yesterday, a gentleman brought the book shown here -- Gods and Goddesses in Art and Legend, by Herman J. Wechsler -- to the front counter. I began leafing through it and noticed the words of Daedalus: "I warn you, Icarus, to fly only the middle course." This, I realized, is sensible advice. The middle way is best. This is the advice of the Buddha. It is the advice of Aristotle. I cannot keep all of my beloved books, but neither can I sell them all. I must pursue the middle course. I shall sell some but not all of the books.
Naturally, however, I could not sell this book. I am keeping it to remind me to follow the middle way.

Ohhh Ms Duane, I have a question for the author! 🙋
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am immeasurably curious about this interaction - it sounds like Bones is asking if Spock can feel Kirk's thoughts? Had the idea of them having a t'hy'la/mental bond been floating around already, or was there other inspiration you found for this little bit?
(Ps, I'm loving how bones and spock interact in Doctors Orders, it feels so organic!)

Black Fire, a Star Trek Novel
Black Fire, a Star Trek Novel (Pocket Books #8), by Sonni Cooper, copyright 1982 (1983 under the TIMESCAPE imprint)
1. I am certain I read this before as a kid. 2. It was a minimum of 35 years ago, maybe more. 3. I remember NOTHING.
So I am counting it as a new book.
Okay, the foreword, by none other than Theodore Sturgeon, about the author? Moved me to tears. I loved that man.
Opening with Scotty and a full on horror in progress is a bold move, Ms. Cooper. Putting so many senior officers in peril, and injuring our beloved Enterprise all in the first pages? WOW.
And Spock is SO Spock. Also, the need for blood donors? The crew having to share quarters? Knowing it was an act of sabotage? This book is very much off with a bang!
Literally.
We have a conspiracy, we have a court martial, we have PIRATES!, we have Spock with an ear ring, we have Spock among Romulans...
The pacing of this one is fast. As in the denouement is all in like the last five pages. Every chapter, every section in each chapter FLIES. The voices are impeccable. Well, I have issue with Scott's accent being written out, but that's a frequent complaint.
Well worth reading, very Star Trek Original Flavor shenanigans and adventures.
