Feels Like We Only Go Backwards - Chapter 16:

"Hina claps with awe at the eruption of flames from Zuko’ skin. It is yellow, yes, orange too, but there is purple in the fire, and green, and red, blue, white, pink and more, all dazzling and brilliant as they burst from Zuko’s palms.

“Cool!” she yells, but Sokka hears her as if from a distance, finds his heart catching somewhere between his throat and mouth at the sight of Zuko’s shy smile, the rainbow reflected in his eyes. The light flickers over both their faces, vibrant and ethereal.

Sokka turns on his heels slowly, awestruck at the colourful warmth surrounding them. Zuko’s taken care to keep the flames a safe distance away, but Sokka can still feel the gentle heat of the fire flowing around him. It sinks into his skin, pushes all the way through to some unknown, untouched part of him that resides deep within his chest, making it unfurl until its blossoms peek out like the first buds of spring. And when he comes to a stop right back where he started—staring at Zuko’s cupped hands, his upturned mouth, his hair shimmering a thousand different shades, the way he looks up at Sokka just then with his unscarred eye squinting at its corner, bright and effusive and striking— the blossoms spread wide in his chest, trailing up and down and throughout him, catching at his seams. Coming alive.

And he thinks, oh.

And he thinks, oh shit."

I literally had this song on repeat most of the time that I was drawing this and this particular lyric just hoofs u in the chest as you look at Zuko SOFT AS ANYTHING bending dragon fire so pls, feel free to play it while you peruse the art.

There’s been a lot of really amazing but oh my GOD PAINFUL art from the flwogb fandom recently so in these trying times may I offer this happier piece to remind you of the magic moment Sokka fell for Zuko for the second time in 5 years. I title it “Oh Shit”.

I'm such a sucker for a character realising they're in love with the italicised "oh shit" I go FERAL for that every single time and ms oldpotatoe fucking DELIVERED on that (even though she delivered an emotional sucker punch almost immediately after thank u ma’am). This moment just made my breath hitch as I read it and I was thinking “of course, of course they just make their way back to each other. of course they do”. It was such a gorgeous moment I had to put my phone down for a moment and BREATHE.

something that really inspires me to create from Ruby’s fic is the perfect clarity of the writing - I can SEE these gorgeous moments she writes as already made paintings in my head and I gotta DRAW. This one was clear as day, so I’ve spent so long trying to achieve what I saw in my head and I think I’ve come pretty close.

Not gonna lie I drew his expression and immediately got emotional about my OWN GODDAMN ART, (but I have been assured that this is completely normal).

Now I can’t post this without talking about the goddamn hair. I wrestled with his hair on this for MONTHS - I always thought that I'd struggle with hands, or even anatomy and proportions but NO. Hair seems to be my drawing nemesis and makes me wanna snap my tablet in half but nonetheless i have persevered (but for the love of all that is holy please zoom in I beg u I spent too long on the little details).

In terms of the shading and colour, the hair is very much An Experiment and I haven’t played with hair and light much before, but i was so intent on capturing the colours of the fire reflected in Zuko’s hair, i wanted it to be so ethereal. ethereal enough to just make Sokka fall headfirst down the stairs, two at a time, in love. So I gave it a go. It’s possibly too shiny and not quite how real hair would behave, and i’m probably gonna go away after posting and keep fiddling with it, but you know what I think it’s pretty, and im gonna challenge my perfectionist self to just... leave it be.

Ruby, I love u and I offer u this humble art as a small bribe to treat my boys well in the coming chapters (please, we don’t always have to go backwards do we?). <3 <3

Mein Gott, I’ve been working on this after my shifts for like a week XD

Then realized I forgot to draw the clothes… yeahhh

Still! I’m excited bc these lil paintings were fun to do and pretty new to me! Pls zoom in I spent too much time on them

So! Yara’s full first name is actually Yaroslava, which is a Slavic first name that means “fierce and glorious”, derived from the Sun god Yarilo. Yara itself is one of the many nicknames associated w the name, albeit an uncommon one. It is basically synonymous with ire or fury. I am infodumping about words.

Some details of symbols below the cut:

Colour: Green. Life, nature, reassurance, healing/growth, greed.

Flora: Sunflower. Loyalty, strength, honesty, peace. Each is actually thousands of teeny flowers.

Fauna: Manul. Elusive wild cats with a round shape and a glare that could kill. Learn to growl before they open their eyes, start hunting at 4 months. Aggressive, slow, and solitary. Prefer to stay out of sight. Growl when excited, can’t meow but do purr. A group of manuls is called a destruction. Let them be known

Object: a neat looking rock you found on the road. (The you and on the road are key to the experience). No known origin or worth, but it’s hard, cool, heavy, and comforting in your hand. Pictured is serpentinite which is a very cool rock. Well, a group of minerals. They make up the oceanic crust and tectonic plate boundaries.

Song: Zov Krovi by Melnitsa. Ok ok ok I have to translate this because please the parallels between the game and the lyrics are pretty neat. This song and album cover took me the most time hahaha. Translated from Russian:

1: What’s your favourite creation of yours? And why?

Impossible! You ask me to choose between my babies? Cruel of you, Jo! Cruel! I will pick one (1) of my favourites, but be aware there are others! These Din and Grogu icons were the first things I made in two years and I felt so excited making them, so inspired, still riding the high of discovering a show I loved so much. They took me twice as long to make as they should have because I was so out of practise. I think they came out very well.

5: A creation you enjoyed making a lot!

As you may or may not know, I do enjoy a good laugh. My unlikely magazine covers had me laughing from start to finish - I had a lot of fun coming up with little extra details to add that no one will probably notice but they’re there and worth zooming in for.

22: A creation that was difficult to make (but worthwhile!)

Answered here. In addition, because the struggle is real: my Maxwell Lord edit was a real challenge, not necessarily because of the techniques I was using, which were all very familiar, but because of the layout. I spent literal weeks trying to work out how to split up this quote in a way that made sense and which screencaps should be paired with which part of the quote, and should they even be screencaps, or gifs? I spent a good chunk of time screen recording scenes of the film because I was going to make a gifset instead, but I returned to my old friends the screencaps in the end. The colour palette, the fonts used, the aspect ratio - everything is completely different from what I originally had in mind. I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out, though!

“What are you doing?”

You look up. It takes a minute for the stars to clear from your vision. It also takes a minute for you to realise where you are, how long it’s been since you sat down.

It’s dark now, the first sign that you haven’t moved in hours, because it was light when you first walked in. The library is empty bar you and the red head now standing to your left, hands tucked in his pockets, bags under his eyes.

You blink up at him drearily. “What are you doing?”

“Are you drawing again?”

Fred sits down beside you, leaning across the table to get a better look at your sketchbook. The page is covered with rough sketches, faces of people from home, a single picture of Voldemort, because you like drawing him, even if you get in trouble for it. Even now, Fred inhales sharply at the sight of it, but he says nothing - Fred’s always been one of your biggest supporters, whether your drawings scare him or not.

“How long have you been in here?” he asks, trailing nimble, freckled fingers along the thick page.

You shrug, glancing over at the clock. It’s been nearly five hours, but you know you’ll receive The Look from the Weasley if you tell him that.

He hums. “Well, you should probably be getting to bed, mate. You look like someone’s punched you in both eyes.”

“You don’t look much better, Weasley.”

He grins, not taking his eyes off the sketchbook. “I suppose we could both do with a bit of extra sleep. Perks of being prisoners of education, huh?”

“You’re so dramatic.”

“You should draw me again.”

You flick a glance at him. He looks good in this light, like stars have been sprinkled down one side of his face. His hair is streaked with hazel, nearly hidden unless you know what you’re looking for. Days spent analysing him from across classrooms and crowded hallways have given you the perfect idea of where to look for tiny details such as this.

He looks over at you when you don’t reply immediately. He grins when he meets your eyes. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“You want me to draw you?”

He nods like it’s no big deal, like this is a request people get all the time, common courtesy almost. He has no idea that it makes your heart stutter, that you appreciate his interest so much more than he could ever understand.

“I can pose if it makes it easier,” he says when you once again fall into silence. “I’ll even get naked if you want.”

You roll your eyes. “I have loads of drawings of you, Fred. Just have a look at those.”

He pulls the sketchbook over and flicks back a few pages to where his portrait is kept. One of many. It’s a simple one, drawn in red pencil, the sketch lines still in place, and the eyes still a little wonky, but it was the first time you were ever brave enough to draw him, so you don’t get rid of it. He smiles down at it now, trailing a thumb along the graphite.

“Mum always tells me you know how to capture my smile,” he says without looking up.

“Really? She thinks so?”

“Mhm. She says you know how to capture the cheekiness.” Fred shrugs. “I think that’s her way of calling me a git.”

You giggle. “Yeah, well, mother knows best.”

“Oi!” Fred nudges your elbow before flicking forward a few pages to where the next drawing of him is kept. A full body one, drawn idly in History of Magic. He is stood with hands behind his back, Hogwarts robes on, the Snitch zooming around him for a bit of extra decoration. Again, drawn with your favourite red pencil. “This might be my favourite one, you know.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. You’ve drawn me looking really bloody tall. I like that.” He kisses your cheek. “I can live my fantasies through your sketches.”

You nudge him away, grinning. “You know, I never said I was drawing you.”

He frowns, furrowing his brows. “Are you drawing George?”

You shrug. “I could be drawing any of you Weasleys - all gingers look the same to me.”

“Are you telling me you find all of my brothers charming and handsome?”

“Ooh, only Charlie. He’s got them muscles-”

Fred kicks the leg of your chair. You burst into laughter, only to be silenced when he reaches over and kisses you. His fingers rest on your chin, holding your face in place until he pulls away and says, “I have an idea for what you should draw next.”

Breathless, you say, “What?”

“You and me standing together.” He pauses. “Add Charlie choking on a dragon bone in the background. Spice it up a little bit.”

4x05 Chapter Sixty-Two: Witness for the Prosecution

Be forewarned: Sweater discourse.

(I merely include this moment because Betty is technically in the frame.)

But contemporary Betty begins the episode in a pink-and-white knit top with short sleeves. She’ll end the ep in a pink-and-white knit with short sleeves, too, but standby.

Betty wore this knit top to help Jughead torch the trailer-turned-Fizzle-Rocks-lab. We get a better glimpse this time around (glad to know it survived all that soot and ash and car sex.)

Love the little two button-detail on the rear-sleeves.

Ten Little Boy Scouts.

Well! I guess you gotta dress the part.

Off the top of my head, I can’t recall another instance of Betty in this very true-blue shade. It’s more of an Archie color. But the FBI has a brand, so.

(It’s delicate. But potent.)

We get such extreme and vivid close-ups during Betty’s serial-killer-savant moment that I felt compelled to include them. Love the eyeshadow.

She pairs the Junior FBI polo with a dark skirt (possibly high-waisted shorts, but I’m leaning skirt.)

The Legend of the River Witch. (In red.)

(Bret wears black crew socks, he’s the worst.)

Purple and green! Betty’s all over the range in this episode, fittingly. The ribbing and the scalloping of the pink collar are all motifs we’ve seen before. It reminds me of the scalloped and ribbed top she wore in 219.

Purple pants though, that’s new!

This is the first we’ve seen the bag, but it is a cousin of sorts to the one that appeared during the Stonewall tour in 402.

The existence of a Dr. Patel in the Riverdale universe leads us to conclude, logically, that somewhere out there in the greater Maple State there exists a Raj Patel. (But when was Riverdale ever logical?)

Betty’s the only girl in this Junior FBI Program (so Kevin’s odds of finding a gay guy here are decent-ish?), but she seems to be the only one with a kid size polo.

Girl zooms right outta there in her white tennies.

I love old yearbooks. I cannot tell if he is épée or foil, fencing squad pls come thru (I actually think it might be inconclusive given so much of the diff is in the weight of the weapon, no?)

FPJ I could get it. LOOK at that James Dean curl. That Jones fam furrowed brow. The out-from-under gaze.

Betty’s subconscious! We haven’t really been here since 209? Lots of visual 209 connections in this episode... Betty spent 209 trying to hunt down and stop the Black Hood, and when she and Archie seemingly finally did...she felt like it wasn’t the end of the story (and she was right.)

Anyway—short overalls are a Betty classic at this point, and she’s paired them with a pink t-shirt and her pink low-tops.

I’m not going to engage with the fact that she’s wearing a bra/lette to bed (this is such a network TV thing)—but these two shirts are really similar. Their color difference might just be slightly too disparate to be down to a difference in color grading—but I do think we’ve all noticed a difference in the color and light in season 4 versus season 2. (Oh how I long for the clear tones of season 1, if only for the clarity of screen caps.)

I love this whole party scene, but doesn’t it feel like it might end up being significant beyond this episode?

Anyway, back to Betty the Serial Killer Whisperer.

It’s a good thing she didn’t burn them when Alice suggested it.

Little Betty! At one point, pink-and-red seemed to be connected to Betty’s relationship with Archie, but here I’m honestly not drawing those kind of conclusions. This scene has a different purpose.

Little Betty’s wardrobe is consistent between Teenage Betty’s dream and her retelling of the Caramel Incident to Kevin. Of course, it’s simply easier to have a single wardrobe for these things, but Riverdale’s made the decision to mix it up before (albeit on higher budget episodes.)

Let’s interpret this costuming consistency as the narrative giving Betty the benefit of the doubt. She’s able to see some things clearly, even if she’s repressed some deeply upsetting shit her father forced her to do. I’m having Old Yeller flashbacks.

I don’t even know if I’m implying anything, I just really like the visual parallel and that I’m being forced to think about it.

It perhaps takes a special kind of zeal to take your half-brother’s confidence that he, too, possesses the serial killer genes and decide not that it means you’re gonna be just fine—but that instead, he’s sus.

But I dunno, gotta break some eggs in order to make an omelette, etc.

I’ll just repeat that genes are not destiny.

Stripes, ribbed knit, short sleeves, pinks and blues—all very Betty.

However, not sure we’ve ever seen Betty in a baseball cap before, even in previous investigation modes!

I think this might be her purple non-investigation jacket that we first saw in 213 (and most recently in 314.) It’s the sturdy jacket she wears when she finds herself in...less savory efforts, shall we say.

But! Another flash-forward!

Poor Archie.

“What’s happening?”

“Wait are we getting up?”

“Okay okay I’ll get up too.”

This sweater is, apparently, divisive. I’ve actually already talked about it a bit in response to an ask. It reminds me of something a Sweater Girl would wear, and I find it really interesting to consider Betty in that context. A sweater is ‘wholesome,’ but a Sweater Girl is seen as sexual—and therefore as something dangerous and corrupting. A patriarchal society fears nothing greater than a woman with some agency. FP storms into this classroom and declares Betty—this whole trio—to be under arrest for murdering Jughead.

This sweater is a bit like Archie’s dial television, or his rotary phone. It’s almost so anachronistic as to be noticeable.

To be brief—there’s something about this sweater and the context of this scene that gives this whole flash-forward a very strange vibe.

Everyone is so shifty-eyed, they have no poker-faces. FP barges in here with two goons behind him, shot Wes Anderson-style. There’s a comics vibe to it. Coen-esque.

But also I just think it’s something Betty would wear: it’s pink, it’s got a Peter Pan collar, it’s got some lace trim. It’s Betty Cooper in disguise as Betty Cooper, and it’s not the first time she’s tried that.

Summary: I think I’ve got a count of 9—that includes 3 separate instances of the Junior FBI uniform, Teenage Betty’s dream outfit, and the flash forward—but doesn’t include Little Betty. So let’s make it 10.

Is Betty a River Vixen??: Again, just on Jug’s wall

That backpack?: Yes, multiple appearances of Backpack 2.0.

My tiny yugioh shrine - before and after pics. The Jounouchi figure still up top, holding a chain and ready to shank you with a scapegoat~ But I thought I’d zoom in so we could see my BEAUTIFUL NEW ISHTAR SIBS CLEARFILE INSTEAD~

I thought my shrine was getting a little too shippy. And especially a little too shippy in the absence of Mai. WHERE IS ALL THE KUJAKU MAI MERCHANDISE?! i need it pls, thx. But, anyhow~ I bought the Ishtar clearfile off of auction. And I thought it might be an old one, but on the back is actually a logo for the 20th anniversary of ygo, last year in 2016. And they weren’t even really in the movie, so now I’m wondering maybe there is also the chance of some recent Mai merchandise out there, hmm, so she will properly be represented in my collection >3>

But yeah, this is just by the exit to my room so i can stop by before i leave for the day and, offer coins or pieces of fruit or whatever and pray at my card game based alter, and maybe then Jounouchi’s good luck will rub off on me a little~

Doujinshi are in another location. And I was only going to talk about my stupid ygo bookshelf shrine thing today, but then my doujin shipment came in and I decided FUCK IT i will brag about my crippling lack of impulse control cool swag all at once if i want to... Under the cut-

If you remember this one~

tdah~ Basically it seems like a Kaiba Corp has put out a game, some kind of ridiculous fantasy RPG where Atem is some kind of Ron the Death Eater villain and Jou may or may not be the princess or smthn. And Mokuba invites Jounouchi over to play it or playtest it or something of that nature. Which seems like as good a premise as any for this kind of thing. And it’s got all the cute platonic Joukuba vibes which is a plus~

But yeah, Jounouchi goes over to Mokuba’s place, has some kind of fight with Seto, and some kind of conversation with Atem, and Mokuba’s kind of confused or upset about something, and then Jou gets all cute and announces that he and Kaiba are dating~ which i’m pretty sure Seto didn’t want Mokuba knowing about or whatever~

But, see, now I’m making this doujin sound sweet when, to be really blunt, i didn’t like it. At some point Seto slaps Jounouchi across the face for something.

I guess I shouldn’t pass judgement when I can’t even read the moon runes that explain why this has happened, but- no. (I’m trying to articulate. It’s not that I think Jou and Seto are incapable of being violent with one another (jfc how hypocritical would it be of me) but there’s something about the whys and the hows~? in my mind, Seto doesn’t gets hands on with that kind of thing unless it’s landing a measured martial arts blow in self defense, or lashing out from a place of extreme vulnerability - the kind that involves him being five seconds away from curling up in a ball of self-protection. So... Seto being collected and composed and instigating violence on Jounouchi’s triggers all my ‘no’ responses. And I also doubt Jounouchi would take that kind of thing without complaint, unless he was actually raving or spiraling and it was, like, a calm-the-fuck-down slap. I think he would definitely retaliate with shouting and intimidation, if not a physical blow. With Jounouchi it’s a little harder for me to define what would prompt physical violence, partly because i think his idea of what violence is is narrower than mine, and doesn’t include things like grabbing somebody’s jacket collar and shaking them around. But, hmm, I think by the time he’s through canon he doesn’t exactly break out the fistcuffs lightly.)

The point was that this doujin made it to the top of my shit list very fast. And I was concerned because, see, I had been avoiding buying KaiJou (in that order) doujins because most of them kind of do this thing to me and completely miss the glass cannon type of volatile fragility I see as being kind of central to Kaiba’s character. But then I caved and ordered a whole bunch. But, actually, I was pleasantly surprised by the other couple of ones I bought, so maybe the curse has finally lifted~ I liked this one in particular-

But, tbh, it also knew the way into my heart~

First of all, I got POLARIS and it was good!

I don’t know what to share about it other than that because it was mostly porn. But I felt like it was kind of sweet and sentimental and Kaiba and Atem going on silly dates at the beginning with gorgeous background details. Also they sit on the throne together at the end and look very in love teehee~

But, yes, thank you for reccing~ I enjoyed a lot~!

BUT- !!! More importantly this finally came in the mail!

To answer your question, it’s a normal rivalshipping anthology. 112 pages, comics and fic~ Exciting things happen like Yuugi and Kaiba playing twister~

And in another story they’re out travelling and having punishment games of some sort and Yuugi gets a beard painted on his face~

AND HIS MOM OMG!! I love when odd characters cameo in my doujins. I think you can tell~

But, no, I lied- I addition to the anthology I got all this other stuff too~

I don’t know. There’s a set of tiny playing cards you have to disentangle. Some have exciting images.

Notably Jounouchi and Atem are the jokers, heh~

I still haven’t checked out the CD. This is a very rushed post where I don’t attempt to read things carefully or any of that~ But it comes with a manual with a bunch of character avatars - lots of expressions for Yuugi and Kaiba, as well as one avatar each for Jou, Anzu, baby Seto, Kisara, and BEWD. So I think it may be a visual novel of sorts. Undetermined~

I also got another anthology- a Yuugi-centric one.

It’s mostly rivalshipping, which I’d expect. rivalshipping is really popular in the jp fandom. but, tbh, i enjoyed the more odd ships more-

Like Juudai/Manjoume/Yuugi... Kaiba walks in on the Kohais basically crushing yuugi with love after this it’s so cute~

And Otogi/Yuugi. Ah~ I love the DDM chapters in the manga and how softly Otogi warms up to Yuugi~

A Duel Monsters themed art book I spent too much on~ I’m ashamed to say I don’t recognise a whole lot of the cards

and i found a couple of apprenticeshipping doujins on BOOTH, but none of them wow-ed me really~

although I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how Mana inherited the Ring in manga canon. I feel like there are things to consider here. This picture struck me as a result.

Alright~ And now for my favourites~

OMG! A WHOLE DOUJIN ABOUT MALIK AND HIS SIBLINGS!!! I think this one was a predictable fave. I loved it so, sooo much. I was absolutely filled with quality Malik and Rishid moments.

It looks like Malik tries to feed Ra a revival slime and gets eaten himself. I don’t know. But it was good. I’m so happy~ Ishtar family doujins. My life is complete. not really. i can’t die until i finish my fics.

Okay, but my other fave I didn’t see coming at all.

I don’t ship this! I shouted into the void. But nobody really believed her, not even herself. It’s too late for me. I’m just multiship trash. I will ship anything you put in front of me...

Okay, but the real reason I decided to get this was because of this preview panel. Of course I knew it was puzzlleship. But actually I love Mana and vaseshipping for reals. And this was so cute and the art was so pretty I thought- We might as well check the rest of it out~ (the idea of top!Yuugi didn’t hurt either...)

And then jackels happened~ And this kind of ethereal magic stuff~

There was some confusion I think with the cultural imagery in the doujin. Some of it looked vaguely Indic to my untrained eye but- I don’t know what to say, the art was so gorgeous and detailed.

And the smut was all facials and frot so obviously the doujin artist has my gd number, smh.

And Jou appeared near the end, looking amazing, and Jou is automatically about +50 points for any doujin.

I don’t know what to say. Very nice. Would recommend.

Also- just fyi- I do buy doujins for things that aren’t ygo. pls forgive my focus on my ygo obsession tho.

I’m really glad I stumbled across this in the hetalia tag~

And there’s a picture of Tifa being so bad at games at the golden saucer that Nanaki, who doesn’t even have opposable thumbs, can defeat her in PvP. Beautiful~
