"but they've been building up mileven for 4 seasons!" my brother in christ. el got attached to mike cause he was the first guy her age that she met after she ran away and el was the first girl who showed any signs of any kind of interest in mike and mike felt like he had to have a girlfriend or he wouldn't be "normal". hell, even ted knows mike has zero interest in girls (”our son with a girl?” ), mileven was so forced it's crazy. they were kids who kissed a WEEK after they met because they felt like they had to, at least mike did cause el didn't even understand what the fuck love is. she didn't even have time to understand herself before understanding relationships with mileven being so rushed. it was not love at first sight, mike was ready to send her back where she came from right after she took them to will. mike's life DID NOT start the day he met her in the woods, he was there to find will in the first place. and when they found "will's" body? he literally almost spat in her face screaming ”what is wrong with you?”. and now when they're older, they still don't work. they don't understand each other, they're not giving each other what they deserve, they're making each other feel like they're in a room with no exit. mileven is toxic as a couple and they're SO much better as friends. i rest my case
rewatching season one really makes me see how will's right, mike is the heart.
he's the one who insisted to look for will to hopper.
he's the one who convinced lucas, and dustin by proxy, to ignore the adults and look for will.
he is the one who brings up the fact that el is scared and hurt while lucas and dustin are yelling.
all these examples are within ep 1 and the first fourty seconds of episode two. mike was always the heart. he just lost his way after outside expectations. at the end of the day, he is the care and love and protection of the group.
of course mike is going to date el even if it doesn't make him happy. of course he's going to conform to ideals of the outside world. all he wants are for his friends to be happy, so he'll conform to the expectations of what the outside world says he should want, what his friends think he wants, what el wants. fuck, even what he thinks will wants, since the painting. he is the perfect victim for comphet, because it was never about him. it was always about his friends.

i will never get over these cause we could've had this! We could've had elmike being those best friends who are super clingy and affectionate with each other but still super platonic! because boys and girls can be friends! because you can love someone very intensely and it's still platonic! because you can be really physically affectionate with someone and it's!! still!! platonic!!
Jumping into season 3 we immediately get to know that Lucas and Max are in an established relationship. Lucas always includes Max in their summer activities and combines hanging out with his girlfriend with hanging out with his best friends. Max being a member of their party too, makes it only logical that they’d all hang out together. Lucas and Max never ditch the party to hang out alone!
The interesting thing is, Mike and El are in a relationship too, though Mike does not include El in their summer activities and oftentimes rather hangs out with El than with his best friends and that even though El is in their party too! They’ve been shown to ditch the party multiple times
This is a stark contrast and we are definitely supposed to pick up on Lumax having a healthier relationship-friendship-balance than marshmallow pie. Also, I don’t know if I’m the only one that felt that way but even though both couples got together at the Snow Ball, Lucas and Max kinda seem like they’ve been together for longer than measuring cup has.
Lumax just radiates the energy that they have more experience with love and being in a relationship [even though they talked about how they’ve broken up like 6 times haha].
Moving forward, mozzarella sticks is in crisis mode and both El and Mike seek out one of the Lumax-members to ask for help. El asks Max for advice and Mike asks Lucas for guidance. In our scenario, Max and Lucas are the love experts! They know what they’re talking about!
Mike asks Lucas how he should apologize to El and Lucas guides him through it all. Mike is totally clueless and Lucas knows exactly what to do. And that’s literally the key to that whole scene! Lucas is the love expert and it’s his actions that are supposed to convey what love is like: when you upset the one you love, you know exactly what to do to make it up to them!
El and Max have more of an upbeat attitude towards the whole break up situation. But still, Max, the love expert, doesn’t fail to share her wisdom about love with El. While Lucas’ focus was more on “what you do when you’re in love”, Max’s focus is more on “what they do when they’re in love with you” and she literally tells El that Mike will come crawling back to her, begging for forgiveness.
The focus altogether is on how Mike would act when he’s in love.
The thing is. None of those things happen with El. Mike is clearly shown not to have a single clue how to react when he upsets her and he also does not come knocking on her door and beg for forgiveness.
But both things happen with Will.
Mike upsets Will and immediately offers him to continue the campaign. When that doesn’t work out and Will leaves, Mike goes straight after him and tries to apologize and explain himself. He ends up upsetting Will again and then bikes through the pouring rain to apologize again, knocking on his door, begging for forgiveness!
The way Mike acts around Will mirrors the love experts’ depiction of what it’s like to be in love perfectly!
Season 3 literally tried to show us that Mike is actually in love with Will!
Reminder that El talking with Mike and giving her blessing is not just a stepping stone on the road to Byler but actually a part of his arc that is at least equally important in message to him and us about the unwavering nature of their love.
Something something S5 Jane starting to explore platonic realitionships instead that one romantic she has been struggling with and ended for her own growth something something
Jane: Lucas can I go to the hospital with you?
•
Jane: Will! I can go with you
•
Jane: If you need help with that
*looks confused at something Dustin is building*
Jane: I would love to help
•
Jane: Can I go to the library too? Please Nancy
•
Jane: Jonathan! I can help you get the grocery!
•
Jane curled up on the couch with Joyce
•
Jane *stepping in Hoppers office*: I brought you dinner, dad
•
Jane: I just don't understand what I've been doing wrong Mike!
Mike: Maybe next time tell them why you want to spend time with them. You know like you did with me.
So I was washing dishes when I had a flashback to Will's first word to Mike being "Yes" (s2 ep8), while El's is "No" (s1 ep2). The foreshadowing from the start I cannot!

Summary:
Mike is in love with Will. Deeply and utterly just head-over-heels in love with his best friend. However, he wasn't as discreet about his feelings as he should have been. El knows because she isn't a fool and has suspected it for a while.
In the end, though, they will always be together and be there for each other. Whether it be in a romantic way or not.
