Darling,

Did you have a good Chinese New Year? I assume you must have been very busy embracing the pomelos, biscuits, and cakes. It’s a profitable time but it must also have consumed so much of you. Since new beginnings require just that…new beginnings, I would like to be honest with you. Your obsessive behaviour is making our relationship toxic. When I shop for groceries, not only do I see you clinging to every fruit and vegetable, you have even wrapped yourself around almost every single item on the shelf. On the beach, I see you floating carelessly in the water and then wash up onto the shore in billions of tiny bits. Why do you never leave? You remain in the ocean for so long that marine animals suck you in, thinking you’re food! That’s the last straw for me! Imagine how I feel when you invade the food chain and end up in my fish curry? Are you trying to make me sick – or kill me? My friends and family love you so much that they think they can’t do without you. I’m not being jealous but can you give others a chance too? Glass, for example, is just as talented. She may be fragile but she doesn’t disintegrate and give us toxins. There’s Bamboo too. She’s tall and gangly but really very strong. Why not let them venture into people’s lives in a bigger way? You don’t have to be so possessive and be everywhere. Spreading yourself too thin will just lead you to breakdown into tiny pieces again. And guess who will have to clean up the mess bit by bit? Can I give you some advice? Try to recharge and recycle more often and while you are at it reduce yourself. Don’t ruin your life by being cheap and useless. Be a reusable member of society and quit being self-servingly single-use. Always remember to offer yourself for a refill; otherwise you will end up buried in a landfill. I want you to know that you’ve brought so much joy to my life. You were my toys in childhood, my stationary in school, my sugary pleasure in a bottle and at one time, almost my everything.

You made my world a better place. Your ability to make things light and flexible and not compromise on strength and clarity gave me conveniences I could only dream of. So it really pains me to write this, but our relationship now is so much garbage and is suffocating my beloved home. We should see less of each other and find some room for more sustainable alternatives. I have to go now. I have to empty the trash. Yours truly, Ernest

Wind Dancer . Walking along a bluff in Cole Park on Corpus Christi Bay I came upon this beautiful, graceful sculpture. . I can see why they placed a wind-inspired piece here; there is such a strong, steady breeze coming across the bay. There is even a Windsport Launch in the park, the wind is so steady. . As I walked the edge of the bluff, some twenty-five feet above the stone beach, glints of bright colors kept catching my eye. I knew right away it was trash, mostly single-use plastic. It was mingled and mixed with stone as far as I could see in each direction. . I climbed down and looked closer. There were glass and aluminum bits too. Having lived within walking distance of coastal bays and ocean shorelines most of my adult life, I know that glass eventually rounds and smooths and can even become pretty. I know that plastic and aluminum do not. . Most plastic is petroleum based, as far as I know. Came from the earth originally. . It’s pretty fucked up that we are returning it to the earth this way. . You can see more, including an impromptu interview with Betty, a city worker tasked with daily cleanup of larger pieces of trash, in my Stories, or Trash moments. . As I wrote to several who responded to my story, I’d like to find out more about the currents and wind patterns here to see if this is coming all the way across the Gulf or is more local to Texas and Louisiana, and if it’s hurricane driven from landfills in part, of just what makes up the biggest portions of this kind of pollution. . This bay is protected by the barrier of Mustang and Padre Islands, so I don’t know if currents from the greater Gulf are at play of it’s all more local. . Only 9% of plastic has been recycled. That is not an impressive number. That means over 90% of plastic trash ends up in the oceans, landfills, and scattered in the environment. These plastics stay in our ecosystem for decades and even longer. Over time these plastic break down into smaller and smaller pierces adding to microplastic pollution. We had a much needed day off yesterday and headed to the coast in Betsy van (who blessed us with not breaking down until we were limping distance from Sam's!). Whilst there we did a very quick beach clean up - simply picking up any plastic waste we found on our beach walk. Pictured is some of it (there was some rope bits and a weird faceless plastic soldier toy still in my pocket when I snapped this!) here and it's pretty shocking really ... due to the strong winds and sea mist we didn't even walk far or for long and we found all of this! Please do take a carrier bag in your pocket when you next head to the coast and pick up everything which shouldn't be there.
