Day 640. It seems I'm always learning something interesting about Istanbul since I've been back. The cafe where I had tea overlooking the Golden Horn is called the Pierre Loti Cafe after the French naval officer, novelist and Turkophile, Pierre Loti. (1850-1923). His first published novel was called Aziryade; semi autobiographical about a naval officer who falls in love with a Harem girl (1879). I think I'll read it. Marcel Proust was inspired by Loti. I've never been able to get past the first 20 pages of Proust's opus Swann's Way or Remembrance of Things Past though I did read Alain de Botton's on How Proust Can Save Your Life. At any rate there is so much to Istanbul and Turkey. And I finished Baldwin's book No Name In The Street. The only book of his that has a signed epigraph: New York, San Francisco, Hollywood, London, Istanbul, St Paul de Vence, 1967-1971.
