“My dear brother, Our beloved father has borne the news of Hamilton's loss with that fortitude for which he is so remarkable—his affliction is indeed inexpressible but not of that violent nature as to occasion fear on his account—he supposes that you will hasten immediately here, but it is his wish you should proceed directly to New York to comfort our afflicted Sister & to give her every assistance in your power—God bless you my dear brother let us hear from you immediately on your arrival.”
— Catharine Schuyler Malcolm to Philip Jeremiah Schuyler, [July 12, 1804].

I have the painful task to inform you that General Hamilton was this morning wouned by that wretch Burr but we have every reason to hope that he will recover. May I advice that you repair immediately to my father, as perhaps he may wish to come down — My dear Sister bears with saintlike fortitude this affliction; The Town is in consternation, and there exists only the expression of Grief & Indignation.

I actually discovered this now holy shet-
In “Satisfied,” Angelica sings, “My father has no sons, so I’m the one who has to social climb for one,” thus justifying her need to marry rich (and therefore not marry penniless Alexander).
But this line is, in fact, totally untrue and likely included for narrative convenience.
Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy were three of five sisters who lived to adulthood, along with Cornelia and Catharine Schuyler. Their parents, Catharine Van Rensselaer Schuyler and Philip Schuyler, also had three sons who lived to adulthood: John Bradstreet Schuyler, Philip Jeremiah Schuyler, and Rensselaer Schuyler. The couple had 15 children in total, though only the eight above survived childhood.
Shocked? Me too.

A quick report of the new family reunion;
Philip Schyler, the father of Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton and father in law to Alexander Hamilton Laurens, has returned, as well as his wife, Catherine Schuyler, and their son, Philip Jeremiah Schuyler.
And so, the current number of Schuylers has been effectively trippled since Eliza left us!
So far, Alexander has been getting on wonderfully with his in-laws, as well as John Laurens Hamilton who has this time not insulted, threatened or challenged to duel no one from the Schuyler family.
An another member who has unofficially joined the family lately has been Micha Poole. By John he is considered a brother (as so said by John's husband), and by kids an uncle (as Philip has already once called him uncle). A most notable geese-and-bugs-phobe, he has so far been getting along wonderfully with everyone!
Elias Kellehers father has also supposedly returned, however we all know the reputation that man who barely can hold the title of 'father' has. I hope the best for Elias.
John and Alexander have returned from their trip to Nevis, which should be getting discussed in the next article, and upon their return Lewis was quickly caught sneaking back in and grounded. Perhaps he was visiting his 'friend' Quill?
Not much to report on the rumour front- other then a possible Philip illegitimate and the trip to Nevis and it's theories why it came about- however, both of these are olden news.
More people joined as well such as Sybil and Montgomery, but at this point girl. I can't.
Tidbits of information and rumors from all around are always appreciated

AH’s Nepotism and Rensselaer Schuyler
I always love AH’s aim of getting as much of the Schuyler (and Van Cortlandt and Van Rensselaer and Schuyler/Livingston) clan in good employ as possible. He doesn’t omit doing likewise for his Hamilton first cousin, Robert, and John Church, even when AH had “no reason to believe the employment would be acceptable to him.”
To the letters:
I send you a number of applications for Military appointments with br[i]ef notes of my opinion.
Allow me to remind you in writing of my nephew Philip Church1 whom I warmly recommend for a Captaincy in the Infantry. He is the eldest son of his father, has had a good education is a young man of sense of genuine spirit and worth—of considerable expectation in point of fortune. I shall esteem his appointment to this grade a personal favour, while I believe that it will consist with every rule of propriety.
There are two other young Gentlemen whom I must also recommend to your attention. They are Volckert Peter Van Rensselaer and Jeremiah H. Van Rensselaer nephews of Mrs. Schuyler.2 They are of honest and brave blood and of fair character—I recommend one as a first the other as a second Lieutenant. AH to McHenry, 28July1798
And a subsequent one:
The list comprises the names you sent me and some others which have come directly to me. Besides these there are a number of applications with my Remarks upon them which were put up in a packet and either transmitted to you or delivered to Mr. Lewis to be delivered to you when I was last at Philadelphia & you will find in a letter of mine written then some names which I believe do not appear elsewhere; among them two of the names of Rensselear nephews of Mrs. Schuyler.
Give me leave now to mention to you Renssellaer* Schuyler son of the General who married a daughter of General Tenbroeck of Albany & who is desirous of being appointed Captain of a Troop of Horse. This Gentleman has many things in his favour. He is intelligent active and spirited. But I ought not to conceal from you that he has committed imprudences which have been painful to his father; whose heart needs consolation with respect to him and would derive it from his success in his present application. I have the strongest hope that he would make a very good officer. If the Captaincy of a Troop is unattainable, I shall be glad to see him appointed a first Lieutenant in the Corps of Horse. AH to McHenry, 21Aug1798
It’s just so appropriate that AH is again trying to run interference between Philip Schuyler and one of PS’s own kids who have displeased their father. AH also performs this role for Angelica and Philip Jeremiah in 1789 and there are references that he did it for Cornelia after her elopement. Those poor Schuyler kids, with their papa reminding them (and others) of how Hamilton and their sister Eliza are the good examples they should be following!
Rensselaer (1773-1847) fell out with his father over his gambling habits, which left him in a sizable debt that Philip paid off himself. From here:
In the matter of personal debt, Schuyler informs Hamilton (5 November 1797) that he is willing to pay off the gambling debts of his 28-year-old son, Rensselaer, if he promises to abstain from gaming. After that, Schuyler plans to "place him on a very valuable farm which he may have decently, if he will, and if he will not his becoming now insolvent that he will not be able to borrow any money with facility."
Father and son seem to get along again, as there are mentions of the Hamilton and Church kids (and Angelica, Margarita, and young Catharine born 1781) visiting him. See here for copy and transcription of Angelica S. Church’s letter to him re Philip Hamilton.
Rensselaer married Elizabeth Ten Broek in 1793. She was a first cousin of Stephen Van Rensselaer III, Margarita’s husband.**
*It would not be until around 1800 that AH started to consistently spell his mother-in-law’s maiden name correctly - only about 20 years after marrying into the family! I think he finally got a handle on the way the family spelled it.
**The amount of inter-marriage and relations through marriage is something.
A small detail, but one I did not realize Catharine VR Schuyler’s parents were both alive until 1783 - Johan (John) Van Rensselaer and Engeltie (little angel - thus Angelica later on) Livingston. I wonder what kind of relationship ESH, and then AH, had with him. BTW, Engelite’s mother was a Schuyler, another example of that whole Schuyler-Van Rensselaer intermarriage thing.

Philip Jeremiah Schuyler by Gilbert Stuart, 1807. Happy birthday Philip!
“251 Years ago, Philip and Catharine Schuyler’s middle son was born. Philip recorded the event in the family’s Dutch bible, writing, ‘January the 20th was born our eight child named Philip Jeremiah, baptized by Domine Eliardus Westerlo. Witnesses Robert Van Renselaer and Barbara Schuyler. The Lord grant that he may grow up to the glory of God and according to His will.’ [...] Philip Jeremiah possessed every quality his brothers, John Bradstreet and Rensselaer, lacked, according to their father. He was a studious and well-educated boy. As a child, he was instructed in English grammar, French, Catechism, and the German flute among other subjects. He likely received some tutoring at the Academy at Albany, as a 1783 receipt indicates, as well.
While his brothers, especially Rensselaer, were competent students, Philip Jeremiah was the only son to go to college. In 1787, at the age of 19, Philip Jeremiah studied at Columbia College (now Columbia University). He studied with William Cochran, who taught Latin and Greek at the college. As the only Schuyler son to attend college, his father had high expectations for him. Elder brother Johnny had proven to be a lousy businessman, much to Schuyler’s disappointment. Although Rensselaer, aged 14 when Philip Jeremiah entered college, was still young, he would eventually become addicted to gambling and accrue a large amount of debt. Philip Jeremiah quickly became his father’s one chance at a son achieving renown. He likely hoped for Philip Jeremiah to become a lawyer.
Yet it seems as if Philip Jeremiah didn’t finish his coursework at Columbia. Instead, he did something his father did not want him to do, and something that surprised his family. Philip Jeremiah, the golden child, eloped. [...] Philip Jeremiah did two things that likely infuriated his father: he dropped out of Columbia College and eloped. He likely dropped out of Columbia College to elope and start his married life. Philip Jeremiah was twenty when he married Sarah Rutsen, who was eighteen at the time. They married on May 31, 1788. Where they married is not known, although her family home is certainly a possibility, since it doesn’t seem to have been an elopement for her, but only for her husband. [...]
His primary occupation was in agricultural pursuit, however, like his father, Philip Jeremiah entered the political field at both the State and Federal levels, serving in the New York State Assembly in 1798 and the United States Congress from 1817-1819. At the time of his father’s death in 1804, Philip Jeremiah was named as one of the executors of the will, along with his brother Rensselaer Schuyler, and brothers-in-law John Church and Stephen van Rensselaer.
Sarah had passed away the year before, in 1803, leaving Philip Jeremiah with four children. He later remarried, this time to a woman named Mary Ann Sawyer. Philip Jeremiah and Mary had only one child who survived to adulthood, however they eventually helped to raise several of the children of his sister, Cornelia, after the successive deaths of both herself and her husband in 1806 and 1810 respectively. Philip Jeremiah died, likely of tuberculosis, in 1835 at the age of sixty-seven.”

I was wondering if you could talk a bit about the schuyler siblings and their relantionships with one another. I've searched info on the internet but other than Angelica, Eliza and Peggy, there really isn't much out there (to be fair there isn't that much about Peggy either). Btw your writing is amazing, please keep up the awesome work.
Thank you! And it’s very true, Eliza and Angelica’s relationship does seem to get the most attention. I’d recommend the Schuyler Mansion blog as a great resource for information about the other Schuyler siblings. “Schuyler Sibling Land Squabble” was a particularly good post, covering the turmoil that broke out between Eliza and her younger sisters, Cornelia and Catherine, after their father’s death. There’s a great follow-up called, “My Dear Sister: Eliza and Caty Post-Schuyler Siblings Land Squabble” detailing Eliza’s relationship with her youngest sister as they grew older. I also enjoyed their post about Philip Jeremiah’s elopement.
Eliza, Angelica, and Peggy were all close in age, which helps explain their particularly close relationship, but Eliza seems have gotten along well with all her siblings up until her father’s death. Alexander, who was so distant with his own brother, seemed to relish his relationships with all of Eliza’s numerous siblings. When her brother John passed away at only thirty, she and Alexander helped look after his son. When Philip Jeremiah and Cornelia eloped against Philip Schuyler’s wishes, Alexander stood by them, writing on Philip Jeremiah’s behalf and allowing Cornelia and her husband, Washington Morton, to come stay with them in New York. The value Alexander placed on his relationships with all the Schuyler family is illustrated by a letter from Philip Schuyler during the heightened tensions surrounding Philip Jeremiah’s elopement, dated 20 May 1789:
Your anxiety that the Harmony of the family should be compleat, affords me the most pleasing sensations and I am happy that I can assure you that your wishes have been anticipated at least as far as immediately depends on me. Philip4 has visited me since his return from England he is returned to his wife with a message from me that will afford her comfort & confidence in my friendly intentions towards her. I have charged him to bring her here immediately on the Arrival of his Mother & Sisters—and since the receipt of yours and Angelicas5 letter announcing that she is to come by land, I have written Philip and Sally6 to accompany their Sister home. Mrs. Schuyler before she left this was persuaded that It7 could answer no one valuable purpose to continue unreconciled I encouraged the sentiment And trust in a perfect reconciliation on her part.

Philip Jeremiah Schuyler: winner of several “World’s Best Brother” awards, top competitor in national spelling bees since first grade, and officially my child. The only thing he can’t do is talk to girls, he gets all stuttery and rambles on about technical stuff while awkwardly laughing when he sees a cute girl.
p.s.: I know War and Peace was written way later than when Jer was a kid, but I was going for a “musicals reading musicals” type thing. I hope that doesn’t bother the history buffs too much.

Sky Schuyler
“They’re so cute when they’re asleep.”
Sky Schuyler was on his way home for Winter Break, he’d broken family tradition and unlike his sisters was getting his degree at New York University. He braced himself for the inevitable onslaught of small children clamoring around him. Two of his older sisters and their families were in town for the holidays as well.
Said onslaught was to be in the form of Eliza’s three eldest kids Philip, Angie and Junior who were ages, six, four and two. The other children, Eliza’s youngest and Peggy’s only child James and Stephanie were too young to be wreaking too much havoc.
Sky pulled up in front of his family home, unlike last year in the wake of his father’s death his mother had once again set up their Christmas decorations outside the house. It made Sky smile, he missed his dad, they all did.
The snow crunched under Sky’s feet as he walked towards the shoveled path to their front door, he lingered for a moment inhaling deeply, preparing himself for the ambush.
He rang the bell and he heard the shuffling of feet, and the door was hastily opened by… Eliza.
“Hey,” His sister smiled speaking in a hushed tone, “come on in.”
Sky looked around for any sign of his nieces and nephews, but other than the toys he spied in the living room there was nothing.
“Where is everyone?” Sky found himself adopting the same hushed tone as his sister.
“Mom is baking, Peggy is on the phone with one of her clients, Alex is in the library going through some of dad’s books and the kids are napping.
“Really?” Sky raised his brow, the hushed tone now making sense.
“They do sleep occasionally,” Eliza laughed, “enjoy it while it lasts.”
“This I have to see,” Sky grinned.“Well let’s get your stuff upstairs and maybe you can take a peek,” Eliza replied, “I almost forgot you haven’t met James yet have you?”
“Nope,” Sky shook his head, “which is totally not cool, how else am I supposed to establish the fact that I’m the cool uncle?”
Eliza rolled her eyes, “Come on.”
Sky shrugged off his coat, hanging it up in the closet before grabbing his stuff and following Eliza upstairs to his room. After dropping his things on his bed he found Eliza quietly opening the door to one the many guest rooms were the kids were sleeping.
Philip was asleep with his arms around Angie, Junior was curled up sucking his thumb while James and Stephanie were asleep in a travel crib, Sky was in awe.
“They’re cute when they’re asleep,” Sky spoke up.
Eliza smiled, “Well let’s just hope they stay that way a little while longer.
