One of the highlights of the trip has been the Philadelphia zoo. I’m extremely biased to my local zoo but I think they have some incredible enrichment at the Philly zoo and might go on record as saying it has some legs up on mine.
We happened to catch the end of the Galapagos tortoise time. The trainer would place her target down and they’d amble eagerly toward it for a bite of delicious watermelon.
But the best bit was two who were munching together.

They ran out of watermelon and slowly both their necks rose as they simultaneously decided to fight each other for more delicious sticky treats (which neither of them had any longer).
The trainer huffed in exasperation and marched over, ramming her stick down and ordering like a drill sergeant, “Girls! Target!”
Both feisty ladies immediately desisted their display and turned obediently to the magic yellow circle of watermelon.

Check out this BIG blue gorilla sculpture by Don Kennell at Philadelphia Zoo made out of car hoods! Photographed this past weekend during a zoo visit.
“Our big blue gorilla sits 13-feet tall and 12-feet deep! It's constructed from around 55 salvaged car hoods. These car parts retain their original factory paint - only a UV resistant clear coat was added.
This commanding sculpture is part of a process of artistic transformation where something discarded is given new life. Artist Don Kennell from Santa Fe, New Mexico, uses junkyard cars to remind us about habitat loss to animals often impacted by the construction of highways, parking lots, and facilities for cars and other modern demands.”

Thought you might enjoy this nonsense
While primates shouldn't be exploited for advertising or entertainment, this is totally fine. Giving zoo animals safe items that are branded with local sports teams is harmless, and can be a good way to get local support for the zoo. So while that orangutan is not a sports fan, this is entirely ethical. He's probably just happy to have a new blanket!

This gorilla looks like it wants you to pull up a chair next to the fireplace so it can read you a story.

Exploring with the Philadelphia CityPASS
I’m no stranger to CityPASS. Previous times I’ve used it provided me with such an in-depth look into a new-to-me place. When I was headed to Philadelphia, I was thrilled to see that they offer a Philly CityPASS and that all of my must-sees were included. With CityPASS, visitors pay a flat rate for their passes and select from several popular attractions in the city. I’ve had the pleasure of…
