here's what i've been working on for the past year! my ceramic and reclaimed wood and wire dinosaur is all done and i'm so excited to move on to figurines and more biology-inspired pieces.
for size reference: i'm about 6' tall! she's a big boy :')
extremely cool news - i'm one of the designers in meow wolf denver's first fashion show!!! this get up is based on whale falls and ocean trash, and made up of entirely secondhand materials - many of which i actually picked up as litter. super excited to get to attend the show and see this piece walk in it later this month!!!
24-4. Mixed media, with recycled/repurposed material including scrap wood and paper, dried acrylic paint peelings, and discarded plastic packaging.
I fiddled with this one for a long time, and I'm still frustrated with bits of it, but I'm trying not to let my perfectionism get in the way of moving forward! At least I learned a lot about how to get the effects I want, and how not to.
The material that makes up the center background of the bottom part of this piece is a composite of shavings from carving my layered paper "stones" and peeled-off bits of acrylic paint from old projects and palettes, stuck together with acrylic medium, sliced to show the strata, and rearranged.
Check out this BIG blue gorilla sculpture by Don Kennell at Philadelphia Zoo made out of car hoods! Photographed this past weekend during a zoo visit.
“Our big blue gorilla sits 13-feet tall and 12-feet deep! It's constructed from around 55 salvaged car hoods. These car parts retain their original factory paint - only a UV resistant clear coat was added.
This commanding sculpture is part of a process of artistic transformation where something discarded is given new life. Artist Don Kennell from Santa Fe, New Mexico, uses junkyard cars to remind us about habitat loss to animals often impacted by the construction of highways, parking lots, and facilities for cars and other modern demands.”
I'm also happy to announce that my teacher finally graded my work

i don't know how many of you folks on tumblr are anywhere near me, but in the off-chance any of you are close to denver and have a free tuesday afternoon next month, i will be leading a crafting workshop at meow wolf this april! which is a crazy thing to say!!!! we'll be making recycled trash critters like the beautiful beasties above in preparation/celebration of MW's 2nd ever recycled fashion show which i am also a designer in! wow!!!
