Vanilla perfumes for all vanilla lovers. This note is sweet, warm, sensual, and definitely a reliable crowd pleaser. It’s good to have a few vanillas in your collection as they make great choices to use as a base for layering with other fragrances even if you don’t want to wear a vanilla on it’s own.

Drugstore Perfume analysis yay!
Characters:
'She' - being sung about
'I' - the narrator
'They' - ?? (the haters)
Key:
Bold / Italics = Lyrics
Non italics = Analysis
She waits at windows
Her dreams don't show in color,
and she sleeps
For now
But she just waits around
Whole first section basically saying she is stuck and seemingly given up on her 'dreams' (they don't show in color meaning they haven't been realised yet) she's waiting at windows, watching other people live their lives whilst she's stuck behind the glass, waiting around
Wishing she could leave, single mothers
In parking lots
And wear another girl's evening out
This place lets you down, easy
She wants to escape her current life, the responsibilities that come with it the monotony and wear another girl's evening out. She seems to believe she's incapable of living her life like the other girls and wishes she could. This links to the name of the song as well 'Drugstore Perfume', its a cheaper option, one possibly looked down upon as not a 'proper' perfume, just another way she doesn't fit in with the other girls
She gets up to buy a drink
I notice why when she walks by
There's something caught in her eye,
First mention of 'I'. Something being caught in her eye reminds me of the saying 'a twinkle in your eye' and the use of 'caught' rather than stuck, or a more negative sounding word makes me think its a good thing there's something in her eye, not in a literal sense but as if the 'twinkle' is hope for her dreams, circling back to the first section implying she hasn't fully given up and deep down there's still a chance
she says, That she can't change for love
And she explains how long she's waited for
She wanted more
She can't change for love implies someone has asked her to change, someone who 'loves' her but she just can't even for that. The use of waiting again but the sentence is left unfinished, she's waited for...? At this point we don't know for sure but assumably it's whatever her 'dreams' are. She wanted more, also suggests this isn't what she expected, seems like she's not done anything wrong but is being punished anyways by being kept waiting at the window
Dead leaves, desperate summers
All-ages club, and metal shutters to keep you out
Dead leaves, desperate summers seems to represent time passing, autumn to summer is one whole year so this is referencing how long she's waited and been stuck where she is, years. All-ages clubs probably signifies she's young still and metal shutters I think are more symbolic, she's not necessarily actually been shut out of the clubs but in a metaphorical sense maybe she's not fitting in, people are not including her, she feels left out. but she can't change for love
While we hang around factories
Till we meet each other
Two discount lives and heavy numbers
To keep you down
Factories seems too specific not to be symbolic. Factories are where products are built and made, I think if we know she's young this is a kind of 'coming of age' metaphor, she's hanging around factories, she is the product and she's finding herself, creating herself. This is further backed up by 'two discount lives', products (sometimes made in factories) get discounted. Her life is discounted as it feels broken or unfit or even only half there, because when something is discounted the price is reduced. Also she and the narrator are interacting now, they are a 'we'. Both of them are in the same position thinking their lives are discount, they're both hanging around factories
If I wait around, maybe she
Might come back to say that I'm
Not sure you know my name, that's fine
But take me with you this time, she says
The 'come back' seems like we've jumped forward in time, the narrator was looking back before and now is in the present. seemingly the narrator and her have gone separate ways and the narrator wishes she would come back and want the same as they do, to not be separate. Not sure you know my name, is interesting as if these were two people who'd met already surely they'd know each others names so it's possible these are just characters representing concepts rather than actually people themselves, the narrator not knowing her name meaning she's not something they're familiar with or fully understands or has come to terms with yet. But even as the narrator knows this, they still want her back
That she can't change for love
And she explains how long she's waited for
She wanted more
Chorus again, after the time jump is seems repeating this with no change suggests she still feels this way, she's still waiting, wanting to leave the window, she still wants more than she's been given now
Gone, today
I might just see you around
It hurts but I understand
If you can't find another reason not to stay
This again is the narrator hoping to meet her again saying it hurts to be without her but they understand why she might not want to leave where she is. With where she is, being trapped waiting behind the window from the first section. It's unclear as this part is from the narrators perspective how she feels, whether she would want to stay or not, if she's waiting for something it seems maybe she won't leave until that thing arrives
And while she's walking away, she says
That she can't change for love
And she explains how long she's waited for
She wanted more
And as these days go by
They can't change how long we've waited for
A love that's more
A love that's more
The chorus again but with a twist at the end. The use of the word 'they' for the first time saying 'they can't change', going back to the line 'she can't change for love' seems like the people being referred to here are the people who don't accept her and with the use of 'we' again, the narrator too, and want them to change. But they can't change. And we finally get the answer to what they've been waiting for and dreaming of, 'a love that's more'. More being unconditional. More being without the need for them to change. They're waiting to be accepted as they are. She is still waiting at the window for a love that's more but it seems the narrator is just waiting for her. Going back to the thought she is more like a concept than a character, she could represent the thing people want to change, she's hidden away, waiting to be accepted and loved but the day just isn't coming. Whereas the narrator could be the person who people want to change, they're trying to accept who they are knowing they can't change, they want her to come back so they can keep the aspect of them she represents with them, and out from behind the window. In that sense the love that's more is the love between them, between a person and themself, a person and all the parts of themself everyone else can't accept, self-acceptance. She and the narrator are one in the same. It's a search for self-love
So to try and summarise, it's a song about a personified aspect of the narrator who is hidden away, waiting to be loved. The narrator seems to start off pretty lonely and secluded and insecure then in the face of not being accepted attempt to accept themself, give themself that 'love that's more' as no one else is. It's technically left open ended whether she leaves the window or not but the use of 'we' at the end and the repeating chorus could imply a happy ending (or at least that's what I like to believe)
also I think with a song so complex it's bound to mean a bunch of different things to a bunch of different people so this is just my take on the song, not saying its the only one or even the right one :)

Black Opium Extreme (Yves Saint Laurent, 2021)
Tumblr media
A relatively quick review today, although I may do a What Is [This Note]? follow-up later:
I cannot in good conscience review the original Black Opium. The only time I tried it, I was in an Ulta getting sprayed by an enthusiastic sales associate (we actually bonded over our shared perfume fixation), and I was already covered in HYPNOTIC POISON and Angel. The one thing about Black Opium that came through was a shrill pear note that drowned out everything else, which is really saying something.
So, when I read that the Black Opium Extreme flanker (not to be confused with Intense, Neon, Illicit Green, Nuit Blanche, Floral Shock, or... Baby Cat? ) really focused on the gourmand notes, I thought, let me give this a try. I don't even like coffee, but surely, anything will be better than the Screaming Pear.
Tumblr media
Extreme, per the YSL site: "A shot of adrenaline from extra black coffee is paired with luminous ultra-white flowers, set against a base of sweet, earthy patchouli and heady vanilla. This exhilarating amalgamation of ingredients makes for an intense and long-lasting women’s scent; crafted by Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne, Olivier Cresp and Honorine Blanc."
Now, according to Fragrantica, the original Black Opium has pear, pink pepper, orange blossom, coffee, jasmine, bitter almond, licorice, vanilla, patchouli, cashmeran, and cedar (obviously, I need to order a sample and retry this in earnest).
The newer Extreme variant only has coffee and cacao (specifically, as the top notes you would smell first), jasmine sambac, orange blossom, bourbon vanilla, and patchouli. It's much simpler, it's less woodsy, it's unpeared. I don't even like coffee, but I bet it smells really good with the vanilla and cacao; I'm so hype to try it.
It smells like jasmine.
That's all.
Remember how I told you that jasmine loves me? That I amp tuberose—a similar white floral—like a motherfucker? Yeah. This is 10,000% not a criticism of the perfume itself; I'm saying that my skin chemistry ate all the other notes and breathed out J A S M I N E like a flower-hoarding dragon. The orange blossom might be twined in there, but I can't actually tell it apart at this point. I was so disappointed. I wore Extreme three times; I begged it for some coffee and chocolate notes, I pleaded. After more than two hours of wear, I managed to get it to cough up a mere base of vaguely mocha vanilla (it was very nice) underneath the white floral. I have not yet been able to get anything to come out more clearly than that.
I actually did enjoy wearing it because I do like jasmine, don't get me wrong. But this perfume has six (6) notes in it, and I can only get, like, two and a half to come out. I bet it would be great layered with a coffee or chocolate fragrance; several indie companies offer single notes like that (maybe I can put on a mocha fragrance and just think about jasmine real hard). Black Opium Extreme has been, more than anything, an object lesson in the vagaries of skin chemistry for us. If white florals tend to come out really strongly for you, be warned—or, hell, this might be exactly what you want.

perfume moodboard: serge lutens jeux de peau
you sip your hot chocolate in amusement as the baker grumbles about a batch of bread that ended up more toasted than he intended. a stranger approaches and asks if they can share your table with you. one look at their smile—and the uncrowded cafe—was enough to let you know they’re trouble. you smile back and nod. you never could resist anything that looks delicious.

🚿 Shower Routine
You’re going to double cleanse. You will need an unscented soap or shower gel for the first step, and a scented shower gel for the second.
When you have the unscented gel or soap of your choice, make sure you scrub and that you scrub good. Get all the nooks and crannies absolutely clean. This first step will just clean you properly and get rid of any dead skin or oils so that whatever scented product you apply next will have a clean surface to rest on. It also helps if you shave before this step, but that is completely up to you. For unscented products I recommend anything from dove or sanex. If you can get your hands on shower products that are branded as being hypoallergenic or medically good for the skin, those are usually fragrance free and will serve as a good first cleanse.
Now that you are clean of all residue, grab the scented shower gel of your choice and use that. You can also use a scented soap and then a scented shower gel on top to maximise the fragrance, but if you’re worried your skin will dry out from the soap, the shower gel alone will suffice. Don’t worry though because the moisture steps on this list should restore the moisture for you even if you do decide to use a scented soap in combination to your shower gel. Most perfumes will have a shower gel or lotion to match the fragrance but if your perfume of choice doesn’t have any, choose a shower gel with a scent that compliments at least one of the notes in your fragrance. For example if your perfume of choice has berries anywhere in the top, middle or base notes, reach for a shower gel that is berry based. Same with lotion. Grab one that has any berry listed as it’s scent. If your perfume is gourmand, (dessert like) grab a shower gel or lotion that has vanilla or cocoa/coconut in it. These pair well with sweet perfumes. Vanilla is a good choice for layering with practically anything if you are completely lost for choice. It is a very safe and forgiving note that is present in most, if not all perfumes.
🧴 Moisturising
Now that you are clean, and have used a brilliantly scented shower gel, you need a perfumed body lotion or body butter, whichever you decide on will depend on the season or your skin type. Body butter is better for colder dryer weather and body lotion or mousse is better for summer. If your skin is really dry, use a body butter. Like i said before, if your perfume does not have a matching lotion or butter from the same name and brand, grab a lotion or butter that has something in common scent wise with at least one of the notes listed somewhere in your perfume. For example, if your perfume has green notes somewhere, use a body lotion that leans green, cucumber or aloe. If your perfume is sweet, use a cocoa butter lotion or a vanilla lotion. Vanilla can be used as a base for most things as it’s forgiving.
For this next step you will need a body oil. Apply this after your lotion or butter to maximise moisture so that your perfumes longevity is also maximised. Same rules apply here, use a body oil that either matches your perfume, or one that matches at least one note in your perfume. Some brands even make body oils, like Carolina Herrerra’s original good girl perfume comes with an oil. If you cannot find a scented body oil, go with a light natural subtle smelling oil like almond oil. It will act as an extra moisture layer to maximise your scent. Perfumes last well on moisturised skin.
💐 Layering your scent
Now that you are double moisturised, grab a perfume oil. These are separate from body oils, they are basically a perfume in oil form. Way more concentrated. Again same rules apply. One that matches your fragrance or shares a scent profile with at least one of the notes in your perfume. The brand NEST New York makes great perfume oils, or try a Middle Eastern perfume oil such as Attar. Make sure it has something in common with your perfume though or you’re not gonna achieve the desired result. Apply this perfume oil to your pulse points. These are located on your wrists, base of throat, on your inner elbows, behind your ears, and finally behind your knees.
If you want to be very extra, you can layer a body mist on top of your perfume oil. You can wear these together or forego one depending on the season. If you want to be smelt from space, layer them both. If you want one for the winter, stick with just the perfume oil and skip the mist. And if you want something light for the summer skip the perfume oil and just apply the body mist.
Finally, apply your perfume of choice to your pulse points and twice in the atmosphere then walk into the mist cloud. Now you’re going to smell like a dream! If you’re wondering about EDP vs EDT, the seasonal rule applies here too. I use EDTs and mists in hotter weather because heavier formulas can be too cloying in weather like this, and then I use Oils and EDP in the winter, but if you want to go by season or not is entirely up to you.
🌸 Extra Steps and Tips
To add extra pizzazz to this layering routine, use a hair perfume. Some brands have hair perfumes that are designed to go on the hair and make you smell extra good. Dior and Chanel have a few. If you can’t find a hair perfume, grab your actual perfume and spray it on your hair brush, let it sit for a bit in your brush, and gently run it through your hair. Do not apply your actual perfume directly on your hair if it is not designed for hair. It will dry your hair out. Just apply it on your brush.
Have curly hair and don’t want fragrance drying out your hair or can’t use a brush because it will ruin your curls? If you still want your hair to smell good without the struggles, just spray a little on your hair ties, hair bands, hair ribbons anything that is fabric will absorb fragrance nicely.
Speaking of fabric… SPRAY YOUR PERFUME ON YOUR CLOTHES! It will last extra long. Longer than it would on your skin.
Don’t have scented oils or lotions? Tight on budget? Not to worry, vaseline alone does the job of making your fragrance last long too. Apply vaseline and spray your perfume of choice.
Some perfume brands make matching deodorants, look into those too, but if you cannot find a matching deodorant just use your regular deodorant. This step is just an extra cherry on top if you care at all about matching your deodorant to your fragrance.
Disclaimer: If you have allergies or skin sensitivities be sure to prioritise your health. Perfume is an irritant and if health wise you cannot handle it, please stick to your unscented products. If you’re desperate maybe just spray on your clothes and avoid skin.
🌸 If you guys want a post with perfume layering combos, let me know and i will make one. Now you smell all pretty! Thank you for reading and stay gorgeous! 🌸

I feel like there are roughly two kinds of "painfully weird kid" that you can be during your K-12 school years. the first is your "I am trying so hard to be normal but I just cannot seem to hit the mark. there's just something wrong with me and I don't know how to fix it" and the second is the category I was in, which is your "everyone around me is so incredibly weird but they obviously can't help it so I will just have to accept this."
#being a deeply weird kid in school was definitely an experience#i feel like it's also heightened when you attend a private catholic school#there are just so many more layers of 'oh wow so this is...a thing' to deal with#like i honestly think the shit that private catholic schools do to a kid's head is worse for the normal kids#i was already at a point where i just accepted that my personal perspective of the world was radically different#and you really weren't going to convince me to start loving denim or perfume or makeup#so trying to get me to feel a bunch of religious guilt was also not going to work#i just added it to the long list of things that are important to most ppl that i just don't give a shit about and moved on#honestly being autistic in a private catholic school put me in a much better spot than a normal catholic student#the teachers would say something absolutely batshit insane#like telling us that 'mentally disabled' kids get a free pass to heaven because they have no original sin just like animals#(if u know ur catholic shit u can imagine the multiple layers of 'but wait!' involved in this statement but anyway)#and your normal catholic student would be like 'what?! for real! oh my gosh...but are you sure? oh you are. well...i guess it's true then..#whereas i would be sitting there like 'wow that is...a wild thing to believe. also u were staring at me for that whole speech so...'#like yeah i did get involved in the heated debates because it was hella fun#but in hindsight it would be really fucked up to be an actual catholic kid in that school because jesus christ...#a lot of our teachers even had strong disagreements over belief shit and would make us all take sides#so it wasn't even like unanimous weird stuff pumped at us. it was like conflicting weird stuff#one intense divide i recall was the simple but highly controversial 'do animals go to heaven?' debate#most said 'yes' with or without conditions#one teacher said 'yes and also disabled kids' which was fucked up and definitely directed at me whenever i was in the room#like some kind of fucked up 'it's okay because you'll get a better life in the afterlife sweetie' kind of thing#while others were like 'ANIMALS? in my heaven? I think not! what did they even do to earn it?! nothing!'#students tended to also be very invested and distressed by the thought of no family pets in heaven#but also very conflicted based on the facts being presented by both sides and also which teacher was their favorite so...

Today׳s combo✨🍁🍂
Alive (Eau de Parfum) by Boss is a beautiful fall scent. To me, it smells like a plum cake, full of spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, being baked in the middle of the woods.
Layered with VS bare vanilla and a vanilla body cream, it really helps to pull the sweetness in this perfume.
It’s not over cloying, performance is amazing- I get 7+ hours of wear with baby. Sillage is intimate.
Top notes are Madagascar Vanilla, Plum, Cinnamon, Apple and Black Currant; middle notes are Jasmine Sambac and Thyme; base notes are Woodsy Notes, Sandalwood, Cedar and Olive Tree. Christmas in a bottle🤌✨
Have a lovely day and feel free tell me your perfume of the day!

ANOTHER ONE: never use body mist as just a regular perfume its not meant for that you're meant to literally soak your self in it. those tiktoks you see of the girls going like pst pst pst pst pst pst pst pst pst pst pst pst pst pst pst pst they had a point! heres the tip: use a lotion that either matches the fragrance of the mist, compliments it, or an unscented lotion. before it's fully absorbed into your skin like while it's still wet take the body mist and spray all over the lotioned area and leave it alone. it will last MUCH longer. Vaseline and mineral oil (like baby oil) are good for elongating the lifespan of your fragrances as well
Tumblr media
I’m gonna be honest I always thought that spraying it a ton would overdo it. I’ve had the same bottle for like 2 years so maybe that’s why it’s lasted so long 😂
I’ve been thinking of getting the perfume version of that scent tbh. You seem to know a lot about scents though so would that even be worth it? Or should I just stick to the body mist? 🤔 We’re getting down to business today
