Sarah Dessen Merch
In 2017 Penguin Teen created totes for the summer launch of Once and For All.
Pastel pink with the famous “Don’t think or judge. Just Listen.” line from, well, Just Listen, these double-sided bags were distributed at Book Con, YALL Fest, and bookstores.
Some gave them away for free, others with the purchase of any Sarah Dessen book, others per copy of Once and For All, etc.
Penguin Teen even hosted online giveaways of the Sarah Dessen quote tote along with similar ones in different colors with lines from other Penguin Teen authors and their books.
Tumblr media
According to the sweepstakes the bags are valued at $15, but they were never sold online for mass distribution as far as I could find.
What I did find was an eBay listing with a less than $9 price tag and $3.99 shipping (taxes to be added at checkout).
Tumblr media
^^ That is the full tote. The sides have just been folded.
(Image sources: x x x x)
A few weeks after I posted this, Sarah shared an IG story where she used the tote bag.

My Review:
This was such an incredibly good follow-up to the Bone Spindle. I loved it!
I love love love these characters and this world. They're all so multi-faceted and intriguing. I can't wait for the next book. I especially love how unpredictable I find it. I've read so many YA fantasy novels over the years and this one never quite reveals what I expect it to with each turn of the page. As is the way of second books in trilogies, the entire story feels like a relentless headlong rush, and at the same time a carefully balanced push-and-pull of wins and losses. Not a stalemate, exactly, but never with a clear winner either.
My absolute favorite part, hands down, is when they form a small band of adventurers and treasure-hunters. First it was Fi and Shane, then they picked up Red and Briar, and now they've reeled in Perrin as well. And there is such warmth and camaraderie between them -- and they all seem a lot happier out in the elements, fighting for their lives and searching for treasure and hatching plans. I never trusted the golden city of Everlynd, and I find I like the story much better once they leave it behind.
I'm not sure what I think of the Paper Witch either. He has his own secrets, and he holds them closer than the others do. He's more enigmatic and I'm never sure what he'll do. The others' motivations are easier to read.
I love how we get a glimpse into the founding of Andar, with the history of Aurora and the Butterfly Witch and the Spindle Witch! I hope we get to discover a lot more about this later because I find it fascinating.
The ending came out of nowhere and wasn't anything like what I predicted and at the same time I can't imagine it going any other way. It, like the rest of the storytelling, feels right and perfectly placed and thought-out.
I care about these characters so much: Fi and Shane and Briar and Red. Perrin, too, though I don't know him that well yet. I'm not sure I trust him yet - his motivations have been too unclear to me, but I like him quite a lot. I like all of them and I feel almost like a part of their group. Which is probably why the plot was able to take me so off-guard - I'm in the thick of it with the rest of them.
This (and the Bone Spindle) are definitely going on my favorite books of the year list.
*Thanks to Colored Pages Blog Tours, Penguin Teen, and NetGalley for providing an early copy for review.
Favorite Quotes:
Fi looked disappointed. But Shane wasn’t surprised. The kind of person who crawled around in the bowels of Witch mines prying out rubies with ominous names was just asking to go missing.
---
Ivan must have mounted up after she lost track of him, fast enough on horseback to get out of the way of the mudslide. Or he’s come back from the dead to get revenge, Shane thought. She wouldn’t put it past him.
---
“Just cut it all off,” Shane insisted. She was looking a little ragged around the edges and a dark bruise stood out on her cheekbone, but she was in high spirits. “With what, your ax?” Fi asked, arching an eyebrow. “Because I can guarantee that haircut would strike fear into the hearts of your enemeis—and your friends.”
---
“No,” Perrin said with a smile. “The magic is locked tightly inside it. It’s perfectly safe. Well, mostly safe.” He gave it a mistrustful look. “Probably safe. You know, on second thought, I’m just going to put this away.”
---
“I didn’t even know you could burn soup,” he admitted. “Typical prince. You can burn anything—I would know,” Shane assured him. “But most of it’s edible anyway.”
---
Her fingers fumbled for something to hold on to—and then her hand found Briar’s, squeezing it tight, and something swept through him, such a big warm feeling it had to be magic.

Nightbirds by Kate J. Armstrong My rating: 5 of 5 stars Thank you to Penguin Teen and those that put together the YA Soiree at YallFest 2022 for this stunner of a book! (spoilers below)
I sort of had to straight up message Kate J. Armstrong over instagram to tell her how much I was loving this book at just 25% of the way through and how it was inspiring me to get back to my writing. This book screams everything I needed for the moment in my reading adventures and I don't even know if I can explain why. There was one or two moments where I was a little iffy or unsure, but then relatively quickly the book fixed that for me and I loved it all over again. The descriptions were fabulous, and I loved the connections between Matilde, AEsa, and Sayer. I also really appreciated how the twist of their being a fourth of them and who it was was pulled off and the varying reactions and not accepting each other as sisters right away but instead out of necessity, working together to save lives. I absolutely loved the idea of the underground tunnels and more women with extraordinary magic, and those were other moments with enchanting and spellbinding descriptions that I absolutely had to take pictures to remember the pages since I didn't want to put the book down to write them down. Nothing really ever felt info dump-y or without reason, and I really loved seeing Sayer reflect on not noticing Fen when she thought she was, and I love the inclusion of Sayer and Fen's relationship as well! So many fun and shocking twists and turns throughout and such exquisite and atmospheric writing I don't even know how to compose myself knowing most people won't get to even touch this book for another three months. I really wanted to try to keep this as spoiler free as possible but clearly that's not happening - so in Nightbirds fashion: "dash it all..." "One girl holds out a handful of coins. They're copper naves, worth very little. They start to soften and melt into liquid pools. Another scoops a handful of water out of a bowl she brought with her. It should run through her fingers, but instead it takes the shape of a rabbit and hops across the floor, landing in Aesa's lap. When she goes to touch it, it twitches its nose. Aesa lets out a startled laugh. The green fire girl shows them a flame that seems to wrap around her arm, changing color from green to black to purple, a symphony of color..." "Slowly, she peels away her eyepatch. Sayer's breath catches in her throat. She's spent years wondering what's under it: a wicked scar, an empty hole, a glass orb. But it's an eye, green as leaves, shockingly vivid. A riotous color that doesn't match the caramel brown of the other. Eudeans have a name for such eyes: 'spring stained . A mark that someone has been touched by the Wellspring." View all my reviews

NEW GRAPHIC NOVEL COVER REVEAL!
So excited to let you all know about this baddie! A companion story to COVEN, written by the phenomenal Jennifer Dugan, also with Penguin Teen! August 27, 2024
AH-OOO 🐺 🐺 🐺
Cover design by Suki Boynton, illo by yours truly.
Le blurb droppeth 👇
Tessa feels like she doesn’t fit in anywhere. Not at school, where she can’t figure out how to confess the feelings she has for her friend Maddie. And definitely not at home, where the other werewolves in her family make her feel like an outcast because she can’t even shift into her full wolf form yet. Sometimes she thinks her whole life would be easier if she wasn’t a werewolf at all.
When word gets out that a group of werewolf hunters has infiltrated her pack’s territory and that they’ve developed a cure that can make werewolves human, Tessa thinks she’s found the answer to her problems. But when she discovers there might be more to the hunters’ plans than anyone knows, it’s up to Tessa to put herself on the line to protect the lives of those she loves most. And the only way to save them is to embrace the wolf inside her that is howling to get out.

ARC Review: A Scatter of Light by Malinda Lo
Tumblr media
Order
Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: October 4, 2022
Synopsis:
Award-winning author Malinda Lo returns to the Bay Area with another masterful coming-of-queer-age story, this time set against the backdrop of the first major Supreme Court decisions legalizing gay marriage. And almost sixty years after the end of Last Night at the Telegraph Club, Lo's new novel also offers a glimpse into Lily and Kath's lives since 1955. Aria Tang West was looking forward to a summer on Martha's Vineyard with her best friends--one last round of sand and sun before college. But after a graduation party goes wrong, Aria's parents exile her to California to stay with her grandmother, artist Joan West.Aria expects boredom, but what she finds is Steph Nichols, her grandmother's gardener. Soon, Aria is second-guessing who she is and what she wants to be, and a summer that once seemed lost becomes unforgettable--for Aria, her family, and the working-class queer community Steph introduces her to. It's the kind of summer that changes a life forever.
My Rating: ★★★★★
*My Review below the cut
My Review:
This book was emotionally devastating. That's the best word I can think of to describe it. I turned the last page and read the author's note through my tears, and then I ugly cried for a while. It's poignant and nostalgic and gorgeously written so that you feel everything Aria feels and live breathlessly in the moment with her. Every time I opened the book I was sucked in and forgot about everything else.
Malinda Lo is exceptionally good at capturing a moment in time, especially a moment where the character is right on the cusp of something. I don't remember Last Night at the Telegraph Club being quite so devastating, but I think part of that is my own emotional resonance with this story.
For most of the book, it's like she captured one perfect golden late-summer Northern California afternoon. The kind the stretches on and on, where the light showers everything in gold and you could believe that the moment could last forever. It meshes so well with that last endless summer between high school and college, when you're just beginning to discover yourself.
Aria is on the cusp of adulthood, the cusp of realization that she's maybe not as straight as she once thought. Her crush on Steph simmers just beneath the surface, warring with the impossibility of it all and the electric novelty of her newfound queerness opens up a previously unseen world to her.
At the same time she's having her ideas of her grandmother, her parents, her friends, and her past reshaped as she grows out of her childhood assumptions about them.
The ending circles back to the beginning in a wholly satisfying way that makes everything seem more profound and gives every moment, every gesture weight and meaning.
I love the exploration of time and memories and grief and art, and how they interconnect and weave together. The characters leap off the page, so full of life and well-rounded are they, and I felt them tugging at my heart more insistently than many.
This is a book that everyone should read and that I will probably never read again, because I don't think it would have the same breathless impact the second time through and I'm not sure my heart could take it.
The cover is stunning and complements the story SO well. The cover artist captured the essence of the story perfectly.
*Thanks to Bookishfirst and Penguin Teen for providing an ARC for review.
