'Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy has signed on to star in and produce a new Netflix movie, Steve.
The actor will play the role of the headteacher in the upcoming film, an adapted version of the 2023 novel Shy by author Max Porter.
Netflix has green-lit the project from Murphy's new production company Big Things Films, founded with longtime collaborator Alan Moloney. Deadline reports the movie will be shared globally on the streaming service, with filming set to begin this spring.
Steve will follow 24 hours in the life of the eponymous headteacher (Murphy), who heads up a last-chance school for troubled boys. Audiences will see the school head's mental health tested as he struggles to keep his students in line.
The screenplay, also written by Porter, differs slightly from his novel, with Shy's original protagonist being a 16-year-old student of the same name recalling one night at the school.
"The same events happen, we're just looking at them through a different lens," said Murphy of the change.
The Peaky Blinders star admitted he's a long-time fan of Porter's writing and his latest work Shy was no exception.
"It's something I've always chased down in writing — is something that has an actual visceral effect on you, an emotional effect," said Murphy.
"Max gave me that book in a proof edition before he finished it, and again it just broke my heart. They're the sorts of things I love as a reader and as a performer, so I really wanted to do something with him."
The actor has previously worked with Porter on the 2021 short film All of This Unreal Time and a stage adaptation of the novel Grief is the Thing with Feathers.
Steve will also reunite Murphy with director Tim Mielants. The two worked together on Peaky Blinders season three and the upcoming film Small Things Like These, which will debut at this year's Berlinale on opening night (February 15).'

ok wait here's another idea lol: so how about being the peaky blinders character's fave author?
imagine being ada, finn, and tommy's fave author
you being one of the first authors finn has ever read from, he heavily related to a lot of your main characters, he's shipped a lot of characters too (whatever shipping was called back then) and also tried to make fan work/writing (aka fanfiction) but stopped cus he thought his writing was crap.
he started reading your stories when he was like 13 and coincidentally, those were the first few works you published, and you only started writing short stories that centered around your fictional universe. he was obsessed, he just couldn't get enough of your characters😭 everytime you would have something published he would go to the store and ask for money to buy them immediately. he really admired you; and you were basically polly's hero (in terms of gratefulness). she noticed how finn suddenly took an interest in books, language, grammar, all that (lol he was trying to get good at writing so he could make fan work and finally do your stories some justice, im talking about his teenage years btw, like 13-16) and she was curious in what sparked this sudden interest, maybe he was trying to impress a girl or something? she talked to him, and Finn talked about these stories he was reading and how he had been wanting to create stories of his own recently. polly was in a good mood for the rest of the week. she thanked whoever was up there for leading finn to this author he was talking about. when people would notice, she would just shrug and give a smile. finally, finn had someone else to admire other than his big brothers. finally, finn had somehing else he wanted to do with his life other than join the peaky blinders.
currently he's not as into the idea as he was when he was younger but he was still into your works.
idk about this au, cus it isnt exactly a romantic finn x reader? but it is a finn x reader in terms of like, pairing yk? mentor x student found family type stories. i also dont know how finn would turn out in this au, whether he'd turn out to be an author just like y/n or lose interest in writing or something cus i just thought of a plotline for this au
--- what if finn loses interest in writing over the years and also stops keeping up with y/n's stories. the same thing happens to y/n, and although at one point, their stories were popular, only a few ppl only read their stories. y/n uses writing as their fulltime job and so writing wasnt enough to support them anymore. they had to get another job and stop publishing.
one day, finn sees a book by his once favorite author being read by a kid (13 years old, like the age he was when he started reading) and he asks the kid where they bought the book. he thought it would be good to check out the author again, just for nostalgia's sake yk? but the kid says it was the last one sold in bookstores, cus the author retired --- thats all i have for it😭

I swear that man serves every minute of that film! My top three would have to be: The Black Lace shirt and White Squirrel pants (The Ferris Wheel look), The Leather Jumpsuit (68 Special), and The Burgundy Vegas Suit.

I forgot this the first time lol. The whole 68 special, but really the scene we're Colonel and Elvis are in the trailer.

three ships: My ships (and I use the term loosely because I am not a fan of the diehard shipping culture) are entirely inadvertent. They get under my skin until they are all I can think about, most usually when one of them is dead. Three at the minute are:
Tommy and Grace, Peaky Blinders - Quelle Surprise! Honestly, I'm like Joey in Friends with Titanic, I can't talk about these two without getting emotional. Their ending will forever make me angry.
Oliver and Connie, Lady Chatterley's Lover - the remake still has me in a chokehold.
My all-time iconic ship, Laurie and Amy from Little Women. I have loved them since watching the 1949 film when I was little and that love only grew with the recent remake. Timothee Chalamet and Florence Pugh, what is there not to love?
first ever ship: My first EVER ship was entirely inappropriate. My Mum did not understand that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was extremely inappropriate for a four year old and I used to watch it on a Thursday night on channel 4, with my big sister. I swear I should have been in bed! But I started on S5 and LOVED Buffy and Riley with all of my little heart. I sobbed like my pet rabbit had died when she did not reach the helicopter. That being said, being an adult, Angel and Buffy forever break my heart and Riley gives me the ick.
last song: Songs really help me write and at the moment I cannot stop listening to Medicine by Daughter. If I was a video editor I would make an edit of solely Grace Burgess to that song because bestie was failed by EVERYONE in her life. Also, not the question but not PIMP by 50 Cent is my all time favourite song for reasons I cannot articulate. It just sounds like Dopamine.
last movie: I started watching The Pale Blue Eye with Harry Melling and am saving the second half for when my partner goes back to work after his break because he didn't enjoy it as much as I do and it kills my vibe! Recently I have also watched some INCREDIBLE films Lady Chatterley's Lover, All Quiet on the Western Front and the Knives Out films.
currently reading: I have just finished my degree and I cannot look at another book for the time being but my most recent and enjoyable book was Sons and Lovers by D H Lawrence or The Gathering by Anne Enright.
currently watching: I am attempting to rewatch Wednesday. I didn't get the hype AT ALL and I really wanted to. I am also rewatching the Alienist. I will be restarting Peaky Blinders soon because I need to dissect Series 3 to carry on with the fic. The things I do for you guys.
currently consuming: I have just finished my breakfast at lunch time and I had. Avocado on toast with bacon and a poached egg.
currently craving: Fun fact, I have been a vegan for the past seven years but I also have a very complex health condition (utterly irrelevant but have the background anyway) that my diet was exacerbating. I have recently gone back to eating 'normally' and what a whirlwind. I cannot stop eating sausages and I eat them for at least one meal a day, I wish I was joking, I am having them for tea or chicken fuck me, how good is chicken?!
