“Hermit of Caribou Lake Comes Out Once a Year,” Kingston Whig-Standard. January 19, 1933. Page 1. ---- Joseph Rossel, Frenchman, Only White Man Living in District Year Round — Collects Mail and Supplies and Returns to His Isolated Home in North Ontario --- WAKO, Ont. Jan. 19 — The Hermit of Big Caribou Lake is due "out" almost any time now. Just about once a year, Joseph Rossel, Old Country Frenchman, makes his way to the distant railway, collects his mail and supplies, and without loss of a day, returns to his isolated home on the Big Caribou. He is the only white man who lives in the district the year round.
Rossel comes of sturdy peasant stock. He was a baker In Paris originally, but came to Canada and went west. He didn't like the prairies and came to the Northern Ontario bush.
He has been there for twenty-five years, a stockily-built man, middle-aged with a rosy chock and steely blue eye as bright as his rifle barrel.
He "holds truck" with no one, owes no man a dime, cares not a hoot for the world wars. Banks, nations, kings may fall but he stands firm on the few acres he has cleared. Seeking solitude wishing no one near him — not even Indian who are afraid of him— his life suggests complete self-sufficiency.
Why does he live like that? "It suits me" is all he answers. His sandy loam grows everything he needs from the seeds he produces and with which he experiments every year. Moose, deer, fish, are at his door.
“A man need not starve in this country if he know how," said Rossel.

When Knocking On Wood Is The Last Chance
I remember my Grandma Puffer’s advice for when knocking on wood is the last chance to overcome a negative possibility. But she was superstitious, and so was her daughter Beulah, my Mom. I always tried to avoid becoming superstitious, but I remember one incident that suggested that my Grandma’s advice rang true. When I was pre-teen, I had a large wart on my knee that was a constant…

10/04/22 - Parry Sound, ON - BURSTING WITH COLOR - Got a little bit turned around on our walk this morning and ended up taking a much longer route back to the Airstream Hilton han intended. The good news was that the longer route took us through a hilly wooded area bursting with displays of fall colors. Glad we’re this far north at precisely the right time to see the fall colors. Hope we continue to see similar displays as we make our way south back to the U.S.

How many women are assaulted while TRAs insist this never happens?
A woman was allegedly raped by a sex offender at a women’s shelter in Ontario, Canada after the predator identified as transgender in order to gain access to the facility.
Shane Jacob Green, 25, was arrested on August 24 by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). At the time, the OPP issued a notice stating Green had been charged with two counts of sexual assault, four counts of failing to comply with a probation order, and one count of failing to comply with a release order.
But new details have emerged through the Toronto Sunrevealing that Green’s crimes occurred while he was staying in a women’s emergency shelter in Parry Sound.
Green is well known to police and has multiple prior offenses — including a conviction for having sexually assaulted a woman in 2018. Green was handed 114 days in prison for the crime, and was made to provide DNA in order to catalogue him in the national offenders registry.
According to the Sun, Green, who is homeless, had approached the Parry Sound shelter on August 22 and declared he was a woman in order to get a place to stay. While in the home, Green had allegedly been making sexually inappropriate comments to staff and residents, his behavior culminating in a sexual assault that occurred just two days later. He was arrested on August 24, the day of the assault, and is currently at Parry Sound Jail awaiting trial.
At the time of his arrest, Green was on probation. But this was not the first time he’d committed a crime while under release conditions.
In 2019, after being released from jail for the 2018 assault, Green was arrested in Welland, Ontario, for stalking and harassing two young girls who had been in a Tim Horton’s coffee shop.
The teens had noticed Green leering at them through the window of the restaurant and became uncomfortable. They left the Tim Horton’s out of fear and went to a nearby mall, but Green pursued them. When the girls noticed Green had continued to follow them, they fled into a store for safety.
After a period of time and the apparent disappearance of Green, the girls went back to the Tim Horton’s, only to have Green return and sit directly behind them. Green had a loaded BB gun on him at the time, a weapon that was visible to the girls as it was tucked in his waistband. Police were called and Green was taken into custody.
Prior to the August 22 attack, Green had allegedly attempted to access other shelters in the area, going so far as to claim he had a child to do so. He had reportedly been flagged by the shelter system in Strathroy due to his manipulative nature.
According to the Sun, Green was known for leveraging his knowledge of gender self-identification policies both with police and women’s resource centers. Green sometimes uses the name “Stephanie” when claiming to be transgender. Staff at the women’s shelter where the rape allegedly occurred may have been too afraid to turn Green away due to the risk of running afoul of Canada’s notoriously pro-trans human rights law.
In June, Reduxx reported that a Canadian woman had been evicted from a transitional house in British Columbia after raising concerns about gender self-identification policy.
The woman, who spoke exclusively to Reduxx under the condition of anonymity, described multiple disturbing incidents that had occurred within the residence while she stayed there, including having been exposed to a trans-identified male posing naked outside of her bedroom.
After raising concerns with shelter staff, the woman, who had been there in order to escape domestic violence, was told she was “transphobic” and had to find a new place to stay.
By Jennifer Seiland Jennifer is a founding member of the Reduxx team, writing with a focus on crimes against women and sex-based rights rights advocacy. She is located in the American south where she is a passionate animal welfare advocate and avid coffee drinker.

Last night’s election result is a nightmare for most of us and I’m sure nobody is interested in dwelling on that, but there are a few specific things I wanted to talk about, both good and bad.
Turnout
As it stands, Elections Ontario has the turnout count pegged at 43%. The ridings with the highest turnout are Huron—Bruce with 54%, and then both Niagara West and Parry Sound—Muskoka with 53%. The ridings with the lowest turnout were Kiiwetinoong with 28% (only 92% of results are in), Humber River—Black Creek with 32%, and Windsor West with 33%.
It’s impossible to gauge how many voters were discouraged from voting by polls that consistently showed the PCs with a strong advantage. We also don’t know how many people didn’t vote due to Covid-19 infection or a lack of easy access to a nearby polling station. All parties were handed a major setback yesterday when a tech issue prevented them from downloading lists of which voters had already cast a ballot and which hadn’t yet, so their ability to work strategically yesterday was limited. Regardless, 43% is a pathetic turnout rate.
It’s worth noting that the Green Party campaigned relentlessly in Parry Sound—Muskoka because, with no Liberal candidate running, they had a good chance of winning that seat. A lot of effort was made to engage with voters and win their support, both from the Greens and the incumbent PCs. Niagara West is Sam Oosterhoff’s riding, where he can mobilize a large group of supporters from his church to canvass and help people vote. Running an energetic campaign is a candidate’s job, but for the rest of us, volunteering and helping to get people to a polling station really does help. Persuading friends and family to vote helps. We’re at a disadvantage in a first past the post electoral system, so there’s zero room for apathy.
Andrea Horwath and the NDP
After four elections as leader, Andrea Horwath read the room and stepped down after running a low-energy and uninspiring campaign. In Brampton, deputy party leader Sara Singh lost her seat, as did Gurratan Singh. The PCs secured several union endorsements over the traditionally more labour-friendly NDP. The Liberals will get more attention for their trainwreck of an election, but yesterday was awful for the NDP.
With Horwath quitting, the NDP’s other deputy leader, John Vanthof, may be interested in running for the party leadership. Joel Harden and Marit Stiles are other potential contenders.
Notable losers
New Blue MPP Belinda Karahalios and New Blue leader Jim Karahalios both lost badly in Cambridge and Kitchener—Conestoga respectively. Derek Sloan also lost by a huge margin. The former Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders lost in Kathleen Wynne’s old riding.
The Liberals took the riding of Kingston and the Islands from the NDP, beating Mary Rita Holland, the former president of Ontario’s NDP. Sandeep Singh, who was controversially chosen as the NDP candidate in Brampton North over the incumbent, Kevin Yarde, also lost.
Steven Del Duca has stepped down after failing to secure party status for the Liberals or win in Vaughan—Woodbridge. After flipping from the PCs to the Liberals in 2020, MPP Amanda Simard lost her seat and two of the most well-known Liberal newbie candidates, nurse Tyler Watt and vaccination advocate Jill Promoli, also lost.
There’s not much for the PCs to be disappointed about, but their candidate in Haldimand—Norfolk lost to an independent. Former seven-term PC MPP Toby Barrett chose not to run in this election, but he endorsed his assistant Bobbi Ann Brady who was running as an independent.
Notable winners
After narrowly losing in 2018, Chandra Pasma unexpectedly flipped Ottawa West—Nepean to the NDP. With the NDP’s only other flip, Lise Vaugeois won in Thunder Bay—Superior North.
The biggest winners are obviously the PCs. It’s rare to win a comfortable majority and then increase that majority in the next election. Opposition to Doug Ford and the PCs over the last four years has been ineffective, and we need a hard reset in terms of organization. Signing petitions, marching to Queen’s Park, and literally begging Lisa MacLeod for help has made no material difference on PC policy. I hope that the NDP will fix their deep-seated problems and set the party on a better path, but mostly I hope that people who are upset today will feel motivated to help their neighbours who will be hit hardest by four more years of PC cuts and also to join a group organizing for material and achievable wins.

could they be in Canada ... Rutger has a cottage in Parry Sound (I think?) AA to Parry Sound is prob 6h, but the traffic on the 400 on a Friday is probably rough since Parry Sound is like THE ontario cottage area and there's like one highway in that direction from Toronto
that lake could be literally anywhere, but in my heart it’s the hughes house

"PLAN HOUSE CANVASS TO AID WAR WORKERS," Toronto Star. October 6, 1942. Page 30. ---- Armies of Women Volunteers Will Ask Citizens to Share Homes --- ALL OVER CANADA ---- Special to The Star Ottawa, Oct. 6 - In more than 40 cities and towns across Canada in which war industries are located or are nearby, armies of women volunteers will shortly set out to appraise the shortage of housing and induce people with available space to share their homes. (Mrs. Graham Boyce. of the Women's Voluntary Services Centre, Queen St. E., Toronto, announced in a letter to Mayor Conboy today, that members of the organization are conducting a voluntary housing canvass throughout the city.) "Almost immediately," the wartime prices and trade board announced today, the job will be launched in Kingston, Welland and Windsor. Similar campaigns will follow in Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, St. Catharines, Barrie, Parry Sound. London. Brockville, Belleville, Trenton, Peterboro, Cornwall, Sarnia and St. Thomas.
Outside Ontario, the work of appraisal will also be carried out in Halifax. Prince Rupert, Vancouver, Edmonton and numerous other centres. To Open Registries In some cities and towns, central registries will be established where people may voluntarily register the housing space they have available. In others, a house-to-house canvass will be instituted to find out exactly what additional accommodation can be produced and convince people they should rent all unused space in their homes. If this campaign for voluntary co-operation does not succeed, a system of rationing housing facilities will be worked out, the board declared.
The whole plan and the order in which the appraisal should take place in the various centres throughout the country is being completed by the board in consultation with Russell Smart, newly named housing administrator. The actual survey, however, under the direction of Miss Byrne Hope Saunders, director of consumer services of the board, will be made by the regional advisory committees which is conducting the rationing canvass. In the Toronto district, the head of the regional committee is Mrs. Ryland H. New, of Oakville. Many Eager to Help "Returns so far," said Mrs. Graham Boyce, "show accommodation for family units is not readily available, but many homes are ready and eager to take single war workers. We are asking every house-holder to co-operate to the full with the canvass. No more valuable service could be rendered to this country than if householders without accommodation to spare should offer rooms to soldiers' dependents or war workers."

Ringing in the New Year Part 5
This is a short story set at Christmas after Assassins! Accidental Matchmakers. If you haven't read that yet, you can find it at all major book retailers, including Chapters Indigo.
Tumblr media
Friday the 27th of December, 2002 - Parry Sound, Ontario
"Did you bring the ring with you? What does it look like?"
"It was my mother's," he said again. He listened, and finding complete silence, he fashioned shadow into a delicate ring. "It looks like this, with an emerald." He twisted it in front of her eyes before letting it vanish back into nothing.
Lilah looked impressed, although he wasn't sure if it was for the ring or the display of shadow manipulation.
Jason finished his sandwich and drained his glass of milk. "I'm actually feeling a little more tired now," he said, surprised. He got up and took his dishes to the sink. "Maybe I just needed to talk. Thanks."
"That's what mothers are for." Lilah stood as well, putting her bowl with the leftover fruit in the fridge. She touched his arm lightly. "I would never try to replace your mother, but I hope you will think of me as a mother figure in your life."
"I already do," he admitted. He shook water off his hands and wiped them on the hand towel hanging off the oven. "Sleep well."
They crept up the stairs together, Jason feeling weird about using the shadows and leaving Lilah at the bottom. He cringed at every creak, but nobody else poked their heads out of their rooms, so he assumed they weren't as loud as they felt.
Lilah continued up the next set of stairs and he slipped back into Kennedy's room, closing the door behind him. She had rolled onto her stomach and was splayed out across the entire bed. Jason huffed a laugh as he stripped. With a practised movement, he rolled his girlfriend just far enough to slip in behind her, spooning up against her warm body.
She hummed sleepily and wrapped her fingers around his arm as he draped it over her.
He yawned, gave her a gentle squeeze, dropped a kiss on the back of her head, and allowed himself to drift off to sleep.
