Intertwined Destinies
Chapter 11
Fandom: Avatar the Last Airbender
Summary: Music night washes over Iroh. The crew’s attention on each other means no one notices their allegedly ill prince slipping over the side of the Wani and onto the dock.
Zuko, as The Blue Spirit, is leaving to meet another White Lotus Bud agent to exchange information on the Earth Armies for similar details on Fire Nation troops.
The White Lotus Buds are more successful than Iroh expected. Sometimes he thinks the war would end in days if they left the operatives in charge.
The White Lotus Buds were inspired by Zuko himself. It wasn’t difficult to connect The Blue Spirit’s earlier escapades with Zuko. Not once one realized there were connections to make.
Iroh does not know when the sneaking began, though he has his suspicions. Ten year old princes don’t go missing for days on end easily. And there’s the ambiguity surrounding Azulon’s death and Ursa’s sudden flight. When it started doesn’t truly matter when Zuko will not speak of it.
Shaking off his wandering curiosity, Iroh lets himself be drawn into the singing of an old sea shanty. It helps keep an old man awake, which he will need if he wants to be alert for his nephew’s return later that night.

The note had given some really good advice on how to get out. Even if it was clearly written by someone who was entirely deranged. How was Sokka supposed to know that ‘turn left at the crow dog's hoof’ had to do with a child’s drawing, but ‘turn right at maple tree’ actually meant maple tree street and not right at the maple tree.
When he’d successfully followed it to the rendezvous point it’d been Bumi waiting at the table. They were in a run-down tea house on the outskirts of the city. Couldn’t they have just met in the Palace? They were literally both there? He didn’t get it. Was this another test?

(sidenote: please check out the design @becasart made of painted lady!katara bc it’s gorgeous)
so i outlined my vision of the love square a bit already here, but there’s so many places it could GO, and i personally am a slut for the square shifting (see: my desire to see marinette slowly falling for chat while adrien is falling for marinette and suddenly the script is flipped), and it’s beautiful because you have four different relationship arcs, right??? zutara and paintedblue are both one-sided, with lots of pining, but vastly different dynamics. you get the angst and antagonism of katara hating zuko while he’s desperate to prove himself to her--but has no idea how, because keeping up his facade as the crown prince is the only thing that might protect him from his father’s wrath (and yeah, he still has the scar--the common story is that it was a training accident; no one knows the truth, except zuko, his sister, his uncle, and ozai), which is why he accepted the deal with the blue spirit in the first place, so that he had a means of protecting his people. and then you have the painted lady in love with the blue spirit, but she knows his heart lies elsewhere and every time they’re fighting soldiers back to back, or saving people, working together--there will be moments where she just melts, where their eyes meet and she thinks maybe he feels the same, but then reality sets back in, he looks away, pulls his hand back, and she desperately fights back her own jealousy because above all else she wants him to be happy, even if it’s not her.
and then you have blutara, which is basically ladrien--he loves katara, and she loves him, but they both think it’s unrequited; zuko knows that she hates the real him, because he hasn’t realized yet that his identity as blue is the real him, in every way that matters. he can never bring himself to take advantage of the fact that she doesn’t know his real identity, no matter how much he wants to--how desperately he wants to kiss her, spin her until she laughs, until the fire in her eyes smolder to embers with a heat that is all for him. and for katara, she’s so intensely conflicted because she doesn’t believe it’s remotely possible that the person he loves is her. part if it is because she met zuko before she ever met blue in either form--so how could she be the one blue loves, when he hadn’t known her before she met him as the painted lady??? so then there’s the dramatic irony in them being in love with each other but convinced it’s unrequited.
AND THEN, WE COME TO THE HEART OF IT ALL--the painted lady and zuko, neither of them in love with the other (or so they think) but in a way this allows them to be even more real with each other. their truest selves, because there’s nothing for them to hide. no feelings--because of course there couldn’t be feelings, she hates him, it doesn’t matter how much her insides clenched unpleasantly when she thought he’d been hurt, he’s still the spirits-damned prince of the nation that had destroyed her people and overrun the world--and the painted lady just can’t compare to the fire that burns at katara’s center, no matter how often zuko thinks he sees flickers of it in the lady’s eyes, beneath that inscrutable mask of hers.
but that’s just at the start. because then things start to change.
the painted lady saves zuko’s life. again and again. somehow, he always manages to get himself in dangerous situations, and sometimes, she almost thinks there’s more to him than she gave him credit for. and the painted lady is always there when things go bad--when people need her, she’s the first to dive into danger to help them--when he can’t get away in time to transform, she’s there, pulling his ass out of the metaphorical (or sometimes literal) fire. and they get closer. they get trapped together, and they have to learn to work together to get out of whatever spirit-trap it is, they have to connect--and they start seeing the other pieces of each other’s puzzled souls. zuko’s compassion for his people peaks through his arrogant, princely facade, and katara can never keep her fire tamped down for long--and then there’s guilt, because how can they possibly be falling in love with each other when they already love other people?????
there’s like four or five different layers to this slow burn and i just. would love to sink my teeth into it dfkgjhdkfhgdfg

Ok, I don't know if Tumblr sent you my ask, because they told me there was a problem, so I'm writing it again, sorry for that. I loved The Blackfish and the Dragon. It was an amazing fic. I was always so thrilled when I saw an update, that was the best part of my days. Thank you so much, I really enjoyed it. Also, I'm curious to know if you have any Zutara fics recommendations, which one are your favorites?

These are some of my favorite Zutara fics. There are definitely others I’ve read and enjoyed (my bookmarks page on AO3 has a couple more), but I stuck to the ones I remember and feel like I can describe best, and which I don’t remember seeing on 500 other Zutara fic rec posts.
Modern Love by @grapefruittwostep (WIP) - I am OBSESSED with this fic. It’s basically a 1980s high school AU where Zuko becomes Katara’s bodyguard because she’s getting bullied and he’s a Tough Loner and so is Toph and Sokka and Suki are jocks and Mai is a Siouxsie Sioux lookalike and there is not a single detail about it I don’t love. Just. fuckin’ read it.
so let us melt, and make no noise (WIP), and show me things i cannot see (shine a little light on my soul), both by LittleLostStar/@iwritevictuuri The former is a really funky AU… it’s kind of hard to describe because information about it unfolds throughout the fic and there’s still at least One Big Secret that hasn’t been revealed. Basically Katara is a semi-mythological waterbender living in a desolate ice palace and Zuko arrives thinking he’s going to kill her (a la find-the-Avatar quest) but they become friends and maybe fall in love?? who knows. tis the mystery of WIPs. The latter is a fic wherein Katara and Zuko were high schools rivals who reunite after college trying to be smug and antagonistic only to go “oh no she’s/he’s hot” and then get it on. They’re both kind of shitty and I love them so much.
The Slow Path, by TazmainianDevil - no joke, I remembered reading this fic in like… 2007 maybe?? to the point where, when I got back into A:TLA last year I was like “I don’t remember the plot of The Slow Path at all but I know I need to reread it”–and then I found out that I ACTUALLY DID REMEMBER PARTS OF THE FIC. FROM A DECADE AGO. (it’s a Zutara/Taang/Sukka fic, there’s a scene where Toph asks Aang what stars are like, I’m not hugely invested in them as a pairing but gosh I just melt over it.) Aang disappeared for a bit to figure out Avatar Stuff and comes back to his friends dealing with an anti-bender movement. It’s good.
The Things We Hide, by Lykegenia - The South Pole surrenders to the Fire Nation, and Katara remains there as a political prisoner. This is probably my favorite “Aang wasn’t discovered at the canon time so everything is different” fic, although there are a few other things that change the political position of the Southern Water Tribe, too. It’s great. There’s lots of Katara being a very very good politician and some cute awkward mama’s boy Zuko and some Blutara/PaintedBlue shenanigans.
A Healthy Dose of Forgetfulness, by Hiniwalay (WIP) - This is a fun one! Zuko, Katara, and Sokka all wake up with amnesia, and of course they remember just enough for MAXIMUM SHENANIGANS. (Sokka doesn’t remember finding the Avatar at all, Zuko does but is pretty sure he’s supposed to be hunting him and his Water Tribe friends, Katara remembers becoming friends with Zuko but not ending the war and definitely not MARRYING HIM.) And there’s Granpakku. The premise may be crack-ish but the situations are treated with the mix of gravity and humor they deserve.
Divergence - this is an orphan work on AO3. it’s a Zuko-joins-the-gaang-in-S2 fic, under 5k but there’s some cute traveling scenes. I have a particular weakness for wander Zuko in Book 2 and this fic indulges that.
Salvage, by @muffinlance - this is technically not a Zutara rec because it’s a gen fic and Katara doesn’t, uh… appear… but COME ON. It’s a fic where Zuko falls overboard during a storm in season 1 and gets reluctantly adoptedheld for ransom by Hakoda and his crew. Is there ANYTHING Zutara fans love more than Dadkoda + Zuko and Fire Nation/Southern Water Tribe cultural misunderstandings????
