Talking to @redzephyrappreciationclub about the need for more Tendo and Mako content and how they’d probably have like tech jamming sessions while they worked on Lady Avenger
Then they had the brilliant idea of Mako proclaiming that Lady Avenger needs a sword and how it’d look cool and Tendo would, of course, say “can’t argue with that.” And thus this comic was born

Autism & Guillermo del Toro
While some light research of "Guillermo del Toro autism" doesn't get many results, other than complaints and praise for The Shape of Water, it is apparent that many of his characters are autistic.
Aurora || Cronos (1993)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aurora is near-mute, but has a lot of agency despite this. She isn't afraid to kill a bug or help Jesus defeat De la Guardia. In fact, she's the main heroine of our story, despite her silence. She shows intense feelings, especially of love for her grandfather, shown in scenes such as where she reaveals shes ripped the head off her beloved teddy bear to put the Cronos device inside. She's incredibly smart for her age and very capable, but I believe her (maybe not optional, but definitely not permanent) silence is vindictive of her autism. I cannot figure out what her special interest would be, though.
Chuy || Mimic (1997)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chuy is another one of Guillermo del Toro's strong children. Shown first playing spoons incredibly skillfully and crafting creatures out of wire, Chuy has unique interests. He can tell the exact type of shoe down to the size because of his grandfather, and he has the ability to perfectly mimic the Judas' cry. He's nearly silent but not always, and he seems unaware of the rules of the world, leaving his home and entering the subways seemingly unaware of the danger. Upon watching a man get sucked into a gutter, he barely reacts. One pivotal scene showing his autism would have to be when he's trapped in the elevator shaft and has a meltdown. He also speaks in a somewhat unique manner. His special interests are obviously playing spoons and shoes.
Ofelia || Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ofelia is yes another child character who shows a lot of agency, going against what practically everyone tells her to follow her own path. But she's also very bookish, obsessed with her fairytales so much she believes anything the fantastic tells her. She crawls through the mud and talks back to adults, keeping a somewhat quiet demeanor otherwise. I believe her special interest is fairtales.
Newt || Pacific Rim (2013)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not a child, but worth mentioning anyways, is Newt. He's obsessed with Kaiju, to the point of drifting with one multiple times (and eventually.. living with one?). He speaks fast and erratically, he knows every indexical fact about Kaiju, and he's obviously insanely smart. He's, however, balanced by his childlike wonder at everything. His love for kaiju is, of course, his special interest.
Tumblr media
Hope you enjoyed my analysis! I'm missing plenty of characters simply because I haven't seen his full repertoire yet! But as an autistic person, I love to find it in everything else!

PRELIMINARY EXTRADIMANSIONAL HORROR -- KAIJU TERROR TAKES PENCILED FORM.
PIC(S) INFO: Resolution at 1092x1167 -- Spotlight on preliminary sketch art/concept art for the Category II kaiju code-naned "Onibaba," artwork by Keith Thompson for the sci-fi/action/daukaiju blockbuster movie "Pacific Rim" (2013), written & directed by Guillermo Del Toro. Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros.
BIOLOGY: "Bearing a striking resemblance to a crustacean and a Japanese temple, Onibaba appears somewhat smaller than the rest of the Kaiju in height, but larger in terms of width.
This Kaiju possesses four large legs, along with two thick claws. Onibaba's claws are said to able to crush over 50,000 pounds per square inch. Two small, arm-like appendages reside in the Kaiju's thorax.
Onibaba also possesses a high crest above a large, symmetrical head that can withstand close range and energy based attacks. Onibaba is not openly hostile; despite the damage it caused the general area of Tokyo, it actively avoids combat with an enemy unless provoked. Even then, its attacks are primarily defensive and not offensive."
-- KAIJU BATTLE, "Creature Feature: Onibaba," published March 2016

Pacific Rim is the best movie ever made for the same reason Sif is the best boss in Dark Souls. It's not bcs of quality or craftmanship or whatever it's bcs when I hear "giant robots fighting giant monsters with the power of love" and "huge wolf with a big fucking sword" I am overcome with the urge to scream "HELL FUCKING YEAH" at the top of my lungs before headbutting a wall so hard I leave a dent in the plaster.

It feels like there's been this very particular subset of the Pacific Rim fandom who were into it specifically for how its central conceit blurs the line between intimacy and codependency, but felt constrained by the fundamental optimism of the source material – like no matter how fucked up they made it, there was something basic and structural embedded in it that meant it could never be fucked up enough.
And then Armored Core VI came along.

the main thing I’ve gathered from the Pacific Rim director’s commentary is that, even though a lot more of PacRim was done with CGI than I had realized, it still holds up almost 10 years later because of how intentional Guillermo Del Toro was with building in details, flaws, weathering and environmental factors, and, primarily, love and respect into every single model.
He helped animate every single creature and robot by hand on his tablet, he praised the animators for every single shot and talks about how brilliant they are, how hard they worked on every detail, he treats all of them like human beings, like geniuses, just as integral to the film as himself and the actors. The animators themselves talk about how intentional and detailed his ideas were, how helpful and insightful he was when he spoke to them about changes, when he came to them with new ideas.
There’s also a hell of a lot of practical effects woven in, which add to the believability, but the CGI holds up first and foremost because he saw it as an art form to be cultivated and loved just as fiercely as everything else, not a ‘wow’ effect to be slapped in for budget cuts.

Random thing in the jumble of my thoughts this week:
Pacific Rim fans out there, does anyone know which is Hermann’s “bad leg”? I thought it was his left cuz he seems to favor the cane in his right but then I think I’ve read fic where it’s his right. I’ve seen theories where he might have MS or something like it so it’s not one or the other…but I’m just super curious what y’all think or if anyone knows the official word on it?

I feel like Pacific Rim, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves are kind of a perfect trifecta of action movies. They’re not necessarily Oscar material but they’re all great at being the kind of thing they are trying to be, they’re all entertaining but not afraid of being genuinely emotional, and they’re all generally not hampered by dumb sexist action movie nonsense because their main female characters have their own arcs, are not designed for the male gaze, and the main M/F relationships are platonic. More things like this please!!
