Here’s a recent interview I did with @petermichaelbauer of @rewildportland on what it means to be “collapse-aware” and how it intersects with death work. I so deeply respect the work of Rewild Portland: their work around ancestral skills, the deeper understandings and co-mingling with “invasive species,” their collaborations with Indigenous land-tenders and native language speakers, and their deep resistance to how “rewilding” has become yet another gate-kept trademark for western white people to monetize and escape from the real work of staying with the trouble. I send my pre-teen to their tween kid year-long outdoor program, and it has been so transformative. Peter has taught me so much about how the dire straits we find ourselves in today didn’t start with the advent of capitalism, and we get INTO IT during this #podcast. Look, it’s weird out there. And it’s getting weirder. Weird like WYRD. Like a turning. Apocalypse is baked-in [while there’s no real light source in dreams, minds can’t exist without the sun], but it’s not the end of the world. I mean, the word means more will be revealed. And if your world has already ended - more than once! Well, perhaps you were made for these times. We were born along a cultural subduction zone and if you feel the plates shifting along the fault lines in your very body, I am here for it. If you suspect whiteness has infected us beyond the point of redemption, join me in the cartoon graveyard. If the list of what you aren’t is a thousand times longer than what you are, snuggle up, buttercup. I know this hollow zone. All of my clients have died. Working as I do with dying people and their kin, this is how it goes. So it seems like a good time to let folks know that I am available for in-person #deathdoula services in the Portland area, as well as online if that is a better fit. Background::: I was initiated into death work via my mother who was a registered hospice nurse and was also the director of a visiting nurses’ + hospice association in Vermont at the time of her death when she was 49, and died at home surrounded by co-workers, friends and family. Subsequently, I did informal end-of-life care with a few other people, and last year completed the hospice volunteer training at Legacy Emmanuel Hospital which means I can assist with transfers (wheelchair, bed, toilet, etc.) and am comfortable providing hands-on body comfort services such as gentle massage, mouth swabbing, bed turning, and feeding. Services::: • Friendly visits (homes or facilities) • Respite for families • Vigil presence • Grief processing • Acoustic music + sound healing (guitar, ukulele, voice) - this is especially nice during the holidays • Funeral support • Grief altar installation • Visual art from bereavement flower arrangements (pressed #kurbits, eco-printing, etc.) • Non-denominational and open/affirming to diverse belief systems • Speaking and acting in ways that do not pretend someone isn’t dying Rates::: My rates are sliding scale starting at zero dollars per hour. It seems to me that becoming death and grief literate is a big part of what is being asked of those of us living in a dying culture, amid climate disaster and ecocide, while the nature of things continues to become uncovered and revealed. In service to limits, to being faithful to endings, and to all that must pass away for the new world to be born, I offer myself in this capacity, in order to gain a greater capacity for what is at hand and what lies ahead.
