Originally this was a response to an ask that I took way, way too far, ha! This is meant to explore why his red-and-gray hair is so contentious... he has many reasons to feel poorly towards his family, and they culminate here in his first real act of rebellion.

Hi everyone

i realised I never posted this here - anyone who has been interested in the worldbuilding and hypertext storytelling I've been doing over at rezq.space may be interested in this excerpt from a longer form story I am working on.

The overall story broadly concerns Thom, a depressive young doglike guy trying to work and live in the dystopian hypercapitalist spacefaring future where gravity is rationed, the value of money pinballs unpredictably from second to second, and patent trolling causes shortages of basic staples. Originally a gig worker for a last-mile space courier based on what was once known as Earth, he becomes a deep space rescue worker by default when the entire business that he was contracting for is bought out and shut down by REZQ, a new breed of ruthlessly profiteering company. REZQ putatively provides recovery services to people whose spacecraft get into trouble in deep space, but they are more controlling, ruthless, and . Alone and untrained aboard the giant empty vessel Angel Fish, can Thom keep his job - and his mind?

This excerpt concerns a short bit of context and scene setting on Thom's home planet (we would know it as Earth, but its name changes according to who happens to be sponsoring it at that time). I'd be really keen for any feedback or thoughts on any element of this. I'd like to continue it but it's obviously early days, and it's always hard for original setting things to find an audience if they don't conform to things that are already wildly popular. Thank you!

What if I put out a setting supplement for my book (to learn about my book about growing up in your late 30s, being the product of a monkey's paw wish, and crazy wizard duels follow @gaywizardemporium) and then called it "System agnostic" but it's clearly meant to be run using Exalted

I just want everyone to know I'm a lazy fucker and not a linguist so I absolutely will not be making up a conlang for my setting.

Oh it has languages n shit but I'm not spelling out how they work. I will not be making an alphabet or syllabary or pictographs or anything like that. I ain't smashing together syllables and praying I'm not naming a place some variety of slur in Basque, and you don't have to either.

I take the real world/Pokémon/One Piece approach to place-names: Springfield. Cerulean City. Gecko Island. Take an animal, color, metal, gem, natural feature, whatever and then append what kind of place it is. You absolutely do not need to make up words to make a place seem real.

You can also name places after people, which lots of places are. That then can help you create an aspect of your world's history. Who lives in Kreig's Run? Who's Kreig? Is that a family name? Where does the run lead? Is it referring to a literal event in which Krieg delivered something important over a long distance or just a long strip of land?

Also, picking a theme using real words works too. Again this is the Pokémon approach. Maybe all your locales are named for colors and now naming places is easy! Scarlet Cliffs. Indigo City. Aubergine Fort.

This is of course advice for writing in English but I imagine it works in other languages.

Anyway don't stress yourself out thinking you have to make up fantasy words. You don't! Hope this helps. (no really I hope this helps)

Lucas was a talented truant during their school days. Quincy, more a middling performance stickler to the rules. They grew on each other over time. (Or more importantly, Quincy is of the few capable of tolerating Lucas's whims.)

I must save greater specifics since they are addressed in the game, BUT... it boils down to "they were both unpopular children who happened to be in the same place at the same time".
