Hello again! Please elaborate on why you don’t like Bram Stokers Dracula (1992) I love hearing people go off and I think I’ll agree with your conclusion since I don’t like it either haha
HI thanks for sending this as an ask!! Here's a very long, convoluted response. Warning: it is not proofread.
So, the main reason I don't like Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) is because of accuracy. Now, I am completely fine when a book-to-film adaptation isn't a perfect recreation of the book (frankly thats impossible imo) but MAN does this adaptation do the original book injustice. The romance between Dracula and Mina?? The plot line about Dracula's dead wife? Renfield originally working with Harker?? MINA ATTEMPTING TO SEDUCE VAN HELSING???? Really, most of the injustice is done to Mina as a character. Book!Mina is such a strong, well written character. She is integral to the plot and to the book's structure (we would not have had all of the letters, newspaper clippings, and diary entries without her). The book itself states this with how often the Dude Squad (I think I got that title from an Overly Sarcastic Productions video, im going to keep using it) directly tell Mina that they could not have defeated Dracula without her. She is resilient, smart, and stands up for herself. 1992!Mina is not this. James V. Hart, who wrote the screenplay, took everything that made Mina Mina and created a stereotypical damsel character. It's a shame because I strongly believe that Winona Ryder could play a killer, book-accurate Mina Harker.
Speaking of who plays the characters... the cast is really hit or miss for me personally. I do think Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins are good picks (especially based off of the book portrayals) and I remember liking Cary Elwes as Arthur Holmwood. Tom Waits as Renfield is a pretty inspired choice ngl.
But. Keanu. Don't get me wrong, I love Keanu Reeves. I think he is great in Bill and Ted's and John Wick. But that's why it confuses me as to why he was cast in this film. He can't do the accent, he shows no emotion, and it sounds like he is remembering his lines as he says them. In fact, my family and I quote his lines in this film as a joke all the time ("Is the castle far?"). None of his former roles at the time implied that he would be a good Jonathan either.
I can't remember much of Gary Oldman's performance, I just know I didn't like it lmao. He made Dracula too suave when he's really just a Creature.
Note: in looking up the cast I was reminded that Richard E. Grant plays Seward and as a fan of Saltburn (2023) that is just. hilarious to me.
I only went into this movie because I was told I would like it because the production design was pretty. Honestly? It's not. The film is poorly lit and the costumes are questionably accurate. The few shots I can remember are for the wrong reasons- such as that One Scene with Lucy in the cemetery. I won't get into it much more, it makes me extremely uncomfortable, but its another instance of Bram Stoker's Dracula taking away everything that made the female characters interesting.
Honestly? The best thing I can say about this movie is that it included Quincey. He's my favorite and he usually doesn't make it to screen adaptations. I'm happy you're here buddy.
I think what infuriates me is the title. Bram Stoker's Dracula implies that this adaptation takes a lot from the book. It's not just Dracula, it's Bram Stoker's Dracula. It's like saying that this adaptation is the most faithful. But... it's not. Bram Stoker's Dracula takes more of it's inspiration from old Universal films and previous Dracula adaptations than it does from the actual book. Thats okay! I'm all for new interpretations of old stories. But if you're a new interpretation that changes half of the characters and plot, don't market said interpretation with the original authors name.
This is not Bram Stoker's Dracula, it's Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula.
Which, even then, this is weak for Coppola. I'm not a huge fan of his work (I've seen The Godfather and Apocalypse Now) but I can understand and appreciate why he is as influential as he is. I think his films are well written and beautifully shot. He has great casts who elevate the writing and make their characters memorable. This film goes against all of that and that bothers me so much. It feels like a cheap imitation of Coppola's work.
Anyway- that sums up my thoughts on Bram Stoker's Dracula. I reallt enjoyed writing this, as someone who wants to be a film historian but doesn't actually get to do film-deep dives this was pretty refreshing haha. Good reminder that this is a film blog, not a podcast one.
Feel free to ask me more about movies, especially if you like Dracula! I am of the opinion that there is no good adaptation of Dracula... but I have ideas on how to fix that so...

Once the hatch was shut, the airlock started depressurization. The group crowded inside—Ryder, Jaal, Drack, Peebee, Liam, and Vetra—were crammed shoulder to shoulder. The fit was tight enough that Ryder’s chest rose and fell with a bit of a struggle. She double checked the oxygen levels in her armor: normal. So, just a touch of claustrophobia caused by one bulky krogan taking up a full third of the airlock, a tall turian taking up another quarter, a broad-shouldered human male, an even more broad-shouldered angaran male, an average-sized human female, and the thankfully small Peebee.
Vetra was the first to comment. “We’d be doing this in two groups if Peebee wasn’t a—what does Sara call you?—a peanut for an asari.”
“Being pint-sized has its advantages,” Peebee said, grinning as she peeked out the airlock’s inner hatch window into the vestibule beyond. “But don’t forget flexibility. We could probably fit the other two in here in a pinch. Keep an open mind. Wanna know what I heard? The—”

My favorite solo from each main character on glee (because why not)
SUE: Vogue. “WILL SCHUESTER I HATE YOU”
KURT: Rose’s Turn. Chris Colfer rarely got songs that highlighted ALL his vocal strengths. This song used everything. He had a strong head voice, an amazing mix, and he can EMOTE WITH EVERY INCH OF HIS LIFE. No wonder he got the Golden Globe.
QUINN: This Is A Man’s World. This scene is ridiculous, but out of context the song absolutely slaps. Diana can BELT and she deserved to do it more.
ARTIE: Stronger. Probably my favorite Britney song. Kevin ate. That is all.
PUCK: Only the Good Die Young. This song is so fun and I think Puck’s voice is very underrated. A good ol’ jam. Thank you for repping the Jewish community king ❤️
WILL: Sway. It’s a shame that we never talk about his voice because HOLY SHIT MATTHEW MORRISON IS INCREDIBLE. This man is so talented and we never acknowledge it because of Will Schuester’s shenanigans.
BLAINE: Somewhere Only We Know. You can hate Blaine all you want but you can’t deny the POWER of this song. The love in his eyes is sickening I am not okay right now
FINN: I’ve Gotta Be Me. Given the fact that Cory didn’t have any singing experience before, this song makes me so fucking happy because you can see how much he had grown as a singer, but also how proud he was of himself! Look at him go!!! (Bonus: If I’m bending the rules in terms of what qualifies as a solo I would 100% make his Paradise By the Dashboard Light. That was his undoubtedly his very best vocal performance. It’s SO FUCKING GOOD it makes me go batshit.)
RACHEL: My Man. “She may be difficult but boy can she sing.”
BRITTANY: Run the World. The dancing is definitely the more impressive part of this number, but it still sounds great! This song really highlighted Heather’s strengths, when most of her songs weren’t very memorable in my opinion.
MIKE: Cool. Maybe Tina should be a professional vocal coach because damn look at him go!! Idk why an Asian kid wanted to play the role of a leader of a white supremacist group but at least he sounds great 🤷♀️
MERCEDES: I Will Always Love You. Literally every single Mercedes song is perfect, so this was the hardest one for me. This means I had to base it on acting. And she DELIVERS here. It should be illegal to be this talented.
TINA: Because You Loved Me. The fact that this is one of TWO solos that Jenna actually got to finish infuriates me. She was ROBBED because she is an amazing singer.
SANTANA: Nutbush City Limits. LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, MISS NAYA RIVERA. HOLY SHIT. Finn saying before the song, “They say that true divas aren’t really mortal” is so true. This woman was an absolute icon and I will always be blown away by her talent.
JAKE: Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself). It’s so EARNEST and HEARTFELT and Jacob Artist popped off with the acting. And the falsetto!! God it’s just beautiful.
EMMA: Getting Married Today. This is a trio, not a solo, but it’s so fucking good that I HAD to do it. That is literally one of the hardest female songs on Broadway, and for some reason they had Jayma sing it even FASTER than the original version? I can’t imagine the stress of trying to do that, but she was perfect.
SAM: Copacabana. This is just a really fun song! Everyone’s having a good time and Chord sounds amazing.
RYDER: Your Song. This is my favorite Elton John song, and boy was it done justice. The acting is really good in this scene. The mix of anxiety and earnestness coming from Ryder is adorable. He had great chemistry with whoever that girl was. (On a storyline note, I hated how this all developed though. If it had gone my way, Unique would confess it was her, then Ryder would sing this directly to Unique.)
KITTY: Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours. I just really like this number. Obsessed with Becca’s high notes.
MARLEY: Wrecking Ball. The cheating storyline with Bree was so fucking stupid and shouldn’t have happened. That being said, Melissa ATE what they gave her and left zero crumbs. She really came in like a wrecking ball.
UNIQUE: I Know Where I’ve Been. THIS SONG MAKES ME GO FUCKING CRAZY!!! THE TRANS CHOIR!!!! THE ACTING!!!!! THE FUCKING HIGH NOTE!!!!!! IT’S JUST SO GOOD I CAN’T HANDLE IT!!!!!!! This is the best part of season 6, full stop. THE most underrated Glee song ever. I will not accept criticism towards this opinion.

She'll have to team up with Valis, an asari doctor with a dark past, Ezra, the mysterious occupant of the crate, and Ysa'mael Vas Pequa (her ex), to survive and foil Cerberus' plot to reclaim their lost asset.
I'm in love with this. The characters are fantastic and the story absolutely and immediately drew me in. Hits that itch for more Original Characters involved in the Reaper war.

I totally forgot about Mass Effect Andromeda so I started that.
And Question how in the world is the Character creator worse?!!!
This game should have the best character creator but it is some how five steps back from the original mass effect trilogy.
I like the makeup options i think thats the best part of the creator. BUT THE HAIR 🤮 how is it so ugly, the texture. it’s really bad. I just wanted a curly haired option that matches my hair but I swear with video-games its always only three options pin straight hair, slightly wavy or 4c no inbetween
But I do love that I have a brother and a dad in this game. And the fact that the dad looks like the character you make is super cool.
Im playing female ryder and here she is. I would have loved to custom her face way more but nooo

ok, catching up on Shazam! (2023):
issue #5:
I liked the opening with Mary rescuing Billy, but I didn’t like that she didn’t immediately realize how serious his condition was. even though this book isn’t using the Pre-Crisis bit of characterization that Captain Marvel can’t fight women, the scenes where he was fighting the gorillas and robots while Mary was fighting Queen Bee reminded me of Golden Age scenes, like in “Pin-Up Boy” in Whiz Comics (1940) #48, where Mary has to fight a female villain when Cap can’t. also, even though I like Mary and I like her intelligence being emphasized, her figuring out that the gods were manipulating Billy didn’t really work for me. I think it would have made more sense for Billy to have pieced that together because of how strange their different influences felt. anyway, at this point I’m remembering that when this book started I was hopeful that this plotline with the gods wouldn’t last very long.
issue #6:
I liked that the various items the kids used to become the new Squadron of Justice, like Bulletman’s helmet and Ibis the Invincible’s Ibis-Stick, have an actual history and aren’t just random items, i.e. Bulletman and Ibis the Invincible were previously heroes in this continuity. that there was already “a growing divide between your dual identities, each beginning to refer to the other as ‘ he’ rather than ‘I,’” and it’s going to get more dramatic appeals to me. I noted that this was happening back when the first issue came out, and I figured then that Mark Waid wasn’t going to go this far and that language was a compromise, like calling Billy “the Captain” instead of “Captain Marvel.” this moment is actually immediately followed by the Captain addressing Billy’s siblings as “kids.” I know that many fans have soured by now on emphasizing the age difference, but I think there’s an interesting way to do it- there was legitimately an age difference between Billy and Captain Marvel in the original comics- and I wonder if that’ll be an element in how this division is made more dramatic.
issue #7:
I don’t enjoy this book’s attempts at being absurd, like with these dinosaur accountants. I really like that Billy is in his school’s A/V club! I had liked the part of the story in the Shazam! Fury of the Gods movie that the Vasquezes were struggling financially, we’ll see how this house crisis works for me.
issue #8:
I think what made the financial situation in the movie compelling was the intense personal stakes of Billy being afraid that the Vasquezes won’t be able to afford having everyone and will kick him out when he turns 18. which was helped along by Asher Angel’s performance. I think I lack the prior investment in this comic era’s version of Billy to get really into this. I do like that this issue ends with Billy and Zeus on more positive terms, because I don’t really like the concept of Billy being in conflict with his empowering gods.
Issue #9:
I like Billy’s podcast getting more focused. he seems a little unprepared for his interview on Jack Ryder’s show, which isn’t much like the uber-competent radio reporter of the Pre-Crisis continuity that I know and love. regardless, I like that this issue focused on Billy as a broadcaster, and put that in the modern context of “content providers” and the idea what “sincerity is a plague” in the news profession. similarly, that “Your transformation dazzles people enough so they won’t catch you, but cameras aren’t so easy to confuse” also worked well along those lense, as the ‘dazzle’ thing is how Billy’s transformation worked Pre-Crisis. and I particularly really liked that this issue paralleled performing on TV with that Billy could “act like someone else entirely if [he] wanted to,” with the reality that as the Captain he’s Billy “Less so every day lately.”

It's a little complicated as I tend to put them in AUs, and they end up somewhat different depending on the story they're in yet I try to keep the cores of their characters the same. OG STORY - this is the tag I use to label my original concepts for these characters. Before their better known ML AU incarnations, I pictured them in this fairytale-esque fantasy au with Keagan as the main protagonist. Prince Keagan had a leisurely life as the spare to the throne who's only responsibility is tying down the most powerful knight of their generation to stay on their kingdom's side forever through marriage. Everything was set on a track and he had no intention of fighting it. He likes his hedonistic life as a prince and he gets along well enough with his fiance, it's not worth losing over a thing called "freedom". His destiny was agreeable to him... that is, until he learns of a horrible secret that puts his fiance in danger but she can't know about it lest she dies by her own sword because she is stubborn about protecting everyone like the goddamn knight she is. The prince is forced to take matters into his own hands and run away from the capital, recruiting an unlikely group of outcasts, creating enemies from the shadows and have his fiance and his other childhood friend try to drag him back home.
ML AU - this is the tag I use to lump together all stories set in the show called Miraculous Ladybug.
BTaL - Between Truths and Lies, posted on Ao3 and FF.net. Acronym can be pronounced to sound like "Beetle" lol. The basic premise is its lowkey a future gen fic focusing on the new heroes, Shizuke Midorikawa as Ladybug and Blair Crawford as Chat Noire. Follow their journey as they struggle through superheroing, magic, love, grief and one evil butterfly lady.
N2CatS - No Two Cats are the Same, posted on Ao3 and FF.net. Acronym can be pronounced like "N-2-Cats". It's the time travel story set midway S2 of BTaL that features canon characters and how they deal with being stuck with my ocs for a week. Focused mainly on character study. It jumps off from an alternate end to Ephemeral where Sass's last resort ends up yeeting Adrien and Blair into each other's eras.
Otome Game AU - You know those manhwas where the protagonist, usually female, wakes up one day into the romfan world of the otome game or novel she was reading before she died? And she's in the body of the villainess, or the heroine or some extra? This AU, that's my entire main cast. A group of tired and stressed college students were working on a game for their thesis. They either worked themselves to death or their kidneys gave out from too much red bull or maybe they were half asleep walking home when truck-kun came for them, who knows. Thing is, they all died. Individually woke up into the body of the character that was modelled after them - which explains how none of them realizes they're not the only one who reincarnated. Chaos ensues. Can they all come to the same page before its too late?

Nominations for Across Dark Space are Open!
You can nominate up to 20 different characters and/or pairings. The moderators will go through the pairings to check that each contains at least one MEA character from the Mass Effect Andromeda fandom. Any nomination that does not contain at least one MEA character from the Mass Effect Andromeda fandom will be rejected (and if you nominate a single character, they must be a MEA character). Nominations may consist of homosexual, heterosexual, threesomes, moresomes, or platonic requests.
I want to write a ME character/I want to write Shepard in Andromeda:
That’s completely fine. It will be considered a crossover and must contain at least MEA character in the pairing.

Go to the Across Dark Space Tagset on AO3 before September 26th at 11:59 US EST. Click nominate (you’ll need to be signed into AO3).
Nominate your favorite pairings/groupings! If your pairing doesn’t autofill, enter it anyway, and the moderators will take care of it on the other side. Please use Mass Effect Andromeda as your Fandom
(Note: when nominating a pairing using a slash “/” means it is a romantic pairing and using “&” means it is a platonic pairing)

For the purposes of this challenge, the Mass Effect Andromeda OC Protagonists will be considered different characters based on their gender and surname. For original fiction: It's Ruo. She started as a character I used for RPs. But now she's a whole person featured in her personal crazy nightmare series.

Black and white speckles shimmered in the air. They didn’t attempt to amalgamate into a whole or serveral wholes. So far, they merely danced in the dim light like dust motes. No screaming, no staticky whispers. But Ruo remained watchful. The muted colour room that resembled the safe parts of the Inbetween was empty. She didn’t trust the room or the speckles. Circling the cloud, she realised it filled the entire space. She could even be breathing it in. As soon as the thought occured to her, something inside her throat caught. She coughed and choked. Looking at her hands, static buzzed under her skin. No longer solid, but an amorphous cloud, she couldn’t hold shape.
Ruo screamed. Only a shriek came forth.

An interesting thing about Pelessaria (aka Peebee) is the fact that her father was not also an asari. Rather, Peebee is the offspring of an elcor father and her Asari “mother”.
This is in contrast to her half-sister, who was the offspring of an asari “father” and asari “mother”.
Note how I’ve put quotations around the words father and mother when referring to Peebee’s parent and stepparent. This is because the asari are a mono-gender race and can fill both paternal and maternal roles, despite having a primarily maternal instinct. The asari, like most Mass Effect species, are rather interesting in their biodiversity when compared to humans!
Here are a few facts about the asari’s cultural applications of gender:
Asari are a mono-gendered species with no concept of gender differences. At the same time, asari are often viewed as an all-female race.
To humans at least, asari appear female with breasts and voices that sound female. Even among the asari, many individual asari are referred to as “she” and “her“, but some asari prefer male pronouns, while others gravitate toward gender-neutral where language allows.
Asari also bear feminine titles like “huntress” and “matriarch” and asari offspring are referred to as “daughters“, however the asari may have chosen feminine pronouns to simplify language translations.
And, to tie back to the original point of this post, here are some details about how the asari reproduce:
Asari can mate and successfully reproduce with any other gender or species through a form of parthenogenesis. Although they have one gender, they are not asexual and do in fact require a partner to reproduce.
An asari provides two copies of her own genes to her offspring, one of which is passed on unaltered. The second set of genes is altered in a unique process called melding, also known as the joining or the union. During melding, the eyes of the asari initiating the meld dilate as she consciously attunes her nervous system to her partner’s, sending and receiving electrical impulses directly through the skin, however physical contact is not strictly necessary. Effectively, the asari and her partner briefly become one unified nervous system, sharing memories, thoughts, and feelings.
The offspring is always an asari, regardless of the species or sex of the “father” and in the case that the offspring is of two asari, the father is the one who does not give birth.
So what’s interesting in Peebee’s circumstances is that, due to the nature of sharing memories, thoughts, and feelings during this reproductive cycle, with her father being an elcor, there are unique characteristics that she possesses through her personality and psyche.
The elcor have a rather unique perspective on emotions and communication, so much so that “… a human smile seem[s] as subtle as a fireworks display.” Naturally, it’s come to mean that among the elcor, the smallest of gestures mean the world in terms of communication! Granted, their verbal communication tends to fall ponderous and monotone (so much so that they must prefix their dialogue with an emotive statement: “excited, this is good news to hear”). Additionally, elcor culture is built on small, tight-knit groups.
And we can see this through Peebee’s dialogue and interactions with the Tempest crew!
Even examining her relationship with the Pathfinder alone, Peebee tends to keep most people at an arm’s length and really linger between what she considers to be her home. She constantly holds this “one foot out the door” mentality, and doesn’t become entirely close with the crew (primarily Jaal and the Pathfinder) until they spend time together doing things. A notable example is found in her email after the Pathfinder joins her in zero-g within the Tempest escape pod:

While I can’t say I know this is true for all Asari/outside species offspring, I do think it’s interesting how this may have transferred in Peebee’s circumstances. I believe it may have even played a big role in why her failed relationship with Kalinda is so impactful on her.
And why she gets along with Jaal so well, as angara culture is very emotionally focused as well.
