Spy's Spec-Bio Essentials
I honestly didn't mean to write a full-on essay, but I couldn't help myself -I love specbio, and the recent revival of interest in it makes me very happy. If you wanna just get right to the meat: normal links are highlighted blue, YouTube links are highlighted red.
Speculative biology has its roots as far back as Pliny the Elder and his Natural History, though most consider H.G. Wells to be the true grandfather of the genre with works such as War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, and Man of the Year Million. However, any speculative biologist worth their salt credits Dougal Dixon as the father of specbio as we know it today –especially since he is the man who coined the term! Dixon's books After Man, Man After Man, and The New Dinosaurs are considered the foundational works of modern specbio. So too is Wayne Barlowe's book Expedition.
While the original printings of these books are very expensive to acquire, After Man recently received a Kindle version, and Expedition has a very good documentary adaptation available in totality on YouTube. Another important work of early speculative biology was the Discovery Channel limited series The Future Is Wild, a documentary show exploring the possible futures of life on Earth in several million years' time.
With the rise of the internet, people interested in speculative biology –those few and far between– could share their thoughts and amateur works with each other. Online specbio hit its first height around the mid-aughts to early tens, featuring many notable works that were very influential to me personally when I joined the scene circa 2014. Unfortunately, right around when I joined there was a notable "mass extinction" –many of the more active and prominent figures of the specbio community left the web behind for various reasons, and thus the golden age ended.
In recent years, partially thanks to certain YouTube video essays on the classic projects, interest in speculative biology seems to have increased dramatically! I've taken to calling the current era the "specbio renaissance," and it makes me so happy to see new, younger people interested in this unique facet of creativity. In light of this I've created this master post of my personal recommendations of essential specbio works for new "speccers" to enjoy!
The specbio community has congregated on forums for decades. I personally joined the community via DeviantArt right around when the old ZetaBoards forum underwent a massive host shift and never participated on the forum all that much, but fortunately the old Speculative Evolution Forum is still up and still active!
For those who'd prefer a simpler way to keep up with current events in the specbio community, Astrovitae is a free e-magazine dedicated to contemporary spec. A product of the recent specbio renaissance, Astrovitae only has a handful of issues thus far but is already becoming a staple publication in the field.
I made this post to provide what I think is key information and important resources, but the SpecBio Wiki is a far more thorough companion to your journey into the world of speculative biology. As always, though: beware ye old Wiki Rabbit Hole!
Biblaridion's Alien Biospheres video series is an excellent entry point for anyone looking to learn the basics of specbio. It's a demo xenobiology project, with a heavy focus on the scientific concepts used in building up the world and its ecology.
Curious Archive's Alien Worlds video series is an excellent collection of bite-size examinations of various specbio projects, including several on this list!
Nemo Ramjet (C. M. Kösemen)'s Life on Snaiad is universally considered a classic work of speculative biology, started in the early days of the golden age of internet specbio. Snaiad is an alien planet, in its early days of human habitation, filled with strange lifeforms bearing two "heads."
Kösemen's other well-known classic work is Alltomorrows, a short ebook exploring hundreds of millions of years' worth of possible human evolution. Readers, be advised: this work contains extensive body horror and discussion of human extinction, both circumstantial and deliberate.
Sagan IV, originally created by Hydromancerx, is one of the oldest and most extensive specbio projects. Started as a simple artistic exercise on a forum in 2006, Sagan IV has evolved into a large, highly collaborative vision of an alien world inspired by the works of Carl Sagan. It is still ongoing today, and you can participate in their regular contests and activities!
Gert van Dijk's Furaha is another of the well-known classic specbio projects, and one of the few from the golden age that is still fully active. Furaha itself is an alien world orbiting Nu Phoenicis which harbors a fascinating native biosphere, built upon carefully-researched biomechanics. The site itself is laid out much like an encyclopedia, and the accompanying blog is a treasure trove of specbio know-how and community history!
Sunrise on Ilion, a xenobiology project by @supermalmoworld, is a personal favorite of mine. Ilion is a planet tidally locked to a red dwarf star, and its endemic lifeforms often challenge our expectations for Earth-like ecology. The website boasts extremely detailed information on the setting and its inhabitants, as well as in-universe articles and logs of the various human expeditions to this fascinating world. The project is still active on a very sporadic basis, at least as per blog entries.
Nereus is a xenobiology project created by Evan Black; another reasonably well-known golden age work but one that is unfortunately no longer active. The world of Nereus, orbiting the star Achird, teems with life unfamiliar to the humans which seek to adopt it as their home. Like many specbio projects it adopts a documentarian style, but there are plenty of nuggets of story tucked in the articles.
Serina is a contemporary speculative evolution project created by the legendary Sheather; it is what I would consider the holotype of the "seed-world" branch of specbio. Serina is a planet populated only by the descendants of the domestic canary (and a few other organisms like guppies, snails, ants, sunflowers, bamboo, algae, etc). The project digs deeply into the various unique niches of the world and the organisms that evolve to fill them, and in doing so mixes nature-documentarian style with some of the most compelling and emotionally engaging storytelling I have read in years.
These are just what I think are the essentials. There are numerous other fantastic projects, both contemporary and from years ago, that I would highly suggest investigating! Contemporary honorable mentions that personally inspire me include @alexriesart's birrin, @iguanodont's birgs, @jayrockin's Runaway to the Stars, Christian Cline's Teeming Universe, Keenan Taylor's Kaimere, and my friend Mičkin's Temere!

Buckle up, there is a topic I want to rant about today. A few days ago this came across my dash and it reminded me of someone I knew from high school.
There was this kid at my high school everyone thought was a douche. He was good looking, popular, could sing, dance and play an instrument (I think it was guitar, but I don't remember it's been 20 years). He was getting lead roles in the plays as a sophomore (we didn't have freshman in our high schools out here in hick Utah where the running joke has always been we're behind the times by at 20-40 years), he got duck classes because he was getting acting jobs while in school.
We'll call him MH because those were his initials.
He was in my biology class and our science teacher had four groups of four debate creationism vs evolution (you shouldn't debate established fact but whatever). Two groups would be for creation and the other two would be for evolution.
I picked creation because I was a contrary child and wanted to debate the opposite of my actual views. (I was like thatTM) He picked evolution.
We got up and gave our arguments. Now our teacher wasn't a stupid man, stupid assignment aside. He knew his classes. He knew teenagers. He gave them two voting slips. One for who liked the best. Popularity wise. And the other for who gave the best arguments.
Now for some added context, this is Utah. Mormonville. Creation is basically hardwired into our psyche from birth. The chances of EVOLUTION winning was as likely as a pig sprouting wings.
But I was not well liked in high school, I was an epileptic, ADHD, anxiety riddled nerd. So MH's team got the votes for both the best argument and the most popular, because fuck me that's why. (And yeah, this sounds like my anxiety talking, but no these little shits told me that to my face.)
I can't remember how long exactly it was. Long enough that I got over it, but fresh enough I knew what he was talking about. But shortly after this shit show we have a fire drill. It was cold, it was miserable and I was ready to start cussing for the warmth.
MH comes up to me and the two friends I was with and tells me "Hey, I think it was crap that you lost. Your team had the better argument and was better articulated. I just wanted to let you know." And then melted back into the crowd of students.
I didn't think he knew what my name was, if I'm honest. But he came up to me and told me that I should have won. Even my friends were shocked. Now of course I was bitter about losing, because how could I not be? But the fact that the hottest guy in school came up to me and said that? I felt vindicated.
From that day on though? I was a staunch MH supporter. I was tell people that he was probably shy and very busy (you know with the whole acting jobs thing).
TL;DR: high school douche goes out of his way to tell me that I should won the on merit side of a stupid debate and I find out not a douche after all.
So why do I bring this up? Because of Steve Harrington. He has literally everyone saying he was an ass in high school. That he has to atone. But other than some instances where it was absolutely warranted we never really see Steve be a douche. Just typical teenager shit. And every time he does something "bad" he apologizes for it.
But all his friends are still giving him shit about it three years later. But not Jonathan who was an actual fucking criminal. Like he didn't have develop the sex pictures if he was looking for evidence of the thing that took his brother. I've developed film. The negative, while small gives you a pretty good indication of what would develop.
And yeah Nancy forgave him, but no one asked Steve if he forgave him. Because he was in those pictures, too. Steve was just as violated as Nancy was. And if the scene we see is any indication, Steve was probably more predominately featured than Nancy was, because he was on top. Meaning he would have covered her most of the time.
So no, I don't think Steve was a bully. No, I don't think he has anything to atone for that he hasn't already atoned for in fucking spades. I think he was always that same lovable dork he always was and Nancy had nothing to do with his "hero arc". But I have my own thoughts about Nancy that are way too long for this already massive dash stretcher.

Tomorrow I've got Biology exam which is made by my bio teacher at school, it's for me to see how it's going so far lol I promise NOT to cry if I get a bad grade.
Structure of the atom ✅️
Basic directions of evolution ✅️

South Scrimshaw
South Scrimshaw: Part 1 is a free visual novel in the style of a nature documentary, exploring the life and habitat of the (fictional) species Pistrixiana sylvefera: the Brillo whale.
Tumblr media
It’s an enchanting work of speculative biology. The whales themselves are fascinating, and the slow unfolding of the setting’s larger context and history is a joy to experience. Plus, it’s got seabunnies, “stupid but friendly” sharks, and a very troubling implication about cephalopod intelligence! (A minor warning for animal death-  this is a nature documentary, after all.)
Tumblr media
It’s definitely worth picking up if you’re interested in speculative biology/evolution or worldbuilding more broadly, or if you just want to see cool animals illustrated in a dreamy, Studio Ghibli-inspired art style.
Tumblr media
Oh, and play with headphones if you can-- the soundscape (narration, music, animal vocalizations, and environmental sounds) is beautiful and worth experiencing in full.
Tumblr media
On the whole, I think it’s really, really well-done. It took me about 2.5 hours to go through Part 1′s 4 chapters, and I was totally engrossed the entire time.
The visual novel format is smartly employed for pacing, and the footnote-style asides about the documentary’s context (other species of interest, the setting’s history and folklore, the crew’s technology, etc.) are tantalizing glimpses into what already feels like a well-developed world. Small details are scattered through the main story, building to a few larger reveals near the end of Part 1-- I won’t spoil anything, but so far I’m reminded of some of the best of the “slow burn” sci-fi worldbuilding tradition, and I’m excited to see more.
Tumblr media
South Scrimshaw was created by N.O. Marsh and is available for free on Steam and Itch.

~3.6k words. / well uh. yeah it's actually what it says. GHOSTFACE! remind me to stop writing on my phone because I forget some important details all the time akfjsjfhd. ANYWAYS. [Killing people is a new pastime for him. He planned for his third victim to be extra special. Doesn't goes exactly to plan.]
Warning: talk of murder and gore. It's not too detailed but keep caution. And I wanna say this is heavily romanticized so. Keep it in mind. If someone is trying to kill you, run away not towards.
And also apologies: I forgot the blood and knife kink. Next part I'll add it in. ;-;
title inspired by Happy Together by Slothrust
×
It's warm, underneath the mask and the costume. Makes him sweat and his mouth dry but all he can focus on is your form, slouched over the kitchen table. Books and papers spread out over the table, with you writing over some with a loose grip and droopy eyes. Part of him wants to kiss the side of your head and take you to bed, his hands holding your knees and back while you tuck your face into his shoulder. He also wants to stick the knife he's twirling deep in your guts, twist it until you stop screaming and all you can do is cry and look at him. Look at him and die.
He waits till you look close to passing out, head slowly falling before snapping back up several times, waits till you sigh and continue the attempt at homework.
He dials the phone number. Watches as you startle completely awake, rummaging through the mess of books and assignments until you find the culprit, not even bothering to check the caller ID. And he hears your voice Crack a little in greeting, "he-" and he smiles a little when you yawn in the middle of your sentence, "Hello? Who's this?"
He doesn't know what to say, "sorry, I think I might have called the wrong number." He doesn't make the move to hang up though.
He hears and sees you hum and you look up to the ceiling, scratching at your forehead, "well, I hope you find who you're looking for." And you hang up the phone, sitting up in your seat. He brings the phone down from his ear only to re-dial, swallowing.
He gets to see your shoulders jerk back in surprise when the phone starts ringing again. He can't help the adrenaline building in his chest. He needs to chase you down, taunt you, make you scream his name, carve you as his. His third victim of the night.
"I think you got the wrong number again." You say, looking down at your homework, checking the phone number this time.
"I did, but I was hoping I could talk to you." The knife sits heavy in his grasp, he could almost feel the metal humming with excitement. Maybe that's just him.
"I wouldn't mind talking, I just got a lot of homework to do." You bite down on your bottom lip, scanning the papers. He could just barely make the cover of the book when you close it and make room for another. Biology.
"Maybe I could help." He has before, wasn't even too long ago. You struggled often with the terms, and that'll fuck you up in the long-run.
"I'm not sure that you could, you can't even see what I'm working on." You've abandoned the books and papers now, leaning against the back of your seat. Staring at the ceiling.
"If you'd talk me through it, I could."
"So generous, what, you're gonna tell me how to solve for x?" The way you smile while covering half of your face makes his heart beat faster. He can't wait much longer. He has to have you soon.
"Solving for x isn't going to help you with your evolution paper." Your smile drops, back straightens up while you look around. It's dark outside, so dark, you'd never see him but you look right at him. Even if unknowing, you did and his heart skips a beat. He wants to hear your heart skip like his too. Beating fast and full of fear.
"I'm- I'm not working on an evolution paper- who is this?" He can't help the small laugh that bubbles out of him, he feels high. High on a power trip, high on the genuine fear building inside of you.
"Except you are, have three books open and everything. Think you need help more than I do."
"This isn't funny." Your face scrunched up, he could guess fear or maybe confusion. Frustration.
"I never said it was." He moves out of his spot from the window, making his way to the back of the house. The thing about you is that as a college student, somehow you're the one at home while your parents are out, having fun. If you'd only gone with them.
He makes it to the back door where he can see a light turned on in a bedroom window, opened for the breeze to come in. He smiles to himself. "I just wanted to talk." His eyes glance to the glass door, seeing your figure hunch over the table, arm wrapped around your torso.
"About what?" You ask and he sighs this time.
"Nothing in particular, just wanted to talk." He ends up biting on the blunt part of the knife, hauling himself up to the window by the bricks and the chair he found conveniently placed there. When he makes it into the bedroom, he could see this is definitely yours. "Do you have a boyfriend?"
"I-" he could hear you scoff from the phone and downstairs, "yes, actually I do." He moves from your bedroom to what he assumed was your parents.
"Then why don't you have any pictures of him in your room?" He could hear the sharp intake of air, could hear the way you haul yourself out of the chair.
"I'm calling the cops."
"You don't want to do that." He warns, moving around the room and tracing the decor with the tip of his knife.
"Why not?" He could hear your voice break a little and he's not ashamed of the way his cock twitched in his pants. The whole thing made him want to hang up and just chase you down, pin you to the ground and- and-
He could already see it, red spilling out of you and staining the floorboards or the carpet. Your mouth gaping open in a permanent scream. He felt like he could come in his pants right now.
"Would hate to see your parents' guts all over the kitchen. Weren't they getting home in an hour?"
There's silence over the phone.
And when you speak, your voice is small, trembling, "what do you want from me?"
"I just want to talk to you."
For the most part, that is true. He's always wanted to talk to you. Listen to you more, hear what kind of sounds you'd make. How you'd sound writhing beneath him. Saying his name. He wants to hear you. Feel you with his bare hands. You were supposed to be the first victim, actually. But then the big, frat party happened and you held his arm while you kissed his cheek. Thanking him for watching your drink.
"And you can't talk to me, face to face?" You tried to sound tough. He can hear it, the way you pulled every ounce of strength to talk as if this wasn't the scariest thing happening to you as of yet.
It's cute.
"You want to see me?" He asks, flipping the knife in his hand.
"I want to know who I'm talking to." He clicked his tongue and then peeked out of the room, you still haven't checked the upstairs.
"Go to your room then, I'm still looking for that boyfriend you claim to have."
He hangs up the phone this time, shoving it into his pocket beneath the long fabric. You won't find him there, and he wishes he could hear your heart pound inside of your chest, beating so hard because he lied. He could be anywhere in the house and you have no way of knowing. He licks his lips. Is this how a god feels?
He hears each step you take, hears you falter as you reach the door. If he remembered right, the door had been closed before he left. But then he hears the door closing, without any of the footsteps going inside. Seems like you didn't want to see him at all.
He moves quickly then, out of the bedroom where he sees your back turned towards him. Yet, he sees the bumps rising on your skin, sees the hair rising up. Even your body knows how much danger you're in. His little prey to catch. His mouth salivates faster.
You don't even get to turn around fully, fingers already reaching to call the cops when he snatches the phone out. Your surprised gasp turns into a scream when he throws it behind him, brandishing the knife in its place. You don't hesitate to run towards the stairs. He gives you a split-second before he follows after, already feeling the need to sink his knife into your skin, catching your mouth in a gasp. Make you say his name before you die.
He calls your name in a song, singing for you to turn around while you trip on the stairs. You barely make it to your feet in time when he reaches the bottom, his gloved hand barely grazes the skin on your arm. It sparks something inside of him to move faster, running after you. Though it only does so much until you hit the lights, ducking around the corner and flat out disappearing on him. If he remembers right, after this hallway, it's a straight shot to the kitchen and backyard. He smiles under the mask.
"Listen, if you want me to leave you alone, you'll have to talk to me. But I get it, you don't love your parents enough, would rather let them take the fall-" and he hears a grunt, moving forward enough to miss a whole chair. His heart beats faster. You tried to hit him with a chair?
"Leave my parents alone." You hissed, backing away from the now broken chair. Your fists are closed and leaning on either side of the walls. You're already tired. Perfect.
He doesn't say anything, looking from the pile of wood and nails and fabric, to you. He pushes the wood to the side slowly, making a show of how easy it is for him to step over the mess. Watching as you backed away and backed up till you darted for the stairs again. He runs after you, feeling the burn in his lungs and his legs but it's addicting, these feelings. He can't ever get enough.
He reaches for your ankle, finding purchase to pull you down but then you just kick him away, scrambling up the steps. He makes it to the landing, just in time to see you enter your room, striding over to hold the door open when you try to lock it. Trying to run past him, he only catches you, shoving you back. Your legs hit the desk and you can only gasp whenever he has you pinned against your desk, pressing himself fully against you. The tip of his knife just barely touches the skin of your collarbone but it's all the same. All it takes is a second and he can have you bleeding out and dead within the hour.
The both of you breathe heavy, with him holding the back of your head with one hand and the knife in the other. He can feel the burning touch of your fingers latched onto his arm. Just like that night at the party.
In the split second that he thought he would be spilling your blood, he's gasping for air. "Got you." And you swallow.
"Are you gonna kill me?" He can see the tears pooling in your eyes, glittering in the dark as you ask him. To be honest, he did. He wanted to. There was something else that he wanted to do right now.
"Got something better in mind?" He asks, ignoring the very temptations that brought him to this moment.
Your lip trembles, your head moving in his hand as you nod. The tip of your tongue reaches out to wet your mouth and he can't help the trance it puts him in. Call him weak, he doesn't care. There's just about a thousand other ways, thousand other things on his mind.
"Are you going to call the cops?" You shake your head no. He chews on the inside of his cheek, looking through the mask and at you, so quiet, so patient and ready for whatever he had to say. He makes up his mind. "Keep your eyes closed."
Your eyes don't close immediately, but after looking him in the eyes and despite finding nothing, your eyes flutter shut and he could still tell your eyes were darting from side to side. And for a moment, he only admires. How wet your cheeks are with tears, how shiny and pretty they look. How your skin might look so beautiful with a few lines carved in. He breathes in. He'll be here all night. But like he said, your parents come home soon. He doesn't have the time he thought he had.
He slides the mask off, the air much cooler now that it wasn't so trapped under there. He leans in, pressing his hips closer to yours and he groans at the pressure, his nose tracing the skin of your throat. His tongue darting out and tracing the lines there, tasting the sweat he finds. He hums when he hears you gasp at the touch. His eyes are wide open, and he can't help it, the way his hips roll into yours and your fingers drift from his arms to his shoulders, the nails digging into the fabric.
He can't help himself, chasing the pleasure, chasing you. He leaves plenty of hickeys, sucking them into your skin, leaving as much claim he can without yet fucking his cum into you.
He trails his tongue from your exposed collarbone to your throat, soaking up the shudder you couldn't hold back. With him pressing a kiss until he licks over your jaw, he reaches for your mouth and finds you eager to kiss him back, mouths sliding against each other. He swallows the noises you leave out, unsure if you meant for him to hear or anything, but all the same, it makes his cock twitch while it's pressed against your lower half.
He reaches closer and licks into your mouth, itching to get even closer till he can only peel back your skin and crawl inside, till the both of you blend as one and the separation alone would kill you both. He doesn't know this feeling as well. He wants to know more. He wants to keep kissing you.
He pulls away, though, and he finds it surprising he enjoys the aftermath, the way your head is completely resting in his hand and your eyes stare at him, half-lidded. Panting.
"You were supposed to keep your eyes closed," he mumbles, taking a free hand to swipe the drying tears away from your face. "Can't seem to fucking listen, can you?" It's no use, you already saw his face. However, he can't help but pinch your cheeks between two of his fingers, watching as you let him.
"Are you going to kill me?" The repeated question only solidified the answer in his head.
"Depends, how much do you want to live?" And with that, you surged forward, sitting up on the desk and lifting your shirt off your torso, tugging on his costume. It's a tussle of clothes coming off and occasionally you leaned forward to steady yourself, kissing him with a newfound urgency. As if you'd die if you stopped.
Admittedly, he doesn't think he'd kill you now. At least not tonight. He didn't say that though.
While you wrap your arm around his neck, he doesn't notice when your cold fingers slip down his pants until the jarring touch grazes his cock. One of his hands shoots straight to your wrists, his mouth dropping into a moan, singing your praises as you kiss him with more fervor. He doesn't think it could get better until you whisper for him to go sit on your bed.
With his legs spread, the costume gone and his eyes staring at you, you step around the discarded clothing, keeping your stare leveled and pointed even when you kneel before him, unzipping his jeans.
"Have you done this before?" He can't help but ask, wondering how many guys have sat in his spot on your bed with their hickeys dotting your skin.
"Wanna be specific?" You ask, and with more care he'd ever give himself, your hands wrap around his shaft and he can't help the hiss as you lean over to drag your tongue over the head.
"Am I going to be your first?" He grits out, hand reaching out to hold your wrist before you could swallow him down.
You blink at him, then a slight tick upwards from your lips. "Am I yours?" And before he could process that bombshell, you shake his hand off, sliding him into your mouth and he could- he could die.
The warmth of your mouth was almost too- too much. Your tongue bumping alongside the head of his cock as you bobbed your head made him bite his tongue, groaning. But he was hopeless whenever you started to swallow him down. He tried to hold tight on your bed-frame, the sheets anything but his hips still jerked up. Choking you, and making you slide off of him with a cough. "A little warning, next time." And without much else to say, your mouth enveloped him again. He wasn't going to last much longer.
And before he could come, he made you pull off, pulled you up by the throat to make you stand and kissed you, and could just barely taste himself. Kissed you and kissed you until you had to pull away.
"Before we start, where am I coming?" He held onto your chin, leaning close enough to where he could breathe the air you were. Could almost taste your lips again if he twitched.
"Where do you want to?" And just like that, he was grinning and pulling you back to the bed, pressing you into it. Pressed his hands on either side of your head and kissed you deep, kissed you until he couldn't breathe properly. Till he had to breathe through his nose and fumble his way between the two of you.
The gasp he caught in his mouth mirrored yours, the feeling indescribable. Couldn't help the way he took your hand and laced your fingers together, rocking into you as you cried from the intrusion. "I'll make it worth it." He whispered, taking the back of your thighs and lifting them a little more, finding more room to thrust and the way your head tilted back, leaving room to crane his neck, kiss the skin by your ears and whisper filth, sing your praises.
Moment by moment that he was inside of you, he couldn't help but want this all the time, hoping there wasn't a day in his lifetime that there couldn't be this. Where he couldn't have this with you. Hoped and wished he could have you.
Wasn't that the idea in the first place? To make you his?
And when his high neared closer and closer, he tried to help you as much as he could, reaching a hand between you two and listened to the way you sang for him. Until you came first, your walls clenched down around him and caused spots in his vision. He quickly followed suit, pulling out in time to cover your stomach in his cum.
It's silent after, mostly panting between the both of you. He catches you off guard, leaning back to lap at your stomach, leaving it clean and keeping eye contact while he moves up to give you a kiss. He pulls away, listening to you breathe and weakly clinging to him when he moves to get up. "We need to talk about-" he cuts you off with one more chaste kiss, tonight, oh he's more than aware of that. He's more than aware of what happened tonight. He wonders if you'd be up to recreate it in the future. He wasn't planning to leave you alive but he's glad he is now.
"I'll call you." He moves to leave when you reach out, grabbing him by the throat.
"If you call me later without cleaning up the chair downstairs, I will kill you." And to add salt to injury, you look him over and smile. He doesn't mind the kiss on the cheek before you push him off the bed. "Parents will be home in twenty, you better start now."
You don't say anything when he steals one more kiss from you.
He walks out of the house nineteen minutes later, downstairs free from any indication that he tried to kill one of the residents. The costume is stuffed in a grocery bag and one hickey freshly bitten behind his ear. And when he sniffs his shirt, it almost smells like you. He smiles.
The breeze ruffles his shirt and hair, chilling him instantly. Someone runs right into him, hardly apologizing and he recognizes the asshole.
Glancing to the bag in his hand, he turned down the corner of an apartment building, walking all the way down till he reached an opening point, right where the asshole lives. The smile on his face twitches into a grin. The night is still alive and he could still take another prick out.
(You come to a much earlier realization that he forgot the knife on your desk than he does, when he realizes he has to improvise in the moment.)

It is 2023, and there is time for South Scrimshaw: Part One.
I played through tonight, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who loves speculative evolution, visual novels, aliens, nature documentaries, and/or whales. It's a visual novel about the calfhood and adolescence of an alien whale.
It's on the very low-interaction side of the visual novel scale. Most interaction is clicking to advance the story, but there are, essentially, footnotes that you can click on to learn more about the wider world and universe this little whale lives in.
The hints at what humanity is like at this is just enough to whet the appetite for more, written to an in-universe audience that doesn't bother to explain things everyone should know. Reminds me pleasantly of The Crucible of Time, in that sense. But even more tantalizing for me is the beautifully detailed speculative biology, centred of course on my favourite animal group, the cetaceans. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it.
It made me cry really hard at The Usual Trigger and I had to take a breather in the middle because of that, but it was well worth it. I've listed some content warnings under the cut. Give it a try! It's free on Steam and won't take more than an hour or two!
Animal death, infant death, parental death are the death ones. The Brillo whales that star in this visual novel also have adaptations that may make folks with trypophobia very uncomfortable.

Not sure who needs to hear this but like, you’re SUPPOSED to gain weight as you transition from your late teens to early through mid 20’s. ESPECIALLY afab people (Amab people also, I’m just speaking from the perspective of an afab person who struggled with body image at this age). Like, you’re transitioning from your “awkward teen body” to your grown-up body. I’m not gonna say numbers on this blog because it’s not the point, but I gained a decent amount between the ages of 18-25, mostly around 22-23. Because despite the fact that I don’t want kids, my body is still preparing for childbirth. My biology was naturally like “okay bby let’s make pregnancy safe for you” and that meant putting on weight, getting more curves… etc. it’s normal. But it was something that for some reason, people felt like it was okay to comment on. My mom, for all her good intentions, literally tried to starve me back into my “young teen body” the second I started putting on weight as I hit biological womanhood, and it fucked me up for a long time. It’s still something I have to remind myself of- my weight gain in my 20’s is normal and steady and its OKAY to grow into an adult body at those ages and gain weight and not something people should comment on. But diet culture and these fucked up societal beauty standards have literally caused people to forget what normal body evolution looks like. Even if you’re not on any new meds (and if you are, doubly so!)
So hey, if you’re at a transition point in your life and your clothes don’t fit- it’s okay. It’s normal. Get them taken out, or get new clothes if you can, but don’t change your body to fit the clothes. Our bodies naturally change shape as they age. It’s normal. It’s okay. You’re fine. You’re beautiful.

My mom got me a bunny! I named her Sherbet because she sort of reminds me of sherbet. I went through several names however. At first it was Bun-Bun and then Hop-Hop and then BeBe and then Poppy, and then I think I finally settled on Sherbet. I will let you know if I change my mind again. Isn't she cute though?
The study day went by quickly. I didn't need my full four hours, so I added in a supplement for Biology since we're on the evolution unit right now. My curriculum is mostly a creationist perspective, although it touches on evolution and natural selection, so I found this docuseries called Life on Our Planet which dives deeper into evolution. I don't need my parents permission to watch the docuseries since they give me a lot of freedom around things like that, but I still let them know I was going to. Apparently my dad has already seen it, and he thought I would enjoy it. That was a surprise to me that he had watched it. The first episode was suspenseful, but I am looking forward to watching more. I will have to build it into my study day somehow. I think it has 10 episodes, all a little under an hour long.
Tasks Completed:
Geometry - Learned to construct perpendicular bisectors and angle bisectors + practice + practice with proofs involving segments and angles + honors work
Lit and Comp II - Reviewed Unit 21 vocabulary + read chapter 39 of Emma by Jane Austen
Spanish 2 - Vocabulary test (100%)
Bible I - Read Judges 12-13
World History - Read second part of the introduction to the unit + read about Albert Einstein + read about Pablo Picasso + viewed some of Picasso's artwork
Biology with Lab - Read and watched videos on the functionality of life from a creationist perspective
Foundations - Read the definition of self-control + completed next quiz on Read Theory + read an article about propaganda in schools
Piano - 60-minute piano lesson + practiced for one hour
Khan Academy - None today
CLEP - None today

What I’m Grateful for Today:
I am grateful that my parents agree and encourage me to study the beginnings of life from creationist and evolutionist perspectives instead of only creationism.
Quote of the Day:
Every act of creation is first of all an act of destruction.
-Pablo Picasso
🎧Suite in B minor for piano, op. 58 - Charles-Marie Widor

Pokédex Update:
Greavee- the mixed-breed Pokémon. A ghost/normal type. It doesn't evolve, and is often seen around groups of very bizarre varieties of Eevee as well as other dog Pokémon, encouraging them to be kind to each other and get along.
Notes:
- Before the humans disappeared, this pokémon was discovered in a far off region by a wildlife researcher. It was first believed to be a variant of greavard, but was later identified as a naturally established hybrid between greavard and eevee. It is unknown what led the parent pokémon to cohabitate, but it seems this species has significantly more unusual DNA than its predecessors. It is capable of having offspring that starkly overshadow the variations of standard eevee colonies, which influences their known evolutions to change to some degree as well. Now that there is more space for these pokémon to inhabit, they and their like-species counterparts are practically everywhere. They seem to be the best suited for the destabilizing environments since their biology is already unstable.
- It is rumored that these variations have achieved expansion into other types, such as Flying, Dragon, and Ground. However, due to their increasingly unstable nature, this pokémon's genetic traits are more likely to cancel each other out during evolution. No one has found evidence of what the result could look like.

(( Original design by @infectois , now owned by myself!
I love this adopt's design because it exactly reminds me of my shi-tzu Brindy, who passed away years ago. This has become my way of including her in the upcoming story, and I look forward to drawing her antics. ^^ ))

"you hear a very familiar beep beep in the distance" beep beep!
"a pink car with a blob appeared, the blob hoping out of the car and waddles to you in glee" hello!! I'm back! The car was awesome human Nikola! It was fast and it was link.and then I drove here with only my head with no hands!
"the blob spoke in glee, hopping around your ankles in excitement m" but I came here for the thing! The story thingy! But
"the blob coughed, pulling out a really small book the size of it's it's head, that was really tiny,it was a really tiny book" but I think you would like biology more than silky stories so!
"the blob waddles to you with the very tiny book" I got myself a book of evolution because uhh it's related to science things?....
"the blob hummed" but anyway! Let me give you context! I am a blob! I can travel to other plains of existence, and I can talk to others!
*the blob gave a very short explanation about dimensional travel" so anyways in one of the universes I visit is one where alpha's and Omega exist
Now you must wonder, what in the world is an omega, well you see an omega in this dimension is the Greek alphabet, omega stands for last in the Greek alphabet
But In other dimensions it is a gender of sorts "the blob hummed" it's like in wolf terms you are lowest and weakest in the pack and yeah that's about it
"The blob hummed" hold on I need to write down the facts my head is getting confused
"the blob frowned and read through the book trying to remind so in can tell it to you"
"how fascinating! Dimensional travel huh? May I ask how you do such a thing?!"

Guest Column: Queer Ecology Author(s): TIMOTHY MORTON
Queer Ecology: 'Frankensteinian meme splice' between ecological criticism and queer theory. Foundations--ecology and queer theory both demand intimacies with other beings.
"Our era requires it--we are losing touch with a fantasy Nature (capitalized to emphasize that it is less natural than nature) that never really existed" while we are losing the very real life forms in Earth's sixth mass extinction event…
Judith Butler identified how heterosexist gender performance produces the binary--inside//outside. Ideologies of Nature , are founded on inside-outside structures that resemble the boundaries heterosexism polices
when the environment becomes intimate--as in our current age of ecological crisis--it is no longer an environment since it no longer just happens around us; this is the difference between weather and climate.
society once defined itself by excluding dirt, germs, pollution but this is impossible--we must know where our waste goes. "excluding pollution is part of performing Nature as pristine, wild, immediate and pure" (274)
'science is too important to be left to scientists.' nonessentialism- Darwin; evolution=lifeforms made of other lifeforms
deconstruction--no text or lifeform is one 100% 'authentic'
'queer theory and ecology supposed a multiplication of differences at as many levels and on as many scales as possible' 275 (reminds me of infinite diversity in infinite combinations...star trek)
'life is catastrophic, monstrous, non holistic, and dislocated, not organic, coherent, or authoritative'
'life-forms are liquid; positing them as separate is like putting a stick in a river and saying, 'this is river stage x' (reminds me of mni wiconi-water is life)
life forms constitute a mesh--that blurs all boundaries between species, living/nonliving, organisms and environment.
gender diversity and biodiversity are deeply intertwined. plants and animals are hermaphroditic before they are bisexual and are bisexual before they are heterosexual. males and females of most plants and half the animals can become hermaphrodites either together or in turn, and hermaphrodites can become male or female; many switch gender constantly.
the story of evolution is a story of diverse lifeforms cooperating with one another.
evolutionary satisficing--if your body kind of works, you can keep it. gender and DNA are both performative.
speciesism- underlied with sexism, racism and homophobia
any attempt at queer ecology must imagine ways of doing justice to life-forms while respecting the lesson of evolutionary biology--that the boundary between life and nonlife is thick and full of paradoxical entities. 276
the life//nonlife binary--there isn't a rigid, narrow boundary between the two. if a virus is alive, a devil's advocate might claim, so is a computer virus.
queer ecology might abandon the term 'animal' and adopt something like 'strange stranger' (arrivant)--irreducible, whose arrival cannot be predicted or accounted for (hospitality).
instead of reducing everything to sameness, ecological interdependence multiplies differences everywhere. unmysterious and miraculous. interdependence--it is the reason life exists at all
queer ecology questions the human//nonhuman binary. queer ecology--go the end and show how beings exist precisely because they are nothing but relationality, deep down--for the love of matter.
every life form is familiar because we are related to it. we share DNA, cell structure, subroutines in the brain. collectivity--consciously choosing coexistence
we shall achieve a radical ecological politics only by facing the difficulty of the strange stranger. (we have others--rather, others have us--literally under our skin (clark))
Against Compulsory Nature
to solve our environmental problem (like global warming) we should be working with intimacy.
darwin; the engine of sexual selection is sexual display. appearances and behaviors. sexuality=sheer aesthetic display
environmentalism-tries to rise above sexuality. Loving Nature becomes enslaved to masculine heteronormativity. a performance that erases the trace of performance--"leave no trace". masculinity is 'Natural'-'Natural' is Masculine. rugged, bleak, masculine Nature defined through contrasts; outdoorsy and extraverted, heterosexual, able-bodied. aggressively healthy, hostile to self-absorption. Not feminine, no room for irony or ambiguity, nonhumorus. Masculine Nature is afraid of its own shadow, afraid of subjectivity
Organicism wants Nature untouched, 'virgin', established by exclusion, then the exclusion of exclusion. Naturalized. queer ecology--interconnectedness is not organic. mythical Nature dissolves when we look directly at it.
'dark ecology'--zombie-like quality of interconnected lifeforms, keeps going and going and going like the undead Frankenstein--queer ecological ethics might regard beings as people even when they aren't people.
Tumblr media
vegetarian (vegan) rhetoric often obsessed with obsession, equating madness with crime, crime with disease: longing for a society without a trace--a society without people
Into the Wild novel--fatal experimentation with masculine Nature, realizes other people are important just before dying from a poisoness plant. he was not in as remote a location as he believed. his concept of wilderness overrode his survival instinct. they might think they are escaping civilization and its discontents but they actually act out its death instincts. fantasize control and order; "i can make it on my own"--myth of self made man, editing out love, warmth, vulnerability and ambiguity. Queer ecology must visualize the unbeautiful, the uncold, the 'lame', the unsplendid
joy as coexistance with coexistance
ecology and queer theory are intimate. its not that ecological thinking would benefit from an injection of queer theory from the outside. it's that, fully and properly, ecology is queer theory and queer theory is ecology: queer ecology.

So how we feeling about that fake Diglett aka Wiglett?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel like everyone's gonna disagree with me on this one, but I honestly don't care much for Wiglett here.
Before anyone tries to tell me, yes, I know what convergent evolution is, I knew about it long before Wiglett. As a biology nerd, I feel like this should appeal to me more. It makes sense mechanically—you couldn't have a Paldean Diglett outside of Paldea, but because Wiglett is convergent it can appear in any game, which is nice. It's really just the design part of it just does absolutely nothing for me.
My big problem with it is that the design is just too plain, and way too similar to Diglett. Anyone who's been reading these reviews knows that I like my Pokemon designs to be unique. My favorite regionals, for example, are the ones that are new takes on old Pokemon that actually feel like a refreshing and interesting twist on the design. Ones that stray too close to the original design (for example, Alolan Meowth) feel unnecessary and uninteresting to me.
So with Wiglett here, it's regular Diglett... but longer and white. Sorry, but that's not enough for me. It's actually based off of a garden eel, which is a perfect inspiration, as they stick out of the ground in much the same way as Diglett do:
Tumblr media
But look how pretty they are! All those spots and speckles make for a striking look, and little things like them having fins help remind you that this is an aquatic creature. I would've loved to see a bit of speckling and a small back fin on Wiglett here; especially because it feels very "naked" as is. Right now you'd be forgiven for not realizing it was an eel with a connection to the water in the first place.
Tumblr media
Diglett got away with few details because it was a dark color and much shorter; elongate it like this and make it a light color and it ends up feeling empty. I know they're supposed to look similar, but something like that would still keep them looking similar enough to justify the concept. I like the brighter red nose, but otherwise it's just a Long Diglett to me. (Though it's also worth noting that Wiglett might evolve into something different than a Dugtrio-ish thing, which would help justify it being more similar at this stage.)
I will say, however, that we know of one other convergent evolution Pokemon through leaks. I can't go into detail here out of fear of spoiling people, but the second one might be much more interesting and have a more interesting design if they're going the direction I think they'll go with it. So the idea of convergent Pokemon might not be inherently bad; it might just be this design specifically that doesn't do it for me.
Side note: Man, the ground effects on these guys look terrible. In Gen 1 they weren't considering things like 3D environments, but having a mismatched clump of sediment that rotates around with the Pokemon is Not Great. I feel like they could've at least dropped the ground from Wiglett and just had it coming straight out without a pile or something. Or at least make the base sediment stay still while the Pokemon looks around.
Tumblr media
So yeah, good idea in theory that could lead to some interesting concepts in the future... but if they all just look like recolors with one single element changed like Wiglett does here, I think I'll stick to loving regionals instead. Sorry Wiglett. You're still cute.

why is urban evolution starting to remind me of evolution in biology. like we have cell specialisation and we have street specialisation were these the same things all along?
