Some of you will probably find this funny
When I first formed I didn’t know what a bird was. Like I knew they were flying animals but I’d never seen or heard one. And what was the first bird I ever saw irl? A kookaburra.
Those mfs laugh like they just watched you fall on your face and it caught me so off guard I low key freaked out. Then the host told me there’s a nest of them in the tree outside and we hear them all the time (yay Australia) and I just????
We have to wake up to THAT??? Birds are weird.
-Zagreus who comes from the underworld therefore didn’t know what a bird was.

Previously I’ve discussed the real-life inspirations for all fish Pokémon, all other aquatic Pokémon, and all starter Pokémon. Now I’m going to cover all of the legendary and mythical Pokémon. I’ll be going through each generation on its own, so strap in, this is gonna take a while.
Generation 1 starts with our first legendary trio; the legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Uniquely among legendaries, they have regional variants in the form of Galarian Articuno, G Zapdos, and G Moltres. The Galarian versions have less lore than the originals, who are considered heralds of the season of winter (Articuno), spring (Zapdos), and summer (Moltres). While some legendary and mythical Pokémon are definitely unique beings, it seems possible that the legendary birds may have populations and enough diversity for a group to become genetically isolated in Galar and diverge from their counterparts in other regions over many generations. Alternatively, the similarity of the original and Galarian birds may be a coincidence and they are actually unrelated. The birds are all based on different legendary bird creatures in mythological traditions from around the world and on real bird species.
Articuno is the one that’s hardest to pin down to a specific real-life myth. It seems to be more of an original creation made to fill in the trio as compared to Zapdos and Moltres having very distinct mythological bases. That being said, it could draw inspiration from a few myths of more benevolent birds who live on mountains, including the Persian simurgh and Chinese fenghuang. In terms of real birds, it most closely resembles the white-throated magpie-jay, which shares the light blue and white coloration and the three-pointed head crest of Articuno.
Tumblr media
(image id: a white-throated magpie-jay. It is a songbird with a light blue back and wings and a white face and underbelly. A black line goes around its neck. It has a medium-length pointy beak. A tuft of blue feathers comes from its head)
Its long tail feathers look like those of a male resplendent quetzal, but blue instead of green.
Tumblr media
(image id: a male resplendent quetzal. It is a bird with bright green feathers and a red underbelly. Its tail feathers are exceptionally long and white and green)
Interestingly, both of those species live in central America. Galarian Articuno is still fairly similar to the original and probably has the same real life birds as a basis. Its facial feathers also look like a masquerade mask. The mythical bird Galarian Articuno is based on is a cockatrice, an English monster that is a hybrid of rooster and retile. G Articuno can fire a beam from its eyes that paralyzes enemies and the cockatrice had the power to petrify other beings by (depending on which version of the legend you’re listening to) touching, breathing on, or looking at a target.
Tumblr media
(image id: a cockatrice carking on a window. It looks like a dragon with a long, thick tail, bird-like hind limbs, a pair of bat-like wings, and the head of a rooster)
Zapdos’s mythological basis is the thunderbird, originating from a legends shared by many Native American cultural groups of North America. The thunderbird is a giant bird who brings storms, with some versions of the legend saying that the beat of its wings creates thunder and lightning flashes from its eyes. The thunderbird is usually viewed positively, as a symbol of strength.
Tumblr media
(image id: a totem pole, the top of which features a carving of a thunderbird. It is a highly stylistic depiction of an eagle with black and white wings and a large head and large, curved beak)
By contrast, another mythical bird associated with lighting that may also have inspired Zapdos is the Zulu impundulu or lightning bird, which is considered a monster. These birds were born when lighting strikes the ground and had magical powers and a thirst for blood. This certainty fits Zapdos’s violent nature more than the Thunderbird does. As for real birds, I initially thought of some kind of crane or stork, but between its long beak, short wings, and violent nature actually points to a hummingbird of all things. Yeah, hummingbirds are pretty violent. When you need to eat 2-3 times your weight in nectar every day you’ll end up having to fight over flowers just to survive. In fact, hummingbirds are so violent that the Aztecs associated them with Huitzilopochtli, god of war and the sun.
Tumblr media
(image id: an Allen's hummingbird. It is a very small bird with a long, skinny beak. Its head and most of its body are a dull orange color. Part of its chest is white and its throat is red. Its wings are in motion and obscured by motion blur)
Galarian Zapdos is a ratite. Ratites are a group of primitive flightless birds that include ostritches, emus, and cassowaries among others. G Zapdos’s long beak points it toward one particular ratite: the kiwi. Yeah, Zapdos likes to be a badass version of now very intimidating birds. G Zapdos fighting mainly with kicks is fitting as most ratites are capable of delivering very powerful kicks. Its speed references roadrunners, who can fly but are faster while running. As far as I can tell, G Zapdos isn’t based on any myths.
Tumblr media
(image id: a kiwi standing in grass. It is a small bird with a round, brown body and no visible wings. Its head is small, round, and brown. It has a long, skinny beak)
Moltres is based on mythical flaming birds like the phoenix, firebird, and the vermillion bird. The phoenix appears in Greek mythology and is an immortal bird that dies in fire and is reborn from its own ashes. The phoenix may have been inspired by the older Egyptian god Bennu, a god of the sun, creation, and rebirth that appeared as a bird. The firebird features in Slavic folklore where it either glows like fire or is actually on fire. It can be a harbinger of both good and bad luck, like how Moltres heralds the coming of summer but can also start wildfires.
Tumblr media
(image: a painting of the firebird by Boris Zvorykin. The bird is similar in appearance to a peacock, with a long neck and a head with three feathers rising from it as a crest. The tail is long and features many eyespots. The whole bird is red and orange, making it look like it is made of fire. It holds a fruit on one foot. The background is a castle behind some trees)
The vermillion bird is one of the four symbols of Chinese mythology, legendary animals that are associated with cardinal directions and constellations. The vermillion bird represents south and the element of fire in the Taoist five elements. It is said to look like a red pheasant that is cloaked in flame. In terms of real birds, Moltres’s long beak and neck makes it look like a heron.
Tumblr media
(image: a gray heron. It is a large bird with a grey and black body and wings. Its legs are long and orange. Its neck is as long as its body. The neck and head a re white and it has black above the eyes. Its beak is long, pointy, and orange. It is standing on the ground in a marsh)
Herons are associated with wetlands, a bit ironic for a firebird like Moltres. Galarian Moltres mostly just looks like the edgelord version of Moltres, but its new beak shape makes it look like a cormorant. Another aquatic bird for the fire birdy. Its ability to inflict exhaustion seems to be a pun on the phycological condition of burnout. Like G Zapdos, G Moltres doesn’t seem to be based on any particular mythological bird other than an evil phoenix or the darker aspects of the firebird.
Finishing out gen I is the Mew duo consisting of Mew and Mewtwo. Fun fact: the reason why Mewtwo comes before Mew in the Pokedex is that Mew was originally not going to be present at all, but some last-minute data cleanup freed up enough space to fit a new Pokémon in. There was not enough time to make a way to encounter it, so it became the first mythical Pokémon when special events were set up to give it out. And so a tradition was started that meant if you weren’t in the right place at the right time, it became impossible to actually catch ‘em all.
Mew is based on an embryo in reference to evolutionary developmental biology or evo devo. This is the field of study that examines development in different organisms to infer their evolutionary relationship. One method of doing this is comparing embryological development. By examining how embryos develop you can infer some things about that species’ history. For example, because human embryos develop a tail and then reabsorb it, it can be inferred that our ancestors had tails. You can also compare the embryos of two separate organisms to get an idea of when their ancestors diverged by seeing when their embryological development changes. For example, the embryos of mammals and reptiles stay similar for longer than the embryos of mammals and fish. This can tell us that mammals and reptiles diverged from each other more recently than either diverged from fish.
Tumblr media
(image id: a scientific diagram showing the embryological development of multiple species of vertebrate at different stages. The depiscted species are a fish, a salamander, a turtle, a bird, and some kind of mammal. The diagram points out similar features in the earliest stages: gill slits, tails, and eyes. Source)
One of the earliest versions of this science came from the scientist Ernst Haeckle’s idea that ontology recapitulates phylogeny. He studied embryos and noticed that the embryos of more similar animals diverge later than those of less similar animals. He thought that an embryo would pass through all the stages of its ancestors. For example, he thought that a mammal embryo would become a fish, then become and amphibian, then become a reptile, before finally becoming a mammal. He was incorrect, but wasn’t that far off and his ideas helped pave the way for evo devo as a field. Mew allegedly being the ancestor of all Pokémon makes it the Pokémon world’s last universal common ancestor. LUCA in real life was a unicellular organism that gave rise to all current life. LUCA wasn’t necessarily the only thing alive at its time. Other organisms likely existed but their descendants died out while LUCA’s descendants survived. Mew could also be the first universal common ancestor, which would make it the first living organism from which all others diverged, both those who survived and those who went extinct. It weird that the Pokémon world’s LUCA or FUCA is apparently a mammal while plenty of its descendants are not only not mammalian, many aren’t even vertebrates, aren’t even animals, or are inanimate objects or supernatural beings. Mew looks like a jerboa with its large hind legs and long tail, though its head looks like a cat’s.
Tumblr media
(image id: a jerboa standing on sand against a black background. It is a small mammal with a round body and a large head. Its hind legs are very long and hold it off the ground. Its forelimbs are very small and are held off the ground. Its tail is long and slender. Its fur is sandy on top and white on the underbelly)
It was confirmed in an interview that its name does not come from the English onomatopoeia for a cat sound. Mew was also designed as a simpler version of Mewtwo, an inverse of how it happened in-universe.
While the birds may be legendary Pokémon, Mewtwo is THE legendary Pokémon. Mewtwo retains many of the embryo characteristics of Mew, but it is much larger and appears more mature. This is due to its origin as a modified clone of Mew. It was modified using recombinant DNA. This occurs when methods such as CRISPR are used to insert gene sequences into a DNA strand to create new sequences that would not have occurred naturally. Because these gene sequences do not occur in nature, they can be used to produce artificially modified creatures such as goats that can produce spider silk proteins in their milk or cats that glow in the dark. DNA recombination is mostly over my head as I don’t know much about genetics, but as the technology improves, we will start seeing some potentially world-changing new technologies and organisms and will have to face some tough decisions about what the technology should and should not be used for. Mewtwo being so powerful and violent points to stories where genetic engineering is used to create monsters. Think Stories like Biohazard (AKA Resident Evil) where genetic engineering is used to make undead and mutates monstrosities or Star Trek, where genetically-engineered supermen battled for supremacy in the eugenics wars. Genetic engineering being played for horror more than it is played for good in fiction. This leans over to real life where genetically engineered crops are helping combat starvation worldwide yet are demonized as frankenfoods. Interestingly, the note you can find about Mewtwo says that Mew gave birth to it. This is closer to real-life cloning where cloned animals are born normally. In all other depictions, Mewtwo goes with the common fictional depiction of cloning where it is born as an adult in a tube. Mewtwo also drawn from stories of aliens, especially the common grey alien, which are often depicted as being psychic. This grey alien origin is more prominent in mega Mewtwo Y. Y also takes more after Mew in being more embryo-like and I think it might also draw from the starchild in 2001: a Space Odyssey. Mega Mewtwo X goes the other direction and appears to be more mature than the original, with increased musculature.

Some APH Australia headcanons because we released the Kookaburra and he's doing fine.
-----------------------------------------
APH Australia is a volunteer firie (firefighter). His ringtone is either Nutbush City Limits or Land Down Under. He can barbecue just about anything. He goes flood-surfing out bush. He's got a Wildlife Rehabilitation permit. He can perform the Nutbush backwards without the music. He knows several Eshays. He's got a small hole in the left side of his head from a Magpie. He's seen a Yowie, a Bunyip and the Hawkesbury River Monster. He has scars from wattle branches on his arms. He smells like wattles and either rain or bushfire depending on the season. He has four freckles arranged in the southern cross on his arm. His freezers and pantry and fridge are always stocked to the nines in case of flooding (or fires. Or anything else, really).

ummm lots of emojis for magpie duh, 💤 🥞 🍧 🍁 ☀️ 🌌 🪤 ✂️ 💡 🔧 🚆 💙💚
💤 do they fall asleep easily? what helps them sleep?
oh yeah he's an easy sleeper, made even easier when he's got someone to hold onto, be it lupo, lekthi, or one of his other friends. hell, give him a pillow or stuffed animal to hug and it has the same effect. he just sleeps 10x better when hes cuddling
🥞 what is their comfort breakfast?
well, there are plenty of breakfasts he really likes, but his comfort one would have to be chocolate chip pancakes. theyre so simple but so cozy and sweet
🍧 do they still have any objects from their childhood? what significance does it have to them? what would their reaction be if they lost it?
i dont think magpie has anything that's super significant to him, but he definitely does have a LOT of old stuff, mostly cause he doesnt really throw things out. hes not a hoarder, it just doesnt occur to him that he should throw things away, cause he's never really had to clean any of it. theres all types of junk in his room, from toys and notebooks to actual literal junk that his ravens brought him. i dont think he'd even notice if something went missing!
honestly i feel bad for lekthi because magpie will probably start filling the guy's home with random stuff he finds too. theyre gonna need to have a sit down about only keeping important things
🍁 what is their favourite season? why?
i think he genuinely loves every season. each of them are special for their own individual reasons. if he HAD to pick though, i think he'd pick spring, both for what it represents, and because it's a rainy season. he absolutely loves going outside when its raining and jumping around like he's never seen rain before sgdfhjdsf
☀️ are they a morning person? what is the first thing they do in the morning?
sort of? he likes getting up early, but he's usually very slow to actually wake up. funny enough, the first thing he does is usually look for something to eat, even though he hasn't even washed the sleep out of his eyes yet
🌌 what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?
youtube
THIS song is the reason magpie is here today. it's basically his theme, and the singer, vitas, is also his voiceclaim. the music video being about a fish guy is kinda funny though because magpie originally started as a human, so its actually MORE fitting for fantroll magpie
anyways, the first thing i decided about him is that he would be unapologetically himself, no matter how much it inconvenienced or even hurt other people. it was weirdly a joint effort between me and my old therapist, cause i was extremely ashamed of and overly apologetic about essentially everything about myself, including the mere fact that i existed. magpie could go to extremes in a way that i could and would never, and it genuinely did help me be more okay with... like. existing, taking up space, and yes sometimes even inconveniencing others
not to get overly vulnerable on a silly little ask meme, but magpie helped me in a really significant way, and he means a lot to lil ol me <3
🪤 - what will always lure them into certain danger? a loved one in danger? a promise of something they are always searching for?
i mean, magpie would happily walk straight into certain danger without prompting anyways, since he's got like... a way different metric for what's dangerous than everyone else. so honestly, giving him any sort of reason or incentive is overkill. if you point to a pit of spikes and say 'you should go there' i think he wouldn't be like 'you know that DOES sound fun'
✂️ what is the "last straw" for them to cut someone out of their life? how easily do they let go of people?
it really depends how long he's known someone, and how close they've gotten. for newer friends, magpie will quite literally cut them out of his life (like with some actual scissors snip snip) as soon as they stop being interesting or fun to have around, or as soon as the killing urge takes him over
for people who have managed to stick around long enough to become dear to him, i dont really think there's much that'll make him drop you. except like, if he wins when he's making one of his regular attempts on their life, but then he'd be extremely depressed to see them go :(
💡 is your oc a planner? do they write down every small detail or just wing it?
he plans out things like his performances very meticulously, but for basically everything else, he's spontaneous and unpredictable. it's in his nature to just go where the wind takes him
🔧 are they good at fixing relationships? or do they tend to avoid doing so?
id like to think he is. he's very intent on finding what the problem is and doing his best to either fix it or find a workable compromise. and even if there's no good solution, he's a very emotionally available person and will absolutely hear someone out and sympathize with their plight. in my experience, its kind of hard to stay upset with someone who is that good at communicating and genuinely just wants everyone involved to be happy
🚆 what is their answer to the trolley problem?
i think hes just happy he gets to be in the metaphorical trolley. i dont think he even realizes its an ethical puzzle, like you'd ask him what he'd do and he'd just be like 'hm... can i make it go faster?'
💙 do they miss their s/o easily? how do they act when their s/o isn't around?
weeeeell he technically doesnt have a s/o, but we both know he treats lupo and lekthi like he's dating them so i'll answer with them in mind
i think he's pretty good at entertaining himself, but that he still doesnt really like being alone. he tends to miss lekthi and lupo, as well as everyone else important to him, in the off-chance they're not around. when he's on his own, he'll usually take the opportunity to get something done that might be harder when he's around people, like reading, writing, or practicing music. still, he's a social butterfly, and will typically find a way to at least be in the same space as someone he cares about, even if they're not actively engaging with one another
💚 what things make your oc feel comforted? hugs, kisses, food?
i think he's less comforted by specific actions, and more comforted by just... general effort put towards him. if you show him you care in your own way, no matter what way that is, he'll probably be very comforted. any and all love languages will make him so comfy cozy because to him, the intent matters more than anything else in a situation like that

I like birds a lot, especially pigeons. I went to the uk for a few weeks this summer and the time that i spent in London/ Edinbrurgh i noticed how nice the pigeons are??? Like in the states we have very aggressive pidgins. They are so mean and if you are eating food they will actively attempt to take your food while you are eating it. But the London pigeons will just wait around you like “coo coo hi when you leave im gonna eat whatever crumbs you left :D coo coo” while the new york there like “COO COO MF GIMME SUM OF THAT HOT WEINER OR IM TAKIN IT FROM U COO COO” and its such a noticeable difference!
Tumblr media
look at how mean these guys are. Im villianising the United States pigeons.
On another note, the uk has no sparrows!!! Or chickadees!!! And that makes me extremely sad!!! They just don’t live there :( !!! Since i am the most touristy tourist out there i was eating outside a bunch and always at these spots there are little sparrows hopping around on the ground eating little crumbs off of picnic tables or taking loose chips off the ground. But they don’t live in the uk?? Im not sure about the rest of Europe as I haven’t been but its very sad to me. The sparrows have been replaced with seagulls!! These giant, loud birds are the ones invading your picnics.
Here is what a sparrow looks like for all the people who have never had the pleasure of meeting one.
Tumblr media
The amount of seagulls in Edinbrurgh is absolutely insane. We rented a flat off of Air b&b for about a week and it was right off the royal mile, like we were on the intersection between the royal mile and St. Mary’s street. Whenever the sun was up, seagull’s would always be swooping up and down the streets, squaking like there life depended on it. Why are there so many seagulls? Portobello is kinda far away?? And why are they so loud!!! On the East cost of the usa, they squak a bit and they are extremely agro. I was on the beach eating a sandwich and one swooped down and stole the whole sandwich. And no, the seagulls of Edinburgh are not like that. But they are so loud??? For what???
This is the part where i would add and image of a seagull but it wont let me.
ALSO LAST THING!! THEY HAVE MAGPIES!!! A LOT OF THEM!!! AND THAT ADDS LIKE 30 EXTRA POINTS CAUSE MAGPIES ARE GREAT (WHEN ITS NOT SWOOPING SEASON) AND A LOT A LOT OF SWANS IN SCOTLAND
anyway here was my full rundown on the birds of the british isles.

Spatial Cognition
Arthropod navigation: Ants, bees, crabs, spiders, finding their way, Cheng (2012)
Corvid caching. The role of cognition, De Kort, Emery, & Clayton (2012)
Spatial inference without a cognitive map: the role of higher-order path integration, Bouchekioua, Y., Blaisdell, A. P., Kosaki, Y., Tsutsui-Kimura, I., Craddock, P., Mimura, M., & Shigeru, W. (2021)
In the chapter “Arthropod navigation: ants, bees, crabs, spiders finding their way” by Cheng (2012)*, the diverse navigation mechanisms employed by species such as ants, bees, crabs, and spiders in their environments are explored. The chapter covers four main topics: integration, route behavior, landmark usage, and map-like navigational behavior. It emphasizes the significance of place-finding servomechanisms in navigation, of where a system aims towards a specified target place. Path integration is also discussed, as well as the limitations arising from error accumulation during their journeys. The concept of global vectors and search patterns, particularly in ants, is explained, illustrating how an ant's initial straight run home, based on the global vector, is complemented by a search system to improve accuracy. The role of sensory mechanisms like the sky-compass and odometry in determining direction and distance is explored, along with the integration of landmarks and beacons into navigation strategies. The passage also delves into the learning aspect of path integration, emphasizing the need for metric information from outbound journeys and the potential role of working memory in this one-trial learning process.
Furthermore, the discussion covers route following, where the inaccuracies of the global vector are addressed by breaking the journey into shorter segments guided by local vectors and sensorimotor vectors. The use of panoramic landmarks and landmark-based image matching is explored, showcasing how ants and bees reduce discrepancies between visual images to navigate effectively. The chapter also touches on the debate between map-based and route-based navigation, suggesting that arthropods may employ a combination of both mechanisms. The overarching conclusion emphasizes the widespread use of various navigation strategies in arthropods and outlines experiments mimicking their natural habitats for a realistic understanding of their navigational abilities. Finally, the chapter suggests that path integration requires metric encoding and emphasizes the role of multiple memories, retrieved based on contextual cues, in guiding arthropods through their journeys.
-
The chapter "Corvid Caching: The Role of Cognition" by De Kort, Emery, & Clayton (2012)* explores the cognitive aspects of food caching behavior in birds, focusing primarily on the corvidae (ravens, crows, magpies) and paridae (tits, chickadees) families. Food caching, a naturally occurring behavior, is considered in the context of cognitive abilities such as episodic-like memory, future planning, and social cognition. The study emphasizes the influence of environmental conditions on caching strategies, exemplified by the increased efficiency of Alaskan black-capped chickadees in harsh winters. The chapter delves into the decision-making processes involved in caching, covering factors such as what, when, and where to cache. Corvids exhibit varying caching propensities and recovery behaviors, with species differences linked to fluctuations in food availability depending on the season and ecological conditions.
Social aspects of caching are also explored, highlighting the strategies used by birds to prevent cache pilfering. The potential for pilfering and the dynamics of living in social groups introduce additional cognitive dimensions to caching behavior. The chapter addresses the question of whether caching reflects prospective cognition, delving into experiments with scrub jays that suggest a dual-process model involving both a compulsion to cache and flexible behavior influenced by past caching experiences. The discussion extends to the cognitive mechanisms involved in cache recovery, emphasizing the role of spatial memory, episodic-like memory, and social strategies. The authors argue for an evolutionary perspective in understanding cognitive abilities, considering the phylogenetic relationships among species, and challenging hypotheses about adaptive specialization in brain size related to ecological demands. Overall, the chapter stresses the importance of an evolutionary approach in studying comparative cognition, especially in the context of complex behaviors like food caching in corvids.
-
The article "Spatial inference without a cognitive map: the role of higher-order path integration" by Bouchekioua et al. (2021) challenges the traditional cognitive map model for route planning. It introduces the concept of Higher-Order Path Integration (HOPI) as an alternative mechanism for spatial inference. The cognitive map model suggests that animals create mental representations of their environment for flexible navigation. However, the article argues that first-order path integration, which relies on direct experience and sensory stimuli, is insufficient to explain novel route taking observed in experiments where path integration is neutralized.
The authors propose HOPI as a new model that combines higher-order conditioning and path integration. HOPI involves vector arithmetic, where vectors representing spatial relationships are stored in memory and combined through common elements. This process allows animals to mentally connect places that have never been directly linked during navigation. The model suggests that animals anchor vectors to external cues and use higher-order conditioning to integrate them, resulting in the formation of higher-order vectors connecting familiar places. In suggesting HOPI, the article highlights three experiments supporting spatial inference without direct path integration. In pigeons and rats, the animals demonstrated the ability to choose novel routes even when path integration was prevented. The proposed HOPI model provides a theoretical framework to explain these observations, emphasizing the role of stored vectors and their integration through conditioning and path integration, challenging some traditional cognitive mapping theories.
My thoughts
While reading about navigation behavior in arthropods, mammals, and birds, I can’t help but consider these mechanisms in reptiles as well. Specifically, I wonder how reptiles’ ectothermy would affect servomechanistic processes, as endotherms can afford to expense more movement whereas ectotherms must be more particular with their movements? If endotherms can, in terms of energy expenditure, afford to make more potential mistakes, would reptiles, perhaps, have evolved more efficient servomechanistic processes than endotherms? That being said, however, I’m sure escape and foraging behaviors have also led to other adapt navigation processes to develop in endotherms as well. I personally have worked in studying navigation behavior in leopard geckos, and observation for even just one minute would show the drastic difference in the amount of movement in geckos as opposed to the pigeons (birds) and rats (mammals) that I have also worked with closely. I wonder how these thermoregulatory mechanisms have impacted adaptations of servomechanistic processes involved in reptilian movements and, consequently, their navigational strategies? Would they be exclusive to homing species (e.g., sea turtles)?
Moreover, would HOPI also be applicable to reptile navigation? Consider this scenario:
In the morning, a lizard starts at its burrow where it is quite safe from predators, represented by place A. Throughout the day, it moves in a particular direction and distance in hunting insects for food, creating a vector A->B. Later in the day, the lizard must find a hiding place from a predator, creating another vector B->C. To return to its safe burrow A, the lizard adds the vectors A->B and B->C, resulting in A->C, and symmetrically, C->A?
Although their learning capabilities are not thought to be as nearly cognitively developed as mammals and birds, I wonder if reptiles could show evidence of HOPI in a similarly developed task as suggested by Bouchekioua et al. (2021). That is, would HOPI just be applicable to mammals and birds, or would the phylogeny between birds and reptiles also suggest that reptiles could show evidence of HOPI if tested in a systematically varied way?
Turtles have been found to be able to navigate to a goal using visual cues in a place task using an arm maze (see Lopez et al. (2000)), so they must use visual landmarks to navigate in some capacity (at least when it is all that is available to them). That being said, as optic flow is a crucial factor in visually-dominant avian species, do reptiles also use optic flow as a prominent sensory input for spatial orientation and movement control? Would the reliance on visual cues and sensory inputs for navigation vary significantly between ectothermic reptiles and endothermic birds? I’m assuming, of course, this would also vary depending on reptile species as well.

Theres like. So much to learn in history & having adhd makes it hard so i have to pair it with like. A podcast or something to focus but it has grown on me recently too. Wish i could say the same of geography. Cool teachers are the lifeblood of learning i had so many cool science teachers. Thanks! Wolfie & kafka are my other goals of characters to get where i dont have them. Ive just been trying to catch up on the story & finally finished the luofu story. Building characters for me is just yeah this works i dont focus so hard on it anymore. No time for all that. I used arctic fox purple dye which allowed me to not have to bleach my hair so maybe thats an option? Im so ready for furina i have like. 335 wishes ready. I like team building in star rail its more. Relaxed than in genshin it feels like. Pela stays because her debuff is so helpful especially on the luofu. Bye pesky mara struck revival buff. May the courage to wear your choker in public come to you. I have & get compliments when i do. & may the future bring still easy exams for you

Whitewater Rafting Adventure
Tumblr media
The 13 Best Whitewater Rafting Destinations In The World
Whitewater rafting is one of the most popular activities in the United States. People of all ages and experiences usually find navigating exciting whitewater rapids and bouncing about the spurting waves and river rocks thrilling. It isn't surprising that an increasing number of outfitters online offer advice on the best rafting locations. Sadly, such an abundance of advice from numerous outfitters who care more about selling a season ticket can make advising you on the best rafting rivers challenging, especially if you're beginning your whitewater rafting adventure. This article will show where to experience some of the best Whitewater Rafting trips in the world!
Colorado River Through the Grand Canyon, USA
The Colorado River runs 226 miles through Utah and Arizona and features a great view of the Grand Canyon from the Colorado River. While on this river trip, you can do hikes on waterfalls and visit the ancient Navajo ruins and side grottos of the lava canyon. As part of its attractions, it has enormous rapids and some excellent campsites. Some companies run half-day, one-day, three-day, or even eighteen-day trips on the Grand Canyon, depending on your schedule and physicality. You can go on a river trip almost any time of the year, but the best time to go whitewater rafting is from May to September. Be careful to choose a period that would allow you to spend more time at the Grand Canyon and allow you to explore. You can also choose which medium you want to employ as you can choose between paddle rafts or oar rafts, motorized and dories!
Prospect Canyon, Arizona
The Lava Falls Prospect Canyon runs through the Grand Canyon, where you can enjoy hiking, see the fantastic landscapes of Northern Arizona, and even go horse riding. At Lava Falls, the river through the middle fork of the Grand Canyon plunges over a cliff with a grade X rapid about 37 feet deep. Although these grand rapids could be terrifying, once you can work through your fears, you will easily enjoy the Beach at the endpoint of the Lava Fall!
Magpie River, Canada
The Lava Falls Prospect Canyon runs through the Grand Canyon, where you can enjoy hiking, see the fantastic landscapes of Northern Arizona, and even go horse riding. At Lava Falls, the river through the middle fork of the Grand Canyon plunges over a cliff with a grade X rapid about 37 feet deep. Although these grand rapids could be terrifying, once you can work through your fears, you will easily enjoy the Beach at the endpoint of the Lava Fall!
Magpie River, Canada
When you visit the Magpie River, you can see wildlife and secluded and ancient forests when you raft down the river. If you are up for it, you also experience intense rapids like whirlpools, Picket Fence Rapids, and even the George Camp. It flows from the Labrador Plateau to the Saint Lawrence River in Canada. The Magpie River graces you with the beautiful Magpie Falls and the wonders of the aurora borealis. The trip starts at Magpie Lake and ends in a Grade V rapid at Magpie Falls. It is one of the prettiest rivers to explore while rafting, and the experience is breathtaking!
Zambezi River, Zimbabwe
The Zambezi River is found in Zimbabwe and starts just below Victoria Falls. Within a 15-mile stretch, the river boasts some 23 rapids, and you even get to see wildlife, such as hippopotamuses and crocodiles, along the river. The river distance stretches between the narrow walls of Batoka Gorge through Grade IV and V rapids, such as the Gnashing Jaws of Death. Trips start at the world's largest waterfall, which is Victoria Falls. You can book a trip here for a day trip or half a day. Some tours could last up to a week or eight days!
Rio Pacuare, Costa Rica
Rio Pacuare goes through Costa Rica's Indian Reservation, a pristine rainforest where you will see leopards, monkeys, jaguars, and birds with some luck. It also features a waterfall flowing into the river through class III and IV rapids for 29km. You get to enjoy and experience rapids such as Pinball or Terciopelo Snake. Suppose you opt for multi-day trips to Rio Pacuare in Costa Rica. In that case, you will enjoy the serenity of nature with its eco jungle lodges!
Salmon River, Idaho
Salmon river is sometimes called the river of no return and is the longest-flowing undammed river in the United States. The river drops over 7,000 feet as it flows through scenic routes such as the Galena Summit in Sawtooth National Recreational Area. The middle fork of the salmon river is considered a crown jewel of wide and scenic rivers. The area is one of the most popular rafting rivers in the world due to a section of the river called the Main fork of the salmon river. You also be treated to the views and complex geology of Salmon canyon (some of the deepest canyons in the United States). You can engage in activities such as rafting trips, hiking, and some plane rides!
Rio Upano River, Ecuador
The rafting trip through the Rio Upano River is a wonderful one to participate in, paired with the excellent views of the Andes Mountains in South America. The locals call the river The Godzilla as the waves can go up to 15 feet high, and the river's swift flow makes it an incredible challenge for adventurers when rafting. Something else to look out for is the beautiful scenery and impressive waterfalls on both sides!
Gauley River, West Virginia
West Virginia is known as the "raft capital of the world," as Whitewater rafting is one of the most popular recreational activities there. The river is 25 miles of rugged terrain with over 100 rapids, huge waves, and a steep gradient. The Gauley offers tremendous class III to V+ drops and rocky routes. The Pillow Rapid on the Gauley River is a class V rapid with a fast-flowing river regarded as the finest and most adventurous rafting river in West Virginia. The Gauley is one of the best rafting trips you could take!
Karnali River, Nepal
The best time to experience the Karnali River in Nepal is in mid-October. The river is Nepal's longest and largest waterway and originates at snowy Mount Kailash. The scenery surrounding the river includes dense jungle, lush greenery, towering Himalayan peaks, and beautiful beaches. These features are why the region is known as the Holy House. The Karnali has mostly class III rapids, but some parts could be of class IV quality, making it one of the best rafting rivers in the world. Karnali boasts great rapids, such as Jailhouse Rock, God's House, Juicer, etc!
Chilko River, British Columbia
Chilko River is diverse in its enormous stretches of class IV Whitewater currents. The river is a 75-kilometer-long river in the Chilcotin District of British Columbia, Canada, and drops from an altitude of 3,000 feet from a dense mountain forest to a silty desert canyon. The rafting expedition takes you through narrow canyons, alpine forests, high desert plateaus, and sky-scraping hoodoos. The Chilko River is flawless, with clear visibility to about 20 feet, and offers a good river rafting experience!
Chattooga River, Georgia
The Chattooga River originates from the mountains of Western North Carolina; it runs 57 miles from North Carolina into Georgia and South Carolina. The river offers fantastic scenery ranging from twisting rock-choked channels to narrow, cliff-enclosed deep pools with thundering falls. You will find sacred waterfalls surrounding dense forests and underdeveloped shorelines characteristic of nature. The rapid current of Chattooga is class II to class IV quality and is famous for its Bull Sluice rapid and dramatic falls that pump adrenaline into you!
Tuolumne River, California
The Tuolumne River offers 16-18 miles of class IV to V rapids bound to give you an adrenaline rush. The huge rapids and big waves of this river are demanding and spaced at close intervals making a recovery for adventurers more difficult. Tuolumne boasts over 40 named rapids that are fast, big, and cold in the early season. In later summer, they are trickier and more frequent. Clavey Falls is something to experience on the Tuolumne River as the excitement comes non-stop as the river winds down and drops through granite boulder fields!

The surrounding river boasts waterfalls, basalt cliffs, and canyons. The trip usually takes four days to experience the breathtaking scenery and exhilarating rafting adventure!

Man Utd transfer roundup Memphis Depay domino effect as Scott McTominay position confirmed
Manchester United are busy scouring Europe in search of signings this winter amid a move for Wout Weghorst from Burnley with a wide range of players linked with both an arrival and an exit from Old Trafford
Manchester United appear set to continue their busy January transfer window with a few moves having already been made.
The Red Devils have sealed the services of Jack Butland on loan until the end of the campaign, while they have also agreed to bring Dutch striker Wout Weghorst to Old Trafford for the next few months. It remains to be seen if any more arrivals follow the pair becoming Red Devils.
That being said, here are the latest rumors to come out of Old Trafford over the past 24 hours, with the window now open for two weeks.
Tumblr media
Newcastle take McTominay decision Newcastle United have reportedly taken the decision not to pursue a loan deal for United midfielder Scott McTominay. The Scot has been linked with a move to St James’ Park in January, with the Magpies keen to bolster their options at the center of the park as they continue their bid for a Champions League place.
When asked if his side had made a bid for McTominay, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was quick to dismiss the claims out of hand. As quoted by the Manchester Evening News, he said: “No it’s not true [bidding for McTominay]. The loan market is always a big option for us. But I think it’s very difficult to loan out. the right player.”
The 26-year-old has made 21 appearances for the Red Devils this season, but just under half of those outings have been departures.
Elanga’s future depends on Depay Man Utd’s approach to Anthony Elanga’s short-term future at Old Trafford appears to hinge on whether they have a replacement striker – most likely ex-Red Devil Memphis Depay. United have been linked with a move for the Dutchman this window alongside Arsenal.
According to talkSPORT, if the Barcelona star arrives at Old Trafford in January, it could lead to Anthony Elanga leaving the club on loan. The young Swede has been linked with a loan move to Premier League rivals Everton.
Elanga has seen opportunities with United dwindle this season after making just seven starts in all competitions under Erik ten Hag.
While Elanga could leave, a member of the current squad could stay who previously seemed hopeless. Right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been linked with moves to Wolves and Crystal Palace.
However, after earning a place in the squad in recent weeks, he now looks set to stay. According to MailPlus, Wan-Bissaka is set to stay with the club after Ten Hag was impressed with his performance.
The Dutchman now thinks he has a real alternative to the injured Diogo Dalot.

Amanda Staveley's response to what Pif will judge a success for Newcastle United this season
Amanda Staveley’s response to what Pif will judge a success for Newcastle United this season
What will constitute success for Eddie Howe’s team this season in the eyes of both the co-owner of Newcastle United and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Amanda Staveley? If Newcastle United can be considered a success this season will depend on improvements “across the board”. The Magpies presently occupy the tenth spot in the Premier League after being defeated at home by Bournemouth for…

Elevator pitch for platformer
Title: ‘The journey of a magpie!’
Description: This game would feature a story surrounding a juvenile magpie (Prickles) and her journey to find new territory after being kicked out by her parents. The goal of the game is to find a place for her to call home. Prickles will venture through many environments (levels) with different obstacles such as people, dogs, other magpies/birds. She will also be able to meet some other birds and by talking to them, get some worms or advice on a puzzle. Worms can also be used to for trading in a store for a customisable accessory. In the end of the game, she will find her new home.
Genre: Adventure platformer – player explores new areas, finding food, friends etc
Primary Mechanics or Mode of Gameplay: As this is a platformer, it will have all the basic platformer aspects, such as jumping, being able to attack enemies, platforms to jump on, some tricky level design as well as some npcs that the player can talk to. Prickles would be able to collect worms to eat (player gets points) and can use point amounts to trade in for different accessories to decorate the magpies with as well as trade to npcs for special advantages for the level. Throughout the levels, the aggression levels of Prickles will change depending on the season and/or obstacles in the way. During non-nesting (this would be indicated by the environment) seasons she would try to avoid enemies (humans/cars/birds) – the player doesn’t have the option to attack/get rid of obstacles, can only jump over them or find a way around. This is done to mirror how wondering juvenile magpies are when trying to find territory, they don’t want to get into fights or bring attention to themselves as it is likely that they will be attacked and hurt badly. With nowhere to go they will likely die. If the player gets hit by any of these enemies, they will lose health, a human and car will deal heavy damage, while birds will only do a little damage. In nesting months, the player can also pick up baby/younger magpies, allowing for Prickles to be able to both jump and attack to protect them. A normal attack would just be an animation of prickles swopping. A charged attack, which the player can only perform after attacks are charged up, will showing a cutscene of a magpie attacking (source from YouTube probably), looking like the objection scene out of Danganronpa. Another idea was to have birds follow the player around and attacking them as the player moves. Which causes the player to try and hurry, adding challenge to the game. Every worm collected will help the baby grown, and once its reached adulthood, it will fly off and the player will gain extra points and/or powerups such as moving faster for the rest of the level. The player will only be able to attack if they have a companion. If they don’t, Prickles will take the same amount of damage as mentioned before. If prickles has a baby and is able to attack but still gets hit, it will result in very heavy damage no matter what has hit her. Once Prickles has found pink coloured magpie, the level will change. This is because the pink magpie will tell the player that the territory is already occupied and to move on.
I think having my platformer revolve around a magpie’s journey will help to make it unique compared to other platformers. Many platformers have a goal of save a princess, defeating the bad guy or just wondering around to find objects, so I hope that the story surrounding my platformer will help it standout and be interesting for players. Gameplaywise, adding in all the ideas such as attacking during nesting season only and having a small companion also adds to uniqueness as it allows players to have different ways for them to play, maybe they just have a goal of unlocking all the accessories or trying to play without attacking etc.
I believe this game would be able to be made in GDevelop. It would just take some time to design all the levels and add in all the features.
How do you win or lose the game?: If the player makes it to the pink magpie every level, then they will eventually make it to the last level, which will just be filled with plants and no enemies. Then text will appear indicating that prickles has found her home. There could possibly be a cut scene to show her in a few years’ time with her partner and kids. If the player dies on a level and loses all health, they will get text saying prickles died and will have to restart the game from the beginning. This time it will refer to Prickles as Prickles 2.0 etc depending on how many times the player has died. This would frustrate a lot of players; however, it would make sense in terms of magpies as they do not get second chances in their life.
Setting/Style: The overall style of the game will be like Omori, with a slightly pixelated style and pastel type colours. See below images:
Tumblr media
reference: https://gamedom.eu/games/omori-walkthrough-gameplay-guide-part-sixty/
Tumblr media
reference: https://otosection.com/omori-demo-gameplay/
This was chosen as I think an unrealistic looking world would make sense from a perspective of a magpie who has spent her whole life in one small street, looking at the same environment all day. Having it change to look super odd as it goes along would add to the idea that prickles is super excited to see a new world and that she is filled with wonder. I was thinking level one would start off as just a normal green place with streets and people, and as prickles ventures further along, the environment gets more colourful and weirder, with colours present above. Prickles will look like a normal juvenal magpie (picture to the left below). As the levels go on, she could gain little highlights of some pastel colours. The image on the right below is rough and made in word, however, the little purple highlights kind of show what I want.
Tumblr media
Audience or Demographics: The audience would most likely be people interested in the platformer genre such as people who liked Hollow Knight as well as people who like animal games. However, the appeal of playing as a small creature might be able to get some of the people who enjoyed stray to play this game. As even though they are in different genre, they both have a cute little animal going on a world exploring adventure. People who enjoyed the bright aesthetics of Omori might also like this game. This game might be enjoyed by both people who aren’t really into games as well. This is because it is only a simple platformer which would make it easier for someone who doesn’t play a lot of games to get into.

Collingwood Reclink Photo Opportunity (Collingwood, 2022)
What the PR Activity is that they are Analysing?
This public relations campaign is through Collingwood Magpies posting on their website an article promoting the launch of their 2022 Reclink campaign. Reclink creates opportunities for individuals faced with homelessness, mental health issues, unemployment and drug or alcohol dependence. The article overall is promoting the launch of new season and aiming to gain interest for the season. Also including a photo opportunity with the article displaying some players.
Who is leading the campaign or who is involved?
The Collingwood Magpies are leading the campaign posting the article on their official website. Also, with the photo opportunity many players are involved in advertising for the season.
What are the major PR tools being used?
The major tool being used is the photo opportunity displaying a variety of players hopefully showing no matter who you are you can get involved which is the articles overall intent as well. They also have an ex-AFL player Daniel wells as an ambassador to help push the league.
Where they saw it and if/how they engaged with it?
You can see the article promoting the league and the new season of the Collingwood Magpies official website including the photo opportunity within the article. You are able to interact and share the article to help push awareness as well.
Critical Reflection:
The purpose of this public relations campaign was to spread awareness of the Reclink league and enable people who may be disadvantage an avenue to gain social connections, have fun etc.
This article proved effective in doing so along with the ambassador Daniel wells both showing and pushing the league in creating interest and awareness of it.
