I'm a 16 year old fucking trans communist whatever you know how it is and im also taking ap lang and it's so fucking funny reading your posts it's like woahhh a tumblr blogger is like she's just like me fr and not a 30 year old stoner or whatever but also some of your opinions suck so hard like i watched american psycho for the first time with some friends a few weeks ago and GOD that film sucked so hard like it just hammered it's point home into your fucking head throughout the whole runtime. The only one of us who thought it was good was the theater kid stoner who like to give a better picture of this guy a few days ago he told me he wanted to buy one of those French artist caps and wear it all of the time instead of a beanie. Also like while your music taste isn't bad per say you're just pretentious about it like the post where you said you were walking with your boyfriend and a random guy driving by said something about whatever classic rock band shirt you were wearing and you "just started walking faster" like that is down with cis bus level of story it's so fucking funny. Sorry I'm not trying to be rude it's just like it's funny to see a popularblogger being like a human being like just some kid like me. . Also don't give me shit about it being spelled per se I'm not a fucking ball sniffing French accepter. Oh also im the anon who told you to kill yourself over mushroom opinions. I'm trying to see a school social worker to get medicated I'm sorry

It’s me again, and I’ve got another ask for ya @comradekatara
And no stupid pol meme’s that I gave only a cursory glance too and stupidly screenshotted this time!
I’ve seen a few of your post (at least I think it was your’s) about LOK. So I was wondering. In regard to the main villains, who is your least favorite/most disliked?
And what would you change about their motivations and perhaps their “villainous” means to make them a more compelling and/or sympathetic character?
lol this is a pretty big ask. i mean basically every villain in lok is completely incoherent thematically, politically, ideologically. people will call amon a communist but he doesn’t actually give a shit about economics or class in any capacity. people call unalaq a theocrat but as far as im aware he isn’t exploiting people’s spiritual faith to gain power, (maybe that’s what he was doing at first, but) he literally wants to submerge the world into “darkness” for one million years for… reasons and purposes. unalaq/vaatu is by far the worst lok villain, but that’s not even saying much because it’s so patently ridiculous and cartoonish. the red lotus are actually compelling but they also love chaos for the sake of chaos (because anarchism!) and want to violently murder a teenage girl and hold a genocided people hostage to do so (despite zaheer’s supposed respect for air nomads). and kuvira is an ethnonationalist who declares herself emperor, so i guess she’s at least a somewhat coherent portrait of a real type of person who actually exists, but the fact that the fascist despot is the ONLY character who points out that republic city was built on colonized earth kingdom land is um….. not a great look?
and then side characters like tarrlok, hiroshi, varrick, queen hou-ting, suyin(???), wu(???) who aren’t really the primary villains even though in many ways they’re more ideologically coherent, are just also kind of weird for their ambiguous framing. like hou-ting is literally kidnapping airbenders and putting them in underground labor camps where they’re tortured and ruthlessly trained into forming an army, which is something that chaisee does in the yangchen novels and is regarded as utterly reprehensible and heinous for it (because it is), whereas we’re supposed to feel bad for hou-ting when she dies because murder is bad uwu. and we’re supposed to forgive hiroshi for [checks notes] attempted filicide. and varrick is just some fun wacky little guy who is a ruthlessly amoral capitalist but also he does the charleston! and isn’t him marrying his overworked, exploited assistant cute?? and not at all grossly misogynistic and horrifying???? LOL!
so i don’t think going through every villain and antagonist individually and imbuing them with depth is really a worthy use of time, since the show largely suffers from incoherence due to the fact that it isn’t cohesive at all. besides korra’s character development (which is excellent), there’s no real central idea that ties every season together. take atla instead: it’s a very linear narrative, with an established goal that is always being worked towards and once it’s ultimately completed, the show ends. lok has no idea what that central goal is. so instead of trying to fix every character, it’s better to work from the center out and first simply define that goal. the central political tension in lok is, fundamentally, a question of whether it is better to alter the status quo in various radical ways, or whether it is better to maintain the violently upheld hegemonic norm by virtue of it being the status quo (and spoiler alert, it’s the latter!). and these radical ways, whether it be the terrorist movement of a fraudulent right wing populist dictator, or the terrorist movement of a bunch of commies, is always presented as equally dangerous and in need of korra’s gaggle of cops, liberals, and capitalists to suppress. what a great show.
however, the lok that lives in my head does away with most of that, and simply focalizes the conflict between the white lotus and the red lotus as diametrically opposing forces both vying to control korra’s position in the world as avatar and reconstitute her legacy on their terms. because korra’s arc is fundamentally about learning to define her selfhood and her role in the world on her own terms, and the one commonality between every villain is that they’re trying to suppress or control her identity in some way. because it’s also, incidentally, a show primarily concerned with the value of identity politics, and doesn’t actually give a shit about any of the class struggles that underpin the show’s worldbuilding and inform so many of its primary characters. so while i’m not opposed to korra’s struggle of identity, and in fact appreciate it a lot and find it personally affirming in multiple ways, korra deserves a show that is actually worthy of her brilliance as a character.
it’s not that korra shouldn’t struggle to establish her identity on her own terms, but that the politics through which they attempt to communicate this struggle are incoherent. so i would simply reframe the conflict as one primarily between the white lotus, who are reformist liberals at best, and neoconservative reactionaries at worst. we see the best of the white lotus in atla (arguably), and the worst of the white lotus in the yangchen novels (which are fascinating and excellent and everyone should read them). xai bau is only ever mentioned in a single exposition dump (in one of the only truly great episodes of lok, i might add), but his philosophy and role in the narrative is nonetheless fascinating to me. the idea that the white lotus becomes more public facing after the war, leading to its detractors also growing more vocal, is genuinely interesting. the conflicts established between the white and red lotuses are genuinely compelling (to a point). but they never truly address how the white lotus kept korra locked away in a compound for the first 17 years of her life, they never meaningfully address the harm the white lotus has done to her and to the world.
like, of course korra couldn’t master airbending, the element of freedom, if she’s never been truly free. korra spent her entire life in a gilded cage, her role in the world and legacy defined for her by liberals who wanted her to be some kind of supercop instead of a genuine spiritual leader. it’s not korra’s fault that spirituality and harmony and meditation are difficult for her, she was literally denied those facets of herself for her entire adolescence. the white lotus constitute a microcosm of the ruthless neoliberal society korra encounters when first arriving in republic city. the white lotus are a metonym for the liberal identity politics centrist reformist vision of the world that lok uncritically presents as the ideal. in a better show, korra would question those systems, disavow them, and even perhaps attempt to dismantle them. korra would define her freedom of self on her own terms by realizing the ways in which the white lotus and their broader ideology has harmed her.
that said, the red lotus is also flawed. and i don’t just mean because they’re chaos-hungry terrorists who love to murder with impunity, but because they’re in the business of denying korra’s agency as a human being and not simply as the avatar. they want korra dead because they don’t believe in the role she embodies. and you know, they can want that for understandable political reasons without being completely evil about it, but obviously in a show as facile and shallow as lok, no they can’t. i think that korra’s brief pause in considering zaheer’s point of view should have lasted longer. i think that korra should have become disillusioned by the white lotus and the stipulations of capitalism (as early as book 1, frankly), and she should have genuinely considered joining them. and once she does eventually disavow them too, it’s not because of their evil commie politics, but because they’re also in the business of dictating her role in the world, and korra can’t stand to be boxed in by anyone, certainly not from people who claim to be in the business of dissolving borders.
so pretty much every villain in lok would fall under either the umbrella of white lotus operatives (whether direct or indirect) or red lotus (whether direct or indirect). people who want korra to be the world’s ultimate cop who upholds the systems that benefit them, or people who think that the avatar has no place in a truly just world, for (honestly) kind of valid reasons. the red lotus would be antagonists who work against korra’s arc of establishing her own freedom and agency, but the white lotus would be the “villains.” and the capitalist juggernauts who mistreat and exploit their workers (and their assistants and their daughters etc etc) would not be let off the hook so easily either. the neocolonial tensions in republic city wouldn’t be framed as an issue of the distant past. the issues of class and colonialism would be foregrounded alongside korra’s struggle to establish her identity. and then, perhaps, the narrative would finally cohere.

oppen heimer style
let me just start this by saying that this is not necesarily nolan being back to form, necesarily. i would place it just above the rest of nolan's dark period known as intersrellar, dunkirk and tenet. but that is not an exceedingly high bar to pass.
he has sadly become a director that i still respect appreciate and whose movies i enjoy but whom i can no longer say is an unmatched genius.
lets start with the bad.
its too long, and its pacing its a little awkward, no need to worry for spoilers here since we all know the history. the big money shot that we were all expecting, the trinity test, it happens roughly at the middle of the movie and after that the movie struggles to reach any other point of heightened emotion as high as that one.
its a solid three hour experience and more than once it had me wondering "ok, how much left, are we done yet?" but i will say this: once i reached the final scene and the credits start i did not feel a tired relief that it was finaly over, thank god. i feel dread, i felt doom and dread. i was fucking terrified. this movie has a good strong final scene that makes you forget of previous tests of patience you might have gone through watching it.
it tries to do this weird parallel story telling between lewis strauss and oppenheimer that it feels like they tried to film two different movies and then awkwardly splie them together. it jumps back and forth between the past and the present told form different points of view and a lot of it feels like it could have been cut out and the movie would have worked just as well. im not sure how necessary was the whole lewis strauss subplot to be honest.
the characters and dialog work a little better than in previous movies although we still get a lot of scenes of people talking in a clinical manner with expository dialog and deep philosophical musings. but once again i will say nolan seems to be learning some lessons, we do get a lot of scenes where actors are allowed to flex their emotional muscles.
in a lot of ways this is nolan's most lurid film. i think this is the first time we get to see breasts and naked people having sex in a nolan movie and it hits hard, both because of how unexpected it is in a nolan film and because of how out of context it shows up in-universe. i dont actually want to spoil this one because the effect it achieves actually worked really well.
and now moving on to the good, if i mentioned this might be nolan at his most lurid, it is certainly also at his most poetic. sure there is inception, but in here we get to see a lot of surrealist or downright metaphorical scenes without the excuse of being inside a dream. we get to see things that are not happening literally in universe but that are an artistic representation of what the characters are feeling. it felt really effective.
the man himself
this is a movie that is very much about the titular guy and trying to understand his inner world, trying to understand who the hell was this person, and honestly, where did he get off.
it seems oppenheimer was a complicated man, whose actions and desitions were sometimes confusing, sometimes downright contradictory (there is a nice wink to this when talking about the paticle/wave duality at the beggining of the film). he was a communist, he was a proud american, he was a genius, he was painfully naive,he was merely following orders but he had absolute control over his little town in los alamos, he worked hard for peace, he created nuclear war, he built a bomb that he didnt want people to use.
i heard criticisms that this movie romanticizes his work, that it may excuse or justify the use of the bomb, that it may be too kind with the guy. rest assured it doesnt. the movie brings up multiple times how the japanese were basically already surrendering, how senseless and callous and cruel the use on japanese cities was, how attrocious and horrifying the effects of the bomb were. and how oppenheimer definely contributed to it. if it shows the guy hand wringing or feeling gulty or trying to be a martyr of sorts, the movie definetly calls him out on that too by saying that its very rich of him to have done the deed and then regret it as if he didnt knew what he was doing or as if he had no control over it. a lot of times the movie shows the man as spineless, as a moral coward, as someone who was too weak to take on a position. "you dont get to commit a sin and then make everyone else feel pity for you because there are consequences!" is yelled at his face.
yet all the same, either because he is portrayed by cyllian murphy and his puppy dog eyes or because nolan deep down still admires who he was and what he did, you cant help but feel bad for the guy and like him still. he was a person, a complicated person with ugly sides that this movie in no way ignores, but still a brilliant man who at the very least had the basic decency to feel bad for the atrocities he contributed to.
going back to the movie itself
its has a weirdly star studded cast. if you were surprised by the sudden appearance of matt damon in interstellar, get ready to have that feeling multiple times during this film, every other scene suddenly shows up a hollywood megastar and it will take a few seconds before you accept ok, i guess gary oldman is in this film, and is that rami malek? and oh right, robert downy junior and oh my god is that fucking kenneth brannagh. in fact the one hollywood actor who is NOT in this movie, is surprisingly, inexplicably enough michael caine.
truly, breaking new ground.
and the cameos dont stop at the stars, the characters themselves are a constant delightful surprise if you are into the history of quantum mechanics and science in the first half of the 20th century. you have einstein of course (presented as this old exiled king, his time of glory long past but still sough after for his wisdom) but you have also bohrs, heisenberg, feynman, fermi, and fucking gödel somehow (they managed to shoe in a comment about his paranoia and hipocondry)
the actual explosion
time to talk about the thing we all went to see this movie for. is the atomic explosion cool? is it big? is it loud? does it go boom? does it look cool?.
suffice to say. yes. one of the coolest experiences i had in watching film ever in my life. it has a build up of a solid 30 minutes or so (arguably its been building up the entire movie) the tensin keeps on rising all through out. the countdown slowly advances, the expectations are at the highest theyve ever been and by the time the bomb was actually about to go off in the middle of the american desert, the first atom bomb ever exploted, my heart was hammering out of my chest.
its fully worth the price of admission and the three hours.
final comments
i want to double back to the poetic filmmaking i mentioned early to comment about the main thing its used for. nolan makes it clear in no uncertain terms the horror that atomic weapons unleashed on the world. the man goes out of his way to make it clear, these things can destroy the planet. we've all become perhaps a bit desensitized to atomic explosion in film, made more and more espectacular with the advancement of cgi. but this movie brings it back home and leaves you with a last message about the danger of nuclear proliferation.
i walked out of the theatre with my legs shaking and my eyes falling out of my skull. i had a hard time talking a bit afterwards, i was a little shell shocked.
so, i guess in the end, my thoughts on this movie are just as complicated as the man himself, the man who oppenheimed the world.
8/10

im reading "the battle of the casbah", by this terrible french guy admitting unapologetically to doing a huge number of literal war crimes (killing prisoners of war, killing mass amounts of civilians, torture), and its kind of fascinating seeing this guy like, do this but also be clearly in some ways psychologically normal, or at least psychologically relatable, like...he's human. look at this joke! i might make a joke like this!
Which was why I was always thought of as an oddball. The more narrow-minded types said I was nothing but an intellectual, i.e., a faggot, a communist, and an antimilitarist.
anyway. what was my point. yes. the thing its been making me think about is like. war is so so horrific. its maybe the most awful thing humans have conceived of. its hard to like, fully absorb how bad it is. the worst crimes we know of, committed again and again and again. but also its something some people like doing! theres people who enlist voluntarily, not out of duty, but because they feel its like, their calling, and i think rightfully so! i think their brains are built for this, to the same extent anyone is built for any job. they like it! and i dont think such people are like...broken. i dont think they can be "fixed", although maybe they can be modified. humanity doesnt have a peaceful past. killing is a central part of our past. chimpanzees do war, to the extent theyre capable, its been part of our history for an evolutionarily relevant amount of time!
idk. i guess it just makes me think about our future. hopefully more peaceful than our past.

hallo. would you say you have any communist literature recommendations past like. maybe. basic marxism. cz i still have those recs u gave me who knows how long ago but yk willing to expand the list just a bit
ok sorry it took me a bit to reply i´ve been rotating the question on my mind
ok lenin´s most well known more theorical work is state and revolution so i´m gonna rec that. recently i´ve been rereading what is to be done for a book club so i could also rec that tho it´s more specifically about organizing and is kinda confusing without more historical context
admittedly im not as familiar with mao stuff as id like to be but he was you know a pretty influential marxist so you might wanna check him out. the little red book is his most well known work and also not that complicated (it´s like. quotes) so there´s that
now as for stuff not by the most well known guys, i like the russian revolution a view from the third world by rodney. it suffers a little because its more a collection of lecture notes from the author than a single coherent text but it has plenty of interesing ideas. the wretched of the earth by fanon is more specifically about colonialism. parenti has some takes im rather against but i thought his book blackshirts and reds was fine and it´s one of the books that always get recommended by MLs in the english speaking web

You know what, I was ranting about shit to a certain Chinese friend of ours and I'm directly gonna say it, its absolutely fucked up now that I'm actually thinking about it that @/sophieinwonderland accused me of being pro-CCP and pushing CCP propaganda
Like a while ago when I found out about it, it was so wild it was funny, haha chinese people this that assuming we are all CCP haha classic racist fucking bullshit
But its only when I started explaining the history of attrocities and shit situations my family's home country INDONESIA was put through did I realize just how especially fucked it was.
Cause back in the whole cold war shit Indonesia has a supposedly pretty good guy as the founding President and what with the whole anti-communist vs communist push, and HONESTLY at this point I don't even know if they were thinking of discussing allying with the CCP because of all the fucking American propaganda
But seeing as Indonesia was communist in ideology, America literally fucking assisted in staging a coup that pushed both anti-communist rhetoric AND SPECIFICALLY anti-chinese rhetoric that resulted in the fucking bloody massacre of Chinese citizens in Indonesia. Literally people who were BORN and RAISED in Indonesia that had Chinese blood and were just as indoneisan as everyone else born and raised there were literally hunted and killed for being fucking Chinese because America both supported and helped push the rhetoric that Chinese = Communist = Bad = Murder them
And so Im fucking sitting here, with my parents having LITERALLY BEEN CHASED OUT OF INDONESIA FOR BEING CHINESE AND ACCUSED OF BEING EVIL COMMUNISTS BECAUSE THEY WERE LITERALLY BEING CHASED IN THE STREETS, having this white fucking bitch from America saying that I am ACTUALLY a secret CCP fucking agent trying to push fucking CCP propaganda
I'm sorry, I'm not.
My dad also was not
Unfortunately fucking Americans pushed that anyone who is Chinese is automatically CCP and that literally resulted in the death of A LOT of people like my dad who BTW has a lot of trauma for completely unknown reasons
Anyways I'm fucking pissed off. And ya know what, if I didnt have the fucking bitch blocked and probably wasn't also blocked by her, I would just @ her directly cause fuck you and the literal rhetoric that lead to fucking massacres of a "third world country" that literally jsut wanted to be left alone
And FYI; the coup resulted in the placement of a heavily corrupt western-ideology leader which directly increased the sheer amount of corruption in Indonesia but ok.
Like theres a whole fucking book on it that I haven't read cause it pisses me off but my sister read it and was like "lol yeah the US admitted to it" and its literally called the Jakarta Method
I probably missed some details and got it wrong cause shocker, I'm talking from my culture's lived experience and passed down fucking cultural trauma but whatever.
It's really fucked up.
Don't quote me on this cause I probably again, got details wrong, but that fucking rhetoric undeniably - by americas own admission - resulted in the death of many Indonesians on the premise of Those Evil Chinese Communists. I'm hesitant to post this cause again, I am speaking from released American documents and my family's personal reports and peer's reports so there might be errors, but ya know what, white americans?
Fuck off. Even if I got the details wrong in some places, it doesn't fucking matter because dear white americans, you still killed millions of people in indonesia in your crusade against communism so please miss me with accusing me - a first generation child from an Immigrant from Indonesia - an Evil Communist.
The sentiment in Indonesia still persists, enough so that when I met someone who was from China (who had a relative who was born and raised in indonesia) heard I was Indonesian-Chinese widened his eyes and went "ohhhhh" and commented that his relative doesn't go home to Indonesia anymore because its fucking dangerous.
Its fucking stupid.

what's your favourite silly moment for each of the skills?
for volition its def in the 'you're compromised' scene where he 'doesn't add flair' but also has/uses the most nicknames for the other skills
reaction speed has this little comment in the same scene where if your logic is low enough they go 'oh? was someone supposed to say something? well it's just me, swooshing around in here! swoosh :D'
encyclopedia takes the fucking cake with the trivia quiz tho. love his dumbass so much
oh man tall task for me to try and compile EVERY skills personal fave moment but i love them so much i am willing to try. under the cut
logic: god this dude is literally so dry he was the hardest to find good quotes for. i still love him though. the boring stiff. " If you drink this, then you will die. That's a fact. And that's why we're going to save you from yourself and store this as a SELLABLE item. Go sell it at the pawnshop for a profit." after you buy the pure alcohol is pretty funny.
encyclopedia: the innocence quiz. the entire thing. also contact mike.
rhetoric: what could possibly top "say one of these fascist or communist things or fuck off"
drama: lie, sire! for no reason! also any time he really leans into the old-timey speak its so good to me. AND during the payphone prank calls he can suggest that you stir up shit for no reason. love him
conceptualization: lots of truly beautiful lines from our fella concept here but i do also love. when they get silly with it. " It can still be an otherwordly sex-mystery *in your head*. With a dark twist, even." and "Imbecilic. Yes, should the future ever come, it will look deeply imbecilic. Like this guy." and "O WALLFATHER!"
visual calculus: "I'm just a representation of your mental faculties... piecing together any available information." love when they just outright say it lmao. also "Consuming food is mechanical process for him. He doesn't enjoy it, just goes through the motions and moves on." kind of a sad detail about rene that i didnt know about thank you VC
volition: "I don't do flair."
inland empire: "No-no, don't sing the happy song, it's stupid. Sing the sad song, it's profound."
empathy: paging doctor love... " Life doesn't have a *BACK* button. Now get off your ass and speak the truth about Sylvie the Whore." "He's enjoying your little failure. He finds it amusing, he's revelling in the sweaty rage on your face."
EDC: the time he brings up literally right after kim says "officers dont fucking dump old police shit in the river" officers dumping police shit in the river
authority: "The lieutenant is a narcomaniac!" also "Mewling wimp! Pathetic..." and "Show him the ham still got it!"
suggestion: at one point he gets exasperated of harry trying the expression over and over. also "Logic and reason won't work on this old bat. Better go for shameless emotional manipulation. What's a grandmother's deepest vulnerability?"
endurance: a wink shaped growl sounds from your ass. what the fuck is going on in your large intestine harry. ALSO HOLY SHIT I DIDNT KNOW THE TUTORIAL AGENT HAS A UNIQUE LINE IN THE FASCISM THOUGHT CONVERSATION?? forget about föminism im losing my mind.
pain threshold: "Sounds like you were in some real *fundamental* pain there, muscle-man." MUSCLE-MAN!!!! on a sadder note: "Her beauty was like the glowing coil on a hot stove, and yet you felt *blessed* to touch it..." GIRL....... dont do this to me.....
physical instrument: eyes on the ball, dinky winky! also if your logic isnt high enough then HE will be the one to say "Son, you will NOT kill yourself with this. Not today. So we're going to store this as a SELLABLE item. Go sell it at the pawnshop for a profit." about the pure alcohol
electro-chemistry: HE CALLS PI A "sinewy idiot" ohhh my god. delightful. also every time he goes "yum" like when thinking about cigarettes
shivers: MR EVRART IS HELPING HIM FIND HIS GUN. Also the classic "got a brother in the cut, where the wood at?"
half light: oh my god she has so many killer lines. "They ain't got the cojones." she also has lots of nicknames for people. "cum-stain", "fucking ballerina", "they're all dorks." also "Utter the POWER WORDS!" and "Even when you're trying to scare someone, the most important thing is: how does it look on your resume?" AND "*YAWWWWN!* Can you imagine anything duller than a bunch of binoclards yanking each others' knobs?" half light i love you
hand/eye: "My favourite [thing] is the gun." LMAO
perception: she gets upset at one point when rhetoric claims you can smell communism and shes like. um. no. thats not possible. you cant smell communism. i cant find it but it actually happens a few times i think
reaction speed: I NEVER HEARD THE SWOOSH ONE. oh my god that fucking rules. swoosh. my next favorite is when youre talking to sylvie and she turn you down really fast reaction speed is like wow shes fast, what else is she good at? Baseball? Ring-a-bell Quiz Shows? Catching keys in the air? Petting an angry cat? okay queen
savoir faire: slaps one of this dude's arms. this guy can fit sooooo much hustle grindset in him. "You can't hang 'vapour-porn' in the foyer of your chalet." AND HE KEEPS CALLING HIMSELF SAVVY!!!!!!!!! "Hey, money-mouth. Eendracht. The impeccable hustler-provider of the seventh generation. It's showtime with Savvy!" "But Savvy's got your back. Savvy's going to book you a charter flight with eighty birds of prey on board, to a land where the streets are paved with krugerrands and fixed-income securities."
interfacing: i do love his "Told you that you *needed* those chaincutters. Everything is connected. Everything has a purpose." thats less silly and more hopeful in a way i really really like. he's got many delightful lines, and i think is the one that is most clued into the video game-y aspects (dialogue trees, etc) probably the saddest instance of this we see is with the dolores dei dream. "Don't let her. Don't let her go there. You should re-do the topics. Go over *everything*, the things you didn't say before too. Make it go on and on..." wailing. screaming and crying. on a brighter note! when you lose your pen he goes "Nooooo! That was my favourite thing, of all the things you have."
composure: calling reaction speed a "shifty asshole" is pretty fucking funny ngl.

i only care about drama and having fun on the internet which is why i propose that jensen ackles should guest star on succession. im thinking he should be a beto o'rourke-type hot texas presidential hopeful democrat running against the roys' far right choice (you tell him he's gonna be texan and he would sign up asap)
here are my ideas for how the characters would have scenes/storylines with him:
logan: wishes that man didn't exist. i want the word "euthanize" to come out of brian cox's mouth.
connor: is 100% sure that he's a communist.
kendall: they went to college together. kendall keeps bringing up college-time memories and events in a very awkward and swagless way. jensen's character also has daddy issues so they gotta talk abt it at some point in some fucked up way. i think they should get drunk and just sit against a wall and talk shit about their fathers.
roman: on a recon mission to find out what's the deal with this dude bc roman's in a pseudosexual relationship with that nazi guy and so he has to protect his interests. a yet another homoerotic scene set in a public bathroom.
shiv: trying to use her democratic connections. they probably fucked a long time ago. she thinks it might work on him but no dice.
tom: somehow bothered over everyone talking how hot that guy is. has come up with a few choice fanciful words and descriptions for him. as he's team logan rn, has to deal with that dude but also delegates some of it to greg.
greg: is somehow almost recruited into jensen's character's campaign staff????? like he's having his west wing moment.

I tried asking something like this before, but I'm not sure if it didn't send correctly or you didn't want to answer (which is fine!!) But just giving it one more try, because I am curious about your opinion. This goes back to that prejudice conversation and how much the other guys are possibly projecting their own feelings there - I remember red also saying in that part of EWH that elvis thought catholics were dangerous/the demon referred to in the bible. Do you think that's true? I just always found that a bit strange when he had quite a few girlfriends with that background.
thank you for re-asking!! im also really sorry for not getting around to it the first time you asked, thank you for being patient <3
for a while I was getting loads of ask and I got a little bit overwhelmed as some of them were very heavy topics that I really needed to gather my thoughts/research on before answering them and as a result some other asks have been left unanswered… for a very long time 😭 but I promise I have the intention to answer every ask I get, im just a serial procrastinator 🤧
As for Elvis being prejudiced against Catholics I think this may have been another situation of Elvis holding these views inwardly or even sharing them with a few close friends but not exactly acting on them
What I’ve come to learn from reading many different perspectives of Elvis is that it’s likely he said different things, or acted differently, depending on the person he was talking too and likely the reason we get so many conflicting stories about him
For example I would say the Memphis Mafia group (Red, Sonny, Billy, Lamar, Marty, and Alan) grew up in the same or very similar environments to Elvis: southern, conservative, and mostly in baptist/pentecostal churches (with the exception of Lamar, Marty and Alan who were Jewish). Where on the flip side you have men like Jerry and Joe who were raised Catholic and from my understanding raised in more “liberal” upbringings. So it’s likely that Elvis talked/interacted with the MM slightly different than he would with Jerry and Joe, and even Larry Geller who was born in New York as opposed to the south
Maybe he expressed views like being against Catholicism to the MM because he knew they came from similar backgrounds as him, and wouldn’t be offended by it. This is likely why you haven’t seen Joe or Jerry talk about Elvis’ alleged anti-Catholicism because I don’t believe he would ever express those views to people who he knew were Catholic because he didn’t want to offend them or hurt their feelings, his heart was truly good in that way
(excerpt from “Elvis: What Happened?” where Red and Sonny claim Elvis thought Catholicism was “dangerous”)
Tumblr media
I found this excerpt from “Elvis and the Memphis Mafia” below very interesting ⬇️
Tumblr media
It seems to be another instance of Elvis acting differently with the some of the group than he did with the others because from what I remember about Jerry’s book, there was no talk over their political differences and definitely never a instance where Elvis called him a communist 💀
in fact Jerry said “Elvis didn’t often speak openly about race or politics”
So maybe this was a situation where when Jerry was expressing anti-war views or views that Elvis deemed too “liberal”, Elvis would then privately complain about them to some of the others because he knew they likely thought the same as him
It’s like how people say they have a different personality for different friends. You might talk to a work-friend different than you would to a school-friend, so maybe that is why we get so many conflicting stories about Elvis from the people who knew him: if that makes sense🤧
* also this is just my personal interpretation, definitely don’t take it as truth until you’ve researched for yourself, I’m honestly kind of spitballing here
What is also really interesting about this excerpt below ⬇️ is that according to Marty Lacker it was Larry Geller who put the idea that Catholicism was “dangerous” into Elvis’ head, likely when they met in the 60s. So I wonder if that actually coincides with when Elvis started telling Red and Sonny that Catholicism was “dangerous”
(excerpt is also from “Elvis and the Memphis Mafia”)
Tumblr media
However if Marty, Lamar, Red and Sonny never spoke on any anti-Catholic views that Elvis potentially held, I would have never thought it myself because there is so much evidence that points to Elvis being open about Catholicism
Like you mentioned, he had several girlfriends who were of that faith
To name a few of the top of my head, Regis Wilson (his date for his senior prom), Priscilla Presley, Joyce Bova, and Sheila Ryan were all either practicing Catholics, or raised Catholic, and I’m sure there are even more
And speaking of Priscilla, it was Elvis who decided to enroll her in an all-girls Catholic school, despite her attending a regular highschool in Germany. So if Elvis was openly prejudiced towards Catholics, why would he date girls who were of that faith, let alone date a girl that went to a Catholic school (that he chose) ⬇️
(excerpt from “Elvis: What Happened?”)
Tumblr media
He also befriended several Catholics like Joe Esposito and Jerry Schilling along with Mother Dolores Hart who he met on the set of Loving you. She was a very devout Catholic even as an actress, which I’m sure Elvis witnessed, and has now been a Catholic nun for several decades, and has only ever said good things about Elvis
And according to Jerry Schilling, Elvis also had no qualms about flirting with a bunch of Catholic girls in 1955 ⬇️
Tumblr media
And according to a story told in Peter Guralnick’s “Careless love” Elvis was more than happy to make out with a Catholic girl, and really respected her decision to stay a virgin due to her Catholic faith ⬇️
Tumblr media
Not to mention Elvis literally covered a Catholic song called “Miracle of the Rosary” !!!
youtube
and we also can’t forget that he starred in a film (Change of Habit) that was about three Catholic nuns ⬇️
Tumblr media
so all in all, if Elvis did indeed hold anti-Catholic views like some of the Memphis Mafia members have alleged, it didn’t seem like he acted on them or ever purposely mistreated a Catholic person
Elvis truly had a good heart and I think his actions should be judged rather than his words, especially when it could be a case of them projecting their own prejudices, and not actually said by Elvis himself 🤧

im not saying this is a given and that every video game needs to do this to be “good”, but i recently rewatched a bunch of hbomberguy videos and in his fallout new vegas essay he talks about the moment with caesar’s legion where you argue about actual hegelian dialectics w caesar and he also compares this moment to disco elysium in his essay and i just have to say that this is such a cool way to engage players into thinking about pretty deep philosophical and ideological questions without making it all that clear that you are *discussing philosophy* and the apporach is so unique to video games.
like, you create a character/faction who clearly is not the good guy in the story but they give you the chance to “debate” them in a sense - the way caesar talks about his motives and ideology forces you to think for yourself. like, this is *not* a moment where you are supposed to see that “oh, maybe this faction isn’t as bad as i thought they were - what a surprising twist! they are equally moral as the NCR!”, like if that is your takeaway from the moment you are actually super fucking gullible, because, yeah, ceasar is quoting smart men he read a book about and yeah, he might actually think that his approach is correct but you need to apply your own knowledge of morality to the situation.
like if you see these people torturing and killing civilians and latching people to crosses and calling everyone that isn’t like them a “degenerate”, then maybe the ideology of their leader doesn’t matter. also, you have to think about if he is just misusing said ideology to *sound* like that is what he is doing, to *sound* morally right so that people join him, despite knowing it’s bullshit. like, the game doesn’t force you to come to the correct conclusion, you have to actually think about if what he says is actually meaningful and correct and the game does not chew up the right answer for you. like you can end this game working for the actual fascists because they have a compelling leader figure and maybe joining the faction makes you see it for what it is. like, if you aren’t smart enough to realize that ceasar’s legion aren’t the good guys, you have to play along with them until you yourself go “wait, are we the bad guys?”.
disco elysium also does that a lot, like it never just *tells* you if a person is morally correct in what they are saying or if they might try to decieve you by sounding big and impressive to hide their very bigoted agenda. you have to actually think for yourself a lot and realize, that even people who might have *some* correct opinions, do not have all of the correct opinions. that is why i loved that they made kim, who is probably the most beloved character in the game and someone you often look at as a moral compass, a centrist. like. he isn’t a confrontational person, or anyone who is looking to change the status quo and a lot of his morals and ideals he has otherwise don’t mean all that much if he tries to keep his head down all the time. like, you could actually look at kim in the game and say “he usually has opinions i agree with, he probably is right about that”, but to the game kim being a centrist is actually more of a moral failing and a character flaw than just a reasonably held belief.
while i have some beef with the explaination as to why the deserter *did what he did* and there is like, a billion more examples of three-dimensional characters in the game, i loved that the deserter - the only *actual* communist you meet in the game - is a massive asshole, who is incredibly sexist and racist and just a complete cunt, not so that you go “wow, so communism sucks too :/”, but to see his failings and also the failings of communism to be something you need to be mindful of when calling yourself a communist, that you still have to be a good person and also have an actual community. like this guy doesn’t exist so that you go “communism bad, actually”, but that you can see that he isn’t wrong about everything, but he still *is* wrong about things.
like, i love that, i love the way these games tell you “if you take people to be either 100% correct or 100% incorrect all of the time, you will never learn to actually find your own standpoints on topics but always just copy other people’s morality. if you don’t learn to think about your own ideology, you will copy other people’s flaws and harmful ideologies without realizing it and you will have to learn the hard way that you are wrong”.
and a lot of games that try to discuss political ideology or societal issues (cloudpunk comes to my mind rn, but they are not the only ones doing that) are so scared of “confusing” players by having bad people have good traits and good people have bad traits or have a person with a bit of a misguided ideology or have people try to convince you that their bigoted ideology is actually good, because they are scared that people will think they endorse bad ideologies or advertise fascism. and bc of that they make people really one-dimensional and always point out, who is right and who is wrong and people basically lay out their bad intentions for you, so that you don’t actually confuse them to be a good person and i think we should force players to actually use their brain sometimes

so, i was enrolled in a vocational highschool. its the type of school that are halfway a tradeschool. its a program in my country that i quote here, meant to produce ready-made workers right out of the education system. the curriculum for every highschool major you took is different, but i personally never learn biology, geography and chemistry beyond the basics in middle school.
random aside over, for one year me and my classmates (computer programming major) had to share a classroom for normal school lessons with the guys majoring for heavy equipments engineering. one time there was an orientation presentation for them and we had to sit there as the teacher told them the kind of work theyre expected to do. so, theyre going to learn maths and physics and everything else so they know how to operate and fix industrial grade machinery like the massive trucks meant to ship coal around, mega structures to dig tunnels for mining operations.
during the last slide, the teacher showed them a slideshow of workplace deaths.. it was morbid, he said to us that death is inevitable on your line of work. its going to happen. of course we can minimize this by following safety codes, but accidents will happen.
and it doesnt register to me as weird at the time, but its stuck in my mind. like i had the vague sense that something wasnt right. and it isnt. like, he's showing kids that dying on the job, its a tragedy sure, but its normal. its fact of life. my country is an imperialized nation so they never try to lie about whats the purpose of our education. we are here to prepare for work, not to learn. and from the beginning, the oil and mining industry doesnt care about human life. and im thinking of the shares and stocks where all of those profits fueled by death eventually finds itself, in the pockets of men who might never see the inside of a oil tank. or where all the oils and minerals are heading, as i sit here waiting in a queue on the gas station to fill my motorbike even though there's an oil and coal processing site just a few hundred kilometers away still in border of my hometown.
worst part is i know this isnt the worst because someone out there who might even be younger than me is dying for the gasoline im getting, the circuit boards inside my phone, and i know one of my friends online is sleeping inside a car while office buildings and billboards stay lit and functional every day of the year fueled and powered by unimaginable amount of normalized deaths.
and im also thinking of the oil spills at the beach, the days that gets hotter and hotter every year. last year there was a gruesome car accident. an oil truck swerved off the sidewalk and killed a dozen people. its not the only major first accident in that place, as always the old complaints about public safety and roads came back for a while, and they might be satisfied that there's a barricade and a rule for large trucks not being allowed to be on the road during the day, but im also thinking of my friend who worked in the industry as a safety operator, complaining that half of the trucks are overdue for maintenance for years and the drivers license have expired but no one ever did anything about it because theyre on a constant deadline and spending time to do checks only makes the managers yell at you for missing a quota and you had to stay longer instead of getting some sleep or spending time with family, in a job where you already work 12 hours a day on average.
my point is, its all connected. just simply asking where the gas powering your car came from revealed a lot. i know this is retreading the basics but i think its good to remember how interconnected everything is. how the tragedies and genocides and social murders arent an aberration but a logical conclusion of the way society is organized. its a well oiled machine, excuse my pun. its all-encompassing, but seeing it as it is makes it easier to find its weak spot, areas where we can fight. this is why im a communist, specifically a marxist leninist, i do think workers' revolt with international proletariat society is the only way we could break free.
but anyway, all this is to brag about how i never learn geography in highschool and yet i can still name more countries and capitals than the average college student in the us so (^3^). also now that i mention it i also never learn biology but i know more about the human body than your average terf so 😌 shitty schools is not an excuse 💖

i have no hope to change anyones mind but the whole genderbend convo really drives home who conceptualizes gender as a social construct- a tool w a purpose- and who stayed at "sex ≠ gender" and didnt dig more than that.
like, the thing is sex exists to justify gender so they kind of are the same thing? the societal view of gender that ties "attraction to women" to the male gender & "subserviance to men" to the female gender is not like, a mistake. gender exists to hold up the cishetero norm- they are the same thing.
this also explains really neatly the trend (that everyone ignores in convos about genderbends) of only bending one half of a gay ship to make it straight & the one (that everyone thinks sucks but cant link back to WHY people bend in the first place for some reason) of making a guy into a big tittied long haired half naked woman (who definitely wants to fuck you). these are not mistakes, "bending gone bad", they are the core of genderbending. i dont see how you can ever reclaim this in a gay + trans friendly (and nonbinary friendly!) way. aka: are nonbinary HCs genderbends? is it transphobic to genderbend a canon nonbinary character into a binary gender? how do you "correctly" bend a binary trans character?
or: i thought we agreed personality, presentation, and sexual characteristics werent indicative of gender. so if you ONLY change a characters gender- they should remain the exact same. in which case what did you change exactly?... not even pronouns LOL. but if u take gender dynamics into account, or generally change more while bending, well thats a new character isnt it. again- what is it that you are bending? are men from mars and women from venus now?
uhm again idc if u personally like genderbends im just a communist & know the basics of sociology and i personally do not see how to reconcile these w genderbending. liberals u can have it, it is all yours 👍
