Love Deanna for giving a perspective on the double edged sword that religion can be for ordinary people in Exandria.

She's got this unwanted god in her life and can't do anything about it. The first gift he gave her of a resurrection turned out badly, she regrets it now, but she can't go back and she's just gonna have to make the best of it. And it's not all bad, his second gift of divine powers can be useful and helpful so she uses it and helps people, knowing that the price she pays him in return is spreading his name and inspiring his worship. And now she's finding out that the good name she's spreading is not so good after all, not to everyone. All those people she helped, was the price for that condoning the suffering of many more? Is the promise of her peaceful afterlife worth the cost others will pay for it in this lifetime?

No, the gods of Exandria are not omnipotent or omnibenevolent. They have their own agendas and priorities. There's a price for the help they give and Deanna is its poster child. Both as one who has paid it, and now as one unknowlingly complicit in making others pay as well.

She's the perfect example of someone where divinity and religion has heavily influenced her life for good and for bad, whether she wanted it or not, and for the first time is finally seeing the possibility of choice. Is losing the good worth living life free of the bad? Is the whole system too corrupt to be salvaged? Or is it possible, or worth it, to try to fix the bad?

It's a really interesting journey. I'm sorry we won't see more of it for a while, if ever.

oh boy it IS. tng update time. tonight, just under an hour ago, we finished watching "chain of command" parts i & ii. i'm not differentiating between them even though one had. WWWWAY more nudity than the other. hey did you guys know tng can occasionally pop the FUCK off

to me this episode felt like a backdoor pilot to ds9 which we will be doing tomorrow because it had cardassians in it and basically the only thing i know about ds9 is that gay cardassian that wants to fuck the doctor. and he's like the definition of the predatory gays/predatory gaze joke from what i have seen from gifs. so i was expecting like, some minor cardassian shenanigans and mild flirtiness

holy shit.

normally i complain there's too much downtime and technobabble in tng. there was not an OUNCE of fat on this episode. from start to finish we went at 500mph

like, we open with the guy taking away picard's command. and you're like oh no a demotion! but then it's COVERT OPS and also a suicide mission???

and the guy who takes over is a war-mongering bastard with a dubya accent idk how they predicted that in 1992 but GREAT job. i really loved to hate him, and one of my only nitpicks with this episode is that he didn't get more of what should have been coming to him

we acted this episode. will riker grinding his teeth every time he spoke to this guy. deanna's worried looks. beverly feeling guilty for leaving picard behind. i was actually complaining about patrick stewart not emoting when she was stuck in that little hole but now i understand. he had to save it for the FUCKING payload

ROLE REVERSAL FOR THE WOMEN. deanna got to wear a real uniform and beverly got to flirt her way out of a Situation. i love deanna's uniform, even if it is too tight around the chest. i think that's preferable to it being too tight around her crotch and leading to the horrific c*melt*e situation (sorry to say it like that). her hair also looked great this ep. so did bev's weirdly??? women's rights.

data didn't have much to do in this episode except accidentally give geordi more work which made me sad but it WAS wild to see him in a red shirt. i'll miss him until it's time to watch tng again

the little infiltration was charming. worf and beverly teasing each other about heights and bats. even the cave-in. picard getting left behind because worf tried to hold the door open like that guy in narnia and got SHOT.

i loved the guy who was doing the peace talks. he had the most unsettling horrific smile i've ever seen in my life. STAN a legend.

truly though even though i enjoyed the first half of the episode and thought it was solidly watchable the second half is what elevated it into mind blowing territory.

and like first of all it must be said: picard buck ass naked. computer show me image

i want you to imagine that you are 1. profoundly sleep deprived 2. have been complaining about the lack of sex in this show for six and a half seasons 3. do not find this man remotely physically attractive 4. AND the only thing you know about cardassians is gifsets of the guy from ds9 wanting to fuck the little doctor guy 5. you are PROFOUNDLY sleep deprived. only then can you imagine a fraction of the depths of my hysteria

i actually laughed so shrilly and loudly discord MUTED me cathy was like youve been silent for like 30 seconds are you still THERE. i laughed so hard i quite literally cried. we had to pause it for ten entire minutes. not even because it was funny i was just like. SHOCKED.

THEY REALLY WENT ALL IN ON THIS. it was like something out of a fanfic. a BAD fanfic. like those whump fics where guys get captured and made into sex slaves. EXCEPT PATRICK STEWART WAS ACTING!!!!! like it got SO SERIOUS so QUICK

i just now skimmed an article that said patrick stewart himself did research on torture and also went all in ie filming nude fr. the dedication came through in the work i wish tng could be like this always

bro like. the part where he could have walked out but thought bev was still captive. the part where he was was like YOU'RE SIX YEARS OLD AND YOU CAN'T HURT ME. when he got the torturer to call him by his real name. when he ate the live worms or whatever they were i couldn't look. when they got to talking about that guy's daughter. like we literally got the best of both worlds. picard reverse uno'd him at every turn and kept his wits about him and then in the end he BROKE ANYWAY

listen to me when he said it i was a little disappointed. i could see in his face given another 30 seconds he would have said five. i said OUT LOUD to catherine they should have showed us a shot of five lights and then had him say four anyway. but him saying four defiantly was still so so so good

THAT'S THE THESIS STATEMENT OF THE EPISODE. THAT TORTURE DOESNT GIVE YOU INFORMATION JUST WHAT THE TORTURER WANTS YOU TO SAY

AND THEN THEY JUST ROLLED CREDITS.

AND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's so wonderful-awful that that guy KNEW picard was getting release and STILL he felt the need to finish the conditioning, which i assume was meant to get picard to fake-confess to killing 55 men women and children like that one guy said. like, he didn't have time to record that confession. he JUST wanted to break him, and that was all. i bet he thinks about it all the fucking time. the one that got away.

again, i wish dubya knockoff hadn't been responsible for his release. i REALLY wanted riker to do a mutiny. but there just wasn't time. i am still glad riker got to give him shit but like we deserved more comeuppance truly bc he SUCKED SO BAD. also like lmaoooo at ANYONE saying starfleet is a science peaceful organization now. they're warmongers! they're no different from mirrorverse not really

aside from that though it was absolutely flawless. one of the best tng episodes possibly THE best tng episode. i feel so completely satisfied and also grateful that we will be watching ds9 next because going from this to another fucking barclay episode (the next tng one) would ruin me. i need TIME!!!

TOMORROW: ds9's "emissary," parts 1 & 2 !!!

we're going in release order, so now our watch schedule will look something like...

two at a time. that's gonna mess us up for "birthright" but we'll cope somehow

Ezri Dax and Kathyrn Janeway meeting, maybe at Starfleet HQ or a conference on leadership and trauma? I think they'd get along in an interesting way. Also what made you love season 3 of Picard?

For the Trek Talks

They meet because Starfleet orders Captain Janeway to report to Ezri Dax for mandatory therapy -- the usual fandom choice is Deanna Troi but Starfleet recognizes that Ezri could be someone they can utilize.

Apart from the enforced leave, Starfleet made it a condition for her promotion that Janeway take mandatory therapy. Janeway does not like this-- if Janeway was already a hard customer for the EMH, Janeway is even a tougher one when it comes to mandatory therapy.

Also, Janeway's initial grumpy kneejerk reaction about Ezri is to get offended that she was assigned a child for therapy.

Ezri recognizes all these of course, and she's not at all intimidated by all the ways Janeway is trying to hack her way out of therapy. Compared to Garak, Janeway is not nearly as slippery as she thinks she is. Also, she has several lifetimes under her belt, but most importantly, Ezri Dax is a damned good therapist.

Eventually, Ezri chips away Janeway's reluctance and they begin to make some headway. Unfortunately, some crisis happens and Janeway is pulled away before she's ready to but Ezri Dax is nothing if not persistent. If the mountain can't go to therapy, therapy will go to the mountain. Or something.

After, they do become great friends but boy, were there some tough things they had to work through to get there.

Also, what made you love season 3 of Picard?

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but that flavor of Trek is my exact flavor of Trek. I love the space show, the starship, the Starfleet of it all. I love the full-on minute of ship porn with the swelling music.

I love seeing Seven of Nine finally in uniform. I love a good Bridge crew, I love the pace. The dialogue, I love the complicated messiness of relationships and I got two really great conversational minefields first between Crusher and Picard and next between Ro and Picard. The weight of history between those relationships.

The weight of history between the characters.

The sheer beauty and menace of the Shrike, the SUBMARINE STYLE starship fight-- I'm a sucker for a great submarine-style starship fight.

Amanda Plummer as VADIC. The way she says: "Jean-Luc Picard."

Seven of Nine, in the background manning Ops station, hints that the maintenance and engineering is so well oiled because Seven might not have been in Starfleet in nearly two decades but she slipped back into the same person who would do efficiency reports on EVERYONE.

Voyager slowly but surely returns to Seven after two seasons of Seven not saying anything about Voyager, we finally see the ship, Seven talks about the ship and her crew.

TUVOK AND SEVEN.

It has my whole heart.

The way the Dominion war is set into the bones and DNA of the Federation and Starfleet that it clearly left a mark. The DS9 callbacks, the way the virus idea from Dark Frontier pays off in Federation Day, assimilating people unknowingly. (Because Admiral Janeway fucked up the Borg/Queen so bad they can't even assimilate in the way they usually did).

The promise of tomorrow.

(And from a 12 Monkeys fan -- the very, very blatant 12 Monkeys easter eggs.)

Is it a perfect season? Of course not, no Trek has a Perfect season, it could have benefitted from a few more passes, especially the last half of the season. They could have IMO done a lot more with Seven, especially with the Borg stuff-- it's the same complaint I've had of Picard since season 1.

But I get it -- the show is called Star Trek Picard and not Star Trek Seven of Nine/Legacy. But it should be. Also, 10 episodes aren't enough, and I get how the COVID precautions ate at the budget, that season 2 ate up both production and budgets.

But that's just the nature of the beast of loving a Trek show.

...man, that's a ponderer. (happy wincest wednesday -- idk if that's when you sent this but let's just go with it.) um -- do spoilers for the fic matter? Well, there'll be spoilers here, if anyone cares.

Let's just relocate the entire thing to Stanford Era, as you say. 2003, Dean's 24, him and John are still working together but the separation is beginning. Given the two-part nature of the curse and cure, I think...

Yes, John would be able to turn Dean back into a guy. He does care for Dean and love him and his love is... complicated, let's say that, haha. The fact that he would work is telling about the emotional incest of their whole situation. He's entangled with Dean in a way that Bobby, for example, isn't, even if he's not Dean's fuckoff actual soulmate. (One benefit of this scenario: they wouldn't try Bobby as a substitute. I can see John throwing a random stranger at Dean, but not Bobby. One horribly awkward bullet dodged!)

That said, the iterative nature of the curse would continue, much as it did for Sam and Dean, because the second part of it was that Dean had to believe it, and as long as it took him to really lock in to Sam, he never could with John. Not quite, not really, where it counted. We see a deep and true ambivalence about John in Dean, not just when he's older with the benefit of hindsight but all the way back then, as a kid. It comes up over and over: he loves John and also knows, deep, that John doesn't really have his best interests at heart; he knows that John loves him and he knows that John will treat him as a useful tool, to be cared for but discarded if need be. Even in his most devoted moments there's this almost hysterical pleading edge -- like if he just says it loud enough, maybe he can believe it's true. Not the kind of bone-deep certainty that the curse required to lift. He and John would never get to that dawn in the desert in Albuquerque, even with a month's worth of closeness and intimacy in the rearview.

The reason for that is, of course, my pigheadedness about characters' meta roles in the story. God can never reach a true sympathy with Michael or Lucifer. He necessarily has to be external, looking away, his plans always in motion. John always always always has to be most focused on the revenge for Mary or he's not John -- and what's the point, if he's not John?

That leaves us, though, with a fun AU, posited by fic!Sam at some point in one of the latter chapters but here the only option left: John and his two-part child, female most of the time and male when it'll be useful. You can see him fucking Dean into masculinity to be more useful in a fight or to go see a hunter who knows them, and then waiting until the next moonrise for Deanna to appear, who'd be able to do an undercover op or winkle more information out of someone, etc. Maybe John bails for a month or two to work on something and Dean's left alone to meet the equivalent of a Cassie, but it's a guy instead, and when John comes back -- now that's a weird moment, huh? (Dean not able to risk getting too close to that guy, in case he unexpectedly changes, and then... although what a way to break up with someone, lol.) You do then wonder if Dean or John would ever consider going to Sam to see if he could cure it. I wonder if John would think of it and then decide against it. (I wonder if Deanna would show up in Sam's apartment in 2005, stuck as a girl for weeks and weeks because Dad was supposed to call and never did, and look at Sam with his arm around some other girl's neck, and think -- what if--?)

A Father's Duty on AO3

Summary: An encounter with a quantum fissure leaves Picard with more responsibility than he asked for, but he'll do what he always does—his duty.

Chapter 19

Louis can’t help the sudden burst of fear that wriggles in his stomach. He’s not afraid of the bridge or who’s on it, he’s afraid of having a panic attack again and not being able to stop it.

Just before the Turbolift doors open, Louis grabs his father’s hand. When he does, he feels a jolt in his brain like an electric shock. He knows the difference between his real father and this reality’s Jean-Luc Picard—he could tell right away—but holding his father’s hand doesn’t feel different the way hugging him does; holding his hand feels exactly the same as it did the last time he held it nearly 3 years ago.

That causes an entirely new feeling: a warmth and tightness in his chest and throat, like he’s happy but he also might cry. He grips his father’s hand, feels his father squeeze back gently, and then his father steps onto the bridge.

Louis follows, and the first person he sees is Worf. He’s so surprised he stops.

Worf’s at tactical, standing at attention with his gaze fixed over Louis’s head—until he’s looking right at Louis. Louis used to be afraid of Worf, because Worf’s big and his eyebrows are always angry and once Louis heard him growl, but he’s not afraid now—he’s happy, because Worf’s alive. Louis grins. Worf smiles too—just a tiny one, in the corner of his mouth—before looking away again.

And then there’s Geordi. He’s sitting in a chair at the engineering station but he stands and comes over and crouches down, extends his hand and says, “Hi there. We haven’t met yet. I’m Geordi.”

Louis lets go of his father’s hand so he can take Geordi’s. “I know you.”

“Yea, I suppose you do.” Geordi is smiling, but his voice is sad. He feels sorry for Louis. Louis doesn’t want anyone to feel sorry for him. He wants everyone to treat him like Guinan does. Like he’s normal.

“Louis,” his father murmurs in French. “Geordi introduced himself. You should return the courtesy.”

Louis startles. He didn’t mean to be rude to Geordi. He likes Geordi a lot.

“Je m—ahhh." It’s hard remembering to speak English sometimes when both his brain and mouth want to speak French. “I’m sorry, Geordi. I’m Louis.”

“Nice to meet you, Louis,” Geordi says. “Do you want me to call you Louis, or…Louis?”

“Louis,” Louis says firmly. His father always called him Louis, his mother called him Louis. He likes hearing his name both ways, but hearing people who don’t speak French try to pronounce his name that way only makes him want to laugh.

Geordi’s smile isn’t so sad anymore. “Louis it is then.”

Then Geordi stands up and speaks to Louis’s father. “I’ll see you in the conference room, Captain.”

Geordi walks away, and after a nod to Louis’s father, Worf walks away with him. Someone Louis doesn’t recognize takes Worf’s place at tactical. She has two pips on her collar. A lieutenant. Louis takes his father’s hand again and follows him down the ramp. There are two more people Louis doesn’t recognize at ops and navigation. They have one pip each on their collars. Ensigns.

Louis’s father pauses at the bottom of the ramp and turns. Louis glances at the viewscreen—nothing to see but the streaks of light that mean the Enterprise is travelling at warp speed—before he turns too.

Sitting in one of the three chairs below tactical is Deanna. She smiles at him, and Louis smiles back. In the captain’s chair is Data. He must be the senior officer on duty. He stands up from his chair and comes to greet them.

“Good morning, Louis. I hope that you slept well after your visit last night.”

“I did,” Louis says.

At first, he was mad at Data—this Data, because he couldn’t be mad at his Data. But then he just…missed him. Being without his Data makes Louis feel alone in a very strange way. There’s no one here that’s from the same place he is. But this Data said he has all of Louis’s Data’s memories, so Louis tries to pretend like he’s talking to his Data—if this was his Data, what would Louis say to him?

“Papa lets me sleep in his bed. It’s big.”

“I am glad. I know that your cot aboard the shuttlecraft was quite small and very often caused you discomfort.”

Most of the time, the only nice thing about the ships and space stations they stayed at were the big beds.

“I have my room back too,” Louis adds. “And my own big bed. And a desk for drawing—oh, and Doctor Beverly gave me this book. Look!”

He tries to shuffle the anatomy book into his hand but accidentally drops the colored pencils, which scatter in all directions the moment they hit the carpet.

Louis lets an oath slip out without thinking. “Bon sang!”

His father makes an odd noise behind him, like he swallowed a hiccup.

“Je suis désolé. I’ll pick them up,” Louis says, and drops to his knees. Data squats down to help, as does his father.

“I’m not upset about the colored pencils,” his father says. “I was only reacting to your…language.”

Louis pauses. “Papa, it’s…”

He was going to protest that it wasn’t a swear, but it sort of is. He knows his fair share of colorful words, all learned from his father—who was usually promptly chastised by his wife whenever he swore within earshot of Louis. His father never let Louis swear, of course, and neither did Data. Not too badly, at least. ‘Bon sang’ was one of the few he could get away with.

But he’s also learned that, sometimes, it’s better to do as he’s asked and save the argument for later.

“I won’t say it again,” he promises.

His father looks up at him with raised eyebrows. “It’s alright,” he reassures Louis. “You reminded me of my grandfather, that’s all.” And then he switches to French. “Bon sang, Jean-Luc! Get down from there. You’ll break your neck.”

Louis grins and continues the conversation in French. “You told me about your grandfather.”

“Did I ever tell you that once he caught me scaling the side of the barn?”

“No!”

“Well, he did. Let’s just say I was relieved that he was the one who caught me, and not my father.”

Louis frowns. He knows his father’s father wasn’t nice. His father didn’t talk about him very much, but whenever he did he seemed sad. It makes Louis sad, too. And angry.

Data tilts his head to the side—Louis forgot that he can still understand French, even if Louis asked him not to speak it. “Interesting, Captain,” he says. “Is that because—”

“It’s not important, Data,” Louis’s father says, in English now. He gathers the colored pencils both Louis and Data picked up and holds onto them. They all stand, and then his father prompts, “You can show Data the book now.”

Louis does so, and Data bends politely to examine the cover. “I see,” he comments. “Perhaps you are interested in becoming a doctor?”

Louis shakes his head. “No, I still want to be a pilot. I just like the pictures. They’re like blueprints, but for people.”

He also likes the book because Doctor Beverly gave it to him. He likes her a lot. She doesn’t look as much like his mother as he thought she did; her hair is a different shade, her eyes a different shape. Her voices is different, too. But Doctor Beverly makes Louis feel safe the same way his father does.

He doesn’t know why, exactly.

It might be because his father behaves differently around her than he does everyone else. With most people he’s Captain Picard—sometimes a lot, sometimes only a little bit—but with Doctor Beverly he’s not Captain Picard. He’s Jean-Luc. They don’t hold hands or kiss, but they smile at each other like Louis’s mother and father used to—with Doctor Beverly, Louis’s father is the way Louis remembers his father being with his mother. Like his real self.

Realizing something, Louis looks up at her. “I’m sorry I said I don’t want to be a doctor.”

He hopes he didn’t insult her. She smiles at him and touches his hair, then lets her hand fall to his shoulder. “You can be whatever you want to be, Louis. But I have to ask…you want to be a pilot? Not a captain?”

He can tell by her tone that she’s teasing him. Or his father. Or both of them at the same time. Louis doesn’t mind. He grins. “I want to fly the ship.”

“Well, maybe some day you’ll fly this ship.”

Her arm slips around his shoulder and she turns him. His father’s waiting with his hand extended, reaching for Louis. Louis happily takes it and follows him and Doctor Beverly to the ready room.

Plate Up

Been playing a lot of Plate Up with my wife Deanna lately. It’s been a lot of fun. I really like the game flow of this co-op rouge like, simple to just jump into a new game and not worry about it too much. Def recommended for anyone who wants a fun game to play with their partner. We’ve been playing it on PC, she’ll use the keyboard and mouse and I’ll plug in my PS4 controller into her PC.

We did a sort of Christmas themed restaurant yesterday mainly as an excuse to just play some Christmas music lol. Hopefully we can do it again tonight if we find some time.

Few more eps into s1 of tng,

A bit confused by the colors.. Command and ops switched?

Who's in what role.. It seems to switch every ep.

What role is worf, is he pilot? Tho later he's at the back. And who's the communication person.. theres no more chief engineer o.o? Nor there's a science officer on bridge.. I guess it was a one time thing since spock had two roles. Deanna's ability is quite op when she can sense others in another ship, that is quite a distance.

Currently I feel there's too many people on bridge and Picard's character is really weak. He's some what half passive/ quite static, taking everyone's opinions and compiling. I know that's a part of what the captain do but himself isn't generating a lot of thought kinda. One character quite standing out is Data, he's one interesting fella in everyway! I guess character dynamics will gradually work towards something balanced.

Also lowkey not a fan of the current enterprise design. Exterior bulky. Interior very luxurious like a hotel, a tad not tactical. Captain's chair no longer have visual access to all stations, the back is so high up, that'll be a climb in emergency. Also very far from the pilot and nav screen, don't cap used to look at those so he can fine tune the piloting? The spaces throughout ship also feels quite crowded and dense now too.
