Key & SHINee - Stomach Ache

The argument had taken up the entirety of the small break they had between sets. Minho had ushered Taemin away the minute Onew and Key began raising their voices but it was impossible for them not to overhear what was being shouted behind the closed door.

“I said no” Onew said with a degree of finality that would have been enough to convince most people that there was no room left to argue. But Key wasn’t most people and there was no way he was letting a stomach ache get in the way of the rest of their performance.

“And I really don’t care what you have to say” Key shot back, doing his best to keep his voice from wavering. He knew he was being disrespectful but his focus was on finishing the concert. Once they had taken their final bows he’d address the pain in his stomach that had started as a dull ache earlier that day but had since become so severe that it nearly took his breath away.

Of course the rest of the members had noticed his discomfort but it wasn’t until he ran off stage at the conclusion of their second to last set to be sick that they became seriously concerned. Despite Onew’s protest Key pushed past him and out the door, finding Minho and Taemin standing awkwardly just down the hall.

Before anybody could say another word they were given a 30 second warning. Key was content knowing that he got his way - he’d be able to perform the last set and finish out the concert. But as he approached the stage it occurred to him. He’d been so focused on his argument with Onew and making sure that he’d be able to continue performing that he failed to give consideration to how exactly he was doing to make it through until the end.

It felt to Key like a miracle. He had managed to make it through their last set, purposely avoiding the rest of the members during the quick pause before the encore. But by the time they finished the final song of the encore Key was exhausted. Plastering himself into Taemin’s side, his body went through the motions. The smiles, the waves, the finger hearts and flying kisses. He’d been at this long enough that he didn’t even have to think about it. It was an automatic reflex at this point. His mind, on the other hand, was solely focused on one thing and one thing alone - how much longer he’d have before he got sick again, silently praying that he’d at least be able to make it off stage before he humiliated himself in front of the fans.

Luckily for Key, Taemin seemed to get the message loud and clear, giving Key’s shoulder a quick squeeze before heading offstage where Key instantly grabbed at the nearest wall with one hand while ripping at this stage outfit with the other, desperately trying to get some air.

“Hyung, let me help you” Taemin said quietly, trying to undo the myriad of tiny buttons that went down the front of Key’s shirt. He had gotten about halfway through when Key sank down the wall to the floor, clutching at his stomach in a way that could only mean one thing.

Just as Taemin was about to panic Onew stepped off stage with Minho, instantly grabbing the nearest waste paper basket before deftly sliding it in front of Key just in time for him to vomit.

“It’s okay” Onew repeated in Key’s ear, doing his best to calm his dongsaeng. Minho has sprinted off in search of a cold bottle of water as Taemin staggered back a few steps, feeling a bit lightheaded himself as he watched his hyung struggle to catch his breath.

Within a few minutes Key’s nausea had abated. Minho took the opportunity to wordlessly hand over the bottle of water he had found.

“Don’t say anything” Key muttered between sips.

“I wasn’t planning on it” Minho replied with a smirk, relieved that Key was at least feeling well enough to bicker with him.

There was a moment of slightly tense silence between the members as Key continued to drink his water.

“I thought we were past this” Onew finally said. There was a sense of sadness in his voice that caught the rest off guard. When nobody responded he continued. “We’ve talked about this so many times. We’ve been doing this for nearly half of our lives. When something is the matter you say something.”

Key shifted uneasily under the glare of the rest of the members. He immediately regretted the harsh words that he had exchanged with Onew earlier that evening. The memory of Onew begging them to come to him when they needed somebody and to be honest with one another when they weren’t feeling their best physically, mentally, or emotionally quickly came to Key’s mind. He had made a promise to Onew that day that he failed to keep.

“Hyung I’m so sorry” Key replied, tears visibly forming in his eyes.

Onew instantly dropped to the floor next to Key and wrapped an arm around his shoulder.

“How’s your stomach” Onew asked as Key laid his head on his hyung’s shoulder.

“Hurts” Key mumbled in response. “But it’s a little better than before.”

“Do you think you’re going to be sick again?” Onew was relieved when Key shook his head. “Alright, then I’ll take you back to your place. We’ve got a week off so you can rest and get back on your feet.”

Key sighed as Onew and Minho helped him to his feet. “For what it’s worth, hyung. I really do care what you have to say. And thank you. For everything.”

You sat at the event looking at everyone, after today you and Jinki would split ways after fooling his family members into thinking he had a partner and wouldn’t come to the event alone, it had dragged on for months and during those few months you had mangled to fall in love with you and at some point, your words held truth in them when you spoke lovingly towards him, but he never knew, or if he did, he never said anything, the evening was coming to an end, and you would be leaning soon.

“Hey, are you okay?” He asks, sitting down next to you, you nod your head, giving him a small smile, he could see the sadness behind it, the sadness drifting around in your eyes.

“Yes, I’m okay,” You say, he slowly nods his head and leans closer to you, his hand pressing against your knee. “When can we leave, I’m feeling a little tired from the day's events.”

“Y/n… you don’t need to lie to me,” He whispers. “I can tell something’s not right,” You bite the inside of your cheeks. “So, we can go… and then we can talk about what’s bothering you, okay?” You nod your head, and stand from your chair, he follows and hooks his arm with yours, you go around, saying your farewells to everyone before exiting the venue and making your way to his car, he opens the car door for you, and you climb in, he closes the door, and he makes his way around the car. “What’s wrong?” He closes his door and puts the key into the ignition.

“Did you enjoy yourself?” You softly ask, your voice almost cracking as you spoke, you put your safety on, avoiding looking at him, you hear him click his safety into place.

“I did, did you have fun tonight?” He asks, you could feel your heart drop to the pit of your stomach.

“I… I didn’t mean just tonight, Jinki,” You whisper, keeping your head low. “I meant the last few months,” He begins driving, not wanting anyone to see or hear your conversation, it was between you and him, not anyone else, whatever this was, it was between the two of you, not anyone else.

“I did… everything we did… all the memories,” He says. “It was all fun, even if it was pretended,” You nod your head, feeling tears brimming in your eyes, all pretend, everything was pretend, except the last few weeks… you weren’t pretending anymore, the ride slowly became quiet after that, he didn’t want to push, but he wanted answers, as you neared your apartment, you start to build up the courage.

“You know… we might have… we were just pretending to be lovers,” You begin to say, lifting your head to look at him, he stops in front of your apartment building and turns his head to look at you. “But I’m not pretending anymore…” Your fingers dig into the fabric of your clothes, twisting it between your fingers. “I need to know if you feel the same way.” You held your gaze with him, and you waited and waited until you couldn’t take the silence anymore. “Forget I said anything, enjoy your birthday in a few hours, Jinki,” You open the door and climb out, you begin making your way towards the front door of the building, for your hand to be grabbed and you to be turned around, your other hand comes down on his chest, and you look up at him with eyes wide open. “Ji—”

“No… no, I’m not letting you go like that,” He says. “I’m not letting us split apart like this, not when you don’t know my feelings either,” His words were almost rushed as he spoke, you could hear the emotion behind them. “The last few weeks, they were different, I know you felt them also… otherwise you wouldn’t have said what you said, I felt it also… the pretending all vanished, our actions… became genuine,” You could hear his voice almost cracking, his eyes held so much emotion in them as he spoke. “And right now, I refuse to let you go up there, thinking I don’t feel anything in return, that I pretended that everything between us… was all for show when the last few weeks weren’t.” His other hand moves over yours, moving it over his heart. “Do you feel that?” You could feel how fast his heart was beating. “That… that is me confessing to you that I’m scared of losing you, scared to let you go after all these months and that I want to make us officially official,” You take in a shaky breath, your own heart beating faster.

“Jinki…” You whisper, you could feel the tears that had brimmed your eyes starting to slip from you.

“I’m not ready to let this end, I want to spend my birthday with you, I want to spend Christmas with you, I want to spend New Year with you, I want to spend many years with you, Y/n…” He says, you watch a tear slip from his eyes and down his cheek. “I’m not leaving tonight… I want to spend my time with you tonight, I want to be here, I want you in my arms,” You slowly nod your head, taking in a gasp of air.

“Then ask me out… properly,” You whisper, he smiles, even through the tears, the emotions in his eyes shift to something else.

“Do you want to officially go out with me, Y/n?” He asks. “I promise to be better than the pretend boyfriend I was,” You chuckle, moving your hand he was holding onto to your cheeks, wiping the tears from your cheeks, his thumbs quickly join in, clearing your cheeks. “I’ll while your tears for you as well.”

“Jinki…” You whisper, you move your hand to his cheek, whipping the tear on his cheeks. “I’ll do the same,” He chuckles and leans forward. “Yes… I want to officially go out with you,” He smiles and leans closer to you, he tilts his head slightly and brushes his lips against yours, your eyes shut as you lean into the kiss, your first real kiss with him, not one that felt forced, or play pretend, this… this was real/

As the clock ticks down to midnight, you were both laying in your bed, you were cuddled up to him and his arm wrapped around you, you glance at the clock before climbing over him and straddling his waist, he opens his eyes to look up at you, his hands reaching out to you, only for you to grab them and pin them down to the bed, you lean over him, your noses touching, your eyes catch sight of the clock striking midnight.

“Happy Birthday, Jinki,” You whisper, his smile widens, and he tilts his head slightly, pressing his lips against yours,
