THE BASEMENT RETURNS
By semi-popular demand, The Basement will return with weekly screenings throughout March! Starting Sunday the 3rd at the usual hour (10pm CEST), there will be a total of five movies screened throughout the month. Four of them have already been set, but the last one will be audience pick!
SCHEDULE
March 3rd: [REC] (2007)
March 17th: Creep (2014)
March 24th: The Blair Witch Project (1999)
March 31st: One Cut of the Dead (2017)
As you might guess, the theme for this batch is found footage horror. I tried to keep it diverse in terms of sub-genre, language, budget, etc so that there's hopefully something for everyone, but I've only seen [REC] and Creep of these four, so no promises.
If you have a suggestion for the final screening, let me know! There will be a poll made of all the submissions on March 17.
Detailed posts will be made in advance to the screenings, but the info that goes for all of them is that there will be a link shared ~20 minutes in advance, and once again that the timeslot is 10pm CET.
Hope to see you there!

Saw "One Cut of the Dead," fantastic film!! Type of movie that makes you want to run around afterwards.
But... I'm gonna have a hard time recommending it without sounding like a "it takes 100 episodes for this to get good" anime fan. Because for the first 40 minutes before the twist you might think the movie is bad, you might think the movie is shit, you might even want to turn off the movie. But you have to stick with it!!!

[Image description: A digital drawing based on the film One Cut of the Dead. It's a close-up of the arms of Ko and Chinatsu as the former approaches her, arms in a raised zombie pose. She clenches an axe which she pushes towards him. Both of them have blood splattered on them. Director Higurashi stands behind the two, hands clutching a camera which is recording, its red tally light standing out. His face is blurred into pixels but it's still clear he's smiling wide. The sketches are not coloured, the background peaking through. They have a dark brown lineart while the background is a sickly yellow that reddens around the edges. In the same red as the tally light, the words "one cut of the dead" are written down the right side of the piece, stacked on one another. The font is irregular and bleeds down. On the other side, there's an larger tally light which also bleeds.]

Most films more than a year old I don't bother holding back on spoilers for when filmposting. Spoilers, as a rule, are a function of the Franchise/Industrial complex and while I hate to ruin a surprise, a good piece of art is good regardless of whether or not the twist has been revealed to you beforehand. This said, I'm absolutely not giving away the twist in One Cut Of The Dead.
One Cut of The Dead, a film about filmmakers making a zombie movie when the unexpected (totally expected) happens and they're attacked by zombies, is in many ways a perfect film.
It's shot artistically, the writing is tight, and it's intensely funny. Don't go into this expecting a horror film as much as a comedy. The actors all give great deliveries, every clue at the beginning ends up a loose end tied at the end, and in finishing it I completely understand how this got to be Japan's most successful independent film.
It's been a long time since I've seen this sort of metatextual commentary pulled off this well. In fact I'll venture to say that I've simply never seen it pulled off this well full stop. Find yourself a copy and watch it, this is a must see in my book.

Halloween Day Eleven
I am going to make my first horror movie recommendation of Spooky Season an easy one.  Kamera Wo Tomeruna! aka One Cut of the Dead starts out on a shoot for a low-budget zombie movie where things go very, very badly.  The lead actors are not very good, the makeup lady is a little too into self-defense and the director is a tyrant.  And then there are the zombies.
And THEN, you find out that something else is going on entirely....
To even my most nervous friends out there, trust me, once you get to the wild ride finale of this movie, which is seems like a zombiepalooza but is actually a love letter to filmmaking, family, horror movies, and the power of team work, I promise you the biggest smile a you’ve ever gotten from the undead.  It is truly a fucking delight.
The link leads to the IMDB page and a preview.
If you want to be added to my taglist please let me know.

Basically the only time I'm not riddled with stress right now, is when I'm actively doing an activity around people or, you know, stoned, so. Cannabis, the unsung hero of the whole Situation, I probably would have exploded by now otherwise.
In other news, the retirement village behind my home has started re-roofing the main building. How do I know this? They started at 7am yesterday. And today. Just machinery and hammering and construction noise. Like the time I woke up because of a noise that sounded like a garage being demolished, only to find that it was, in fact, a carport being demolished.
