You know, I missed the entire discourse on tumblr
First time I saw the term "proship" I was like "Pro shipping? Heck yeah! Let people ship what they want, I'm all pro shipping!"
And honestly?
Yeah. That still.
Just like. Leave people alone if they ship something you don't like? Idk what the big deal is tbh
Y'all need to learn what "fiction" means

This really shouldn’t be a hot take, and I’m saying this as a Mina Harker ‘kin’ and the JonMina and Lucy/Mina shipper of… awhile (age 12).
You’re really not hurting anyone by shipping fictional characters.
It’s not canon and there’s nothing healthy about Dracula/Jonathan, but even Re: Dracula had an episode of all the queer ways to read Dracula and it’s extremely bi and the text implies lots of things Stoker probably didn’t intend. Your art would make Stoker turn in his grave (affectionate) my South Asian bi Mina would make Stoker turn his grave, hell, @see-arcane and @marghen’s art would make Stoker turn in his grave (affectionate).
Keep going! Unhealthy in fiction is not sufficient moral justification to bully an irl person.
Hannigram is unhealthy, Loustat is unhealthy. I like seeing you on my dashboard. Don’t give yo because some anonymous trolls want to gate keep a public domain gothic horror novel from you.
Best wishes
M
Thank you so much for the kind and thoughtful words 🖤. Sometimes it is hard to keep in mind that not the whole world hates me. And honesty, you're damn right. I love to provoke and stir up some spirits with my content, if it makes people think about such topics (which I think is important). I really appreciate your support

you know,,, i saw a video once that i think is interesting. a lot of the shippers especially those that ship a BTS member with some member of another girl group are born out of the idea of inserts. it is known ggs are marketed as “potential boyfriends” to fans while ggs are marketed as a self insert. you pick the girl that most fits what you wish to be - this is why they have very specific images. this is very evident with blackpink’s marketing. the reason there’s a huge group of shippers from that fandom with BTS is because their pick their favorite BP girl with the boy from BTS they’d like to date. It’s just that simple. And they obsessed over it because it’s a more reachable alternative than dreaming it could be you. It’s not a secret Tae and JK are the most popular members in a girls fantasy type of way. This is why Tae is shipped with every single one of them. There’s a portion that 100% believed in Jisoo x Tae. There’s also a big portion of lisk*ok shippers that think they have the “same aesthetic” or something just like there’s a huge portion that ship rose and jk are believe they’re a thing.
shippers will never go away because even if you seriously don’t believe it - it’s not about believing it or not but because it’s an insert. a fantasy. and the whole ta*nnie thing just made that side believe their fantasies were correct the whole time and pushed more theories.
Hi anon!
Haha, you are gonna send the ‘you-ship-taekook-because-you-want-them-for-yourself’ to my inbox 😂. What you’re saying does make more sense than people telling me I want them together because that way I know they won’t be with a woman… or something 🤔.
I think there’s a lot to it actually. Boybands and girlbands are traditionally marketed to appeal to girls. Pr relationships like Taennie (and many more) are designed with this in mind. Taennie was the ultimate ‘kpop prince meets kpop princess’. It’s also very easy to construct.. just look at the jewelry they used to connect Tae and Jennie together.. very much marketed to young girls as well, who all think sharing jewelry is the top sign of two people being in a relationship.
Shipping will never go away because the companies actually use it to their advantage… and because everyone loves the idea of love.

hello vio! i don't know if you've answered this before but what made you ship steddie in the first place? was it a specific moment from the show? and more in general, do you have specific dynamics you like in terms of ships? i'm really curious about your OTPs (is my age showing using this term?) in other fandoms, if you have any (and if you want to share, no pressure)
i haven't answered this before!! but i love thinking about it.
i've enjoyed tossing steve into ships since s1. so it tracks that steddie would pique my interest. but if i'm honest, when i first watched s4, i liked eddie and nancy. i just!!! i liked how he helped her onto the boat lmao. that's the kind of thing that gets me (and it was a fun twist on eddie throwing his vest at steve. guess i liked jealous!eddie from the start).
but once eddie and steve had their little forest stroll, i thought, okay, eddie has chemistry with most people. so while i write steddie, i read for a lot of different pairings. i like allllll the possibilities. like when i find a rarepair i'd never considered, and someone writes them and it WORKS? and for that brief period of time, i'm like fully immersed in it? nothing beats it.
some ship dynamics i enjoy: we're stronger together. you make me want to be a better person. my love for you scares me (and even though it scares me, i can't imagine stopping).
i like it when there's a character who's tough on the outside but is secretly soft, and when they don't laugh all that often but when they do, it's with each other (looking at you rick & michonne from twd). i like the 'you're terrible but i'm also kind of terrible so i guess we work' dynamic (ian and mickey from shameless). i like 'no one gets me quite like you, but our timing is shit' (marianne and connell from normal people, fleabag and the priest). also some non-romantic dynamics like 'we're amazing partners and i respect you above all others' (joan and sherlock from elementary, hardy and miller from broadchurch).
thank you for this very very fun question!

Here’s the thing about romance and shipping: I treat it like icing on a cake.
I’m not typically going to go out of my way to eat a whole container of icing on its own, that’s not my thing. I want cake. The cake should be the star. And there should definitely be more cake than icing.
But like. I still want icing. And sometimes it drives me nuts when I see a perfectly good cake that would just be that much tastier with a little icing, but people are coming out of the woodwork to scoff at anyone who wants it.
“The cake should be appreciated for what it is. Stop being so obsessed with icing. It’s not about icing. It’s about the cake.” I can only speak for myself, really, but I don’t really think people are asking for the thing to be so drenched in icing that you can no longer taste the cake.
Yeah, sometimes I do just want cake. But a lot of the time a good source material…I don’t think it would be ruined with a splash of romance. So many good stories put emphasis on human connection, no matter the genre, and romance is a form of human connection that I think is valid to want. It’s not everything. But sometimes it really adds something.
And if I go seek out fanfic that’s all shipping—it’s because I’m trying to add a little icing onto a cake I already like.

Tbh, if the majority of fics that are tagged with a ship just have that relationship as a "background pairing," I don't think said ship should be a considered a popular ship. No matter how big the number may be of fics that they "appear in."
(This applies to both platonic and romantic relationships.)

Ships;
Going over the common ships for my muses and how I feel about them personally. Note: things can typically change with an individual portrayal, but these are my impressions from canon and how they relate to my portrayal. They are in random order...
Zuko
Zutara: I hate it. Sure, Zuko is easy and will be with just about anyone who likes him, but I just find this ship grosses me out in a way I can't articulate well. It feels disrespectful to Katara's feelings for Aang and I really like them.
Zuko/Mei: it was stupid when it happened and I'm glad they broke up.
Zuko/Jet: OTP
Zuko/Sokka: maybe maybe maybe
Zutoph: she seems young compared to him? Regardless of actual age, I don't really see it.
My fav ship for Zuko is a random crossover ship I write with my wife and it's with Elsa from "Frozen."
Sessomaru
S*ssr*n: big no.
S*ssinu: wtf no. Block me.
Sesskik: fucking no. Block me. Sesskag is the same level of ick.
Sesskagu: viable, but Kagura deserves better.
Sessomaru/Naraku: maybe maybe maybe.
My favorite ship for Sessomaru is no ship. Maybe a queer platonic partnership with SOMEBODY. A crossover or OC could work, but please keep in mind he is not interested in sex.
Anakin
Anidala: his queen, his BAE. OTP, even if they're so toxic I don't care I love them.
Obikin: get the fuck out. NOTP. Let them be complicated and platonic. I HC they are ridiculously intimate, but with zero sex or sexual energy. They shower together in a single stall and shave each other, but they don't see each other sexually and I will not write anything simple with them I refuse.
Anisoka: NO.
Vader/Sidious: now if you want a fucked up master apprentice ship, this is the one. Maximum bad vibes.
Anakin could have any kind of random romance with most people, so I won't list them all out individually. But Aayla comes to mind as someone he could have been close to and possibly had an experimental phase with. /Shrug.
Inuyasha
Inukag: I have mixed feelings about what we see in canon, but overall, I like them. Idk if I would wanna write this ship or not, it greatly depends on the Kagome.
Inukik: basically the same feeling as Inukag.
Inuyasha/Koga: top tier possibilities.
Inumir: maybe maybe maybe.
Inuyasha is also someone who could end up with just about anyone. I personally hate the whole soulmates crap, as it ends up feeling cheap and lazy and lacking in autonomy.
Link
Zelink: OTP
Link/Ganon: it could work in the right circumstances.
Link/Zelda/Ganon: OT3
Link/Mipha: sorry but no... They have no chemistry and Mipha has no character... I'll still give it a maybe though because individual portrayals may change my mind.
Link/Sidon: It just doesn't feel fair to Sidon. Link will break his heart.
It's very difficult to ship with Link. He hardly ever lets people in. You need to build up so much trust and communication with him and build up to it for maybe years or through different lifetimes idk. He also isn't interested in sex, so there is no seducing him. You have to win his heart.
Vash
Vashwood: OTP OTP!!!
Vashmeryl: GTFO. platonic love only. I viscerally hate this ship and no amount of canon divergence is gonna change how I feel.
Plantcest: NO GTFO. I don't have an issue with Knives taking advantage of Vash, but that's what it is. Vash could NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS be happy, comfortable, or satisfied with this and I hate to see abuse played as romance. Abuse as abuse, I have no issues with.
Vash/Frank Marlo: tbh that one episode in the 98 Trigun awakened this ship and I really like it a lot.
Vash is not easy to actually get close to, even though he is horny all the time and wants to have relationships more than anything, his fear keeps him away. He will come onto anyone relentlessly and then back out at the last minute.
Livio
Livio is aroace and only into platonic vibes.
Wolfwood is his best friend. He loves him.
Vash is someone he cares about, but can't really hang around easily.

If your otp randomly turned out (read: got retconned) to be related, what would you do?
Imagine you've been shipping ZoSan for 20 years (as I have), and Oda decided to be funny and made them, idk pick something random, first degree cousins, would you continue shipping them?

also i HATE when fandoms make up ships just for the sake of making them up. the biggest example i know is reed900, those guys never interacted and barely had ten minutes of screentime combined (and that's being generous), why do we have one fan-created full-length movie and multiple fanmade spin-offs based on them?
or in the TADC fandom, everyone immediately started saying "pomni and ragatha are in love" or "jax and gangle/jax and zooble enemies to lovers" or "caine x kinger >>>" or literally ANY PAIRING YOU CAN THINK OF. just for the sake of shipping. (for the record, i ship royalteeth; these are just examples)
now, am i saying i am against shipping culture altogether? absolutely not. i love shipping my silly fictional couples, often they are a source of comfort for me. but you cannot deny that some ships are made just for the sake of having characters in relationships - as if they wouldn't be good or even better off without one! who the hell came up with pomni x jax? they don't even have chemistry, are you just shipping them because main girl + main boy = love? is that really a good base for your ship?
this may just be because the concept of romance is beyond me as an aromantic person, but i swear, i am so tired of some of these ships. i do love a good crackship (lord knows what i've done with yansim, you would call me a hypocrite if you saw my fics) and main boy x main girl can always be done correctly (mostly if it's canon though, and not just for the sake of having the two main people in a straight ship) - conrisa (connor x risa from the unwind dystology) for example is an amazing protag x protag ship, but where conrisa excels, miracolev (miracolina x lev from the same books) falls flat for me;
but sometimes i do feel like shipping is done just for the sake of having a character in a romantic relationship, and not because the ship makes sense, has chemistry or interest in one another - just because romance is the way to go, i guess. another example is hank x connor from D:BH, my god, where the fuck did that one come from? it ruins the aspect of both characters as their stories have nothing to do with romance and they even have a father-son-like relationship! jeez people
and especially in media like TADC or hitman, which do not focus on romance at all but on existential crisises (TADC) and murder and moral questions (hitman), we do not need all the pomni x jax, gangle x jax, diana x 47, diana x lucas etc. nonsense. just enjoy the thing. just enjoy the individual character.
if this comes off wrong, i'm sorry - i have a lot of thoughts about this, and i cannot word it better <//3 i don't mean disrespect as, as i've said, i love a good crackship or just ship in general... it's just... why do we always have to ship everything and everyone?

Opinion on shipping Raoul/Erik?!?!!? Does this sound like an abhorrent concept to you?!?!?! Or not?!?!?!? Or do you have no idea what I'm even fucking talking about?!?!!?
I am sorry anon, but it seems that I am uncultured. A quick google search tells me this is about the Phantom of the Opera, with which I really am not familar. I do know Lindsey Stirling performing the main theme on her violin, but that is about it.
As about the ship itself; again, I don't know anything about it, forgive me. That said, my blog is strictly Proship - I firmly believe that it is fine to ship whatever you want, as long as it is fictional and doesn't harm anyone IRL. I would never deem a ship I personally don't like "abhorrent" either.
Feel free to tell me more about it, if you want, but yeah, that is about all that I can say. Thanks for the ask tho! 🖤

How to tell the ship has ascended to flagship status, proposed criteria:
at least one, probably more, fanart inspired by Klimt's The Kiss painting
it's monday, 4am, choose your fighter: heart-wrenching, angsty, slow-burn canon fic that ran over 100k three chapters ago and/or sprawling low-stakes fluff fix-it au series and/or devastating one-shot tagged MCD that leaves you ugly-crying
ship playlist(s) complete with cover art
probably more than one completely unhinged tumblr post of "what if they were worms" variety
incredibly specific ship trope ao3 tag becomes canonical

i’m probably going to get mauled for this but
i really think people need to stop self-flagellating themselves over the thought of liking a m/f ship. congrats on enjoying a dynamic where one character happens to be male and the other is female! have fun! no one is going to revoke your queer card for liking a m/f ship, even if the writers intended it to be the most cishet of pairings! you are allowed to like m/f ships, please stop with the self-flagellation. we’re here to have fun in the fandom, not agonize whether or not you’re‘queer enough’ because you enjoy m/f ships

Some people ask “how can you ship that” with the utmost bewilderment like they expect everyone to only ever enjoy the purest and most sensible of canon dynamics and it’s like how much of a snob are you
Good for you for only picking the finest grade-A grass-fed beef all the time but my man sometimes a person just wants a cheap-ass McDonald’s hamburger

gntm fans give too much credit to sexual attraction/tension when it comes to shipping. those things arent what makes a good romance/relationship
while it is true that only sticking to physical attraction or forming highly emotional relationships out of traumatic/high pressure situations aren't a good base for romantic relationships, friendship/sincere love can absolutely start that way, BUT a lot of work has to be done by both consenting parties.
In real life people would have to get past the "oooh they are pretty" "ooh they saved me from destruction therefore they are pretty" phase and transition to a much deeper acquaintanceship/friendship. It is very much recommended make an effort to learn about the other’s real personality/hopes/dreams/weaknesses and befriend, spend a shtton of time with the other person a bit more (in good and bad) before one can truly say that they love them. Also the other person would have to do the same/walk the distance for the attracted party too. If they truly want to make it work as a relationship.. or even just friendship...then it takes two people at least.
There is no stopping anyone from being attracted to those kind of dynamics in fiction though! and that's fine! Cause it's fiction!
For one, it makes for interesting conflict in storytelling. And I see that's what makes those other ships so popular (if we're just going by what the other anon has said). I mean as long as the shtty stuff in the dynamic is acknowledged then, why not? Go ship it! Go write about it! You’re very sexy if you do! 😘

In 1944 a kitten named George (short for General Electric) was saved from drowning by a U.S. Navy crew member. George was then photographed and given a liberty card and detailed health record. Source.
