A Spot In The Sun (Olivia Baker x OC)
Tumblr media
Summary: It’s that time where Harper and Olivia must go back to Evergreen to pay tribute to Hannah. It’s tradition, though this time it’s made just a bit more special.
Word Count: 1,002
Warnings: Angst, grief, but also a bit fluffy

It was their third year making the some, long trip back to Evergreen. It had become a tradition for them at this point. Making the journey itself was something neither of them relished, but that was a small annoyance in the grander scheme of the trip. Both of them would willingly cross the entire globe on foot if meant remembering and honoring Hannah.
The first night in town went how it always did; the jet lagged pair checking into their usual hotel, solemnly quiet, wanting nothing but rest and comfort in one another's presence, falling asleep together to the sound of some old sitcom on the tv. Harper stirred a couple of times in the night, while Olivia remained out like a light the whole night through. This was also typical for them. Despite Harper's own exhaustion, she often couldn’t fully settle in during these trips back to Evergreen. Besides Hannah, the town still had other ghosts for her that she wasn’t as eager to revisit. Thus far, she had been lucky not to cross paths with any of them.
By the time morning broke, they were back to themselves, at least, as much as they ever were while they were back here. The sky was gray and overcast, threatening a light morning shower. Olivia frowned as she realized they were without an umbrella. They really should have looked at the weather before they’d packed.
After a modest breakfast ordered through room service, the two dressed and donned light jackets before going out to their rental car. They’d do nothing to prevent the rain from soaking through if they stayed out in it long enough, but the jackets at least provided another layer of protection from the cold and the wet before it reached their skin.
Evergreen not being big enough to have its own hotel, they were in the next town over, and the drive was thankfully short. They made a brief detour and parked in front of the old general store, surprised that they still maintained enough business to be open and dashed in through the sprinkles to pick up an umbrella. "You know, this almost reminds me of the night I found you standing at the end of the driveway, looking at the house in the pouring rain," Olivia commented.
"Yeah, that…wasn’t a good day for me, but I made it through, largely thanks to you." Olivia smiled sadly, put her arm around Harper and rubbed her arm reassuringly through her rain dappled jacket. That hadn’t been a great day for either of them, but they’d had each other. And Olivia thinks, just for a second, that maybe that day was why they still had each other today.
After making their purchases, they decided to walk the rest of the way with Olivia holding the large, new umbrella over them, and Harper carrying the single sunflower they’d picked out to lay at Hannah's gravesite. The soft pitter patter of the raindrops hitting the umbrella filled the comfortable silence between them. It only took them ten minutes until the cemetery was within their view. The sky looked brighter that way, like the rain was starting to let up. Once up the hill far enough, Harper caught sight of something marvelous. "Liv, look!"
Olivia followed Harper's finger as she pointed over to the cemetery. And then she saw it, the same thing that had caught Harper's eye. There was Hannah's grave, a streak of sunlight illuminating it through a gap in the clouds and it shone off the reflective surface of the polished headstone, as if Hannah was welcoming their visit. In front of the stone, where they eventually came to stand, the drizzle persisted, slow and lazy, but still there.
Harper bent down to lay the sunflower at the edge of her headstone, pausing on her way back up to let her fingers graze gently over the top of the smooth stone, the closest either of them could ever get to touching Hannah ever again. Olivia usually said a few words when they were beside her grave, but this time no words came to her. So, in the silence, Harper took Olivia's hand, letting Olivia thread their fingers together as they both looked on at the engraving they each knew by heart and the bright yellow petals of the sunflower. Each of them were lost in their own memories of her, some shared, some uniquely their own.
They didn’t even notice when the drops stopped falling on the material of the umbrella that remained above their heads. The rain had moved on to be well behind them now, and a faint rainbow had appeared over Evergreen's cemetery. Though stray tears had fallen from their eyes, they now turned to one another and shared a smile of both sadness and hope. Hannah would always be a big part of their lives, even with each additional year she was gone. She brought them together, though she never could have intended that to be the end result, they knew she wouldn’t be mad about it. How many times had she walked into the room and said, "How are my two favorite people?"
In lieu of Olivia's usual speech, Harper decided on a few words to say. "We’re good, Hannah. We miss you, but your two favorite people, we’re doing alright." It was short and sweet, but that’s really all they needed. It’s what Hannah would want to know.
Another tear fell from Olivia's eye and she leaned in, placing a grateful kiss to Harper's temple before she took down the umbrella, shaking the rest of the water gently from it. There are a lot of people who would think it’s silly to make the journey across the country to spend an hour at someone's grave before turning around and going right back home, but not them. To Harper and Olivia, the trip was always worth it. They’d leave now, but they’d be back to visit Hannah in her spot in the sun.

𖢷 ۪ ࣪ ﹙☆﹚ JAY needs to prove to his parents that he is not that same reckless boy he was before. OLIVIA needs help to keep her loved bakery in business. So, when their paths cross, it’s like the gods are calling for them to do the only, extremely mature solution to both of their problems: a fake dating agreement. Let’s just hope that no one decides to look deeper into this rabbit hole, because that would be a huge problem, wouldn’t it?

When Amanda returned from her trip, she came back with another report of a victim and since that claim also came with the clear bribery of Mr. Bauer, the squad had no choice but to return to the man and get the details straight. At least this time, he wouldn't deny the story when he was brought into the precinct. This time, he and his daughter would be speaking with Rafael and Amanda, see if it would switch their stories around talking to different people.
"So I gave this Marcie girl five grand. She had no memory of what happened. It was the same cockamamie story Carla told," Bauer had shrugged his shoulders like they were talking about something casual.
"But...you hadn't heard Carla's story yet, and Macie-Lynn was six months ago," Amanda pointed out the error in his explanation.
Baker stumbled over his words. "Well, I may have the timeline confused…"
Cordelia stepped in to save her father. "My father runs a multi-billion dollar company fielding hundreds of emails and phone calls a day. You can't expect him to remember who said what when."
"Very true," Amanda agreed then added, with a sweet smile, "But I'm pretty sure he'd remember handing out bonuses the way these girls have claimed you have. Money tends to be hard to forget, especially if it was linked to somebody else coming to you about Shakir, right?"
Of course neither Bauer nor Cordelia had much to say after that, much less when Rafael took over. "Mr. Bauer, you're looking at witness bribery. Think hard."
"Okay, actually, we are done here," Cordelia said quickly, but her father had other ideas.
"No, no, no. There was a gold digger, a black girl...works in retail. I didn't believe a word she said."
Cordelia looked like she was ready to put her own hand over her father's mouth but the damage had already been done. Later that day, Olivia would send Amanda and Montserrat to go talk to that very girl about the situation.
"I like working here. I don't want no part of this," Tiana said first and foremost when she'd been pulled to the side in her store.
"So you think if you talk to the police, you're gonna lose your job?" Montserrat asked. It was a fair assumption to make based on who the biggest star of the company was.
Tiana nodded her head. "Mr. Bauer said Shakir is the golden goose, a role model for my community. Look around, we all have our jobs because of Shakir." And of course proving her point, the store was currently packed with customers. "I'm on a store manager track here."
"And he told you that after you went to him?" Amanda made the next assumption. She wasn't that far off. Tiana reluctantly nodded again. "Listen, honey, from personal experience? Pretending something didn't happen doesn't make it go away."
Montserrat blinked and instinctively looked at Amanda differently. With her, Montserrat could never be sure that whatever Amanda was saying was for the case or because it was actually true. The way Amanda said that right now left Montserrat wondering the same thing. Was she being honest? That shouldn't matter right now, though.
Montserrat shook her head to forget about her thoughts. "Hey Tiana, it's best if you just talk to us with the truth." The woman still seemed reluctant but after a bit more insistence, she started to speak.

"Hey," Montserrat strolled into Rafael's office with a file in hand, that of their latest victim. She dropped the file on his desk, motioning him to read it and when he didn't, she shrugged. "What?"
Rafael was giving her a look like he was trying to figure her out and that was puzzling given this was a strictly professional visit. Everything he needed to figure out was already on the file. "That's all you're saying?" he asked, still sounding like he was testing her.
"What...else am I supposed to say?"
Rafael tilted his head head at her, eyes narrowing for a moment. "Is this a test?"
"If it is, can you let me in on it because I have no idea what you're talking about."
His face fell flat. "Montserrat."
"What?" she almost laughed out of sheer confusion. "Didn't Olivia tell you we were dropping this off?"
"Yeah, I just...I didn't think you were coming to drop it off."
"Why wouldn't I?" Montserrat stiffened when an idea popped into her head. "Did you...did you want to cut our interactions short now? For the whole contract we had to sign?"
"What? No!" Rafael sighed. Even though sometimes he would admit (only to himself though) that he liked her challenging ways, he didn't want to play it right now. "I thought you were upset with me because of the...meeting the parents stuff?"
"Oooh! Well, you could've just said that! You let your mouth run all the time, dammit!" Montserrat huffed, missing the way he rolled his eyes at her. "After thinking about it, I decided to give you the space you need to really consider it."
"Seriously?" Rafael raised an eyebrow at her. Her giving something up like this wasn't exactly her way.
Montserrat shrugged her shoulders. "I actually talked to Carisi about it, so you can thank him for this. You should probably start a tally mark about this—"
"Okay, okay," he said quickly, waving that matter off for the moment. "So...you're okay for now?"
"Yes," she sighed. "I'm not going to pressure you. You know what I'd like for us to do but you have to do it out of your own accord. If you think we're not ready for that then...we'll be ready later on."
"And you'd be fine with that?"
"Yes, so long as we're fine," Montserrat's expression was cautious when she spoke.
Rafael realized she was waiting for him to confirm that, yes, they would be fine. Challenging as she was, she could also be a little bit naive sometimes. "Yes," he smiled at her. "Of course we are, and we will be. Thank you."
Montserrat nodded at him. "So...that file?" she tapped a finger over said file. "I told Liv this would be a professional visit. It's the only way she let me come on my own."
Rafael laughed. "She'll be hanging this over our heads for a while." He picked up the file to finally read it.
"Better her than anyone else," Montserrat said.
Rafael would agree. "You know I'm doing my best to avoid Casey around these parts?" It was Montserrat's turn to laugh. "She's like a version of you, only with the same skills as me."
Montserrat smirked. "Now imagine if I did all this for a living?" She made a gesture to his office. "You wouldn't be able to take me."
Rafael looked up from the file to meet her gaze. It sounded like a tempting challenge but if he was being honest, she was already too much for him sometimes. She was exactly how she needed to be and she really complimented him. It was a novelty, really. He wondered if she truly understood that.
"Your silence means defeat," Montserrat said much too proudly for Rafael to want to taint.
His mouth opened on instinct to snap but he closed it in time. A light 'sure' slipped through a moment later. She straightened up with even more pride of her triumph. It was endearing.
"Alright," she tapped a hand over the file on the desk, "This is the new girl, new victim, that Rollins and I spoke to." Rafael picked it up to skim. "She sounds legit, she definitely had things to say about Shakir." He was getting that gist the further he read. "Liv reallys wants you to talk to Shakir and his new representative in this legal matter."
Rafael lowered the file to meet Montserrat's gaze. It was much too big of a smirk not to take the bite. "Who would that be?"
"Our dear frenemy Calhoun." She nearly laughed at his reaction.
"Of course. I'll handle it, I guess...of course…" He started in a new light, even a sneaky smile that Montserrat couldn't yet figure out. "It's always good to have a detective around."
"Oh, so now you want a detective at your side?" She asked, hands on her hips, as she reminded him about his earlier comment to her at the precinct. "I thought a detective was too tiring."
"Montserrat…" He should've known that comment would come back and bite him. "Montserrat, cariño—"
"Na-na-na," Montserrat wagged a finger at him, "Don't you 'cariño' me, ha! That's not always going to work." She planted her hands on his desk, leaning over with a smirk on her face. "Sledujte svoje ústa okolo mňa."
He knew he was in trouble, she was clearly scolding him, but Rafael couldn't get past the way her foreign tongue sounded. Plus, coupled with that smirk on her face? God. "What was that, my dear?" he asked in a pitiful mumble.
"Watch your mouth around me," she translated smoothly. She leaned off the desk, once again proud of herself with his reaction.
"Always," he said automatically, making her chuckle. He shook his head, reprimanding himself for being too weak, though he was sure that the next time Montserrat pulled something like that he would fall again no doubt.
"Hurry up and read the damn thing already," she said as she grabbed a seat across him. "I can be very impatient, you know." Just for show, she kicked her feet up on his desk, raising an eyebrow at him to say something about it. She was pushing buttons and they both knew it. How far would he let her go? The tingle of the suspense was the thrill she loved.
"Montserrat Irene Novak…" Rafael muttered under his breath. He grabbed the file again and decided to focus on it entirely before he lost it again. He did, however, catch her smirk from over the file.

Calhoun was representing Shakir, much to Rafael's annoyance. She brought Shakir to the office and both listened to the case that seemed to be getting bigger and bigger.
"Tiana Raynes. Sharkwear salesgirl is your latest victim," Montserrat told the pair. There was a flash of recognition in Shakir that didn't go unnoticed by her and Rafael.
"And she kept her panties?" Calhoun raised a clear suspicious eyebrow.
"Yeah, there was semen on them and her dress," Rafael answered with a tight smile. "Better than an autograph."
"When does she allege this took place?" Shakir demanded.
"You were in her store for a march madness event, Mr. Wilkins."
"I was everywhere for march madness. 16 cities in 16 days."
"This was in the Sharkwear flagship store. Tiana took a selfie with you and your cutout," Rafael said as Montserrat brought up said picture on a tablet. It was clear as day. "That's her, that's the dress."
"Okay, she met him," Calhoun shrugged.
"Well, she says he did more than that, so we are going to need a DNA sample today, Mr. Wilkins," Montserrat put the tablet down on the desk.
"No, no, look, I wanna be totally straight here," Shakir said before anyone said anything else. "I was in a bad place. I just lost my marriage. And my wife and I separated on new year's, and yes, I've been dating since."
The term was so loose and everybody knew it.
"And you "dated" Tiana Raynes?" Rafael asked.
"No, hooked up. One time, after hours, in a...a dressing room, and it was her idea."
"Yeah, but that's not her story," Montserrat cocked her head. "See, she told me you drugged her, and she woke up the next morning in the store, her dress stained."
"She says this now, five months later?" Calhoun said, face expressing obvious mistrust. "And she just happened to save the panties? This is well-timed blackmail."
"Look, she's lying about the rape," Shakir said.
"Yeah, like... Carla?" Montserrat sighed sarcastically, "Like Macie-Lynn? They all say that you bought them a drink, and the next thing they remember, they were naked, and they had been violated!" It was hard to believe it in the beginning too but every story was aligning with their predecessors.
That didn't stop Shakir from shouting the opposite. "They are lying too!"
"About what? Tiana's lying about being raped? But you did have sex with her, and the other two, they're lying about everything?"
"Okay, okay, I don't know what's going on here, but Carla, and the other one... Macie-Lynn? I may have had sex with them also."
"And if you did, it was consensual, isn't that right, Shakir?" Calhoun cut in sharply and quickly, as was her usual talent.
"Yes, absolutely. I mean, so I wasn't all warm and cuddly afterwards. I like sleeping alone. You know, spending the night, spooning, it's not part of the Shakir Wilkins experience."
"Mm, not surprising giving the stories," Montserrat flashed him a disdainful smile. "By the way, do you have a prescription for Ambien or Xanax?"
"Yes, of course I do. I can't sleep most nights because my wife is trying to take my son. And that's why I couldn't admit to the sex. She will crucify me with it in the custody battle."
He wasn't wrong there. Unfortunately he wasn't looking at the big picture. "You've got bigger problems than a custody battle, Mr. Wilkins," Rafael promised him. Calhoun knew enough to believe it.
~0~
"Okay, now Shakir is saying he did have sex with all three of them?" Olivia asked after Montserrat returned from Rafael's office. The detective dutifully nodded her head. "And let me guess, it was consensual." Once again, Montserrat nodded.
"It's possible," Sonny spoke up from his seat. "I once had two girls claim their dad molested them, just to get him to pay their student loans off."
"No rape kits. No outcry at the time. Barba's really gonna go forward with this?" Fin asked, leaving Montserrat to nod again. Her neck might hurt after this.
"Give it a rest, guys. I didn't want to believe it either. But we've got three consistent stories, and there's no evidence that the women compared notes…" Amanda said, everyone knowing she had been first in line to disbelieve these girls.
"They may be just after money," Nick pointed out. It was obvious that he, Fin and Sonny still held some of that disbelief. Even Montserrat found herself going back and forth sometimes. She never wanted to turn a victim away but there were a few points that made her feelings shift.
"They already got it from Bauer!" Olivia exclaimed.
"To keep quiet about being assaulted," Sonny corrected her, fully ducking his head when Olivoa threw him a glare.
"You want an outcry witness? Bauer's your guy."
"Good luck! You think Orion Bauer's gonna tank Shakir?" Fin scoffed.
"Mm-mm. I'm predicting health problems, mini stroke, something," Sonny said.
"We do have him on witness bribery charges. That gives us leverage," Montserrat shrugged. The daughter would definitely know that too which would hopefully lead to a compromise.
"In the meantime, let's vet the three complainants," Olivia decided. "Money issues, personal histories, and any previous false accusations." The others dutifully agreed and dispersed for their desks.
~ 0 ~
Despite a challenging conversation, Bauer reluctantly agreed to testify against Shakir. Everything was supposed to go smoothly despite the shaky case, but they caught a breakthrough when one of the victims, Carla, recorded a meeting between her and Shakir. It led to the full arrest of Shakir until the trial began.
A few days before the trial was set to begin, Orion Bay went on the air to announce the termination of Shakir's contract. It was all over the news and on repeat all day that even when Montserrat returned home, her ears were still privy to the broadcast.
"Turn that off," she groaned to Kara as soon as she came in.
"Well, safe to say I know the answer to 'how was work today?'," Kara said as she turned the television off. She looked over to her best friend taking off her coat. "Hey," she called with narrowed eyes, "Where's my boyfriend who promised me a delicious take out—" Sonny walked in just as she was about to finish that sentence and when Kara saw the bags in her eyes, she beamed. "My absolute best boyfriend!" She hopped off the couch to go greet him.
"Best boyfriend?" He repeated with a frown. "Does that mean there's more I don't know about?"
Montserrat rolled her eyes when Kara planted a kiss on him that shut him right up. "You're both annoying but since I want food I won't say anything." She walked by them and essentially grabbed the bags from Sonny's hands.
"That's not saying anything?" Kara made a face, giggling when Sonny very quietly said 'I wonder what she would do if she did have something to say?'.
Montserrat let it go for the sake of her hungry stomach. "Let's just eat. It's been a long day."
"I'll bet," Kara said as she and Sonny joined her in the kitchen. "It's all over the news, interrupting my shows too by the way. How big is it over there?" Both Montserrat and Sonny snorting at the same time was enough of an answer. "Okay, maybe switching topics is a good idea…"
"Yeah," went both detectives as they passed each other their respective orders.
"Hey!" Kara snapped her fingers when something came to mind, "How's that 'meeting the parents' bit coming along with Rafael?"
Montserrat froze. Her eyes flickered to Sonny who had quickly ducked his head to the box in front of him. "You're dead, Carisi."
Kara looked between them, wondering why her boyfriend was under threat. Sonny shrugged his shoulders. "I'm not looking for any arguments," he explained, something that had Kara nodding with approval.
"He's so smart, isn't he?" She curled her arm around his and rested her head against his shoulder. "I thought you looked kinda funny—"
"Funny?" This was definitely not getting better for Montserrat. "What the hell does that even mean?"
Kara pulled her arm from Sonny's to set her hands on her hips. "Montserrat, I've known you for years, like a decade really. You think I don't know when something's bothering you?"
Montserrat huffed. That was a fair point. "I'm not 'bothered'," she clarified. "Not anymore."
"Yeah, you're welcome," Sonny said, only to have a very sharp 'shut up!' thrown at him in return.
"Sure you're not bothered there?" Kara almost laughed.
"I'm not," Montserrat reassured her. She grabbed a seat and opened up her box of food. "I talked to Rafael, I told him I was giving him space. I'm not interested in pushing something on him that he doesn't want to do." It's the last thing she would ever do to him.
"He'll come along," Kara waved it off. "How do you plan on breaking the news to your family, though?"
"Gael already knows," Montserrat reminded her.
"Yeah, but he doesn't know who. And your dad has no idea about it. Got any plans?"
Montserrat shrugged. "I don't know. I figure just dinner or something."
"Why not something here?" Kara beamed at her own idea. "Oh! You can have something here and we can invite your family, even Casey to cushion the news for your dad."
"What?" Montserrat couldn't help but laugh. Casey was the last person who would 'cushion' anything about her dating life. If anything, she would make fun of them in front of her father.
"It actually could help ease the tension," Sonny put in his two cents when Kara started rambling about the evening in mind. "That's what Barba was worried about, right? He already knows Casey, he has some relationship with Gael—a limited one but something nonetheless—and Kara and I could even be around if that helps."
Montserrat smiled appreciatively at the two of them. For all the jabs she took at them and their relationship, the innate drive of them to help her constantly with her own relationship was something she would be thankful for. "You guys would do that for me?"
"Yeah!" they both exclaimed.
"When Rafael says 'yes', because we all know he's going to eventually agree, we can have everything set up!" Kara promised. Sonny chuckled when she started listing possible dinner ideas. He started eating from his own and maybe even picked from her box.
"It may not be for a while, Kara," Montserrat said. "I'm really just going to let him think about it for as long as he needs to."
"Well yeah but it'll eventually come up. So we can have your dad, Gael and the girls?" Kara laughed with Montserrat at the idea of her nieces meeting Rafael. "Oh, I can't wait to see what Ivana has to say."
"Juliana is the one that worries me," admitted Montserrat. Teenagers and whatnot.
"And I'm sure Casey will help no matter what. Plus, I'll be here," Kara gestured to herself then Sonny, "And of course my boyfriend and your partner who will say nothing but good things. I'll even bring along Damian!"
Sonny nearly choked on a bit of pasta, his endless coughing pulling the gazes of the two women. Kara patted his back while Montserrat stared with the deepest of confusion.
"You okay over there?" she asked.
"Y-yeah!" But he still coughed for a few more seconds. "Just...wrong pipe…"
"Gotta slow down there," Kara chuckled, pressing a kiss to his cheek.
"Yeah," he cleared his throat twice before he was able to stop. He wondered if it had even crossed Rafael's mind the inevitable meeting between him and Damian. He has to by now. It was simply too important to forget. He suddenly wished his girlfriend wasn't that big of an organizer because he had no desire to be around that gathering.
Unfortunately, Rafael would have no choice.

He’d gotten the news that rocked his world recklessly. The symptoms came back as soon as the doctor spoke the dreaded news—no more football for the year. His head spun, his pulse raced, and the urge to vomit grew intensely by the second. He had to place a hand against his throat to keep it all at bay.
He put on a brave face in front of his parents, as brave of a face he could possibly muster, which to him, was no falling tears. His mother and father, along with his twin sister, saw right through the Herculean act he tried to put on.
The worry on his face was clear as a summer day and his beautiful eyes were swamped with enough tears to fill a bucket.
He was broken.
The family let him have his time alone for a few moments, noticing his lack of interaction with them. What was he supposed to do? Smile and pretend he was okay with having his senior year swiped away? Never that.
The pasty white walls were boring to look at and he found the bracelet on his wrist more interesting. He toyed with the strings that tightened and loosened the fabric bracelet. It was black and gold, braided and strong—a random gift from his girlfriend, Tia.
A very faint knock sounded on the door, so quiet he hardly picked up on it. “Come in.”
Slowly, it peeled open. He turned his head to the side to avoid any unnecessarily bright lights. “Sorry, sorry. How are you doing? Such a loaded question to ask…” His angel had arrived in all her glory. He tried to smile at her, but failed miserably.
“I’m okay.” His response was short and lacked enthusiasm. He found it hard to look into her eyes when she sat on the edge of the hospital bed. The last thing he wanted was for her to see him like this—down and out.
“You can be honest with me. If you’re not okay, say that, Jordan. There’s no shame in it.” Always so wise, she was. He hated it sometimes, especially in times like this where he didn’t want to talk, but to sulk in his own pity, even if it wasn’t the proper thing to do at the time.
“I really don’t want to talk about it with anyone. Not you, not my parents, not my doctors. I just need to fully process everything.”
Tia frowned. And then, he felt bad.
With the clearing of her throat she asked, “do you want me to leave?”
Jordan sat up and reached for her hand. “No, no. Come here.” Strategically, she managed to shimmy up his lean body without him having to move too much. He wrapped an arm around her waist, palm against her bottom.
“I’m sorry. It’s been a lot to digest and I don’t know how to handle it and I snapped at you; I’m sorry. I’d never want you to leave.”
Tia hummed and began playing with his fingers, eyes glancing over the difference in their complexions, hers much deeper than his yet equally as beautiful. “Glad you say that. Your parents said I could stay for a few days—in the guest room of course, but I can keep you company. Surprised my mom agreed.”
Jordan smiled. “It’s ‘cause she loves me.” Factual. Tia thought her mother preferred him over her at one point.
“Whatever,” she teasingly rolled her eyes. “I’m glad you’re okay—no extreme damage.”
“Me too. Glad you came, thank you, babe.”
Tia placed the softest kiss against his cheek. “You’re welcome.”

HEARTBREAK ANNIVERSARY | J. BAKER
Tumblr media
a/n: this is finally part 2 to “love blind” although I had a alternative version to it saved in my drafts for weeks. I just wanted to dive right into the scene with inspiration from this week’s episode! I may or may not release the alternative version if I ever decide to go back and finish it that is. Here’s option 2!
WARNINGS: language!
Prompt: “how am I supposed to ‘love you’ when I never had feelings to begin with?
Here’s a synopsis to what led to this if you haven’t read part 1
Also s/o to my crap gif quality lol! + I’m not writing any else until Friday or the weekend but I have some ideas in the works or I might hold off until after the new episode on Monday. We’ll see!
Tumblr media
Del and Jordan were at each other’s throats since he came back from the store with JJ, Simone, Asher, and Vanessa. Big bear was gorgeous and the Californians were not used to the snow and wanted to enjoy all that it was. The main mission of coming up here for part of the winter break is to relax and enjoy each other’s companies but Del wasn’t that optimistic about this whole magical idea Layla had from the jump.
The Pakistani girl knew how to keep her distance and remain unbothered yet Jordan just knew how to get under her skin. No matter how hard she tried to brush off the comments made under his breath, she was going to snap sooner than later if he kept pushing her. They were all seated around the bonfire, something strong in their mugs...except for Olivia who apparently had Simone’s famous hot coco in her’s as they sat around playing never have I ever.
This was Vanessa’s idea and it was also her idea to invite Cam, Dane, AND Jeff? Jake? Well one of the dude’s Delphine hooked up with from Beverly High’s revival school over, running into them at the grocery store in the small town here. This girl was also for pushing these agendas and bright idea’s much like Layla, however Delphine liked Layla—sometimes whereas she wanted nothing to do with Vanessa.
“Never have I ever said I love you to get into someone’s pants without meaning it?” Vanessa stated, her eyes curious as she glanced at everyone in the circle her stare lingering on Delphine, Asher, and Olivia’s.
Asher, JJ, Cam, Dane, JED, Chris, and Jordan all took a sip. The boys all shared a look with each other, bashful smiles on their lips after they took a swallowed.
“You’re all whores!” Patience rasped, jokingly.
Dane pressed his elbows into his knees unapologetically, “a man’s gotta do what he’s gotta do to get some. I’m sure most of you females are being too embarrassed to own that.”
Vanessa tilted her head to the side at that. Delphine was too busy rolling her neck around trying to release any tension there since she was slowly but surely starting to feel the aftermath of sitting in a car balled up for a few hours on her body. She checked her phone to see that it was 12:31 am and let out a low yawn before she looked up to see some eyes on her.
She blinked, “can I help you?” She directed this at the eyes that drilled holes into her.
“I noticed you didn’t take a sip.” Jed was the first to answer before Dane or Vanessa could say anything.
Tumblr media
Delphine molded her lips together with a raised brow before she answered, “yeah so?”
“Definitely would have thought you’d be the main girl here to take a sip.” Jed boldly said what some were thinking.
Scoffing Delphine fanned her hand at the boy, “oh I know what this is, you’re in your feelings because I didn’t text you back? Sorry that I wasn’t interested in something long term with you, it was just a one night stand. Get over it, Jeff.”
Dane and Cam both shared a snicker at that while their buddy was clearly in his feelings over this.
“It’s Jed.” He corrected, “and it’s clear you have issues.” It was clear he was upset over the whole ordeal that Delphine couldn’t bother to remember.
“Whoa, whoa. What’s all this gaining up on Del for?” Olivia jumped to her best friends defense while Del we just used to the same bullshit.
However she didn’t have to take it but she knew what required her energy and what didn’t. This Jed guy didn’t.
“We’re just playing the game and people have the right to ask questions, right? To get to know each other better?” Vanessa added making Olivia and Delphine side eye her.
Spencer spoke, “well some things should be discussed in private not put on blast, ya know?”
“Thank you!” Olivia agreed.
Asher snorted at that, earning a look from Olivia but all he did was sip from his cup and look elsewhere.
Coop let out a low whistle as the circle got quiet for a moment. Dane yelled out another statement to continue the game but the damage was slowly rising with each passing moment.
“Never have I ever had a threesome!”
Cam and JJ were the only two to take a sip with Jordan nudging JJ, knowing of the story and almost witnessing it go down.
“Okay, can we ask some questions that aren’t strictly about sex?” Simone suggested.
Dane laughed, “why? is it bothering you? Making you uncomfortable that your sexual experiences continue to be nothing but boring.” He chuckled with Cam who smirked.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Simone hissed, sitting up straight in her chair.
Jordan placed his hand on Simone’s knee as he turned to Dane, “look I’m only going to tell you this one last time, we’re trying to be cordial with you guys but you’re overstepping. So I suggest you shut your mouths and respect what’s being said or I’m gonna ask all of you to leave cause frankly you’re not a guest here at all.”
“Ooo, I’m shaking in my boots. Don’t be upset with me because you’ve proven that you’re less than a man.” Dane was clearly tipsy but that never stopped him from running his mouth.
Delphine was annoyed at this point. She didn’t want to hear this constant beef with any of the boys here. It was exhausting and...stupid.
“You want to talk about what makes a man but you’re the only one here who couldn’t step up and claim your kid so you get off on calling the girl you slept with out of her name to make yourself feel better. Sounds like to me you’re the definition of a bitch.” Jordan announced, turning the heat up in here.
Chris and Coop had to give it Jordan, he always had the talk to match the hands if it got to that point. And if you messed with someone he cared about, there was no stopping what he wanted to say to you. Delphine also knew that very well.
“Why don’t you say that to my face then?” Dane pressed his elbows into his knees, heat in Jordan’s direction. It was evident Dane didn’t like to be put on the spot in front of people especially when the other was getting the best of him.
Jordan smiled and held his hands out, “I believe I just did. I’m looking right at you, bro.”
Dane rubbed at his face nodding his head, “aight keep talking and see what happens. you sure have a lot to say about a—
“I’m warning you, don’t finish the rest of that sentence.” Jordan cut him off.
Dane loved to instigate and opened his mouth to say more but it was actually Cam who gripped his shoulder to halt him further. Dane glanced at the hand on his shoulder in question at the confrontation was silenced for a few pauses.
“Should we keep playin’ or....?” Coop asked, digging the bottom half of her face into her puff jacket.
Layla looked uncomfortable at this, “I don’t know, I think we should probably wrap it up and get inside? It is getting kinda late.”
“Aw, c’mon I still wanted to hear the dirt on some of you guys!” JJ pouted a bit, “you know what I always say, the party doesn’t stop until the sun comes up!”
Delphine pressed her earmuffs closer over her ears as she replied, “as fun as this is, I’m over listening to Keenan and kel start shit with everyone. That’s basically why they’re here and I think mike wazowski did this deliberately.”
“Excuse me?” Vanessa was offended as she met Delphine’s eyes, “literally all I did was invite more people to the bonfire to get to know everyone better.”
“Yeah, you keep saying that.” Olivia muttered.
Delphine crossed one leg over the other, “sure but did you ask everyone, Layla maybe? if it was okay to invite them here when we’re not even friends with them or YOU for that matter?”
“That was uncalled for, Delphine.” Asher spoke up.
“Yes,” Layla concurred, “and I don’t like for anyone to feel unwelcomed, you know that, Del.” Layla expressed.
“And I asked if Vanessa can come.” JJ added.
Delphine rolled her eyes as she replied sarcastically, “well that about settles it then? We just invite anyone to this shit? Why don’t we ask the Blair witch or Goldilocks and the three bears to pull up too?!”
“I’m not just anyone, I’m Vanessa.”
Delphine widened her eyes at this, confused, “Is that supposed to mean something to me?”
Vanessa looked up at the sky annoyed before she continued, “if you all weren’t so territorial with each other maybe you would learn to let other people in and stop giving everyone else the third degree. It’s like you all don’t realize the inner issues you have with yourselves and each other so you pick fights with anyone else instead of solving your own bullshit. It’s just fraudulent.”
“Girl, gon. nobody asked for that psychoanalysis.” Patience bit at Vanessa who nodded her head.
“You’re proving my point, ya know.” She pointed.
“...I mean she’s right.” Asher slowly approved.
Olivia clasped her hands together, “of course she is! How about this, never have I ever spent too much time with someone else’s boyfriend that you don’t realize or either you don’t care that you’re butting into the relationship.”
Delphine was smug as she kept her gaze right on Vanessa who immediately dropped her head. It was about time Olivia called them out on this shit.
“Liv.” Asher addressed his girlfriend beside him, leaning towards her as he tried to keep his voice leveled and find out what to say next but he was stunned.
Olivia glared at Asher for a bit but burned holes into Vanessa who fell silent, “what? Now you don’t have anything to say? What a miracle that took! I’m going to bed.”
Jordan shortly followed after his sister, knowing that he didn’t want to be in Dane’s presence any longer but to also check on his twin. Far as he was concerned, this little event was now over.
“What is she talking about?” JJ decided to ask.
And Layla let the cat right out of the bag, “she saw you two in Mexico together.”
“What?” Asher breathed.
Del couldn’t believe Layla felt it was her place to further deliver the news for their friend.
“Yup,” Layla rubbed her hands against her pants legs, “she went to surprise you and caught the two of you instead on the beach.”
Asher rubbed at his face in disbelief while Vanessa sunk back in her chair.
“And yet you want to talk about fraudulent, tuh.” Patience commented before getting to her feet and pulling Coop up with her, “Good night y’all, I’ve had enough.”
“Good night.” Simone and Layla chorused while Coop gave a small awkward wave.
Spencer was now staring at both Vanessa and Asher, although he already knew the tea. He wanted to know what the two had to say for themselves, especially since Olivia was continuing to burry anything that bothered her.
“...You and Asher?” JJ breathed, highly disappointed, “the two of you could have least said something so Olivia and I wouldn’t have looked like idiots.”
Delphine immediately shook her head, “no JJ, you shouldn’t feel like shit. These two knew exactly what they were doing and now that their skeletons came to light, they’re the ones looking pretty dumb to me right now.”
“You know what Delphine, you’re the last person that should be sitting here acting all mighty and judging us right now.” Asher was mad and when he was mad, he was going to take it out on the nearest person next to him.
Delphine quirked up a brow and tilted her head to the side, beckoning Asher to say what was on his chest. It was about time he said something instead of hiding shit or whining about his problems instead of doing something about them.
“You’re no better than anyone here.” Asher argued, “you think you have it so bad that you do shit too in the dark not understanding that it messes with other people too. You don’t think your actions have consequences? You don’t get how it makes you look?”
Delphine let out a belly laugh before she sat up straight, “here’s the thing, Asher. You and I were never friends, you’re just there and I’m over here. So nothing you can say to me will ever hurt my feelings because...who are you to me? so you won’t ever get to know what I’m about, you see what you want to see and i don’t ever give a fuck about what you or anyone else thinks about me. I learned that the hard way, I live for me and me only. Not for anyone else’s opinions about who and what I should be. so yeah, I’m judging the shit out of you just like you’ve done to me since we met.”
Vanessa was all frowns as she looked at Asher to say something more. To fight back, to be the confident and bold Asher that she met over the summer. But it was clear Asher was a whole different and defeated person back here in California. She wanted to say something for him, like she commonly felt like she needed to do. Yet she didn’t know any of these people and she could tell that she was barking up the wrong tree here. However a part of her felt like she was never going to water down who she was for anyone either. In this moment she decided to not say a word and let it go because after all, Vanessa would learn and find her place soon.
It was Delphine who finalized this bonfire being over, as she made her exit with no words left for anyone. She flipped her poncho over her shoulder and walked off, leaving everyone else to decide for themselves what they wanted to do. Delphine always knew what she wanted so when she was done, she was done. Simone couldn’t help but to watch the girl in curiosity, the two never held a conversation together but the natural haired girl could tell that Delphine had a lot to say to her but Simone would not be the first to say something although she wanted to.
Now probably wouldn’t be a good time but by what Del said to Asher, Simone seemed to get a better understanding herself about Delphine Wateridge...
It was pushing 6 am when Delphine found herself in the kitchen, sitting at the island while staring out the large windows at the frosted mountains. It was surprising for her to not have a phone sitting right in front of her or to be up this early. However she was used to being woken up this early since her parents would be praying and it was something she used to participate in when she was younger. There was a shift in not only herself as a person but her parents too as the years went on, she noticed they stopped rising to pray too and the dynamic between her parents was off. Just like a lot of things in her lifetime...
“Sorry cruella, didn’t think you’d be awake.” Jordan croaked as he entered the kitchen, flicking on some lights that made Del squeeze her eyes shut a bit.
Del pursed her lips and shrugged her shoulders.
Jordan pulled out a pitcher of orange juice shocked, “what? No shit talking from the ice queen herself, This morning? C’mon!”
“Is this what it’s going to be like until we finally separate and go to college or wherever we end up?” Del asked, playing with the rings on her fingers.
Jordan leaned against the island taking a sip as he thought about it, “dunno...we don’t have crystal balls thrown in any of suitcases do we?”
“I wish we did...might make things easier by being around you.” Del ran her fingers through her tangled bed-hair.
Jordan rubbed at his eyes, “...didn’t take you as someone who wants to get a glimpse of the future while we’re here in the present.”
“Well Jordan, I don’t know about you but... this life thing is pretty exhausting right now. And not just last night made me realize that.” Del let out a humorless laugh as she was honest with him, almost as if they were two old friends again.
Jordan felt a part of him wanted to be concerned by that statement but he couldn’t fully allow himself to. He kept his eyes on Del while she looked anywhere but at him. She was being vulnerable with him right now and that was something he hadn’t seen from her in awhile. Delphine built a wall around herself, that much was evident...and although they were no longer friends, Jordan knew this was not who she used to be.
Simone told him what Asher said to Delphine in front of everyone and honestly he wanted to choke-slam Asher but knew he would not. That would show that he still cared. And that he did not. Or say he says...
“The whole shift in our friendship, what happened with me and that asshole, how I chose to live my life now...I mean it is what is but this place hasn’t made me feel at ease yet. I don’t think anything will, it’s like something is missing but you keep trying to fill it up with pointless shit ya know?” Delphine vented.
Jordan slowly nodded his head and molded his lips together. He got that but he was so angry and hurt at what they became he decided to say the wrong thing, “okay...I don’t know what you want me to say or do about that but this has nothing to do with me. It’s like what you said to the Jed guy you hooked up with, you have to move on.”
“Woooow,” Delphine should have believed her ears but she tried to take a different approach at dealing with Jordan by being honest and this is what he came up with, “I’m not the only one that’s here to blame, Jordan.”
Jordan furrowed his brows, “you’re just looking to point the finger and I’m not going to be your punching bag. That’s one of the reasons I removed myself out of your life, to do the both of us a favor.”
“You know what Jordan, fine.” Delphine pinched the now building tension at her temples.
“Fine?” Jordan asked more than concluded.
“I’m sick of this, so fuck you.” Delphine slammed her hands down on the counter as she scrapped the stool back that she was sitting on.
Jordan pointed at his chest, “fuck me?! How dare you, Delly. We haven’t seen eye to eye in months and now you decide everything is peachy by sitting here feeling sorry for yourself. As if I want to hear this? As if I don’t have a girlfriend up stairs that I care about.”
Delphine stared at Jordan incredulously, “where the hell is the correlation in that?!” She screamed, sure now that someone in the house was awake. “I don’t know why I thought I could attempt to clear up the air with you, when you have your head buried so far up your own ass, that you can just continue your life on like it’s okay to not give a single shit! about the one person that’s always been by your side, no matter what, even when you continued to hurt me.”
“And what?! You dont think you ever shitted on me?” Jordan yelled back.
Delphine shook her head from side to the side, “that’s the difference between you and I, Jordan! I always acknowledged the fact whenever I did because I know how to apologize! I always knew how to tend to your needs over mine because if it isn’t Jordan’s way then the end of the world will demolish by your hands! I mean fuck, Look at what it’s done to us because of your stubbornness.”
“So what? now you’re telling me I’m a bad person because I have feelings too?” Jordan didn’t understand what Delphine was getting at.
Delphine rolled her eyes, “I never said you were a bad person, I’m saying you had times when you weren’t the best friend to have around. I never made you feel like your feelings weren’t valid. Ever. You made me feel like mine weren’t because I was in love with you, you had to have known that and you loved me too but it wasn’t enough.”
Jordan went silent at that not sure how to feel about that exactly. He knew Delphine was in love with him, I mean how could he not? Yet he played on those feelings, not intentionally? to have sex with her and knew she would always be around if he needed her to. She was his best friend and took advantage of that. Just like all these other dudes and girls did. He never saw it that way but looking back on it, now he understood. But they didn’t call Jordan stubborn for nothing.
While he off reminiscing he zooned back and said something that Delphine would never forget, “how am I supposed to love you when I never had feelings to begin with?”
And for the first time, Jordan watched someone, not anyone, but Delphine’s heart break. Her eyes burned with tears as she left out bated breaths before chewing on her lips.
“If that was even the slightest bit true, then what was all of that in Vegas then? I still have those messages, you asshole.” Delphine held her ground, watching as Jordan stepped back, next expecting her to throw that in his face but she sure did.
She could always keep up in their disagreements so if he wanted to hurt her then she could do it too.
“...everything cool in here?” A voice cut in as they watched the two in the room appear as if they were in a stand off.
Which they were.
Delphine was the first to turn to Darnell and gave him a small smile as a tear slid down her cheek. “Everything’s perfect.”
Darnell didn’t believe that. Him and Spencer were in fact the first ones to jump at the noise, well rather Spencer nudged him to come along for back up since Darnell wanted to mind his business but the doorbell caught their attention to on the way up to the kitchen. Spencer just had to handle the door while leaving Darnell to deal with the constant arguing between Delphine and Jordan.
Spencer finally entered the room since Darnell was not sure what else to say in this moment, “uh, someone’s here for you, Del.” He informed, glancing back and forth between her along with Jordan.
Quickly Del wiped away any tears as she angled her body away from Jordan while she grinned at the boy who finally appeared from around the corner.
Tumblr media
“Cody,” She breathed as she made her way over to the tall buzzed hair boy who was has his signature smirk plastered on his face.
She embraced him, pressing her nose into his shoulder while he squeezed her back. “Mi amor, told you I’d be here.”
He didn’t even glance Jordan’s way as Delphine pulled back to peck his lips and pull him away from this scene. Leaving what needed to be left behind her.
Jordan smacked the glass onto the ground, making Darnell and Spencer jump back not wanting any of the shards to come their way.
“I guess everything isn’t perfect, then huh?” Darnell widened his eyes as he sighed looking at the glass and juice now decorating the kitchen tile.
Spencer was the first to cautiously make his way over to Jordan who now held his bleeding hand. “Bro, tell me what’s going on?”
“Who the hell was that and why is he here?” Jordan snapped.
“A friend of Del’s, she invited him I guess.” Spencer gripped his shoulder, hoping to calm him down.
Jordan snorted, “yeah a friend. Yeah okay, is that what she’s calling them now? That’s hilarious.”
Spencer glanced over at Darnell who just shrugged his shoulders and patted his stomach as it growled. He turned back to Jordan and encouraged, “let’s get you cleaned up before everyone gets down here for breakfast, huh? I got you, c’mon.”
And Jordan let Spencer guide him away from his own heartbreak.
Darnell pushed his lips as he stepped over the glass looking at the fridge and looked back at the two boys that left him alone, “so y’all just gonna leave me here to clean up his mess?”
When he didn’t get a response he sighed as he snatched a rag up, “guess so.”
Tumblr media

A/N: This is a late submission to @choicesmonthlychallenge for the March Day 20 prompt: Siblings. I meant to post this a couple of days ago but time got away from me. Timeline wise, it’s set during the later section of Piece by Piece. of Enjoy!
Tumblr media
The birthday cake had been a work of art, but with a baker as good as Sienna Valentine (née Trinh) they expected nothing else. It wasn’t just her skill (although it was certainly laudable) rather it was her ability to make the design and flavors personal that made the creation memorable.
And, making a birthday cake for her two favorite people in the world — her husband and her fellow dolphin — was as personal as it got. She had been pleased with not only the final result but also the appreciation from the siblings as they blew out the candles, cut the cake and forked up the first bite.
The Valentine Twins were celebrating their thirty-third birthday. Unlike previous years, they had opted to celebrate at home, just the immediate family, rather than go on one of their trips. Sienna knew that the reason was her advancing pregnancy, but both Max and Cassie had insisted it was what they wanted as well.
As a result, Cassie and her husband, Ethan Ramsey, had traveled down from Boston to spend two days at her parents’ home in Arlington. And even though she and Max lived across the river in Georgetown they decided to spend the night there as well, making it a family staycation slash sleepover.
Once the festivities were over, Sienna was glad to put up her swollen feet and rest her aching back on the comfortable couch in the family room. Eyes closed, she listened to the soothing voice of her husband and bestie reminisce about their childhood, smiling whenever she learned something new.
Her hands cradled her belly, keeping time with the somersaults little bean was performing until she saw the Monopoly board. And then she started praying.
Olivia Valentine was over the moon at having her entire family under one roof for once. It had been a long time since she’d celebrated her children’s birthday at home with a simple family dinner. It was common enough when they were younger, but in the last ten years or so they had eschewed birthday parties in favor of trips and experiences.
Dinner had been cleared and cake served for dessert in the family room. Olivia was about to suggest they have coffee and tea on the patio outside when she heard a single word that caused her heart to stop. Monopoly.
She reached for her husband’s hand, clasping it tightly in hers as she and Robert watched on with dread.
Cassie went to the closet in the corner where they kept gameboards and other entertainment paraphernalia. Olivia had hidden the property game way in the back, out of sight, but she should have known her daughter was too stubborn to give up after a quick search.
With a whoop of triumph, Cassie pulled out the game that had seen its fair share of overturned boards, lost game pieces, ripped up title deed cards and torn paper money taped back together. When they were younger, she and Robert were forced to buy a new set every other year.
She blamed the competitive Valentine genes. As easy going as her husband was in real life, he was a shark in the boardroom. And their children had taken after him so that game nights got very intense, very quickly.
Olivia sent a silent prayer of thanks that Sienna was already married to Max otherwise she might have second thoughts after tonight.
Ethan Ramsey could admit to feeling content as he took a sip of excellent scotch, the smokey flavor going down smooth with a pleasant aftertaste. He was kicked back in one of the armchairs by the fireplace, close enough to where Cassie was seated on the couch with her brother.
Sprawled side by side, their heads next to each other on the cushions, they talked about some of their more memorable birthday celebrations. They laughed, debated and disagreed on their recollections at times but were very much in sync, their unique bond shining through.
Ethan had never imagined that he would have a family except for his father and the handful of aunts and uncles and cousins sprinkled around New England that his dad stayed in touch with more than him. And now he had Cassie, and her family had adopted him as their own.
Lost in thought, he didn’t immediately notice the shift in the air but one glance at Sienna’s worried face as well as Olivia’s and he knew he had missed something major. He was about to ask what was wrong when Cassie returned with a box of Monopoly clutched in her hand.
He silently groaned and wondered if he was about to be pulled into an impromptu game night. While he didn’t mind the occasional poker game, childish board games were not for him. That was how he felt and his wife would just have to respect his decision and play without him.
A short while later, he surveyed the board and wondered if he’d ever be able to resist when Cassie turned on the charm, her green eyes sparkling as she convinced him of the merits of the game. He had reluctantly agreed when she said three players would be lopsided and four would make more sense.
In his eagerness to please her, he missed the sympathetic look that Sienna sent his way but not her dismayed sigh as she took her seat at the table. He chalked it down to her pregnancy, but he really should have known better given how well Sienna knew both Cassie and Max.
Ethan had always known Cassie was competitive when it came to sports and games but observing the siblings play Monopoly threw him for a loop. Sienna on the other hand was completely unfazed when every roll of the dice resulted in jeers or how landing on every property square felt like a skirmish.
And then the insults started flying.
“Don’t be asshole,” huffed Cassie when she landed on one of Max’s properties and he held out his hand with a smirk.
“Piggy bank feeling a little empty?” he taunted as she carefully counted her dwindling supply of cash.
“See if I visit when you go to jail for being a Class A jerk,” she grumbled, slapping the paper money in his hands.
And so it continued for the next few turns.
“Have you forgotten what I do for a living, scout?” sneered Max when Cassie complained loudly about yet another hotel he put up.
Two turns later, Max cursed out loud when he landed on New York Avenue where Cassie had recently built houses, after completing her purchase of the full block as well as the one adjacent to it, from Kentucky to Illinois avenues.
She didn’t even bother with a taunt, just put her hand out and said, “Give it up, Maximus.”
“Don’t be a bitch,” said her brother, handing over the rent money.
Another half an hour later, Ethan wondered if the twins would even notice if he suddenly walked away from the game. It was doubtful, he concluded, meeting Sienna’s commiserating look.
Soon it was her turn and Sienna rolled the dice, landing on Marvin Gardens, the exact property that Max had his sights on since he owned the first two in that block.
“Oh fuck,” she cried out before slapping a hand over her mouth, eyes wide in shock at the words that had escaped her lips.
She glanced at Max, saw the disappointment on his face at losing prime real estate, and handed over her money to Robert who had agreed to play banker and peacemaker. With a heavy sigh, she took the title deed and turned towards Max, card in hand.
“How much?” she asked.
“Fifteen percent over face value and I’ll give you a ten percent rebate the first time you come back,” he offered with a smirk in his sister’s direction.
“Hey!” protested Cassie. “That’s not fair. You can’t do that.”
“House rules say I can,” Max gloated before turning back to Sienna. “Well?”
“Ten percent rebate the first two visits on any of the properties on this block,” countered Sienna.
“Don’t do it, Sienna,” urged Cassie. “We don’t negotiate with sharks!”
Sienna just rolled her eyes. “You and I both know that he’s going to bankrupt me the first chance he gets and then I’ll have no choice but to mortgage or sell everything to him at a considerable loss.”
She narrowed her eyes as Max scratched his jaw while considering her offer but she knew that expression on his face and it was triumph. She quietly handed over the title deed after he nodded in agreement and they shook on it.
Cassie muttered “Traitor” under her breath while Max laughed maniacally at sealing the deal.
“I knew there was a reason I fell in love with you,” he crowed, leaning over to plant a smack on her lips; winking when Sienna shook her head in amused exasperation.
As luck would have it, Max was next and used his time and considerable fake resources to build hotels on Atlantic and Ventnor Avenues as well as Marvin Gardens.
As far as Ethan was concerned, it was a case of game imitating real life since Max had managed to build a hotel empire on at least one block on each side of the game board on top of owning all the utilities.
Cassie wasn’t too far behind, investing in all but one railroad, owning a chunk of west and east side properties as well as Boardwalk. She needed only Park Place to complete the set of prime real estate. Given her cash flow situation, Ethan wondered how she expected to build houses let alone luxury hotels, but she had certainly proved resourceful so far.
A few more rounds later, the game started to change direction.
“It’s going to take more than that to beat me, sis,” Max fumed after he had a few bad turns including two tax payments and a trip to jail, resulting in a victory dance from his sister.
But Cassie wasn’t concerned as she gyrated around the room until Ethan pulled her back down and handed her the dice, determined to finish the game before too much longer. At this stage, he and Sienna were superfluous but neither of them could walk away.
He would have stuck to his neutrality, but then he landed on Cassie’s coveted Park Place and understood exactly how Sienna had felt earlier. He didn’t even bother negotiating; just handed over the title deed to his beloved and saved himself the headache.
“Talk about playing favorites,” Max scoffed, not hiding his displeasure. “I thought you were smart, Ethan. She’s land rich, cash poor. You could have held her hostage or offered to buy Boardwalk and built your own hotels.”
“So not worth it,” was all Ethan said with a quick glance at Cassie.
The expression on her face confirmed his suspicions that she would have gone nuclear on him had he not given her what she wanted.
When Sienna declared bankruptcy a short while later, Ethan was positive it was a ploy to exit the game graciously. She was nowhere near the player her husband was, but neither was she that bad. The secret smile she exchanged with Robert as she handed over everything was all the proof he needed.
Taking Sienna’s cue, he started playing badly until he too was forced to concede, not that the remaining two players noticed as they battled over the mortgaged properties. Cassie didn’t even ask, she just grabbed Ethan’s discarded title deeds and added them to her pile before he’d cleared the table.
“That’s cheating,” Max objected, standing up to loom over the board as he looked over at his father. “Dad, she can’t just take Ethan’s properties.”
“Yes, I can,” countered Cassie, standing up to face off against her brother. “Virginia is an equitable property state. Whatever belonged to Ethan is now mine.”
“This isn’t divorce court, Cassie,” challenged Max, folding his arms across his chest, voice rising in frustration. “The man is bankrupt and gave up his properties. They go back to the communal pot to be purchased by whoever has the cash to pay off his mortgage. And guess what? You don’t have the cash.”
“I reject your premise!” said Cassie, also folding her arms across her chest as they squared off across the table.
“Fine,” hissed Max, reaching over into the bank. “I’m taking all of Sienna’s discarded properties then too.”
Before things could go from bad to worse, Olivia walked back into the room. She quickly took stock of the situation and shared a dismayed look with her husband who just shrugged his shoulders and walked away.
“That’s enough, you two,” she said coming to stand between them. “I’m declaring this round a draw. Now kiss and make up before I put you both in time out.”
Her aggrieved tone and the threat of a time out had Cassie and Max bending over in laughter. Still, they held out their hands, signaling a truce with a handshake.
“Good game, scout,” said Max, tugging Cassie into his arms for a hug.
“Likewise, Maximus,” said Cassie, chuckling when they turned, arm in arm, to survey the board and their spoils.
Ethan wasn’t sure what to make of it when the siblings packed up the game as if nothing had happened the last couple of hours. He looked down when Sienna nudged his arm, absently taking the cookie she handed him.
As he stood companionably with Sienna, nibbling on cookies and watching their respective spouses joke and laugh amiably while they complimented each other’s game play, Ethan wondered if there would ever come a time when Cassie Valentine wouldn’t perplex him.

So today I finally typed up a masterlist for my OCs. Here it is:
Sherlock:
⁃ Amy Olivia “Liv” Watson: adopted daughter of John Watson and Sherlock Holmes. 16 in seasons 1-2, 18 in seasons 3-4. orphaned member of Sherlock’s Homeless Network. John decided to adopt her shortly after the Fall, and it was revealed by Sherlock that he’d actually planned to do the same after he returned. so John and Sherlock are essentially her co-parents.
⁃ Leila Madeline Morris (Holmes): former resident of the US, she moved to London 10 years before the events of A Study In Pink after spending a semester abroad in London for school. dated Jim Moriarty (under the alias of Jim Moran) during her first three years in London but broke things off after Jim became oddly distance (she suspected it was because he was actually gay, but really it’s because he was continuing to build his criminal network. Jim went along with her theory though). two years later she opened a bookstore on Baker Street which is when she met Sherlock. she offered the shop as a sort of home base for the Homeless Network, which Sherlock gladly accepted. she is essentially Sherlock’s second-in-command when it comes to the Network. over time she begins to develop feelings for Sherlock and after the Fall she makes those feelings more clear. to her surprise he feels the same as her and they marry in secret shortly before the events of His Last Vow. AU: instead of Moriarty playing along with Leila’s theory, he tells her the truth and she essentially becomes his right hand man.
Star Wars:
⁃ Vanka Dameron: Poe’s younger sister. the two were separated at a young age when she was taken by the First Order. after being taken she was trained as a pilot in the First Order and eventually became their best pilot. by chance she and Poe are reunited and she realizes that someday she might have to kill her own brother. the thought proves too much for her and she joins the Resistance, where she serves as their second best pilot (Poe being the first).
⁃ Cressida “Cress” Straysa: fellow bounty hunter and ally to the Mandalorian. she and Din have known each other for many years. one day a bounty is mysteriously put on her head and Din is sent to bring her in. Din can’t betray his friend so the two set out to kill whoever unjustly put the bounty on her head.
Harry Potter:
⁃ Elizabeth “Eliza” Carlisle: Marauders era. Ravenclaw who befriends the Marauders and Lily Potter. member of the Order of the Phoenix. she was the first love of Remus Lupin, but is tragically killed one day while fighting with The Order.
Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit:
⁃ Elonni Turpin: half elf/half human. father was a man and her mother was an elf. since she’s a halfbreed she isn’t truly accepted by many of the elves (with Elrond, Legolas, and Tauriel being the exceptions). more human in appearance, but she does age the same as the elves. member of Thorin Oakenshield’s band during the events of The Hobbit (when around late teens/early twenties in appearance) and later assists The Fellowship (when around late twenties/early thirties in appearance). close friend of Bilbo Baggins and a skilled archer.
Marvel:
⁃ Maureen Meredith Quill (Strange): Peter Quill’s twin sister, though Peter is the elder between the two. her mother called her Star-Lady, but she prefers the name Gemini since it’s the sign of twins. shortly before the events of Thor Ragnarok, Mori feels something calling her back to Earth. she heads back to Earth and finds herself at the New York Sanctum where she meets Stephen Strange. Maureen begins to train as a sorcerer, even starting a little relationship with Stephen. she eventually reunites with part of her old team during the events of Infinity War. Maureen survives the Snap and takes over the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme in Stephen’s absence. the two of course reunite during Endgame and eventually marry.
⁃ Olivia Alben aka Vega: original X-Men trilogy era. powers include energy manipulation and slight telepathy. like a daughter to Logan.
⁃ Angela May Parker aka Spider-Girl: Spider-Man alternate dimension where Peter looses both of his legs after a freak accident during a battle. Angela convinces her father to transfuse some of his venom-infused blood into her so she can obtain his spider-like powers and take over the mantle of Spider-Man for him. would eventually tie into spiderverse.

“I can not believe you just took that fucking bet ! What the hell is wrong with you too!” Olivia said screaming at the top of her lungs with the car windows down and I barely could pay attention because Jordan’s hand was on my thigh. “ Do you too know how south this could go!? Of course you don’t because if you did you wouldn’t have taken the bet!”Olivia said fuming her light face turned dark red real quick and like I said before I barely could pay attention to what she was saying because now Jordan was whispering in my ear. “I never got a chance to tell you mine.”Jordan said so low Barry white had nothing on him. “My turn ons are boobs, ass,I have a daddy kink, you and cheerleaders.” Jordan said low enough the devil could’ve heard him.He never moved his hand from my thigh. “Are you two even listening too me!?”Olivia said with anger in her voice. “I was he wasn’t.” I say being petty. “Sis I was listening to you totally.”Jordan said hand still on my thigh. “Okay what did I say?”

The Tie That Binds Us - Chapter Seven (Times Past And Future Possibilities)
Tumblr media
Summary: Harper recalls some more bits from the past and starts to consider what may be in her future.
Word Count: 1,146
Warnings: Angst and some fluff
Tumblr media
When Harper arrived at Olivia's it was with a smile on her face. She knocked and Olivia opened the door after a few seconds. "It’s nice to see you in good spirits," Olivia greeted, giving a small, halfhearted smile of her own.
"I passed my driver's test," Harper announced.
"Really? That’s amazing, Harper," Olivia replied, her smile brightening to a more truly happy one. "Come in. This calls for a celebratory dinner. It’s nothing fancy. I only made mac and cheese, and Andy isn’t—"
"You don’t have to explain," Harper interrupted. She knew full well about their troubles and didn’t wish to ruin Olivia's mood. With a nod in thanks for the interruption, the two of them went to the kitchen.
Olivia went back to working on the mac and cheese with a promise that it was nearly done, and Harper rifled through her bag. Coming across the balled up paper from the driving test, she pulled it out and flattened it out. It turns out it wasn’t hers, but it was nonetheless familiar.
The snickering coming from a couple of tables away hadn’t fazed her at the time. Harper and Hannah were sitting together laughing over some dumb joke that she couldn’t quite recall now. Then the list made it over to them. Harper was the first to look at it. To her it was childish, stupid. She found her name under "Biggest Tease" and rolled her eyes. To her it was just words on paper. She didn’t realize a few simple words could ruin a life.
Hannah had looked over her shoulder to see what she was reading. Harper couldn’t imagine how she didn’t see the hurt on Hannah's face at finding her own name listed there. But she hadn’t. She laughed the whole thing off, dismissing it, and unknowingly dismissing Hannah as well. But Hannah couldn’t laugh it off like she could, and it only got worse from there.
"Harper." The sound of her name from Olivia's lips made her come back out of her memories. She looked at Olivia, focusing in on her blue eyes and fully bringing her back to the here and now. Harper balled the paper back up and threw it in the garbage.
"Sorry, just cleaning out my backpack. I hadn’t realized how much of a mess it was in there," Harper played off. She wasn’t about to ruin their evening bringing up old wounds. This wasn’t the time.
Olivia smiled. Whether or not she believed Harper was up for debate, but she let it go at her word for now. She slid a bowl of mac and cheese over to Harper and then dished one for herself. They made a little light conversation as they ate, even allowing themselves to laugh a time or two before Harper realized she should be getting home. "Thanks for dinner, Olivia. And the company. I should head home, but I’ll see you soon, okay?"
"You know you’re welcome anytime," Olivia said, taking Harper's dish and putting it in the sink. Harper gave Olivia a quick hug goodbye and Olivia placed a kiss on her cheek before letting go. Then it was out into the cool October night for her walk home.
"Where have you been," rang the accusation as soon as Harper stepped foot inside her home.
"Olivia's," she answered her mother truthfully. "I passed my driver's test and I thought I’d maybe want to stop and tell someone who cares."
"What the hell do you need to drive for? You walk everywhere."
"My point exactly," Harper muttered under her breath. The least she could have said was 'congrats' before jumping down her throat. "Maybe I’d like to get out of this town someday, mom."
To that she was only scoffed at, so Harper left the argument to die there in order to preserve what was left of her formerly pleasant evening. But her mother wasn’t done with her yet it seemed. "You’re always over there. All I hear is Olivia this, Olivia that. Sometimes you don’t even come home anymore. What is it about that woman?"
Harper wouldn’t discuss this any further, she only went to her room and closed the door, locking it behind her. She didn’t even know how to answer that question if she had stayed to fight about it. She didn’t know what Olivia was to her. All she really knew is that she liked her, liked spending time with her and felt safe and even happy when she was with her. She fell asleep to the thought of that kiss on her cheek that Olivia had given her before she left.
The next two days were tense around her house, but thankfully quiet. Colleen had given her a lot to think about and though she hated her mother for putting the idea into her head, she had to reason that the exact nature of her relationship with Olivia was unclear. And, whatever it was, Harper had to ask herself, was that all she wanted it to be? Harper had somewhat retreated back into her own little world over this whole thing and her relationship with Clay and with Tony had started to suffer because of it.
While she wanted to put in more effort with Clay, it seemed all they could manage was a hello or a how are you in the hallway, which was more than they’d ever done before, but somehow didn’t feel like enough at the same time. And it was only when Tony pulled up to the curb after school that Harper realized that she hadn’t even seen him or so much as sent him a text in the last two days.
"Hey, can I give you a ride," Tony asked.
Harper gave a weak smile. Once again, Tony was there to save her from her self isolating tendencies. "Yeah, I could do with a ride," Harper agreed and Tony leaned over to open the door for her.
"Do you remember the night we met, well the one where we became friends," Tony asked out of the blue.
"I— yeah, actually. I do."
It was the winter formal the year before. Dances were very much not Harper's thing, but Hannah had convinced her to go along. She’d actually begged her to come, so Harper could hardly say no. She didn’t have the worst time, but she did spend most of the night at the edge of the room, watching.
She recalled seeing Hannah and Clay dance together that night, and she couldn’t help but smile. Harper had the feeling that he’d be good for her after all the bad that year had brought. And maybe she was right, but now she’d never really know for sure.
However, seeing the two of them so happy had reminded her of how alone she really was at that dance. She had borrowed an old dress of Hannah's since her mother wouldn’t spring for one. The only reason she’d come at all was to keep her friend company, and while she was sure she could have had her share of offers from some of the boys at Liberty, she didn’t want to dance with any of them. So she went outside for a breath of air.
The chill that night was the polar opposite of the stifling environment inside, where everyone was moving, and dancing, the temperature boosted by all the closeness and hormones raging. And there was Tony, leaning against the building. Also alone.
"Not really a place for the likes of us, is it," he asked. "I only came as a favor to Clay, and the extra money to DJ didn’t hurt either."
"Yeah, it’s not really my scene, even if there was anyone I wanted to dance with," Harper admitted. Tony gave her a knowing look. And that was it. That understanding that both of them had something in common, something that set them apart from most of their peers. And in a quiet way, they’d been there for each other ever since.
"Was there a point to bringing up that memory," Harper asked after reminiscing.
"Only to remind you that I’m still here if you need to talk. You’ve been radio silent for a couple days."
"Right. I’ve just had a lot to think about." Tony's look of concern caused Harper to amend her statement. "I'm good, I promise. Or I will be. I wouldn’t even know where to start right now, but when I’m ready to talk, you know I’ll come to you." Tony nodded, taking her at her word. She hardly ever broke a promise to him. And he drove her the rest of the way home in silence.

The Tie That Binds Us - Chapter Six (Big Changes, Small Wins)
Tumblr media
Summary: Harper makes some changes to her life and can already see some improvements.
Word Count: 1,117
Warnings: None
Tumblr media
Her morning walking route to school brought her past Tony's and she waited for him outside. If it wasn’t for her, he probably wouldn’t ever come to school. She kept his attendance at least somewhat regular. As he came walking out the front door, Harper smiled. He pulled a small stack of papers from his backpack, one he only ever carried when he had something for her. Handing them over, Harper attempted to put them in her own backpack as they started walking. Tony only ever walked for her. It was sweet of him, really, but maybe she was taking advantage.
Harper paused and slid the papers in her backpack before asking, "Actually, do you think you could drive us today?" This caused Tony to stop in his tracks. Harper never wanted to take his car, no matter how many times he offered.
"You sure," he asked. Harper nodded. Why should it be him that always compromised for her?
"I could use the change," she said in confirmation of her choice.
"Alright, hop in," Tony replied, still a little baffled at her sudden change of heart. The drive to Liberty High was short, and the two made a bit of awkward small talk, Harper clearly not used to taking a car. It was strange for her, but not bad. Tony was a good driver.
After arriving at Liberty High, they parted with a hug. "Thanks for everything, Tony," Harper says in his ear.
"Yeah, no problem," he replied. This wasn’t the Harper he’d known just several days ago. Something about her had changed, but maybe it wasn’t a bad change, he thought to himself as he watched her walk away.
Harper passed the early part of her day catching up on her missed classwork and homework. She made quick work of most of it, while maintaining a sense of what was going on in her classes today. For anyone else the task may have been too difficult, but Harper excelled at multitasking.
When lunch finally came, Harper felt her stomach rumble. She’d forgotten she hadn’t eaten breakfast this morning and the reminder was hitting her full force now. She went to grab some food before spotting Clay sitting alone at the far table. "Sorry for flaking on you yesterday," she said in greeting, causing him to look up at her. "I was sort of having an off day."
Harper took a seat across from him. "No, yeah, I get it," Clay told her. "I have those too, especially since…"
"Right," Harper said, neither of them needing to say her name. They both knew exactly what he meant.
Harper ate a few bites as their conversation dissolved into an uncomfortable silence. She noticed that Clay had his bag next to him, and was keeping it oddly close as if he thought it would be stolen or something. The realization hit her in an instant. He must have the tapes. She had no idea how far he was, and thought it best not to bring them up at all. There’s no telling who may be listening and overhear something they shouldn’t.
It was clear Harper wasn’t making much traction on starting a friendship with Clay, but she didn’t really expect to be best friends overnight. That wasn’t really what either of them needed from each other. "Look," Harper began, finally breaking their silence, "I know we haven’t spoken much in all the years we’ve gone to the same school, and I don’t expect that to change now just because of one lunch, but if you ever need to talk about Hannah, I’ll always listen."
Clay opened his mouth to reply, but found himself momentarily floundering. "I, uh, yeah, thanks. Same—same to you. You know, if you ever need to talk."
"Thanks, Clay. And I mean it. If you ever need anything, you can come to me." He nodded and the two of them finished their lunch in quietness, only the indistinct conversations of people around them keeping it from being completely silent again. Harper left the cafeteria thinking it may not have been much, but an effort had been made. She’d just have to wait and see where it went from there.
Caught up on most of her missed work from the day before, Harper was feeling good about her upcoming driving test. It was scheduled for an hour after school in the empty school parking lot. All she had to do was wait it out and she could cross the last thing off her to do list for the day.
The hour's wait after school felt like it dragged on for much longer than sixty minutes. Harper sat out on a bench looking out at the parking lot as car after car left and emptied the place. Finally, with a glance at her phone, Harper realized it was time. Her driving instructor pulled up a minute or two late and got out of the car. "Ready, Cassidy," he asked, referring to her by her last name. She hated that, but she supposed it came with being a coach. What sport exactly he coached at Liberty wasn’t coming to her, but she didn’t much care either. She just wanted to get this done and over with.
Harper got in the car, adjusting to the idea, as she’d done with being in Tony's car just that morning. It still felt somewhat foreign to her. She’d had lessons, of course, but she didn’t think she’d ever stop preferring using her own two feet to get around.
Besides a static old eighties radio station and the scribbling of pencil on a paper attached to a clipboard, this test went as quietly as most of her day had gone. As she pulled the car to a stop she heard, "Congratulations, Miss Cassidy. You passed."
Harper kindly thanked the instructor and got out of the car, opening the back door to grab her things. When she reached for her backpack, she noticed a balled up piece of paper on the floor. Thinking perhaps it fell out of her things, she picked it up and stuffed it inside. If it turned out not to be hers, she could at the very least throw it away.
Beginning her walk back towards home, Harper had a bounce to her step. She felt good for the first time in a while. She’d accomplished so much today, and she planned to keep up her good work. But right now in particular she wanted someone to share her good news with. Tony, she knew, would be busy at this time of day, so she went to the next person on her list that she knew would care. Olivia Baker.

The Tie That Binds Us - Chapter Five (Make A Change)

She felt better now, away from the stifling environment school had become these past few days. She needed to get out of there. One day wouldn’t hurt. She couldn’t run from school forever even if she wanted to. It was her senior year after all, and she’d be out for good soon enough. While Mr. Porter had suggested she go home, that was one of the last places she wanted to be.
Instead, she just walked, letting her feet guide her to whatever destination they wanted. It shouldn’t have been a surprise when she found herself in front of Baker's Drug Store. She lingered there, recalling the last time she’d been inside.
It had been several days since Harper had heard Hannah talk about her dad having an affair. She planned on confronting him about it, and Harper had forgotten to ask if she ever did. As she stepped into Baker's Drug Store, the bell ringing as the door swung open and then shut again, Harper made a mental note to remind herself to say something the next time she saw Hannah. The store was empty, which was unfortunately not an unusual occurrence, but Harper, drawn away from her own thoughts, turned her attention to the only noise that could be heard, soft sobs.
Harper then made her way past the merchandise and behind the counter where she found Olivia Baker in tears on the floor. Not knowing what else to do, she got down and sat beside her, putting an arm around her when Olivia leaned on her shoulder. Harper sat there with her until her sobs became more subdued and Olivia was able to speak to her.
"Andy's having an affair," she confessed.
I know, Harper wanted to say, but she didn’t want to get Hannah in trouble. "Then he’s stupid," Harper said instead. "To want anyone but you is crazy," she added, the words slipping out as if they were the most natural thing for her to say. "I’m sorry." She didn’t know if she was apologizing for the words or for the awful situation Olivia found herself in. Either way, Harper supposed it didn’t exactly matter at the moment.
"Thank you." Neither of them knew what else to say, so Harper stood up and offered her hand to help Olivia off of the floor. She wiped away the last of her tears and accepted Harper's help. Once she was on her feet again, Olivia smiled at her, the smile itself a mixture of sweetness and sadness. Their clasped hands lingered for a moment before Olivia pulled away. "Thank you again for listening and just being there. I needed that."
"Of course," Harper replied. "Are you going to be okay?"
"I’ll be fine, Harper," Olivia softly assured, though she wasn’t entirely sure if she believed that herself. Harper nodded and turned to leave.
She hadn’t been inside Baker's Drug Store since that day. As she walked on past it now, she wondered if she’d ever been there for Hannah like that. According to Hannah, she hadn’t, and she suspected that was true. She didn’t know why she hadn’t been there. It’s not like Harper had never seen her hurting. She’d given her some kind words over the course of their friendship, encouraged her and listened but she always felt partially absent. There was a certain detachment in the way she had spoken to Hannah, as if she were too caught up in her own head to clear her thoughts and focus on her friend. Had that detached part of her changed when she comforted Olivia that day, or had it only been a case of right place, right time? Could she change?
Harper contemplated her actions as she walked the rest of the way home. Mr. Porter had let her take what she considered a mental health day, and while home wasn’t the best place for her mental health, she was too exhausted not to head straight for her bedroom. Luckily the house was quiet when she got there.
Harper was still focused on change, and whether or not she was capable of it. Everyone was, right? She had to think that, otherwise the world was truly hopeless and so was she. She’d have to start trying. She hated that this realization had come far too late to save Hannah. But without Hannah having said what she did in her tapes, this desire to change may not have come about at all.
Harper was living in self absorbed ignorance. She wasn’t vain or arrogant, certainly not narcissistic, but she was trapped in her own bubble of a world. She wasn’t sure when it had started, but she had her theory as to why. Being an only child, and a neglected one at that, Harper had to put herself first from a very young age, or risk her own survival by relying on her deadbeat mother to provide for her. She learned to cook at eight years old, and still had a small burn on her hand from one time it went wrong. She had to grow up too fast with no one there to count on. She became self sufficient to the point of isolating herself from the rest of the world. Now, at eighteen, she had years of damage to undo. She owed it to Hannah, and to herself to try and fix what her childhood had done to her. What she had, in part, done to herself.
She refused to talk to Mr. Porter about any of it. Or any other counselor. She didn’t trust anyone at Liberty and her mother's insurance probably couldn’t cover seeing a professional outside of school. So, armed with google, she was on her own. Luckily she was used to it. She looked into several different ways to be more self aware and decided to give it a go. First thing tomorrow morning she was going to start trying to be a better person.
The night seemed to pass so quickly for her. It was as if the precise moment her head hit her pillow, her alarm clock was already going off and waking her up. Despite it seeming like a short night, Harper was feeling energized. Mentally, she rattled off everything she planned to do today.
Get the work she missed from Tony, and check in on how he's doing. Lunch with Clay, and apologize for ghosting yesterday. Start working on college applications. And, was that it? Harper looked at the calendar on her phone. Her driving test was today. She’d nearly forgotten. She put it off until after she turned eighteen, seeing as she enjoyed walking to school, but she knew she’d need to learn if she planned on leaving Evergreen and going away to college. All in all, a busy day, but she felt ready to handle it.

The Tie That Binds Us - Chapter Four (One Step Forward, One Step Back)
Tumblr media
Summary: Harper confronts Tony. Harper thinks she can begin to move on, to heal, but it won’t be as easy as she hopes.
Word Count: 1,305
Warnings: Minor angst/anger
Tumblr media
"You said we need to talk, so start talking," Harper said, a hint of resentment in her voice. If Tony was involved in all this, Harper couldn’t understand why he didn’t tell her. He and Hannah were her two closest friends, and she’d let one of them down already. Was she now being betrayed by the other?
"Not here," Tony said, keeping his tone calm. Harper huffed but followed him around to the back of the garage with her arms folded, impatient for an explanation. "Hannah asked me to keep the backup tapes in case her instructions weren’t followed. And I," here Tony paused, and looked to the ground. "She came to my house with the tapes and I didn’t answer. Then I saw the ambulance at her house taking her away. There was nothing more I could do for her except make sure her story was heard. That’s why I went by Sheri's. When I didn’t see you at your locker at the end of the day, I knew you’d gotten them. I needed to be sure you’d pass them on."
"Like Hannah wanted," Harper interrupted somberly. She supposed she couldn’t really fault him for doing what he did, and not even for keeping it from her. They were the same, her and Tony, both of them not being there for Hannah when she’d needed them most. "I’m sorry, Tony. I shouldn’t have snapped at you. All this has just been...a lot."
"I know," he replied. "Believe me, I get it."
"I’ll see you tomorrow, alright?"
"Yeah, okay. Have a safe trip home. I could drive you if you want," he offered.
"I’m good, but thanks," she replied. Harper turned and walked off, relieved that she had cleared things up with Tony. She really couldn’t afford to lose another friend right now.
The following morning, after a fitful night of sleep at home, Harper got up and decided it was about time she made some changes. She threw on some faded jeans and one of her favorite t shirts, a dark yellow one with 'smile' written in a small black handwritten font, grabbed her backpack and headed for school. The walk was bright and sunny, lifting Harper's mood as much as could be expected with the rotten night of sleep she had gotten. She was tired enough that everything that had happened the day before seemed as if it were a dream.
The dream became reality once more when Harper got to school and saw Clay walking in just ahead of her. They’d both made it on the tapes for similar reasons, not by anything they directly did, but for what they should have done. She didn’t blame him for causing her death, nor did she truly blame Harper, but nonetheless, both of them had played their part in it.
Harper ran to catch up with Clay. She had no idea if he’d heard the tapes yet, so she decided she wouldn’t bring them up. She and Clay hadn’t talked much in their years at Liberty, and maybe it was time that Harper changed that. She remembered how much Hannah used to like him, and maybe this was her chance to finally get to know him.
"Clay," Harper called when she was within earshot.
"Hey, um, Harper, right?"
"Yep. That’s me. I thought maybe you and I could have lunch together today."
"Sure, I guess. But, why?" Clay's face was scrunched in confusion and Harper realized how absolutely random her offer seemed out of context.
"It’s just, after Hannah..." Harper trailed off, her smile faltering a bit as she attempted to find the words to explain her sudden interest in spending time with him. "I know you were close with her and I was close to her too and maybe we could both use a friend who knew Hannah right now."
Clay's expression softened and he nodded. "See you at lunch then, Harper." Harper let him walk off and she felt good about starting something with him. They both needed someone now that Hannah had left a hole in their lives. Maybe having each other would be good enough.
Harper finally walked into school, making her way almost invisibly through the hallways. Since Hannah's death very few people seemed to look her way. Many, because they didn’t want to talk to the girl who had just lost her best friend, but a few knew that Harper was a part of this whole thing. That she was one of the thirteen reasons, so they avoided her like the plague.
Then there was Bryce Walker. One of the last on the tapes, she knows he wouldn’t have gotten them yet. So he was yet unfazed by the stigma of them that the rest of the listeners felt. He was also unfazed by Hannah's death. He still made comments about her that made Harper's skin crawl. He was still same old Bryce, sick bastard that he was. Today was no exception. As Harper passed him, he whistled after her, but she didn’t react. She knew it would only encourage him. Instead, she gritted her teeth and pressed on, walking towards her locker.
As she slammed the door of the locker shut, backpack safely inside, Harper heard her name over the loudspeaker. "Harper Cassidy, if you could please report to Mr. Porter's office. He’d like to have a word with you."
Harper sighed. It seemed she couldn’t avoid anyone on the tapes today. She had to remember, Mr. Porter didn’t know anything about them yet, so she had to keep quiet, though it’s not like she wanted to speak to him anyway.
She arrived at his office with a forced smile and he welcomed her in and asked her to sit down. "I just wanted to call you down here to check in. I know after Hannah's passing you might be feeling sad, angry, or confused. Anything you’re feeling is perfectly normal," he assured, but to Harper it sounded like he was reading from a script.
"I know," she replied curtly, trying not to snap at him. "I’m fine, all things considered."
Mr. Porter could probably sense Harper's agitation and had he questioned it, Harper didn’t know what she would have done. "There’s nothing you want to talk about," he asked instead, taking her at her word.
"No," she answered. She was glaring daggers at him and was clenching her jaw so tightly that she knew it would be sore later if she had to keep it up for much longer. Harper didn’t know why she harbored so much resentment for him in comparison to anyone else on Hannah's tapes. Maybe it was because he was an adult, and a mental health professional at that, and he did nothing when Hannah came to him. This man was the last straw before Hannah took her life, and thinking about that was making Harper sick to her stomach.
Before she could quell the nauseous feeling rising in her throat she leaned forward, grabbing the brown plastic garbage bin nearby and retching into it. After, she didn’t know whether she felt better or worse. Mr. Porter watched on, a more genuine look of concern now on his face. "Perhaps you should go home, Miss Cassidy. Have a friend collect your assignments for the day."
Under normal circumstances, she would have argued. She didn’t like missing school or falling behind, but perhaps it was for the best. Tony would get her stuff for her, and she’d have to tell him to give Clay a rain check on lunch. So that’s what she did. She walked out of Mr. Porter's office and found Tony, telling him vaguely what had happened and asking her favor of him. He nodded and with a small smile she thanked him, grabbed her bag and headed out.
