Robert Valentine had a plan. He’d graduate from college, sail around the world and then settle down to live out the Valentine legacy of working in the family business. His father also had a plan, and it featured only two of the three items on his list.
Unable to say no to the strict man who’d raised him, Robert gave up his dream of feeling the wind in his hair on the open seas. A chance encounter in Greenwich during summer break from Wharton further altered his plans.
A year later, he was married to a woman who not only shared his love of adventure but actively encouraged his carefree side. Becoming parents hadn’t been part of the plan, at least not so soon after getting married. But fate had other ideas.
As they stared down at the two tiny humans behind the glass of the nursery at Newport Hospital, he gently hooked one arm around Olivia’s waist. The boy was restless while the girl was asleep, their hands lightly touching.
“They’re beautiful, aren’t they?” Olivia murmured, still tired, her head resting on his shoulder.
Even though they’d known Olivia was carrying multiples, seeing them was a different reality. On top of that, the twins had arrived a month early. They still hadn’t landed on names or completed the nursery in the townhouse they’d bought near his work.
“We should come up with appropriate names,” he said quietly after a while. “Can’t keep calling them Thing One and Thing Two.”
“Imagine the shock on our parents’ faces if we put that on their birth certificates,” Olivia teased, her eyes swimming with laughter.
Robert chuckled, folding his wife in his arms. Being a father would change him; it was inevitable. But he didn’t have to give up his dreams, just adjust them for two more.
Now, all these years later, Robert watched his daughter’s even breathing as she lay sleeping on the hospital bed and wished he could turn back time to when she was a baby, tucked safe and sound in his arms.
The last two days had been harrowing and emotional. The panicked call from his son in the middle of the night, the long flight to Boston from Paris, the uncertainty about Cassie’s condition, and the anger when he and Olivia were denied entrance into the hospital.
But that was all over now, he sighed in relief. His daughter was no longer on death’s door. It would take time, but he’d been assured she would recover. If he thought Cassie wouldn’t be pissed at him for doubting her precious Dr. Ramsey, Robert would’ve whisked her off to the best specialists in the world for a second opinion.
Lost in thought, he didn’t notice Cassie’s eyelids fluttering as she slowly awoke. But he heard her whimpers and the sound of sheets rustling. He was out of the chair and by her bedside seconds before her eyes drifted open.
“Hey, kiddo,” Robert smiled softly, taking her hand.
“Daddy?” Cassie said in a confused tone, her voice reed thin and somewhat raspy.
She struggled to sit up, and he placed a steadying hand on her back while pressing a control button on the guardrail to raise the bed’s head. He adjusted the pillow to support her neck and poured a glass of water when she started coughing.
“Better?”
When she nodded, Robert set the glass down on the table. He turned away to drag the visitor’s chair closer to the bed and sat down, covering her hand with his palm. They smiled at each other, matching green eyes.
“You haven’t called me kiddo since I was ten,” she commented, smiling despite the sudden discomfort under her sternum.
The machines she was hooked up to briefly beeped before settling down as the pain subsided. Robert stroked the back of her hand with his thumb.
“Old habits,” he said, taking his eyes off the flashing numbers on the monitor. “You haven’t called me Daddy since you and Max decided that word was for babies.”
“Well, I feel weak as a baby right now, so that could be the reason,” she joked, and then tears filled her eyes, dripping down her cheeks. “I was so scared I’d never see you or Mom again. ”
Robert leaned in and wiped the tears away with his fingers, shushing her the way he used to when she was five and had a nightmare.
“When I was in that room, all I could think of was the last time you took us sailing,” she continued in a watery voice. “It was just before I moved to Boston. The fresh ocean breeze tossing my hair, the taste of salt on our lips as water crashed around us. Max cursing as the unruly waves rocked the boat and almost tipped us over. Your laughter booming in the wind. That feeling of truly being alive.”
Leaving the chair, he sat on the side of the bed and folded her into his arms, mindful of the drip lines and wires.
“You are alive, Cassie honey,” he whispered over and over as sobs wracked her body, and she burrowed her face into his chest. “You’re here, safe in my arms.”
Eventually, the storm passed, and he returned to his seat. The comforting silence stretched, broken only by the beeps and hums of the machines.
“Where’s Mom?”
“At the hotel, hopefully getting some rest,” Robert explained. “She barely slept these last couple of days. Max, too. Your brother pretends to be invincible, but he was running on fumes by the time we got here.”
“Maybe if he drank coffee every now and then,” Cassie said with a wry twist of her lips.
Robert shook his head in amusement and chuckled, well familiar with his children’s opposing views on this matter and their needling of each other as a result.
“Have you seen Ethan?”
“Yes, he dropped by an hour ago to check on you,” Robert replied, hiding his disquiet at how Cassie’s eyes locked on the closed door, waiting for the other man to walk in.
He steepled his index fingers under his chin as he sprawled on the chair, stretching his legs out under the bed. “I take it you’re both still hiding your relationship?”
Robert was glad Cassie at least had the good sense to look abashed. He wasn’t happy with the turn of events, but his wife was convinced it was the real deal and they should give the couple space to work it out. Olivia’s instincts were flawless, which was the only reason he exercised restraint.
“What do you think of him?” she asked, her eyes beseeching him to understand. “You didn’t say anything during or after the weekend in Newport. I really want you to like him, Daddy.”
“He’s certainly different from Jackson or anyone else you’ve dated before,” he said neutrally. “Older, reserved, and perhaps a little austere for my carefree daughter.”
“That’s just the side he shows everyone else,” Cassie said, her voice full of conviction. “He’s different when it’s just the two of us. Granted, our relationship is still evolving, but he cares for me, deeply.”
“I know, Cassie,” Robert said, remembering the tender look in the other man’s eyes earlier. “This isn’t up for debate. But as your father, I’m allowed to be concerned. Gossip from a workplace romance is rarely kind to the woman, especially when there’s a power imbalance.”
He held up a hand when she opened her mouth to protest. “You still have two years left in your training here. All I ask is that you be careful and protect your reputation if not your heart.”
Before Cassie could respond, there was a perfunctory knock on the door, and then it swung open. Ethan Ramsey crossed the threshold and suddenly stopped, causing the nurse accompanying him to crash into his back, the tray in her hand rattling before she steadied it.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Ethan said, his brows furrowing as if sensing he’d stepped into a quagmire. “We need to draw Dr. Valentine’s blood, check her vitals and run a few tests.”
“Yes, of course,” he said, pushing the chair back and standing up. “I’ll let you get on with it while I grab a coffee and check in on Olivia.”
Robert turned to smile down at Cassie. “Why don’t I get you something to eat?”
“Well, I am feeling a bit peckish,” Cassie mused, a teasing twinkle in her eyes. “Hospital food sucks.”
“I’ll ask the chef at the hotel to whip up your favorites.” Robert leaned down and kissed her forehead. “Be good, and no more heroics.”
He nodded at Ethan, who came to stand across from him on the other side of the bed. He noted the softness in Cassie’s eyes, the concern in Ethan’s and felt like a third wheel.
As Robert left the room, he glanced at the nurse, oblivious to their situation, and hoped Cassie heeded his advice. Ethan seemed decent enough, but if he hurt Cassie…. Well, when it came to his children, all bets were off.

Mamma Mia
Tumblr media
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Kaycee) Also featuring Kaycee's parents, David & Rose and a special celebrity guest appearance (not ABBA lol)
Rating: Teen+
Warnings: Suggested sexual activity, nothing explicit. Brief mention of alcohol.
Words: 2123 (plus texts)
Summary: Kaycee's parents are moving out of their home, and while she's there helping pack up, she makes an unsettling discovery.
A/N: My face claim for Kaycee's mother, Rose, is Dianne Lane. I decided to dig into her history to have a little fun with this fic. I hope you enjoy it! I'm participating in @choicesmonthlychallenge' s Prompts: Old Photographs. Also: Good Food and Love.

The door to Kaycee's parent's home was barely opened when she jumped into Ethan's arms, wrapping her legs tightly around his waist and nearly knocking the wind out of him in the process.
"Offh!" He exclaimed, holding her close in his arms. "If that's the greeting I get when we've been separated for a few days, I may need to start spending more time away from home."
"Don’t you dare!” She scolded as she stepped back onto the ground.
“Aww,” her father, David, teased as he and Rose entered the foyer, arm in arm. “Rose, honey, remember when you used to greet me like that?”
“I still would,” she chuckled. “But I’d probably end up hurting us both.”
“I think you’d manage just fine,” Ethan assured as he greeted Rose.
“Her? Yes,” David said, extending his hand. “But me?”
“I know a great back surgeon in Boston,” Ethan grinned.
David pat Ethan on the back. “It’s great to see you again. Thanks for coming to help us.”
“Of course! It’s the least I can do.”
“Well, come to the kitchen,” Rose insisted. “Most things are packed away, but I still have some refreshments for you after that long trip!
“She wouldn’t be a respectable Italian mother if she didn’t,” Kaycee smiled. “I, of course, took after my father’s side of the family in that regard.”
“That’s OK,” Ethan replied, kissing Kaycee atop her head. “That’s why you have me!”
The family sat around the kitchen table, enjoying Rose’s food and conversation, when David brought the gathering to a halt. “Oh, crap. I just remembered that I have to return the tools I rented to the hardware store by seven or get charged an extra day.”
Rose peeked at her watch. “You still have three hours; there’s plenty of time.”
“Yes, but then I wouldn’t have time to take my future son-in-law to the Berwyn Tavern for a few drinks.”
“Daddy,” Kaycee grinned. “You don’t have to come up with excuses. If you want some guy time with my fiance, all you have to do is ask.”
“After the way, I saw you greet him? I was afraid you’d assault me if I suggested it!”
“Stop!” Kaycee laughed.  “You guys go and have fun.  Just bring him back to me in one piece, Dad!”
“You better believe it!” Dave insisted. “I need his help with the move tomorrow!”
Ethan leaned over to kiss Kaycee goodbye, whispering in her ear when he did. “This would be the perfect time to speak to your mother.”
“Gee,” she rolled her eyes. “You’re not the best diagnostician in the world for nothing.”
“OK, wiseass,” he replied with a smirk. “Text me and let me know how it goes.”
~~~~~
Kaycee and Rose went to the kitchen and began packing the few remaining items that were not boxed. As the hours passed, they discussed when they first moved to the house, Kaycee’s teenage years, and all the memories they had made there over time. The topics kept flowing, but Kaycee couldn’t work up the nerve to ask about the one she couldn’t get from her mind. But the clock eventually reminded her that her father and Ethan would be home soon. With a deep breath, she began to speak.
“Mom?” She spoke tentatively.
“Yes, dear,” Rose said, tossing a colander into a box. “What is it?”
“I… I hope you won’t be mad… because I assume you wanted to keep this private… but when I was packing up your….”
“Oh, my God!” Rose gasped. “Kaycee! Tell me you didn’t pack up the drawer next to your father’s side of the bed! Did you?”
“What? Wait… no! Iwww! Mom!”
“Mom, what? We’re both consenting adults, you know. There’s nothing wrong with it!”
“Great. So would you like me to give you all the details of my sex life with Ethan, then?”
“Only if you have good pointers,” Rose winked, and the two women began to laugh. “But I interrupted you. What were you about to ask, dear?”
“When I was going through old boxes in the garage… I found….” Kaycee hesitated.
Growing impatient, Rose widened her eyes and circled her wrist, encouraging her daughter to speak up. “You found?”
“I found pictures of you and… someone who wasn’t Dad.”
Her mother’s brow furrowed, knowing nothing untoward was to be found. Then a knowing look appeared.
“Ooooh.  Were these… older… pictures?”
“Yes! Ancient!”
“Hey, slow down there,” Rose scolded. “ There are no ancient pictures with me in them! Do you understand?”
“Of course not,” Kaycee blushed. “But there are pictures with you and… Jon Bon Jovi?”
Rose folded a dish towel and put it in the box, sealing it before she sat down and motioned for Kaycee to join her.
“Yes. There are pictures of Jon and me.”
“Oh. Jon? Jon! Wait, you’re on a first-name basis with Jon Bon Jovi?”
“Considering we dated for five months, yeah. He kind of insisted that I call him by his first name.”
Kaycee’s jaw fell open in astonishment. She attempted to speak, but all that came out were desperate little breaths with mere syllables clinging to them.
“You… you… you… date… you dated… you.”
“Relax,” Rose said, touching her daughter’s knee.  “Do you need me to get you a drink? I think I have some Amaretto that we haven’t packed yet….”
“No, I don’t need a drink, Mom.  What I need is… you dated Jon Bon Jovi? Like, one of the biggest rock stars of your time?”
“Don’t act so startled, young lady! Your Mom had it going on, you know!”
“I know,” Kaycee laughed, “You’ve still got it going on, but… but… how?”
“I was an Italian girl from Philly,” she shrugged. “My family summered at the Jersey Shore, and Jon’s from Jersey, Italian, too.”
“OK, there’s over a million Italians in New Jersey, Ma… you’re not explaining anything.”
“If you’d allow me to finish. Your Uncle Angelo and Aunt Irene were still dating; her family was distant cousins of the Bongiovis. They were supposed to attend a family wedding one weekend, but he got sick.  Since I was at the shore house, Irene asked me to tag along with her.  Jon was there, we met, and as they say, the rest is history.”
“Jesus, Ma! You bagged Jon Bon Jovi!”
Rose nudged her daughter with her elbow. “Impressive, right!”
“Holy shit! Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
“Have you told me about all the superstars you’ve slept with?”
“Yeah, well, Ethan is as celebrity as I got,” Kaycee laughed.  “I haven’t slept with Chris Evans and withheld from you! Wait, how old were you?”
“I was twenty-one, just shy of twenty-two.”
“But wait! Didn’t you start dating Dad when you were twenty-one.”
“I did,” Rose nodded.  “We dated for three months, and then we broke up.”
“You! And Dad! You broke up?!?”
“For a bit, yes.  And that’s when I met Jon. It was one of the reasons Irene asked me to go to the wedding with her. She thought it would cheer me up.”
“And apparently it did….”
“Yeah,” Rose smiled. “It certainly did.”
“OK, Ma, can you not be so enthusiastic? Back to the story, so what happened next?”
“There’s not much to tell.  Jon and I dated for five months, and I even went on tour with him,” she said with pride.
“You? You did?”
“I did!”
“You’re telling me that Nonno, my grandfather, allowed you to go on tour with Bon Jovi?!”
“Allowed is a bit of a strong word.  I may have told him I was spending time at the shore with Irene’s family… and then he found a picture of me in a concert in Vegas.  He wasn’t too pleased.”
“I’ll bet!”
“It was for the best,” Rose shrugged. “At least he didn’t find out a week later. We would have been in Sydney.  Then he really would have flipped.”
“Oh, my God! Ma, you were… you were….”
“I was badass, dear!”
“Yeah, I guess… I guess you were, but why did you break up? How did you end up with Dad again?”
“Once I was back in Philly, and Jon was on the road, it was hard to maintain a relationship.  He had a few shows in the area, so we spent time together again.  But, just before that, I ran into your father down by Love Park.  After seeing your Dad, I realized there was still something there.  So, I talked to Jon, and it turned out he and his high-school sweetheart had just started talking again and… we knew it was time to end things.”
“His high school sweetheart? Didn’t they…”
“Got married.  Yep.  Dorothea, lovely girl.”
“You met her too?”
“She’s a third cousin.  Honey, we’re Italian.  We’re always connected somehow.”
“Oh, my God.  This is just so much to take in.  Does Dad know?”
“Does Dad know what?” Kaycee was startled as she heard her father’s voice bellow from down the hall.
Rose stood up and met her husband, resting her hand on his shoulder. “David, Kaycee found the pictures of Jon and me.”
“Oh, those,” David rolled his eyes.
“I still can’t believe it,” Kaycee breathed.  “Dad, did it bother you that Mom was dating a freaking rock star?”
“At the time? Sure, but you seem to be forgetting something.”
“What’s that?”
“Your Mom left Jon Bon Jovi… for me,” David blew a puff of air on his nails, then rubbed them proudly against his sweater.
“That is impressive. I mean, I love you, Dad, but we’re talking Jon Bon Jovi… at his peak!”
Ethan moved next to Kaycee, draped his arm around her shoulder, and smiled. “Fortunately for me, he’s no longer at his peak, or maybe I’d have something to worry about.”
“I don’t know,” she replied.  “I know he’s like sixty now, but the man is still hot!”
“Settle down, Kaycee,” Ethan grumbled.
“Oh, relax you!” she smiled. “You should be happy I’m into older men.”
“Hey! I’m not that old!”
“Wow, my mom dated Jon Bon Jovi. Suddenly I feel like a failure.”
“Kaycee, I’m standing right here….” Ethan reminded.
She looked at him with a wide grin, wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed his cheek.
“And that is exactly where you belong,” she beamed.
“You know, enough talking.  We should go eat.  All our things are packed, so, David, why don’t we take the kids to Savona’s.”
“An excellent choice, Rose. And, as we’ve learned tonight, you always make the best choices.”
Kaycee couldn’t help but laugh.  “I tend to agree, Dad.  And not just because I wouldn’t be here if she hadn’t dumped the rock star.  But I think you’re the biggest star of all.”
David looked over at Ethan as Kaycee hugged him.  “See, this is why we stopped at one child. There’s no way I could have brainwashed two this well.”
“That’s enough,” Rose laughed.  “Let’s go eat!”
“Now there’s my Mom!” Kaycee giggled. “Are we happy?  Let’s eat.  Sad! Let’s eat.  Awkward family history about Rock stars? EAT!”
“What did you say earlier, sweetheart,” Rose smiled. “I wouldn’t be a respectable Italian mother if I didn’t.  Now, let's go before Savona’s closes!”
As they made their way to the car, Ethan tugged at Kaycee’s hand, holding her back for just a moment.
“Yes?” she asked.
“You’re not disappointed, are you?”
“About my Mom?”
“No.  About you.  You sure you didn’t need having a fling with a rock star off your bucket list?”
“Oh, but I did,” Kaycee stated, leaving Ethan’s eye bulging.
“You.. you did?” He sputtered.  “You don’t have to share, but uh… you certainly never mentioned that.”
“Well,” she purred, snuggling closer to him.  “I thought you knew? After all, you were my rockstar!”
A bright grin spread across Ethan’s face before he pulled her in for a kiss.  “You know, maybe I’m not as opposed to that roleplay idea you had as I organically thought.”
“Really!” she gushed.  “Can you play the guitar naked for me?”
“Maybe when we’re back in Boston.”
“Kids!” Rose hollered from outside. “Let’s go! If we miss Savona’s, we’ll be eating at Wawa’s.”
“Well, we can’t have that, Rose,” Ethan yelled from inside.  He started toward the door, but this time it was Kaycee who held him back.
“You know, I’m holding you to the rock star roleplay thing,” she teased.
“I’ll be sure to purchase a guitar.”
“Would you wear leather pants, too?”
“It’s negotiable,” he smiled, walking her to the door.
“And maybe a big, bushy wig?”
“Kaycee?”
“Yes.”
“You’re pushing it. Now, stop and get in the car before I tell your Dad about this.”
“Oh no!” she laughed, hopping inside. “Not until we’re officially married!”
Chapter 6
Tobias Carrick didn’t expect to meet his long lost friend turned foe today, certainly not under the humongous roof of the third richest man in America, competing against him for the sake of saving his hospital. Yet, here he was, staring at Ethan Ramsey in flesh and blood. He looks like he hasn’t aged a day, though the beard and glasses make him look more matured than he acts to be.
Hirata and Mirani following Ramsey like puppies as usual. He recognises the other doctor, from their encounter at the deli a few days back. He did not learn her name, but was shocked to see her as a part of one of the most prestigious diagnostic team in the country. A resident in her second year missing out trivial diagnosis like cyanosis, did Edenbrook and Ethan Ramsey forget how to teach?
He was enjoying this little arrangement that Bloom came up with, never missing out on a chance to one-up Ethan Ramsey. But when his “friend” stormed out the heavy wooden doors he was not surprised but disappointed. He was rather shocked when his protege followed him without thinking twice.
Before following Mr. Bloom inside he could see Ramsey and Bose in a heated argument through the glass panels. He was surprised further because in all the years he had known Ethan Ramsey he had never seen an attending talk to him that way, much less a resident, had his “friend” changed that much? His surprise continued when Ramsey came back for a chance to crack this case, but he didn’t let his face show. Does this mere resident have special persuasion powers? He decided to put his head in the game instead, because he was playing to see his “friend” lose.
Chapter 8
The sun shone brightly, the smell of hot dogs and beers engulfing the atmosphere this was one day in a year, Tobias pretends he followed his childhood dream of playing softball professionally. The doctors from both the hospitals mingled about, he had so many people to greet but in the sea of known and unknown people he certainly didn’t expect Ethan Ramsey to be there.
He has been going against Edenbrook for almost half a decade and never in all those years had he ever seen or ever expected the infamous Dr. Ramsey to grace them with his presence. What changed? He thought and almost immediately saw Meera Bose beside Ethan.
She was a decent player he thought, throwing the first pitch and being responsible for Tobias Carrick’s out was enough proof of that. But he couldn’t ignore the small smile at the corner of his “friend’s” lips whenever Bose threw a perfect pitch.
Old habit’s die hard and Tobias thought rubbing the case of Stephanie Hill while grabbing a water was the perfect plan. He raised an eyebrow when the young resident said “paitent care isn’t a game.” Good to know Ramsey passed down his virtues to his residents. But the fire he saw in Bose’s eyes on mentioning her friend’s betrayal mirrored the fire he had witnessed in his own “friend’s” eyes more than ten years ago due to a different betrayal.
The fight had grown heated but when Ethan took a protective stance in front of Meera giving Terrance a death threat Tobias was astounded. He had known this man for a very long time, was Ramsey falling for her? Because he hadn’t seen him this defensive since… before he could finish that thought, chaos broke free.
The final innings could have gone better, but one thing that always set Carrick apart from Ramsey was the ability to accept defeat. He watched as Bose ran towards the Edenbrook clan, her friends and colleague wrapping her up. As he turned to leave he watched Ethan join the crowd his eyes soft on Meera’s browns a playful smile on his lips, hands brushing lightly. Tobias’s earlier suspicion returned and as a diagnostician he thought he had an answer, but as one of Ethan Ramsey’s oldest “friend” he could do with some more evidence.
Tumblr media
Chapter 9
Logging into his tablet, Tobias looked suspiciously at the recent activity. Ethan Ramsey, at Kenmore? He didn’t have any ongoing research projects and Ethan is not the type of man who likes to take an afternoon walk around the neighborhood.
“Doctor, the patient is ready for you,” the nurse called. Tobias nodded, opening his new patient chart and getting to work, making a mental note of catching up with Ramsey before he leaves the premises.
Tobias stopped Dr. Simpson in the middle of his presentation, was that Meera Bose? He rushed out of the patient room following her still not believing his eyes. But when he saw Mirani with her he knew something was up. Three members of the Edenbrook diagnostic team cannot be behind enemy lines at the same time co-inccidently. Calling security Tobias makes a run for it.
The two doctors make a narrow escape and he comes out just in time to see his “friend” zoom away from under his nose.
“Well played Ramsey, we’ll get you next time.”
Chapter 11
The news of Senator Ed and and his aide had spread like wildfire. Transfer patients from Edenbrook kept Tobias fairly busy, but he didn’t know why his thoughts drifted back to Meera.
“How was she doing?”
“Did they have any answers at all?”
“Is she not going to make it?”
“How was… how was Ethan doing?”
Tobias found himself choking on his own breath. In need of fresh air, he put down his tablet and took shelter in a supply closet. He doesn’t remember when was the last time he was here. More unpleasant thoughts circled his brain, Tobias punched the door out of frustration and helplessness. The door opened, and Aurora came in, the frustration and helplessness reflected on her face made Tobias decide that it was time to set aside all the age-old differences between him and Ethan and their respective hospitals.
Nothing less than a crowd was formed in front of the patient room. All of Meera’s friends, family and well-wishers stood by her side. All of them dejected and crestfallen. Ethan Ramsey stood at the forefront his heart burdened with melancholy, but too stubborn to show it in his face. Tobias had known his “friend” long enough to see right through the facade.
Tobias straightened his face, “and you won’t be alone.”
Ramsey’s face shifts from shock to thankful in a mili second and Tobias stops him right there. Everyone says their goodbye one by one and follows Baz and June into the lab. Tobias notices his “friend” not making a move.
“Shouldn’t we call Dr. Ramsey?” one of the doctors suggest.
“No. He should be there with her,” Tobias smiled. “This is where he will do the most good. Besides, I know what I am doing.” He flashes his signature smile only to receive an eye roll from Hirata.
Tobias monitored the sodium-potassium level, no this won’t work, he shaked his head. Facing another dead end, he decided its better to take a small break before getting back to work. He exited the lab and walked towards Meera’s room. The corridor lights had been dimmed, he felt like a ghost wandering the halls. He stopped in front of the window, only to see Ethan all suited up, holding Meera as close as he humanly could with the plastic barrier in between them.
He needed no more confirmations. He was sure his “friend” had fallen head over heels for Meera. It had been a long time since he had been this candid with someone, it had been so long since someone had broken all of his walls and reached for his heart and it had been so long since Ethan’s heart had shattered. Tobias was immature back then and partly responsible for what had happened but today he was not going to let that happen a second time. With renewed determination Tobias walked back towards the lab.
Just like Tobias had guessed, Ethan was still there in his hazmat suit helping Meera vomit into a basin when they returned the next morning. The child-like grin on his face on hearing about the antidote was unlike him. Tobias explained the chemistry behind their discovery, expecting atleast a couple questions from Ethan but the absence of that made him realize that he was a changed man. The sheer delight on Ethan Ramsey’s face as he administered the serum was one of a kind. He and Meera locked eyes, a silent understanding between them.
The waiting part was the worst, but once the latest lab results showed no trace of toxin in Bose’s bloodstream the entire team gathered around the patient room. Ethan sprinted through the doors, and Meera flew into his arms, tears breaking free. Ethan looked outside holding Tobias’ gaze for a little longer than necessary, while Tobias returned his signature smirk.
Chapter 17
The rumor mill had a field day with the news that the great Ethan Ramsey had kissed a resident, Meera Bose in an atrium full of people. While the betting pool regarding how long they were dating and whether Meera slept her way to the top were the hottest topic in and around the hospital, Tobias Carrick was just content that his diagnostic skills remained undefeated and he still knew his "friend" through and through.
Hii 🥰
I saw this picture and thought it might inspire a fic or an edit (no pressure 🥰)
I'm so sorry this took so long to answer @peonierose 🤦🏻‍♀️ I had a lot of Choices couples in mind for this picture 😂 It has taken me a while to think of just the right story for this one and I think I finally have. After seeing Ethan tortured in some of my fics recently, I decided to do a drabble of him and an OC I mentioned in A Glimpse. For this story, we see how these two got together.
(Ethan Ramsey x OC*Sophie Triano) with some urging from (Tobias Carrick x Chris Valentine) in a Choices Open Heart drabble
Something Sweet
"How was Bora Bora?" Ethan asked.
"Perfection itself." Tobias replied. "Chris and I had the best time there."
Ethan studied him. "You don't look very tan for a man who has been on an island for two weeks."
Tobias smirked. "But I do look tan enough for a man who was on a honeymoon with his wife."
Ethan rolled his eyes.
"Where's Chris?"
"Studying with Sienna." Tobias replied.
He eyed Ethan for a moment. Since they were alone, he decided to find out what happened after he and Chris left their wedding reception.
"By the way, how did you get back to the hotel?"
"How do you think?" Ethan replied.
"Who gave you a ride?" Tobias asked.
"Your brother did."
"Which one?"
Ethan stopped trying to complete some paperwork. He leaned back in his chair, set his hands behind his head, and focused silently on Tobias.
"It was Hugh." He finally said. "Why?"
"No reason." Tobias grumbled.
Ethan went back to work.
"If you rode with Hugh, then you must have ridden with Veronica."
"That would be a logical assumption since she is married to your brother." Ethan drily remarked.
Tobias refused to comment on that. "And if you were with Veronica, then you must have met her cousin, Sophie."
Ethan glanced up, eyes narrowed.
"So?" Tobias moved Ethan's laptop to the side. "What did you think of her?"
"She seems nice."
"Nice?" Tobias groaned. "Come on, Ethan."
"Can we get back to work or do you feel the need to bother me a little longer?"
Tobias shook his head. "Sophie is just your type."
"You haven't known my type since college." Ethan pointed out.
Tobias quirked an eyebrow and waited.
Ethan glared at him for the reminder he had fallen for Chris too.
"Sophie looks nothing like her." He bit out.
"I know that, but she has some similar personality traits that I think you'll like."
Tobias decided to drop that brief comparison when Ethan glared bordered on murderous.
"Hugh told me Sophie moved to Boston."
"She moved back to Boston." Ethan corrected, grateful to not be talking anymore about finding a woman like Chris. "Veronica and Sophie are expanding their business. She opened a bakery here a couple of months ago."
"Have you been by yet?"
Ethan rubbed a hand down his face. "I haven't."
He held his hand up to silence Tobias the moment he saw his mouth open.
"If I say I'll go by later this week, will you drop the subject and let me finish what I was typing?"
"I'll drop it for now, but we are discussing it again and again until you go see her." Tobias smirked at him.
"You are a colossal pain in my ass, you know that?" Ethan grumbled. "Go find someone else to bother."
"And leave you alone?" Tobias clucked his tongue in disapproval. "That wouldn't be very-- where are you going?"
"To see Sophie." Ethan snapped. "Right now, I'll do anything to get you to shut up!"
Tobias watched him storm out of the diagnostic office. He then sent a quick text to Chris, letting her know she could come inside.
So far, their plan to help Ethan find someone was off to a great start.
***************
"Don't breathe." Sophie whispered to those watching.
She carefully placed the last delicate sugar flower at an angle that defied gravity upon the five tier cake and carefully climbed off her step stool.
"Well?" She beamed at her staff. "What do you think?"
"I think we need to take them off now and store them before one breaks." Her store manager, Terry, declared. "You've got three more cakes to work on this week and the last thing we need is--"
"Ms. Triano!" One of the employees called out. "You have a visitor at the front."
Terry's voice went a higher octave when she began to leave.
"Sophie!" He cried. "The flowers!"
"They'll be fine." She winked at him. "You worry too much."
She chuckled over his look of disbelief.
Sophie couldn't help but be optimistic that all was working like she and Veronica planned. Ever since they were little girls with their Easy Bake ovens, they knew they wanted to open their own bakery one day. With their family's support, the two cousins graduated from the French Culinary Institute and opened up a bakery in New York.
It wasn't long before their cakes were featured in bridal magazines across the globe. Veronica and Sophie entered competitions on Food Network to gain even more exposure. Soon, they had orders years in advance for their baked treats.
They knew they should expand, but what made their cakes so popular, was that they each made every part of it themselves. They had staff to help with the mixing and all, but they were the true cake artists. Everything they designed from sugar blew everyone's mind.
For the first time in ten years, the cousins worked apart. Veronica needed to stay in New York with Hugh's work being there and their children were happy in their current schools. Since Sophie was single with no children of her own, she was the one to volunteer to open another bakery.
She'd wanted to come back to Boston for a while now. Though she thoroughly enjoyed working in New York, there was nothing like being back in her hometown. She needed that sense of comfort as she made all the decisions on her own. She still called Veronica multiple times a day, but this venture rested mostly upon her shoulders.
Sophie straightened her chef's jacket as she crossed into the main bakery. Cases gleamed under Edison bulbs revealing a variety of desserts. Cookies, tarts, pies, scones, cakes, etc. were all on display to tempt everyone who walked through her door. She did a quick visual sweep to make sure everything was up to her high standards before looking for her visitor.
Her eyes widened at the sight of the doctor she'd met at Tobias and Chris's wedding. Of all the people she thought she would see again, Ethan Ramsey seemed the least likely.
It wasn't that he ignored her at the wedding. He even talked to her about her bakery. He simply seemed to be preoccupied with something else.
***************
Ethan watched as she made her way over to him. He'd thought she was pretty the night he met her, but seeing her in chef's mode brought a smile to his face. She was in her element and the confidence rolled off of her adding even more to her beauty.
"Hey." She smiled at him. "What are you doing here?"
"You said I could come anytime I wanted something sweet." He spread his arms. "Here I am."
"And just what do you crave, Ethan?" She teased. "Are you a sugary puff kind of man or do you want something bitter?"
"No sugary puffs" He walked over to look at her offerings. "Though I will admit that most of this makes me think a diabetic coma might be worth it."
She laughed. "Follow me, Dr. Ramsey."
His eyebrow raised as he followed her off to a smaller room. There was a table and a set of chairs along with a cooler filled with various drinks.
"Have a seat." Sophie insisted.
She sat down across from him, pulled out a small notebook from her pocket and clicked a pen open.
"Now then." She raised her eyes to his. "Would you mind answering a few questions?"
"For?" He countered.
"To learn all your secrets." She replied.
His eyes widened.
Sophie laughed, shaking her head. "Easy there. I was teasing you. I'm wanting to understand your palette."
Ethan actually flushed.
"Then, yes, go ahead."
"Just say the first word that comes to mind." Sophie told him. "Fruit?"
"Apple."
Sophie wrinkled her nose.
"What's wrong with apples?"
"Nothing. I'm not a big fan of them. I'm more of a berry girl."
Her gaze dropped down to his white doctor's coat. "Though I guess I shouldn't be surprised with you saying apple."
Ethan relaxed in his chair. "They are good for you."
"I'll stick with raspberries."
"I like those too." Ethan added.
"You do?" She set her pen down. "Do you like dark chocolate?
"I do." He replied.
Sophie got to her feet. "Wait here."
She went through a set of double doors and returned with a slice of chocolate cake covered in a dark chocolate ganache.
"Try this." She handed him a fork.
Ethan's eyes widened with the first bite. A medley of the tart raspberry compote with slightly sweet chocolate left him wanting more.
"Good?" She prodded.
"It's incredible." He took another bite. "Best cake I've had in a long time."
She beamed at him. "Talk like that will make you my favorite customer."
He chuckled. "I'm tempted to buy the rest of the cake."
"No need."
She went back through the double doors and before they could shut, she was back with a black box tied with a white bow in her hands.
"You boxed the cake up before I even tried it?"
Sophie nodded a touch proudly. "I knew you would love it."
"How much do I owe you?" He got to his feet, reaching for his wallet.
"It's on the house." She replied.
"Oh." Ethan took the box from her. "Thank you."
Terry stuck his head through the double doors.
"Sophie!" He hissed without looking at Ethan. "The flowers! Carlton bumped the table and gave me a mild heat attack. Get them back into storage!"
Sophie pinched the bridge of her nose. "I'll be right there."
"You have flowers too?" Ethan asked.
"No. I make them." She waved goodbye. "Drop by anytime Dr. Ramsey."
Sophie paused at the door and winked at him. "I might even give you something else you'll love."
Ethan blinked in surprise once she disappeared. He wasn't quite certain how to take her parting words.
He frowned in thought during the drive back to the hospital.
"She meant more desserts." He told himself. "That's all she could have meant."
Once at Edenbrook, he sat in his car a few extra minutes. He eyed the black box and knew why he couldn't stop trying to see hidden meanings in her words and actions. He'd allowed Tobias to get in his head about there possibly being something more with Sophie.
He refused to give it another thought. He was too busy and too intelligent to ponder what women meant when talking to him. Of course, if Sophie did mean it in a flirtatious manner, then he would naturally respond in either a flirty fashion of his own or cold disinterest.
He picked up the box, a hint of a smile on his lips as he thought of her knowing he would love her cake.
If she was interested in him, he might be interested in her to.
*******************
A couple of days later...
"Any plans for your days off?" Chris asked.
Ethan kept pace with her as they walked towards their patient's room. "I'm going to the ballet Thursday night. They are performing The Sleeping Beauty."
"Oh?" Chris couldn't help but smile. "That sounds awfully romantic."
Ethan softly groaned. He knew what was coming next.
"Do you have anyone in particular you're taking with you?" Chris prodded, trying her best to look innocent.
"Chris." Ethan grumbled.
"Yes?" She was completely unfazed by the way he said her name.
"Tobias is rubbing off on you."
"I do more than rubbing." Tobias remarked from behind them.
Chris swatted him playfully with the file folder in her hand.
"What are we talking about?" Tobias asked, once he was walking along her other side.
"Ethan has a romantic night planned." Chris explained before Ethan could get a word out.
"Really?" Tobias looked over her head at him. "About time."
"I was just about to find out who Ethan invited to share this romantic night at the ballet."
"The ballet." Tobias slipped his arm around Chris when he noticed Ethan's face contort into irritated anger. "Can't set the mood much better than that."
"Enough!" Ethan snapped. "I'm not taking anyone to the ballet!"
"Why not?" Chris stopped him from walking on.
She placed her hands on her hips and backed him into the wall with her narrowed eyes and clipped tone.
"Are you honestly going to stand there and tell me that you are going to spend an evening of dinner and ballet without a date?!"
"I," Ethan hesitated. "Um..."
There was something about Chris's temper that made everyone take a step back. Even he got caught off guard from time to time.
But he wasn't in any mood for it today.
He glared down at her. He decided he wasn't going to be cowed by his former protege.
"I am planning an evening of enjoyment for myself."
Chris threw her hands up in exasperation, almost hitting both Ethan and Tobias in their faces.
"Men!" She grumbled. "Such a waste of bloody oxygen half the time."
Tobias groaned. "Welp, you set her off for the day. No man will be safe."
Ethan winced when Tobias smacked him on the back of the head.
"Don't tell her about your evenings for a party of one." He began to follow his wife. "She won't like it, then I'm the one left to deal with the fallout."
"She shouldn't be interested in what I do." Ethan grumbled.
Tobias shot a frustrated glance filled with pity towards him.
"What?" Ethan demanded.
"Chris cares about you." Tobias reminded him. "Once she calls you her friend, there is no escaping her concern. You know this about her."
Ethan stopped in his tracks. It was strange that it didn't hurt as much anymore thinking about Chris caring about him as nothing more than a friend. After their tumultuous year when she first arrived at Edenbrook, then having to go through seeing her fall in love with Tobias; Ethan was surprised they had survived it all to end up friends.
Maybe he was ready to move on and see what could happen next.
*******************
He decided he was ready to have a significant other as he ate dinner alone. Going to the ballet without someone there to talk to had lost the allure it once held. He still enjoyed his solitude, especially with the friends he had somehow become stuck with. This evening though would have been perfect for someone special.
As he walked into the Boston Opera House's lobby, he bumped into Sophie.
"Excuse me--Ethan!" She smiled at him. "Hello."
"Sophie," he glanced around to see if she was with a date, "it's good to see you again."
"You too." She too tried to see if he was with someone. "Are you a fan of the theatre arts?"
"I am." He cleared his throat. "Are you here alone?"
"Yes," she rolled her eyes, "I was given the Mcculler's box in thanks for doing a rush job on a cake for one of their parties. I've been looking forward to this night for weeks but couldn't find anyone who wanted to see The Sleeping Beauty with me."
Ethan's lips curved some. "I've rarely found anyone who enjoys coming here as much as I do."
"Where are your seats?" She asked.
"The Mezzanine, center." He replied.
"I don't suppose you'd like to join me instead?" She held up the two tickets she'd been given. "If you're alone, that is."
"I'd love to."
**********************
Ethan spent most of the ballet studying Sophie. There was something about her that seemed to give a sense of peace that he'd never experienced with anyone else. She was completely still, yet relaxed in her seat. Her eyes followed the movements on the stage while a slight smile graced her lips.
He then took in the rest of her. Sophie's dark chestnut hair cascaded down her shoulders. The white dress she wore was flattering to her figure. His eyes drifted down to her hands loosely clasped in her lap.
She was, he noted, the exact opposite of Chris. He wondered if Tobias had done this on purpose. Unlike the very tall, pale skin, green eyed, red headed Scottish doctor he'd first fallen for, Sophie was of a more average height, caramel colored skin, topped off with a pair of dark brown eyes and hair.
She was striking in her beauty. He realized he hadn't really appreciated that fact the last couple of times he'd seen her. He suspected that getting over his former love had clouded his mind from taking in the lady beside him.
****************
Sophie could practically feel Ethan's eyes on her. It took all her strength to remain relaxed in her seat. She couldn't recall the last time a man had studied her so intently. Men hit on her, but no one actually looked at her the way he was doing right now.
She didn't know if it was those piercing blue eyes of his or the type of man he was, but her nerves were notched so high that if he remotely made a move toward her, she'd probably tackle him where he sat.
She thought he was handsome the night she met him. She found him almost cute dressed as a doctor. But something about him in his suit, sitting beside her in the dark, made him almost irresistible.
Veronica told her she needed to get out and date more. Maybe she was right. Sophie had not been with anyone for nearly a year in preparing for the move back to Boston. Most of the men who came into her bakery were already in a relationship. It was rare anyone single came in, much less asked to speak to her.
Since she spent most of her time in the back decorating and supervising, she never had a chance to flirt with any of the few male customers who came in for treats to take to their offices.
Maybe that was why Ethan's attention affected her so strongly. She'd been longing for a relationship and hadn't even known it.
******************
The lobby of the Boston Opera House...
"I was thinking about going to get something to eat." Sophie looked up at him. "Any chance you'd care to have a late dinner with me?"
Ethan hesitated.
Sophie immediately regretted asking him.
"I actually ate earlier." He glanced at his watch. "How--"
"No problem." She nervously tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear. "Thanks for sitting with me."
Sophie began to walk away, waving goodbye to him.
"Wait!" He caught up to her. "I was about to ask if you'd rather come to my place for dinner. It's late and most of the restaurants that your dress is meant for will be closing."
"Oh." She couldn't help but smile. "I don't want to put you to any trouble."
"No trouble at all. I enjoy cooking on my nights off." He offered his arm to her. "How did you get here?"
"Taxi." She placed her hand within the bend of his arm.
"Good. Then I can drive you home later."
*****************
When Ethan pulled up to his apartment building, Sophie's jaw dropped.
"You live here?"
"Yes, why?" He asked.
"Because I live here!" She pointed at the building. "Twelfth floor. Apartment B."
"I'm on the seventeenth." He told her.
Ethan couldn't believe he'd been living in the same building as Sophie all this time yet had never crossed paths with her.
Or had he and he simply hadn't noticed?
"You won't have to worry about driving me home now." She teased.
He smiled at her. "I can still walk you to your door."
Sophie laughed while getting out. "I'd like that."
Once in the elevator, she turned towards him. "Would you mind if I stopped at my place first and changed clothes?"
"No."
"These shoes have to go." She told him.
Sophie grasped his arm to balance as she slipped the painful high heels off.
Ethan watched her with a touch of amusement as she scooped up the pair with a soft curse.
"I won't be long." She told him while stepping out on her floor, casting a warm smile at him over her shoulder.
"Seventeen B." He reminded her.
"I'll be there." She promised.
*****************
Ethan quickly undressed the moment he shut his door. Tossing the finely made suit jacket and pants into his closet, he next tackled his shirt and tie. He settled on a light blue t-shirt to wear along with a pair of blue jeans. While pulling his pants on, he stumbled cursing into his kitchen to see what ingredients he had on hand for Sophie.
Her knock a couple of minutes later made him steady himself. He paused a moment realizing that he was actually excited about the prospect of getting to know her a little better.
He opened the door to find her casually leaning against the door frame. She'd put on a t-shirt like he had along with a pair of jeans. Sophie held up a bottle of wine with a hesitant smile.
"I wasn't certain what we were going to have, but I can say this is an excellent pinot grigio."
Ethan took the bottle from her, his brow furrowing with what to cook.
"Uh oh." She teased. "Is my choice of wine that bad?"
He looked up at her. "Not at all. I was thinking of what I could pair with it."
"Honestly Ethan," Sophie set her keys on his side table, "I'm up for anything. A simple ham sandwich would be great right now."
He snorted as he led her into his kitchen.
"I think I can do a little better than a ham sandwich."
"Really?" She settled comfortably on one of his bar stools. "Well now I am curious to see your cooking skills in action."
"I doubt they compare to yours." He remarked over his shoulder.
He began to gather the ingredients to make Tuscan chicken.
"Anything's better than mine."
Ethan' eyebrows raised in disbelief. "Sophie, you own a bakery and develop recipes for it on a daily basis."
She waved that off as if it was no big deal.
"The thing is," she confessed, "I can make desserts in my sleep, but savory dishes are where I mess up."
"Are you saying that you--"
"Can't cook." She admitted with a grin. "It baffles everyone I meet. Give me sugar and flour and I'm good, great even. Hand me that chicken and tomatoes and spinach and I'm going to destroy them as soon as I put them into a pan."
Ethan shook his head with a laugh. "I'm the opposite."
"You can't make desserts?"
"Not even pancakes." He explained about the meals he used to cook for him and his father. "Dad would just bring home ice cream or a box of cookies for us to have with our meals. He insisted I never pick up a bag of sugar "
Sophie laughed, feeling more at ease around him.
As the two talked, Ethan went through the prep work with ease. He uncorked the bottle of wine then led her into his living room. The pair sat down somewhat close, angling their bodies toward each other as they continued to talk about their lives.
He discovered that the thirty-three year old was highly intelligent, not just in the culinary world but in other aspects such as business and even history. Her ability to use humor here and there with her stories only added even more to her ability to hold his attention.
After spending so much time at Edenbrook, Ethan had forgotten that people outside of medicine could be a nice change of pace. He also found that she could easily grasp what he was talking about as he described what he did on the diagnostic team. Her questions were well thought out and actually made him pause a time or two to consider the answers.
When dinner was ready, they sat at his table, lights dimmed as they continued learning about the other.
It was, he decided, one of the best meals he'd had in a long time.
"Ethan, that was amazing." Sophie declared.
"Thank you." He got up to take their empty plates.
"I insist on doing the dishes." She took them out of his grasp. "And to make you dessert in thanks for cooking for me."
"There's no need." He followed her to his sink. "Like I told you, it was nice to cook for someone other than myself."
"If you ever need to do so again," she winked at him, "I won't be opposed to you calling me."
"Don't be surprised to hear from me often." He smiled at her, reaching over to finish up the dishes. "Go relax. I know you've been on your feet all day."
Sophie shook her head. "I feel reenergized. I haven't had a home cooked meal since I moved back to Boston. I sponged off Hugh and Veronica's meals once a week in New York along with having a set of restaurants around town to deliver my favorite comfort foods."
Sophie went into his pantry. Her eyes darted here and there as she went through the ingredients he had on hand. After another peek into his fridge, she set out everything to make a quick batch of sugar cookies.
"I see you found the raspberries I picked up earlier today." He teased.
Sophie blinked then remembered their conversation in her bakery.
"I hope I inspired such a wise decision." She quipped.
"You did." He picked up one of the cartons she'd set out. "Want me to clean these for you?"
She nodded while measuring her dry ingredients.
Ethan watched fascinated as she went through everything without having to check a recipe. She moved with a precision he'd only seen in the operating theater at Edenbrook.
"These won't be as pretty as my cookies at work." She explained while dropping spoonfuls on a cookie sheet. "But they'll still taste just as good.
"And what are the raspberries for?" He asked.
"Frosting of course." She smiled at him. "And I'm going to teach you how to make it."
"I believe I told you that sugar and I don't get along in the kitchen." He got up and came around the counter.
"And yet you have powdered sugar in your pantry." She teased.
"That was a mistake." Ethan explained. "The grocery store was out of granulated sugar and for some reason the delivery person assumed powdered could be substituted in its place."
Sophie laughed over the disgruntled expression on his face.
"I bet your coffee hasn't been the same since."
"It hasn't." He grumbled, smiling as he looked at her. "You can take that powdered sugar with you. After tonight, I never want to see it again."
"You'll want it after this lesson." She nudged him with her elbow. "Just imagine the look on your father's face when you present him with a cake or cookie with your homemade frosting."
"That's assuming I can make it or even the pretend cake and cookie you added to this scenario."
"Shh!" She playfully scolded. "You're ruining my future triumph."
"If I learn this," Ethan countered, "then you'll have to let me teach you something next time."
Sophie lowered her head, fighting a huge smile. "Next time, hmm?"
"You'll be learning how to make one of the dishes that you consider your comfort food." He told her.
"And when would this lesson happen?" She prodded, pretending to direct her attention to his food processor.
"I'm off tomorrow." Ethan stepped a little closer to her. "Or if next week at this same time would be better for you..."
"Either works for me." She added some more raspberries to the food processor. "I have tomorrow off too since I'll be working Saturday."
Ethan's voice held a touch of heat when he moved even closer to her.
"Then tomorrow it is."
Sophie could feel her heart race as she looked up at him. Her eyes fluttered closed the moment his lips brushed hers in a soft, tender kiss.
She sank into him the moment the kiss deepened. Her arms wound around his neck, fingers drifting into his hair as he molded her to his body.
The oven's buzzer broke them apart.
"That was a devious way to get out of your cooking lesson." She teased once she removed the cookies from the oven. "I'll have to remember to use it tomorrow night."
Ethan chuckled, moving behind her. He slipped his arms around her waist, placing slow unhurried kisses along her neck.
"We should work on the frosting." She bit back a moan when his hands began to wander.
"Doesn't the butter need to be room temperature?" He muttered against her ear.
"You're right." She turned in his arms, capturing his lips in a passionate kiss that left him moaning.
She ran her hands down the hard planes of his chest, a slight smile curving her lips.
"We have anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour to allow the butter time to reach room temperature."
"I think an hour would be best." He tugged her toward his couch. "Don't you?"
"I do." She gasped when he yanked her into his lap. "Maybe even longer."
********************
Two days later...
"What's this?" Tobias gestured to the plate of cookies.
"I did some cooking while off." Ethan told him.
Chris reached over to try one. She made a humming sound of delight.
"These are so good! I love raspberries."
Tobias reached for one. "I didn't know you baked, Ethan."
"I'm learning." He replied with a smirk.
Chris and Tobias shared a loaded glance.
"Is there someone giving you lessons?" Chris asked.
She couldn't help but be hopeful that a certain pastry chef was becoming a part of his life.
"There is." Ethan picked up the case files and smiled at the couple. "Expect a lot more treats like those these next few weeks."
Disclaimer: characters, plot points and dialogue (actual and paraphrased) belong to Pixelberry.
Authors note: so as mentioned this chapter deals with a a suicide attempt. Most of you do not live in Australia so it will be useless for me to mention our support services for this. I also know that some of you have been dealing with and I will presume others will know someone with depression so I will perfectly understand you not reading this installment. It is sad that people feel that they have to resort to this action as a way of escape but there are people and services out there that are there to help. We all have our struggles and it is our choices of how we deal with these struggles also.
😥😥😥😥😥😥😥
Ethan opens the door, knowing who is on the other side. Alan breathes a sigh of relief. “ I am relieved to see you are alright, son” said Alan as he entered Ethan’s unit.
“I have been busy, dad” said Ethan. He knew it was a lie as he had been avoiding him deliberately but it was the best lie he had.
“I know Ethan, I understand that but you still normally take my calls.”
It was then that Alan noticed Casey.
“I see I am interrupting .”
Casey insisted they were not. Alan could see Casey mouth something to Ethan which made him feel like he was indeed interrupting.
Ethan ensured Casey knew what was happening with the chicken and guided down to the living room.
“The truth is dad is that I have been avoiding you. When myself and Casey followed mum, it made me realize that part of the reason why I have kept a distance from you is that I could not understand why you still loved her, especially after what she did to us, to me.”
“I always knew you were angry son but I thought it was at her, not me.”
“I could never understand how you still loved her after what she did.
“We’ll love is a complicated emotion, I thought you knew that.”
Ethan internally winced, his own struggles with that emotion became all too apparent not to mention trying to figure out what his exact feelings were for Casey. He sees her leaving. He excuses himself and walks Casey out. I place a hand on her shoulder and say thank you. She leans in and we kiss. All the pent up emotion is poured into it. It is long and deep but finally we separate. She looks up at me.
“Ethan, what does this mean?”
“I don’t know, we will talk about this.”I do know what it means,even though I do not tell her. The reset is to be damned. I genuinely want to explore what we could be but my dad has ensured that it is not a discussion for tonight. I kiss her again, tenderly this time and I watch her as she walks down the street and drives past in her uber.
I head back upstairs to my unit.
“Are you sure I was not interrupting, Ethan?”
“No dad, the discussion we need have needs to continue.” Said Ethan as he punched the bridge of his nose.
“As I was saying before I saw Casey off, I at the time and now can not understand why you loved her. It was as if her leaving had little impact on you.”
Alan winced.
“Of course it did, I may have not outwardly showed much emotion, but I was hurt.”
“Why? How could you still love her? She just up and left with no warning?”
“I know it was without warning, Louise was always one to shy away from deep negative emotions so even though I do not know why and possibly never will know. Is it frustrating? Of course it is but I fell in love with and married Louise knowing this full well.” Alan sighed. “Love can not be switched off like a switch. Yes we married young but we had known each other before we even started dating. Those type of deep connections never leave us, Ethan.”
Ethan sat there deep in thought. He thought back on his own life. Tobias, Delores, Naveen, how deep the endings of those relationships had cut when they had ended or were on the cusp of in the case of Naveen. Then the thoughts turned to Casey and his cowardice. How he had done what Louise did, ran off without a word. Yes he came back eventually but he ran to rid himself of what he felt but it did not work, if anything as time had marched on, his feelings had only gotten stronger.
The timer went off and Ethan went to serve dinner.
“Another reason why I did not show much emotion when everything happened is because I needed to step up. I was the sole parent. A part of me felt it the easier option to bury the emotions deep and just get on with trying to parent the best I could. I realize now that was in detriment to you of course, the turmoil you had to be going through would not have been easy to deal with. I am sorry I was not there for you then, Ethan.”
“I do understand why you needed to carry on Dad. I was the one who closed myself off. It was me who has had the trust issues and feelings of unworthiness since then. How could I expect someone who was not a blood relative to stick around when my own mother saw fit not to.”
“I do not think you were the cause of her leaving, Ethan.” Said Alan.
“We will never know why Dad. For all we know it was me.”
Alan knew that Ethan was right but he did not believe it. He knew how wanted Ethan was, even before he was born.
“I don’t think I was ever fully angry at you dad, much of it was the situation and at Louise, you were just convenient to take my anger out on and not understanding where you were at too…”
“It is ok Ethan. I am glad we have had this chat.”
“Me too dad.”
Ethan told Alan about the day he and Casey followed Louise and how she had shop lifted. Alan was saddened to hear what had become of Louise. Alan then left. Ethan stayed up for a bit, thinking about the discussions that he had just had. It was long overdue he admitted and it felt freeing to finally not only understand where his dad was coming from but the feelings he went through at various break downs. His thoughts then turned to Casey. He replied to her message thanking her for letting her know that she was home safe. He was genuine in wanting to explore what they could be. He reflected on how easily he has trusted her in the beginning, especially with Naveen. How she was willing to be more than professionally cordial after his cowardice and what appeared to be a reciprocation of feelings. He had shot his main arguments for not pursuing anything in the foot a few ago when he admitted to her that she is just a resident but a peer. Then he realized he was scared. Scared of being hurt, also doing the hurting. He still felt that he did not deserve a chance but if Casey felt he did then he was going to take it.
The next day comes and I am at Mass Kenmore. I get where Casey is coming from, needing to feel in control of something but surely there had to be a better way. We kiss again. It was so we were not caught finding out where the senator was but there was no denying the emotion behind it. We get the senator to come to Edenbrook and I make the decision to hold out until after we have figured out what is making the senator unwell.
We figure it out and start treatment. I admit that there is a feeling of pride having one upped Tobias but once the treatment is done I know it means that Casey and I can have a long overdue discussion of our own. We are at a TV studio to do an interview. I can not help but marvel at her humbleness given the diagnosis was hers and then proud when she gets him all flustered and committing to some very progressive legislation. I then become mortified when I am asked if I am single. I state that I am not. Casey asked me about it after and I said what do people say, it’s complicated as I brush my lips against hers. We then head back to the hospital.
It had been a day, there had been stares from various staff and I had thankfully avoided Naveen. I make my way to the office and I see Casey’s laptop open. I look at the screen, my heart is in my throat and my stomach drops. I make my way to the senator’s room. My heart stops as I see the chaos inside. Casey tells me what happened. I assure her that I will fix this. I get staff to evacuate the floor, get Casey and her friend to cover off the vent whilst I call the CDC. The come and rig up the proper quarantine tent. Casey had the least exposure but we do not know what was deployed. We begin the search. It is tedious and so far coming up empty. Dr Trinh then states that she knows where the senator is hiding and we track him down. We get access to his aide. He is not much help but the FBI are able to share with us what they have ruled out which helps us. I make a mental note of the symptom progression and that enables us to hopefully buy us more time. I also come to a startling revelation. It is indeed love I feel for Casey and now I am extra motivated to ensure she is cured.
I am a mess of emotions so when Tobias Carrick comes walking up stating that we have the best of what Mass Kenmore has to offer as well I am shocked. Appreciative as well. They came at a great time too, we know that it was a maitotoxin. I stay with Casey, not caring what others may think. I tell her that I regret pushing her away and that I cared about her. The teams come up with an antidote and I administer it. I chat briefly with Tobias before he leaves, thanking him for helping us out. He said I would have done the same, he is right. A part of me is bitter that we have not reconciled, more time has passed and we have gotten older and perhaps wiser but that is not a chat for today.
A week later and it is time for the funerals of Danny and Bobby. I am relieved that there were not any more funerals from the attack but I am concerned about Casey. I had not factored in the mental anguish she is in. We had a fiery encounter earlier at the wake. I know that she needs to feel in control but there is a time and place. I end up staying and taking her home. I tell her that I am done hiding outside of work the feelings I have. We have an intense session and she stays with me for two weeks.
She discovered one of the letters I had written in the Amazon. I still could not bring myself to admit the truth, that I was in love with her. She was relieved that I did not regret the times I was intimate with her. What I did regret was my actions. She could sense I was holding back but she let it go.
Meanwhile Louise puts the final steps of her plan in motion. She has given up hope of Ethan reaching out. She now knows that he works at Edenbrook. It would seem logical just to go and see him there, apologize for the emotional damage she knows she has caused and walk away one last time like the coward she is but when you have gone without so you can save what little money you have to get the one last hit you know will end it all you do not think rationally.
She meets her dealer and makes the purchase. He admits that he is shocked at the size of the dose. Louise mentions nothing of her plan. It takes her a few days to work up the courage to take the heroin. Even at the end she is still a coward. Her hands are shaking.
“Fuck” she says as she misses a vein. She tries again more successfully this time. The hit is strong and for a brief moment she feels invincible. She roams about, not knowing exactly where she was until she collapses. She is not aware of what is happening until she is in hospital. She hears someone saying, “it is your mother” then briefly clear as day she sees Ethan before slipping again. She feels the compressions then feels an injection then she is taken away.
Ethan is thrown. After that day with Casey he consciously chose not to reach out, fearing she only wanted contact for financial reasons. Never did he expect for her to come into emergency in the throes of an overdose. Casey follows him. He did not want to burden her with his issues, even though she was aware of Louise. He needed to be alone. He was angry at her for being here, upset that she was an addict. He storms out of the on call room to the diagnostic team office. He knows that Louise will be here for at least three days as was procedure. Too many questions as to what to do. Does he send her to rehabilitation? Would that be a waste? His head is ready to explode. He calls Alan, letting him know what has happened. Alan is shocked and saddened to hear what had happened. When Alan had spoken to Louise she never mentioned what she had been upto all these years. He knew she was a hard worker bordering on workaholic before she had Ethan but drug addiction seemed unlikely. He was busy the next few days but did say he would come up.
The next morning Ethan spots Casey leaving Louise’s room. She says that the pain she is going through is genuine. I sense she is holding something back but I do not push her. I am still at a loss at what to do and the perfect distraction comes my way. The team is requested by my old friend Rodney to come up to his resort at Dagger Mountain. We leave for the mountain. The case is perplexing, on the surface it looks like altitude sickness but we are not that high up for that. We decide to take turns observing Paula. I go first then I join the rest of the team. I give an update to Casey and we head to my suite so we can discuss in private.
We touch on Louise, I state it is disconcerting and that I share personality traits with an addict. We then play a game of pretend and I pull Casey up asking if she was using the game to help her ignore what I know she is still going through post attack. She states it is what she wants to do and she is not using it as a means to escape. We kiss and I ask her to stay. The snow is a romantic backdrop and if I am here with the woman I want to be with then I am going to take that opportunity. We go multiple rounds. I am physically sated but still mentally awake. I think how lucky I am to have Casey in my arms, not just after the attack but after everything. How I wish to tell her I love her, surely her work on the team would quell some of the rumour mill? Ethan decides that it best to see how things go before going public. He goes to sleep happy, both blissfully unaware of the storm they will walk into the next day.
Authors note 2: ok we have reached where Tashland diverged from canon. My 14-20 rewrite of book 2 can be found on my masterlist here. There is a happy ending I promise.
Something Yellow
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan x Haley
Category: fluff
Word Count: 591
Premise: Ethan is wearing an unusual accessory :)
Tumblr media
"What was that?"
The question slipped out before Haley was able to think twice. Something weirdly yellow flashing from under the hem of Ethan's sleeve caught her eyes when she was about to exit the office.
"What was what?"
"On your wrist."
"Nothing." Ethan replied sternly as he pulled his sleeve over his wrist.
She quirked an eyebrow,
"I saw something on your wrist, and that did not look like the rolex you always wear."
"I have 12 different watches. I don't always wear that Rolex you're referring to."
"I know, but I also know your impeccable taste and I'm pretty sure if that was one of your luxury watches you wouldn't have tried to hide it so fiercely."
Despite his best efforts to remain calm and collected, the blush on his face was getting more and more severe by the second.
"Why don't you mind your own business rookie?"
"Oh come on, let me see! I won't tell anyone, I promise."
With the twinkle in her brown eyes, widened by curiosity, and her mischievous grin, Haley was looking far too adorable for him to resist.
"Your resistance is only making it worse you know."
"let it go!" Ethan grunted as He put the hand under investigation in his lab coat pocket and pinched the bridge of his nose with the other.
"come on! Please, let me see what is it that making the Dr. Ramsey blush like this!"
"I'm not blushing!" He scoffed.
"You look like a tomato!" She snorted, "A very... wise and respectable...tomato." She added carefully in response to Ethan glaring at her.
Haley took a tentative step forward, stretching her hand towards him, and then shot him one of those looks that always made him give in instantly, no matter what she was asking for. Whether she wanted a cop of coffee or for him to jump off the Empire State Building, he would've done it for her. This time was no exception.
"Oh my god!! Oh dear!" Haley's attempt to suppress her laughter as she saw the yellow accessory on Ethan's wrist was completely unsuccessful.
"Oh Christ!" Ethan rolled his eyes.
"Why are you wearing a SpongeBob SquarePants watch??"
"A 7 year old patient gave it to me as a present and I promised him to wear it all the time. Not that it's any of your business."
He responded in a quiet voice, however, not quiet enough to hide the vulnerability in his tone.
Haley looked at him in awe. Her lips were parted slightly, not being able to turn her emotions into words.
"Ethan, You are the sweetest."
Before letting her logic hold her back, Haley lovingly cupped his cheek. The stubble tickled her finger tips pleasantly, giving her butterflies.
"I just... care about my patients. He's been my patient for over a year and he's in the surgery right now."
"You're worried about him."
The older doctor averted his eyes and nodded silently.
Without another word, Haley wrapped him in tight hug. Ethan nuzzled her hair, inhaling the familiar orange blossom scent.
Their moment were interrupted by the knock on his door, making them spring apart.
"Dr. Ramsey, Adrian Cooper is out of surgery."
"Thank you Sara."
Haley looked at him with a tender smile,
"Wanna go see him?"
"Yeah let's go."
With that the attending bolted out of the door, leaving Haley behind.
"What a kind heart he has, and how hard he tries to look like an ass."
She shook her head with an amused smile and ran after him.
It Happened One Miami Night (1/?)
Series Premise: A work trip to Miami means finally accepting that some risks are worth taking. Or are they?
Fandom: Choices Book: Open Heart Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine) Rating/Category: Teen. Angsty Fluff Words: 1,045
Series Masterlist
A/N: The long awaited Miami series! I think this might be 3 or 4 parts, but I'm not sure yet. For Ethan's POV at the airport, read my old (and overly indulgent) fic: Out of Control.
Submission to @choicesmonthlychallenge March dialogue prompt: "We're running out of time."
Tumblr media
The ballgown had to go. There was no other choice. Besides, Cassie Valentine reasoned, she was going to a conference, not a white-tie gala.
She’d bought the dress on impulse when she saw it in a boutique on Newbury Street. It matched the heirloom necklace her parents gifted her when she graduated from medical school. But galas and the intern lifestyle didn’t exactly mix, and the dress had gathered dust in her closet until now.
Cassie stared at the clothes, shoes and other essentials she’d stuffed into the small carry-on case that lay unzipped and open atop her bed. Carefully adjusting the garment bag so as not to crush the beautiful midnight blue gown, she tucked the ends in and wondered if she could close and zip the bag without applying pressure.
They were likely flying coach, as that’s what most people did, which meant packing the bare minimum. Unfortunately, she had never learned the art of packing light and didn’t think Dr. Ramsey was patient enough to wait for her checked luggage to roll off the carousal.
He might just leave her at the airport to find her own way to the hotel right after giving her the patented Ramsey glare. The man was infuriatingly predictable like that.
Huffing in frustration, Cassie threw herself on the bed and stared at the ceiling. It was bad enough that she had to be at the airport in a few hours, but the worst was that she’d had an extraordinarily long shift with barely time to eat dinner.
Anyway, she consoled herself. She’d likely be stuck inside dark meeting rooms taking notes and playing assistant all weekend, not enjoying cocktails by the pool.
Dr. Ramsey hadn’t said anything about her accompanying him to receptions and parties that were par for the course at these conventions. As far as the medical community was concerned, she was a nobody.
Cassie was honest enough to admit she was ambivalent about this trip. Despite her bravado in front of Sienna and the “girl can dream” comment, spending time alone with Ethan Ramsey away from the hospital was not good for her resolution to stay away from him.
He was dangerous to her heart. Tall, dark, and handsome, he had laser-blue eyes that made her insides melt whenever he directed them her way. He was an attending and a world-famous diagnostician, while she was a lowly intern who still had trouble believing in herself.
Workplace romances were often treacherous for women, even more so when the man was her superior. That lesson had been ingrained in her brain from the moment she got her first job. Her father had taught her to spot the signs and avoid putting herself in a situation where the lines could be crossed.
They could never work, and it could ruin her career before she’d truly begun. If she thought otherwise, she was dreaming.
So, why did the impossibility of it all make her unbearably sad?
Feeling the long day catch up with her, she closed her eyes briefly. Just five minutes, she told herself, letting out a loud yawn. Five minutes to rest her busy brain, and then she’d finish getting her stuff ready for tomorrow.
She woke up hugging the sides of the carry-on and the sound of an alarm blaring in the quiet. She started to fling her arm to hit the snooze button, but her eyes snapped open.
Crap, crap, crap. She’d fallen asleep. What time was it?
Cassie grabbed her phone off the nightstand, blinked to clear sleep from her eyes and then yelped before hurriedly swinging her legs off the bed. She needed to haul ass or forever put up with Dr. Ramsey’s snide remarks about missing their flight.
An hour later, she ran down the terminal, the wheels of her carry-on case rattling behind her. She scanned gate numbers and sweated bullets as the overhead announcer warned that it was the last call for the flight to Miami.
Cassie skidded to a halt outside their gate, an apology hovering on her lips as Ethan took off his eyeglasses and checked his watch.
“Five more seconds, and I’d have boarded without you.”
She couldn’t tell from his expression if he was angry or just resigned at her lateness. His tone was entirely too casual for her to decide.
“I won’t happen again!” Cassie said, gulping oxygen and ignoring the stitch in her side. The mad dash across the airport caught up with her.
Ethan quirked one eyebrow. “You think I’ll be inviting you to medical conferences often, do you?”
It was such an on-brand response that Cassie couldn’t help but grin. “Fingers crossed?”
He rolled his eyes, but the wide, easy smile showed her he wasn’t offended by her sass. “Oh for goodness’ sake, let’s board already. We’re running out of time.”
He handed his boarding pass to the gate attendant and waited off to the side while Cassie did the same. Just before they entered the jetway, she absently glanced at the light snow falling on the tarmac outside.
“Sunshine and clear blue skies, here we come,” she murmured to herself before following him down the jetway.
Unwittingly, her eyes fell on his well-toned ass and thighs clad in dark jeans, and her throat became dry. Oh, boy!
He’s not for you, and this is a bad idea. Cassie repeated the words like a mantra as they neared the aircraft's open door and the flight attendants waiting to greet them.
Half an hour later, his cologne hit her senses, and she held her breath to stop herself from sniffing him. Instead, she turned away from his profile to watch the dark clouds outside the window as the plane left Boston behind.
This is madness. Stop it, she scolded herself as they companionably settled in for the long flight after a hearty breakfast. She nervously fiddled with the in-flight entertainment screen while ignoring Ethan, who was too engrossed in his book to pay her any attention.
His nearness was like a drug, and she was growing addicted. If she was going to leave Miami with her heart intact, she would have to resist the temptation. It was for the best. Some things really were not worth the risk.
im thinking a mix of 4 and 8 from the protective prompts for jensen and casey (platonic ofc). depending on how you go w it, i could also see it as a bonding moment for jensen and tobias if jensen was the one helping casey, but please take it any way you want!!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
She had to decide what to do soon. After all, Casey never spent much time in the kitchen. Hitting 5.0 minutes on the microwave was the extent of her culinary skills, and as the designated cook in the apartment, Jensen knew that. She had another three, four minutes tops before he realized she was keeping tabs on him. A minute or two more before he would find it irritating. Unfortunately, it was the only room in their tiny apartment where she could keep an eye on him, and as she had come to know him better, he had come to know her, too. And he should know she wouldn't leave him alone when he was like this.
A quick glance at her phone on the counter confirmed that Bryce still hadn’t replied. He was in surgery most of the day, but perhaps he could offer some clue of what happened, then maybe... just maybe she’d know what to do. She startled a bit when she heard him shift on their worn, leather sofa... his first movement since arriving home. But that’s all he did, not a word nor a single gesture as he sat in the dark, arms crossed protectively in front of his chest.
Finally, her phone vibrated, and she grabbed it before he heard. Two words, followed by three dots. Bryce had more to say, but she already had all the information she needed.
His mom...
Casey felt her temper rising. She didn’t know much about the woman, but anything she had heard, she didn’t like. Still, Jensen was protective of her, so like Bryce, Casey often bit her tongue when the topic was broached. A second text came in.
... he sent her a present for her birthday, and she returned it unopened. It arrived at work just before he left today. I’ll be out in a few hours, but if you could...
...I’ve got it.
She replied. She let out a silent sigh. Did she have it? She knew how she’d want to be comforted if something this awful happened to her. She would know how to comfort Bryce or her other friends, but Jensen was different, and while they had been growing closer, she wished she had a manual at times like this.
Her head turned toward his bedroom, the door wide open and his bed still unmade. In the center of a tangle of sheets and blankets sat the stuffed raccoon that Bryce – his definitely not boyfriend Bryce – had won for him after a recent trip to the fair. Casey named him Rocky Raccoon, and Jensen never fought her, so Rocky it remained. Working on instinct alone, she retrieved the plush animal and silently marched back to the living room. Coming to a stop right behind Jensen on the couch.
“Hey,” she spoke softly.
Jensen let out a long breath, taking his time before replying.
“Hey.”
“I know you’re having a rough day...” she started.
“What gave it away?” he said without intonation.
“You came home while I was finishing my workout, and you never once made fun of my ‘Flashdance’ attire.”
“Hmmm,” he mumbled. “Dead giveaway.”
Without a word, she stepped closer and placed her hand lovingly on his shoulder as her other hand reached around and placed Rocky Raccoon gently on his lap.
“If you want me to go away, I will. But if you want me to stay, I’ll just sit here. You don’t have to say a thing... not to Rocky or me.”
The darkness surrounding him didn’t lift; they both knew that would take some time. But Jensen felt about an ounce lighter, and right now, that was a good start.
“Sure, you can sit here."
Casey was quickly at his side. Not too close, and no touching. She fought every fiber in her being that longed to hold him, tell him how wonderful he was, and that he'd be OK. But this wasn’t about her... it was about him. So she just sat to let him know she was there.
About twenty minutes had passed before Jensen spoke, a text from Bryce breaking him from his spell.
“Bryce will be here in about an hour,” he spoke.
“OK.”
“Do you know what I'd like before he arrives?”
The corner of Casey’s lip raised ever so slightly. “The rocky road ice cream in the fridge? Two spoons?”
Jensen didn’t smile in response, but she could see the tension in his jaw loosen.
“Two spoons,” he replied.
When Bryce arrived, an empty container was on the table with two spoons resting inside. Rocky was nestled under Jensen’s arm, and any benefit Casey received from the workout before was shot to hell.... but she didn't mind. Bryce leaned over and whispered in her ear.
“I’ve got this from here.”
She silently stepped up and headed to her room. Bryce had slid into the space she held for him, but just before she closed her bedroom door, Jensen called out.
“Case.”
“Yeah?”
“Thanks.”
With a soft smile, she closed the door, knowing her friend was in good hands. It would take some time, but he would be all right.
Intern Year
Ethan Ramsey walked into the secluded new wing of the hospital, where he kept one of his biggest secrets under covers. From the far end of the corridor, he could see his patient X struggling to put something on the doorway.
"Naveen," his deep baritone voice cut through the silence.
"Oh didn't see you there," the older doctor replied.
"What are you upto?"
"You know, just trying to get some holiday cheer in here. It gets terribly lonely sometimes," Naveen smiled but Ethan could see the sadness behind his brown orbs.
Ethan looked around the rather small hospital room. 'Holiday Cheer' in forms of red, green and golden had taken over quite well.
"Wow, did you do all this by yourself?"
"Well, I have had some help."
Ethan then looked down at the green bunch in his hand as realisation dawned upon him.
"Mistletoe? Really Naveen?" he pinched the bridge of his nose. "You very well know me and Dr. Bose are the only people who come through these doors."
"Hey don't shout at an old-sick man trying to decorate for Christmas. And also, I have seen the way you look at her. Why beat…" Naveen doubled down coughing, cutting off his own words.
Ethan catches hold of him helping him onto the bed, bringing the oxygen mask near his face.
"Oh my God!" Meera exclaimed. "How did this happen? We were just decorating for Christmas sometime back!"
"I think we are past the point of hows and whys," Ethan's voice stern and cold. "Please prepare a shot of Nitroglycerine and I need a full workup to know what went wrong."
"Yes, doctor," Meera said timidly before scurrying off to get to work.
Both the doctors worked in sync putting all they had in them to get their patient to stabilize. While reaching for the needles Meera's foot collided with something. She looked down to see the mistletoe, forgotten and abandoned on the floor. Confused and slightly hopeful she looked upto her mentor, only to find him barking another order at her. She gulped down her emotions, shoving the mistletoe under the bed, into the darkness where it belongs.
Second Year
The sound of an ongoing party welcomed Ethan as he parked his car opposite the brownstone building. He turned off the ignition and got out, looking around to make sure his presence remained as discreet as possible.
He shot a silent text, waiting on the doorstep.
"Hi!" his favourite voice in the entire world greeted him.
He looked up to see Meera, clad in a red and green holiday pajama. It astonished him that she could wear the most ridiculous of outfits and even then she'll always remain the most beautiful woman he has ever laid his eyes on.
"Hey, you look …," he trailed off searching his brain for the perfect word, "... nice."
Meera chuckled, such a vast vocabulary and that's what he finds to compliment her.
"You know you are not supposed to be here right? My roommates are just upstairs."
"I know. But I just wanted to see you and…," he hands her a wrapped package.
"Oh my God! Is this a Christmas present from the great Ethan Ramsey?!" Meera teased.
"Okay, I regret it already."
"Don't worry babe, this is a step in the right direction," Meera assured.
"Oh! What a lovely couple!" Mrs. Burton, Meera's elderly neighbour exclaimed. "and look," she pointed upwards, "a mistletoe! Hope you kids can keep up with Christmas traditions."
The couple put on polite smiles as Mrs. Burton made her way up the stairs and moved out of earshot.
"So, what do you say Ramsey? You up for this?" Meera winked.
"Come here," Ethan leaned in close, cupping Meera's face in his hand, lips merely a breath away, when… "Meera! Are you done there? We are about to start the movie," the voice of her roomate along with heavy footsteps echoed around the stairwell.
"I'm sorry," Meera mouthed before breaking away from his embrace and closing the door shut. She heaved a sigh of relief before shouting, "yes I'm almost there."
"Who was it?"
"Just an Amazon package."
As the sounds of Meera and her roommate's conversation faded away, Ethan Ramsey couldn't help but smile to himself. He felt like a teenager all over again with this secret relationship. No, he felt younger, livelier when he was with Meera.
He looked back one last time before making his way back to his car when he noticed the mistletoe on the ground. Must've fallen down when Meera hurriedly shut the door he thought, picking it up and putting it inside his coat right over his heart where it belonged.
Third Year
"Are you almost done with it?' Sarah shouts at Marlene as she holds onto the stool Marlene is currently standing upon trying her best to stick the mistletoe onto the ceiling.
"Will you just be patient? This has to go perfectly!" Marlene says climbing down and standing back to admire her handiwork.
"Girl, you are way too invested in this."
"Duh! Did you even see their kiss at the hopeful hearts gala?! It was to die for! And since then there wasn't even an ounce of PDA between them, like how is that even possible? So excuse me if I try to recreate it with a little Christmas cheer." Marlene explained breathlessly.
"Geez!" Sarah retorted.
"Okay, Marc! Is everything going according to plan? Is the intel we collected earlier still true?"
"Absolutely!" another nurse joined the conversation. "As per our plan Dr. Bose is scheduled to pick up labs for patient 1973 in about seven minutes, whereas Dr. Ramsey will be done with his consult in room 6204 around the same time. Therefore according to my calculation they are supposed to cross path in about 4 minutes and 17 seconds right here," Marc looks up mischievously at the mistletoe.
"Amazing!" Marlene claps him in the back. "Okay everyone, I want all of you in your respective positions, cameras in hand. But pretend to be busy, this is Ramsey we are talking about if he smells even something in the slightest, this can take a disastrous turn."
The nurses make themselves busy, keeping an eye on the lookout for Edenbrook's most famous couple.
In about a little over three minutes Ethan Ramsey marches down the corridor, eyes glued to a patient chart. Meera Bose on the other hand is looking down at her phone making her way from the opposite direction. Their eyes lay on each other, exchanging a small smile they quicken their pace to reach each other faster. Until they walk right into the trap.
"Look at the holiday miracle!" Marlene exclaims, looking at the mistletoe, "I hope you both can bring in a little Christmas cheer, for us working on this glorious holiday." She bats her eyes.
"Absolutely not!" Ethan declares and Meera finds herself too surprised to talk.
"Come on Dr. Ramsey for the Christmas spirit!" one of the nurses shouted.
"Yes!"
"You have to!"
"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!"
More and more nurses join in.
Ethan looks at Meera, half helpless and half confused.
"Okay! Everyone stop!" Ethan's voice changing to Dr. Terminator's. "What is wrong with you people? This is a hospital!"
"What he means to say is," Meera says. "We are happy to get into the Christmas spirit!"
The nurses start clapping, a ripple of excitement going among them.
"Seriously Meera?" Ethan rolls his eyes.
Meera reaches for his hands, "it's okay babe, it's just a kiss."
Shaking his head Ethan leans in determined to just place a quick peck and then admonish the nursing staff for inappropriate workplace behaviour. But when Meera met him halfway, he was in for a surprise. Meera went deep, cupping his face and pulling him close until she was out of breath. They break apart to the cheers of the nurses.
"Meera! What the hell?" he said in a whisper, face almost scarlet.
"We have to give people what they want," she winked.
Ethan cleared his throat when the cheers died down. "Well… that's enough holiday cheer for one day, now get back to work everyone." With that he turned on his heels and made his way out.
"You heard the man," Meera said. "Get back to work people!"
