Yesterday I restored an old book(RAMAYANA), written by Rajagopalachari, published in 1957. It belonged to my grand father.
I found this book in his old card-board suitcase, and it was in a rather bad shape, no original binding was found, there was no spine on the book at all and the stitching was slanting badly, and needed to be completely resewn.
Bound in fine brown leather attached to hard card-boards, and the paper was stitched using waxed linen cords.
Absolutely enjoyed restoring this old beauty.

They say to never judge a book by its cover... but that’s exactly what I’m doing with this blog. Because before we had smartphones and all the world’s knowledge and input constantly at our fingertips, what else did we have? 📚 We had book covers, write-ups on inside flaps, snippets on back covers, suggestion from the artwork, and maybe a few quotes from other authors.

If we had the forethought, we could read reviews in newspapers or online via a dial-up connection and march into the bookstores prepared. 🧚🏻♀️🧚🏻♀️ But for me the real magic was found in spontaneity; in unplanned trips where I’d spend a couple of hours rummaging around, reviewing covers, relying only on what I had in front of me.

I found Humming Bird by Eleanor Farjeon at the library’s annual book-sale this past weekend. Of any book, it gives me the least information: a gold hummingbird on the front, a worn and fading spine, some spots and stains, a musty smell hinting it’s been around a while, a 1936 copyright confirming it’s been around a while, and a list of other books by the author. 🌻

What am I expecting? I can’t really say. I do know Farjeon’s a children’s author, but the book is nearly 300 pages so I am expecting a higher level of sophistication than The Foot Book. Why read an old book I have no clue about? Because stories are meant to be read, even the old ones.
