Mr. Gar, a Fount of Masculinity and the Step Dad that Stepped Up

Mr. Gar is introduced as this stoic, gruff picture of manliness. The most promising up-and-coming heroes at the Plaza, Rad and Enid, work and train directly under him. Most Boxmore threats are small enough that Mr. Gar trusts Rad and Enid to handle things but when the stakes get a little too high, he parts the clouds themselves and enters the fray. He's a slightly mysterious, larger than life figure; the pinnacle of role models and exactly who K.O. aspires to be when he's older.

At the start of the series, viewers only see the stoic facade crack around Carol. He becomes an anxious, tongue-tied wreck. Its an achievement if he's able to string together anything close to a coherent sentence around her. The first hints viewers get about their history together are the Silver Spark portrait on Mr. Gar's desk and the sub sandwich flashbacks. Everyone is aware of how he feels about Carol and even ship them together to some degree. Carol wants to talk to him and reconnect, even when she has to take the initiative in general conversations. So, the question becomes what's actually stopping Mr. Gar here?

In the POINT flashbacks, the young Mr. Gar is the anxious, meek, tongue-tied luchador-themed hero El Bow. El Bow was very much a capable and talented hero. He was one of three hand-picked junior candidates to join the prestigious hero team POINT. Before that, he was known and highly respected for his lucha libre, as revealed and fangirled over by Punching Judy. Though these parts of his character are dramatically overshadowed by his seeming lack of confidence and self-esteem. The handful of screen time El Bow has are usually centered on how hard he's crushing on his coworker Silver Spark. He's so focused on drumming up the courage to confess his feelings that it takes a comment from Rippy for him to clock how obvious Silver and Laserblast are. Laser made a move the minute he met Silver. El Bow knew her long enough to develop a rapport and become close friends, but he was waiting for the 'perfect moment' to say something.

Because Laser and Silver were getting more serious, El Bow felt a 'now or never' compulsion to confess. During the three-man mission to discover what was going on with the donut shop, El Bow was focused on confessing over everything else. Seeing Laser flirt with Silver was agony. It was the final pin pull on the metaphorical grenade. The confession had to be now. El Bow still wasn't quite ready, hence the hemming and hawwing and stumbling over his words, but he finally had the momentum to follow through. He 'distracts' Silver long enough that she can't reach Laser in time. The donut shop gets sucked into a black hole. Laser is presumably dead. Silver and the entirety of POINT wrongfully blame El Bow for the tragic event, his friends ice him out, and he's unceremoniously dismissed from his position.

Another dimension to El Bow is his cultural identity as a masked wrestler. A luchador is traditionally part of an established family stable and has a legacy attached to their mask along with their title. Lucha libre typically features teams of three, too. In El Bow's case, his stand-in for the classic lucha team were Silver and Rippy. They're as much extended family as they are friends and teammates. When El Bow loses his mask, its a dramatic visual signifier for the death of both his identity and former life. That's why Mr. Gar deliberately refuses to go by that previous title and refers to it as something separate or other. He had to completely rebuild himself as well as the parts, pieces, and meaning of his life from the ground up.

Mr. Gar has a literal wanderer phase of his life where he walks aimlessly long enough his clothes get tattered and his hair grows into a long, unruly mass. He's lost and confused, but always stops along the way to help people in need. Even without POINT or El Bow, he became a hero because of an earnest desire to help others and stop bad guys. El Bow was just a moniker. The essence of who he was is still there; the new journey is figuring out what to do now and who he wants to become. Then Mr. Gar meets the President of the Universe and is assigned a new mission that aligns better with who he is and what he can do: protect the glorb tree and build a supply chain store for heroes.

The President of the Universe could be seen as a fun, campy stand-in for a person finding newfound purpose through religion. Or someone reconnecting with their spirituality in general. Sometimes, the parables, teaching, and morals connected to a religious practice or diving more into philosophy give a person that feels lost and directionless a good foundation for introspection. It can be a line thrown out to sea that guides them back to shore. Its a starting line that gives them the means to start exploring and learning about the more abstract part of 'what is life' that leads to growth, change, and hopefully, self improvement. Mr. Gar building the Plaza leads to him becoming the hero and legend of Mr. Gar. He's not attached to POINT. He lives and sustains a separate venture that promotes a more independent, self-discovery approach towards being a hero. There aren't concrete benchmarks or specific guidelines, but Mr. Gar gladly gives advice and presents a great space to help somebody figure out what direction works for them.

Enid in particular benefits from how much more open training at the Bodega is vs the more structured training and education at POINT. There's three particular classifications a POINT Prep student could be sorted into: logic, strength, or charisma. While the different areas overlap, there's still pressure to conform to titles like 'the smart one' or 'the charismatic one.' The charisma students, ala Elodie, are the most likely to be popular and well liked. In short, POINT Prep promotes and curates specific visions of what a hero should be like. With Mr. Gar, he pinpointed Enid and Rad's respective strengths and encourages their next moves or training based on what makes sense for them individually vs a strict, one-size-fits-few curriculum. Enid ultimately chooses Gar's Bodega over POINT Prep because his more free-form approach as a mentor is a better fit for her. She's still trying to figure out what kind of hero she is and wants to be. As it was, POINT Prep is a better match for someone that already knows who they are and what their ultimate goals are (hence why Elodie thrived in that environment).

While Mr. Gar eventually recreated himself, he still bottled up and buried El Bow, Laserblast, and POINT. He refuses to confront what happened and as a result, has stilted, awkward run-ins with Carol. Talking to Carol in a deeper, more meaningful way than "How are you?" means he has to unpack his guilt over Laserblast's demise. Carol has processed what happened, realized that if she had run in she might have 'died' along with Laser, and that she lost an important friendship. She learned to live with what happened, in large part to be an aware and active parent for K.O., and is trying to live as full and satisfying a life she can now. Yes Mr. Gar built the Bodega and became an impressive, respected figure in his own right, but part of him is stuck in the past on that horrible night.

In his mind, he might as well be the one that killed Laser instead of the black hole. The angry, upset Carol in the constantly rewound tape of his mind's eye is more tangible and immediate than Carol in reality. Mr. Gar is so scared that if he actually tries to talk to her, it would be an instant means to transport him back to that painful transition period between losing El Bow and who Mr. Gar is now. Its a weird balance: the tragedy rules his life to the point that it makes it difficult for Mr. Gar to be vulnerable but admitting it happened would supposedly shatter what peace and status quo Mr. Gar managed to achieve otherwise.

Traditionally, men are encouraged to ignore and bury trauma. Its presented as a simple obstacle that can be overcome with enough will power. Instead of the overcome by willpower tack, the dramatic slow-mo sandwich drop and ensuing story beat build towards similar 'talk things out' deconstruction that toons like Steven Universe regularly visit. One particular episode depicts Mr. Gar cowering at the sight of a younger Carol on a giant flying sub. It shows that Mr. Gar's attempts to ignore that particular event and the heavy emotions around it have been ineffective. He's a lot more self-confident and actualized. He can handle rude customers, tough bad guys, and most things that come his way, but brute force will not overcome trauma. Its something that haunts him like a ghost. Posing this as his greatest fear helps paint just how overwhelming trauma can be if not the importance of recognizing its effects on mental and emotional health period.

When Mr. Gar finally does talk to Carol, it's like opening a pressure valve. Its a release. Carol reassures him that he's not responsible for what happened with Laser and that she's sorry for blaming him. Hearing someone say this out loud, even if Mr. Gar had come to that conclusion himself, makes this concrete. Now he fully recognizes that the Carol in his mind is a projection; nowhere close to the present-day reality of the person he's talking to. After they finally talk, they start to reconcile, grow close again, and even start dating.

Their romance is a more in-the-background slow burn with the exception of the cute picnic date, but its rewarding to see play out. If anything, it shows that Mr. Gar is working through his trauma to the point that he has more meaningful and deep conversations with Carol. He trusts her enough to fully let his guard down and honestly let her in. Granted, it'd be nice to see a more detailed conversation between them about her still working for POINT in secret. Though, its not too much of a stretch that they built a strong enough foundation to work through that and fully talk things out later.

After working at the Bodega for awhile and Mr. Gar dating his mom, K.O. openly admits to Mr. Gar that he sees him as a father figure. At first, Mr. Gar looks baffled, but he ultimately decides to fill this role as best he can. Employing K.O. started as a favor to Carol. Through his general interactions and one-on-one time with the kid, he comes to care about him as much as his other pupils Rad and Enid. He recognizes the gravity of the role K.O. is asking him to fill. As far as they both know, K.O.'s bio-dad is dead, Carol's immediate friends and clients are other moms and older women, and Mr. Gar's pupils/adoptive family are pretty much K.O.'s older siblings anyway. K.O. is expressing his need for an older male role model; not just the ambiguous figure of Chip Damage he only ever gets cues from through TV appearances and action figures.

Mr. Gar is right there. He's reliable, he's a powerful hero, he's an enthusiastically Carol-approved symbol of masculinity. He's the picture of what K.O. wants to be like. The montage revealing that Mr. Gar and Carol started dating features happy, domestic scenes with Mr. Gar filling the role of 'dad' well enough that K.O. reflects on that with a smile. That particular scene with K.O. and Mr. Gar on the Bodega roof for a stake-out is the result most blended families hope for when a new parent enters the scene. The new parent, in this case Mr. Gar, has organically meshed with the existing family and carved out a spot that's unanimously accepted.

Considering how Mr. Gar is written and presented, he's an example of a positive masculine role model. He's tough, he's stern, and he kicks ass, but he's also patient and learning how important it is to be open and vulnerable. In the very last episode, its a mark of how much of an impact Mr. Gar had when an adult K.O. not only takes over the Bodega, but also his spot for an aerial attack from the clouds.

How to Make Tarot Spreads

Learn how to make your own tarot spread. This is based on my personal practice so feel free to customize it as needed!

I've written the steps out in a linear manner but they are not numbered. The reason for this is because the process itself is rarely linear (for me) and I tend to bounce between steps, changing things as I go until I've got the finished product.

On to the creation process!!

Think about a life event that you wish to have guidance on (or wished to have guidance on at the time). Or perhaps a situation that left you with many burning questions time and time again. These will be your main topic for the tarot spread.

You can also choose a topic that's easier and less hard-hitting like a new season, natural phenomenon, or celestial cycle (ie. the new moon in Leo, Taurus season approaching, the last frost, etc.) You can also pull from pop culture to create a tarot spread.

Pick a number, something manageable. I usually go between 3 and 7 cards, personally. Sometimes the number of cards you use will also be relevant to your spread if you hold certain beliefs about numbers. If this is the case then feel free to leverage this when creating cards!

Think about questions that the situation left you with or things you wished you'd thought about while going through the event. You'll use these to create prompts for the cards.

Choose a pattern, aka how your cards will lay once they've been pulled. This is the "spread".

Put it all together and you've got a spread! You can choose a title or not, I usually choose the title somewhere within the creation process as they just sorta come to me naturally. Sometimes the title comes first and I work from there.

Example:

Topic: I've been dealing with a breakup recently so that will be my topic for the spread. I'll walk you through my process.

Questions someone has when going through heartbreak are things like: What went wrong? Is this for the best? What did I do wrong? What did I do right? When will I feel ok again? What do I do now? Etc.

Pulling the Cards: Of course, you can choose the tried and true shuffle-and-pull method of pulling cards, but you can also get more creative with it.

I've chosen a "sandwich" method, where you shuffle the deck and find a specific card, then you pull out the card directly in front of and behind the card in question.

What do I think of when I think of tarot and breakups? The three of swords, a card notorious for being about heartbreak.

So, we'll look for the 3 of swords and pull out the card in front of and behind it. I will shuffle again and pull the 3rd card from wherever in the deck it calls to me.

Pattern: I want to keep with the theme of the 3 of swords so I plan on the 3 cards being pulled laying above and slightly angled, similar to the look of the original 3 of swords.

Prompts: Questions someone may have when going through heartbreak are things like, What went wrong? Is this for the best? What did I do wrong? What did I do right? When will I feel ok again? What do I do now? Etc.

Using these questions and emotions, I can come up with the card prompts.

Hope stopped as she rounded the corner. She’d finally shaken whatever was behind her. She’d need to fill in Alaric once she got back to the boarding house. “Are you ok?” Looking up Hope realised that she’d stopped outside of a restaurant. A sign outside said ‘Now open until eleven.’

“Fine thank you.” She said as you stepped off the wooden decking area with a tray of dirty dishes still in your hands.

“Are you sure? You looked like you were hurrying. You can come inside if you need to?” You offered. Hope smiled at that and nodded.

“Are you still making food?” She asked. You frowned and glanced back.

“Well, the chef is packing up. He doesn’t like that the new owners are making us stay open late. But I know there’s a sandwich in the back. It’s fresh. Well from this afternoon.” You smiled when Hope nodded and led the way inside. A few people were sitting at tables around the room and through a small door at the back, as you went through to the kitchen, Hope could see a man in chef’s whites arguing with someone. You hurried back with a sandwich and a side salad wrapped in clingfilm. Hope took it and happily tucked in. She hadn’t eaten anything all day.

“You know they want us to stay open till midnight on Halloween. Chef’s pretty mad about it.” You muttered. You had gestured over your shoulder as you spoke and Hope’s eyes flicked to the argument going on.

“Maybe they’ll change their mind?” She offered. You shrugged and waved off the cash she tried to hand you. “On the house.”

Hope dropped by often after that. Always in the evening. She’d have something to eat and wait while you closed up and walked you home. Eventually, the kitchen would set aside a dinner for her even if they had to leave early. Your co-workers started to make jokes about Hope being a ghost or a vampire. She only ever showed up at night.

"There’s a rumour going around that you’re a vampire." You said as you closed up and found her waiting for you.

“Oh yeah? Are you scared of vampires?” She said playfully.

“Given that they’re not real. I don’t think they’re scary at all.” Your answer seemed to amuse her as you reached your home and she waved you off saying she had to get back home.

The week before Halloween Chef was arguing with the manager. It was such a rowdy argument that everyone was sent home. You started walking home alone, in the dark, wondering if Hope would drop by. As you turned the corner something collided with you.

You screamed as something with black eyes, veins across its face and pointed teeth which caught the light of a street lamp pinned you down. It was all you could do to keep the snapping teeth at bay. Suddenly, just as your arms started to buckle, they flew into the air. Scrambling to your feet you froze. It was a man. One of the people who worked for chef. He was growling at Hope. She was crouched under a street lamp. Her eyes glowing and her teeth bared. You stared at her, unable to look away while your feet remained glued in place.

When she chased the other vampire away she turned to you. Finally, able to move you stumbled backwards.

“(Y/N).” Hope said softly.

“I have to go.” You said quickly and ran the rest of the way home. Hope’s eyes closed and tears dribbled down her cheeks as she listened to the panicked way your heart pounded as you made your way home.

The reason why I enjoy OK KO more than TOH is because OK KO presents itself as a teehee funny haha cartoon with some mystery elements and plot right in the first 5 episodes of the show - but even the plot stuff isn't treated with any kind of seriousness. There's never a sudden tone shift when the important story bits come on screen - the tone is consistent from beginning to end. OK KO knows what it wants to be and it doesn't waver from it. Even when it's talking about an important characters death, it doesn't really treat this topic with any kind of severity - this event is literally called "The Sandwich Incident"

But with TOH it starts off as a funny little haha cartoon about a girl having adventures in a child friendly equivalent of Hell - up until the last bit of season one when the tone of the story changes forever. Suddenly, it introduces the plot and expects you to take it very seriously - like it's got something important to say. Which it doesn't lol. Because if it actually cared about saying something important, then it would have introduced the plot right at the beginning of the season.

[Belos doesnt need to introduce himself to Luz right at the start of the show, but he does need to be aware of her and actively impede her progress using other characters like Lilith and Hunter as extensions of himself. But the guy is pretty much a phantom up until the end of season 1.]

An Electrifying Surprise - Shiny Pawmi and Shinx

Hello trainers! I’ve been busy at work researching but I have a great story for you today! I decided to go shiny hunting for Pawmi. I’ve wanted one for a while and have waited patiently for a breakout of Pawmi to occur. The problem is, I’ve been waiting for months now… and no breakout.

I decided to go to a place where I’ve seen a lot of Pawmi before, specifically South Province Area 3. Even just around the Pokemon Center there, I’d seen a few congregate. I figured if I could get a bunch to appear over the span of 30 minutes… surely one would be shiny! So I set up my picnic table and it was sandwich time! 🥪

Here’s my recipe to catch a shiny Pawmi!

Save first!!

One serving of cucumber

One serving of pickles

Three servings of yellow peppers

Any two herba mystica 🌿 but not sweet and sour together

What I had forgotten was that this area was also home to a lot of Shinx. Knowing that any electric type shiny could be attracted to the power of the sandwich, I kept my eyes open for both yellow and red.

I found Shinx first! It made sense because the population of Shinx is much higher than Pawmi in this area. But my rule of thumb is that any shiny is a WIN. So regardless I made sure to catch it and save, even though it was not my target Pokémon. You might have different rules for your hunts and that’s ok! Just make sure you’re using your herba mystica wisely.

Another tule I have for myself is that I always finish out the duration of a hunt. Are too many shinies ever a bad thing? Not in my line of work! I also know many trainers who would appreciate my efforts, so onward the hunt goes…

At this point I’m starting to feel skeptical that this is a good place to hunt for shiny Pawmi but then my Mabostiff followed a family of Pawmi and I saw a streak of red! It was shiny Pawmi! Trainers, my Mabostiff isn’t shiny as you can see from the picture, and I haven’t even come up with a proper name for him, but he has been so loyal and wonderful during my hunts. ❣️ It’s important to appreciate the regular Pokémon who help us in our endeavors. What should I name my loyal Mabostiff? Leave suggestions in the comments!

Two shinies in one hunt? That’s extremely lucky! How do I achieve this? First, I do have my shiny charm now. It really does help. Second, I make sure I have a Let’s Go Pokémon out with me as I hunt through the area (today it was Mabostiff). Your Pokémon needs to KO 60 Pokémon to up your odds. Then, move quickly about the area to make sure you’re getting eyes on as many Pokémon as possible!

I liked these shinies so much and my wife saw my progress and made it known that she loves shiny Shinx so I decided to repeat the hunt (for science)! The second time around I only encountered one shiny Shinx so luck was truly on my side during my first hunt. I like these free form shiny hunts - I think I’m going to do more of them. In fact… I saw a Litleo on the ledge and I think Shinx would love another lion Pokémon to play with. Until next time, stay shiny! ✨

Southern Blend

The chirping cicadas and the madre de cacao blooms are pretty and pretty curious, too.

Finally able to squeeze in a trip somewhere near Tagaytay yesterday. Since mother dragon's hometown is in Indang, I guess, every time I pass by Emilio Aguinaldo Highway, I feel like I'm coming home to her, too. Never mind the traffic caused by yet another road repair. This time around, I'm a bit wiser and a bit grown up, too.

Dad has been rarely home since he's going to and from ina's house; so, I asked him to drive me. We had brunch in Cafe Agapita because I need to take meds and missed the pancake sandwich which is my favorite quick meal for road trips especially during weekends. I brought dad and Vici there because I'd know that they'd like this spot. Cafe Agapita used to be small and overlooked. I was told that the owner, the lola started with a tiny catering business that served small and big events. Dad was actually surprised to see that there's a cafe that's super pet-friendly and where bikers come and go, too. LOL. Puro kasi Tags alam neto saka Nuvali. He teased me: Bakit ngayon mo lang ako dinala dito, 'nak? Me: Walang masayadong tao today kasi saka iinom na ako ng gamot and sakto na andito tayo. Dad: Aba. Nag-drive lang ako, may libreng meal pa kami ni Vici. LOL. Simple joys and asaran talaga. Anyway, I don't know where the crowd is kahapon, but I have this inkling that they avoided this route because of heavy traffic. :p Saks traffic lang talaga and though the bikers are not too many, decent mga bikes nila. LOL. Wala lang akong makitang B. Sabi ni dad: E paano, aayaw sa unli ahon. Me: E bakit si Mekaniko Martilyo, kaya naman folding bike a. :P Hahahahaha. Dad ogled of course. Ganun talaga siya e. Sabi ko, bago siya magsuot ng proper biker attire, magpapayat muna siya. LOLOLLOLL. Wala na raw siyang pag-asa. Hahaha. May mga bikers who greeted Vici and I. 'Pag weekends, I try to lessen small talks talaga. Ako lang 'yun a. So, na-stress lang ako kasi may humawak pa kay Vici agad without asking permission. I actually took a step back and said: 'Di pa siya naliligo. Hahahahahaha. LOL. Oks lang daw. Lol. So, ending... exit ako agad. Stress lang ako kasi may auto-immune condition nga si Vici. 'Yung lang talaga 'yun. Pero sobrang happy siya when he's out and about. Dad told me that si Vici lang talaga reason why lumalabas ako 'pag nasa Manila which I agreed with naman.

I told dad that the best time to come by Cafe Agapita is weekdays talaga. Sumaktong wala lang tao kahapon and the crowd can get "kagulo" kasi marami nga talagang tao dito sa spot na 'to on a usual weekend. Food: 6.5/10. Okay 'yung concept. Super duper generous servings BUT it can be better. As an example, 'yung rice ng Twice Adobo is medyo malata. And it's not warm. 'Di ko sure kung ang attempt ba nila is to have that rustic feel, pero 'pag balmy weather, warm food is comforting talaga. But, the addition of the dried fish and the well done salad saved the dish. This dish actually reminds me of a typical almusal after the fiesta sa bahay ni Inang Sinta, my mom's mother. So baka nga ganun 'yung vibe nitong dish na 'to. Mushroom soup has a variety of mushrooms BUT hindi lumabas 'yung umami which could have been done by slight caramelization and onion and garlic. Pero gets ko naman kasi price point-wise, super goods na siya. What I got was the croissant stuffed with chicken salad. I like croissant. I like salad. Hindi super duper flaky ng croissant pero again, price-wise, ang laki nung serving. 'Di pa ako nakaka-one bite, busog na ako. It came with potato wedges. Oks naman pero lacks flavor din. Again, 'di warm 'yung potato wedges so, it's dull for me. Maganda kasi may contrast ng cold salad and warm/hot potatoes, right? Sabi syempre ni dad, grabe naman daw ako mag-rate; but, he gets it. The best part about Cafe Agapita? A-game sa pag-treat kay Vici. We got the seats in the third floor of the original wooden house and they allowed Vici to sit on the chair. HUHUHUHU. Then, they gave Vici iced water to drink. Happy rin si Vici to roam around the vast grounds. So, for that, 7/10 overall rating ko sa kanila. Wala akong nakitang pet food sa menu so ask ko na lang din next time if meron; though Vici had a few bites of adobo and croissant.

And then, I went to visit my not so secret spot. :) Natuwa din tatay ko. Bili raw siya ng lupa niya doon. Sabi ko, mag-rent na lang siya. AYWWAW. Hahahaha. Sabi ko hinay lang. Unti-unti lang. I dunno but 'pag nasa South side talaga ako, iba. As in. :) It's so calming to think na overthinker ako ng malala. And, though it's gonna be a long and winding road na unliahon, I know so well that I'm on the right track. 'Yung kahit sobrang daming 'di tiyak sa mundo, may uuwian ako na masasabi kong dito ako at home and at peace. South, you are a wonder and you make me wander. I'm seeing you more and more frequently this 2024. And syempre, with my clunky MatchaME and Vici, let's get this on and on and on. Bawal makalas ang tuhod at balakang at iba pang body parts. :) Kapit lungs because we are inching our way there.

And sa bawat pagbalik ko sa bustling city lights, mas may bitbit akong good vibes in an underrated and almost undetectable manner. 'Yung okay ang city life, yes na yes. Pero the life beyond the city is my legit iced matcha laced with white chocolate + cinnamon + vanilla. Ganung levels. Saka ang maganda sa side ng South na 'to, as in, lahat din ng nasa city, andito na rin e. I cannot unsee since ngayon lang ako ulit napadpad dito. Even the restaurants, may Indo-Malay, Viet, Thai, and the works na rin.

Thank you, mother dragon for your love. I guess eto na talaga tayo sa exciting part na less iyak, less triggers, less drama whenever I see your side of the South. Thank you for making me see that what's meant to be will find its way to you, no matter how long it takes and no matter how tough things get... sa lahat ng aspeto ito. And that, the simple life is the life well-lived in full color, in black and white, and everything in between.

Whenever I'm at the verge of spiraling, I'll go back to the cicadas chirping and the pink blooms of kakawate and the cool and calm breeze. Never better. Always.
