I absolutely want to hear about the extremely cursed lighthouse 👀
YEAH BABEYYYYY CURSED LIGHTHOUSE HERE WE GOOO
Ok so this lighthouse is called Minot's Ledge Light. Here it is today.
You may notice that unlike most other lighthouses, it's in the MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN.
It's about a mile or so out from the shore, southeast of Boston Harbor (off the coast of what’s called the South Shore) and it's built into a rock ledge that's just under the water (Minot’s Ledge, after which it’s named. “Minot” was a merchant who lost a very valuable shipment there. Seems kinda fuckin rude to name the ledge after him but whatever).
This ledge, and other rocky ledges nearby, made the area SUPER dangerous before the lighthouse was built. FORTY ships were lost there in less than a decade in the 19th century.
Oh, and folks of an ~age~ might recognize this lighthouse from this famous photo from the blizzard of '78:
Just to give you an idea of what the weather conditions can be like in the area. (Is this foreshadowing? PROBABLY)
Anyway, building a lighthouse here was obviously high priority. There was a bit of an exposé on the negligence of the Lighthouse Establishment (the gov. dept that was in charge of lighthouses at the time), and the construction of Minot’s Ledge was part of a push to show that the department was taking things more seriously.
As the lighthouse needed to be built ON the ledge, some cutting-edge, never-before-seen lighthouse design was in order. (More foreshadowing?? MAYBE???)

(If you notice that it looks nothing like the modern-day lighthouse above...no you don’t. Don’t ruin the story for the rest of the class)
The problem is, Minot’s Ledge itself is only exposed for a few hours at low tide, which obviously presented some problems. No one died building it, but all the equipment was washed away once, and people ALMOST died when they were swept away by currents.
It took years to finish because of the tricky conditions. It was finally finished and lighted on New Year’s in 1850.
It was obvious right away that this design was...not it. The lighthouse would sway violently in rough conditions. (One of the keepers told Henry David Thoreau that bad winds would literally rock their plates off the table.)
The first keeper wrote to the government reporting unsafe conditions, but was ignored. He resigned in October of that year.
The new keeper and his two assistants also reported dangerous conditions. Storms kept weakening the braces, and the structure had to be repaired often. However, every time the authorities came out to inspect the lighthouse it was ALWAYS a calm day, and they were like “idk seems fine?” And continued to ignore safety concerns.
In April of 1851, a storm had kicked up. The keeper had gone to the mainland to restock, but he didn’t make it back before the storm started in earnest. The two assistant lighthouse keepers were left at the light.
This was a BAD storm—nearly a hurricane—that went on for a week. By the fifth day, it looked bleak enough that the assistant keepers released a message in a bottle with their last words.
On day six, the legs of the structure began to fail one at a time. When there were only three legs left, the keepers began to ring the alarm bell continuously for as long as the lighthouse still stood.
By morning, it was completely lost to the ocean.
The two lighthouse keepers’ bodies were later recovered—one had washed ashore nearby, and the other was found on a nearby island a few hundred feet from the mainland. The latter keeper HADN’T died of drowning—he survived and managed to swim to the island, thinking he’d made it to the mainland, only to die of exhaustion and exposure.
Their message in a bottle was found two days later on the North Shore of Boston Harbor. It read: “The beacon cannot last any longer. She is shaking a good three feet each way as I write. God bless you all.”
Here are the ghosty bits:
1) People still say you can hear the bell ringing during bad storms. Once the lighthouse was rebuilt (properly, out of stone this time, which took YEARS—they had to start over at least once when a ship crashed into the structure and took the whole thing out), apparently they had a hard time getting keepers to stay on. They reported hearing the fog bell ringing at odd times, and ghostly figures in the lantern room. Most didn’t make it a year.
2) The lighthouse was automated pretty much as soon as the technology was available, removing the need for lighthouse keepers to live there. But passing ships still reported seeing a man hanging off the side, calling out.
Most people reported that the figure couldn’t be understood, but one Portuguese sailor said that the man was yelling for help in Portuguese. Sure enough, one of the two assistant keepers who perished in the tragedy was Portuguese.
So that’s the story of the cute little “I Love You” lighthouse and the horrible shit that happened there.

GMan sighs forcefully: "...Tommy, I would never doubt your capabilities, but are you quite sure there isn't something more worth your time?"
Tommy stands firm: "I made the perfect dog in a week, I can do soil in less."
GMan looks at him in quiet surprise for a moment, then he sighs again and turns, walking away: "I shall leave the matter in your hands, gentlemen. I believe you'll require some privacy."
"Report back to me when you're done and, oh - do try to be quick."
As his footsteps recede, Tommy's confidence seems to wane.
"I lied..." he admits. "The research took 5 years, I- I just happened to be working on the final modifications the week he'd come back from a business trip..."
"Thank you, Tommy," Darnold says, surprising Tommy.
"...it's the least I could do..." Tommy says sadly, turning around, "but Sasha's-"
"-going to be just fine!" Darnold finishes his sentence for him, presenting the last sleep potion bauble to Tommy.
Tommy's eyes widen: "Oh! Wh- uh- oh, you still have one after all this time??"
"Ye- precisely! But, uhm, I'm gonna need your help..." Darnold says, pulling out his gun fully, and revealing that it isn't a real gun at all. "Y'see, this isn't a gun. Sure it's a tranquiliser gun from-"
His voice switches to his tutorial NPC voice " -THE HIT GAME TEAM FORTRESS 2 -" before returning to normal and continuing, "-but it's not gonna make a convincing gun noise. And we need the gun noise for this to work right. So, uh, if you-"
"Oh, don't worry Darnold," Tommy says, pulling out his own gun and waving it casually, "I'll take care of this."
Unaware of all this, Gordon is still sitting at the table in the main room while being pelted secretly with blue sweet voice by a skeleton behind him.
"Y'know what?" Gordon says, "No...yeah...Yeah...! I've been stressin' all week, I deserve a goddamn break."
He picks up a soda can and readies his new prosthetic hand to open it: "Let's take this baby for a test run, huh?"
Suddenly, a gunshot goes off and startles him and the skeleton. Gordon screams and immediately whips around, right fist clenched and aimed in the direction of the noise.
Gordon quickly remembers he does not have a gun arm to shoot with anymore and swears: "FUCK."
Bubby raises an eyebrow: "Shooting? At a party? Really? Well, that's sort of rude."
Dr Coomer puts a hand to his chest and shakes his head: "Oh dear, what are they teaching the kids these days?"
"THAT'S SERIOUSLY YOUR CONCERN?? MANNERS??" Gordon yells, searching himself frantically for another weapon, "Oh FUCK, I don't have a gun-"
He stops in his tracks when he sees Darnold at the further end of the room, walking towards GMan with something wrapped up in his second labcoat in his hands while Tommy trails after him. That "something" is Sasha, asleep from the potion to fool GMan. /End ID.]

literally been thinking about this for as long as I’ve been shipping them but yeah Mads is not having a good time, Fenton’s trying to help him feel better, and Gyro is trying to convince his family that everything is fine 🙃🙃🙃
Sooooo Mads doesn’t know how to act around Gyro’s family (or his family? he doesn’t know), and spends most of the time in the room they’re staying in (defensive self-isolation babeyyyyy). Whenever he’s around them he’s in automatic ‘say one critical thing about any of us and I will bite your head off’ defense mode. Fenton spends most of his time with Mads trying to help him feel better, or at least just being a companion for when Mads just wants to be away from most of the family. Therefore Gyro is really the only one who spends time with his family, and spends the whole time making excuses like ‘oh yeah Mads didn’t sleep last night so he’s sleeping in that’s why he’s not at breakfast’ ‘Mads is doing laundry because he spilled on his favorite shirt that’s why he’s not coming Christmas shopping’ ‘he’s going to the store to get muffins and therefore can’t do carols with us.’
So uh. from all of that I’m sure you can guess it’s kind of a disasterrrrrr Genevieve can see what’s going on and tries to help, giving instructions to Gyro and Fenton because Mads doesn’t want to talk to her about it. Gabby spends the entire time arguing with Mads over everything, and is the first to passive aggressively be like ‘oh why aren’t Mads and Fenton here, they have something better to do than spend time with family???’ Fulton and Sonia are concerned and confused but are trying to make the most of the holiday with everyone together for the first time, and Grant seems painfully oblivious sldlflglgk
I guess this just comes down to Mads being a diva (he’s just scared of what the family is going to think of him and them) and everyone else having to deal with it XD dw that’s probably a lesson they learn in the end or something fltlggmym

EEE i am so glad you asked - this is my first venture into writing joel and tlou and OC fic. we're following my OC jordan lowell, a half-black young woman who is raised by her father in a white supremacist evangelical protestant cult based in arkansas - the community of Love. when the cult falls to insurrection and is overrun with infected, jordan makes it her mission to find the remaining parts of her family: her estranged mother and unknown half brother, henry (yeah that one.)
joel and ellie are both in this, with joel and jordan's relationship being very platonic and reluctant father-daughter vibes. found family babeyyyyy~ i am super excited to get this out (probably in the late winter/early spring) to explore a tlou family dynamic with an older kid, since jordan is nineteen when this story starts. i also wanted to explore the grief of having a complicated family dynamic and losing that, and the way that can affect someone both before and after the loss.
the family and racial dynamics in this are very personal to me. i've discussed this fic a lot with @wannab-urs and realizing that a situation such as this isn't familiar with a lot of people made me want to write about it. i view jordan as a version of myself that's had the world fail her a lot more and only has rage to channel the impact of that failure. we will slowly learn just how much of a mangled and disturbed person she is. jordan is an angry black woman and there is nothing wrong with that.
oh and the title comes from proverbs 17:17. ok onto the snippet.
Even with the long wooden seats seemingly overflowing with sitting people, there are a pointed few missing from service. A dozen boys—though they'd certainly prefer young men—that Jordan knows varyingly well.
She knows Isaiah. She likes him. He's got that same wandering eye she has, finding the cracks of stained glass or the autumnal explosion of coloured leaves a more worthy subject of his attention than...this. He's also the only other one here like her and unlike them. His skin is more taupe than her tawny, but they notice regardless. It doesn't matter what colour either of them are, not really. All that matters is that it isn't what they wish it were.
Still, the people of Love let kids like them stay. Be here, members of the community, even if it comes with a few mumbled words. A few glares, a violent launch of sticky spit. That was one time. It'd never happened again.
But Isaiah isn't here, his eyes nowhere to be found amongst the crowd. It sets Jordan's stomach alight, gut rolling. One thing Isaiah is that Jordan cannot be is angry. And that, he certainly is. Rage oozes off of him in waves, all-consuming in its power. It's exciting until it's scary. Like when he starts talking about leaving, the two of them, all by themselves. That's something she won't—can't—do. Isaiah never likes that answer.

I do love when sanji gets to be like. strategic. that's one of my favorite aspects of his character, and it separates him nicely from zoro & luffy, the other main fighters - I especially love early on in the story when sanji will go full sneaky and run off to ruin the enemies plans before anyone realizes what's happening
so yea I love him being in charge here

like. listen. AUGHHHHH so much. the 'chapter 800+ secret family reveal' WOULD NOT WORK in like 99.9% of stories but it flows PERFECTLY in one piece bc there is such a precedent for this sort of thing!! for the sort of behavior where you never ever talk about your 'real' (biological) family or where you came from bc IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT!!! OF ONE PIECE!!!!! that the characters get to CHOOSE where they belong and who their family is
(also this reveal happening so late makes the sabo reveal - the 'chapter 500+ secret amnesiac brother reveal' - seem practically early lol)
and like, obviously this theme of choosing your family is handled a lot - like everything with ace, who does exactly this ^ and yet is still burdened by his blood
but ok what I'm getting at is that in basically any other story, a reveal about one of the main characters coming this late would be suuuuuch a stupid asspull, but in this case, it's one of the best writing decisions in the story in ages
like half the straw hats have mysterious/unknown biological origins - nami, zoro (outside of SBSs), franky, sanji (before now), brook (ig lol)...even luffy's mom and robin's dad and stuff are never mentioned. and none of this is ever really remarked upon - they DO have family, even if it isn't by blood
so the story sets this standard that the found family is The family and it doesn't matter where the characters came from. and this is the 'right' way of going about things, that the straw hats and other 'good guys' support
however, not everyone in the story agrees with this. which is huuuuge and so so juicy. like, ace gets to choose his brothers and his pirate dad/family, but the world govt will NOT forget or ignore his biological parentage, and they kill him for that. GODDDD it's so goooood
so you get the POV charaters (straw hats) who believe that where you came from biologically doesn't matter, and a lot of the antagonist characters who think it DOES matter.
so this creates the perfect atmosphere for us to never hear about the vinsmokes, bc we're seeing things via the straw hats, and sanji would never want or need to mention them, ever
the antagonists, though...different story. so that allows the perfect time for a reveal here!!!!
and HHHHH there are some EXCELLENT little tidbits earlier in the story - obviously sanji mentioning he's from north blue, and even his name w/the 'three'...it's stuff that's so small that it can easily be brushed aside if it doesn't amount to anything, but since it did we can look back and be like oh shiiiit
even him calling himself mr prince!!! like...he technically IS a prince by blood!!!
and like, ik a lot of people thought he'd be a celestial dragon, but I think it's better this way, bc if he DID have knowledge of the celestial dragons, even from when he was a kid, that would be useful in a way that would make it look bad if he witheld the knowledge previously, whereas the vinsmokes existing and sanji knowing about them doesn't really help anything...anyways, rambling.
so I love the last panel here, with sanji just looking completely shocked and horrified. because it isn't like he's really been hiding his past on purpose - he thought it didn't matter where he was originally from, because with the straw hats, it DIDN'T!!
but I feel like he had to have thought about it at least sometimes - what would happen if the vinsmokes came looking for him for whatever reason
but at the same time, we find out later that they basically kicked him out and told him to never come back, so he probably thought he'd never have to deal with them again (though I feel like he had to have wondered if he'd ever run into them in his travels...)
aaaanyways okay this is getting long and this is literally just the beginning of my long meta rants I'm sure. more to come soon!

Okay if you can handle 07 cg animation and female character design. and the weird intro narration. ITS A BOP
I mean okay i dont even think its bad animation, just a little funky looking. but i love it. and has a very nice "spooky turtles fading into shadows with glowing eyes" effect. but yeah freaky stick arm ladies. rip. well theres only 3 of them anyway... ksdfbgs -> turtles difficulties.
the animated sets are gorgeous. like. lush environments for running around in. atmospheric lightin. DOING. the fucking most. with their water effects rendering of the time.
love a movie with. three intros. not really. but theres classic "hey look turtles, theyre mutants! and ninja!". theres hey this ancient evil thing needs a set up. and then theres. leos been hanging in... central america for 2 years. and thats. well. theres training reasons for it, but really theres angst reasons for it.
and yes. this is angst turtles narrative babeyyyyy. god help me but that was good ass leo raph fighting. the movies are gonna movie. and it is secondary mikey donnie. turtle movie constant :/. BUT. ITS GOOD. is the thing. leos been gone, and thinks he failed his training. in his absence don and mike moved to. more civilian occupations (aka IT support and kids birthdays lol). so raphs is doing a lone vigilante thing. motorbike and all.
Lemme try not to. Just repeat every narrative beat in this thread of the movie but. Just like, doing the vibe of anyone whose been away from family/friends for a while. Trying to mesh back in. Miscalculation due to things you've missed. And on top of that, trying to be the leader, with the insecurity of his perceived failure. And Raph who resents the idea they needed Leo, and hurt by his absense. And hiding his solo actions from everyone.
And well. When the words fail sometimes you want to see the characters have an emotional fraught duel!! And this fucking delivers. Maximal... catharsis i suppose.
The rest of the plot vibes well enough with keeping the emotional core of getting this family working together again. Capture monsters quests. Teases for future movies that never happened. But! It's fun! It is fun. It doing GREAT. On the funny and crying alignment chart for turtles media. Sweet boys, good dad splinter moments (even if not always good teacher, such is the way). Oh, and movie turtles that can USE THEIR WEAPONS. In fights. Like. On their opponents. Like. Just a pretty strong movie over all.
The only other thing to say about this is. great trivia to learn/s. Got fucked up by some studio stuff. INCLUDING. The weinstein company.... Which lead to recasting some of the rolls with celebrities. which is probably why the turtles are all veterans of VO work but then like. April, Casey and another character are all. BIG FAMOUS ACTORS. Cant have shit in animation. that been true and remains true huh.

1. what is your favorite color to work with?
very fond of both blue-grey (mostly for background colors) and dark red (mostly for lines)... but also anything extremely eye-searing is very fun to work with!!
2. who is your favorite character to draw?
out of my ocs, I'd say chungy! her proportions are fun and goofy <3 but also zephyr bc I keep making his hair more and more fluffy the more I draw her... tbh to be honest all my ocs are very fun 4 me to draw svhddvs

already answered! oh but 4got to add that usually looping one song/having music w/o lyrics helps me to focus more. sometimes I will spend an hour just in a haze and then realize I've been looping one song the whole time svdndgs

fairly often! I doodle a lot in class, but I usually leave the bigger pieces for weekends or days off svdhss. usually.
5. digital or traditional?
I like both! I think I doodle a lot more traditionally and do more polished stuff digitally, but there's always some exceptions. I need to use my sketchbook more... svjdsvs
9. what drawing program do you use? (if the artist does digital art)
ms paint babeyyyyy but on my phone I use this app called artflow! it's pretty nice and I've been using it for so long that I don't wanna switch sgdhsgs.
10. are you right or left handed?
right handed! not even remotely ambidextrous my left hand is very much my nondominant hand sgdhsgs
11. warm or cool colors?
I think I generally gravitate towards warm colors! I do love throwing up a warm-hued overlay on some of my digital stuff
14. what was something that you used to draw a lot that you don’t draw as much anymore?
already answered! I was v much the kid sitting in the back of the class drawing pokemon all day dvdhshs. when I was like 11ish I'd make angsty drawings of my pokemon black team that were based on death cab for cutie/keane/other 2000s alt rock songs sbfnhdbsns.
