So I just read this afternoon that Ray Stevenson has died at the age of 58 (which is absolutely no age, the poor fella, what a shock).
I'm not gonna pretend to know much about his back catalogue of work or say I was an especial fan or anything disingenuous like that, but I do really want to talk for a quick moment about the one role I really know and love him for - Porthos in the 2011 adaptation of The Three Musketeers.
Tumblr media
Now, I know and you know that this version of The Musketeers is massively unpopular for a whole host of reasons - most notably the silly airship storyline (personally, I have such a well-trained suspension of disbelief that I can 100% deal with the airship aspect of it, but I totally get why it's an unpopular addition to the story) - but I will happily die on the hill that it is the closest combination of writing and portrayal of the Core Four yet (sorry, BBC version). Logan Lerman's d'Artagnan was a cheeky 19-year-old rascal who thought he was all that and a bag of chips and didn't care who knew it. Matthew Macfadyen's Athos was sullen and morose (but in a really hot way obvs, cos yknow - Athos) and didn't waste a word of dialogue. Luke Evans' Aramis was quiet, sober, extremely spiritual and didn't go around trying to seduce everything that moved the whole time.
But Ray Stevenson's Porthos? Oh. Oh this was sublime. Up until this adaptation, Porthos had more often than not been played as the comic relief: the large, overweight, affable drunk of no fixed IQ whose prowess at fighting was more down to luck and subtle slapstick than his good judgement. This version of Porthos couldn't have been further away from those portrayals.
Tumblr media
He was a quick-witted, smart, physically powerful and agile fighter, whose hand-to-hand combat skills were so notorious that he never needed to use his sword. My absolute favourite moment that showed this fact so beautifully was at the end of the big fight scene with the Red Guards ("Four against FORTY? And you beat them like a drum?! *snort*!" oh, Louis!) when the Guards were reeling a bit, and trying to decide whether to go another round. At that point, Porthos casually pushed his sword from the scabbard with his thumb by about 2 inches - and that was enough to send the Red Guards running for the hills!! I screamed!! Perfect characterisation!! Porthos to an absolute T!!!!!
Tumblr media
Not only that, but his version of Porthos was an unashamed yet impoverished dandy, a dedicated follower of fashion who took his time to choose exactly the right cut of new clothes in exactly the right colours - while his rich, married lover happily picked up the tab for him. He understood the way the right clothes and the right combination of appearance and demeanour in any given scenario could give him the upper hand, not only in fighting but also in all of his interpersonal relationships and encounters.
Tumblr media
This is the Porthos I had wanted for years. This is the Porthos I cheered and applauded for when I finally saw the version that had lived in my head all those years had finally made it to the screen.
Don't get me wrong, of course the BBC Musketeers owns a huge part of my heart and soul and I love so much about them - but the 2011 Musketeers was so special because for me it was probably the very first time I finally got to see the Musketeers as the book described them, rather than just as the standard accepted carbon copies that had been passed down by Hollywood over the decades, and which bear little to no resemblance to the actual characters in the book. I have no idea if I've actually seen any of Ray's other performances or not, to be honest. Porthos may not be his finest hour onscreen, I really don't know. It may not be the part he's best known for. But if nothing else, Ray finally gave the world a Porthos that Dumas would have recognised.
Despite the fact the film as a whole was received poorly, his portrayal was a genuine gift, and I am privileged to be able to remember him as having given this Musketeer fangirl the abject joy of finally seeing Porthos played as he should have been all along. Not as a large, loud drunk who was just there to be big, strong and funny - but as a highly skilled, intelligent, audacious soldier with a sharp sense of humour and an even sharper dress sense; and who, rather than simply bringing up the rear as The Other Guy or the Big Fella, showed that he was quite possibly the Musketeers' MVP.
Thank you, Ray. Goodnight, and rest well.

Kory being put in a position of motherhood would be so different and something I don’t think has really been done in regards to iconic characters in main continuity having children. Like women in comics are either the ones married to the hero and are the mother of their kids or they are the ones who get killed off at the beginning to make way for the hero. But can we honestly say that dc or marvel (I’m not to well versed there to be honest) has had a woman in that role who is super powered and is a mother and is still hero-ing with no like affiliation to like a set in place family (batfamily, Arrow fam, etc.) Like yes we have Wonder Woman but I don’t think like she has that kind of audience where a child is something people would want to see from her. And Kory doesn’t have that solo hero status but it’s not because she can’t, but because dc has failed to work with her in any way that currently can push her into this role. She’s ready for it and she has the audience for it. She literally could be the hero on par with so many others and yet nothing.
YEAH.. the way dc treats motherhood is very all or nothing like either you're a civilian mother holding down the fort with a job on the side or you're a mother and then you're dead or obv in our worst case scenarios you're a witch mother doomed to abusing your child lol. the rare standout example of imra aka saturn girl from the legion of super heroes does come to mind but ig that's on a technicality bc garth aka lightning lad decided to step in and take on more of the stay at home duties while imra maintained an active leadership role in the legion (at least as i recall. my legion reading is very sparse but i remember i had a brief phase where i was obsessed with these two and read issues for them here and there). otherwise i don't think dc gives much credence to characters who are mothers and get to be like. honored in that and their own personhood simultaneously. it's very odd bc i'm sure there's a fanbase that could relate to that yknow like there are plenty of adult women reading comics and some of them have got to be mothers so the fact that the portrayal of that experience is so.. subpar.. is really abysmal. and i really do agree kory would have been a fabulous exploration of it had writers cared it's a shame they didn't

POST-CRISIS JASON, VERSION 1: I want revenge against my former mentor/adoptive father, who I see as having failed me. I see the fact that he hasn’t taken vengeance for my murder as both a personal betrayal and moral failure. My methods are violent and unpredictable, and I’m not a good person, but I’m still shown to have my own moral code, however questionable it might be. I can be both an antagonist and occasional ally towards the heroes depending on the situation.
POST-CRISIS JASON, VERSION 2: I have literally no other motivation besides anger and jealousy towards the other, Better™ Robins. I will act ridiculously evil for plot convenience but still be easily defeated by the heroes. A minimum of ten panels per issue will be devoted to pointing out how Crazy™ I am. I’m going to kill a bunch of random people and shoot this 10-year-old now.
#like... yall wonder why jason fans 'pick and choose' his appearances when these are basically two entirely different characters#one is actually interesting to read about and the other is a plot device#and also! it's not like v1 jason can't be a villain! he's straight up the villain of utrh like!!!#genuinely one of the best parts of jason's early post resurrection character is his potential to go between ally & enemy & hero & villain#and to exist outside of the usual 'good guy'/'bad guy' dichotomy by not fitting neatly into either#while also being a character with a massive impact on comic book history (via death in the family changing batman storylines for years)#with all the associated baggage for both the in universe characters and out of universe readers#but yknow let's just make him the Crazy Evil Shooty Guy instead that's fine too#jason obv isn't the worst treated character in dc but he's one of the ones i get the most mad about#the potential this guy has is INCREDIBLE and dc just WASTES IT#jason todd#dc negative#anyways. whom among us does not pick & choose versions of our favorite characters when comic book canon is made of wet tissue paper#also want to mention how like#solely good and solely bad characters are FINE. a character doesn't have to be morally gray to be interesting & compelling#(see: cassandra cain being one of the most morally good & also most complex characters pre reboot flattening her out)#but dc has a habit of taking morally gray characters and making them Just Good or Just Bad and passing it off as character development#and really just like. erasing everything interesting about those characters instead#let characters be good let them be bad let them be both but for the love of god make them INTERESTING TO READ ABOUT

Have you read the Marvel Pride issue? What did you think?
Ok I might be missing a story or two but in summary:
The opening w David?? Genuinely really enjoyed it especially Billy and Teddy’s monologues genuinely emotional
The Mystique story?? Genuinely emotionally impacted me and the art was so nice
Did not care about the Nico/what’s her name one too short to be meaningful and I’m just homophobic towards their ship tbh
Both?? Northstar ones were so ugly king I’m so sorry I know you’re sexy in my heart I know it
The David one!! Genuinely I enjoyed it I cannot believe how much thinkfast food we’re getting all of a sudden..iconic
The Bobby one w Magneto?? Very good finally someone understands comics
The Karma one? Did not love seemed honestly kinda cringey and forced like not to theorize but what’s her name really reads like they switched out Dani for her like..who is she why does she matter anyway it’s not DaniXian which objectively makes it bad (main flaw of every other story too obv)
The Akihiro and new dude one?? Genuinely so good Honestly far more compelling then it should of been and really I would rather see their relationship then the weird forced relationship Akihiro is in-in xfi rn (not literally forced the writing is just so forced yknow)

{{ "Give me a character and I will answer..." Poison Ivy please? 8O
got bless u zira, this took forever but it rlly helped me calm down, thank you. (under the cut bc it got LONG)
Why I like them: jfdklsa;fj i mean the OBVS ’hot villain that i’ve definitely been crushing on since i was a 5 yr old’ aside, shes such a strong character/villain. one of those that you just, instantly get a knack for her voice & demeanor and motivations. and the fact that shes so clearly lesbian coded like! whether intentional or not, and we can argue the merits & unfortunate effects of queer-coding villains some other time but she was one of my comfort characters when i started Really figuring out/accepting my attraction to women.
Why I don’t: again, the flipside of clearly Queer-coded villains. the fact that she’s so many times reduced to the ‘man-hating feminist’ (esp when her villainous activities as an eco-terrorist are much more in her style anyways?) these are moreso issues with her writers than anything lmao
Favorite episode (scene if movie): i mean the Harley/Ivy team-up episode is OBVSL Iconic, but a close second for me is def the BTAS one where she’s Reformed for like, 0.00003 seconds lmao. The whole set up for the ep & just ugh. i loved that ep as a kid and it STILL HOLDS UP
Favorite season/movie: yknow, ima shout-out to Arkhamverse Ivy here bc like. In Asylum? Taking over the Gardens & Upgrading herself to Boss status? Iconic. In City? Finding a chill spot to camp out and make herself at home and helping her gf Selina w/ stealing some shit? I-con-ic. Knight? SAVING THE WHOLE DAMN CITY AT THE GREATEST COST? SHIT BOI I HAVENT STOPPED CRYING FOR 4 YRS NOW
Favorite line: loooooord her “Nature always wins.” line thats first echoed from Asylum, right at the beginning of Knight, and then when she brings that back at the END I CRY
Favorite outfit: as much as im a Hella Gay for all of her more revealing outfits, Ivy in dresses will always be my weakness and this was the best reblog/edit i could find in my tags lmao
Ships: I mean HarlIvy OBVSLY, CatIvy, (Sirens as a Polyship should be Obvs), (i read a few issues of GCS and tbh, antagonistic Zee/Ivy gives me Life too & i’m too scared to find out if its a rarepair like i think it is) tbh ANY Ivy/girl ship is good. but i aint ever gonna go back to shipping her with men lmao. not gonna happen (nb characters tho… i want to Explore that. omg nb!Ivy tho what if)
FriendShips: I liked her friendship (ally-ship? lmao) with Penguin on Gotham! TBH any of the other Gotham Rogues make Excellent chemistry all around bc like… theyre all so well-established & Wary of each other haha. I’d LOVE to explore a gen kinship with Swamp Thing (obvsly with her Overzealous Need to Protect the Green, but also her borderline magical influence on it. yeah its Science for her BUT IS IT STRICTLY SCIENCE? IS IT?)
Head Canon: She absolutely Knows when someone who’s Trying Not To Kill Their Plants really means it, and sometimes she’ll get So Frustrated when they cant figure it out that she’ll just. Show Up at their front door in the middle of the day to slip a note under it like “stop drowning them, and take them out of direct sunlight idiot”. its part of her rehab. she’ll work on being nicer abt it when people stop killing their plants lmao
Unpopular opinion: idk if its unpopular but uhhhh, A Good Check on writing/keeping Ivy’s nuance is that she, canonically, likes kids. She’s very matronly. She’s not like the head-over-heels, talks abt them all the time, type. But she cares very deeply about children. and i rlly gotta remember that too bc its such a wonderful trait for her ahhhhh
A wish: i dont want her to get like, 100% leaf turning redemption (lmao) but like. Going from 'wanting the Entire City Dead’ to 'causes slight/minor annoyances to assholes who deserve it while being a force for Meaningful Change’ would be nice. just something morally grey
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: i mean it’s already happened twice now but this Also Comics we’re talking about here, but God DC, you really fucked up. You Buried My Gay. Twice now. And sure, things get rebooted, characters are brought back from the dead. But just, For Once, can my girl get a neutral end? please for the love of god. let her have SOME happiness.
5 words to best describe them: Confident, cunning, brilliant, sneaky, and refined.
My nickname for them: my mom lmao. she is tho.

So I want to get into faction paradox and I have at least some understanding of it but idk where to start on with the actual, yknow, content, so what would you suggest starting on?
Great question! I’m going to make this unnecessarily complex.
If you’re coming at the series as a Doctor Who fan, I highly recommend starting with Alien Bodies, which is maybe the best Doctor Who novel ever and pioneered a lot of the themes of the modern series; after that, there are three “routes”, if you will. Which one you choose depends on how much you liked the Eighth Doctor with Sam, and how much you liked ... everything else in the story.
Eighth Doctor route: If you want the full story of the Doctor with his companions, just go forward in order through the EDAs. Hopefully Interference or The Taking of Planet 5 will pull you the Faction’s way.
Compassion route: If you want the story of 8 with the War, after Alien Bodies, read The Scarlet Empress, Unnatural History, Interference, The Blue Angel, The Taking of Planet 5, The Shadows of Avalon (which is kinda bad, but necessary), and The Ancestor Cell. Then go to the Faction Paradox route.
Faction Paradox route: Finally, if you want just the story of the War, go ahead and read The Book of the War! Keep in mind it has spoilers for a lot of Eighth Doctor Adventures stuff, but familiarity with the EDAs is absolutely unnecessary for enjoying BotW.
From there, you can go into the audios. The main characters of the audios are Justine from Alien Bodies and Christine Summerfield aka Eliza from Dead Romance. However, you very much don’t need to understand those stories to enjoy the audios; as far as I can remember, they’re referenced only once in passing. (Also, I recommend reading the FP comics and The Adventuress of Henrietta Street after the Faction Paradox Protocols, and do yourself a favor and watch Pyramids of Mars after True History.)
Or you can go into the books! All the Faction Paradox books and anthologies are stand-alone and damn good, though you should probably read Of the City of the Saved... before A Romance in Twelve Parts and the City of the Saved anthologies obv. There are some sneaky references to Predating the Predators in a few of these, but they’re not really necessary, so that’s completely optional.
Finally, if you’re coming at the series as a fan of good science fiction literature, take the “Faction Paradox route” mentioned above. Unlike a lot of other Doctor Who spinoffs, Faction Paradox works even when totally divorced from its source material, which is one of the best parts of the series.
Let me know which route you pick, and good luck! :)

mtmte liveblog issue 12
lets do itttt
I love nick roches art...he draws rodimus so twinky, its a delight
ohhh I forgot abt the non-linear storytelling this issue. bangin
rewinds feet don't even touch the ground hhhhhh tiny
i fuckgin love that panel of skids talking abt briefing vs debriefing, everything both he and rodimus say is just golden
I love hearing tailgate tell completely made up stories from his primal vanguard days, that slaps storytelling-wise
HHHHHH and the fact that tailgate’s happiest memory is movie night at rewinds ;_; gosh
lmao I love whirl kicking down the door
OOOOH and then the time skip!!!!!!!!! I fucking love non-linear stories
jesus, swerves whole face being gone is still disturbing
magnus rlly is a grade A badass. I forgot he has missile shoulders
rodimus saying ‘wham, bam, in the van!’ is my fuckgin favorite hvbsdhhfbhdjkf that's my son right there
cd saying that rewind is allergic to ultraviolet light [eyes emoji] remember how UV light is the only way to see mnemosurgery marks? that little detail must be in there for that ‘cd did mnemosurgery on rewind’ plotline that jro didn't end up doing (thankfully)
I love how mtmte came up with a name for cybertronian marriage :) that's the kind of lore I want baybe!
also rewind and cd hhhhhh they....the og canon gays...confirmed outright in issue 12, which is so early on, considering!...its a beautiful thing. I will talk about the representation in mtmte Extensively throughout my reread since this is, yknow, Just The Beginning when it comes to canon gays - which, again, what a beautiful thing!
actually I'm not done. thinking abt the fact that this issue came out in 2012 and also this is freaking TRANSFORMERS of all things - a long-running franchise whose primary audience is adolescent boys - is extra amazing. augh, the representation! it gets me man.
ok, so, the story! jesus poor cyclonus
chromedome riding on the trex guy hbhsjkfbjshdf dude. I choose to believe that that’s his go-to tactic here bc he’s probably pretty terrible at fighting. idk how canon that is but I just see cd as the type of dude who cant fight well at all, regardless of how many fights he’s actually been in
minibot squad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm really interested in the little we see of general cybertronian attitude towards organics - obvs the decepticons think very little of them, and the autobots generally believe all life is important, but the post-war attitude seems a little more grey and I like that
tailgate!!!!!!!!!!!! I love tailgate SO much. the way he volunteers to defuse a bomb that he has NO idea how to defuse, and the way he lies so quickly and casually? fucking love it
and then he takes all of his bomb disarming cues from rewind, who ALSO isn't a bomb disposal expert by any means - like, tailgate risks both his own life and everyone else’s, just because he wont come clean about his real job - that's some [chefs kiss] characterization right there, I love it
augh I love how he prompts rewind, who of COURSE would have some idea about this as an archivist, for help, and rewind doesn't have any idea that tailgate’s even more clueless than him
but tg, being a generally good person, still tells rewind he should proooooobably stand clear - just in case!!!!!
and then rewind whips out some marriage issues and tg is like ooookay then lol
cyclonus just stabbing people w/his hands....icon
whirl quoting the raw ass line ‘you, who are without mercy, now plead for it?’ nice
swerve. WHY would you point a gun AT YOUR OWN FACE. especially a gun made by BRAINSTORM. why did anybody let swerve handle firearms if this is how he does it. actually, why did anyone give swerve a gun after the thing w/rung. jesus yall. so not only are hipaa laws basically non-existent on cybertron, but gun safety is a rarely-taught thing as well. no wonder yall have issues
so cd must not like cyclonus bc cyclonus was the one who attacked kimia, where cd worked. right?? am I remembering tfwiki correctly? lmao
OOOOF cd saying he was born w/out innermost....I cant remember, is it canon or just extrapolation that that isn't true, and rather it was that cd gave all his innermost energon away w/his previous husbands and whatnot, but he doesn't remember since he forgot about them? either way, oof
all the functionist history stuff is so INTERESTING...I could read an entire comic about just like, pre-war when the functionists were just taking over
tg saying he hates dominus - is that that tweet from jro where somebody asked him why tg said that, and jro basically said ‘he’s petty and jealous’ lol I fucking love it. I love how a character like tailgate, who is very ‘pure’/innocent, has flaws as well
cd has a good point - its hard to kill tfs. so, that makes it extra fucking depressing that cd was seeking out death to that extent
gahhhh the whole rewind-dominus thing is so INTERESTING - I love how vague things are...we only hear about dominus from other people’s perspectives; mainly rewind who clearly thought highly of him, but he’s obviously biased, so it’s hard to tell what dominus was REALLY like, especially with the unavoidable power gap between rewind and dominus...UGH its so interesting
oof, the whole dynamic of cd thinking that rewind cares more about dominus - dominus the ghost, and finding out what happened to him in general - than chromedome himself, is just so Ouch
and the fact that cd thinks that the SOLE reason that rewind is going into battle is so he can look for dominus, but tg makes a good point - rewind is likely also worried abt cd’s safety, especially after dominus disappeared how he did - rewind is probably terrified that the same thing will happen w/cd, bc rewind cares about cd just as much as he cared/cares about dominus, but cd cant see that. AUGHHHH the Complexity!! mannnn
HHHH and like I adore that this first gay couple we get isn't perfect, and that's OKAY bc they’re not The Gay Rep, we get plenty of other gays with their own 3-dimensional relationships....augh bruh it Gets me ok
AHHHHHHHHHH THE OVERLORD STUFF. AUGHHHHHH
who was that talking to cd?? I don't remember....it must've been drift, I think? or maybe brainstorm...
whirl :’) I mean, we find out later that its kinda his fault that rewind was blown up, but still, him putting his own life at risk to save rewind...aww
cyclonus be nice to tg, he’s trying to give you his cool baja blast innermost energon
CYCLONUS BE NICE :( :( :(
we gotta have our slowburn, tho....OOOOUGH
hhhh and then cyclonus like, realizes how much of a dick he’s being and goes back to help tg.... ;_;
cyclonus my man u are lucky that tailgate is so forgiving
and then we have whirl and cyclonus, which is another relationship i LOVE. their development is just...[chefs kiss]
cyc just grabbing tg by the head and YEETING him out the door...lmao
cyclonus’s extremely detailed threat to whirl came at like, the WORST possible time lmao
alternatively, rewind unfortunately asked the worst two people for help at the worst time
also alternatively, tg defusing his first bomb ever based on instructions from another amateur was maybe not the best move
and of course whirl just deciding to lock cyclonus (and rewind whoops) in with a bomb lmao
the requisite to joining the lost light is that you have to be a complete disaster of a person, on some level
cyclonus shielding rewind ;_;
fucking love how they managed to have a cliffhanger w/the bomb going off, despite us seeing exactly what the outcome of that was earlier in this very issue. brilliant
ah, issue 12, the issue that officially canonized the gays and introduced us to a whole bunch of worldbuilding on cybertronian relationships. i love it! plus we have some fascinating backstory and some cool character stuff, and relationship development for tg and cyclonus. awesome stuff!
up next: humansona business! oh fuck yeah
