Recognize the Signs of a Stroke
Doctors say “time is brain” when it comes to treating a stroke. The faster a person gets to the emergency room, the better the prognosis.
Memorize the acronym F.A.S.T
F= Face: is one side of the face drooping?
A= Arm: Can the person raise both or one arm?
S= Speech: Is speech slurred or confused?
T= Time: Time is critical. Call 9-1-1 immediately!

Caregiver Newsletter Issue #640
Brain Matters
Yesterday, we spent the day with our fellow Fearless Caregivers in the Treasure Coast of Florida. The Fearless Caregiver Conference was held at the exquisite Kane Center and I must say that every community should have such a facility.  Nice folks, great food, support groups, medical plaza, Area Agency on Aging…Whew!
Like the Kane Center, I think yesterday’s (125th) Fearless Caregiver Conference included everything.  A morning question and answer panel that covered all things to do with caregiving from before your caregiving begins to preparing for after caregiving...read more

This Week's Carenote
My 95-year-old mother-in-law is burning a lot of what she cooks and we are afraid she will catch the house on fire. She loves to cook. She likes fried foods a lot. Is there any way to fix the stove so it can't be set on high? We talked about unplugging the stove, but then we are afraid she will stop eating altogether. I know there are other ways to cook (microwave, slow cooker, toaster oven), but they are not the same as frying on the stove. Help!

Take control of the medications --Now!
Reaction Subtraction
My friend Larry came by the house two weekends ago. It was great to see him. He had a stroke a few years ago which curtailed his motorcycling, boating and fishing. But Larry has made great strides through terrific doctors and strict adherence to his physical therapy schedule. The effects of his stroke have become dramatically reduced to the point where we were talking about what kind of car he wanted to buy.
Larry’s wife has been by his side the entire time of his recovery – and has taken over everything from running his business to the household finances. Although Larry had always handled the business and home finances, he told me how proud he was of his wife for her work. In fact, in many ways, she is managing things better than he had done in the past. The issue they are having now is how much of his active schedule can Larry take on again and at what pace. Like for so many couples, this transfer of and possible return to duties once a spouse recovers from an injury or disease can be quite challenging. And with the exception of some disagreement about the timing of Larry’s slipping behind the wheel again, things have gone very well for them due to an open and active dialogue.
