i have emerged at long last from an overwhelming amount of hours at work more determined than ever to bash out the last of these prompts that i've had since January. on with the ficlet prompt fill!

3:23am, the nursery
Later, Derek isn’t sure if it’s the slight movement of the mattress or the small draft of cooler air that wakes him. All he knows is one moment he’s firmly asleep, and in the next he’s blinking sleep out of his eyes as he hears soft footfalls moving down the hall. He’s not sure what time it is, but it feels like the middle of the night—there’s a certain quality, a depth of the darkness outside the windows, that suggests all non-nocturnal creatures should be sleeping. He’s on his way back to dreamland when he catches some noises from beyond the bedroom.
A click of a door handle, a tiny hinge squeak, a bit of rain from a white noise machine, and the happy, nonsense babbling of his daughter greeting his husband—utterly unconcerned with the late hour. Derek swings himself out of bed and traces Will’s path down the hall to the nursery. The sight that greets him isn’t new by any stretch, but it still makes him feel like a swooning romantic heroine out on the moors.
Will is leaning over the crib, bare back outlined by the light of the moon, elbows propped on the railing as he lets Elena use his dangling fingers to pull herself upright. Their foreheads come together a touch violently from their daughter’s enthusiasm, but Will gives no indication that her headbut hurt him, merely extricating one hand to smooth over her face as he shifts to kiss her forehead. Elena seems unhurt as well, as her delighted ramble hasn’t so much as stuttered, let alone ceased or given way to tears. Derek leans against the doorframe and just watches the pair of them, fondness and love swelling and swirling beneath his skin.
His husband is the very picture of focused listening, nodding seriously as Elena chatters and responding with thoughtful murmuring when she takes a breath. Elena doesn’t have an extensive vocabulary yet, but Will always answers her as though she’s made perfect sense. Derek does too, but Will has this effortless knack of making whoever he’s talking to feel important and heard that Derek has always had to work at to achieve. It’s clear their daughter has realized how content Will’s focus can make one feel.
Derek is sure that Will knows he’s there, but he keeps his attention on Elena, and Derek lets him. He hasn’t been home for almost a week—stupid Canadian road trips that Derek doesn’t miss at all are stupid—and he missed her bedtime tonight. Honestly, Derek is surprised he didn’t just camp out in Elena’s room after he got home. There was many a night right after they brought her home from the hospital that Derek would come back from brushing his teeth to an empty room, only to find his husband sat on the floor with his back against the crib, head turned uncomfortably so he could watch her breathing through the rails. Will loves hockey—wants to keep playing as long as he can—but Derek knows how much Will misses them both when he has to travel.
Elena is yawning between each incomprehensible phrase now, and Will gently eases her down to the mattress again. Derek holds in a chuckle as Will makes to pull his hand away only for Elena to reach out and grip his finger firmly in her fist—unwilling to let Will move any further away. Derek can certainly relate. Will pets her already wild curls steadily, coaxing her to sleep with a soothing, hummed rendition of I’ll Stand By You. It’s truly as though he wants Derek to expire from the cuteness.
Eventually Elena’s breathing evens out, and her grip slackens enough that Will can slip free. He walks backwards away from the crib until he’s leaning against Derek’s chest, eyes still on their daughter. Derek curls his arms around Will’s waist and rests his chin on his shoulder.
“I thought you’d be out till breakfast after such a long roadie,” Derek whispers.
“Me too,” Will sighs, letting Derek support more of his weight. “But my brain wouldn’t settle until I’d seen her.”
Derek drops a kiss to Will’s shoulder. “And now that you have? Come back to bed?”
“Yeah. Let’s go.”
Derek squeezes him tight once and then lets go, only to tangle their fingers together as he leads them back down the hall to their bedroom. They climb into bed and Derek ends up in his favorite spot, sprawled across Will’s chest, his head nestled in the crook of Will’s neck. Will’s free arm comes up and slings across Derek’s waist, keeping him close and Derek hums contentedly.
“G’night,” Derek says, “Love you.”
“Love you, too.”
Neither of them so much as twitches until morning.

You'd be correct. This technically breaks the rule I set for myself of not allowing fics that start with "The" but I love it so much??? Do yourself a favor and read the whole series. took you for a working boy by pukner; pukner manages to simultaneously write the most profoundly moving and gut-busting hysterical fics. Also anytime anyone says "you can't make that character trans" I read 5 more fics where the author makes a character trans. I'm fueled by spite and you're only making me more powerful.
Good Omens
Take My Hand, Take My Whole Life Too by @thebibliosphere; Have we all read it and loved it already? Don't care, still lovely, and with season 2 of the show coming up, well worth a revisit. Joy has a Pratchettesque style to begin with, which just makes it even better.
Star Wars (sequel trilogy)
Tomorrow (there'll be more of us) by dirmircharmer; someone on here was recently complaining that the movies didn't do enough with Finn defecting and the ways that could have led other Stormtroppers to as well. This fills that gap; also check out all the related fic at the bottom of it for more.
MCU
take it or leave it by kellifer_fic; The year was two thousand and a number I shan't say so I don't have to confront the passage of time. Everything was great, I still had faith in humanity, the MCU had not yet completely shit the bed and absolutely exhausted my patience. This is Clint x Darcy, which is not everyone's cup of tea, but mostly it's a very funny story about superheros attempting to lay low as normal people and mostly being pretty bad at it.

favorite time of year: autumn, i love halloween, i love having the windows open, i love the crispness of the air. plus something about autumn gets the creative juices flowing.
comfort food: spaghetti is my beloved. might just have to say pasta in general.
do you collect something: i used to collect funko pops, it got a bit out of hand, and i stopped outside of getting ones for my absolute favorite characters, including a few customs. i like having little visual figures of my faves and i think it’s incredibly valid of me. don’t really collect anything now.
favorite drink: iced coffee, unsweetened iced tea. there is no in between.
favorite song: i have so many favorites, but i’ll settle on meet me in the woods by lord huron
current favorite song: poetry by wrabel, not only is it a great song, but it gives me nurseydex thoughts like no other.
favorite fic: cocktails & cheese by @aurlyn. cullen/alistair is such a great ship and this fic is an absolute BANGER.

seven sentence wip thing

have seven eight okay 12 (but a lot of them are really short) sentences from the next chapter of the nursey/dex heartflower au
He only manages to draw his eyes away from the strong muscles on Dex’s back because of the smell of pie. There’s a piece sitting on the desk they share (badly) with a note propped next to it. He reaches out with a slightly shaking hand to pick it up.
Nursey -
I noticed you weren’t back yet and didn’t want you to miss out on the rhubarb since I know it’s your favorite.
Try not to leave this one to grow mold.
- Dex
As he reaches the end of the note he feels a new flower mark etching its way onto his ribs. He eats the pie first - some things are more important - and then goes to check it in the bathroom mirror.
It’s a pear blossom. Affection. More than just lovely.

What made you ship it?
Well Sokka/Suki is the best canon ship (bisexual solidarity) and I checked out Zuko/Sokka when I heard it was the big thing in fandom and I loved that a lot and the Suki/Zuko came naturally as a part of the ship and also from seeing spoilers about the comics. I like the three of them so much, and the three pairwise ships so much, and the trio all together is just... the best thing.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
Literally everything. I think the characters have great depth and nuance to them and that they come together in a unique way. There’s so much love and acceptance and healing that they need and can find together. Also they all know how to lovingly bully each other and that’s what true love is.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
I think shipping it is pretty unpopular, judging by how rare it is! I have a lot of varied and contradicting headcanons about them so I can’t really say but i DO think Suki should be the little spoon and I know a lot of people disagree with me on that one.

i’ve talked about this fic before so if you’ve been following me for a while you’re probably somewhat familiar with it, but it’s a zimbits soulmate au where you have a specific memory of your soulmate, but it changes based on your decisions and life path. it’s super cute and sweet and my description of my bookmark on ao3 is “i read this on tumblr, i don't even know what fandom it's from or who the characters are or literally any context, but i loved it so much i had to bookmark it” and look where we are now.
2. a fic from an unusual pov
That Boy by @wrathofthestag [zimbits + alicia/bob zimmermann, 2k, T]
from alicia’s pov, this fic is adorable. it’s so charming and the pov is beautifully done. i love how supportive and excited alicia and bob are while trying to hide the fact that they’re losing their shit about jack and bitty getting together. this fic is just fun and refreshing and it’s one of my fav zimbits fics.
3. a comfort fic
dearest partner of greatness by pensgame [nurseydex, 3.5k, T]
(this category is so hard for me to pick for because there’s a lot of fics i could put here) i think i’ve read this fic, oh, probably about a thousand times. when i look through my bookmarks, i usually stop to read this, and it is so soft it makes me want to cry. i would recommend this to any person looking for one of the sweetest, softest nurseydex fics i’ve ever read.

4. a fic you wish could be a movie
we go eyes open, together by @halfabreath [holsom, 3.3k, M]
omfg. this fic. it’s a wild west au that i read a while ago but then i reread a couple of days ago and i’ve just kept opening it, reading it, losing my mind, closing it, and then repeating the cycle. i’m absolutely in love with the style and the tension and the pining and just. it’s so good. if there’s a sequel i will be Looking Respectfully. also i wanted to include a specific moment that i would love to see in a movie, but it’s literally just the whole thing.
5. a fic you have re-read multiple times
once more unto the breach by @ivecarvedawoodenheart [charmer, 1.5k, T]
(this is another category i could fill with so many fics) this is a charmer meet-cute from chowder’s pov and it is one of the cutest fics i’ve ever read. i really love charmer and i think it’s super underrated, and i’ve read this fic an embarrassing amount of times. i highly recommend it. it’s short and sweet!
6. free space
the best sort of plans by @ivecarvedawoodenheart [holsom, 1.5k, G]
holsom meet cute ugly wherein “justin is the falcs’ doctor and adam gets hit in the fact with a puck” (taken from the tags) i love the way the other characters are written (“[Shitty’s] real name is worse,” someone else says. She steps out from behind Eric’s back, dodging both Shitty’s elbow and his exclamation of hey. “I’m Larissa — Lardo — and the guy who just got beaned is Adam.” also “Oh my god, y’all,” Eric interrupts, checking his phone, “shut up.”) and this fic is a fun different first meeting for them! i like seeing the ways the characters are introduced and related in aus like these!
7. a fic you wish would have a sequel
(Gritty Not Included) by @greenishbucket [nurseydex, 1.5k, G]
i know i’ve talked about this fic in my other fic recs post but i. love. it. i think about this au probably like every month and it’s so funny. it’s also applicable to many categories, including but not limited to: a comfort fic, a fic you have re-read multiple times, and a fic that made you laugh out loud. it’s the BELOVED nurseydex au where nursey is inside the gritty costume and dex is both horrified and flustered by him. (absolutely no pressure tho if op doesn’t write a sequel.)
8. a fic with a ship that isn’t your main ship
happily hysterical by @himbolukecastellan [shitty/lardo, 1.7k, not rated but there’s nothing explicit]
(i guess given my url and p much everything about me my “main ship” is nurseydex so that’s what my standards are) this is a shitty/lardo wedding meet-cute and their dialogue/whole interaction in this fic is one of my favorite shitty/lardo interactions i’ve read. i’d read more fics in this universe because it’s really adorable and their back-and-forth is just wonderful.
9. a different meeting au
guard/hit/hammer by @halfabreath [holsom, 2.2k, G]
holsom olympics au!!!!!! i adore this au so much and this is also an au i would read a huge series of because it’s literally incredible. i absolutely love their flirting and how into each other they are, and this fic is just really sweet. (also i genuinely didn’t know biatheletes were a real thing i thought that was just a joke about adam being bi lmao.)
10. a fic that made you laugh out loud
Say my name, say my name by @omgchyeahplease [zimbits, 4.5k, T]
this is a hilarious misunderstanding from poots’ pov, and i saw it in someone else’s bingo which is why i read it in the first place. the misunderstanding and the moment where poots realizes what happened is so funny. the falcs are super well written, and i especially love this exchange: "Dude," Poots tells him, "I need you to not question this, but: do you know my first name?" Doc's mouth opens to answer. And then it hangs there. He's quiet. Then, accusatory, "Do you know mine?" this fic is great and i haven’t stopped thinking about it since i read it.
11. a fic based on a book/movie
and i’m so furious (at you for making me feel this way) by @rocketnebulas [nurseydex, 21k, T]
this is a harry potter au and even though it’s not based on a specific book/movie i’m including it because i can’t get a bingo if i don’t lol. i’ve recced this fic before but it’s a fun enemies to friends to lovers fic and also the ending confession scenes are some of my favorite confessions scenes. this au is really special and i’ve reread it more than once, when i feel like reading something longer.
