Season 13 episode 4 - after two watches
the shots of the case books were so interesting! I tried to capture them but it's hard to really read the entries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
remember? back in season 2 we had another TB family: Julia Masterson and her father, all her siblings and her mother lost to TB. Julia gives birth to her daughter minutes before her father dies, and in the show we don't see them again. In the book though, the story ends with Julia losing her daughter to TB, and that is one of the changes they make in the show that I support. They usually do not give away anything about a characters future, so they would have to bring the family back to show what happened, and I'm alright if they don't. Their story is already sad enough.
Mrs. Stanton and her teenage daughter: She's old enough to be with her Mom during labour and she looks about 16 years old, why on earth should she not be able to at least help with cleaning, if she can't do it on her own? A Poplar girl who can't clean? How did that happen?
war in Nigeria - 1967 until 1970 there was a civil war in Nigeria. I had not learned about it before, maybe someone else who also didn't know got the chance to learn from this episode.
How long did it take from diagnosis til death for Mr. Chidozie? Two days? even if he could have stayed in hospital directly, would it have made a difference? Or was the damage to severe already when he was diagnosed? That was very mean foreshadowing with Nancy telling him that people don't die from TB in this time, "Not here" is what she says, standing in the very spot that he will stand later while coughing up blood and falling down dying.
On a lighter note: I admired the crochet part on this shirt:
Tumblr media
Rosalind standing up for Joyce is superb, their friendship has blossomed and I do hope for more scenes with them together. The way they slow burn all of the romances with the main characters I don't expect any hand holding until the season finale, but I do hope for it.
Millicent is always prepared to take minutes, that's a highly welcome quality. Usually nowadays people will be reluctant to volunteer taking notes in a meeting, at least in my experience, so I find it refreshing that she just does it without being asked to. I noticed that Miss Flannagan refers to Nancy's mother as Mrs. Corrigan. There was no mention so far of Nancy's father, but that implies that her parents were married, and that is a new detail.
Is this the first time Trixie has reason to doubt herself as a nurse? So far she has excelled with helping in all kinds of dire situations and most of the time her patients were fine. I'm curious: Has anyone of you ever seen a placenta in real life? I haven't, but I think it would be interesting and I'd stand there like Sister Monica Joan, marveling at it.
Her enthusiasm about the moon landing is so endearing! The idea of eating something similiar to the astronaut's packets of paste and making sure the TV does not break before the big day - just the right way to go about it.

open: m/f 25+ muse: elise corrigan 27-32 er nurse plot: run with it, most likely your muses keeps showing up on her doorstep when injured or in need of help ! feel free to assume a past connection.
Tumblr media
weekends in the er always tended to be hectic, often leaving elise without so much as a single second to catch her breath. it was a feeling she’d grown used to, a pressure she somewhat craved. from a young age, she’d always preformed better under pressure. perhaps it had to do with the way her parents always expected pristine perfection.
when she arrived back at her apartment, all she truly wanted to do was slip out of her work gear and into a shower where she could wash the day away. however when she rounded the corner she stopped in her tracks upon seeing a familiar face there waiting for her, seemingly in need of some help. arms folding across her chest, she stared, rather coldly, though deep down she knew she wouldn’t turn them away. “you know, me helping you one time wasn’t an open invitation to show up whenever you get yourself into trouble.”

Call the Midwife: Heavens to Murgatroyd! What self-respecting nurse, who wasn’t trying to get a management post, has ever uttered such complete drivel?
In reality (even in 1968) this would have been:
“There are some far too complicated forms to fill in and a few humiliating assessments to go through, but I will do my best to be there for you every step of the way."
Miss Higgins and Phyllis actually highlighted and demonstrated this in the latest CS caring for Cindy.
Thank goodness for Nurse Corrigan, who, like me, I’m sure wished to offer a more direct turn of phrase.
I was so looking forward to CTM introducing Health Visiting as a profession. I have a few nursing friends who have taken this path after many years of general nursing, paediatrics and midwifery training and experience. And I must admit expected the introduction of the role to have been taken a bit more seriously.
I initially thought Trixie would pioneer this new 1960s founded career and then hoped it might be Lucille.
I’m going to give Heidi Thomas the benefit of the doubt on this occasion. I’m going to believe she has chosen someone totally unsuited to introduce this new profession to demonstrate that even in 1968, the NHS didn’t always get it right and people could be promoted well above their skill set even then.
I just think it was such a waste of an opportunity. Shelagh or Trixie (OK, so obviously not Lucille now) with all their experience, but desiring less unsociable hours would have been perfect to introduce this new role.
But hey-ho pathological lying, flag waving, socially awkward, insensitive, obsessive marmalade making nun at your service.

Annie Corrigan, who was my nurse when I had my two hip surgeries and stayed the most cherished of friends, went to Heaven Sunday. I wrote this nomination for her as Daily News Nurse of the Year in mid-July, 2008, while I was home recovering from the first replacement. This is better than any breathless, overwrought remembrance I can cough up. I know she'd be embarrassed that I am reprinting it here, but what's the worst that could happen? She'll get pissed off and come back and yell at me? I would friggin love that....
Eleven days ago, I entered the Hospital for Special Surgery to undergo a hip replacement. Two months before, a friend had recommended I hire a private nurse to help speed along my recovery and get me moving during those first crucial post-operative days. “You need to hire Ann Corrigan,” she said. “ Call now and pray she’s available.”
I did and she was.
You will undoubtedly read entries from those who endured more dire procedures or suffered much much longer. The details of my situation are just details. Hip replacement surgery is common. The resulting pain is common. The issues and milestones to overcome or reach are common. But the care I received during the five days I was with Ann Corrigan is the essence of uncommon.
All of the epithets others will ascribe to their caregivers; attentive, thoughtful, tireless, energetic, encouraging, committed, tender, tough, selfless, compassionate – all the words that will trod across these nominations – they all apply to Ann Corrigan, and to whatever degree comes after the Nth.
But I seriously doubt if there’s a nurse alive who possesses Ann Corrigan’s greatest gift and most healing quality. Humor. Who else would introduce herself over the phone as Nurse Ratchet? Light and dark. Silly and deep. The type of humor that cuts through a patient’s anxieties more swift and sure than any scalpel.
Here was my second phone conversation with her, a week before surgery, when I was crazy with fear about whether she’d forgotten about me.
Me: “So, you’ll take me from the recovery room to my room?”
Ann: “I’ll take you, put you in a bag and throw you in the East River….”
When I stopped laughing, my wife Adrianne, a wonderful caregiver in her own right, said, “She is perfect for you.”
Who could disagree? Who would want to disagree?
When Adrianne and I finally met Ann, she wasted maybe 20 seconds for introductions before pivoting and chasing down a hospital administrator to find out who my anesthesiologist was. Off she went, ever-purposeful. To demand an answer from a doctor, a nurse, a staffer. The family lounge, the pre-op room, the recovery room, my river-view semi-private, the nurses station, the back elevator, the street level pick-up for my trip home. She never stopped, updating me every step, until the steps were my own. My twinkly advocate.  Off she’d go, and I would let myself smile and think, “Everything is okay. All is well.”
If that sounds trite, you don’t know me. And I have not explained the indelible care of Ann Corrigan. I’ll try again.
You can have the best doctors, the friendliest staff, the sunniest room. But to lie in a hospital bed following surgery, any surgery, is to lie alone with the prison break that is the mind’s most desperate thoughts. Something has to be wrong. I’m not doing as well as they tell me. They’ll kick me out of here and I’ll have no place to go…And, as only the mind can do, it will tell you these thoughts make sense. But I was never allowed to hold those notions too long. I would look up, and there would be Annie, big smile, getting ready to hold a pillow over my face, and dramatically end it all.
And I would laugh. Prison break over.
A month ago, in the space of two hours, my father passed away and Adrianne lost her mother. In the middle of my stay in the hospital, my wife showed up for a visit and handed Annie an aqua Tiffany box. I figured she had gone out and bought something nice in appreciation. But when she closed Ann’s hands around the box and said, “You cannot give this back to me,” I knew it was not just some appreciative bauble. My wife had given her a delicate gold and pearl pendant that had belonged to her mother. The next morning, Ann came in and told me she had stared at the pendant before she went to bed and decided “I will wear that when they bury me.”
I know, I know. We have gone far beyond “nursing.” The best definition of success I ever heard was “service plus faith “ If you believe this, as I do, Ann Corrigan is the most successful person you or I will ever know. She is not from this earth. But this Earth has her now, and she must be acknowledged. Thank you for the opportunity.

The role of medication in the recovery of mental health consumers is important. In the context of a multi-site Canadian study on the meaning of recovery, five themes related to medication and recovery emerged from qualitative interviews with 60 consumers. For these consumers, recovery meant: finding a medication that works; taking medication in combination with services and supports; complying with medication; having a say about medication; and living without medication. Findings underlined consumers’ need to communicate their concerns around medication and be supported in developing self-management strategies and more collaborative relationships with providers. The study suggests an expanded role for nursing practice in these areas.
The Importance of Medication in Consumer Definitions of Recovery from Serious Mental Illness: A Qualitative Study
Recovery from serious mental illness has emerged over the past two decades as a world-wide paradigm in mental health, challenging traditional biomedical models of care. Longitudinal studies have challenged century-long beliefs aboutmental illness as an inevitably deteriorative condition, establishing that the course of mental illness is heterogeneous and that recovery often occurs spontaneously (Ciompi, 1980; Fisher, 1999; Harding, Brooks, Ashikaga, Strauss, & Breier, 1987a, 1987b; Harding & Zahniser, 1994; Harding, Zubin, & Strauss, 1992; Markowitz, 2001; McGlashan, 1988; Ogawa, Miya, & Watarai, 1987; Pevalin & Goldberg, 2003; Tsuang, Woolson, & Fleming, 1979). Advances in psychopharmacology have led to better outcomes for persons with psychiatric disabilities, and further opened the way for new recovery-based approaches in psychiatric rehabilitation (Anthony, 2004; Calabrese & Corrigan, 2005). In this context, treatment modalities in mental health have evolved from a traditional illness/stabilization model, to community/rehabilitation models, and most recently to a recovery model, in which mental health consumers play an important role in planning services and advocating for their own needs.
While antipsychotic medication offers consumers new possibilities for stability and the self-management of symptoms (Noordsy et al., 2000), the decision to use, or not use, medication as prescribed is complex for consumers. It is important for mental health nurses to better understand the views of consumers around medication, particularly in relation to consumers’ personal meanings of recovery. This article reports consumers’ opinions on the role of medication drawn from a multi-site Canadian study on the meaning of recovery.
