Sleeving up some teaching decks from… 2017?! Hear me out!
I’m playing with some newer players, and we are playing with almost only Null Signal cards. For our regular meetup, I have brought some Standard decks and even some older FFG “classiques” decks. And as we have played, one other player has asked me to help him step him through systems in the game. To build decks that focus on one approach at a time. As we all know, learning this game can be woefully overwhelming, so I’m happy to help.
I asked for suggestions on how to help him from GLC and somewhat expectedly was told to just use System Gateway decks or perhaps to dive into Project CROW. Both are fine — the former for the newest of new players, the latter for players interested in working up to competitive decks. (The players in my group are neither).
So, this has led me back to TheBigBoy, as many things in this game have over the years. Back in 2016-2017, Abram Jopp developed these teaching decks — based on FFG cards that were current and legal at the time — as tools to help players learn different styles of play. His interpretation of what each faction was about wasn’t perfect but really did capture some important basics — Anarchs want to trash stuff, Criminals want to hit centrals for money; HB likes ICE, Jinteki will tax you with net damage. And so on.
And so, I am sleeving them up. None of these cards are legal anymore other than a few basics (Hedge Fund, Dirty Laundry). But the player I’m helping out doesn’t care. It gives my old cards some kind of new use — and this way, since they mostly aren’t being used, I can keep these decks permanently built. I’m throwing them and some other old decks into a Quiver I haven’t used in years (it housed my old Netrunner cube), and who knows? Maybe I’ll get some old style teaching games in soon.

Alright gonna make a bit of a format for the individual heroes, starting with one of the first "requeues" I thought of:
Mei
New Role: Tank. Health: 500 (100 of which is armor)
Part of an Antarctic research team lost to a freak snowstorm, Mei-Ling Zhou was the sole survivor out of her crew due to a malfunction in the cryo-stasis chambers they hid in to weather their dire situation. However, Mei was not totally unharmed by incident. The malfunction in her pod, while miraculously sparing her life, left her body in a severely weakened state, barely able to survive outside of her stasis pod's life support systems. With the help of the base's survey drone, Snowball, she managed to get a signal out to the recently recalled Overwatch. In critical condition, she was found resting in her pod by the rescue team finally sent to recover her. While stabilized thanks to Tracer's time-rewinding healing powers, Mei was left in a troubled situation in an even more troubled world. With threats like Talon and Null Sector on the rise, and the environmental anomaly that was her original mission still unsolved, she could hardly stand sitting by idly while the world remained in turmoil. With this in mind, Mei approached Winston with an interesting proposition...
Now, Mei has taken to the fight inside an armored cryo-suit, keeping herself safe while also allowing her to defend her allies and those in need, all while Snowball has her back as ever.
Mei's Cryo Suit increases her size significantly compared to her normal appearance, standing at about 6'8" instead of her usual 5'3". Her health has been increased to compensate, and her abilities retain their defensive nature to keep herself and teammates alive.
Her primary fire, now upgraded to Endothermic Cannon, acts very similarly to its current in-game iteration, but now has a bit more of a conical area of effect, making it more effective at slowing down multiple enemies at once. Her secondary fire however is receiving a small damage nerf, from 75 to 60, as to make it less lethal at longer ranges. It retains its critical hit capabilities, as well as the recently added Snap Freeze mechanic to increase its damage in tandem with her primary fire, but this makes it less of a sudden burst of damage on its own while not totally neutering her ranged effectiveness.
Her first ability Cryo-Freeze is now replaced with a slightly different self-defense tool: Cryo Shielding. Putting her arms in a defensive position and covering her entire suit in a layer of dense ice, Mei gains 200 overhealth and immunity to debuffs, cleanses any debuffs she had on activation, and slowly heals while the ability is active, but can't attack and has greatly reduced movement speed for the duration. The ability can be manually cancelled early just like Cryo-Freeze, but if the overhealth is depleted, then the ice armor breaks and the ability ends early.
Her second ability is still Ice Wall, and it's largely the same as before, but to ease some of the frustrations and reinforce its role as a defensive ability, the wall is now much more thin, to the point where it can't be used as a walkable surface when placed underfoot. It still acts as a physical object, but now there's only three wall segments with increased health instead of five.
Finally, her ultimate, Blizzard, is... unchanged. Yeah to be honest, it's already kind of a perfect Tank ultimate. It's a big area denial/crowd control/team setup ult, which is what most Tank ults are anyways. Shame about the name though...
So yeah, that's Mei. The fun part of her rework is the visual overhaul to make her "tank-sized", her abilities are already largely fitting for a tank, but uh. Yeah 5'3" ain't gonna cut it. Actually was surprised to learn the other day she's one of the shortest heroes, that caught me off guard a little. Maybe a little tacky that my solution was just to make her basically Mr. Freeze, but it felt like a logical twist on her backstory like what I had with Reaper... who I turned into basically Venom, okay there might be a pattern here.
Also Mei here is one of the designs I actually want to design the most, the cryo-suit is one of those things I think would make more sense with a visual rather than just an explanation. Again, just saying "it's like Mr. Freeze" gets the gist across, but I'd add a bit more nuance. Mei's a very "cutesy" character with a distinct look to her tech and outfit, so keeping that thematic identity intact while also making her enough a sizeable presence to fit as a tank is something that I think would make for a fun visual.
So yeah, that's Mei's role requeue! Next up on the agenda is the first "new" Damage hero, which... honestly isn't gonna be much of a change of pace for him, outside of the ability to walk.

Mini-Fic on a @hlvrai-twh character that won’t show up for awhile but I really want to talk about. >:))
Part 1 of 2: Just a dream?
======================================
“You need to get some sleep…” Tommy said softly to the stranger.
Said stranger, who now referred himself as “Null” used to be a friend of Tommy’s. But now, whatever part of him that was his friend, was gone. Just a hollow shell of the person he used to be.
Null glanced up, his fingers were intertwined with his hair again. His green eye met with Tommy’s golden ones, but he couldn’t see out of the other. The two were sitting on the ground of “Null’s Room”, which couldn’t be called a room at all as it was almost a huge cave-like structure floating in an endless void. Tommy had invited himself again. He honestly hated being alone, but he couldn’t admit it.
“I don’t like sleeping. It’s too dark and quiet…” he muttered, breaking eye contact with Tommy. He let go of his hair and lay flat on the floor.
“I don’t even dream about good things. And it’s always the same-“ he said and frowned. It was such a specific dream, always ending with a slow and painful death. More like a reoccurring nightmare, if anything.
“You look awful though… your eyes are darker. And you’ve been getting- angry. -A lot more than usual...” Tommy said sitting down.
“The hall was warped yesterday. Looked like someone had crushed it like a can…” he said. “And the tramcar was all bugged out. Your emotions directly effect the state of Black Mesa, y’know.”
He closed his eyes briefly, pretending not to care.
“I know- but you end up fixing it anyway so why should it matter…”
His hair coiled around himself again and he started singing to pass the time.
He turned and glanced back to Tommy, who was gone. Alone again. He moved upright.
That was fine. Tommy only hung out with him because he wanted to “help him”, whatever that meant.
Null recalled the day he met him. Tommy was the one who approached him and asked about “Gordon.”
He didn’t know who that was, and saying that had made Tommy’s nervous smile quickly turn into a concerned frown. The scientists standing behind him also looked disappointed in his answer. Ever since that day, they wouldn’t stop bothering him. What did he do wrong?
Null grabbed his arms, and began glitching out again. He really did need some sleep, but he really hated the dreaming part-
He was more scared of that dream if he was being completely honest. Something about it felt so real and horrible. And he was always on the receiving end, the guy screaming out. He squeezed his eyes shut as an awful feeling crawled through him. Why couldn’t he remember anything, but always dreamt of that?
“Mr.- Null? Are you okay?” Tommy’s voice piped. Null shot up, turning to him and the new figure behind him.
“Oh-I- you brought him.” He huffed standing up slowly. The figure was there when he first met Tommy. He was thin and tall, wearing a blue suit. He remembered that look of slight disappointment as well.
“I was told you were having issues with- your dreams.” He said, in that slow and breathy voice. Null’s hair writhed like a pit of snakes. A small voice was telling him that he couldn’t help him. He stood defensively.
Tommy stood inbetween the two, being the wall that would keep Null from suddenly attacking his dad. It was like a playing a game with a wild animal.
“You said that you couldn’t do anything for me before, why are you here now-?” He stared daggers into him, but got no reaction. Didn’t exactly remember when he said it but remembered his voice stating the matter.
“I didn’t say anything of the sorts...to you, at least…” He stated bluntly. Tommy rolled his eyes at his dad, Signaling that he needed to be careful with his words. He glanced back to Null, still without a change to his expression.
“I want to help you get a good nights rest… Tommy is worried about you.” He said, again slowly. “I’m providing you with a solution to your predicament. Unless you don’t want it- I suppose I could just leave…”
Tommy swerved his head back to Null, who’s look changed. He looked conflicted. He still didn’t trust him.
“I- want… I want help...” He stuttered. That was the first direct thing he’s said to him Tommy thought.
With this action, he took a step back, letting his dad approach Null. He balled his fists and raised his shoulders, trying to make himself big as possible next to the towering thin man.
He placed a hand on his shoulder. Null tensed up. He handed something that looked like a small square piece of paper. A photo.
“I will provide you this…as it’s all I can give.”
He teetered backwards. A name was scrawled on the back. Joshua..?
His stomach twisted, as he fell backwards.

Dragon Ball Super 097
Tumblr media
Live!  At the Null Realm Fairgrounds!  It’s the Tournament of Power!
80 warriors from across the multiverse slug it out!  First prize: a super wish!  Second prize: Death!
Tumblr media
Plus, check out the 60′s Batmobile!  On display at the fairgrounds!
Tumblr media
And don’t forget Kids’ World, where you can meet Fred Flintstone and Spider-Man!
Tumblr media
See KISS in a special live performance!  It’s all here at the Null Realm Fairgrounds!  Exit 103A off of I-69.  Be there!
Tumblr media
Okay, so we finally made it!  We’re here!  The part where Dragon Ball Super finally gets good.  I would say “without any further ado”, but the Grand Minister makes a big entrance and insists on going over the rules one more time.  So it takes about five minutes to get rolling, but this is it.  The Tournament of power will start in this episode.
Tumblr media
“Assembled gods and mortals, the Omni-Kings requested musical accompaniment for this auspicious occasion, and so we have provided it!  You wanted the best, you got the best.  The hottest band in the world!  KISS!
youtube
I needed a gimmick for this thing, a way to raise the stakes, and this is it.  While dozens of cartoon aliens and karate guys battle for their continued existence, I face a different challenge.  Can I liveblog the entire Tournament of Power while also assembling a kickass playlist for the arc?  A playlist made up entirely of KISS songs?  I have a chemistry degree and a one million word fanfic that strongly suggests that I have no limits.
Tumblr media
Anyway, the Grand Minister gives the signal and all these randos you’ve never heard of start fighting.
Tumblr media
I remember during the buildup to thing in 2017, I wondered how Toei would even animate a battle royale like this.  Sure, you can kind of do close-ups of just a few characters on the edge of the stage, but you have to zoom out sometime, and what happens then?  Well, they solved this problem the same way Dragon Ball solves a lot of other problems: With explosions.
Tumblr media
For the next several episodes, everybody who isn’t getting screen time in this show will be firing off huge ki blasts with little to no effect.  And it’s glorious.
Tumblr media
The Grand Zenos are blown away and we’re only a few seconds into this thing.
Tumblr media
As for Team Universe 7, well, Gohan had a game plan, but he can only get half the team to follow it.  Goku, Vegeta, 17, and 18 all rush off to fight, and Frieza decides he can’t pass up a chance to enjoy his one-day pass from hell.
Tumblr media
From the bleachers, the gods wondered why they even bothered trying to prepare for this, which sort of proves my point about Episodes 68-96.  A lot of those episodes focused on everyone talking about this tournament and preparing for it, but most of those preparations amount to nothing.
Tumblr media
For example, there was a scene where Universe 3 showed off an enhanced fighter with special mechanical limbs designed for avoiding elimination and sweeping fighters out of the ring.  But Hit wrecks that dude right off the bat.
Tumblr media
Oh, and Basil too.  Narirama doesn’t get eliminated in this episode, but it doesn’t really matter, since his whole game plan just got shot to hell.  And it only took a few seconds of this episode to introduce the dude and then take him down.  That other episode where he strutted his stuff was pointless.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Basil, he manages to knock another fighter out of the ring.  This is Ryelibeu, one of the few contestants who has wings and could fly under the unique conditions of the Tournament stage.
Tumblr media
But she’s so overwhelmed by the fall that she forgets to use her wings, and so she tumbles down into the abyss until she’s suddenly teleported to the bleachers.  Rumsshi is none too pleased about his team being the first to suffer an elimination, but Gowasu says there’s nothing they can do about it, which is the most Gowasu line ever.  Seriously, why did he even bother fielding a team?  I get the impression Gowasu would enjoy nonexistence.
Tumblr media
At this point, the Grand Minister shows the Zenos how to use their GodPad devices to keep track of the ring-outs.  Nearby, a guy in a Fred Flintstone costumes watches on as they mark off Rylibeu.  Fred is eerily silent, as he isn’t supposed to say anything for this job.  But if he were the real Fred Flintstone, he would surely be saying “Yabba Dabba Doo!  That’s it for Rylibeu!”
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, a bunch of guys try to gang up on Gohan’s squad, but they stand their ground and stay in this thing.
Tumblr media
There’s not much to call here.  It’s just absolute chaos.  Goku really wants to pick up where he left off against Top, but other fighters keep getting in Goku’s way.  When Top finally does fight back, some other guy attacks Top, so Goku’s going to have to accept the opponents that present themselves.
Tumblr media
Goku catches a glimpse of Jiren, but before he can do anything about it, he gets grabbed by Nink, a big dope from Universe 4.  Nink doesn’t seem to be long on smarts, so his plan is to drag Goku to the edge and eliminate himself and Goku at the same time.  The spectators praise Nink for his smarts, as this is a great way to take out a team’s star player and gain an advantage, except, no.  This is a terrible idea.
Tumblr media
Case in point, Goku only seems to be in a pinch because he’s trying to conserve his strength.  So when it looks like he’s doomed, he finally uses Super Saiyan Blue to escape, and Nink winds up eliminating himself for nothing.  The problem with this sort of strategy is that U4 only has ten fighters on the board, so they can’t affort to waste them like this.  Even if Nink’s plan had succeeded, that would only leave Universe 7 in a bad position.  The other six teams would be just fine, and U4 would have to deal with them without Nink’s help.  I don’t think that’s a bargain.
Tumblr media
Also, U4 really had no idea what Goku was capable of, so they never stopped to consider if Goku could be eliminated this way.  It’s a bad enough strategy when it’s guaranteed to succeed, but when it’s a gamble?  It’s foolish.
Tumblr media
But as Goku recovers from that near-defeat, he finds himself surrounded by Universe 9 fighters.  Looks like they’ve decided Nink had the right idea, but this time they’re going to use more manpower to make it happen.  What could possibly go wrong?
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Spider-Man is having a blast.

Really cool new piece of fiction by @netrunnerconduit / @chouxflower for scoops season!
I've been a big fan of where Null Signal Games have taken Netrunner and the newest set Parhelion is already shaping up to be a lot of fun. This new Jinteki ID is so cool, it looks like it will give trap heavy decks another win condition and really reinforces the mind games that made me fall in love with this game in the first place.
Keep it up Null Signal!
