Movie Verse Super Paper Mario AU

Given how long my SPM comic has gotten, and the fact that it's about to become more obvious how much the story deviates from the original (particularly with DK filling the role of Bowser as a hero), I figured now would be a good time to put together a rough outline of the plot points in my AU.

This isn't required reading for my comic, this is just for everyone who wants some extra context and info about how my version of events differ from the original Super Paper Mario.

The story starts out with Mario and Luigi at home. Luigi is talking about how peaceful things have been lately, but unlike in SPM he has absolutely no desire to see this change.

Meanwhile, Mario is trying to pretend he isn't a little bored, and is quietly dropping suggestions that the two of them go off and explore some faraway kingdom to break up the monotony.

Suddenly, Toad bursts in in a panic, and The Mario Brothers are ushered to the castle as Toad hurriedly explains that Princess Peach has disappeared.

The three enter the crime scene: her bedroom shows signs of a brief struggle, but otherwise there is no clue to what might have happened except a letter that reads "If you wish to see the princess again, meet me within Bowser's castle" written in unfamiliar handwriting.

Despite this disappearance not matching Bowser's style at all, Toad and The Mario Brothers have little choice but to believe he has something to do with this. They decide to take the bait.

They enlist the help of Donkey Kong in the rescue mission, figuring it'd be best to have the extra muscle given how likely it is this is a trap (plus the karts are a more reliable form of transportation compared to the warp pipes.)

Despite the addition of a giant gorilla to the team, Mario & co. successfully sneak into Bowser's Castle undetected. The guards don't seem to be on particularly high alert. Stranger still, they can't find the princess anywhere.

When Bowser eventually discovers and confronts them, Mario explains the situation and presents the mysterious letter they found. Bowser is dumbfounded, but insists that whatever happened to Peach can wait until after he kills them.

Before things escalate any further, Count Bleck appears from a portal in sort of a rough recreation of this scene:

Bleck is pleased to see everyone gathered together, and presents the captive Princess "as promised."

Seeing this, Mario immediately leaps to attack the count despite Luigi's desperate plea for him to wait. Like in the game, this causes Mario to get knocked out. Soon after, everyone is sucked away into the dimensional portal except the unconscious Mario.

Mario awoken by Tippi, who– after brief introductions– teleports him away to meet Merlon so they can work together to stop Count Bleck with the help of The Light Prognosticus.

Mario isn't sure how he feels about the idea of prophecies... he doesn't really buy into the idea, despite how much he matches the physical description in the book... but if playing along means Tippi will help him stop Count Bleck and save everyone, he'll do it.

Meanwhile, everyone else awakens to find themselves at Peach and Bowser's wedding. Toad, Donkey Kong, and Luigi do their best to interfere as Nastasia hypnotizes Peach into saying "I Do." Ultimately, Mario's allies fail, and the marriage unleashes the chaos heart.

From there, things continue much like in the game, albeit with a few changes:

As described before, Bowser's role is filled by Donkey Kong. Bowser, in the meantime, aligns himself with Count Bleck to spare his own army from being brainwashed, biding his time until he can usurp the count and gain control of the chaos heart.

Toad is part of Mario’s group too. He isn't mentioned in the light or dark prognosticus, but he is determined to help out nonetheless (and actually does a pretty good job.)

Unlike in SPM, Luigi stays brainwashed the entire time. The first time Mr. L is defeated, Mario and his allies try to grapple him and drag him back to Flipside so Merlon can take a look at him, but Dimentio interfered and "rescued" Mr. L before they could manage it.

O'Chunks, Mimi, Dimentio, and Mr. L work together as a unit after failing their respective attempts to stop the heroes, leading to a couple of instances of all-out battle royale between Bleck's minions and Team Mario. Bleck's Minions, as dysfunctional as they are, don't succeed in stopping the heroes from obtaining any pure hearts despite their combined efforts.

The ending is where things really get switched up:

The main four, having gathered all the pure hearts, start heading to Castle Bleck to destroy the chaos heart.

In the frenzy of everyone preparing for the confrontation, Bowser... knowing that The Dark Prognosticus prophesied that The Man In Green would be the one to bring darkness to all... draws Mr. L away from the group and tries to kill him.

Dimentio, however, saves Mr. L, and working together they successfully incapacitate Bowser enough for Dimentio to send him back to his own dimension.

This rescue– plus the earlier rescue from the clutches of Mario– causes Mr. L to place misplaced faith in Dimentio.

Seeing this, Dimentio comes clean and asks Mr. L to join him in usurping The Count. He lies that Count Bleck has no intention of creating new worlds after destroying the old ones, and offers Mr. L a portion of his own power if he agrees to assist in making sure the universe goes on.

In my version of things, you have to agree to a partnership in order to get implanted with a floro sprout. It's sort of a contractual thing... one can't just plant something in your brain while you're unconscious.

At this point, Mr. L trusts him enough to tentatively agree to his terms and let him in. This is how Dimentio manages to get the sprout seed inside Mr. L's head.

Sure enough, after Mario, DK, Peach, and Toad defeat Count Bleck and his Minions... and just as Tippi begins to get through to the disheartened Blumiere... Dimentio and Mr. L swoop in to swipe the chaos heart and teleport away.

Mario, while rushing to grab his brother, is the only one who manages to get a glimpse of where they teleported to before both Mr. L and Dimentio disappear completely.

He keeps this information to himself as he and Count Bleck's forces hold a truce, tending to the wounded Nastasia and discussing what to do next.

During this meeting, Count Bleck finally answers the question that had been the minds of everyone on Team Mario: why brainwash Luigi? Count Bleck admits the prophecy in The Dark Prognosticus, explaining that he planned on using Luigi to destroy all worlds. What's more, he insists that if they really want to put an end to the chaos heart and the threat it poses, they will have to kill Luigi as well.

This sparks a heated debate. While everyone's shouting Mario says nothing, but silently slinks away from the group to catch up with Luigi and Dimentio on his own.

He knows that the two have merely gone into a chamber deeper within the castle. He knows where to look. If he can just get through to his brother, maybe he can be saved...

Which leads us right up to where my comic begins.

BUG GAME MASTERPOST (AS OF NOV. 2022)

heyhey! this isnt actually anything "official"! i just thought i’d make this for fun and to also spread around bug video games that others, who like the silly little critters as well, might enjoy!

(remember that this is as of nov. 29 2022 so if any game unreleased game on here is now released, it may have been after the date that this was made)

there will be 3 categories: released games, games to be released/are being developed, and honorable mentions

under the released games, i will also be stating if i have finished the game, played them, or simply heard of them (can range from "i have the game wishlisted", "owned but not played", literally only heard of it, etc.)

these bug games will also only list games where most invertebrates are the main focus of the game

other than that, i will be doing the following if possible!:

- i will be providing brief comments for what i think of each game (this is my opinion of each game!! everyone has their own tastes and its alright if you dont agree with what i say! and in no way is my comments for each game professional/an attempt to critique the game in any way ksfhskjd)

- what the gameplay is like (sort of. im not really good at explaining LMAO)

- where you can find these games (game websites may be linked if available instead!)

let's begin!

released games

hollow knight - website; finished - a challenging metroidvania! i personally found this game really fun though i did have to take breaks from the game due to some difficult fights and events lsfhdskj. its definitely the type of game thats fun to replay and see how much you've improved since first playing it! i also think the world building, implied lore, and characters are really well done! (i highly enjoy reading people's analysis posts of this game jksdfkj)

overall, i suggest this game if you enjoy challenging fights and platformers, creative characters, games with deep lore, and/or emotional osts!

bug fables - website; finished - i am emotionally attached to the blue moth. anyways! bug fables is a paper mario rpg inspired game (used to be called paper bugs actually!) and it has charming characters and a good story! this game has a very fun ost and you definitely fall in love with the characters as you learn more and more about them. i find the sidequests very much worth doing and also really fun as it makes you go around and interact with a lot of the npcs in the game! you'll end up seeing that a lot of them have unique personalities and are loveable in their own right :] !!

i suggest the game if you like rpgs, bright characters and settings, bubbly osts, and/or perhaps even learning a dark secret or 2?

bugsnax - website; finished - silly game about catching and eating bug-shaped foods! or food-shaped bugs? food bugs!!!! the horrors. all the bugsnax designs are super fun and some of them are challenging to catch which i think makes the game pretty fun! there's also a bunch of ways that u could catch a bugsnak, its just up to what you can think of! the horrors. the characters are also pretty loveable and they have really neat stories and getting to know them can change the course of the game (just the ending really actually)

highly suggest the game if you enjoy being a little creative with how you perform a task/solving puzzles, characters that are more than what they seem, and silly creative creature designs!

creepy castle - available on steam; played - i have yet to finish this game! but from what i've played, its pretty fun exploring around, reading lore tidbits, and doing the duel minigames! it has a neat retro style and you can change the colors/gui settings if i remember correctly!

i suggest the game if you like rpgs, pixelated style games, and/or minigames!

webbed - website; finished - super cute spider game about saving your bf, swinging around on and crafting webs, and making new friends! did i also mention that youre a spider that shoots lasers from their eyes? webbed is a really charming game that can be completed in just a few hours, even with all the bonus/side things that you can do!

i suggest it if you like pixelated style games, are a completionist, want a shorter game, or just want to be a silly little laser spider!

apico - website; finished - a relaxing game about keeping bees and restoring bee populations! recently they've added an update where you can help repopulate solitary bees and butterflies, and there's a bunch more content that they're planning to develop and release!! the characters have silly bee pun names and have neat dialogue! (they also have pronouns next to their names when you talk to them <3) bee management is not super demanding and with some mods, you can enhance your experience in the game. personally, i have not played with mods, i really enjoy the base game alone! you can also build pretty bases, listen to the relaxing ost, or trap yourself in menu hell!

i suggest the game if you want something that's more laidback (though there is a bit of management), like reading silly dialogue blurbs, want to have a calming ost to listen to, or just wanna do some beekeeping! (proceeds also go to charities that help repopulate native bee populations!)

grounded - website; played - grounded is an open world survival sandbox game (theres also a literal sandbox in the game) where you're a teen that's been shrunken down and must survive in the backyard while finding a way to bring yourself back to your original size. the game actually got a full release in back in september and i have yet to play it because my partner has not been able to play kfhskj. but we have played when it was in early access and it was super fun! there are giant spiders in the game but there's an accessibility setting that allows you to make the spiders more blobby in case you have arachnophobia! other than that it's really fun to go running around the game screaming and crying because the giant mosquito is about to 2-shot you. the base building is also pretty fun with a variety of materials you can make your base from as well as decor. there's also a variety of weapons and armors to choose from and create a build to optimally destroy bugs that are not so friendly. you can also tame some of the passive creatures and become extremely overprotective of them. (im not speaking from experience [lying]) there's actually a storyline to follow as well that helps encourage exploration and progression in the game!

i recommend the game if you enjoy open world sandbox survival games, being scared out of your mind when something you didnt see gets aggro'd on you, making neat bases, and/or strategizing and making builds to suit your playstyle! (i also highly recommend playing with friends!)

space moth dx - available on steam; played - an arcade-like shoot-em-up bullet hell where you play a moth shooting lasers at other laser shooting bugs! this is actually a fairly tough game if you're not familiar with these types of games. i personally have not gotten that far and have yet to play it again kslfhkjs but i think the art is super neat and the gameplay is pretty fun!

i recommend it if you enjoy bullet hells where you literally don't see anything But bullets (there is also space moth: lunar edition!)

bug academy - available on steam and switch; played - a pretty fun physics puzzle game where you control a swarm of bugs! there are different levels with different objectives and a star-based score depending on how well you do in each one! the only reason i havent finished this game is because im a completionist for it and got stuck on a level i have yet to get 3 stars on ksjfhkj. if you ever get this game, i highly recommend playing with a controller!

i suggest this game if you like puzzles, timed/stopwatch levels, trying to see how far you can chuck something, destroying buildings by chucking items, crying when you knock over your tower on accident, and/or being a silly bug swarm

crustacean nations - available on steam and itch.io; finished - woah moth!!! a game about crabs???? yeah they're getting a spot on this list, they're sea bugs to me. but anyways! crustacean nations is a fairly short game with only 3 levels (if i remember correctly) and a sandbox mode. you're essentially commanding a kingdom of crabs and you must defend your sand castle while destroying the other crab sand castles. there's also a pit where you can sacrifice crabs and summon a Big One. it doesn't take too much strategy to win each level but you still need to think about it a bit!

i suggest it if u want to play a brief n short army-building game! with crabs!

kill it with fire - website; finished - a silly game about exterminating spiders. as you progress through the game you get a bunch of new weapons to um. delete spiders with. there's also a bunch of challenges you can do and achievements to get! i've completely 100%'d the game just because it's kinda fun trying to do the challenges and collect all the achievements. the ending is also. a little messed up.

i suggest the game if you're a bit of a completionist, don't like spiders for some reason (i think theyre pretty neat), want to have a stress-relief game (or would it be stress inducing??), or want to see how goofy it gets

social moth - available on steam; heard of - a lot of my mutuals talk about and adore this game! i have not played it yet but it's wishlisted! here's a copy n pasted excerpt from the steam page: "Social Moth is a narrative platformer where you play as a small moth contending with social anxiety. Set in a close-knit community on the forest floor, the game allows the player to explore themes of mental health, relationships, and finding a sense of belonging."

i think i can suggest this game if you have social anxiety/want to understand social anxiety while also playing a puzzle platformer with an endearing art style and characters!

buggos - available on steam; heard of - ive had this game wishlisted for a while! here's a copy and pasted excerpt from the steam page: "Buggos is an RTS Auto Battler where you evolve your army into the perfect bug fighting force. You control a young hive mind bent on world domination, and your swarm will mostly listen to your every beck and call. Guide your swarm’s evolutionary path and breed your best bugs for world domination!"

i think i can suggest this game if you like the idea of world domination and slaughter, want a bug army building game, or enjoy pixelated style games.

i commissioned some bees - available on steam; heard of - did you know there's 10 of these games plus an advent edition?? these games are essentially just where's waldo bee edition and multiply those by like 1000. i've had this game wishlisted for a while but it hasnt been a priority pft. here's an excerpt from the steam page!: "The brief was simple. I commissioned artists to create a fantasy world, and hide as many bees as they can inside it. Now it’s your job to find them all! With 10 art pieces to choose from, and 1000+ bees, you will have a lot of searching to do."

bee simulator - website; heard of - i own the game but havent played it yet. the most ive done is watch markiplier play it hfkjsd. here's an excerpt from the epic games page: "The hive awakens as the sun's first rays warm the horizon. It's time to test your wings, receive orders from the Queen and begin your first mission. And that's just the start of your adventures. Humans want to cut down the tree that holds your hive, so your fate – and that of the whole swarm – rests on your tiny shoulders!" i think this game is more of an educational game aimed towards families and children but who knows! maybe some of you will enjoy it too?

i think i can recommend this game if you like bees :) and doing minigames/tasks/challenges!

black widow: recharged - website; heard of - an arcade shooter where you play a spider! i own this game but havent played it yet. here's an excerpt from the site: "Aim for a high score in the old school arcade mode and earn bragging rights with your name at the top of the leaderboard. Or test your skills and rank on the boards in one of 30 intensely creative challenges, which twist the gameplay in new and exciting ways. Collect cash from downed enemies to charge a powerful web blast, or pick up one of a dozen new power-ups including explosive blasts, spread-shots, and fear, trapping all enemies in your web. Every mode and level is playable in local co-op mode with a friend."

centipede recharged - website; heard of - i've played centipede in an actual arcade but it was not this specific game so i dont know if the experience is around the same. (i own it but havent played it) centipede recharged is similar to black widow: recharged in terms of an arcade shooter as well as the description given

empires of the undergrowth - website; played - an army building game about ants! in the "main zone", you're an experimental ant species that seems to be able to take on traits of many other ant species. you play levels as real-life ant species and try to grow your colony and complete objectives that are given to you. the rewards you get from these levels are used to upgrade your lab species and after completing a set of levels, you'll be given a challenge using the lab species. i havent completed this game due to being stuck on one of the challenge levels fhksjd but i think its kind of fun

i suggest this game if you like army building games (similar to starcraft or warhammer) and the idea of making a huge ant colony and competing against other colonies

yoku's island express - available on steam; heard of - there's actually a lot more places where you can purchase yoku's island express (epic games, switch, gog, etc.) but their website is down so i decided to resort to linking the steam page. i currently own the game but have not played it! it's a game about you being a tiny postman exploring around islands, delivering packages, while also making new friends and saving the islands where you reside. it's a pinball platformer adventure game and it seems really cute and fun to play!

earthtongue - available on steam and itch.io; heard of - this game actually just got recommended to me after this was posted! earthtongue is a game where you watch over a world inhabited by fungi and bugs. here's an excerpt about the game!: "You will spend most of your time watching life grow and eat each other to survive. Your subtle nudges will be required to maintain the balance of this world, but it can handle itself much of the time. Player given goals are limited, aside from maximizing the health of your ecosystem. You may choose to try to create a fungal garden to your liking. You may try your best to breed as many beetles as you can. You might use those beetles instead as food stock for the mantises. You might instead just peacefully watch the story of Earthtongue unfold on its own."

stonefly - website; heard of - stonefly is an adventure game where you control a bug-shaped mech! here's an excerpt from the site: "Harness the wind and soar through the wilderness of Stonefly, a chill and tranquil action-adventure game about self-discovery, legacy, and belonging. Glide your mech strategically among beautiful flora and dangerous fauna, confronting hungry bugs, adventures, and memorable characters."

to be released/in development games

hollow knight: silksong - website - the game that the hk fandom says doesn't exist and is actually a collective fever dream (it is 100% a real game, we're all just very excited for it to come out! /srs) the game is going to be like hollow knight (a challenging metroidvania) but this time the player plays as a new protagonist, who was a character in the first game, hornet! this game will have a new world to explore, new mechanics to master, new faces to meet, and much more.

bugaboo pocket - website - a really cute pixelated game about raising bugs! an excerpt from the site: "Bugaboo Pocket is a digital pet game where you raise bugs from egg to adult. How you care for your pet influences their personality and impacts the ecology around them. Inspired by real bugs!"

another crab's treasure - website - a game where you play as a hermit crab! you use trash in your surroundings as your shell and each "shell" provides a different effect that affects how you play the game! an excerpt from the site: "Another Crab’s Treasure is a soulslike adventure set in a crumbling underwater world. As Kril the hermit crab, you’ll need to wear the trash around you as shells to withstand attacks from enemies many times your size. Embark on an epic treasure hunt to buy back your repossessed shell, and discover the dark secrets behind the polluted ocean." (i recommend checking out their tiktok, some of the posts there are extremely funny)

dewdrop dynasty - steam page - a pixelated style metroidvania where you play as a gunslinging bee who lost their wings and finds themselves trapped in an unknown place. you'll meet interesting characters, challenging enemies, and also learn new skills and mechanics as you play the game. goodgis, dewdrop dynasty's dev, also posts a bunch of videos on youtube regarding game development tips and devlogs. (that's how my partner knew about the game and introduced it to me) a fun and charming game that will have mysteries to discover!

i am a caterpillar - dev's twitter - a game where you play as a caterpillar!: unbothered. slimey. thriving. in your moss. squelched up. wriggling. an excerpt from one of the dev's tweets!: "Become the squidgy lil' caterpillar you've always wanted to be, on a quest to stop your own metamorphosis. Crawl & wriggle all over anything in your path and explore the canopy."

a webbing journey - website - a cute 3D game where you play as a spider! you'll explore the world, making webs and slinging around on them. you'll also meet some friendly faces to talk to and do quests for them! an excerpt from the site: " You control a little spider equipped with all the typical spider abilities and a little bit more as you travel through various stunning islands searching for the most exotic flowers for your spider date. Along your journey you meet other spiders and animals who provide additional side stories and quests which challenge your spider abilities."

invertipets - dev's site / toyhou.se - a petsite game being made by @shadybugdev where you take care of bugs and bug-like pets! there's not much on it publicly available yet other than some pet concepts (which can be viewed through the toyhouse link!) but it's something to look out for! (the picture provided is some of the pets and their possible morphs!)

honorable mentions

an isopod game(?) being made by riley neville (part of sbuggames/made webbed) - this "game" has not actually been announced to be a game that will be published but it looks neat!

a worm game(?) being made by riley neville - same thing as the previous one!

that should be all i know! most of these games, if not all, are made by indie devs so i highly suggest checking them out and supporting them if you can!

I’m not going anywhere

As soon as Princess Peach wakes up she’s immediately aware of how hot she is. She rubs the sleep out of her eyes and removes her blanket from her body gently, feeling an ache in her arms as she does so. She sits up slowly and looks around her room, wincing at the sheer brightness of it. It certainly isn’t hot, if anything she should be cold. It was the middle of winter, she can see the snow cascading down one of her windows slowly, leaving behind white snowflakes. She can already hear the townspeople chatting and children playing in the snow from here. A small smile makes its way onto her face and she manages to get out of bed finally. She’s a little wonky on her feet, but perhaps she’s just tired. She’d had a late night last night, staying out to help Mario and Luigi put some decorations in the town square. The brothers had introduced Christmas to the Mushroom Kingdom last year and it was such a blast. As soon as they told her about it she immediately knew she wanted to celebrate it every year in her kingdom.

She definitely knows more this year than she did last year, thank god. She knows now that she needs to get presents for Mario and Luigi. She had been under the impression that the gifts were only for the children, until Mario had pulled out a present wrapped in pink wrapping paper, her name on it in sparkly letters.

“I didn’t tell you because Christmas isn’t just about the gift giving,“ Mario had explained upon being questioned. “It’s about being around the people you love.” She had gone quiet when he said that.

Peach sighs, moving her messy hair off her face as she heads to her bathroom. Christmas was only three weeks away and she still hasn’t gotten all her Christmas shopping done. She’s finding it very difficult to get free time with her schedule as full as it is lately. It usually dies down around winter time, but it’s been a busy one this year. Between all the meetings and Bowser’s kidnappings, she can never catch a break. Though she will admit the kidnappings do stop around Christmas time; Peach likes to imagine Bowser frantically shopping for all his koopalings, rushing around and wrapping presents. The thought makes her laugh to herself.

Peach manages to make it to her shower, hoping the warm wake up will make her feel better. She turns on the hot water and lets it run down her shoulders, shivering as it hits her skin. Despite the water being pretty hot, she shivers through her entire shower and can barely lift her arms up to wash her hair. After a few minutes of pain she manages to wash the remaining conditioner out, switching off the water and stepping out. Her entire body aches and she’s starting to get the hint now. It seems she’s fallen ill. Is this something she would mention? Absolutely not. She still had a kingdom to rule and no one could step in for her, especially on such short notice. She takes a deep breath and steps out of the shower, grabbing her towel and burying her face in it, sighing dramatically.

Peach gets dressed in her usual pink gown and heads down the stairwell, ignoring the throbbing of her head as she descends it. She meets with Toadsworth in the lobby, greeting him and taking the papers he hands her. She looks over them but the words just make her brain feel fuzzy.

“Your highness, are you alright?” He asks instantly, looking to her with concern. That wasn’t out of the ordinary though, he always looked at her like that. It was his job as her adviser after all to well, advise, but also to check in on her too. “You’re quite pale, princess.” He adds.

“Yes, I’m alright,” She assures, smiling at him briefly. “Just had a late night.” Which is true, she did. He simply nods and they head off to the town hall, preparing for their meeting. It should only go for about an hour, so she should be fine. Even if her legs throb as she makes each step towards the building.

As the hour and a half mark hits, she feels herself start to feel much worse. Her head is still pounding, her throat hurts, and she’s still shivering. She’s trying to keep it under wraps but Toadsworth keeps looking in her direction with those beady eyes, studying her closely. She knows as soon as this meeting is over she’s screwed. She’s been discovered. Peach knows he’s no idiot, he’s known her since she was a baby, practically raised her as his own, she couldn’t hide anything from him even if she tried.

“Princess,” Sure enough, here he comes. “I don’t think you’re well, I advise you to go back to the castle and rest immediately.” He orders. Peach rubs her eyes as they’re starting to get watery from being out in the sun, which doesn’t really help her case.

“It’s just a cold Toadsworth, I can handle it.” Peach assures, even though her head feels so heavy it might just fall off her body. Toadsworth gives her one final glance before sighing to himself; she wasn’t going to go down easily. He knows that by now. She’s as strong willed as he is. He just hopes she won’t come to regret her stubbornness later on.

The next few days she uses the same excuse with him and everyone else. That it’s just a simple cold and she’ll get over it soon. Toadette noticed her watery eyes and red nose, her sneezing and coughing, the whole lot and even offered to finish off all the tasks for the day, but the Princess politely declined. Toadsworth had even threatened to call Mario which Peach had gotten quite annoyed about. The man was finally relaxing after saving her for the millionth time and the last thing she wanted to do was bother him, she’d done that enough. He’d had to travel to the moon to save her for gods sake.

Plus, she didn’t want him to see her like this. Her crush on the man was likely incredibly obvious, and Mario seeing her like this would just utterly embarrass her. It doesn’t help that he had proposed to her and she had told him no, which probably gave him the wrong impression. She had later explained to him that she had said no because he was trying to compete against Bowser and simply left it at that. They had mended their friendship after that. She doesn’t want to ruin what they have now by annoying him and forcing him to take care of her like he always does. It isn’t fair to him.

So she carries on with her royal duties, day and night. She can feel herself getting worse with each passing day, but she pushes through it. She was the princess after all, she had obligations. She couldn’t just curl up in bed, though the thought of her bed and its promised oblivion almost makes her collapse right where she stands. She just has to keep going. She’ll go until she drops if that’s what it comes to.

Peach wakes up drenched in sweat. It’s the most disgusting she’s felt in a long time and she immediately sits up in her bed. She is not getting better at all, and she briefly wonders how she’s gotten so sick. No one else is sick in the entire kingdom; she knows she’s just been to the moon to be fair, but she was fine when she got back. That was weeks ago.

It’s now a week and a half until Christmas and she’s just praying she’s better in time for the festivities. She tries to get up out of her bed and her head immediately spins, causing her to hold her temple and sit back down. She waits for the room to stop spinning before attempting to get up again. The same thing occurs and she sighs shakily.

“Oh goodness,” Peach mumbles aloud, shivering and pulling the blankets up. “This can’t be good.” Her mind debates for a few minutes before she decides to just ask Toadette and Toadsworth to take care of royal duties for the day. She finally gives up. She squints in the bright light as she moves her hand over to her nightstand, frantic hand looking for her phone. Her hand knocks down a bunch of items off her nightstand but eventually she does find the phone, bringing it close to her face so she can see what numbers she’s pressing. Every press to the phone makes her digits hurt even more; she feels so weak she can barely hold the phone. She manages to phone Toadsworth’s number and shakily hold the phone to her ear. She wishes the room would stop spinning, it would be so much easier to concentrate.

“Good morning princess, everything alright?” Toadsworth greets, and she can tell by his voice he knows what she’s going to say. Peach shuts her eyes at how loud he sounds of the phone volume and swallows her pride, admitting her weakness.

“I suppose,” Peach answers quietly, placing her free hand on her temple again and rubbing it in small circles. “I do think I need some bedrest today, are you able to handle the royal duties?” She asks. She feels so embarrassed, like she was giving up. Giving in. “I’m sorry if that’s too much.”

“Not a problem dear, I’m just glad you’re finally resting, even if took a whole week,” He assures, and she can practically feel his smile. “Toadette and myself will handle the duties for today, we’ll come and check on you very soon.” He promises. Peach nods, even though he can’t see it through the phone. She appreciates that he didn’t do the whole ‘I told you so, you should’ve listened to me’ shtick.

“Thank you Toadsworth.” Peach says quietly, hanging up the phone and sinking into her bed miserably. She decides that taking a nap will be a good start, so she does that. She lays down comfortably and allows her eyes to shut. Her head feels like a balloon with too much pressure inside, like she could pop at any minute. Thankfully she falls asleep a few minutes later, escaping the pain for a a while. Toadsworth comes in to check on her a few hours after her call and she’s still fast asleep, snoring lightly. He smiles a little to himself, deciding to keep that bit of information to himself as he exits her room.

The next few days pass and Peach doesn’t even call Toadsworth, he just assumes she’s unwell when he doesn’t hear from her by the late morning and carries on with the royal duties. He brings her some food and extra tissues if she needs and makes sure she’s actually getting better. So far there has been no improvement and he feels it’s because she fought it for so long. Then again, he has no idea how human flus work, he’s trying his best.

Toadette is tasked to check in on her today since Toadsworth is preoccupied with a town meeting. Most of the questions were about the princess’ health anyway, her people were starting to worry. Toadsworth is quick to ease their worries however, always the reassurance they need.

Toadette approaches the woman’s room at the top floor and knocks timidly on the door. “Princess?” She calls. When she doesn’t receive an answer she opens the door slowly, peering in. “Oh my,” Toadette lets out, feeling the warm air hit her face instantly. “Oh Princess, aren’t you hot?” She asks, approaching the woman gingerly. The princess in question is under her blankets shivering, surrounded by used tissues.

“I’m freezing.” She assures, and Toadette slowly moves a hand towards her head, jolting it back before she even touches it. She was practically steaming. The young toad had no idea what to do.

“Is there anything you need?” Toadette asks gently, looking to her princess sadly. She’d never seen her so sick before, she was starting to panic internally. She knew this job was tricky but she didn’t expect Peach to be sick with something they seemingly had no cure for.

“Mario..” She mumbles, sniffling into her pillow helplessly. “I need Mario.”

Toadette is on the phone to him as soon as she leaves the room. He tells her he’ll be there as soon as he can. She can feel the relief spread through her at the acceptance of his help.

Mario arrives in just under ten minutes, waiting outside for Toadette to escort him up to the castle with a small bag in hand. He follows her quietly up the many stairs to Peach’s bedroom, where she says her goodbyes before leaving him to it. Mario doesn’t even bother to knock; usually he would, but she knows he’s coming. She had asked for him after all. He enters the room and closes the door behind him, and the lump in the bed doesn’t even move a muscle. He spots her bedroom bin overflowing with tissues, some tossed carelessly on the floor next to it while others were hardly even close. He approaches her figure gently, sitting on the bed next to her.

“Hey Princess.” He gets her attention quietly, making her open her eyes. She was still shivering under all her blankets, sweat dripping off her forehead.

“Mario?..” She croaks unpleasantly, blinking a few times before turning to face him, wincing as she does so. He moves some sweaty hair off her forehead, secretly thankful he’s wearing gloves for a brief moment. He then takes one off and presses it to her head, almost pulling back at how hot she is.

“You’re burning up,” He tells her. “Well.. you might already be fully burned,” He puts his glove back on and removes the big duvet from her body, causing her to curl up. “Do you have a thermometer?” He asks her.

“A what?” Peach responds, and suddenly it becomes clear to Mario why she hadn’t been getting better. The Princess, along with her advisers had no idea how to combat a human flu. It’s why she’s been getting worse rather than better.

“I figured. Luckily I came prepared,” He assures, opening the bag he had brought with him and pulling out a thermometer. He holds it up to her head and she jumps at the beeping sound it makes. “It’s okay, it’s just taking your temperature.” He soothes. It beeps a few times and he looks to it, eyes widening. Peach groans as she leans up, looking to it.

“It’s red.. is that good or bad?” She asks, feeling quite helpless. Mario stands up off the bed and opens her linen closet, searching for a face washer.

“Bad,” He answers, heading into her bathroom. Peach frowns to herself, starting to panic. He didn’t sound upset, but he didn’t sound pleased either. She just hopes he isn’t mad at her. He returns with the face washer which he’s now wet with water, before taking off her other blanket, leaving her with just her single pink sheet. “I’m sorry Princess, you’ll have to take your layers off.” He admits apologetically. Peach looks surprised for a moment before sitting up, waiting for Mario to turn his head before taking off her sweatpants and long sleeve, leaving her in her singlet and panties. She quickly finds some shorts to put on before sliding the sheet back over herself, giving Mario the all clear to turn back around. He places the face washer on her forehead gently, instantly making her shiver from the sheer coldness of the material.

“It’s so cold..” She states the obvious, bringing the sheet up to her neck to try and preserve what little heat she has left. Mario frowns, sitting beside her and moving more of her sweaty bangs from her face.

“I know. It’ll help bring your fever down,” He assures. They sit in silence for a moment, nothing but the sound of Peach’s sniffles filling the room. It must get to him after a minute, because he’s speaking up. “This is all my fault,” Mario confesses.

Peach looks to him utterly confused. “What?” He takes off his hat and twists it in his hands anxiously, looking into her glassy eyes. He pans down to her bright red nose and cheeks, feeling even more guilty.

“I shouldn’t have taken you to Brooklyn,” He frowns. “Especially during the winter.” Now it’s Peach’s turn to frown. He was referring to when he took her and Yoshi to Brooklyn to see a snow day in his world. They had made snowman (snowtoads really), and had a snowball fight. They’d finished that day with Mario showing the two how to make snow angels. Peach absolutely loved it, but she briefly wonders why that day being the cause didn’t occur to her when she had first fallen ill.

“It’s not your fault, Mario,” She assures, her voice sounding pretty stuffed up now that she has spoken a full sentence to him. “I had the best time learning about your traditions.. My immune system just isn’t used to your world yet, I guess.”

Mario smiles a little, and Peach briefly wonders if that can cure her, because it certainly feels like it can. “Well.. I promise the next tradition I tell you about will be warmer…” He thinks for a moment. “Maybe another trip to Isle Delfino is in order.” He offers.

“As long as your clone doesn’t come back and I don’t get taken by a giant turtle again, it sounds like a plan,” Peach laughs, which just makes her cough. Mario still grins at her; he’d called Bowser a turtle in passing and it kinda just stuck.

“Good point. Maybe we’ll go somewhere in my world. You like snorkelling?” He asks genuinely. She scrunches her nose up at the word as if he’s joking. “It’s a real thing!” He assures. “You put these funny looking goggles on that let you see underwater while you swim and this mouthpiece that lets you breathe. You can see all kinds of things, even turtles.” Peach giggles at this.

“I like the sound of that.” She smiles. Mario takes the face washer off her forehead and feels it, sighing in relief.

“Your temperature is dropping,” He tells her happily, placing the face washer back on her head. “I’m gonna go get you some medicine from my place, I should still have some leftover from when Luigi wasn’t well, are you gonna be okay?” He asks.

Peach frowns. She knows she shouldn’t be dramatic, as she knows that medicine will get her feeling better, she just doesn’t want Mario to leave. She just nods, and he assures he’ll be back as soon as possible. She takes a deep breath and closes her eyes, trying to focus on waiting for Mario to come back instead of the pounding in her head.

By the time Mario returns she’s fast asleep, snoring quietly. He’d never heard her snore before and he immediately decides it’s the cutest thing he’s ever heard. He quietly approaches her bed and places the medication and cup of water on her nightstand, ready for her to have when she woke up. He isn’t sure how she’d feel if he stayed in her room while she was sleeping. She may find it creepy, so he ultimately decides to go. Just as he turns to leave her room he feels Peach grab his arm with what little strength she has left, trying to pull him closer.

“Mario..” She mumbles sleepily, eyes hazy and a frown evident on her features. “Stay.” She begs. He smiles sheepishly and takes his shoes off, sitting beside her on the bed. She sniffles, scooting closer to him so her body is pressed against his.

“You should take your medicine before you sleep,” Mario reminds her quietly. Peach grumbles in response and Mario grabs the tablets off her bedside table, handing them to her along with the cup of water. She cautiously takes the two tablets and swallows them with the water, handing the cup to Mario once she’s finished so he can put it back on her nightstand. “That should kick in soon.”

“Thank you..” Peach mumbles out her gratitude, seemingly exhausted.

“Always, Princess.” Mario answers easily, because it is. It’s an easy thought. If his Princess needs him, he’ll be there. If she needs him to clean her dirty tissues off the floor and teach her about the human flu, he will. If she wants him to take her snorkelling on the Sunshine Coast, he will. He’ll do anything she asks him to do, and he’ll do anything for her even if she doesn’t ask. She had opened her home to him and his brother, her kingdom. She had given the brothers a place they could call home, and he’d never be able to repay that kindness. He could certainly try though.

“Will you lay with me?” She asks shyly and Mario gives in easily, laying down beside her and removing the face washer from her forehead. It isn’t a pleasant thing to sleep with. Peach moves closer to him once again, leaning her head on his chest cautiously. She isn’t sure if she’s crossing a boundary here, she’s unsure where they stand after the moon incident. She feels one of his hands start running through her hair and she closes her eyes, getting comfortable. “Don’t go.” She lets out, wrapping an arm around his torso as if to keep him in place. Little does she know he has no intentions of moving.

“Don’t worry Princess,” He assures, pressing a gentle kiss to her head and wrapping an arm around her shivering figure. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Guys, please listen to "Kronos Unveiled" from The Incredibles because that song gave me the angst Bowuigi idea that I'm about to share with you all.

(And just a quick heads up, if some of the ideas look familiar, it's because I took inspiration from this one-sided Bowuigi angst post I made a while back and The Secret Alliance Bowuigi WIP idea I talked about back in early April.)

(Adding a cut here because this might be long otherwise.)

Okay, so after countless failed attempts of marrying Peach, Bowser decides to change his evil ways and become a good guy. Happy to see that Bowser is finally changing his ways, Luigi starts visiting Bowser to help him on this good path journey, which results in them becoming good friends (and maybe eventually become a couple, but I'll go over that more at the end). As Peach sees Luigi and Bowser's friendship (and sees that Bowser actually wants to become a better Koopa), she asks Bowser if he wants to sign a peace treaty with her as a way to bring their two kingdoms closer together, which Bowser 100% agrees to because this is something he also wants to do.

However, not everyone is accepting of Bowser's newfound kindness.

So at first, Mario was very wary of this new version of Bowser because he was worried that Bowser was going to take advantage of Luigi's kindness and use him to get closer to Peach and the MK. However, after some long 1-on-1 talks with both Luigi and with Peach, he starts to realize that Bowser has actually been telling the truth and genuinely wants to stop the conflicting war between the two kingdoms.

That is, until people started to go missing.

Now at first, it wasn't very noticeable. Mario figured that all the different royals he needed to talk to were just taking a vacation or were sick and couldn't reach back out to him. However, after noticing that his close friends and very important people (i.e., Yoshi and Rosalina) were missing, that's when Mario realize that something was up.

So after about a week or so, Mario tells Peach and Luigi that he's going to visit Daisy for a week just to catch up. They haven't seen each other since the Strikers Tournament, so Mario figured that it would be a good time to travel to Sarasaland to see what the spunky and out-going princess is up to.

At least, that's what he told Peach and Luigi.

In actuality, Mario is instead going to secretly visit Professor E. Gadd. The reason? Mario needs to borrow an invention from E. Gadd that'll either help him break into Bowser's Castle and/or take pictures of what's going on behind closed doors at Bowser's Castle (as a way to prove to Peach and Luigi that Bowser's not as good as he saids he is).

And E. Gadd agrees to let Mario borrow an invention.

So after about a day of travel, Mario quietly breaks into Bowser's Castle without trouble and doesn't immediately see anything suspicious. Of course, this doesn't stop Mario from sneaking around the castle as he has this really gut-wrenching feeling that Bowser just has to be up to something.

And this is where the "Kronos Unveiled" scene really starts to come into play.

So similar to the starting scene, Mario finds this big computer in a huge and dark room, so he walks up to it. He sees that he needs a password and after guessing the password (Koopa), he has access to all the secret files of Bowser's Castle. After clicking on the "Royals" option (this would replace the "Supers" option from the movie scene), Mario discovers something really horrific.

A lot of royals have died.

No, a lot of royals have died because Bowser killed them.

The 7 kings from Super Mario Bros 3, Prince Peasley, even Rosalina and the Star Spirits from Paper Mario, Bowser has invaded dozens of lands and murdered those rulers of the said lands in an effort to make his airships more powerful.

But his plan doesn't stop there.

After some research in the computer, Mario discovers that "Operation Koopa" consists of 3 phases.

Phase 1: Bowser absorbs the power of the Super Star (like how Mario and Luigi did at the end of the Mario movie) after he stole it from the Star Spirits.

Phase 2: Bowser travels to the Mushroom Kingdom in the middle of the night with his Doom Ship (this would take place after he signs the peace treaty with Peach).

Phase 3: Bowser uses the Doom Ship (and himself since he absorbed the power of the Super Star) to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom (in an effort to force Peach to either marry him or he'll kill her).

And what's really interesting about this idea is that I have two different approaches on how this all can go.

Idea 1: Everything that I just told you guys is all Bowser's idea. Like this Bowuigi angst idea I brought up in the beginning of this post, from point A to point Z, Bowser is very willing to play the long-con if it means that Peach and/or the MK will finally become his.

Idea 2: Bowser is not the one in control here, but it's actually King Boo who's making Bowser do all of these bad things (and this approach wouldn't be like the Bowuigi Secret Alliance idea I also mentioned at the beginning of this post (although, you can kind of make it like that if you really wanted to). I mean more in the sense that King Boo would full-on possess Bowser in order for him to help him (King Boo) reach his ultimate goal of taking over the entire world.

Personally, I like idea 1 a little bit better, but the pure idea of King Boo being the one who's pulling all of the strings also sounds both really intriguing and really angsty (like no joke, there's this one idea I have in regards to the E. Gadd & Peach scene where Boolossus (or some other important Boo besides King Boo) is possessing E. Gadd throughout that entire scene and Peach never realizes/notices.)

The Best Games of 2004 | 20 Years Gone

A long time ago, in the late 00s, I REALLY wanted to be a Video Games Journalist. I was writing and podcasting for local tech website Techpedition and we even worked our way to E3 2009. I was able to parley my mask of legitimacy into getting a couple dozen free games from publishers, but was never able to break into the "business".

It's fine, I've still paid super close attention to the industry and have a handful of podcasts that I follow. One thing that I missed out on was creating the end-of-year best-of lists that have become so popular with pundits of video games. Partially because I didn't have a big enough outlet for it to matter, but more so because I didn't have the resources to play all the relevant games within their release years to render a judgment.

I typically get around to playing all the games I'm interested in, but it usually takes me about 2-5 years. It's partially a time thing but mostly a budget thing. So, what this is, is the beginning of my trip through the last 20 years of video games. I'll be creating a top 10 list for the last 15 years and going forward, I'll post a new list every year of the top 10 from 5 years ago. That is assuming I keep up with it, lol.

These will be written as if they were published the year of the list, so there will be no references to future games or better sequels, etc. Let's get started. Travel with me back to the year 2004 which, news flash, is now 20 years ago.

#10 - Metroid: Zero Mission

Not only is Zero Mission a solid remake of the classic original Metroid, but it succeeds at both making it feel modern and ultimately super-playable, which isn't something you can say about the old NES game.

#9 - Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within

Much more agro than its predecessor, The Warrior Within builds on the foundation of the standout Sands of Time and smooths out a lot of the jagged edges, specifically in the combat department. Your mileage will likely be tied to how much you like Godsmack-itude, but POP2 is a great sequel.

#8 - Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Paper Mario was a weird novelty and shadow follow-up to Super Mario RPG, but despite its clear creative direction, it was missing the character needed to fully succeed in the RPG space. The Thousand-Year Door has character in spades, and it will charm your staples off.

#7 - Sly 2: Band of Thieves

Making Sly Cooper into an open-world heist game took what was a decent platformer to the next level. Where the first game was a solid third place behind Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter, Sly 2 makes the argument that it's a top-tier Sony series. Each mission matters and each of its characters is special.

#6 - Pikmin 2

Better than its predecessor in every way, Pikmin 2 shows the first game's primary game loop wasn't a fluke. The addition of Louie, as a second playable character who's played simultaneously with Olimar, adds a heightened level of stress, making each recovery mission a manic exercise in task prioritization.

#5 - Halo 2

Is Halo 2 as impactful as Halo: Combat Evolved? Not really. The story isn't stellar, and the surprise Arbitor missions are little more than a pallet swap, but dropping the proven Halo action onto the Xbox Live service is game and industry-changing. I'm not a multiplayer guy, but I enjoyed the single player and I recognize how important Halo 2's success is to gaming as a whole.

#4 - Mario vs Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong '94, on the Game Boy, is secretly one of the best games of 1994. Mario vs. Donkey is Nintendo fleshing out that idea and making an addictive puzzle platformer. It starts out simple and sweet and ends hard and satisfying. Had this been the direction the Donkey Kong franchise went rather than Rare's DK Country series, SNES games may have had a very different trajectory.

#3 - Spider-Man 2

Licensed games always suck. Movie tie-in games always suck. Spider-Man 2 is an anomaly on top of an anomaly and it's 100% powered by the Swinging mechanic Treyarch built for the web-crawler. It feels SO good to swing around NYC that it's hard to believe Spider-Man as a character wasn't created specifically for video games.

#2 - Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal

R&C3 is undoubtedly a great game, I'd even say damn near perfect, but its placement this high on the list may seem a bit weird. That's where my opinion comes in. I'm a huge 3D platformer fan, it's probably my favorite genre. With that factored in with the depth and polish of this shiny new Ratchet game, #2 on the list doesn't seem so outlandish.

#1 - Half-Life 2

There's always talk of "importance" when it comes to works of art. Abbey Road is important, Michelangelo's David is important, and even A Clockwork Orange is important. Video Games, a medium that's still technically in its infancy, has only a handful of important titles. I'd say Half-Life 2 fits the bill. It's use of physics as a gaming mechanic is as technically impressive as it is clever. It's an FPS but it's not "just an FPS" and the mood and tone established throughout are as compelling as that of Blade Runner. Half-Life 2 is a stunner that will be studied for years.

Notable Omissions:

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - I've never liked GTA games. I respect their scope and ambition, but when it comes to playing them as games, GTA titles just stink.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - I've never gotten into the Metal Gear games and the more people yell at me to play them, the less I want to.

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap - This one technically came out in North America in 2005. So, with me being from the US, It will hit next year's list.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords - I might end up playing this one eventually, but as of 2024 I have not.

HAIIII YES I spent like. All day yesterday downloading different roms and emulators 😭 I prolly shouldn’t talk about this so loudly lest Nintendo come to my house and snap my neck for even uttering the world ‘dolphin’ but stealing shit is REALLLLY easy. But you didn’t hear that from me.

I might’ve mentioned this before but we didn’t have any consoles/games growing up so there’s actually a lot of Mario games that I’ve missed out on over the years, but now that I’ve got adult money and a pc I can play whatever I want🔥🔥🔥

Also planning to record a few videos about the series. Like a retrospective/review type thing idk but I thought it’d be fun but that’ll take awhile since im working on some other video projects rn wagggh

Anyway. Sorry for rambling so much but im SUPER excited to play this series, so far I have up to sticker star downloaded n I’ll have to snag the rest tomorrow, I wanna go thru them in order so this is all going to take. A very long time but honestly I’m fine with that

GOTG Review: Hypnospace Outlaw

This is the next game in my Backlog Roulette series, where each month I spin a wheel to randomly select a game on my massive backlog that I must play (though not necessarily to completion). These wheel spins occur on the monthly preview episodes I co-host with my friends on The Casual Hour podcast.

Both of my parents were educators at my elementary school (they're retired now.) Mom was a 3rd grade teacher and Dad taught gym. They both would stay after classes were over to work on lesson plans or grade papers or move equipment, and I got to freely choose which one to spend time with before we got to go home. With Dad, I would mostly practice free throws in the gym (though I never got any good at them). But with Mom, I’d often get to play on her computer (when I wasn’t watching Digimon Adventure on her classroom TV.

That was probably my first real experience with computers. I’d play things like Oregon Trail II (the best one, by the way) or an awful typing program called PAWS featuring a freaky Cheshire-Cat-like mascot. But sometimes, I would load up Netscape Navigator and just poke around on the late ‘90s internet.

I hated this cat so much as a kid.

I only remember bits and pieces of that time online. A Sokoban block-pushing puzzler, a Super Mario Bros. fan game with all-new levels, some first-person hovercraft racer that had multiplayer LAN capabilities (I’ve never been able to find that game since, it’s definitely not Hover! by Microsoft.) a fansite for the Sonic Underground cartoon. Even with my fragmented memory, I remember the joy and adventure I had just digging around. Anything could be around that next corner, and that was half the fun.

Hypnospace Outlaw is the closest I’ve ever come to reliving those formative computer experiences. Set in an alternate 1999, you are thrust into Hypnospace — an internet stand-in that’s part GeoCities and part forum chatroom — and are asked to moderate and police this online Wild West.

Developer Tendershoot has nailed the tone and aesthetic of this era. The highly compressed bitmap images, the way pages auto-play (incredible) music when they load, the terrible, terrible fonts, the fileshare servers that are completely inscrutable unless you know exactly what you’re looking for — it’s all just perfect. And it’s not just Hypnospace. The game has its own little desktop computer experience complete with email, virtual pets, a download manager and more. It reminds me of Cibele or Her Story, but much more freeform and robust. But all that is just aesthetic — the game itself is pretty cool too. As a Hypnospace moderator, you’re given little jobs as you explore the various pages and zones of the browser: Take down some copyrighted material here, censor some threatening speech there, find some lost files that are hanging around…somewhere. Some of these tasks just require you to pay close attention to the pages themselves, while others force you to put on your hacker cap as you cross reference ID codes with unlisted pages, crack passwords or decrypt files, all while a corporate conspiracy bubbles up around you.

It’s truly satisfying to use your online sleuthing skills to their fullest. And whether you’re stopping a virus from breaking the virtual world or just banning a kid who can’t seem to stop making offensive webcomics, you just feel this sense of power.

In many ways, Hypnospace Outlaw the platonic ideal of the concept of late-90s computing. I do wonder if that hyper-specific aesthetic and mechanics gives it too narrow of an audience, but as someone who is part of that narrow audience, I found my experience with it to be incredibly fun. And it’s one I won’t soon forget.

The next characters I'm showing for Super Mario Spikers are ones that are pretty special. For the first week or so when I was starting to post these on Twitter, I kept what kind of characters I would be adding secret, sticking only to mainstays for a bit. And then, out of nowhere, I drop all seven of the partners from The Thousand-Year Door! I think this marked a bit of a turning point for the project, where it got gradually more popular (well popular as far as small artists go) and more eyes consistently on it.

I... unfortunately don't have the same effect here on tumblr because I already showed Vivian for the initial announcement. But I still wanted to do a big post with all of them! I love how each of the came out, all the partners have a special place in my heart and it was a blast bringing them to the forefront. I'm going to have a LOT to say when I eventually tackle them individually, but for now, let's go over some things that apply to all of them!

Firstly, some of the partners were given a bit of a redesign. I figure that if they were ever to be put in a sports game like this, it'd be best to take them out of the Paper Mario artstyle to make them fit better with characters like Donkey Kong or Wario. I understand that might not jive well with some of the purists out there, but the reception has been real positive. Some changes are minimal, like giving Bobbery legs or giving Goombella more curved eyebrows, and others are more extreme, like the entirety of Vivian. I'll be talking more about changes like this when I break down each character, but I'm pretty satisfied with how all these alterations came out.

They also got some snazzy icons! For every character that doesn't appear in Mario Kart or something else that gives them an emblem, I had to make one of my own. I already showed these particular icons off back a few days ago, and again, they were fun to make. I'm working towards making high-res versions of every custom icon I've done, including many characters I've yet to show off.

I think these characters were the perfect introduction to what this roster is going to be like. Pretty much everyone who played Thousand-Year Door loves the partners, and by having them in this game, it really just blows down the doors for any possible limitations. There will be a LOT more picks from other sub-series, and I can't wait to geek out about them!

Also, all their Super Spikes correlate to one of the seven Crystal Stars. I thought that was a very nice touch

BUG GAME MASTERPOST (AS OF NOV. 2022) TEXT-ONLY

heyhey! this isnt actually anything "official"! i just thought i’d make this for fun and to also spread around bug video games that others, who like the silly little critters as well, might enjoy!

(remember that this is as of nov. 29 2022 so if any game unreleased game on here is now released, it may have been after the date that this was made)
