Seasons To Write
October 4, 2023|Blogging
It's October, a great season to write and read scary stories. Seasons can give us great subject matter for writing. Some of the greatest stories are written during the seasons. You wouldn't write a story like "T'was The night before Christmas," around Easter, I mean, you could, but it wouldn't really make much sense. So when you have no idea what to write about, just think about what season it is and start writing! KSCarson

Endings
April 10, 2024|Blogging
Unfortunately, all stories come to an end. Whether good or not. Some endings can be abrupt, unexpected, full-circle, resolved, or cliffhanger-type endings. Personally, I hate an abrupt ending that leaves you to decide what happens next. A happy ending is what most of us want, but sometimes a sad or full-circle ending is better for the story. What type of endings do you prefer? I would love to hear from you and find out. Remember to "Enjoy the Write!" KSCarson

Frankenstein
October 30, 2023|Blogging
Since it is Halloween time, I am posting about Mary Shelly's novel, and have copied the latter from Wikipedia. Enjoy! KSCaron
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is an 1818 novel written by English author Mary Shelley. Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was 18, and the first edition was published anonymously in London on 1 January 1818, when she was 20. Her name first appeared in the second edition, which was published in Paris in 1821.
Shelley traveled through Europe in 1815, moving along the river Rhine in Germany, and stopping in Gernsheim, 17 kilometres (11 mi) away from Frankenstein Castle, where, two centuries before, an alchemist had engaged in experiments.[2][3][4][note 1] She then journeyed to the region of Geneva, Switzerland, where much of the story takes place. Galvanism and occult ideas were topics of conversation for her companions, particularly for her lover and future husband Percy Bysshe Shelley. In 1816, Mary, Percy, John Polidori, and Lord Byron had a competition to see who wrote the best horror story.[5] After thinking for days, Shelley was inspired to write Frankenstein after imagining a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made.[6]
Though Frankenstein is infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement, Brian Aldiss has argued regarding it as the first true science-fiction story. In contrast to previous stories with fantastical elements resembling those of later science fiction, Aldiss states, that the central character "makes a deliberate decision" and "turns to modern experiments in the laboratory" to achieve fantastic results.[7] The novel has considerably influenced literature and popular culture; it has spawned a complete genre of horror stories, films, and plays.

What Type Of Ending
February 22, 2024|Blogging
When writing a book, it inevitably has to come to an end. But how do you decide how it ends? Most readers love a happy ending, but sometimes a tragic ending is more emotional and leaves more of a mark. Personally, I hate the ending that leaves you hanging, or to your own imagination, but that's just me. I am sure a few readers like that type of ending. Now, if the book is a series that is a different story. Then it needs to have something that leads it into the next story. What type of endings do you love? Would love to hear from you, and remember, "Enjoy the Write!" KSCarson

Plots
February 13, 2024|Blogging
The dictionary explains the word plot as, "the main events of a play, novel, movie, or similar work, devised and presented by the writer as an interrelated sequence." The plot lets the reader know what's happening, describes the problems your characters are trying to solve, and gives the details on how they attempt to solve them. So you may as you may suspect, the plot is very important. Plot is essential in fiction because it moves the action forward. It also reveals the motivation behind the character's actions. Sometimes it is difficult, but try to work out the plot before the characters. But however you do it, remember, "Enjoy the Write!" KSCarson

Hardback or Paperback?
April 26, 2024|Blogging
As an avid reader, I choose hardback over paperback. Especially if collecting a certain author's works, they are just nicer and easier to read. The allure of hardcover books stems from their larger size, durability, and premium quality, making them a preferred choice for many readers. On the other hand, some individuals opt for paperback editions due to their lower cost, lighter weight, and enhanced portability. Which do you prefer? Would love to hear from you! And remember to "Enjoy the Write!" KSCarson

Spring Writing
April 1, 2024|Blogging
We are all familiar with spring cleaning, clearing out the clutter from winter months, and being inside so much. But what about spring writing? Is it any different writing in the spring as opposed to the winter? I think so, not only are days getting longer but spring is usually a time for happiness and rebirth. So what better time to start an exciting new writing project. I Find romance or children's books are good genres to write in spring. I don't know about you, but I feel happier in spring than I did during winter. So go ahead, start that new project, and remember to "Enjoy the Write!" KSCarson

Writing On Vacation
March 24, 2024|Blogging
Taking a vacation usually is time away from work, but what if you could use it to better your work? Taking a trip can be a refresher for your mind and body, depending on where you go and what you do. It can also be an inspiration for your work, or writing if you will. Writing about a place you have been, or adding it as an area your characters live, can be a great advantage. You can tap the memory of the place, the colors, building structures, and even the weather. It is kind of like researching for a story, but at the same time, a rest and change of scenery. If you've been to Hawaii and your story is centered there, it is going to be easier to describe in your story. So use a vacation to your advantage, and remember to "Enjoy the Write!" KSCarson

Vocabulary
March 5, 2024|Blogging
How important is vocabulary to a writer? One can only write using words one knows, so very! The more words you know, the better your writing will be. A good vocabulary will allow the writer and the reader to formulate more interesting sentences and avoid repetition of the same words in one sentence or paragraph. Ways to Improve Your Vocabulary. Develop a reading habit. Use the dictionary and thesaurus, play word games, use flashcards, and subscribe to “word of the day” feeds. Practice using new words in conversation, and remember to "Enjoy the Write!" KSCarson
