caduceus lvl.20 redesign i did ages ago but forgot to post

copious amounts of design notes under the cut

tl;dr: my goal with this redesign was to create a coherent design consistent with his previous art, improved enough to hopefully read as lvl.20, but still practical enough to serve as actual adventuring clothes

okay anyways so watch how autistic i can be about caduceus

i wasn't satisfied with caduceus's lvl.20 design. i'm not entirely sure how that design happened. to be fair, critrole designs have never been consistent, but lvl.20 cad abandons nearly every key aspects of cad's design. it drives me batty

why is his hair so straight and pale and dead. why is he draped in so much brown. how do those wing-skirt things work. why does his staff... look like that. like its gonna explode into toothpicks at the first use. why is there honey. why is the gold of his shield so bright. what is the rope on his shoulders for

i mean, who knows what goes on in the critrole art development process. my personal theory is that they continue to design these characters as personal ocs and not as official characters in a huge multimedia franchise, and their personal choices trump all, design considerations be damned. like, i cant really judge. i have the privilege to make whatever choices i want when drawing. i answer to no one. i could tell taliesin jaffe to go fuck himself. yknow. if i wanted to die

regardless, i dont hate everything about the lvl.20 design. i appreciate that it brought back his swirl-patterned pants, but the entire core of his design is so busy with shit that it becomes a problem

i tried to preserve cad's key aspects as much as i could in my redesign, as well as incorporate aspects i enjoyed most from each design. for example, i really like the idea of the goliath beetle armour in lvl.20 cad, but i tinted the black shell towards blue to match cad's signature teal green.

I also tried to create a palette consistent with his previous designs. teal should always be his primary colour, with pink being the most prominent accent. after that, anything thats analogous to those two is gravy. for real, i am begging critrole to at least keep consistent palettes, because this is a problem for most of their designs

my choice to include the red cords is inspired by the winter cad design as well as one of fjord's earlier designs (side note: most of fjord's designs are pretty great; he's the most consistently on-par)

i enjoy drawing aesthetic parallels between connected characters. on that note, the swirly jade earring is a gift from beau :3 because they're fun earring buddies

speaking of cad's winter design, the design sheet showed a lot of asian influence (thats mostly covered by the cloak) and i will take any excuse to add asian influence to a design. the first two tunics below were my main reference for my own tunic choice

the knots on the cords are specifically chinese knot art. the largest knot at his waist is a plate knot which can symbolize the cyclical nature of life and death, and the knot on his cape is a brocade knot which can symbolize (re)unity. i thought these concepts were in-line with cad's general philosophy and the wildmother's teachings. also, the brocade knot acts as his holy symbol with a crook-shaped pin woven through the cord. i really fuck with holy symbols being integrated into a design rather than just slapped on somewhere

lightning round design notes:

the fraying woven material is witch hair moss, which i imagine could be made very soft and warm. this is my version of the neutral-coloured flynet cape in the fourth design

i brought back the iconic pink lichen

i simplied the staff again. my way of visually portraying a growth in power is that the one wooden hand has transformed into many hands grasping the crystal, which is also a representation of cad widening his social circle and of the nein in general

cad curly hair and beard so important to me

cad wide nose so important to me

final note:

the pose i chose for caduceus was very intentional. while cad looks great in a power pose, i feel like it doesnt suit his character. his power isnt so confrontational. his power is quiet and gentle and humble and inevitable. he doesnt need to show off. he's just chilling. i love this dumb silly man

and for the record, while i consider cad to be the worst lvl.20 design, jester is a guaranteed second place. very tempted to redesign her as well, because mature-but-frilly pirate lolita is right up my alley

I agree with your analysis of Imogen and find her hypocrisy fascinating. In the same episode she (understandably) tells Laudna she's uncomfortable with Delilah being able to watch them all the time, she takes off her circlet! And Laudna does not voice any concerns to her. I think the more childlike and pliable she seems, the more I don't think I'll ever get on board Imodna. Do you think Marisha to some degree still doesn't know what she wants Laudna to be?

So I may be going off Critrole Stats here and haven't rewatched it but I believe Laudna does actually briefly note that Imogen doesn't need to babysit the party, though she quickly walks it back. She doesn't say anything about the line in which Imogen states she's disgusted but to be honest, while my issues with how Laudna is played are well documented, this specific choice feels fine to me. I think the revelations from this episode need to be unpacked after the team-building exercises are over. I also think, to be honest, that Laudna's pliability and instant agreement with Imogen are a reason why I don't care for their relationship, but does feel like one of the few consistent things about the character not just within the story but with Laudna's backstory. She was desperately lonely, with Delilah preying on this, and she's been terrified to say things that might make the person she believes will stay with her leave. I'm hoping that the statement of disgust and the flash of Laudna perhaps thinking taking off the circlet is a bad idea will get explored but I think that's something for next episode, not this one. I'll criticize if it gets dropped entirely but it's okay that it didn't get addressed and hashed out right now.

So I’m curious if you have any idea what’s making acofaf click so we’ll for you above other d20 seasons? I agree with that opinion but I don’t even have a good sense of what about it is making me feel that way, what’s your take? I feel there’s something in the characters? The chemistry between everyone came so instantly and on such a deep level of complexity, beyond anything that short I’d ever seen.

Ok so I waited until I finished the series to answer this because I was also drawing a blank as to why this miniseries captured my attention so much more than previous Dimension 20 seasons. And it's not like I disliked other D20 stories I've watched. I enjoyed Escape from the Bloodkeep and Pirates of Leviathan and Coffin Run - but I had to work to finish those (actually, thinking back, I might not have actually finished EftB?). They didn't grab me the way A Court of Fey and Flowers has.

The characters and chemistry are definitely doing some heavy lifting - it was a great choice of cast and the players clearly planned some useful connections that helped with RP. Another major point in its favor is a very well-plotted narrative for a mini-campaign, that very pointedly included every single character in a significant if sometimes unexpected way. But you know what the weird conclusion I've come to is, about what it actually was that helped it hold my attention?

No combat.

Which is weird, coming from me! I'm a person who famously loves D&D combat, gets excited for it in CritRole, and has a post sitting in drafts talking about how "some of us are here for the combat, actually" when watching D&D actual play. But I think the lack of combat in ACoFaF really worked for the story they were telling, and helped it not get bogged down.

Crucially, I think sometimes with shorter miniseries and very short campaigns I can be less interested in combat because I haven't had time to get to know the characters enough to care about their combat moves. Or the combat itself, through literally no ones fault (because of dice rolls) just isn't that interesting. And a combat encounter being kind of uninteresting is way more of an issue in, say, a 6 episode series than in a full campaign that is going to run over 2 years and can survive some dud combats.

Actually, it's notable that the one, theater of the mind combat at the end of ACoFaF was the part I struggled the most to focus on, even though it was the climax of the story!

So while I am, as noted, a huge ttrpg combat lover, ACoFaF managed to maintain some very real story tension within D&D game mechanics without combat - which is maybe its greatest achievement.

late to this but— watched exu: calamity, thinking i’d just kinda microdose on CR nostalgia with this handy miniseries. holy shit. “oh i’ll just put this on in the background while i draw” GRIPPED. glued to the screen the entire time. like i remember critrole having its moments but this was on another LEVEL, HOW did they tell a story that tight in this medium wtf wtF wtffff

i was openly weeping the whole time & experienced every human emotion but mostly bewildered awe at the craftsmanship. i want like a full technical breakdown of how they Did That. i want to watch the whole 20~ hour runtime again and take notes

what a hell of a show. unreal.

I'm having thoughts about Ashton and Fearne's relationship. Platonic or romantic I don't mind either, I just.

Fearne. Fearne who Morri taken a shine to. Fearne, she was collected, traded for a favor, given, kept, kept, kept, like a toy. A thing, a thing - yes her parents love her yes they'd give her the moon (hah!) but she's a precious thing to them, a six year old, a child but without any of the budding autonomy of one, talked about with the same fond possessiveness as a pet. All the language surounding her treats her as an object - it certainly sheds some light on how she views her relationships. She was loved, yes, but loved enough to be *worth* something when traded, loved enough to be hoarded by Morri.

Ashton, who was a Nobody and then nobody to the Nobodies, who left him for dead, who potentially even set him up??? (I've seen some mutterings about that). Ashton who was an unwanted orphan, a Greymoore, one body among the masses, nobody important to anyone (bar Milo and FCG). Ashton who is one man's trash, another man's treasure - broken but gilded.

And what do they do?

They steal from eachother.

"Fuck you, you're someone, because a thing can't have things and I want your things. You're a cunning foe in this game of ours, you're fun to play with, fuck you, you can't say steal from a toy. It's only fun taking things because they're owned by you," says Ashton.

"You're worth taking from, you're worth the game, you're someone I want to interact with. I'll watch you sleep, I'll look into your head like you matter. You're some*body* and you have some *things* and I'll keep coming back to you," says Fearne.

"I'll steal you," they both say. "You're worth stealing, but only because it’s you, and I care about you."

I fully forgot that I pre-ordered Exquisite Exandria until it arrived this morning, so you know what that means!

You hear the door to your room crack open and burrow deeper into your blankets. Maybe if you pretend to be asleep, he’ll leave you alone.

“Love?” The side of the bed dips down as Vax sits behind you, resting a hand on your shoulder. At your silence, you feel the bed shift as Vax stands. You can hear his armor falling to the floor before he eventually slides into the bed behind you.

Vax carefully wraps an arm around you, his other arm working it’s way between your head and the bed. Once he’s got both arms around you, he pulls himself closer, pressing a kiss to your shoulder.

This is what you loved about Vax. He doesn’t press you to share what’s on your mind, even though it eats him up to watch you struggle.

With a sigh, you roll over and press your face into the curve between his neck and shoulder. Vax runs a hand soothingly along your back and presses a kiss to your head.

“There you are.” He says with a small smile. “Bad day?”

You hum in response, pressing closer to him. If only you could crawl into him, press yourself into his skin, forget where you start and he begins. Maybe that’d make you feel better.

“Can you just hold me a little while longer?” You murmur. Vax pulls the blanket tighter around the both of you.

“Of course. Whatever you need.”

Hi, so if you’re comfortable writing this, would you be willing to write something for Vax where the reader finds out she’s pregnant (however they find that out in a fantasy world anyway) and how she tells Vax and his reaction?

You had to tell Vax.

That was the long and short of it. However, that thought made anxiety flutter in your belly. Leaving the healer had your head in all sorts of a mess. You could’ve gone to Pike, you muse, but something about that was even more intimidating.

You paced the room you shared with Vax in Whitestone, carving a path among the various items strewn about. Your cloak, a box of trinkets Vax keeps, the small pile of dirty laundry.

The sound of the door opening spooks you and you’re caught between staying standing to greet him versus trying to sit casually on the bed; when Vax fully gets the door open, he finds you wide eyed and in the middle of the room.

“Were you in the middle of something?” He asks, eyebrow raised and a smile dancing across his face. “I can leave and come back.”

“No, no!” You step towards him, grabbing his wrist and tugging him into the room. Vax lets the door fall close behind him as he follows your movements, his free hand raising to run his knuckles along your cheek. You lead him to the bed and let go of his wrist. “Will you…would you sit? For a minute? I need to tell you something.”

Vax eyed you curiously as he slowly lowered himself to sit on the bed. He rested his hands lightly on your hips, tipping his head to the side as he peered up at you.

“Did I do something wrong? That’s usually why people want to talk to me.” Vax says, squeezing your hips with a teasing smile on his face. “If I did, I’m very sorry and I’ll never do it again, probably. If I didn’t-“

“I’m pregnant.” You blurt out in the middle of his rambling. Vax stills, his grip at your waist loosening. After a long, loooong moment of his blank stare, you take a step back.

The movement seems to jostle Vax back to reality and before you can blink he’s stood, gathering you in his arms and swinging you in a circle.

“Say it again.” Vax says, breathless. You repeat yourself, a grin growing across your face as Vax’s face lights up even more. He peppers kisses along your face and you can’t help but laugh. Your feet are barely touching the floor but the smile on Vax’s face is all you can focus on.

Telling the rest of Vox Machina went about as you expected. Grog and Scanlan were quick to tease Vax with crude jokes but you could see how happy both were. Pike and Keyleth were thrilled, immediately asking a dozen questions. Percy was more politely congratulatory and Vex…at first, Vex gave you a very long, hard look. But that dissolved away into a warm, small smile. And if you saw tears in her eyes, well, no you didn’t.

Through the whole process, Vax could hardly take his eyes off you and one hand was always resting near your middle.

Could you write some fluffy headcanons for Percy x reader but also the whole Vox Machina crew with a totally stressed, overworked reader?

I'm having a million things to do at work, teach prepare experiments, while also applying for jobs and prepare my practical and theoretical graduation exam.

Sometimes it can be overwhelming, some fluffy headcanons would be very appreciated. :)

Sorry it’s taken so long dear ! I hope your exams went/go swimmingly, that you find an enjoyable job, and that you are doing well ❤️

Percy

i think we can all agree that Percy is pictured in the dictionary beside “overworked” and “stressed”

So I’m not sure how long it’ll take for him to catch on that you’re in a similar position

once he notices though, he’ll gently fuss at you to take more breaks or share your work with him (the hypocrisy lol)

if the work can be done by anyone other than you, Percy does not hesitate to shove it on someone else.

If you tell him that you’ll relax so long as he joins you, he’ll moan and complain but put his work to the side. He wants you happy first and foremost and honestly, his work can wait

Enjoys strolling the Whitestone gardens with you as a way to unwind. He’ll tell you the history of the gardens or point out new plants Keyleth has helped him plant

Secretly takes on some of your workload for himself. after you’ve gone to sleep, he’ll slip out of bed and tackle a problem that’s been giving you trouble, leaving you a sweet note when he’s done

Vex

Let’s you keep working…for a little while. But when she picks up on you being stressed and overworked, she’s watching you like a hawk

The minute you stop, just to take a breath or grab a snack or whatever, she’s covertly dragging you away to do something else. But like, as a favor to her

“I didn’t want to interrupt your work, darling, but can I borrow you for a moment?” said with a soft smile, her hands already pulling you away

Doesn’t actually need you for anything, Vex just wants to make sure you’re taking breaks and relaxing

Vax

If you so much as mention being slightly stressed, Vax is swooping in and pulling you away from whatever work you’re doing

He absolutely does not enjoy seeing you be anything other than happy and content so he does anything in his power to help you relax and feel better

Overworked? Helps to figure out if you could delegate to anyone else. If it’s not a necessity that you do the work, then someone else can handle it.

Stressed? Immediately offers a thousand ideas of how you can relax. Let him play with your hair and give you a scalp massage. Go flying with his wings (you don’t think that’s nearly as relaxing as he thinks it is). Just lie in bed together and chat.

Keyleth

Prone to worry and stress herself, she picks up on your troubles quickly. But she hesitated to interfere- she doesn’t want you thinking she’s trying to order you around or that she thinks you’re incapable

She’s gonna try and help you through your workload, to the best of her ability. If it’s really outside of her capabilities, she’ll resort to bring you snacks and reminding you to take breaks

When it comes down to it, she’s not afraid to put her foot down. Whatever work that needs to be done can’t be so important that you’re harming yourself along the way.

Keyleth gets you to take walks with her, maybe go swimming if that’s an option where y’all are, picnics, or even just hanging out with the rest of Vox Machina

I feel like Keyleth is very much an empath. You being stressed makes her stressed. You’re supposed to be the level headed and pulled together one!

Pike

Campaign 2 you say? 🤔

Could I please request something with Caleb being totally smitten with the reader since day one, meeting in that tavern? And maybe just little moments within the campaign where it's so blatantly obvious?

(thank you if you decide to write this, but do not feel obligated to! x)

“It’s just that you smell.”

“Jester!” You smack her arm. “You don’t just say things like that!” You lean around to look at the guy. “I’m so sorry for her.”

“I have heard worse.” Caleb reassured you.

“See!” Jester said and you let out an exasperated sigh. You give him an apologetic look and earn a small smile in response.

Kindness is the easiest way to win Caleb over, especially if you are just so intrinsically kind. No motivations, just straight up a kind person.

Looking out for him and Nott is also a way to get his attention. Keeping them safe during fights, maybe helping them out with a few gold here or there.

“You in there?” Caleb finally managed to peel his eyes open and you stop patting his cheek. “There you are.”

His eyes wander past you to the sizzling remains of the priest and you frown, patting his cheek softly again.

“Come on, Caleb, let’s go.” You rose to your feet and Caleb followed you shakily, thankful for your hand on his elbow.

Being understanding of Caleb and his past goes a long way to earn his affection as well, though he’s a bit hesitant about it. He doesn’t feel like he deserves any understanding.

The less you judge him, the more he’ll be inclined to share, which leads to a stronger camaraderie between the two of you and growing affection on his part

A rapid knocking comes from your door. You open it to find Caleb, a wide grin on his face.

“Are you busy? I would like to show you something.” At your agreement he leads you up to the rooftop of the Xhorhaus, to a patch of bare rooftop away from the giant tree.

“It is not- it is not finished but I - I am excited to show you!” Caleb rambled, tugging you to one side then kneeling along the roof.

“Well, I’m excited to see it!” You grin, crouching beside him. He took out some string and started twisting it this way and that, making a cat's cradle. Caleb ignites it and the flames crawl across the strings then further, across the roof, in the form of a web. “Whoa!”

“It will, hopefully, be a bit stronger once I figure it out.” Caleb explains, watching the fire sizzle out.

“Gods, Caleb, that’s so cool! Did you come up with this yourself?” You ask as you place a hand on his shoulder. He nods, a faint blush across his cheeks. “You’re so fucking smart, that’s incredible.”

Reading in the same room is also a good way to spend time with Caleb- it takes the pressure off him to socially entertaining and y’all still get to be together

Even if you’re not magically inclined, showing interest in magic is a good way to connect to Caleb. Especially if you show particular interest in the spells he designs himself.

It takes a while but eventually, Caleb is reaching for your hand in the quiet moments. Soft whispers, pouring over tomes and maps. A firm body against yours at night. Caleb does not think he’s deserving of much but you convince him that he is, at least, deserving of your love.

My #1 post of 2022

Reader likes cuddling with Frumpkin, while Caleb wishes he was Frumpkin.

Finally finished up this drabble from ages ago, and I’m not completely happy with it but I hope y’all enjoy regardless 🌼 feel free to send in requests that you’d be interested to see ❤️

Caleb jolts back into his body, looking quickly to his side as Veth pulls her hand back to herself.

“I’m sorry!” Veth said, patting Caleb’s arm where she’d given him a slight slap, to bring him back to his body. “You weren’t answering me, I was getting worried…”

Caleb’s gaze drifts to Frumpkin, who was curled up against you. You who, fast asleep, had one arm thrown over Frumpkin, holding him to you even as you curled around him.

“Sorry, I’m fine.” Caleb replies to Veth, dragging his eyes away. Veth gave him a concerned frown, glancing quickly towards you and Frumpkin.

“Were you...were you Frumpkin?” Veth asks. Caleb flushes a bit, pointedly not looking back at Veth.

“No.”

Caleb watches as you let out a huff in your sleep, readjusting yourself and pulling Frumpkin closer to you. He’s pointedly ignoring the knowing and sad look Veth is giving him. It had been easier in the Tower. He could bury himself in a blanket of cats and pretend he wasn’t alone. He knew you did the same, choosing different cats each night - not unlike Jester. You didn’t need Frumpkin when there was a kitchen full of cats to choose from.

On this one night, when they’d had to fore-go the Tower, he’d let you borrow Frumpkin and he’d let himself have one selfish evening of pretending you were holding him.

“That’s almost creepy, Caleb.” Veth says quietly. She doesn’t want him angry but she also knows this isn't good for him.

“I-I know, okay? I’m working on it.” He pulls the hood of his coat up, effectively cutting Veth off. He could put his vision back into Frumpkin, but he won’t. Not tonight. The guilt of being caught, on top of the usual guilt of doing this, was enough to dissuade him.

“Caleb!” You called out, jogging a bit to catch up to him. The Mighty Nein were taking a break in Nicodranas for a while, much to everyone’s relief. The group had kind of splintered off, each doing their own thing, but you found yourself getting lonely. Spying Caleb seemingly unbusy was too good of an opportunity to miss.

He jumped a bit in surprise, but slowed and turned to face you. As you reached him, you looped your arm through his and leaned against his shoulder.

“Whatcha up to?” You asked.

“Ah, oh, nothing much. Jester said there was a book shop somewhere nearby so I thought I’d take a look.”

“Mind if I tag along?” Caleb shook his head, a slight blush rising across his face as he leads you down the street. “Oh! Maybe we can find another trashy romance novel for Jester, I’m pretty sure she’s read Tusk Love at least 3 times by now.”

You chatter at him as y’all walk the streets, searching for the bookstore. Caleb is mostly quiet, his arm a bit tense in yours, but you try not to let it get to you.

It took another ten minutes of wandering to find the small shop but it was worth it. Every open surface was crammed with books. Both you and Caleb stalled in the doorway to just take in the whole place. A small gnome woman greeted you both from behind a towering pile of books and beckoned you to take a look around.

Nearly an hour later, you and Caleb finally emerged from the shop. Coin purses lighter but a few books richer. You’d mostly grabbed books for some of the others; trashy romance for Jester, a flora guide you thought Yasha might appreciate, and a small cookbook written in both common and what appeared to be Zemnian.

Caleb had his own small pile of books, mostly anything he thought could be useful in the Mighty Nein’s adventures. Conversation came easier as the two of you discussed your picks. You split ways once back at the Lavish Chateau.

That night, you begged Frumpkin off Caleb again, turning him into your own personal teddy bear for the night. Not that Frumpkin ever seemed to mind, if the constant purring was any indication.

You told Frumpkin about your day, as a way to wind down. You even told him about the little cookbook you’d bought and confided in the cat that, just maybe, you could figure out a recipe to make for Caleb, to maybe remind him of home. Frumpkin just blinked up at you slowly.

The next morning, you sat at one of the tables in the Chateau as you slowly ate breakfast. Yasha had adored the book you’d bought her and was perusing it as she sat near a window, her food forgotten.

“Morning.” Caleb appeared on the stairs, coming to sit with you.

“Good morning, Caleb.” You replied, speaking around the fruit in your mouth. As Caleb settled in you noticed that Caleb seemed…less tense? Almost relaxed.

“Is that the book you bought Yasha?” He asked, gesturing towards Yasha.

“Yes! She’s really happy with it, thank goodness.” You grin, casting a happy glance towards her.
