I love the fact that Exquisite Exandria is depicted as an in-universe cookbook, apparently published some time in 843 PD.
What I love most is that several recipes are directly contributed by the Mighty Nein, which means the in-universe authors met and interviewed them, and the chapter intro for Wildemount recounts their involvement with ending the War of Ash and Light. Which means that the most comprehensive public records of the Mighty Nein and their deeds in Exandria... is in a cookbook.

Illustration for the interior title page of Critical Role and Penguin Random House's recently released Exquisite Exandria, the official cookbook of Critical Role, by @lizmarsham with recipes by @jesseszewczyk , Susan Vu and Amanda Yee.
This is a special one because it actually is a collaboration with my sister Mariana, who is an amazing architect and helped me design the look of the building itself. I would also like to thank her and Mariana Britto for helping out with the references for some of the characters. Special thanks to Ian Dingman for his help and guidance throughout this project.
This was a fun yet challenging piece to paint, with so many characters I adore and tasty looking dishes. I'm also terminally obsessed with CR and included a bunch of easter eggs for critters to enjoy 😉

Cover reveal for the upcoming Critical Role cookbook!
Tumblr media
Check out all the Easter eggs hidden in that art, lol
Plus a sneak preview of one of the included recipes: De Rolos’ Revenge Pasta!
Tumblr media
De Rolos’ Revenge Pasta
For generations, the traditional dish of the de Rolos, rulers of the city of Whitestone, was a warming pasta puttanesca. Then the Briarwoods took over the city, slaughtered all but two of the de Rolos, and reigned for years of gloom and terror. After the survivors, Percy and his sister Cassandra, reclaimed Whitestone with Vox Machina's help, some old traditions were bound to evolve. Now a new dish has been added to the celebratory rotation. The topping is white, like Percy's hair, rather than the red of blood, and the pasta contains two entire heads of garlic. Partake in good health and stinky breath. Unless you're a vampire, in which case: go straight to hell, and say hi to the Briarwoods for us.
PREP TIME: 10 minutes
COOK TIME: 20 minutes
Kosher salt
1 pound / 450g dried spaghetti
½ cup / 120ml extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving
20 garlic cloves, thinly sliced (about ½ cup / 100g)
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
Freshly ground black pepper
1 cup / 15g finely chopped fresh parsley leaves (from about 1 small bunch)
1½ cups / 360g whole milk ricotta cheese
Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the spaghetti and cook according to the package instructions, 9 to 12 minutes. Drain in a colander.
Heat the olive oil in the now-empty pot over medium heat. Add the garlic and red pepper flakes and cook, stirring often, until the garlic is very fragrant and soft, 2½ to 3½ minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and add the cooked spaghetti, 1 teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, and the parsley. Toss the pasta to evenly coat it with the infused oil.
Transfer the pasta onto serving plates and top each portion with a generous dollop of ricotta cheese. Drizzle with olive oil and finish with additional black pepper.

THE EXQUISITE EXANDRIA COOKBOOK IS GOING TO KILL ME with how incredibly top quality these recipes are. I'm eating Essek's family recipe for the stew they eat on birthdays and adoption days. It tastes like Essek's voice sounds. It tastes like love and cold weather and candles in the dark. HOW DID THE CREW MAKE A COOKBOOK INTO A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE?
Buy this book. If you love CR, if you want to feel like you've opened a portal into Exandria in your kitchen, you need this book.

Frost worms are just icy elemental purple worms. Oh my god. And don’t even get me started on the Everything of stew, Essek’s favorite food, being the Welcome to the Den food of Den Thelyss.

I fully forgot that I pre-ordered Exquisite Exandria until it arrived this morning, so you know what that means!
time for lore!
The Dawnfather is also the god of time. (pg. 77)
During celebrations, the "vow of Vasselheim" is recited: "we remember and thank the gods who saved us. We honor their magic and practice no other. We remember the hubris that nearly destroyed us. We will never forget again." Vasselheim's culture and/or governance (but not the entirety of Issylra itself) believes that arcane magic was the cause of the Calamity, and refuses to make the mistakes of its ancestors. (pg. 77)
There's a particular sentence that could allude to Gruumsh, the Ruiner having been the one to bring down Aeor: "he drove his spear clean through [Cael Morrow] and into the ground below, detonating a third of the continent in one gigantic strike." Using "clean through" and "detonate" here is reminiscent of Matt's description of the smooth borehole and mile-wide crater in the Genesis Ward. (pg. 102)
The Dwendalian Empire has declared that "divine magic and most religious worship are trickery and deceit." This is why they found the Kryn Dynasty's theocracy so threatening. (pg. 152)
The Cerberus Assembly is referred to as "a pillar of corruption at the heart of a totalitarian government." (pg. 153)
Essek Thelyss is canonically a member of the Mighty Nein. (pg. 154)
After Yasha brought her book of flowers to Zuala's grave, she started her own flower garden with Beau, and the first seeds she planted there were from the Blooming Grove. (pg. 190)
Athodan tried to use gravity magic to reverse the over-ripening of fruit. It failed, but the resulting concoction was used to taunt and celebrate him for months. (pg. 206)

Black Moss Cupcake Recipe
Thanks to a review of Exquisite Exandria by CBR.com we now have the recipe for Uthodurn's infamous Black Moss Cupcakes!
INGREDIENTS:
Dark Chocolate Cupcakes Ingredients: 1 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 cup sugar 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 large egg 2/3 cup whole milk 1/3 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2-3 drops black food coloring (optional)
Chocolate Matcha Frosting 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 ounces full-fat cream cheese (room temperature) 1 1/3 cup confectioners' sugar 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoon matcha powder 1 teaspoon whole milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 pinch of salt
Moss Cookie Crunchies 3/4 cup vanilla wafer cookies 1/12 teaspoon matcha powder 1/12 teaspoon light brown sugar 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted and cooled
Dust of Deliciousness: Ingredients redacted, food glitter recommended as replacement
INSTRUCTIONS:
Dark Chocolate Cupcakes
Set a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 325*F/165*C. Line the cups of a 12-cup standard muffin tin with paper cupcake liners.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. In a second large mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, sour cream, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and black food coloring until no streaks of egg remain. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix with a rubber spatula until a smooth batter forms and no pockets of dry flour remain.
Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full. Bake, rotating the pan front to back halfway through baking, 16-19 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached. Let cool slightly, then transfer the cupcakes onto a cool rack and let cool completely.
Chocolate Match Frosting
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the butter, cream cheese, confectioners' sugar, cocoa powder, matcha powder, milk, vanilla, and salt. (Alternatively, use a large mixing bowl and electric handheld mixer.) Mix on low speed just until the ingredients are combined, then increase the speed to medium-high and beat until frosting is light and fluffy, 1 1/2-2 1/2 minutes. Transfer the frosting to a large piping bag fitted with a straight tip, or a zip-top bag with one corner snipped off.
Moss Cookie Crunchies
Place the vanilla wafer cookies in the bowl of a food processor and process until they are the texture of fine sand, 15-25 seconds. (Alternatively, place the cookies in a large zip-top bag and smash with a rolling pin or skillet.) Transfer the crushed cookies to a large mixing bowl and add the brown sugar and matcha powder. Add the melted butter and mix, using your hands, until the crumbs are evenly moistened.
Dust of Deliciousness
Frost the cupcakes by piping an even, generous layer of frosting on top of each. Working with one cupcake at a time, invert the cupcake and gently press the frosted top into the bowl of cookie crunchies, rotating so the moss sticks to the sides of the frosting until the top is evenly coated. Repeat this process with the remaining cupcakes. Sprinkle all with Dust of Deliciousness.

Introduction illustration of the First Draught Book Club, the party of adventurers traveling through Exandria searching for new recipes and exciting ingredients, for Critical Role and Penguin Random House's recently released Exquisite Exandria, the official cookbook of Critical Role.
Because it is an in-universe book, I was commissioned to illustrate the writers and chefs as characters based on a brief description of their preferred classes and outfits: Liz Marsham as a human warlock with a spectral cat, Susan Vu as a moon elf fighter, Jesse Szewczyk as a half-elf rogue and Amanda Yee as a human wizard.

This one was a lot of fun! I made sure to include a lot of references and easter eggs for the most observant critters. Thanks again to my sister Mariana for helping with reference photos and Ian Dingman @iadingman for his help and guidance.

Things that I love about Exquisite Exandria:
Regions are culturally coherent and comparable to our own traditions! Tal'dorei has pies easily recognizable as originating in the Americas, while Issylra's dishes are clearly Scandanavian (smørrebrød! Salmon with mustard!). Rosohna boasts a gorgeous fusion between Russian and East Asian cuisine (Frost worm [Venison] stew with yucca, chinese cooking wine, Japanese curry, and cold weather apples!). Jrusar is Mediterranean, but in a Greek, Italian, and diaspora Jewish way (Lamb! Mortadella! Brisket!), while Ank'harel is Mediterranean but in a Palestinian, Iranian, Turkish way (Couscous! Porridge with figs, pistachios and orange blossom water!). The attention to detail regarding geographical proximity and cultural interplay is absolutely gorgeous.
The Lore!! This thing reads like a travelogue, a warm, loving anthropological study, and a cheeky nod to our heroes and their friends from all three campaigns. Victor admits he's been eating gunpowder. We get to learn what exactly is under the gravy in Pretty's famous Meal. Frumpkin teaches our friendly authors to make fish tacos. We get Pike's purple jewel cake recipe, a GoFiBePo charcuterie board (all five hours of prep included!), and, yes, an approximate recipe for Fusaka. Don't put it in any non mouth orifices!
This whole project is equally hilarious, touching, and staggeringly competent in its consistency. The lore and the recipes are equally detailed and enticing. I know Exandria better than I did before I read this thing, and there isn't a single recipe in it that I'm not deeply curious about trying to replicate. I can't recommend it enough if you're a Crit Role fan.
