You're right about Arrival and you should say it

lol I'm so curious what you have against Arrival! I'm pretty sure I've watched it but I've never heard anyone's opinions on it

Ok so late to replying to this so the context is long gone but:

I pettily hate Arrival because I saw it in the theater with some friends and the twist made me roll my eyes and dislike pretty much all the main characters (the don’t get me started thing is here, cause the flash forward thing made me think the main character was incredibly selfish) , but everyone I was with loved it. So a movie I was just sort of “meh” on I disliked more out of spite.

I think it's inevitable that a certain group of people will take Orym's statement about not being able to put down the lens he see the world through as further proof that his perspective is subjective and therefore untrustworthy as it applies to the Vanguard, but imo it serves as a stronger indictment toward those who are able to view the Vanguard as anything other than awful and predatory and murderous. Other people have the luxury of being able to see this through another lens if they so want to--Orym cannot. Because once a group like this has murdered your family, for the sake of a practice run no less, a test, it is impossible to view the situation in any other way. He is walking proof of the harm that the Vanguard does. His loved ones have been deemed "necessary collateral damage." His lens is not one that can or should be set aside in the assessment of the Vanguard, because if they are willing to commit such heinous crimes and excuse them as necessary collateral for ends that are so uncertain, then they are fundamentally not an organization that can be reasoned with or even should be sympathized with

It is tbh wild to see a corner of the twitter crowd trying to position Liliana as a person from a “powerless background” who is supposed to be framed as deserving endless sympathy and forgiveness for “being frustrating” as if she’s supposed to be the working class/marginalized insert (often spoken in the same breath as calling Orym “privileged” and a person who doesn’t know hardship)…

when on the other hand the narrative happening in the scenes themselves is, to me, a horrifying and nauseating replica of when USian christian nationalist/fascist types smile politely at you while calmly insisting that the pain and suffering of you and people like you is necessary and good.

Every time I’ve seen some entitled guy on Twitter this morning complain “maybe you should check in on what your FANS want” or say “glad to see the death of CR in real time, you’re shitting on your fans!” I grow more happy with CR for daring to be bold and do something unexpected and hope they are more quietly hostile to those fans and their entitlement, tbh.
