DIABOLIK LOVERS DAYLIGHT Vol. 2 Sakamaki Shuu [Track 3]
Tumblr media
Original title: 眠りの底へ
Source: Diabolik Lovers Daylight Vol. 2 Sakamaki Shuu
Audio: Here
Seiyuu: Toriumi Kousuke
Translator’s note: Seems like karma came back to bite Shuu in the ass because after calling the MC ‘a bother’ for two tracks straight, he now begins to realize just how important she actually is to him. They do say that you don’t notice how much you love someone, until you’ve already lost them and wellー I suppose that’s the concept Rejet went with this time.

Track 3: Into a Deep Slumber
“ーー Oi! ...Oi, I’m talking to you!”
*Rustle*
“What are you doing...? This is the living room, you know? If you’re going to start sleeping here, then I’m pretty sure you’re in no position to judge me for doing the same.”
You don’t respond.
“Are you even listening? You didn’t just doze off, but were actually asleep?”
You nod.
“Hmー I mean, it doesn’t really matter but could you please stop always being one step ahead of me? For some reason, whenever I set my sights on a napping spot, you’re already there. It’s honestly a bothーー ...? ...Aren’t you kind of weird today? ...You’ve always been an airhead, but even so, today you’re...”
You start nodding off again.
“Haah...!? Oi...! Wait! You’re not gonna fall asleep again, riーー”
Shuu’s voice grows distant before cutting off.
“...You’ve got to be kidding me. She actually fell asleep in the middle of our conversation. Has she always been the type to just nod off like that regardless of the time or place? ーー Or rather, I can’t lie down when she’s already here. ...If I just abandon her here like this, it’s highly likely either Ayato or Laito will try and abuse the situation. Hm...What an annoyance.”
Shuu picks you up.
*Rustle rustle*
“...Not waking up even after being lifted into the air, huh? Is she actually fast asleep? ...She seems strangely light. Has she always been this light? Oh well, whatever. It’d be troublesome if one of the other guys saw me doing this. From here...My room’s the closest, huh? Pwaah...Nnh...I’m already sleepy though...”
He walks off with you, bringing you to his room.
*SCENE SHIFT*
Shuu lays you down on the bed.
*Thud*
"Haah...I wonder how much she has to trouble me until she’s satisfied? This is exactly why I struggle dealing with her...I’m out of energy, completely exhausted.”
He plops down next to you.
*Rustle*
*TIMESKIP*
“Zz...Zz...Nnh...Hm?”
*Rustle*
“Oh...”
*Rustle*
“I must have dozed off as well...”
He looks over at you.
“Oi. Are you still snoozing? ...Pretty sure she’ll make a fuss again if I don’t wake her up in time for school. Haah... Oi.”
*Rustle*
“How long do you intend to sleep for? Don’t you think it’s about time you wake up?”
You don’t wake up at all.
“...Oi!”
*Rustle*
( No matter how many times I called out for her, or shook her shoulder, she wouldn’t wake up. Something was off. I could tell as much. )
“...What’s going on? ...I guess my best bet would be...Consulting with Reiji, I guess?”
Shuu leaves the room.
( After witnessing how she would fail to react to anything, Reiji came up with a certain hypothesis. While it was obviously odd for her not to wake up, the thing which bothered him the most was her weakened physical health. This had extended to her heartbeat as well, with her heart apparently having grown weaker. In other words, he assumed that she had fallen into a deep slumber, either to protect her heart from giving in, or as a way to fight back against her own detoriating health.
I couldn’t help but let a chuckle slip. I failed to grasp how such a ridiculous situation would suddenly occur. However, even if I didn’t understand it, I couldn’t deny that the same woman who usually wouldn’t give me a break, was now there laying completely unmoving in front of my eyes. )
*TIMESKIP*
Shuu enters your room.
*Thud*
“...It’s almost as if she has entered hibernation. If you fell asleep to keep yourself alive and preserve energy, then I must say that was quite the clever idea coming from you.”
( However, protecting her own heart came at a price. As long as she remained asleep like this, it would never heal. Without being given something to replenish her body, she was headed straight to the grave. ...On top of that, her heart is special. Giving her the same treatment as a regular human would be meaningless. If there was something which could help her, it has to be... )
“Haah...I didn’t think I’d ever have to pierce through my own skin.”
He bites himself.
“Ughーー!!”
*Drip drip*
“Hah...Did I trust them in too deep? I’m always just biting as I please after all, so I don’t know how to hold myself back. ...Oh well, you better don’t spit it back out even if it tastes bad.”
Shuu gives you his blood mouth-to-mouth.
*Smooch*
“You will drink my blood...The usual roles are reversed, huh? Well, it’s not like we’ll notice change right away, huh? For one, I’m still doubtful whether simply feeding you my blood will have any effect.”
*Rustle*
“...Reiji must have taken notice that something was wrong with you. He pointed out your pale complexion before, didn’t he? ...I didn’t realize at all. Even though I should be the one who spent the most time with you. I suppose it would be more correct to say that I didn’t make any effort to notice. When you told me you were feeling under the weather at the infirmary, I brushed it off as if it was nothing as well. And this...is the result of that. ...Hah, I really am a failure of a heir in every single way, huh?
ーー It’s quiet. I’m not really in the mood to go to school, so guess I’ll get some sleep as well. It’s not like she’ll complain about me lying down next to her now.”
He joins you in bed.
“Hm...”
*Rustle rustle*
“Ugh...Tsk...”
*Rustle*
“Ugh...Guess I can’t sleep when I know there’s nobody who will come and wake me up.”
Shuu gets up from the bed and leaves the room.
( From that day onwards, I would visit her every day to donate my own blood. However, even after several days or weeks had passed, nothing changed aside from the increasing number of bite marks on my own hands and arms. She still continues to sleep to this day. Without looking at my face, or reacting to my voice, just quietly slumberingーー )
ーー TO BE CONTINUED ーー

Love is a Sacrifice – Jeong Yunho
Pairing: ateez Yunho x reader + stray kids collab

Word Count: 11k
Warnings: death, blood, guns, violence, typical mafia thinks
A/n: I'm so sorry this nearly took me about a month to complete, but I had to back up constantly and at one point I had to start completely from scratch. Anyway, enjoy another mafia from me and I hope you enjoy it! @vernonvsblog
Tumblr media
In a sudden instant, your back dug further into the passenger seat as the car you were riding in slowly climbed to an increase faster than the speed limit. Out of fear you closed your eyes and tried to remain calm as your husband gripped the steering wheel tightly in his hands. Adrenaline was pumping through his veins and he pushed the accelerator harder only scaring you more. Jeong Yunho wasn't mad, he was afraid. His actions were urgent and the worst of the worst was rushing through his head over and over like a song on repeat.
The two of you had been out to dinner at a very secluded restaurant when Yunho's emergency pager went off. Mingi, Yunho's second in command, had alerted him about a problem back at the network and further action took place when Hongjoong, the network's hit-man, called him. Both men reported the same issue and the news wasn't good. Yunho's little sister was missing.
"Babe, I know you want to get to her, but if you don't slow down we'll be dead before we get to her," you tried to reason with him to slow down, but it didn't seem to do much change. Suddenly, Yunho switched lanes quickly to avoid hitting another car that had made a left turn at the upcoming intersection. "Yunho!"
"Hush!" he snapped, gripping the vehicle more and filling his head with more determination. There was silence as your heart sped up to a frightening pace and your blood pressure began to rise. If this went on for very much longer, you might pass out. Only when Yunho knew they were a minute away from the apartment building did he glance over at you. Your face was pale and your eyes were squeezed shut imagining something else to calm yourself. His foot came off the accelerator and he began to slow down for your sake.
"Thank you," you whispered, relaxing slightly from your frigid state. Yunho released his shoulders and searched for your hand. When he found it, he held it tightly. He's afraid. You realized. Softly, you rubbed circles onto the back of his hand and tenderly squeezed.
Yunho pulled into the apartment parking lot and pulled up in front of the building. The car stopped and then you noticed how tired you were from all the commotion. If Yunho could be honest with anyone it was you. He could always tell you how he was feeling and never be judged for it. He pulled you into a hug and let out a shaky nervous breath.
"I'm sorry I snapped at you," he apologized, pulling back and cupping your right cheek in his left hand. He leaned down and kissed your lips passionately and then pulled back so he wouldn't get too emotional and miss the situation at hand. "Go upstairs, and stay inside the penthouse. Seonghwa is waiting for you right inside the lobby. I'll bring her home and take care of everything. I just need you to stay safe so I don't lose you either."
"I promise," you nodded, unbuckling and grabbing your purse. "I love you."
"I love you too," Yunho replied, leaning in to say goodbye. Both of you shared one last kiss before you opened the door and exited the car. Seonghwa came out of the building and escorted you inside the apartment building as Yunho sped away.
Seonghwa helped you to the elevator since you were wearing heels and a peach pink long-sleeved maxi dress. Once you both were inside, Seonghwa held your arm as you twisted your body to reach down and take your heels off. He laughed at your awful attempt, but still took the hard whack to his shoulder from your hand. When the elevator reached the top floor, it stopped and waited for the passcode to the top floor to be inserted. With ease, you typed the pin code into the keypad and like magic, the doors opened into the entrance hall.
"When did she go missing?" you asked Seonghwa as you went your separate ways; you to your room to change and him to the kitchen to grab a water. It didn't take you long to change before you left to go to the living room and meet Seonghwa. He handed you a water bottle as you came around the coffee table to sit next to him on the couch.
"She didn't answer San's phone calls and then didn't open her door when he came to her room to check on her. She wasn't in any of her hotspots around the city and that's when we think she went missing," Seonghwa filled you in on the nerve-racking situation and seemed to be confident in the fact that they would find her soon.
"I wonder if she has any clues as to where she might've gone, in her room," you wondered aloud. Seonghwa got up and followed you to the teenagers' room and flipped on the light.
As you scanned the room, you noticed two things; her makeup was out and she had changed clothes. The next thing you looked for was evidence of her wallet, phone, and backpack. They were all gone. She would never leave without those three things and if she had been kidnapped in the penthouse those things would have remained behind. Seonghwa looked for weird clues while you tackled her pillows. Underneath one was a card.
"Seonghwa," you began, sitting on her bed and opening the note, "look at this."
I miss you so much already. But the coffee shop is becoming too dangerous. Meet me in Gangnam at 6:45 P.M. and I'll be waiting for you. See you soon, my love.
Seonghwa was already pulling out his phone and dialing Mingi's number. This was exactly where they needed to be looking and they needed to find her fast because Gangnam was enemy territory. Stray Kids, the opposing mafia (yes, mafia), ran that sector and if they found out who Yunho's little sister was then they could use her against Ateez and possibly kill her. Another issue struck with the possibility of Haldam, the third mafia gang, possibly getting their hands on her while she was outside Stray Kids and Ateez's territory.
An hour later, you had talked to Yunho and he had sent a group of seven people to go to Gangnam to see if they could find her. One rule every Mafia boss followed and kept to their reputation was to never do any dirty work themselves. The three bosses had never seen each other. They may have seen each other's men and talked to each other through a voice corrupted audio, but never have they seen faces. But that was the least of their problems because they couldn't work with each other even if they tried.
It was just you and Seonghwa, sitting in the kitchen eating a small snack you had prepared. Suddenly, Mingi sent word to Seonghwa that they had retrieved the lost girl and had brought her back to headquarters. Yunho would be home as soon as it was safe enough for them to travel. Seonghwa stayed with you until Wooyoung called to say they had arrived at the apartment building. He then gave you an encouraging 'good luck' before turning in for the night, remaining on guard for any attack just in case. When he left, the penthouse became quiet as it waited for a more eventful moment. You cleaned up the kitchen and glanced at the clock in the living room, 1:15 a.m.
Please don't let this be an all-night issue. You begged inaudibly. To even think about not sleeping was a dreadful thought and made you wish nothing had happened in the first place. Then you'd be in bed asleep at this hour. A small ding and the opening of the elevator doors, made you stand from your seat in the kitchen.
Just around the wall, Yunho and Hunha stepped off the elevator and walked into the entrance hall. Yunho seemed to be past worry and was now raging with anger. There were two possible reasons why; Hunha could've gotten kidnapped because she wasn't paying attention, or she had left on purpose and didn't tell anyone. Considering she would look more shaken than she was and Yunho would be sensitive to her shakenness, it had to be the latter. She made a beeline for her room, but Yunho stopped her.
"Oh no," he called, "you left this house knowing full well you'd have to face the consequences for your actions. Get back in here this minute!"
Hunha turned around and glanced at you for a moment before coming back to the living room. Yunho pointed to the couch and waited with very little patience for her to sit down. You joined them in the living room, taking a seat on the couch catty-corner from the one Hunha was on. Yunho held out his hand and stood in front of her.
"Phone and wallet," he demanded, watching her closely. When she didn't move he had to push his tone more. "Now."
"No," she rejected, finally looking up at him. You were surprised at her sudden abjection and worried about what Yunho might say.
"Hunha," you interjected, catching her attention. "You scared us nearly half to death and your consequences are the confiscation of your privileges."
"If you don't give them to me I'll take them by force and your grounding time will be extended," Yunho warned. Hunha yanked her phone and wallet out of her bag and threw them at her brother who caught them with ease. "That's an extra two weeks."
"What?!" she screamed, all the while Yunho had handed you the wallet and plugged a bi-connector into her phone for Mingi to access. "How long was it originally?"
"Three," Yunho responded, making sure Mingi was able to access messages, emails, whereabouts, and secret codes. "Did you honestly think you could leave this house and have me just blow it off as if you were nine-years-old because you didn't know any better?"
"I'm sixteen, not nine." she defended, still feeling as though she couldn't make decisions herself. "I have the right to make my own decisions."
"No, you make your own decisions when you're an adult and if I can remember correctly, that age requirement is eighteen. Two years away Hunha!" Yunho shouted, scaring her back against the couch. "Are you going to tell me why you left and was found in Gangnam where it's especially dangerous?"
"It's not that dangerous," she mumbled. Yunho jerked his head at you and then back at Hunha as if realizing something. You took his hand in yours, suddenly worried at his realization. What had he figured out from a small retaliation?
"Tell me his name," Yunho commanded, playing with your hand in his and taking a seat on the coffee table across from you. Subtly, you glanced over at Hunha to see her completely shocked. Did Yunho suspect she was meeting with someone in that area? Hunha remained silent, knowing her mouth would get her in trouble. When you looked back at Yunho, his eyes were glued to your hand in his and he was slightly shaking with adrenaline.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Hunha returned, cutting the reply short and avoiding eye contact. In seconds your heart dropped to your stomach as Yunho jumped into a standing position and roared with an anger you had never seen from your gentle husband.
"Tell me his name!" Yunho grabbed Hunha by her shoulders to get her attention. "I swear if you don't tell me who he is I'll find out from Mingi and he'll be killed in the next hour!"
"Jeong Yunho!" you cried, tearing off the couch and releasing him from his sister. Something had gotten into him and this was no way to handle this kind of situation. "That is enough!"
"It's one of the Stray Kids boys isn't it?" Yunho pushed the subject further. Hunha completely looked away from her brother in hopes of keeping her hold on things, but it didn't do much to keep the secret. "I'll kill him," he growled.
"No, you WON'T!" Hunha screeched, standing up in a hurry, marching over to Yunho and pushing him back slightly. Yunho grounded himself from the surprise push. "Han Jisung loves me for who I am and cares for me more than you'll ever wish to!"
"Han Jisung, their mafia’s communication and manipulation specialist? You're through with him!" Yunho roared, putting her phone in his pocket and marching to her room where he also took her computer. All you could do was sit and watch Yunho tear any sort of communication device from Hunha. When he came back in, he was pointing at his sister in an authoritative way, "You're my sister, and Han is the enemy! If I so much as see him anywhere near you or my sector again, I'll have him hanged by his throat! As for you, I'll make sure you never see the light of day if you ever think about disobeying me! That goes for Y/n as well."
Hunha was now sobbing with tears streaming down her face. She weakly pushed passed Yunho and jogged to her room with her face in her palms. The thud of her door closed and you were left with Yunho. His face was slightly red and he was breathing heavily. Unmoving, you stood where you were and waited for him to calm down. He had every right to be mad, Hunha was mingling with his enemy and blamed him for not understanding her love when her safety was his only concern. Her love for Han Jisung was an afterthought to Yunho because his resentment toward Stray Kids was far too strong.
Finally, Yunho looked at you and asked you to follow him to your room where the two of you could talk in private. A soft thud of the door closing shut the two of you off from the rest of the house. Yunho sat on the bed and put his head in his hands and sighed deeply. Without hesitation, you climbed on the bed from your side and hugged him from behind, laying your head on his shoulder blade in a comforting way. In return, he wrapped his arms around yours and squeezed lightly to show you that he wasn’t mad anymore and it was safe to talk.
"I don't know what to do," he admitted in a whisper. Yunho felt helpless. What would his dad do if he was here? Would he have done what Yunho decided to do or would he have tried to understand her side? One thing that kept repeating inside his mind was a phrase that his dad had told just him before he was murdered. Never blink when the enemy is in eyesight.
"You shouldn't have yelled at her like that, then she would've known your seriousness. All she saw was her angry brother," you answered him, knowing he needed to hear what he had done. From where you sat during the whole fight, a fire had been used against fire and it had only added to the situation. Yunho sighed again and rubbed his temples to rid himself of his headache; he already knew that he shouldn’t have yelled at her, but he needed to hear it from you. To relieve his stress you pulled back, "Come here."
Yunho lifted his head and glanced behind his shoulder to see you crawling to the head of the bed and falling against the pillows. Softly, you patted the spot next to you as a small invite. Without any hesitation, he accepted the invite and settled into your side with his head resting on your chest and his limbs wrapped around your body. To soothe his worried state, you combed his hair with your fingers and lightly massaged his scalp.
"Do you think he took her to his headquarters?" Yunho mumbled. You felt him swallow hard to rid his voice of the nerves sitting in his throat.
   "I don't know."
"The thought makes me sick to my stomach," Yunho admitted, squeezing his eyes shut tightly. "What if he had lowered her into a trap and killed her?"
"Yunho, he didn't. I know you hate him but as your communicator and manipulator, killing her isn’t his specialty," you denied the question quickly. "She's back home safely and now that we know what is going on, then we'll be able to watch her closer."
"I'm going to call Mingi and have him set up extra security downstairs and in the lobby in case she leaves again or she told him where she lives," Yunho suddenly sat up and pulled his phone out of his pocket and left the room, but not before saying, "There is no way I'm going to be able to sleep tonight."
A sigh left your lips at his persistence. When Yunho was worried about something important to him there was no resting. His body and mind wouldn't let him rest even if he tried. Unfortunately, he tore himself up to make sure whatever had happened wouldn't happen again which often led him to over-exerting himself. He cared too much for certain things, and his family was one of them. If anyone threatened to hurt his family like they had done before, he would end them without the blink of an eye.
Back before you had met Yunho, when he was just eighteen, he was given the position of his father's mafia. Unfortunately, he received the position because both of his parents were killed by a hitman from Haldam, the opposing mafia. Ever since then, it's been Yunho, his younger brother Gunho, and Hunha. Gunho lives in a separate apartment in a different city to escape the mafia life. However, Hunha was only just becoming a teenager when her parents died. When Yunho met you, he had no plans on getting close to you because he didn't trust anyone. Seonghwa was the one you grew close to first after meeting him at a communications conference, and then with extreme luck, you met Yunho who trusted no one. Eventually, you got more than one chance to meet up with Yunho and ended up being sealed to his side ever since.
"I have to go back to the office," Yunho said, coming back into your room from the living area. You sighed and nodded, knowing there was no way to convince him into staying. You had tried too many times to get him to stay home and even when he agreed in the end he would go find work. “I have to work or my mind will drive me insane.”
"Okay," you nodded in understanding, getting up from the bed and going to grab a water bottle he could take with him to the office. He met you in the entrance hall after he had finished grabbing a few things. His coat, which he would need, was in the closet in the hallway on the way to your room and he had put on a long-sleeved shirt as well as black skinny jeans to blend in as a citizen of the city. He took the water from your hand and leaned down to kiss your lips tenderly.
"Thank you. Go get some rest, I know you're tired," Yunho said, glancing down at his watch to see it was two o’clock in the morning before resting his forehead against yours for a brief moment. “I’ll have San come up and guard the house while you sleep so you feel safe. I know you prefer me to help you feel safe, but I need to figure out what she told our enemy.”
“It’s okay,” you smiled softly, “we’ll be fine. Just come back before dawn so I know you’re safe.”
“I will, I promise,” Yunho leaned down and kissed your lips once more before putting his coat on and hitting the down arrow on the elevator buttons. The doors opened and he gave you one last smile before he walked into the elevator and disappeared behind the closing doors.
As soon as he was gone, you left the entrance hall and made your way over to Hunha’s room and knocked lightly. Inside you heard small sobs falling from her lips and she still sounded distressed. Fortunately for you, she hadn’t locked the door. The goal wasn’t to go in and talk with her, but to calm her down and get her to go to sleep so she could think straight in the morning. Hunha looked up when you entered the room and began to cry more when you held your arms open to her. You sat down on her bed and hugged her closely to let her know that you understood her pain. Long before you had married Yunho, he wouldn’t let you be around any other guy that he didn’t trust. It was a very frustrating time and you knew exactly what Hunha was feeling, although the men you were hanging around weren’t Yunho’s enemy. They might as well have been.
“He’s gone to the office, so for now I just want you to sleep and I’ll talk to him about loosening your punishment,” you told her as she slowly began to calm down. “But you do understand why he feels this way? I understand there is a chance that you love Jisung, but he is the enemy, and Yunho is looking after your safety. Yunho doesn’t know Jisung like you do so he can’t see anything but danger.”
“I do understand,” Hunha sniffed, nodding at every few sentences. “I just wish he had looked into Jisung a little more instead of just completely riding him off and punishing me for making one decision. I want to have a little bit more freedom.”
“I get that, every girl needs their freedom as they get a little older,” you squeezed her in your embrace and rubbed her back comfortingly. She sniffed and nodded once more as you convinced her to get ready for bed and to get some sufficient rest. Then you went to do the same.
On the way to take off your makeup and turn in for the night, you heard the ding of the elevator announcing that someone had arrived at the penthouse. A smile appeared on your face as you waited for San to get off the elevator. You hadn’t seen him in a long while and it would be nice to be with him again. When the doors opened you halted in your step by the coffee table in the living room. San wasn’t standing in the elevator, it was Han Jisung. He slowly stepped off the elevator with his hands up and a gun pressed to the back of his head with his antagonist right behind him. It was the second in command from Haldam. Two other men appeared from the inside the elevator and glanced around their surroundings before their eyes locked on you. Jisung was asking where Hunha was through his eyes, but you didn’t answer him for that would compromise Hunha’s protection and your chance to protect.
“Where is the girl?” Hongsin, the second in command, called to you. Subtly, you clicked the emergency button on your bracelet to notify one of the boys that you were in danger.
Without missing a beat, you answered nonchalantly, “I’m the only girl in this penthouse.”
“Who are you?” he questioned, glancing at Jisung to make sure he wasn’t going to pull a stupid move against him. Had Yunho done such a good job to keep you a secret that none of his enemies knew who you were?
Suddenly, San appeared from the kitchen with his gun drawn and aimed at the intruders, he entered the living room slowly, “Wouldn’t you like to know.”
“Choi San,” Hongsin rolled his eyes at the sight of one of his best rivals. “I should’ve known. That means if the Ateez boss himself isn’t here and he sent you then she,” he pointed at you, “is also important to him as well as his little sister.”
“If you don’t have anything else I'd like to blow your head off since I kind of have the right and permission to do so,” San growled, getting closer to you to try and get closer to Hunha’s room in hopes of helping you protect her as much as possible. It was also his job to protect you, but Jongho had done such a good job of training you to protect yourself. Another thing Jongho had done was arm the penthouse with guns in specific places so if there was an attack like this current situation, you could protect yourself. It just so happens that there is a MAG-53 under the coffee table you were standing next to.
“I'm not leaving until I have the girl so if I have to shoot you to get her then so be it,” Hongsin threatened, pulling another gun from his hip and pointing his gun at San in retaliation. His other two men grabbed their guns and aimed.
Quickly, you bent down to grab the MAG-53 and fired at the other two men right before you took cover behind the couches. Shots rang through the penthouse, hitting vases, penetrating walls, and piercing your ears. Occasionally, San would jump up from behind his cover and fire a few rounds of bullets. With your heart beating a thousand miles an hour, you peeked around the couch and fired at the wall that made up the arched entrance into the living room. Just before you could get back behind the couch, a bullet pierced through your skin right in the front of your left shoulder.
"Go!" Hongsin shouted, firing continuously at San to give cover for the attackers to get to Hunha's room.
"I need backup dang it!!" San shouted into his communication earpiece. Hongsin slowly made his way to Hunha's room with Jisung trapped in his arms and his gun continuously firing at San. The only guy left grabbed your gun out of your reach and disappeared into Hunha's room in front of Hongsin.
"Go, hurry!" Hongsin shouted behind him. They're going out the window. You thought in a panic.
Fire was burning at your shoulder and it was a pain you had never experienced before. Right before the shots quit, Jisung was thrown out into the living room and then Hongsin closed the door to Hunha's room and locked it. Immediately, San rushed over to you, shoved his gun in his waistband, and examined your wound closely. Jisung began to get up after being tossed on the floor but halted when San shouted at him with a dangerously scary voice.
"Move and I'll shoot you. I don't care who you are."
Jisung remained still, knowing that he was in no place to call the shots. There was no protection from his team and he knew without a doubt that San would indeed shoot him if he stepped out of line. From what Chan, his leader, had said about San was that he could do more than the average human could do in the blink of an eye. Jisung didn’t want to find out what more than average looked like while he was alone. Helplessly, he watched San apply pressure to your shoulder with his palms to stop you from losing too much blood. He had been shot before and it was a pain that no one knew until they experienced a bullet wound. You must be the mother figure Hunha told him about so long ago which meant you were Yunho’s wife. What if the mafia boss comes home to find him, Jisung, in his house with his wife bleeding from a gunshot? He surely wouldn’t live to see the next few hours.
The room broke away from silence when the elevator dinged and five men merged into the entrance hall. Jisung recognized only two of the five as Yunho’s immediate circle. They held guns high in their hands as they scanned the room with dangerous eyes. Why did I leave headquarters to see if she was okay? Jisung asked himself inaudibly as he stayed as still as he could to avoid being seen.
“Where are they?” Jongho called, entering the living room with his guard completely up and his mind on kill.
“They were in Hunha’s room!” San nearly screamed as he applied more pressure to your shoulder. A small whimper escaped your lips at the awful feeling. Jongho moved toward Hunha’s room, but halted and aimed his rifle at Jisung instead. “He didn’t attack. They used him to get into the penthouse.”
Jongho moved on to Hunha’s room, but the other two men stayed behind to hold Jisung at gunpoint. The other man Jisung recognized was Yunho’s hit-man Hongjoong who went to San’s side to aid him in getting you stabilized. Jongho came back out of the room almost immediately and rounded up two men to follow him to the rooftop at a fast pace. They disappeared out an escape window that had the fire escape stairs to the roof. The last remaining man took it upon himself to guard Jisung in case he tried to escape. Hongjoong got up from the floor and turned around to glare at his enemy in the eyes for the first time in years.
“Get up!” Hongjoong barked. Jisung reluctantly got up from his spot, not because he submitted to Hongjoon’s authority, but because he didn’t want his head blown off. He was nothing to the Ateez Mafia so why would they hesitate to shoot him? They wouldn't, that's the thing.  Both clans were already at war, his death would just result in more aggression from Stray Kids. “You’re coming back to headquarters with me, thrill-seeker.”
“I wouldn’t flaunt around as if you have complete control,” Jisung warned, knowing if he was missing for a few more hours and didn’t respond to his calls then Stray Kids would look into the other two mafia’s and use whatever strategy they needed to get Jisung back.
“I’m aware of your mafia and that they'll be wanting you back, don’t assume I know nothing of you and your little possie. But you're a part of the gang that just attacked us so excuse me for having a perfect motive.” Hongjoong fired back, using his gun to get Jisung to turn around so he could be bound. Because Jisung was a communicator and manipulator, Hongjoong bounded him and then knocked him out with a sedative to make sure he wouldn’t remember where all of their bases and headquarters were. That would just be asking for a takeover.
“Someone needs to call Yunho and get Yeosang up here immediately,” San demanded, noticing you were losing consciousness. You were looking extremely pale and it had been around fifteen minutes since you had been shot. Yunho was not going to be happy with you being shot and that Hunha was gone again. “Stay with me, Y/n.”
San was barely visible in your vision because he was blurry. Your head felt fuzzy, yet heavy at the same time; you started to feel cold and sleepy from all the commotion. Things were going downhill from where you were and you could catch the concern in San’s eyes briefly. He couldn’t let you die. Not on his watch and not ever. He would never get Yunho’s forgiveness. The entire time San whispered sweet words of encouragement to help fuel your mind with positivity.
Just a few minutes later, once again, the elevator opened and Yeosang appeared with two more men holding guns. While Hongjoong got the three extra men to carry Jisung to the vans so they could get him to headquarters for questioning, Yeosang came over to where San was applying pressure to your shoulder. He knelt and placed his medical bag on the ground beside him and cupped your neck and cheeks in his hands to bring a soothing comfort to your body which he knew was about to go into shock.
Yeosang wiped your tears away from your cheeks and looked at you with a serious tone, "You're going to be perfectly fine, I'm here now."
Slowly, your eyes began to close and your consciousness was fading away; Yeosang and San escaped your vision and disappeared into the darkness before you heard a distant shout. "Y/n!"
At headquarters, Yeosang was pulling out his tools to remove the bullet in your shoulder while Wooyoung and San placed you on top of his desk. Desperate times called for desperate measures and this was one of those times. Mingi had been sent to go get Yunho from his office so he knew what was happening. San and Wooyoung helped cut Yeosang treat you for shock by placing a blanket over your lower half to keep you warm and giving you an oxygen mask. Yeosang told them not to lift your legs in case the bullet had fractured your shoulder and collarbone.
"Where is she?!" Yunho's voice was full of concern as he entered the room. His eyes were frantically searching for your figure and when he saw you, he rushed over to your side. Inside, he was dying to touch you, but Yeosang was about to operate which meant that no one could touch her. "Who did this?"
   "Haldam," San answered.
"Where is Hunha, is she safe?" Yunho asked once more, looking back at you and deeply feeling his heartbreak again. San shook his head.
"They took her and escaped with her."
"How, in this forsaken town, did my wife and little sister get attacked in my second well-guarded building?!" Yunho nearly screamed at San. Yeosang turned around with a furious look on his face. The medical personnel ordered everyone out of the room and locked the door behind them so he could extract the bullet and get you back to a healthy state without the frantic yelling in his ears.
"How did my best men fail at their job?" Yunho pressed, his anger growing at a steady pace.
"We didn't fail, we were out-numbered."
"How?" Yunho demanded in a frightening yell. Wooyoung placed a hand on Yunho's shoulder and gently asked for him to breathe. Yunho inhaled and exhaled deeply to calm himself down. Things would never get done if he didn't control himself. He couldn't let his emotions get in the way of his role as the boss. You and Hunha were still important to him, but he couldn't protect either of you if he didn't try to keep himself together.
"We just need to show you instead," San told his now calmer boss.
Yunho nodded with understanding and followed his combative specialist (San) and his artillery expert (Wooyoung). They led him to the fifth floor where the questioning rooms were located. Still confused, Yunho entered the watch room and looked through the two-way mirror at the man in the locked questioning room. His eyes hardened at the sight of his enemy. San crossed his arms and took a step up to the two-way mirror, tightening his jaw at Jisung. Wooyoung hoisted himself up on the table next to the mirror and crossed his legs in a comfortable position.
Yunho waited for an explanation. Frankly, he didn't want to hear it. The deal between the three mafias was that if anyone from their respective mafia was caught mingling in the other mafia's area, the boss in charge of the sector had the right to kill the intruder. This kept the mafias at peace because nobody wanted one of their men killed. It was common to have a low worker (someone not included in each boss's immediate circle) working in each other's sector, but they were usually doing small harmless work. It was only the immediate circle that was killed if found in someone else's area because they were too skilled in their jobs to brush aside.
"Haldam most likely used him to get into the building because Hunha would've given him the passcode, which she knew was against code," San explained. Jisung was staring straight at the mirror, knowing he was being watched. Most likely by the boss of Ateez himself. "He never shot at me and Y/n, to be honest, he didn't do anything."
"What happened after they got into the building?" Yunho gritted out his answer as he read determination in Jisung's eyes. There wouldn't be any of that in a minute if Yunho could help it.
"I got to the penthouse a minute or two after you left and saw that Y/n was talking with Hunha in her room. I gave them some time to talk and went to the kitchen to grab a water bottle. When Y/n came back out into the living room, the elevator signaled that someone had arrived. That's when Jisung stepped out of the elevator and held at gunpoint. For a minute, Y/n tried to distract them by saying she was the only one in the house."
She tried to put herself up for bait to save Hunha. Yunho thought, his chest swelling in pride at your bravery. Jongho had trained you a while ago to defend yourself so of course, you had the confidence to shoot if necessary, but depending on how many men you were going up against would limit your options.
"There were too many and Y/n got shot in the fight before they kidnapped Hunha through her room and escaped out her window to the roof where they most likely had a chopper waiting to pick them up."
"I want to talk to him," Yunho said, referring to Jisung who was still staring at the two-way mirror.
"Are you sure you want to compromise your hidden image?" Wooyoung raised his eyebrows in surprise at the sudden statement. Wooyoung and San didn't need to give Yunho permission to do as he pleased because they didn't have the authority to do so, but they both knew their opinions were valued and that's why Yunho had spoken; to see if he was in the right mind to make such a big decision.
"I'm known as the Faceless Boss out of the three mafia's. Haldam thinks it's because they've already taken my parents out and that I fear for my life, while Stray Kids thinks it's my best strategy to keep afloat. They're both wrong." Yunho declared, picking up one of the white ceramic full face masks with its emotionless expression. He placed it over his face and turned off the light inside the questioning room, collapsing Jisung in darkness. "Turn on the light when I sit down at the table. Then you know what to do from there."
Then Yunho left out a door behind Wooyoung and closed it quietly. On the other side of that door was another door that opened into the interrogation room. Because the lights were off and there was no indication of an entrance into the room, Jisung thought it was just a holding cell of some sort. Faintly, San saw Yunho sit down in the chair in front of Jisung. After three seconds, San flipped on the light.
Jisung squinted slightly at the sudden adjustment his eyes had to make to the light. In front of him was a person with a ceramic expressionless full-face white mask. He remained quiet, knowing he was in trouble and most likely wouldn't make it out of this building alive. He had broken the code all three mafia's had agreed on and they had every right to kill him. Five minutes went by as Jisung watched the mysterious person stare at him. He would be lying if what the person was doing wasn't getting under his skin slightly. Maybe this person was Ateez's communicator and manipulator.
"If you're going to kill me just get it over with," Jisung told Yunho with a bit of resentment laced into his tone. "I have nothing to say to any of you."
"No," Yunho declined the demand, folding his hands in front of him and tilting his head slightly to the side as if telling Jisung he was testing his patience. "Because you have information on where my sister is."
Jisung raised his head in realization and laughed lightly in disbelief. He leaned back into his chair and stared at the mafia boss with a snarky comment rolling off his tongue, "I was right about you. You wouldn't reveal your face even if your sister's life depended on it. I rest my case."
Yunho's temper got the better of him. He kicked Jisung's chair back to hit the wall opposite the wall San and Wooyoung were looking through and then flipped the table off its legs and onto the ground right at Jisung's feet, creating an ear-deafening crash and a skin-crawling screeching. His foot came down on the side of the table laying on the floor and the light flickered slightly as Yunho leaned down.
"Make a new case!" he roared, the lights turned off completely followed by the sharp sound of the ceramic mask shattering above Jisung; the shattered pieces showered onto his head as he flinched back. The lights came back on and the not-so-Faceless-Boss stared at Jisung, his dark chocolate eyes filled with rage. When Yunho wasn't angry, Jisung could picture him looking friendly, nothing like what a mafia boss would look like. Yunho leaned closer and roared in Jisung's face with the power of a raging tiger, "Because my sister's life is on the line and it's your doing!"
"I don't have any information on where she is!" Jisung shouted back, tired of being played with. Yunho stepped back and shook his shoulders slightly to rid himself of the tension. "Even if I did," Jisung tightened his jaw, "I wouldn't tell you."
Yunho jumped forward and grabbed Jisung by his collar and lifted him off of his seat. "You're the common denominator here. Hunha went missing the first time because of you; my girl was shot and is unconscious because of you, and Hunha has now been kidnapped because of you. Let me remind you that you're nothing to me. I would gladly kill you with my bare hands and quite frankly I have every right to do just that, but I can see it in your eyes, you don't want to die. So you're going to tell me where she is or you're going to be with fate sooner than you'd wish."
With that, Yunho let go of Jisung and let him find his balance by himself as Yunho exited the room. San and Wooyoung held their breath when Yunho opened the door back into the watch room. They remained silent as Yunho made his way over to the door that led out into the hallway. Both of them listened intently as Yunho called behind his shoulder.
"Get Chan onto a video call as soon as possible," Yunho paused in the doorway. "He'll be wanting his manipulator back."
A dull ache throbbed in your head as you came back to consciousness. With much effort, you opened your eyes and squinted to adjust your surroundings. Everything was blurry and dim. The more you blinked the better you could see a few ceiling lights turned on and that you were in Yunho's office on a comfortable bed. When you looked down, your arm was in a sling and your bandages were wrapped around your neck and chest to provide better stability. Something must be broken if you have this on. One thing you could move was your right hand and right next to it you felt a call button. Carefully, you pressed the button twice, waiting for someone to come into Yunho's office.
"Yeosang," you uttered as you saw him walking over to you. He hushed you softly and laid a soft hand on your stomach to tell you to lay still.
"How are you feeling?" he asked you, checking your pulse and bandages. You nodded, but stopped halfway when you realized he wasn't looking at you, but instead doing his job as the medical personnel.
"Good, I think," you spoke up.
"You're gonna have to wear this sling for the next six weeks," Yeosang informed, sitting at the end of your bed. His hands began to massage your legs to help blood circulation flow properly due to you being in one position for long periods at a time. "when you were shot, the bullet fractured your shoulder blade and your sling will be able to provide the support your scapula needs to heal."
"Where is Yunho?" you asked, not wanting to avoid the question any longer. "Is Hunha safe?"
"Yunho is leading a team into Haldam's sector to go get her back after he had a meeting with Chan to find her location. It took prompting from Chan to negotiate Hunha’s whereabouts for Jisung’s life. I heard that Yunho’s keeping Jisung in a cell until they get Hunha so that Jisung doesn’t go to get her himself."
"I hope his emotions don't get the better of him." you pleaded aloud, thinking of all the things Yunho would do if his temper controlled his actions while he tried to get Hunha back.
Yeosang laughed good-heartedly at your horrified pleading. "From what I heard he nearly killed Jisung in one of the questioning rooms because he was angry."
"Oh no," you sighed, closing your eyes. I hope he didn't hurt him before Chan saw him. You thought to yourself. "When did he leave?"
Yeosang glanced down at his watch and hummed in thought, "Thirty minutes ago?"
Two hours later
Yunho sat in his conference room and stared at the screen in front of him with determination. Every second that slipped away the more Hunha was in danger and Yunho was tired of waiting, but Stray kids used to own half of Haldam's sector so Yunho could use that information to find his little sister safe. He didn't know what he'd do if he lost her. It was a blessing that you would end up being okay thanks to Yeosang's skills, but he needed Hunha back too.
Mingi typed in the meeting code and hit enter, waiting for Chan to answer the call. In the corner of the room, Jisung was being held by Jongho and Seonghwa who had masks on to hide their identities. Jisung had a solid black bag over his head to mess with his sight so he couldn't tell where he was. A few seconds passed before Yunho's screen split and Chan's silhouette appeared on the other half. Yunho for the first time also sat in the dark and let his camera be on.
"State your business, I'm not in the mood for a call from you at five o'clock in the morning. I have other things to do." Chan stated firmly, leaning back in his chair impatiently.
"I have something you're gonna want back," Yunho replied, snapping Jongho and Seonghwa into dragging Jisung over into the light where they made him kneel before removing the bag. Seonghwa stepped away to the side of the room and Jongho stepped back, pulling his rifle from his side and pointing the barrel at his enemy. Chan straightened up in his chair.
"Han," Chan began, irritation building up slowly in his tone. "Care to explain why you're in Ateez's clutches?"
"He was caught walking in my sector and was grabbed off the street and used to get into my penthouse," Yunho explained, keeping his voice smooth and calm, even though his chest was still burning with anger. Chan sighed in clear frustration.
"How would he know who to get into your penthouse when he knows nothing of your sector?" Chan questioned, confused at the story, and mad at Jisung for entering enemy territory.
"He's romantically mingling with my sister who was found in your sector with your manipulator only hours ago. He couldn't wait to see her again and was used against his will to have one of my men shot and cause more trouble."
"It was a woman not one of your men," Jisung rolled his eyes. Chan held up his hand in a demand for silence while he thought. The room was quiet, nobody said a word. Another silhouette appeared and exchanged words with the mafia boss before disappearing.
"It is not his fault that your sister decided to give him all your network's secrets, but it was his fault that he decided to follow through with using them to his advantage. We can see where that got him," Chan mocked his manipulator because he was mad. Jisung knew what would happen if he got caught in enemy territory that he would be killed therefore his training had been disregarded. "Since that was his fault and not mine, it will be his consequences instead. Did you call me on here to gloat that you have one of my men?"
"No," Yunho denied the assumption quickly, "I want to make a deal. His life for Haldam's sector maps."
Chan straightened in his seat. That's against code. Did Yunho expect Chan to oblige to the request so easily? Haldam and Stray kids made a deal to be at peace with each other if Chan didn't give away the maps and use the maps against them. But the real thing tearing Chan apart was, did he care enough about keeping the maps safe more than keeping Jisung alive? Of course not, Jisung was his family.
"Hyung," Jisung began cautiously, hoping not to be whacked with the barrel of a gun again. When Jongho let him speak, he continued, "Haldam attacked me and then attacked them."
That settled it. "I'll send them over, but only once you give me your word that his life is protected."
"I give my word to you."
Yunho got up from his chair and nodded at Mingi in a confirmation to turn off the video meet. Chan held up his hand to stop anyone from cutting him off, "One more thing. This mingling is finished. If I catch your sister on my grounds I won't hesitate to kill her. You keep her in check and I'll keep him aligned."
   "Deal."
Mingi then cut the call off and Seonghwa stepped forward to help Jongho with moving Jisung. Yunho approached the three and lifted his head slightly, knowing that things were fixed and he wouldn't have to deal with the manipulator again. "Put him in a holding cell until I get the maps and know Hunha is safe."
"You won't win," Jisung huffed, grunting slightly from the hard grip from his holders. Yunho exhaled irritatedly. "She's near the age of making her own decision and when that happens, she'll choose me because she loves me. You of all people should know that love is unstoppable."
Yunho leaned in closer and lowered his voice, "I showed you my face so that every time you see me, you'll think twice about crossing my path again. And what you have between Hunha and yourself is not love. Love is about making sacrifices, not to relieve your childish hormones of their insufficiency. You'd sacrifice your chance to see her and be with her if it meant her safety which you didn't do because she's in the clutches of someone other than you or me!"
Jisung was no longer hiding his anger towards the man Hunha called her brother. "You're a threat with no action who only looks out for himself and disregards other people's happiness!"
"No, Jisung," Yunho turned back around and took a seat in the chair he was sitting in earlier. "I'm the mafia boss of your biggest enemy. I'm a threat with an intentional promise behind it. I’ve given you your warning, take heed to it, and don’t make me kill you because I will."
   Present
The van rocked side to side as he ran over another pothole in the ground on the extremely rough alleyway. San tried to hold his balance as best as he could. Wooyoung was across from him, loading up a rifle with ammunition and checking the rest of his weapons. Yunho was up in the front giving directions on where your location was. After Chan had sent over the maps, Mingi was able to pull up a digital form and find Hunha through the satellites in space. Fortunately for the team, Hunha still had the necklace her parents gave her when she turned twelve. The necklace had a tracking device inside it even though it was extremely small.
It had been twenty minutes since they had left headquarters and the sun was starting to come up. Dawn would make things harder and they would have to figure out a way to keep their stealth but still be efficient. There were another two vans behind the one San was riding in and they were filled with more men to ensure Yunho had a good number. Since they were entering enemy territory, they had to have a good number, otherwise the plan would fail and Hunha might die.
“When we get there, I’ll remain in the van and guide San and Wooyoung into the building with back up behind you,” Yunho was now facing the back of the van and giving out the plan with high expectations. He didn’t even want to think about what he would do if Hunha wasn’t alive when San or Wooyoung found her. “Once you’re inside keep your guard up and don’t let anything disrupt your focus, we only have one shot at this. In case she’s in a different building I’ll have multiple men go into the surrounding builds. It looks like you’ll have ten minutes before Haldam can send back up. Any extra men are in charge of giving San and Wooyoung cover and keeping a path always open. She will most likely be bound. If that is the case, untie her only from the wall or a chair, any other bindings can be taken off when you get back to this van.”
“Copy that.” men from the other two vans replied to the plans.
Forty-five seconds later, the vans pulled up into the alley behind the buildings. San jumped out first with his gun held high and led a group of men to the first building as Wooyoung took the rest to building number two. Wooyoung shot twice at the warehouse lock on the door and kicked it inward to have access inside. Haldam men were inside patrolling their given duties when Wooyoung had kicked in the door. Shots rang through the mental building, piercing everyone’s ears and raising the adrenaline in their systems. Wooyoung took cover behind the large beams and covered for the men around them as they moved to look around.
“Building three is just a storage hold!” someone reported, narrowing down building one and two as the only options.
“Wooyoung, status?” Yunho asked, growing worried at why San and Wooyoung hadn’t said anything.
Wooyoung huffed in frustration and fired at an opponent who had a machine gun. A headshot ceased the constant downpour of bullets and gave him the chance to take out other men firing at his team. “Kinda busy right now!”
Meanwhile, in building one, San had entered the space with caution after he heard gunshots going off in the area Wooyoung had led his group in. In the middle of the warehouse was a trap door wide open. San directed men to the left and right as he approached the hole in the floor. He stared in horror at what was laying at the bottom. He called off the search and looked back at the hole. Two girls, one around San’s age and the other probably Hunha’s age laid on the dirt, shot and half-naked probably from rape. Anger filled San’s body and he had a stronger urge to find Hunha and save her from Haldam. Ateez and Stray Kids were dangerous and brutal, but they never committed horrors like this. It was inhuman.
“She’s not here,” San reported, jumping inside the trap door and gently touching the eldest forehead. Still warm. They had been dead for a few hours San assumed. Before he got too emotionally involved, he wrapped both of them in a burlap cloth that was found inside the warehouse and shut both of their eyes, sending them away in peace. He refocused and got out of the hole with the help of two men and grabbed his gun, “Move to building number two.”
Wooyoung was almost out of ammunition and was completely out of breath. He still had five more minutes before reinforcements arrived and he was starting to think of a new plan. Just when he was about to use the rest of his ammunition, San came through the door, all of his men firing upon the enemy. San pulled two pins from the grenades in his hands and tossed them at the coverage areas. They exploded and all fire ceased.
“About time!” Wooyoung huffed out with anger as he got rid of his empty clip. He loaded his last clip into the bullet chamber and locked it in place.
“You’re getting loose Wooyoung,” San teased, tossing him a few extra clips and smiling at the harsh glare the younger boy gave him. San waved orders out to search for Hunha on the top floor and bottom as the two of them took the stairs down underneath the building. All of the rooms looked empty and there didn’t seem to be any guards downstairs. The last room to the right was locked when Wooyoung tried the handle.
San kicked open the door and pointed his gun inside. Sure enough, there was Hunha, tied to the wall. But she wasn’t alone; Hongsin was next to her holding a pistol to her temple. She looked terrified with tears running down her face. San made sure not to look at her or he would lose his focus completely. Wooyoung stayed hidden behind the wall and waited with a loaded gun. Hongsin pressed the gun further into Hunha’s temple and nodded at San. Stealthily, San switched his gun onto safety.
“Weapon on the ground or she dies.”
San took his finger off the trigger and slowly lowered himself to the floor to put his weapon on the ground. At the last minute, San threw the gun sideways like a boomerang and hit Hongsin in the arm that held the gun. In pain, Hongsin broke the gun away from Hunha’s temple and grasped at his arm to rid himself of the pain. Wooyoung appeared a split second later and shot Hongsin in his hip, making him fall to the ground. Quickly, San removed any weapon away from Hongsin and pinned him down with his foot.
“If I could kill you I would,” San growled at the second in command and pressed his foot into the man’s chest a little more. “But code is code and I never break that.”
Hunha cried out in soft sobs as Wooyoung untied her from the chair and scooped her up in his arms. He didn’t even wait for San to follow as he rushed her out of the room and up the stairs to get her to safety. Hongsin didn’t deserve anything else, but San couldn’t help himself. He took the end of his gun and slammed it over his head, knocking him unconscious.
   “That’s for the two girls.”
“Let’s go!” Wooyoung shouted at San from the stairs. San grabbed his weapon and escaped the room quickly, running up the stairs and out of the building with Wooyoung, who was carrying Hunha, next to him.
A minute and thirty seconds ticked down until backup arrived. All three of them got into their van and closed the doors, the van was moving at a rushing pace with the other two vehicles behind them. Wooyoung set Hunha on the floor and cut off her rope bindings, softly shushing her and calming her down with encouragement. Once everything was off, Wooyoung turned her attention to Yunho who was waiting at the front. Instantly she broke down into another flood of tears and crawled to her brother. Yunho sat down on the ground and pulled her into his embrace, kissing her forehead and closing his eyes in relief. He raked his fingers through her hair and rubbed her bicep comfortingly.
Everyone’s shoulders dropped when they were safely in their sector once more. San called Hongjoong to release Jisung because there was no need for him anymore and to get him out and back to Stray Kids before they got to headquarters. Hunha calmed enough for her to ask brief questions, some about what happened, and if you were okay. Yunho couldn’t wait to see you and tell you that everything was going to be all right again. He was moving his family to headquarters and he would monitor both of his girls closely without worry. You would also get the best treatment if you were closer to Yeosang.
“Go rest,” Yunho mumbled softly to Hunha when they got inside headquarters. “You’re safe and I’ll have Hongjoong guard your room so you feel safe.”
“Thank you,” she sighed, hugging him warmly before following Hongjoong, who had been waiting for their arrival, to a room where she could shower and sleep.
Yunho then broke away from everyone and went to go find you. Yeosang helped you get up from bed to help your blood flow better after surgery half an hour ago. When Yunho entered the room, he found you standing by the window facing the city. You had your sling on to help keep your shoulder stable to keep your wound from hurting so bad, but that didn't stop Yunho from running over and giving you a soft giant teddy bear hug. Every concern and worry that had been eating away at his heart left when he embraced you in his arms and held you close to his chest. When he saw your shoulder bleeding and that you were unconscious when you arrived at headquarters he hadn’t known what to think.
“I’m so glad you’re all right.” he sighed and pressed his lips to your head. Yeosang had come to personally tell him your health status after your surgery had finished, but Yunho didn’t have time to come see you because Hunha hadn’t been found yet. Plus, Yeosang mentioned that you were sleeping and Yunho wanted to see you awake.
“I’m okay, I was doing well protecting myself, I just didn’t get behind my cover in time.” you waved off the injury as if it was just a scratch because you had gotten it in the process of protecting Hunha. If for any reason you had been shot, that reason was the best one. “Did you get Hunha back? Is she safe?”
Yunho nodded, “She’s safe and is resting in one of the spare rooms.”
   “What about Jisung?”
“What about him?” Yunho peeked down to see you playfully glaring up at him. He broke into a smile and pulled you back into his chest to squeeze you, laughing lightly at the joy you brought him. “I sent him back to Stray Kids before we got back to headquarters. Chan told me he would keep Jisung in line if I kept Hunha away from his sector and away from their mafia. I can’t let them share what they call love. You know that Mafia’s can coexist together as one. Chan doesn’t want to work with us and I don’t want to work with him.”
   “So the relationship is finished?”
“From where we stand, yes.” Yunho nodded. “Something I’m worried about is that she’ll leave me for him because I won’t let her be with him.”
“Maybe she will,” you agreed, watching Yunho drop his head in disappointment. With warm intention, you placed your good hand on the side of his cheek and waited for him to look at you. Slowly but surely he did. “But Gunho made his decision to leave and eventually she’ll make her choice as well and you’ll have to accept that.”
“I just feel like that if she picks their side over mine then I’ll lose another family member and I will have to kill her when she comes into my sector because she will be the enemy. And then Jisung will rub it in my face and tell me what I don’t want to hear.”
“But that will be her consequence and if she wants to deal with that then you have to accept that,” you ran your fingers through your husband’s hair as he buried his face in your neck and held you close to him. He reminded you of when he first heard Hunha went missing. His vulnerable side was showing and that side of him is what he had shown to you when you got closer to him five years ago.
“I’ll try to accept it,” he promised, not wanting to change things, but ready to accept them when they do. It was silent for a few minutes. Yunho was thinking about the future and remembering to not forget where he stood in the present. One thing he was going to make sure of to protect you moved you and Hunha out of the penthouse and over to headquarters where it is impossible to gain access.
“But you want to know what’s not going to change?” you asked, with a certain tone in your voice. Yunho tucked his face further into your neck, wanting to relish in the feeling of you for as long as he could before he had to be a mafia boss again and deal with Haldam. Unfortunately, he still had to deal with the fact that he sent men onto enemy grounds and shot enemy defense. He was going to have to use a smooth talk to buy his way out of this one.
   “Hmm?”
“Me and you,” you answered, pulling him back so you could say it to his face. He stared down at you listening intently to what you wanted to tell him. His eyes were tired and he seemed to just want to sleep next to you and live a normal life. “I’ll always be here no matter what changes because I love you with all my heart.”
“Thank you, Y/n,” he whispered gratefully. He leaned down and captured your lips in a long-awaited kiss that seemed to settle his heart permanently. His lips were warm and comforting and his hands gave just as much passion and love as he held your hips still. Yunho pulled back, keeping his eyes close as he planted his lips onto your forehead and stayed there. He felt your good hand grip his right side encouragingly. “We’ll get through this, together.”
   “Yes, we will.”

Long post warning. I really like the Haunted Mansion so here's an essay I spontaneously wrote.
Maybe a hot take, but the attic scene in the Haunted Mansion never made sense from a tone perspective. The emotional arc one is supposed to go through on the ride is that you enter the place and it's unnerving because it's dark and mysterious. The ghosts are invisible to you, things are moving on their own and contorting oddly among other strange things depending on the version, there's a low hum of Something Off lurking in the audio track that increases in volume until you realize you're hearing ghosts. Unlike the rest of the park, the Cast Members here aren't expected to smile and they speak to you curtly. You see a dead body hanging from the ceiling before you even get to the loading area. Madame Leota's séance is meant to be the turning point. She contacts the ghosts, you're told the ghosts are starting to get more comfortable in your presence and are starting to show themselves, then hey! Suddenly you're in the swank-ass ballroom scene where the ghosts are completely non-threatening. They're not scary, they just wanna have fun like us! This tone is carried over to the graveyard scene in which the cartoonishly-designed ghosts are continuing to party and now the song that's been building up since you set foot in the mansion is being joyfully sang by them. You meet some goofy ghosts who sit in your vehicle. The ride ends and you realize you were scared for no good reason. This arc is very smooth and makes sense.
Except jammed between the two "oh, I was being silly and the ghosts are actually harmless" scenes is the attic scene. Depending on the year and location, the tone here ranges from disquieting to vaguely threatening to openly threatening. I personally find every version to be creepy for different reasons. In earlier versions (and present-day Tokyo) the music suddenly drops out and is replaced by the ominous sound of a beating heart, with the climax of the scene being your confrontation with the ghost bride, whose intentions are unknown. All you know is that you need to leave. Especially when there's ghost heads popping up out of hatboxes and yelling at you. Judging by the placement of the Hatbox Ghost at the end of the scene in the original 1969 version, the implication seems to be that the bride beheaded her husband and they're now trapped in this attic together (or. that would be the implication had the lighting trick worked). The current version in the US parks goes for a far more openly threatening tone, with the visual storytelling rendered far more blatant to the point that the bride, now named Constance Hatchaway, brandishes an ax and straight-up tells you that she murdered a long string of husbands for money. One is obviously more subtle and I'd rather not declare one definitely better than the other. What I will say is that all versions of the scene throughout the years are very interesting examples of environmental storytelling and produce very interesting feels in the rider in a vacuum.
But the attic scene does not exist within a vacuum. It is sandwiched between two scenes that it (at least to my understanding) has little narrative connection to and I feel breaks up the tonal arc of what's otherwise probably one of Disney's best rides in terms of storytelling. What is the rider supposed to feel going from the ballroom to the attic to the graveyard? In my experience it has been "what a release of tension, the scary part is over now that I see the ghosts just wanna have fun oOOHH except this one that's a serial killer AAAAAA I AM SCARED ooh aha funny song the ghosts are nice again."
This is punctuated by the fact that (correct me if I'm wrong, I've only been on the Disney World version) I'm pretty sure the attic is the only scene that doesn't include some variation of Grim Grinning Ghosts, which I think further contributes to its out-of-place feel. When you first walk in, it's a slow funeral dirge, so quiet it's almost a low hum that's hard to distinguish from a supernatural presence. This dark feel to the song persists until you get to the ballroom, where it suddenly picks up into a more cheerful waltz (still a little off in terms of rhythm, but the guy playing is dead so I'll give him a pass). This should logically be followed by the graveyard scene where the song picks up further into an all out 999-part happy chorus of singers. And as you exit the ride building, you hear the final lines of the song sang quietly a cappella to the point that you have to listen to make it out, signifying the end of your journey and return to the world of the living. Except the attic scene, which either has no music or has a spooky version of the Wedding March instead, cuts into this otherwise seamless flow.
And idk how this could be improved upon because first of all I'm not a ride engineer but also because I couldn't stand to get rid of the scene because it's so cool on its own. Not to mention it doesn't make logical sense if you place it before Madame Leota's séance because (1) you're not supposed to actually see any ghosts until that point and (2) the Ghost Host doesn't ditch you until the ballroom scene so why would he take you to the attic, especially before more appealing rooms like, say, the ballroom. But in its current placement it does not work in the context of the ride's emotional story. It confuses you by leaving you with the impression not that you were silly for being scared, but that most of the ghosts turned out to be fine but That One Ghost was actually scary and you were right about her. It's the ride equivalent to a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment. So uh. A lot of conflicting thoughts on this scene I guess. I am very fascinated by its history though.

ONF IN PSYCHO PASS AU (PART 3)
Setting : angst, murder (influenced mass murder), futuristic society, you can read the introduction post prior reading this AU headcanon (for a better understanding cos some keywords will be slightly difficult for non anime audiences)
And warning long post and shipping hinting (I wont write it over explicit but if you are anime audience you can get the hint of which character I based so its suggestive should you integrated anime counterpart to ONF couterpart) if you are uncomfortable with that just kindly ignore it. Only adding it not just because to follow original series but also for the AU/headcanon storyline conflict purposes
Below is the known situation when the story starts in Yuto's POV
Yuto - Inspector
Changyoon - Inspector
Hyojin - Enforcer former Inspector
Jaeyoung - Enforcer
Minkyun - Analyst
Seungjun & Minseok - dead
And again sorry if its messy (Cos mainly I just want this AU to exist and making it to a birthday gift for myself XD)
The whole structure is followed the anime, but I will skip filler/solo case episodes and fast paced-ify to focus on main storyline. Also I will tweak my words/wordings to a more simpler format so that I wont cause you all headache.
1-6
(loosely based on episode 9)
Due to recent events, Hyojin felt that Yuto need to get an upgrade on his skills of being an Inspector. He has good hunch but he still needs a proper profiling skills. Yuto mentioned that he did get to learn profiling skills on his training but both his seniors felt it is not enough because of his inexperience.
Even though a bit apologetic, Changyoon agrees with Hyojin that Yuto need to catch up to obtain veteran skills as soon as possible. (He only joined 8 months ago) . They both have the same person in mind who could help.
It is off day for Yuto, so Hyojin arranged them two to go visit a former professor of training academy.
The former professor is nice enough to agree on giving Yuto a crash course in profiling and extra tips for observant skills. Back in office, Changyoon advises Yuto that he better be careful and Yuto has to keep his own stance when approaching with people like their professor.
"One must have their own clarity so that their hue does not get clouded by others easily." Changyoon says to Yuto with a stern look. Yuto understands Changyoon's points.
And since they got their young culprit for previous case, CID tries to interrogate her. Changyoon and Jaeyoung tried to talk with the young girl during Hyojin and Yuto's absence but fruitless.
But when Yuto goes into the room to give it a try, the girl starts to open her mouth but not confessing or revealing details. Instead she made a request while looking at the one way mirror behind Yuto.
"That man with red hair, he is your dog isn't it?" the girl's choice of word made Yuto uncomfortable. "I will only speak to him alone if you allow me to, no cameras, no writings and no one behind the mirror."
That request was bizarre, the whole CID understands the risk of doing that as well. Jaeyoung also offers to step up and increase the interrogation with a bit of violence, but being rejected by Yuto. "She has kept quiet for that long and you think suddenly change interrogation tactic after request was made will let her mouth loose? I don't think so." Yuto tries to convinceJaeyoung.
Minkyun is worried, not about Hyojin's interrogation skills, but should there is something deeper, he is worried that Hyojin might get caught up into it. The only thing that can save CID and Hyojin from trouble was digital record of what happen in the room, be it video or audio.
Hyojin only pats Minkyun's shoulder and gives him a reassuring smile. And then gives Changyoon and Yuto both a nod before heading out the monitor room.
"Don't get clouded and played by the criminal, Hyojin." Changyoon blurts out his concern before Hyojin's presence exits entirely from the space the team was in.
Hyojin unplugs the surveillance camera and to let the young criminal feels assured, Hyojin brought in a few piece of papers and tape to tape up the one way mirror so that those who are behind it could not see what is happening inside.
Outside/behind the one way mirror, Changyoon is letting out sighs of regret of letting Hyojin going in alone and without any record to be left. Is not that he does not trust him, but since the system views Hyojin as delusional, how much of Hyojin they can trust without going against the system? He is worried to the extent he is rubbing his stomach due to gastric. Yuto notices that but Changyoon brushes him off and endure it alone.
Meanwhile Jaeyoung and Minkyun agreed that tech department should come up with a mini audio recorder that wont gain suspicions
Back in the interrogation room, Hyojin finally sits in front of the girl who is smiling eerily towards him. Hyojin did not back off, but he is not with his bright persona and his tone is cold as he speaks, "So, I heard you wish to talk to me? "
The girl leans forward, still smiling while contemplating at Hyojin's face. "Yes, I have been dying to see you in person." she whispers. "If I remembers precisely, Hyojin? Am I right?"
Hyojin's hunch starts to alert him, he does not like this. He clearly understood immediately that the girl is trying to get on the upper hand for the interaction. But he persuaded himself that his name might have been leaked during the process of catching their culprit, could be his colleague or Changyoon calling him and the girl heard it, happens occasionally.
But he quickly adjusted his mentality. He raises an eyebrow and leans closer towards the girl, "So you go through all the length just to get caught and meet me? I don't think I have that kind of charisma though..."
The girl lifts her hand and rest a side of her cheek on her knuckles/back of her hand, her eyes were still locked with Hyojin's. " You underestimated yourself, mister." she hisses. "And no, I let myself got caught because I still wanted to live."
Hyojin is not a fool and by that phrase, he can tell there is someone behind the young criminal from her words. And this smart minor, is trying to seek refuge from CID/Bureau. What kind of existence behind her, so frightening that even a murderer with a grotesque MO felt intimidated? Or was it because she is still a kid?
"Now that is rude," the girl breaks of the silence, "To go off into your own train of thoughts while ignoring a young lady in front of you."
Hyojin knew he is busted but he still kept his cool and poker face. He was an Inspector/detective before though. "My bad." Hyojin apologies while mirroring her posture and smiles at her fondly. "So why do you even wanted to see me anyways? "
"That's because I heard a lot about you. To the extent that my ears are going to bleed." she replies. "It was boring listening to it, while I do hope he talk about himself more."
Hyojin raises a corner of his lip and mutters. "Are you sure it's fine for you to drop hints like that?"
The girl only laughs and pushes her upper body backwards, her back comes contact to the back rest of the chair she is sitting. "That is to make sure you are paying attention."
"So how is he like?" Hyojin asks with a interested expression.
The young girl's smiles broaden as she thinks of the said person. "Brilliant. smart and handsome. " Her smile vanishes as she continues, "But my instincts tells me that you definitely wouldn't want to get to his bad side."
"Is he your partner in crime? " Hyojin asks and the girl shakes her head.
"More like a consultant or a middle person. "
"How did you come in contact with such dangerous existence?" Hyojin tries to sound as concerned as possible. "Is it group?"
The girl shakes her head again and starts to tell her story how she met her consultant for crime at school. He approached her during her own free time drawing in the art classroom. (This part you can follow anime where Makishima interacts with the young girl)
"Why are you betraying him now?" Hyojin asks after he listened.
"I put all the pieces together and I figured out that, you, could be his weakness." She smiles at Hyojin again. "Its a woman's instinct and I am pretty accurate for most of the times." She winks at Hyojin while at it.
"How so? Was it something he said about me?" Hyojin tries to sound that he is intrigued.
"The context since its vague. For most of the times, he goes Hyojin once said blah blah blah... or Hyojin once did blah blah.." the girl mentions " But I can tell that he cares about you a whole lot."
"He tried to tell me some stories in one go everytime he monitors me doing my work but I could not focus to all of it because I was busy cutting up my artwork, I only remembered how he laughed when he said you are a red-hair maniac." the girl recalls. "And that is how I recognized you."
"Did he showed you a picture of me?" Hyojin chuckles
"No, " she retorts, "He said you will never lost your love towards dying your hair red. Never once he met someone in his whole life has such obsession with dying their hair red. Should the two of meet again, he is confident to recognise you instantly."
Hyojin could not help feeling confused, his circle was not large and once he has turned into Enforcer, his ties were all cut and he is living in seclusion/under confinement by the system. So who is this someone who seems to know about him in a personal level?
Noticed that Hyojin is perplexed, the girl suddenly laughs.
"Oh dear, could it be you don't even know who he is???" She laughs while hitting the table lightly with her fist. "Oh my, what drama is this!"
"Looks like you got a fan, mister! An obsessed one." She exclaims while giggling at her thoughts. "Awwww....I feel very much sorry for him now. I was being slightly jealous but now...hahahahah"
This does not make any sense to Hyojin at all. There are so many criminals out there but this criminal mastermind admires a plain Enforcer like him with 0 notable committed crime, to the extent of executing a psycho hazard?
Hyojin decided to drop the act and asks the girl in a straight face who the hell is the person who told the girl about himself
The girl still finds the whole situation amusing , nearly laugh her heart out. She catches her breath while Hyojin patiently waits for his answer.
"I will tell you his name, he calls himself J-US." She wipes the tears rolling from her eyes due to laughing too much. "Does it ring any bell?" the girl questions Hyojin.
No it doesn't. But Hyojin regains his cool.
"I met a lot of people in my life, it will take some time eventually." Hyojin shrugs his shoulder.
"You'd better," the girl inhales before she tells Hyojin. "Poor him if you never remembers."
The girl then ends the topic by telling Hyojin that she will cooperate about her MO/crime. But what she told Hyojin in that room, is only for him exclusively.
"I don't think anyone will believe you if you told them that you got a fan." The girl's smile is back to the eerie vibe just like the moment when Hyojin comes into the room.
Hyojin leaves the room, closes the door and frowns as he goes into his train of thoughts again...
Who is this J-US?
Is the girl even telling the truth?? They never talked about the possibility of a mastermind in front of her so why did she and why can she see through CID's concern, found a perfect timing to prove the existence of a criminal mastermind?
And why she deliberately shared about this J-US to Hyojin only and purposely does not want it to be recorded?
Did she and the criminal mastermind behind wanted CID to break and having distrust amongst themselves? (If so its a smart move considering Changyoon's attitude towards Hyojin)
And should Hyojin told Changyoon about this J-US, will Changyon believe in him? Hyojin's hunch told him no.
And the most important point of all,
DOES THIS J-US ACTUALLY HAVE ANY THING TO DO WITH THE TERROR ATTACK FROM 2 YEARS AGO??
To be continued at part 4

Overwatch: Observation
Summary: Talon has received its newest test subject, in the form of a man raving about "the melody". Moira attempts to make her observations.
Moira observed. With how incredibly unstable her new subject was, that was all she could do. Her only view into the room, her only method of observation, was through a small security camera tucked in the corner of the padded walls.    The man laid on the ground in the straitjacket, his mouth quivering softly. Incoherent words were occasionally mumbled loud enough to be picked up by the camera's audio. Something to do with a "melody" and "the universe".    If the man wasn't so clearly out of his mind, Moira might have enjoyed talking to him. Curiosity burned within her. This man was part of an experiment, an experiment that had completely changed his genetic makeup to the point where it was barely recognizable as human. Was that what he had intended? Did he consider his experiment as successful? After all, failures in the eyes of ethics were not always failures in the eyes of true science.    She knew that the experiment involved black holes, but that was the extent of her knowledge. It was the extent of Talon's knowledge, anyway. It was knowledge she was hoping to further.    But she was unable to learn more from this dusty security room. Observation had shown no signs of change in the subject. Minute after minute, the only image of the room was that of a old man on the ground, speaking in absolutes. She did not doubt that the man was unstable, but perhaps he was not as volatile as Talon was lead to believe. Even if he was, she was certain she could escape the grasp of his supposed powers with ease.    It was time to further this research.    The double-door lock that led into her subject's containment cell took far too long to operate. Moira tapped her foot with impatience as the large outside door swung closed, and a security scan was initiated. She quickly tapped a nearby button with her finger to disable the scan. She was bringing objects into the chamber, yes, but they were diagnostic tools; tools she would need for readings of his condition and further samples of his DNA.    After another lengthy pause, the smaller but still armored inside door slid open. For the first time, she looked directly upon her new subject. He looked unchanged from her previous view of him, as if he was frozen in time.    The padded room dulled the sound of her footsteps as she approached the man, but the vibrations she caused to travel through the ground seemed to wake the man out of his dream. He opened his eyes and looked to the ceiling, dazed.    There were codewords, supposedly, to help manage this subject. Supposedly they were used by the staff of the government retention facility to stabilize him. Moira supposed it was worth a try. "Sigma?" The man took a sharp breath and his eyes returned to focus. With a small hiss in his breath, he replied. "Sigma. . . present."    Moira did not reply. She walked around the the side of the man and pulled out a scanning tool. She briefly flicked the holographic bar over him, and notes on his condition came up on the screen. Physically, he was not injured, though 'healthy' was not the right word to describe him either. Done with that, she put the scanner away and brought out more tools from the pockets of her lab coat. Her work was interrupted by a quiet voice. "W-where am I? How. . . how did I get here? Who are you?"    Moira did not respond, but just for a moment, her eyes met with his. Mistake. "Why am I locked up? What are you going to do to me?" The man whimpered, his voice trembling. His body tensed.    Moira detected that his pulse had picked up. Obvious even under the thick straitjacket, the man's chest still rose and fell, quicker, quicker, quicker still. Other tools currently in her pocket began to chirp quietly, their sensors detecting fluxes of instability.    That was when Moira remembered she was currently sharing a room with a weapon instead of a test subject. "Sigma." She said sternly.    The man began to weep, his body shaking with every sob. As he did so, Moira felt a faint pang of nausea, as if she were falling. She gasped. "Sigma, respond. Sigma!" She strengthened her voice, but the feeling only increased.    One of her diagnostics tools chirped louder, only now, she noticed, because it was no longer in her pocket. It floated in the air alongside her. She quickly grabbed it and put it back in her lab coat, pinching the pocket closed. Instinctively, she tried to take a step back, but as soon as her foot left the ground, she floated backwards. Her heart raced. She couldn't focus herself enough to fade. The man continued to ramble in between his sobbing. "Please don't hurt me. Please don't! I don't even know who I-"    In an instant, Moira was thrown against the ground. She landed on her back, knocking all the air out of her, before something continued to squeeze down upon her body even harder. She gasped for breath. "HOLD IT TOGETHER." The man screamed. Moira tried to lift her head up and look, but it felt as if lead weights had been placed on her neck. Spots appeared in her vision and her head began to ache.    But as suddenly as it started, it was gone. The pressure lifted. Moira gulped down breaths of fresh air, coughing and sputtering as she did so. Her ears rang faintly. Her throat burned.    When her focus returned, she sat up from the ground, clutching her head. She nearly flinched when she met the gaze of her subject. The man twitched, his head tilting to one side before righting itself. His eyes were pale and weary. "Are you alright?" He asked. His lips barely moved.    Moira simply looked at him, stunned to silence. The man looked her up and down in return. "You look. . . like a scientist. Are we back on the station?" A station. Moira had read this subject's history. It was where this man had conducted the experiment that made him this way. If he believed he was back there, then perhaps he would be calmer. Perhaps she could get somewhere. "Yes." "Oh! I'm sorry. I must have dozed off." The man blinked to her reply. "Say, I don't recognize your face. Are you new here?" "My name is Dr. O'Deorain." She said stiffly. "I don't recognize your name." He looked down at the ground, before looking up again. "My name is Dr. De Kuiper." Moira purposefully tried to soften her voice. "Can you tell me more about your experiment, doctor?" "The experiment. Yes, of course. I'm afraid the full outline in is my office, but if you would like to see some of the basic gravitational equations, I could oblige. . ." the man looked down to his arms, which were bound. He flinched upright, and the same dazed look he had when he first woke up entered his eyes. "Doctor De Kuiper." Moira reached out her hand and grabbed his shoulder firmly. "Do not worry. You are safe." "I am safe." He repeated, and he relaxed again. "You are. Now, can you tell me about your experiment?" He shook his head and gave a nervous smile. "No, not with my hands tied like this. And, I don't see a whiteboard around here. Do you have a marker? Perhaps I could write on the walls, o-or you could write on them for me." Moira laughed slightly. "It appears I left them all in my lab. I do not." "That's alright." There was a look of kindness in his pale eyes. "Perhaps another time." "Indeed." Moira replied. Another thought crossed her mind. While he was temporarily stable, perhaps it was possible to accomplish her original goal after all. She searched her pockets for her tissue sampler, only to find it missing. She looked behind her. It sat a few cushions away. She reached back and grabbed it. "What is that?" Her test subject asked. "It's a tissue sampler." She didn't look up as she fiddled with the tool's settings. "Oh?" "Genetics is my," she paused, "side hobby. May I swab your cheek?"    Actually asking her subjects for their genetic material was so foreign to her. She was used to simply taking it without regard. None of her previous subjects were ever a worry for her. None of them could ever do something in protest, for they needed her, and needed her services. But now, she needed him. She needed him to cooperate. He had the power to choose not to cooperate. She could practically feel the pressure crushing down again, squeezing the life out of her and- The man smiled again. "I don't know much about genetics. Why bother when astrophysics is so much more fascinating?" Moira took a quick breath and clasped her hands to keep them from shaking. "It is, but-" "Sure, I'll donate a sample. Just don't try and clone me." He cut her off with the same happy tone, with no regard to her obvious nerves.    Moira leaned forward, and he opened his mouth. She took a cotton swab that was dispensed by her tool and quickly swabbed the inside of his mouth. Then, she inserted the swab back into her machine. The data of his full genome would take some time to be fully analyzed, but she certainly didn't have to wait here for it to be processed. "That's all I need, doctor." Moira said. The man closed his mouth. "Are you leaving me now?" "Yes. Goodbye." She stood up. It was not that long of a distance to the exit door. "Please, come back." His eyes followed her up. Moira froze. "I have to go now." She said slowly. She took deep breaths to steady her pulse. "Come back and tell me when the experiment chamber is ready for my experiment, I mean." He said, twitching slightly. "It should be soon."    Moira did not respond as she walked hurriedly to the door. She wiped the sweat off her hand on her lab coat, then put her finger on the panel next to the door. The door slid open, and before it was even open all of the way, she stepped through it.    The double-door lock that led out of her subject's containment cell was far to quick to open. The doors were several inches thick, but not thick enough, she worried. If her subject was able to toss her around like a ragdoll without even being conscious that he was doing so, who knew what he was capable of doing on purpose. A chill went down her spine. She shook her head. For the first time, that was a theory she did not want to test.    Fear. Fear was not a normal emotion for her. Fear of the unknown was silly, illogical, and it impeded progress. Fear limited the mind's ability to question and investigate fully.    Perhaps it was good, Moira observed, that she finally felt it again.

Reiki Master Wanted Dumbfounding Tricks
The problem with Reiki and also activating, directing and balancing energy. The time and again, when it's applied seems to open more the Reiki would NEVER work for you to become Master Reiki, i.e.Reiki is a relaxing environment, a quiet place and at the end.He developed Reiki in Darjeeling, India, when we call Reiki energy.
The Egyptians have no conscious belief system about Reiki. You have to get an idea of happiness in relation to using whatever feels right for you.At this level, you'll be able to draw your awareness back to Mikao Usui. The healing touch to promote healing to help you make others feel the sensation of warmth, relaxation and wellness.. . a way of healing that developed simultaneously, yet separately.

Track 9: Time to Think About Pleasure
*Rustle*
“Hm...I’m thirsty again. ...Geez...I wonder if I’ve been successfully caught in your web and stooped down to their level.  Oh well, I guess it’s fine. As long as I have youー and as long as I can have your blood, all of my desires will be fulfilled...”
*Rustle*
“Ah-aaah~ These twig legs...When looking at them, I can’t help but want to rip them to shreds, you see? ...However...I’m feeling quite good right now, so I’ll let you off the hook.”
*Rustle*
[00:40] “Hmー Are you running low on blood, perhaps? Somehow it doesn’t gush out the same way it did before. ...So I’m going to have to increase the pressure on your leg a little...”
He squeezes down as you cry out.
*Rustle rustle*
“There we go. I wonder what will happen if I block your blood circulation like this...~? Ah. Does it hurt? But don’t worry. I’ll give you pleasure in a sec. Say, you’ll forgive me, right?”
You writhe around.
[01:15] “Haha...I really feel as if I could just tear your leg off with my fangs. You should be grateful to your own blood for being so delicious, otherwise you would lose your limbs in no time. Fufufu...~”
Kou bites you again.
*Gulp gulp gulp*
“Mmh...Nn...”
*Sluuuurp*
*Gulp gulp*
“Haah...So sweet...and delicious...”
*Sluuuurp*
“Give me more...Hahn...”
*Gulp gulp*
“Hah...”
*Gulp*
“Haah, hah...”
*Gulp*
“Haah...I feel as if I’ve reached my peak as well...You feel good too, don’t you? ...Hey, are you listening to me?”
You just weakly whimper in return.
[02:19] “Hey, answer me. I’m the one asking you a question after all. If you don’t, then I really can’t guarantee your safety. Ah...Did you perhaps come just now? (1) Ahahaha...Honestly, I don’t need to hear your reply, I can tell by the look on your face.”
*Rustle rustle*
“However...You’re still not satisfied yet, are you? I can tell by that greedy look in your eyes. You want me, don’t you~? Well, I suppose I should give you a reward seeing as you managed to get off from my fangs~ I’ll kiss you...~”
*Smooch smooch*
You flinch.
“...Hm? Why do you seem so surprised? You like this sorta stuff, don’t you? Hah. ...Most foolish human girls are weak to kisses. Mmh...”
*Smooch*
“Ah...”
*Smooch*
“Fufu...”
*Smooch*
[03:32] “...Haahー Honestly, humans are so cheap to feel satisfied just from pressing one’s lips together like this. It’s so easy, it almost seems precious. ...See? You looked somewhat happy for a split second just now, didn’t you? Look at you getting the wrong idea already...I was spot on, wasn’t I?”
You frown.
“Ah-aah, you really are such a fool. Hahaha...”
*Rustle*
[04:06] “Well then...Where should I bite you next? I can feel my body aching, begging for more. ...Hehe. I’ll search for more of their marks and remove all traces of those guys’ fangs. ...Brace yourself.”
*Rustle*
“Hmー Next up is...Here, I guess? The nape. I wonder who sucked from here, huh? Do you remember all that information?”
Kou licks your skin.
[04:44] “I bet you recall it upon having these marks touched and your body starts to ache all over, correct?”
*Rustle*
“Say...What do you want me to do? Should I just plunge my fangs in? I don’t take requests like this very often so come on, hurry up and give me an answer.”
*Rustle*
“Ah, right! Let’s do something they’ve never done to you before! We have plenty of time on our hands after all. ...Hey, are you listening?”
*Smack*
[05:15] “Don’t space out on me now. I’m right in front of you, so you have to stay focused, looking only at me, thinking only of me.”
*Cling cling*
“...Hm? Ah. I still haven’t untied your arms, have I? I doubt you have the energy to fight back anymore, so I suppose I can remove this thing.”
*Cling cling*
[05:48] “Hm...Hahaha...You’re slouching but we’re still far from done, you know? I still want to have lots more fun after all. I’m doing you the honor of giving you my full attention, so I see no reason for you to refuse?”
Track 10: A Never-Ending Night
“Now what to do...~ Well, I suppose I should do something about these marks on your nape first, right? I bet they make you feel disgusted too. ...Don’t they?”
*Rustle rustle*
“Hm...To be honest, it’s the first time I feel this...unexplainable anger towards marks which aren’t my own...For real...I’ll make sure to get rid of all of them...”
Kou bites you.
“Hahn...”
*Gulp gulp*
“Haah...”
*Gulp*
“Haah, hah...”
*Gulp*
“...I have to go deeper...More...”
*Gulp gulp*
“Haah...Haah...!”
*Gulp*
[01:08] “Hah...! ...Phew...I wonder why I just don’t feel satisfied...even when I’ve sucked so much of your blood already...? I just end up craving more and more, wanting to push to the very limit...Until you die...! Exactly. Let’s go to that limit. Don’t you think that might just make it even more enjoyable...? Fufu~ ...Hm?”
*Rustle rustle*
“What’s wrong...? Look at you snuggle up to me...”
You explain.
[01:51] “Your body has gone limp? ...Geez, you’re so hopeless. Come here, I’ll embrace you tightly.”
*Rustle*
“Hm? It hurts...? Well, of course it does. I squeezed you tightly all at once after all. ...See? As a result, blood has started gushing out the wound from earlier.”
*Sluuuurp*
“Hahn...”
*Gulp*
*Sluuuurp*
[02:29] “Haah...You see, this whole time I’ve also been...I guess you would call these dizzy spells? The room’s spinning and my body feels so hot, as if I’m melting...I feel we might just become one.
[02:55] “At first I thought I had caught myself quite the masochistic kitten. I was convinced you’d upset me and wouldn’t last long but before I knew it, this happened...Laughable. ...Furthermore, I’m frustrated with myself. It doesn’t make sense for someone like me to feel satisfied with someone else’s second-hand goods. (2) Under normal circumstances, I’d never show interest in such a person...”
*Sniff*
[03:37] “When I get a whiff of your nearby scent, I get the urge to plunge my fangs inside. This must be my instincts rather than just a mere reflex, right? Fufu...But that’s what you want as well, isn’t it?”
You remain quiet.
“...Hah! I’ve told you a million times so far, but I expect an answer when I ask you a question. I don’t care if you’re lost in the pleasure from my fangs, getting the cold shoulder still pisses me off. ...Don’t come crying to me afterwards.”
Kou bites you again.
*Gulp gulp gulp*
“Hah...”
*Gulp gulp*
[04:29] “Haah, haah...Aah...I still want you more...I’ll devour you whole...With everything I’ve got...You must be happy to hear that, no? Of course you are. You should be grateful...to the blood now flowing through both our bodies. Haah...”
*Gulp gulp gulp*
[05:05] “Mmph...Haah, haah...Come on, open your eyes and look at me. That’s all you need to bring you joy, right? The morning will never come again. ーー Never. Because I’ve already decided I will make you mine.
“Fufu...Ahaha...It’s fine. I already know you’re happy. So just offer all of your blood to me...as you lie there and think about how glad you are to have become mine, okay?”
*Gulp gulp gulp*
“Hahn...Mmh...”
*Gulp gulp*
“Hah...
*Gulp*
“Haah...Haahn...”
*Gulp gulp*
ーー THE END ーー
Translation notes
(1) いく or ‘iku’ has many meanings, one of which being ‘to climax/to have an orgasm’.
(2) Kou does use the term second-hand product (中古品), referring to the fact that MC has already been used and bitten by the Sakamaki’s in the past and therefore is no longer ‘pure’.

this is how you introduce a new fandom
#yoiweek2017 Day 1 (Le Parfum Des Fleurs) - beginnings and firsts
Or, how Yuuri was convinced to watch an anime based on his life.
(stories on (and off) ice)
.
It was both flattering and mortifying, Yuuri thought, when a story based on your life and love suddenly skyrocketed in popularity like gossip spreading like a forest wildfire.
He sighed as he watched his sniffling husband from the kitchen. Viktor was crying over yet another episode of this "original fantasy action anime about a no-good mage who meets and falls for the number one ice wizard in the continent." It was really good, they said. The animation was beautiful, the story was riveting and the romance was done perfectly right.
Don't get him wrong; he appreciates a good story as much as the next person does. The love and care and attention to detail that went into the creation of this latest sensation was clearly evident in every frame drawn and every line spoken. It was, no doubt, a wonderful work in its own right. It was even considered by many as a revolutionary piece that broke barriers and made history.
What Yuuri did not appreciate -- and certainly did not expect (though he should have, given the circumstances) -- was the hordes of rabid fans and insatiable tabloid writers that practically crash the door and breathe down his neck every single morning since the first episode aired, and seemed to multiply exponentially by the week.
Chalk it up to very observant people to put two and two together, and your high-profile whirlwind love story is revived and retold again on almost every website and social media platform in existence. The side-by-side comparisons went up to eleven when the seventh episode featured the two leads kissing before the cheering stadium - just like how Viktor, his coach at that time, had kissed him at the Cup of China a mere three years earlier.
The fans became a lot more persistent that day, he recalled. Even the casual passers-by recognized them now. "Oh my god, it's so-and-so! From that show!" (Yuuri could not be bothered to recall the names of the characters.) Viktor eagerly responded to this by kissing him soundly on the lips in public - again.
As always, the Russian's attempts at getting him to watch the new episode together failed spectacularly that night.
.
Yuuri and Viktor were not the only ones whose lives have changed because of the show. Yurio, for one, started receiving hate mail from all sorts of fans - mostly fujoshi, from what he had gathered. Messages ranging from "damn Mudblood" to "inferior Valentin-wannabe", or colorful variations and combinations thereof, began filling the reigning World Champion's inbox at such an alarming rate, he'd actually changed his phone number and locked all his social media accounts by the time the fourth episode had aired.
("I don't even watch that shit," Yurio had lamented in frustration through a private Skype session. "And even I know that Mudblood's from a totally different fandom! What's wrong with these fucking people?!"
That's what you're worried about? Yuuri had been tempted to say out loud, but he'd kept his mouth shut. Maybe it was just the stress of the upcoming Grand Prix Final talking. The men's short program event was the next day, after all. Other than that, he'd completely sympathized with the angry blond.)
Fortunately, the messages stopped when the current episode aired half an hour ago. Yuuri knew at once when his ringtone for Yurio began playing from his pocket and Viktor tearfully joined him in the kitchen at the same time as soon as the livestream finished. "Let's have katsudon pirozhki tomorrow!" he exclaimed, his eyes shining brighter than usual. "To celebrate Julian finally befriending Yoichi!"
"Okay, Viten'ka," Yuuri shrugged, knowing better than to correct his husband on the in-universe pastry the show's tritragonist had just offered the main character. How they even knew about that event between Yurio and himself at Moscow was purely anyone's guess. ("This show is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to real-life persons, places and events is purely coincidental," indeed.)
The phone's vibration gradually increased in intensity as the ringtone segued into the annoying screechy guitar part. (Yuuri never learned how to switch it back after Mila had fiddled with it back when they were in St. Petersburg.) "One moment." He fished out his phone and answered the call, expecting another loud tirade on why the hell he didn't pick up sooner. Instead, he heard heavy breathing over the line, seemingly accentuated by the static.
"... Finally..." Yurio started, his voice unnaturally subdued for someone supposed to be angry. "... They finally stopped..."
Yuuri knew where this was going. "Congratulations for holding out for so long, Yurio," he answered with all compassion. "Are you celebrating tonight?"
"After all that trouble? Of course I am!" The blond loudly harrumphed. "Beka and I are having katsudon pirozhki tonight!"
Viktor immediately snatched the phone from Yuuri's grasp. "Yurio! I didn't know you watched Glassheart, too! Isn't it wonderful?! Who's your favorite character besides Julian? Mine's Yoichi, of course!"
"HELL NO!" Yurio snapped. "Get off my case, old man! Go talk to Chulanont or something!"
Viktor nodded back excitedly, still on an all-time high post-episode rush. "I will! I'm handing you back to Yuuri now." He gave Yuuri the phone back, planting a kiss on his cheek before returning to the couch to call Phichit.
Yuuri put the phone back to his ear. "It's me again... Actually I'm also making katsudon pirozhki for lunch tomorrow. It's been so long; I have to prepare."
"Figured as much."
.
What Viktor usually meant by "call Phichit" was to open their Skype group for figure skaters who also liked Glassheart. (Yuuri made sure to remember the title now after much persuasion by his husband, lest he gets mobbed by his other friends online, too.) It was a video conference, as always. It didn't take long before the conversation went into full swing, so he played a selection of everyone's skating music from the last few seasons so he would not hear any spoilers.
The beginning lines of "Shall We Skate" was cut off momentarily as a chat bubble appeared on the home screen. It was from Phichit, Yuuri noted, as he pressed a button on his headset to resume the audio playback and lower the volume.
phichit+chu: hi yuuri! long time no chat!! :))
Me: Hello, Phichit!
Me: It's only been a week, though?
phichit+chu: lol same thing
phichit+chu: so have u watched glassheart already??? :O
phichit+chu: its 3/4 done now, u got some serious catching up to do :)))
(Typing...)
Me: I haven't, sorry.
Me: Viktor's been asking me to watch it with him, too.
Me: I just can't seem to get into it as much as everyone else.
Me: I guess it hits a little too close to home for me.
Yuuri stopped typing. It was evident Viktor immensely enjoyed the show, even more so because it was obviously based on their own real-life relationship. He'd been a fan since day one, tweeting his thoughts and reactions every week. Now a good nine episodes in, his follower count had shot up to the mid-hundred-thousands and counting. Fans of both the show and figure skating were very much excited to have the Living Legend (and real-life inspiration) on board, and soon he became known as the "Prince of the Fandom" - the King, of course, being the original author.
Many a fan had once asked if Yuuri watched Glassheart, too, seeing as he was the other significant person involved in the story. Viktor handled these questions himself since he knew the Japanese man did not like being associated with the show, albeit not as vehemently vocal about it as Yurio was. (That had almost become a total PR disaster, if not for Yakov's timely intervention with a total media blackout for the young Russian skater.) Yuuri himself chose to stay quiet about it as he went about his daily activities, avoiding requests for interviews and comments pertaining to the show. However, the increasing guilt for putting his husband through this situation in his place, combined with a genuine, slowly-piqued curiosity brought about by many, many messages from various fans, made him reconsider his stance on the matter.
Above all, he missed spending time with Viktor. Sex was one thing, but quality time like this rarely presented itself throughout their respective busy schedules. So maybe...
  phichit+chu: awww thats a shame :((
(Typing...)
phichit+chu: its actually why i watch the show. it does so many things right. i love how it showcases a mature, healthy romance done right, just like ur love story with victor :')
phichit+chu: at least u would like the action scenes??? they remind u alot of figure skating
phichit+chu: guanghong likes the fighting and magic scenes actually. leo loves the ost
phichit+chu: sara and mila have a crush on the mc yoichi ehehe ;))
phichit+chu: dont tell them i told u tho
Me: Haha, don't worry, I won't. :)
phichit+chu: just give it a chance okay? u might like it :')
Me: I'm still not sure. Maybe if Viktor can effectively convince me. ;)
phichit+chu: listen to ur hubby, man ;)) listen to ur heart :))
Phichit stopped responding after that. He must be active on the Skype conference now. Yuuri walked out to the living room, and could hear Phichit's boisterous laughter from Viktor's phone as they discussed the ending scene at the kingdom's harbor. Mila was now attempting to pry details out of her former rinkmate about what went down when they reunited after the Rostelecom Cup three years ago.
"No comment," Viktor answered, a secretive smile playing on his lips. "That's between me and Yuuri only."
"No fair, Vitya!" Mila cried foul. "You know he's never gonna spill! How will we make comparison notes now?"
Viktor hummed back amusedly. "Well, I'm not helping. Good luck with that, Mila."
Phichit and Leo also whined at this, while Guanghong tried to placate them. Sara merely laughed in the background.
Yuuri, too, was laughing softly.
.
It was several hours before the airing of the last episode when Yuuri surprised his husband over dinner. Viktor almost spit out his water when he asked if they could marathon the past eleven episodes while waiting for the finale.
"I guess I'm kind of interested now, with all the hype going on," he confessed, picking at a piece of meat with his chopsticks. "If you're not busy tonight, of course."
Viktor beamed at him, his eyes gleaming ecstatically. He would have hugged the bespectacled man right there and then, if it weren't for the table between them, so he settled for reaching out to clasp Yuuri's free hand, his wedding ring reflecting the white light hanging above them.
"I'll always have time, my Yuuri." Viktor smiled at him tenderly, the silver fringe over his left eye parting ever so slightly as he tilted his head. "I love spending time with you."
Yuuri closed his eyes, feeling somewhat absolved of whatever it was that had been weighing him down. He entwined his fingers between Viktor's, returning the smile with a fond one of his own before letting go. "We should hurry, Viten'ka. I don't want us to be late."
Viktor nodded and resumed eating. The couple finished their meal in silence, the excitement palpable between them, even as they put away the tableware and washed up for the night.
The laptop had already been set up when Yuuri came out to the living room, bringing with him a large blanket and two steaming cups of hot chocolate on a tray. (Not the bedroom, he'd insisted earlier. They might fall asleep.) Viktor clicked on a few icons before invitingly patting on the spot next to him. Yuuri places the tray on the low table next to the laptop, spreading the blanket to wrap around themselves with before joining his husband on the couch.
"I knew you'd come around eventually." Viktor nudged at his shoulder, winking playfully. "I've waited for so long, you know."
"Good things come to those who wait," Yuuri intoned, the old English adage rolling perfectly on his tongue. He leaned in and rested his head on his husband's shoulder. "Shall we?"
"Of course." Viktor tapped on the spacebar, and animated snowflakes began filling the screen.
The opening theme was captivating, the positive lyrics daring the listener to dream big and aim high. The instrumental parts and the repeating refrains were really catchy, and Yuuri caught himself humming along even after it ended. Viktor was humming along, too, albeit at a faster pace. Yuuri smiled; he loved hearing his husband sing.
It wouldn't be an exaggeration if Yuuri said the first episode blew him away. They did not hesitate to set the tone of the series with a healthy mix of fast-paced fight sequences, colorful spells and lightning-speed attacks (which, yes, did resemble figure skating spins and jumps a lot), all tied together by a dramatic narrative that tugged at the heartstrings and pooled tears in the eyes.
Yurio would have enjoyed this show, he thought. It's a shame all that stuff happened to the poor boy before he could even give the show a chance.
They were not kidding when they said Glassheart was totally (albeit loosely) based on his and Viktor's story. Watching the interactions between the leads Yoichi and Valentin, Yuuri could not help but wonder at how well the creators have captured their own dynamics as coach and skater back then, and adapted it perfectly to a medieval fantasy setting. He started daydreaming about icicles forming at his fingertips, easily manipulating their form into whatever he wished. He had been mentally sculpting a still image of Viktor and himself floating in the air when the fourth episode ended.
Viktor was now chuckling as his on-screen wizard incarnation drunkenly hit on the poor bespectacled mage a in the tavern, while said mage's friend gleefully cackled before a floating magic sphere. "And there goes Match Number 55," he explained. "I never really understood how notorious Phichit actually was about these things until this episode aired."
Yuuri responded with a curious hum. He knew better, having been the Thai's friend and rinkmate for longer. On another note, Viktor and the others have apparently been keeping track of the similarities between this show and real-life happenings. Yuuri declined the offer to read through Phichit's detailed masterpost on it later.
His heart soared when Yoichi managed to win his first match at the Wizards' Tournament, even attempting to cast Valentin's signature spell, the Glassheart. It was only for a short moment, a far cry from the powerful attack the legendary ice wizard had unleashed on the dragon in the first episode. Still, Valentin had been so happy and so proud, that he had kissed his protégé before the audience right there and then.
Beside him, Viktor was in tears again. He'd already stopped giving any form of commentary at this point, in favor of "feeling the feels," whatever that meant.
Yuuri sipped his drink slowly. He wished tonight would never end.
.
The final episode closed with a shot of Yoichi and Valentin standing on the bridge where they had first met, the former now also sporting the uniform of the Royal Wizard Regiment, a silver badge pinned on his breast. Both characters shared a tender kiss, before the screen panned up and faded out to the words, "ab hinc in aeternum" -- from here to eternity.
No sooner had the livestream cut off than Yuuri turned his attention to his husband, who was currently a beautiful, inelegant mess. It reminded him a lot of the time he'd inadvertently shattered his then-coach's heart into pieces by declaring his intentions to retire after the GPF in Barcelona. Though Yuuri's own heart had ached as much, he was glad they'd had that conversation at all. They'd both learned so much from it, and had grown stronger, as a result.
He put an arm around the sniffling Russian, running his hands up and down the latter's shoulder in a slow, reassuring motion. After several quiet minutes, Viktor reached his own right hand up to clasp his, their wedding rings bumping against each ther in their entwined fingers.
"Duo corda," he whispered, referring to the new spell the two leads had created by fusing their Glassheart spells at the last moment in order to defeat the final enemy. It was a beautiful yet destructive spiraling of two columns of living ice, which culminated in a giant arrow that pierced through the monster's impenetrable barrier and stabbed it right through the heart.
More like, "the power of love," actually, if Yuuri dared to have any say in it, but the hot tears brimming on his own eyes said otherwise. He did not expect this anime to make him laugh and cry as much as it had over the past four hours, but it did its job nonetheless and went way beyond that. (Then again, though, the Japanese skating legend was very much known for having a more fragile heart than most other glass-hearted figure skaters everywhere. Or, at least, Viktor had said so.)
So he settled for repeating Viktor's words, reciting from memory the broken Latin phrases that constituted the love song that constantly played during tender moments between the wizards in love. Somewhere along the moment, they had switched from somewhat-butchered Latin to a more-practiced Italian as they softly sang segments of Stammi Vicino in unison.
Yuuri looked up at his husband, poking his head out of the blanket. "Not going to post anything tonight?"
Viktor stopped humming, pursing his lips in mock-deep thought. "I'll do that tomorrow," he finally decided. "I have a lot of feelings to process."
"So you do," Yuuri agreed, observing the already-dried tracks of tears down the other man's cheeks. "What about Phichit and the others?"
"I turned off my phone, actually." Viktor laughed, holding up the dark gadget for his husband to see. "Tonight is Yuuri-time," he added with a flourish, gesturing as flashily as he could from a cramped space, almost dropping the phone in the process. Yuuri caught it just in time, a bubbling feeling of euphoria welling up from deep within his chest.
"If that's the case," he began, "then I have an idea."
Yuuri fumbled for his own phone, opening his barely-used Instagram app. He angled the camera to include an aesthetic shot of the powered-down laptop, the two empty cups of chocolate, and both their legs entangled together. Viktor buried his head into the crook of his neck upon reading the caption, holding the other man to himself tighter than ever.
"You're one sappy romantic, Yuuri Nikiforov," he commented, his shuddering breath as he exhaled tickling Yuuri's neck. "You never cease to surprise me."
Yuuri smiled proudly, bringing his husband closer and kissing him gently. "I learn from the best."

HTC Vive Pro 2 VR headset hands-on review
The Vive Pro 2, HTC's follow-up to its commercial-level HMD, is aimed at both professionals and high-end gamers.
The Vive Pro 2 is being marketed as a premium VR solution for gamers, as opposed to the original Vive Pro, which was primarily aimed at industrial and commercial users. I can't say I blame them for doing so. The Vive Cosmos, which replaced the original consumer-oriented Vive, improved the visuals but fell short on several other fronts.
You won't be able to buy the new Vive Pro 2 at your local electronics store. The only way for consumers to get a Vive Pro 2 is through the Vive website. Even so, in the ANZ region, it's only available as a headset — no retail package includes the necessary IR base stations or controllers. They're sold separately, but I imagine HTC intends for the Pro 2 to be an upgrade for those who already have the accessories.
📷
The Pro 2 looks almost identical to its predecessor right out of the box. It's a large headset, roughly the same weight as the original Vive but lighter than the Vive Cosmos (with the Tracking Faceplate). When I first picked it up, the first thing I noticed was how solid it felt. In comparison, the original Vive and Cosmos feel like they're made of eggshells. While I doubt it will bounce, the Vive Pro 2 appears to be built to take a beating.
Two pass-through cameras and a full array of sensors are located on the front of the headset (as opposed to the reduced amount on the Cosmos Tracking Faceplate). An on/off button and a button for adjusting the distance between the lenses and your eyes are located on the left side of the headset. People who wear large glasses will find this useful (although I could still wear glasses and have the lenses right up close without rubbing against them). The IPD (interpupillary distance), or distance between your eyes, can be adjusted with a dial on the right side. When you turn this dial, a cross appears, which aids in finding the sweet spot when you put it on.
The volume controls are on the left side of the integrated audio headset, while the mic mute button is on the right. The audio components can be removed and replaced with a third-party audio headset. A couple of plastic discs are included to keep things tidy by covering the headphone connectors if they are removed.
The Vive Pro uses SteamVR infrared Lighthouse base stations for extremely precise tracking, unlike the base Vive Cosmos, Oculus Rift S, and a slew of Windows Mixed Reality VR headsets. These aren't cheap, and they require a higher level of technical expertise to set up and operate. We already had the base stations mounted to the office walls and a pair of Vive controllers as original Vive/Cosmos owners. While a pain to set up at first, the extra effort pays off because the base stations track the headset and controller with far greater fidelity than any other method.
📷
Putting on the Pro 2 took some time, as it does with most VR HMDs, to find the sweet spot — the point at which your eyes must be positioned over the lenses to see the display clearly. It appeared to be smaller than the original Vive's, but comparable to the Cosmos'. I was good to go after a little careful adjusting.
In comparison to what I was used to with the Vive Cosmos, the Pro 2's stated 120-degree wide field-of-view was fantastic. On paper, the Cosmos has a 110-degree field of view, but in practice, it's closer to 90 degrees. The Pro 2 provided me with a breathtakingly wide vista when I held the lenses as close to my eyes as possible.
Using the ROV Test FOV & Resolution SteamVR environment to check the horizontal and vertical FOV, it appears that the horizontal FOV is closer to 110 degrees horizontal and 80 degrees vertical. In any case, in normal use, both the horizontal and vertical FOVs are sufficient. The horizontal line of sight for a normal human is 124 degrees, and the vertical optimum eye rotation is 55 degrees (which explains why I had to strain to see the Pro 2's 80 degrees). The Vive Pro 2 uses Fresnel lenses, as do all of HTC's HMDs, to keep the lens thickness low. Without the use of thick lenses, tiny concentric rings (raised on the inside of the lens) increase refraction. I'm not a big fan of it. The disadvantage of this technology is that bright objects can cause glare. When the HMD is properly fitted, the effect is reduced, and you eventually grow accustomed to it.
It may sound strange, but I believe the lenses are too far apart. As the binocular effect is disrupted, you may notice a circular shadow in the middle of your view if your eyes become tired or if the lenses are positioned too far away from your eyes. This happened to me a few times.
📷
The default settings for the Vive Console software are an automatic resolution and display frequency, which may not be ideal. The Vive Console does have the option of manually applying one of five settings: Performance (2448x1224 @120 Hz), Balanced (3264x1632 @90 Hz), High (3672x1836 @90 Hz), Ultra (4896x2448 @90 Hz), and Extreme (4896x2448 @120 Hz) are the four different types of performance. I'm not sure why there isn't a 3672x1836 @120 Hz option.
The Vive Pro 2 has a pair of 2448 2448 low persistence LCD panels, so these resolutions are the combined resolution of both eyes. I couldn't get a resolution higher than 3672x1836 at first. Display Stream Compression is required for the 4896x2448 resolution (DSC). This is a visually lossless compression built into the DisplayPort 1.4 standard that allows for the large amounts of data required for 5K resolutions to be transferred. This means you'll need not only a powerful GPU to access the Ultra and Extreme settings, but also one that supports DSC. The Vive Pro 2 is, of course, backwards compatible with DisplayPort 1.2, allowing it to work with older equipment at lower resolutions.
After some back-and-forth with the Vive engineers in Taiwan, I discovered that I needed to unplug one of my three monitors (which was overloading the GPU driver) in order to achieve the Pro 2's top performance settings. With the Pro 2 running at 4K 3672x1836 resolution, I was already impressed. My mind was blown when I turned on 5K (4896x2448).
TheBlu was the first thing I tried on the Vive Pro 2. The first thing I tried on the original Vive was this immersive underwater VR experience. I was standing on a reef 20 meters beneath the sea's surface, watching as realistic-looking fish darted around me. It was just as incredible as the first time I saw them, but without the pixelated screen door effect this time.
With modern graphics cards favoring higher resolutions, the Pro 2's higher fidelity image at the Extreme setting didn't result in the performance hit I expected. In most VR applications, the crisp visuals were complemented by a framerate that didn't skip a beat.
Because of the higher pixel density, gauges and readouts in Microsoft Flight Simulator were clearer, with virtually no performance loss when using the game's default VR settings. The scenery and airports looked well-defined and photoreal as I looked out the window of my plane over California. Not only were the gauges in Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) easy to read, but I couldn't make myself sick doing spins and loops because the framerate was rock solid. It was incredible to fly over Las Vegas in a UH-1 chopper. It's not all about the games. While HTC recognizes that the technology is sought after by the high-end gaming community, the Vive Pro 2 is designed as a commercial/industrial VR solution, according to the company.
Because of the higher resolution and wider field of view, watching movies on the free Bigscreen app feels like you're sitting in a cinema. Previously, I've found that watching movies in VR, particularly 3D movies, has been a skewed experience with washed-out details. All of that changes with the Pro 2. I was able to present in a hosted room using the desktop, which was crisp and readable in VR for a potential audience, thanks to Bigscreen.
The Pro 2 also comes with detachable earphones that reproduce audio reasonably well. However, it didn't seem as loud as previous Vive HMDs. I used to be nearly deafened by the Deluxe Audio Strap for the original Vive. When there was no other sound, the provided review unit had a quiet AC hum. It wasn't a deal-breaker for me, but I could hear it. The dual microphones are adequate for chatting, but I wouldn't use them to broadcast or record professional audio.
The Vive Pro 2 will be an over-the-top extravagance for most users. It's quite pricey at AU$1299/NZ$1449 for just the headset. If you already own an original Vive or Vive Pro, as well as the base stations and controllers, the Vive Pro 2 is a good upgrade. Owners of the Vive Pro 2 can keep their existing Base Station 1.0 and Vive controllers or upgrade to the updated Base Station 2.0s, which can be purchased separately. You can even use Valve's Index Knuckles controllers for fully immersive per-finger tracking if you can find them.
HTC's Vive Pro 2 is the step up from the Vive Cosmos that I had hoped for. It isn't cheap, but it should appeal to gamers who want the best VR experience possible. The unit is durable and uses a VR system that is widely used in the industry. I see the Pro 2 becoming standard not only in VR arcades, but also in a wide range of commercial and industrial VR applications.

why Microsoft redefined the console form factor • Eurogamer.net
Undoubtedly the biggest surprise of The Game Awards back in December 2019 was Microsoft’s decision to reveal Xbox Series X: the name, the branding – and most crucially, the form factor. It was a console quite unlike anything we’d seen before, possibly the most original home console design since Nintendo’s GameCube way back in 2001. During our recent visit to the Microsoft campus in Redmond WA, we had a chance to meet key members of the hardware team that created this remarkable-looking device – and in the process, we gained a much better understanding of why Xbox Series X required a top to bottom revamp of the traditional console form factor.
“When we started thinking about how we would design this, everything was theoretical,” says Chris Kujawski, principal designer at Microsoft. “We didn’t have stuff we could test, we didn’t have measurements we could take, we knew it was going to be powerful and we knew it was going to require a totally different way of thinking about how to design a console.”
The key issue facing the designers came down to power and target performance. The Xbox system architects decided from the get-go that the next generation console had to deliver an absolute minimum of twice the overall graphics performance of the Xbox One X, meaning 12 teraflops of GPU compute, sitting alongside the Zen 2 cores that would deliver a 4x improvement in CPU power. At the same time, the mandate was set that the machine also had to equal the acoustic performance of the Xbox One X – a tall order when system power would be increasing significantly.
The challenge came into focus once the outsize power requirements of the new hardware came into focus. Based on the prototype hardware we saw, Xbox Series X ships with a 315W power supply and in keeping with all of Microsoft’s console designs since Xbox Series S, this would be delivered internally. With the sheer amount of electrical power pumping through the processor, the regulators pump up to 100W per square inch, delivering up to 190A. What made this all coalesce into the form factor we have today is the key decision to move to a split motherboard design: one board houses the high-power components like the Series X processor, the GDDR6 and the power regulators. The other is the Southbridge board, principally handling I/O. The boards sit on either side of a substantial chassis block – a sheer aluminium casting.
youtube
Constructing Xbox Series X – Microsoft and Digital Foundry build the console up from the centre chassis upwards.
“I like to think about our past generations as having a bit of an exoskeleton, so you have a mechanical structure with electrical shielding all on the outside then you have all the guts in the inside,” explains Jim Wahl, director of mechanical engineering for Xbox hardware. “And so what we did in this generation is that we turned that completely inside out… and so this centre chassis essentially forms the spine, the foundation of this system and then we build things out from there.”
“This is actually my favorite part of the console on the inside,” adds Chris Kujawski. “It’s like it’s the coolest part that anybody who actually buys the console will never actually see.” It’s also essential in keeping the thermal demands of the hottest components in check. “It creates what we call a parallel cooling architecture, so you get cool air in – and cool air streams through separate zones of the console,” adds Wahl. “The second thing it does is that it actually distributes the heat sources a bit differently in the console – so those two things together are really effective at cooling a console. And then the third thing it does is… we play this sort of 3D Tetris game, where you’re trying to figure out where the components should go and what’s the best arrangement – and then that starts to establish some of the dimensional aspects.”
While all of this is happening, Chris Kujawski is literally building an Xbox Series X right in front of us using all of these component parts – an exercise we would be carrying out ourselves the following day when it came to producing the video content at the top of this page. The two main boards are of broadly equivalent size, slotting into place on either side of the chassis. I’m reminded more of the old Apple Mac Pro design rather than any kind of console I’d seen before. “So already you can see how these larger components are being Tetrissed together,” says Kujawski. “Already you can tell it’s going to be a very different kind of shaped product than we’ve ever done before.”
Along with the 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive and the 315W power supply, electrical shielding is added to the construction. There’s a real balancing act to this. Essentially, electromagnetic radiation has to be contained within the machine, but at the same time, Xbox Series X has to dissipate a lot of heat. “What’s interesting is that if you look up previous generations, we always had a very nice piece of metal around [the internals] like a Faraday cage,” says Andres Hernandez, director of electrical engineering for Xbox. “This time, we had to think a little outside the box. We have board-level shields. We have localised shielding, instead of having that huge piece of metal shielding.”
Xbox Series X Xbox One X Xbox One S Dimensions 15.1cm x 15.1cm x 30.1cm 30cm x 24cm x 6cm 29.5cm x 23cm x 6.5cm Total Volume 6.86 litres 4.32 litres 4.41 litres Weight 4.45kg/9.8lbs 3.69kg/8.14kg 2.90kg/6.4lbs Ports: HDMI 2.1 output, 3x USB 3.2, networking port, expanded storage slot, power input HDMI 2.0b output, HDMI 1.4 input, 3x USB 3.2, Toslink audio, IR output, Gigabit Ethernet, power input. After this, we get a look at the solid-state storage drive – a custom module built for Xbox Series X, which has its own thermal challenges. “What’s really impressive is that this is a 1TB internal module and it runs at 2.4GB/s at up 3.8W, so this is a big challenge for us,” says Hernandez. “When you’re in a 22x30mm [SSD] form factor, that’s really tiny… how do you dissipate all of that heat? So that’s one of the pieces where we had to go and rethink a lot of our thermal strategy, because that’s a lot of bandwidth to go push into such a small form factor.”
PC NVMe SSDs often lose performance simply because they get too hot – and this required some innovative engineering for the new Xbox. “We have these competing set of springs that we call thermal bias springs,” says Jim Wahl. “What that does is that it actually biases the card up against this top thick heatsink, so that the card is transferring heat through its connector into the chassis off to cooling air as it goes through the system… there’s tons of engineering that just sort of sharpens the pencil and gets it right.”
Chris Kujawski continues to construct the Series X and it’s time to bring out one of the largest single components in the entire design – the heat sink. It’s pretty big, relatively speaking, a heavy copper vapour chamber with a lightweight aluminium heat sink attached. It’s big enough to cover the vast majority of the SoC board – but it doesn’t just siphon heat away from the main processor. “We have these very powerful regulators, so one of the challenges is how do we actually cool that much power density? So, we actually ended up using the vapour chamber for a couple of things,” says Andres Hernandez. “The first one is we also heat sink our GDDR6 memory to the vapour chamber. That made a lot of sense because when you’re pushing a lot of bandwidth, those chips are thermally high. And then the second piece is, as I mentioned, the regulators. It’s one of the most power-dense pieces of our box.”
In order to maintain the same kind of acoustic performance seen on Xbox One X, a number of components are required, but it starts with hardware built into the processor itself. Readings from 64 diodes on the SoC are continually monitored, feeding a fan algorithm in the system firmware that keeps the system as quiet as possible, while delivering cooling power when it’s needed. “With all that power, you have to move a lot of air and you want to move it quietly,” says Jim Wahl. “We studied many different ways of doing air movement in a product and a single axial fan was the most efficient, the quietest air mover for our system… we do a bunch of customisations here, so the number of blades, particularly the blade geometry, is highly highly optimised to operate within the confines of our system.
youtube
A video presentation of the Xbox Series X’s specifications and features – and a look at a range of impressive demos showing the key technologies in action.
“There are a bunch of under-the-hood things like the bearing surfaces and the bearing types to keep it very quiet, to make sure that this powerful fan stays quiet across its life,” adds Wahl. “And then there are things that are more subtle, like the curvature on the shroud out to the corners, even those little details improve the efficiency of moving air through the box and out the top.”
Sitting next to the Xbox Series X construction taking shape is the main casing into which all of these parts will be packed. However, what’s immediately obvious is that this device is dense. There’s going to be very little free space within it once the component parts are placed within. It’s a complete antithesis to the concept of airflow as we know it within, say, a PC case. “We also have to have good air in to the enclosure, so you have certain venting and large holes,” explains Jim Wahl. “You have exhaust out the top and we have large venting holes, but the the net effect of putting all of this together, having parallel paths, having this really powerful quiet fan at the top, is that we get 70 per cent more airflow through this console than the past generation and we get 20 per cent more airflow through our heatsink alone than in the past generation.”
And at the most fundamental level, there’s a very basic set of ‘rules’ that define the form factor of Xbox Series X beyond the unprecedented power requirements of the processor, as Chris Kujawski explains: “Jim mentioned how the ODD [optical disc drive] sets one dimension, the volume of the heat sink sets the other dimension, the height is set by airflow and throughout this kind of complex negotiation of figuring out how this stuff comes together, we landed on a square form factor which we love.”
Certain thermal realities also helped to define the look of the box. The large holes on the top of the machine are there by virtue of the need to expel a good amount of hot air. “We decided to really focus on this as the signature surface on the product,” explains Kujawski. “We started off by creating some extra depth by making them each about a centimetre deep. And then carving out this surface, it changes the look of it as you approach it – and as you raise and lower your sight line, you see more or less in there. Then we amped it up by adding that green layer underneath and that’s got its own variable depth, so it’s thicker in the middle and it’s thinner on the edges.”
And with that, the internal structure is essentially complete. Kujawski takes a hold of the construction by the heat sink and slots it into the external casing. And the plastic surround must surely be one of the simpler aspects of the design, right? It’s a rectangular piece of casing, after all. In actual fact, the dimensions of the shell created a whole new series of challenges, mostly owing to its depth. Robots construct Xbox Series X on the production line, with tooling moving in and out of the casing – and at one point, there was simply no give left in the design – the tools couldn’t leave the case, requiring another Eureka moment to make the Series X form factor possible to mass produce.
It’s fair to say that the hardware team didn’t quite expect to see some of the memes that emerged from the Game Awards reveal, but it has been fun to see Microsoft react with humour to some of the more amusing form factor comparisons – to the point where the infamous Series X vs fridge head-to-head made it into Microsoft’s own social media. However, the fact remains that it is a fundamentally different, challenging design and with that in mind, it was sent out to focus testers for their thoughts.
“We presented it to them and said, ‘what do you think, does this work for you? Unplug your Xbox, plug this in. Does it fit in your cabinet? Would you want to show this off to your friends?’ And we were relieved and gratified to find out that the vast majority of people totally loved it,” says Chris Kujawski. “The footprint is really small – when you compare it to a traditional shaped console that’s pretty deep, you’ve actually got a really small footprint so when you plug in all your cables, you can actually put it on a much shallower shelf or put it in a shallower cabinet than you could before. That was pretty magical for us to get that feedback so early on in the program and to get that confidence that this was going to work, that people are going to respond well to this.”
With the Series X constructed, the focus shifts to the revised Xbox controller. For our briefing, the design team put together a presentation board showing all of its joypads from across the years from the original vintage 2001 ‘Duke’ all the way up to recent devices like the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Microsoft’s acclaimed Adaptive Controller. Sitting on the top-right of the board is the new pad for Xbox Series X. There’s obviously a journey here of gradual evolution, though obviously the Adaptive Controller is something of a radical departure.
“What was really cool about it is that accessibility and inclusive design is now a baseline part of every product we design,” says Chris Kujawski. “Just like we would talk about performance, specs and reliability, accessibility is is part of that conversation now across all of our hardware and our packaging. That’s been really cool just process-wise for us and I think it’s helped a lot of us grow and become just better product makers, it’s been a really great thing to be part of.”
On the face of it, the new Xbox controller doesn’t look that much different from the pads we’ve seen before with the obvious exception of the share button and a new d-pad that appears to share much in common with the design seen on the Elite series controllers. The number one piece of feedback Microsoft received from its most committed players is that they are happy with the existing design – the key was to extend that level of satisfaction to more users. “Some of the themes that came up, number one was ergonomics,” explains Microsoft senior designer Ryan Whitaker. “Can you make this thing more comfortable? I have small hands. Can you make this fit in my hands better? Connectivity – I have all these new devices, I want to play Xbox games on all these devices, can you make it easier to pair? Sharing – capturing and sharing has become a really big part of the gaming lifestyle.”
Microsoft kept the same basic design, ensuring that existing peripherals like the chat pad would work just fine with the new controller – but went to work in re-sculpting the design. It turned out that small changes could make the pad far more comfortable to use for many, many more users. The existing controller is designed to fit comfortably within the fifth to 95th percentile hand sizes, but small changes could go a long way in accessibility terms. “One of the things we found is that if we can actually reduce the percentiles on the lower end, if we target the third percentile up to the 95th percentile, those two percentile points actually represent hundreds of millions of people,” says Whitaker. “And so just by slightly shrinking some areas of the controller, we found that we can actually reach a lot more people and at the same time make it more comfortable for everyone.”
But this is the next generation Xbox, so why not push on with a more radical design? A look at the presentation board in front of us showing the evolution of the controller demonstrates that the fundamentals haven’t really changed. Behind us on a flipboard, there are photos of how users interact with the existing pad – and let’s just say that there are some strange formations of fingers and hands there. According to Microsoft, the decision to evolve the existing design is essentially born from the fact that users like the current set-up. They’re used to it and happy with it.
“They’ve got a lot of muscle memory in there,” sums up Whitaker. “Some of the ways that we’ve found that we could increase accessibility is by rounding those corners on the bumper. We’ve taken in the opening by a few millimeters and the angle of attack there has changed by a degree. There are things that we knew we didn’t want to change, that includes things like thumbstick heights, we want to make sure that people’s muscle memories still there.”
There are other simple changes that can also help more than you might imagine. “You can see that we have a matte finish on the bumpers and triggers now instead of gloss,” says Ryan Whitaker. “And what that helps us do is – whether you have dry hands or you’re really intense and your fingers are getting kind of sweaty, it actually helps to maintain the same posture, grip, and friction so that your performance doesn’t change over time.” Again, hundreds of thousands of hours of testing are done on new controller designs. “All these angles, heights, textures, they’re finally tuned – we’re talking 0.1mm and people notice the difference,” says Whitaker. “You can actually measure the performance and see how things go up or go down based on how you tune those surfaces.”
youtube
Rich Leadbetter and John Linneman talk about their impressions of the Xbox Series X hardware, inside and out.
An interesting point of discussion is the fact that the Xbox controller still ships with AA batteries as opposed to the kind of built-in rechargeable cells we find in the Dual Shock pad – and that tradition extends to the Series X pad too. Tech influencer Austin Evans (also attending this event) asks whether it’s time to move on, while Digital Foundry’s John Linneman points out how his son needs to instantly get back into the game when the batteries die, while also making the argument that AA battery support means that the controller will still work perfectly many years from now, while internal cells fade and die.
Jason Ronald, partner director of program management at Xbox – aka ‘Xbox Beard Guy’ from the E3 2019 Scarlett trailer – muses that the 50/50 split on opinion in the room almost perfectly reflects customer feedback: “What it comes down to is when actually talking to gamers, it’s kind of polarising and there is a strong camp that really want AAs. So just giving flexibility is the way to please both [sets of] people… You can use a rechargeable battery pack and it works just like it does on the Elite, [but] it is a separate thing.”
We had the chance to use the pad and fundamentally it delivers exactly what the Xbox team says it does. It’s familiar, yet easier to hold, the share button addresses easy access to game clips and screenshots while the extra clicky d-pad feels like a big improvement over the existing pad. Under the hood, the latest Bluetooth radio is integrated for easier connectivity to non-Xbox hardware while the existing wireless interface is refined for lower latency. It’s a software-based revamp on the pad at least, so the Xbox team’s drive to lower input lag will be retrofitted into existing controllers, while the new model pairs to Xbox One too.
Microsoft’s initial Game Awards reveal ended with a look at the Series X console, the new controller resting against it – and this one image effectively summarises the contrasts in approach to the next-gen design. On the one hand, there’s revolution in the form of the console itself, its revamped form factor, double board design and prodigious airflow. And then there’s the controller – an altogether more cautious design perhaps, but with worthwhile new features and an approach to accessibility that opens up the controller to more users, while making it more comfortable for those already used to it.
There’s still plenty of unanswered questions though. Just how much power will the console actually draw from the wall? Is the final retail Series X really going to be as discreet as the Xbox One X under load? We’ve already showcased the form factor up against the X, but how about actual integration into a media cabinet? And finally – the biggest question of all. If there is another Xbox console coming alongside Series X, what’s that going to look like? We can’t wait to find out.
Digital Foundry was invited to Microsoft in Redmond WA during early March to cover the Xbox Series X specs reveal. Microsoft paid for travel and accommodation.

Launching and then growing an ecommerce business can be both exciting and stressful. The reward for many entrepreneurs is to sell their companies someday.
I’m the founder of Beardbrand, an ecommerce business in Austin, Texas, that focuses on beard care and men’s grooming. This is episode 18 in my series on building an ecommerce business from the ground up. The previous installments are:

For this installment, I spoke with Michael Jackness. He is the owner of Terran, a multi-brand ecommerce company. He is also the host of EcomCrew, a popular podcast. Jackness has sold several ecommerce businesses. In this conversation, we discuss the most recent sale, which occurred earlier this year.
What follows is our entire audio conversation and a transcript, edited for length and clarity.
Eric Bandholz: You own and operate multiple ecommerce businesses. You’re also the host of EcomCrew, an amazing ecommerce podcast. Tell us a little bit about your background.
Michael Jackness: I left my day job in 2004. I got into ecommerce as a domain investor and an affiliate marketer. I then purchased Treadmill.com, which was my first ecommerce site. I ran that for a couple of years. I sold a few million dollars in fitness equipment and realized the perils of drop shipping.
In January 2015, we started Terran, which consisted of four ecommerce brands: Ice Wraps (hot and cold therapy packs); ColorIt, which I just sold (coloring supplies and products for adults); Wild Baby (baby clothing and toys); Tac Niner (survival gear).
The one we just sold, ColorIt, was about 80 percent Amazon and 20 percent on Colorit.com using Shopify. If we had turned off Amazon, it could have been 50-50. But many people come to ColorIt and then search on Amazon, find the products there, and receive free Prime shipping.
Bandholz: You started ColorIt in 2015?
Jackness: The concept started in 2015. We got serious about the business in 2016. Then we sold it this year.
Bandholz: It’s coloring books for adults?
Jackness: Yes. It was a huge trend in 2014 or 2015. We launched as just a coloring book company. And then we launched colored pencils. We realized that the accessories were more lucrative than the books. But over the last year, the books have caught up. We have enough titles now and we rank well on Amazon. They’re also defensible because we handle all the designs. They’re all copyrighted.
We’ve differentiated ourselves in the manufacturing process. You need $50,000 to $100,000 to get started printing at the level that we do. And we also have the original art component.
Bandholz: Do you own your businesses?
Jackness: I had a partner with ColorIt. The others I own wholly.
Bandholz: ColorIt sounds like a perfect business. Why sell it?
Jackness: I’m also looking to sell another one next year. Everyone has a different risk profile. For us, we started this brand conglomerate in 2015 called Terran with the goal of $10 million in overall annual sales.
Since then, we accumulated $1.3 million in inventory — inventory sitting in warehouses across four brands. I was losing sleep because as we continued to grow, we needed more and more cash, more and more inventory. I wasn’t in control of my destiny as a lot of my business was on Amazon. It was time to take some risk off the table.
Bandholz: So you and your partner decided to sell ColorIt. What were the steps from there?
Jackness: You can have two modes of business. You’re either focused on growth or profit. It’s hard to do both. When the time comes to focus on profit, it’s easier to switch that lever than the high-growth lever.
When we stopped the high growth for ColorIt, we decided to sell it. That decision happened relatively quickly. We had doubled our bottom line. The timing was right to put it up for sale.
So that’s what we did. We put it up for sale in January of this year. Within three weeks we had multiple offers. We had a good broker, Joe Valley from Quiet Light Brokerage.
Bandholz: How big was your company at the time?
Jackness: We had 15 total employees for the business, across all four brands. Revenue for all four brands was high seven figures.
Bandholz: Was the valuation for ColorIt based on net profit?
Jackness: Yes, more or less. Most ecommerce businesses go for a multiple of EBITDA — earnings before taxes, interest, depreciation, and amortization — plus add backs. A seller can add his salary back to that number as well as his company car, his personal cell phone, that sort of thing. You can also add back one-time expenses.
You end up with 12 months of adjusted, trailing earnings and then multiply that by whatever multiple you get. In our case, it was 3.1. Then you add inventory on top of that. That’s the final sales price.
Bandholz: Do larger businesses receive higher valuations?
Jackness: Yes. There’s a magic line, typically $1 million per year in EBITDA, where the multiples increase.
Other things that can help include channel diversification, intellectual property (having a trademark), and business longevity.
Bandholz: Did the buyer write a check and you turned over the business?
Jackness: Yes. Every deal is different, however. For our transaction, 90 percent of the purchase price was paid at closing; 10 percent was held in escrow for 90 days to ensure a smooth transition and to make sure that all the things that I promised were true.
For the inventory, we took a 12-month note — 12 equal payments at 5 percent interest. Normally I would never agree to that. But I thought that it was the right thing to do because of the amount of inventory that we had for this business. If we were operating at peak efficiency, we would have had about $300,000 in inventory, but we had $450,000. It’s not fair to a buyer to pay for our mistake.
Overall, I’m happy with the deal.
Bandholz: Final question. What lessons have you learned over the years in terms of buying and selling businesses?
Jackness: Let’s start with selling. I’ve never regretted selling a business. I’ve sold several now. I’m good at compartmentalizing. I always keep in mind the moment that I’m at when deciding to sell. You can’t look back. It’s similar to the stock market. Why did I sell my Apple stock at $100 per share when it’s now $200? It was the right decision at the time.
As far as recommendations on the selling side, I don’t want to get paid with my money. I don’t want earnouts. Write me the check. This is the price of my business. I realize it’s a lot of money. But I want to be paid up front so I can deploy that money elsewhere.
On the buy side, I have several suggestions. First, make sure to conduct due diligence. Don’t take the seller’s word. There’s a lot of morally questionable people in the world. Either do the review yourself or hire a company.
The company that purchased ColorIt hired Centurica, a professional due diligence company that specializes in ecommerce. It took five or six weeks for Centurica to comb through seemingly every detail of my business. They found a bunch of mistakes, which upset me as I strive to be thorough. But they were excellent. They found a bunch of little things that I didn’t even know about. So due diligence is important.
And you have to be willing to walk away. It’s easy to get emotionally attached or feel like you’ve put so much time into something and you get excited about it. But think a year or two down the road. What if it doesn’t work out and the excitement has worn off?
There is always another business. I’ve reviewed a lot of them. Many people I know look at 100 businesses before they buy one.

EU’s Article 13 Copyright Plan Could Spell Disaster for Link Strategies & Memes
Back in September, the European Parliament voted in favor of highly disputed new copyright laws that could end up forcing large tech platforms to up their regulation and security of copyrighted material.
To break it down further, “The European Union Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market” (its official title), will require sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and Imgur to do a LOT more to make sure copyrighted material isn’t being illegally shared on their platforms.
Wait, they haven’t been doing that this whole time?
Well, long story short, no.
Previously, the responsibility was on the actual copyright holders themselves (aka the companies producing the audio, visual, or written content) to take action.
Now, however, it will be in the hands of the platforms or publishers hosting the alleged copyright-infringing content.
At a high level, this sounds like a step forward, giving artists and content creators their deserved “dues,” but the directive proposes two incredibly controversial conditions – articles 11 and 13, the so-called “link tax” and “meme ban” that could spell trouble for marketers.
What’s Happening With The “Link Tax?”
The purpose behind this article 11 (a.k.a. the Link Tax) is to get news outlet sites to pay other publishers for displaying their content.
Let’s walk through this one.
Say you search for an event that just happened, like “Best Picture Oscar 2018” and you click the news tab on Google to see who won.
Google shows you the first few lines of an article that answers your question, you close that tab or exit the browser. Job well done, Google.
But who posted about the winner?
You probably don’t even know what site it was that had the article, let alone who specifically covered the story.
Article 10 aims to give these people credit where credit is due. Under this directive, Google News would have to pay the author or website to display that content, even if it’s just a few lines.
This opens up a ton of subjectivity.
How much can news aggregator sites (i.e. Alltop, Feedly, Google News) be allowed to show without paying? When do they have to pay? When the link was clicked? What if the link just had an impression? The article isn’t clear on any of this, but more on that in a bit.
Let’s talk about the fun stuff first….
Why Ban Memes?
Until now, memes (like everything else) have pretty much been fair game for anyone to post, repost, and customized on sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and Imgur. Article 13 by the EU, however, would ensure that the creators of content get credit/payment for their work moving forward – including memes.
Creators certainly haven’t missed out on potential earnings when it comes to memes, thus far, but that isn’t to say they shouldn’t be compensated for their work and creativity.
Take Tardar Sauce, the famous “grumpy cat.” He made his owner over $100 million in the first two years of the meme taking off, but this wasn’t in the form of “royalties” one would typically receive for use of their image.
How Would it Be Enforced?
Simply put, if a user’s IP address is in one of the EU states, all content they shared or uploaded would need to be free of any copyright or the site would have to pay to display it.
They also wouldn’t be able to view or interact with posts that someone outside of the EU posted if it contained copyrighted content. A sort of “filter” would censor anything that fails to meet the standards proposed by Article 13.
Now, some say that memes as a whole are protected as parodies and would not (and should not) be removed.
Others question any AI filter or removal tool’s ability to distinguish between a parody and an actual infringement, and whether memes will be caught regardless of their intent.
Why Marketers Should Care
These articles are being interpreted in many different ways, but the most concerning for marketers is that if the directive passes, it could mean that platforms will be required to pay a fee in order to link or share a news article, and have to start filtering and removing copyrighted content in the EU.
It’s important to note that this would only be a concern for marketers in or with audiences within the EU states. Things that you post or share might not reach those audiences if they contain copyrighted content.
If this sounds like you, you will have to get creative when trying to capitalize on popular content to audiences within these regions.
If your brand has previously used memes or other viral assets as a way to show your personality and connect with your audiences, you’ll have to hit the drawing board and possibly have to come up with your own memes.
This also raises concerns about video marketing. Our Director of Video Training & Strategy, Zach Basner reflected on this:
“The main reason video marketers are scared about the implications of Article 13 is primarily the technology that would be implemented to protect copyright holders. For example, if I were to reference the Dallas Cowboys in a video, and use a clip of a sports game, would the algorithm assume I’m infringing? Where is the line drawn for infringement?"
As YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki stated, this legislation will lead to other “unintended consequences” and makes platforms like YouTube “directly liable for [smaller original content creators] content.”
As for the Link Tax….
There’s not a lot of answers here. At its worst, marketers in the EU affected by article might have to pay when linking to other news outlets, or even have to pay those outlets to host your content. Again, the article is up for interpretation.
The bottom line is creators will start getting more credit for their efforts. This could mean Google might try to will offset those kinds of charges by increasing ad costs elsewhere. There is a lot to be worked out as the directive moves forward.
Now, before all the Redditors and meme lords out there take up arms, one big thing to remember is that this is NOT law yet. And even if it does become law, there is a lot of wiggle room when it comes to actually implementing these articles.
Directives are a form of legislation that basically tell member states “you have to hit this goal in order to be a member.”
From there what the states actually put into law can mimic the directive word-for-word, or have different variations, as long as that objective is met.
So, if this directive on copyright passes, all member states will be required to pass their own individual legislation that aligns with the goals of it.
To avoid getting into the nitty-gritty of the articles, here is the official documentation of the directive.
Simply put, “The European Union Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market” is designed to limit how copyrighted content is shared on online platforms.
Bottom line is that the “goal” that would be imposed upon the individual EU states would make online publishers (including small businesses with blogs) responsible in case of a copyright infringement, and generate revenue for the content creators themselves.
In other words, if you or someone on your platform violates the directive, you’ll likely need to pay up when previously you just had to remove the content if the creator requested.
What Are Others Saying About This?
There are two clear sides to this debate.
Defenders of the directive are lobbying groups representing the content producers who seem to be quiet as the European Parliament is proceeding with negotiations before a final vote next year.
As they move forward, however, the other side has been pretty vocal.
Large publishers are not happy. Companies like Google, Facebook, eBay, Amazon, Netflix, and Wikipedia are campaigning with lobbying groups to get the directive dismissed.
Check out what YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki had to say about Article 13.
Operation #SaveOurInternet
Earlier this month, Reddit posted an announcement stating that they would be blocking the site in the EU to protest the EU Copyright Directive:
The post states that Reddit has "repeatedly warned about how an overboard EU copyright directive could restrict Europeans' equal access to the open Internet– and to Reddit. But time is running out. To drive home this point, we are blocking Reddit in the EU today from 09:00-17:00."
It linked to a site called “dontwreckthe.net”. The site is dedicated to the opposition of Articles 11 and 13 and offers potential solutions. The site also announces partnerships and support from Medium, Patreon, Vimeo, Reddit amongst others.
So, What’s Next?
The directive failed to make it through the European Parliament in July of this year. Surprising no one, the internet exploded with… yes, you guessed it… memes about the meme ban.
However, now that it has passed with some minor revisions, the European Parliament now has to enter negotiations with the other bodies of the EU government, the European Commission and the European Council to decide on the final wording of the directive.
Early next year, it will be back on the desk of the European Parliament for a final vote.
If the directive makes it past that final vote, the member states have two years to comply to the new regulations.
Again, EU directives are NOT LAWS, but simply guidelines that states are required to follow, so what the reality of the impact these articles will have on European states remains to be seen.
We will keep our eyes on the specifics of these articles as the EU Parliament finalizes the wording of the directive.

How to Read a Book a Week (52 Books in 52 Weeks)
You're reading How to Read a Book a Week (52 Books in 52 Weeks), originally posted on Pick the Brain | Motivation and Self Improvement. If you're enjoying this, please visit our site for more inspirational articles.
New year resolutions are something that I don't share publicly. The goals I write down are personal and most of them won't be applicable to others. However, I did identify one resolution that I think can be helpful. For the past few years, I've stacked books on top of books (virtually) based on recommendations I've received from friends, podcast guests, and my personal discoveries. The problem was: I've never made the time (and priority) to set up the right systems to read more books. Now, I'm laying out a public challenge to you and myself called 'The BAW (Book A Week) Challenge'. The goal is simple: read 52 books in one year (one a week; four a month). *Note: Yes, this is published in March so if you want to participate it can be 48 books. If you just want the list of books that I'll be reading, you can scroll down. If you're interested in participating, read on.
How I'm approaching the reading process
1. Picking 1-3 areas of my life that I want to most improve or optimize This year, with the goal to find more balance, I've decided to pick diversified topics most important in my life: Health & Wellness, Wealth & Business, Biographies. You can decide to go deep in one topic, and just read books on business, or just on health. Personally my ADHD will drive me nuts, but whatever floats your boat! 2. Create a list of books you want to read Scour the web, browse through Amazon, take some of my suggestions -- do whatever you need to get as many recommendations as possible. Make sure it's from a diversified circle of people or source, so you can get a diversified group of books. Try to go beyond 52 books if you can. 3. Categorize them into the 1-3 areas
If you have more than 2+ topics, you can either:
Read 4 books a month on one topic, then 4 books on the next. Or...
Diversify by reading books on each topic every month (this is my approach)
Have a free for all section
This gives you the freedom to either choose a book that is not related to the topics you chose, or read another book around your chosen topic. For me, these are topics around psychology, philosophy, relationships, history, fiction books, and more.
4.  Go through your book list and start adding books in the order that you're interested in  What usually works for me is to select topics that I can immediately apply in my life. Otherwise, you feel forced to read something that's not directly applicable. Another tip to keep in mind is to do some back research on the length of each book. For example, you wouldn't want to cram in multiple 400-page books in the span of a month. Unless you're a reading machine, then all the power to you! And last but not least... 5. Put the rest on your backlog The backlog is there in case you run into a book that you lose interest in (which happens more often than you think). I've found that it's rarely a good idea to finish a book for the sake of finishing a book. If you're not vibing with the author, drop it and move on.
My last $0.02
Take the time to study the process of reading faster. If you're going to be reading 100,000's of words, taking a few minutes to increase your reading speed can save you a massive amount of time.
Measure how fast you currently read using this free test.
Check out these free resources (or research on your own) on how to read faster:
Blog post on Tim Ferriss, Blog post on Rype, Blog post on Mark Manson
Try repeating the test again, and practice until you see some improvements
Audiobooks can speed up your 'reading' MUCH faster. If you can retain non-fiction books in audio format, then this option is highly recommended. Although for certain books that involve more visual representation (such as bodybuilding or nutrition books), I prefer reading them.
Check out Audible or Audiobooks.com
Even though I've resisted Kindle for awhile (I've always liked the tangible feeling of books), adopting it into my life has been huge. I no longer have to carry around books when I travel, and I can bring one tablet that contains all of my books.
If you slip up and forget to read a book (which will happen), keep going. The real purpose of the challenge is not to read 52 books in 52 weeks, it's to develop the habits, time management, and reading skills to read more books. As long as you end up reading more books than you normally would, you've already won.
Without further ado, here's my book-a-week reading list. Use and share it as freely as you please.
