Ninja lanternshark!

It can faintly glow blue, blending into the small amount of light available at the depths they live in! This makes them unnoticeable to their prey, shrimp and small fish. Their scientific name, Etmopterus benchleyi, has a reference to Peter Benchley, who wrote the novel Jaws!

WEIRD SHARKS THAT'S WHAT IT'S TIME FOR

(IDs are in the image descriptions)

Pocket Shark

Pocket sharks are named for two small pocket glands appearing behind their pectoral fins. These glands are theorized to be luminous. Pocket sharks look like tiny, tiny sperm whales.

Angular Roughshark

Also called the pig-faced shark or the pig fish, angular roughsharks grow to be about 3 feet 4 in long on average. I personally think they're more bat-faced.

Goblin Shark

Found in the deep sea, goblin sharks are known for being able to extend their jaws like a grabber tool made of teeth. Wikipedia says that these sharks' "flabby bodies" suggest that they are sluggish in nature.

Cookiecutter Shark

The cookiecutter shark only grows to about 20 inches in length, but that doesn't stop it from biting into orcas, great whites, or humans. It suctions onto its meal with its lips and then goes to town. It removes perfect circles of flesh, hence its name.

Wobeggong Shark

Wobeggong refers to twelve species of carpet shark, so-named for their resemblance to a shag rug. They dwell on the bottom of the sea floor and wait for smaller fish to swim nearby.

Swell Shark

Swell sharks like to hide in crevices of algae-covered rocks, waiting for prey to swim by. They are so named not because they're really swell (though they are) but because as a defense mechanism, they can swell up to double their size by swallowing sea water.

Greenland Shark

The Greenland shark has high concentrations of urea in its body. It is theorized to have a lifespan of 250 to 500 years, and it can grow up to 23 feet long. Greenland sharks have been found with moose and reindeer in their stomachs. Because of the shark's toxic levels of urea, its flesh must be fermented or otherwise treated before consumption.

Viper Dogfish

Like the goblin shark, the viper dogfish's jaws can protude from the rest of its head, though its coloring means the viper dogfish looks significantly more Xenomorphish when doing so. This small shark is a member of the lanternshark family, and its underside glows.

Pointy-Nosed Blue Chimaera

Also know as the abyssal ghostshark, this deep sea shark has a venomous spine on its dorsal fin used for defense.

Genie's Dogfish Shark

Genie's dogfish shark is a small species found in the gulf of Mexico and the west Atlantic Ocean. It has real life anime eyes.

Ninja Lanternshark

The ninja lanternshark is a small bioluminescent shark. It is all black except for white markings around its eyes and mouth. It reaches about a foot and a half in length.

Frilled Shark

The frilled shark is sometimes called a living fossil, as it is basically unchanged in the past 80 million years. They are named for their teeth, which each have three points.

Epaulette Shark

Epaulette sharks are named for the large spots behind their pectoral fins. These sharks frequently visit tidal pools and have adapted to long periods of oxygen deprivation by shutting down non-essential neural functions. Epaulette sharks often "walk" with their fins on the sea floor rather than swim.

Horn Shark

Similar to the epaulette sharks, horn sharks like to walk on the sea floor with their fins. However, these sharks have sharp spines to deter predators.

This Ridiculousness

A prehistoric shark, helicoprion lived 20 million years ago and was apparently part buzzsaw. A fossil unearthed in Idaho in 2014 showed that these sharks had no teeth in their upper jaw, and a whorl of teeth in their lower jaw. It's a shame Junji Ito wasn't introduced to this shark during the writing of Uzumaki.

tbh i dont know all that much about sharks, but just doing a quick search around basking sharks and the tasseled wobbegong are pretty cool

also the ninja lanternshark on account of that's a fucking baller ass name and also they're mildly bioluminescent which is always cool

MerMay Compilation #1 - 2022

Nobody but a handful of friends knows the characters these guys are based on, much less these guys, and that’s okay. The Cinnamon Roll Trio and Sinnamon Roll Trio (mini-game: figure out which are which!) are what I could muster for what will be an annual cumulative MerMay Mini Project. Levels of detail/completion vary, I’m sorry. @v@;

This year: colored-in scribbles. Next year: the same drawings, but cleaned up! After that, who knows?! But I’ll do lore blurbs to go with each set! Having said that, six more ‘paragraphs’ (just transcripts of the text on those 6 sheet images) under the cut! XD

Mer!Kaiza

~Based on an Angular Roughshark (for that bumpy abrasive personality skin) ~ Size: Smol ~ That heavily scarred arm and missing eye gets a lot of unwanted attention from other predators. ~ Quite self-conscious about it. ~ Lounges on rocks a lot (out of water, when he can) ~ Surprisingly does have friends (one of which is a ninja lanternshark) ~ Does not respond well to flirting/attempts to befriend; slow to warm up ~ Low-key nosy, but won't admit it ~ Gets a lot of gossip from Ninja Lanternshark friend

Mer!Treavor

~ Based on a Ninja Lanternshark (because... ninjas are cool, and I've attributed some ninja tools/traits to his human character. CX) ~ That said, he's a horrible gossip and can't resist some good tea. To his credit, he'll often use it for good. ~ Quite the flirt (just for fun). ~ His teeth tend to scare a good number of people anyway (his greatest regret: no lips = no kissy faces). ~ Not Kaiza or Crowe, though. (surprisingly, they quickly climbed his trust ladder and vice versa) ~ Quick to warm up to people, but also quick to cool off if you break his trust. ~ More a fighter than his friends, and so often is protecting them (with some cloak and dagger tactics he favors).

Mer!Crowe

~ Based on a Hooded Carpetshark (because it's a cutie, and so is Crowe; sorry, I forgot the main reason...) ~ Loves to accessorize ~ Has a fascination with both aquatic plant life and the world of the land-dwellers, and so collects, like Treavor. ~ It's how they became friends. ~ Spends a lot of time on the seafloor, finding research specimens. ~ Befriended Treavor and shortly thereafter, Kaiza, finding their unique skills 'interesting'. ~ Specifically, she proposed they forma functional research team, as her work sometimes was dangerous. ~ She dreams of creating a great invention.

Mer!Ailbe

~ Based on a Frilled Shark (because frilly, but also for other evolving reasons, I promise) ~ Glows in the dark, sometimes. ~ Specifically when invoking magic, a skill retained only by living fossils, the likes of him. Awkwardly, puts the likes of him in high demand. ~ Also gives him a dark reputation. ~ At least he knows the friends he has are (most likely) not fake. ~ Keeps his mouth shut because his teeth are objectively horrifying, even on mer-shark standards. ~ His frills and natural/magical glow tend to give away his emotion/energy, despite his reserved eyes and locked jaw. ~ His favourite snack is dried kelp. (what a waste of his teeth)

Mer!Idony

~ Based on a Whale Shark (because tall joke, haha; no, seriously, that's all...) ~ Does pretty rough work ~ And thusly is pretty roughed up, doing the work no one wants to, like treasure-hunting in bad neighborhoods. ~ They're tough enough though. ~ Has sass for days; this god among sharks fears no one. ~ Has many acquaintances, but few they would refer to as friends (out loud; they have a reputation to uphold). ~ Fighter, through and through and proud of it, by most accounts, sporting decorative burns like war paint. ~ Secretly soft, but that's none of your business.

Mer!Pallas

~ Based on a Sawback Angelshark (because I wanted an Angelshark that was found in the Mediterranean) ~ Absolute Theater Kid ~ Adores the stars and so created unique scar tattoos of a symmetrical fictional constellation he attributes to himself. ~ Will be friends with anyone ~ Especially anyone with patience for his infodumps on astronomy and astrology both. His passion for the stars does not discriminate, and he has a friend in Ailbe, for sure ~ Together, they form the complete member base of the Celestial Studies Club, but don't fret, they're still accepting applications ~ His dream: to play among the stars

Ninja lanternshark!

These sharks have photophores — tiny bioluminescent organs appearing as dots — which are thought to act as lures or aid them in camouflaging themselves among the tiny bit of light visible in the deep sea, hiding them from predators and prey alike. However, peculiarly the photophores of the ninja lanternshark seem to be focused on the head instead of the belly, like with other lanternsharks!

I'm going as a representative to my regional UMC legislative conference next month, and I'd love to go with a couple of your pins! Do you have a time frame in mind for the Kickstarter and manufacturing process?

We will probably be launching the Kickstarter shortly, and they run for 30-45 days -- we might run this one a little bit longer because we know that sometimes it can take a bit of time for groups of people like churches to get things rolling for group purchases. After that, it’s looking like it’ll take us 3 months or so after the Kickstarter closes for fulfillment. (We have to wait for the money to land to set up BackerKit, which takes a month to settle, and then get everyone’s surveys back so we know what to order, then order, and fulfill, and we’re a 2 person operation with occasional help from our kid.)

If you’re looking for a one-off more immediately, I can put the design on one of our pewter pins for you! :)
