Kks: He needs to be seen by a medic soon. Gai: He's not in lethal condition. You're in no shape to- Kks: IT'S MY CALL, GAI. SO JUST DROP IT! Gai: Do you not trust me to protect Tenzou? Kks: Of course I do Gai: Listen to me, Tenzou's ok, Kakashi. I'm safe. You're safe. No one's going to die on your watch. It was a close call. But /you/ sacrificed yourself to get us out of there. You've gone above and beyond, please trust me to get all of us home
Gai: Easy, I've got you! [yamato chuckles as the tortoise crunches on a leaf] Pakkun: Oh! yo, Tenzou Gai: Change of plans Yamato: Senpai?

Cannon
Gai stares down at the ground in front of him, speechless as he watches a small Tortoise stretch out its neck and tilt its head back so it could look up at him.
When he’d decided to practice summoning that morning he’d never thought it would work. All of that work with Kakashi teaching him just what to do had finally paid off, but his rival wasn’t by his side to see his success for himself.
Yet Gai didn’t feel compelled to run off to find his rival for once.
No, today he just stood there staring. His mouth slightly agap and his heart pounding in his chest.
“You,” the tortoise called up to him. “Who summoned me?”
Gai blinked. “Ummm, me?”
“Yes you,” the tortoise huffed. “Your the one i’m asking. Where is my summoner?”
“No, sorry,” Taking a deep breath, Gai counted to five. Just as Choza-sensei had taught him to do whenever he got too excited. When he reached five he continued. “It’s me. I summoned you.”
“You?” The tortoise scuffed. “You’re what, four?”
“Seven,” he corrected it with a huff. “And that’s not even that impressive. My rival could summon his hounds when he was five.”
The tortoise simply stood there staring at him.
“He’s the one who taught me. I’ve been working really hard for three weeks now, and i thought if i tried it out on my own I might get a better feel for it. I didn’t expect-“
Taking a few slow steps towards him, the Tortoise reached out a foot and gently placed it on Gai’s knee.
“You summoned me,” it repeated. “At the age of seven.”
Gai nodded his head.
“Well, if that’s true it’s rather amazing,” he swelled with pride hearing that. Someone, anyone calling him amazing. The boy who everyone thought would amount to nothing, amazing.
He couldn’t believe it.
“I summoned you,” he grinned down at the tortoise. “My name is Maito Gai, and I summoned you.”
“My name is Ningame,” the tortoise replied. “And yes, you did.”

i've gotten a few asks about the kakashi turts dynamic, and i can confirm all of the above. he gets along with them well, although they have been banned from his garden at some point
