Another reason why we should get to have Percy and Nico working their shit out so that they can actually work together to deal with immortals: it would in fact be extremely funny. A god has to deal with these two and ends up in a really awkward situation, because Percy really sucks to deal with but Nico is simply a delight and must be protected. They really want to kill Percy! But they can't, because poor darling Nico would be so upset by that. And Nico would find out, because he's the son of Hades and so could just go and ask Percy (and also I mean someone's gonna see it and no one can resist Nico so he's gonna find out even if he doesn't go chat with Percy's ghost). The desire to smite the shit out of Percy vs the desire to not do anything that would make Nico sad: fight! Some real "unstoppable force meets immovable object" stuff going on here. I'm imagining a similar energy to Ares not fighting Percy in Titan's Curse because Aphrodite's there but he's even more annoyed about it. ...Actually just in general this is quite possibly at its funniest if it is in fact Ares they're dealing with. Can you imagine Ares realizing he can't beat Percy to a pulp because his favourite cousin would be sad about it, it'd be hilarious.

something i loved about nico in tsats is that…he kind of reminded me of the way he was in ttc. before all the trauma and loss and torment. he was cringey and expressive. he made dumb jokes and failed to read the room. he was calling gods Supercool and being extra and annoying. we haven’t seen him act like this since his introduction and i cant help feeling like this is his true self that was suppressed and beaten down over the course of the series with every devastating hit he took. he became withdrawn and mistrustful and angry to protect himself, and seeing his goofy, expressive side finally re-emerge is so thrilling.

he’s still a grumpy little ball of darkness, but he finally has his colors back too ❤️

Quietly sobbing at work while thinking of 15 year old Nico being Dionysus's favorite because his trauma has left him half mad. How Nico is afraid of the dark because he's had to navigate it alone and his brain gets really bad in it. How he calls Will "Night Light" because, even though it's a silly joke, Will does gently comfort him in the dark. Nico who tries so hard to be good and do the right thing, but doesn't believe he is good. Nico who has been resilient and reliable despite everything.

Look, Leo gets what it's like to lose family. He's still healing from the guilt of accidentally killing his mom, and he was kicked out by his remaining family after her death. He might not know your exact situation, but he understands.

Leo probably just assumes that most people cope with their trauma and sadness with humor (Percy, Leo, etc.) so he makes a few jokes to cheer you up when you're down. Not that they help much.

He tries, though. He really does. The poor boy just doesn't understand people like he does machines. It's not like he can fix your problems like he can Festus, he can just support you and be your rock.

And so, he is.

It takes him a while to find out about Bianca. One day, Percy and Annabeth are talking about Nico, and he just so happens to hear that you have another sibling. One he'd never met before.

His first instinct was to ask you about it, not knowing that she was dead.

"Hey babe, why didn't you tell me you had a sister? Is she as hot as you, or is she spooky like Nico?"

Then when he sees the tears welling up in your eyes, he instantly knows something's wrong.

He immediately shuts up, pulling you into a hug and letting you cry until you've calmed down enough to talk about it.

He asks if you wanna talk about it. If you say yes, he listens the entire time. He doesn't make a single joke. But if you say no, he gets that. He knows that you're probably still processing whatever it is that happened.

But gods, is he worried. He goes to anyone he thinks was there when you, Nico, and Bianca showed up at camp, trying to just figure it out so he can help you.

Luckily, he doesn't need to look long. Annabeth and Percy are always there at camp.

When he learns about it, he definitely feels bad for saying that without looking into it, first. You're a di Angelo, for Hades' sake, of course, you're bound to have some things hidden.

The next time he sees you, he wraps his arms around you, gives your forehead a kiss (if he's tall enough, I mean. If he's not, he kisses your neck.), and tells you it's not your fault. That there was nothing you could do.

At first, you're confused. Until it just hits you like a big yellow school bus.

He knows.

And he's staying by your side every step of the way until you've healed from it.

specific thoughts on TSATS:

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

first of all i LOVE how will’s character was written in this. i love how will says things that are kind of closed minded and in nico’s mind, they’re hurtful, but then in will’s pov they seem more reasonable and make sense. it shows their difference in perspective sooo well. and he has so much more depth!! i love how he’s portrayed as having darkness of his own and having his own insecurities. AND HOW HE’S AFRAID OF NICO LEAVING HIM?? that adds SO much for him bc a lot of the time the fandom just sees like nico as scared and emo and sad and insecure and will is happy and confident and WILL bring the one that’s scared of doing something wrong and being left is so ahdjskjdkslgjek

they cry SO MUCH in this book, which isn’t a bad thing at all i kind of love it. also i would be sobbing if i was in tartarus too. i feel like rick always has little themes that he likes to repeat in his books, like people suddenly passing out after saying something, making jokes ina. horrible situation, & etc, and this is definitely another little theme of his (or maybe mark’s who knows!!)

this book definitely is a lot darker than any of rick’s previous books, but i feel like him and mark kind of compensate for it by dropping some of the darker scenes super fast. for example, that scene where will realized that tartarus is alive and like has a breakdown (I FUCKING LOVE THAT SCENE ALSO) is kind of quickly brushed past, and like will kinda just gets over it. i get that the book can’t be too dark tho

correct me if i’m wrong but is this the first pjoverse book that’s had a curse word?? or first rick riordan book period?? i saw nico say the word damn and my jaw DROPPED

i know that the scene where nico sees bianca and maria again is a little like inaccurate and fan pleasing but god am i pleased. like who cares that bianca said she was in elysium after it said in a previous book that she was reborn, it was rlly cute!!! i’m here for it idc

i was ABSOLUTELY FLABBERGASTED when will gave nyx and friends the gay fever. i bet all the plague will truthers are laughing in my face but i DID NOT expect that. i kinda fucking loved it tho he just pulled that out of his ass

there’s some scene in the final showdown where they (they being the authors) like mess up bianca and maria’s names and nico called bianca his mom and i was like huh !!

them kissing and then having to stop because bob is crying so loud is hilarious idc

ALSO bob the cat just like RIPPING that one guy’s throat out and nico trying to stop him and just being horrified was also hilarious

my heart leapt out of my chest when they were walking over the pit of chaos and will was like “she’s telling me to jump” i was like speeding through at that point and that just came out of nowhere and i was like jesus!! that whole scene of them crossing was so good eee also when will had that thing?? that happened to him when he saw the mansion was so creepy and distressing and

i will definitely be diving into will’s trauma and issues once it’s tomorrow and my brain isn’t fried!! i’ve read too many words today

overall i LOVED the book but idk if everyone feels the same bc blocking all the critics all day has been a full time job,, but that book made my little neurodivergent brain buzz so hard

i finished TSATS a couple hours ago and i have a lot to say on some of the shit it’s been getting (keep in mind, i truly did not care abt solangelo before this novel… so this isn’t even coming from a solangelo stan)

TSATS SPOILERS

on nico’s characterization:

- before reading TSATS, i was the FIRST person to complain abt fanon nico. i’ve always HATED when ppl make him dark humor-y and proud and stuff bcz he literally grew up a catholic in 1930s. in the HoO and lowkey ToA era, his ass was NOT frequently making gay jokes and “lol i’m so dead inside” jokes

- i like how in ToA we get to see him be slightly less brooding than in HoO, bcz it shows us that he’s evolving as a person (kinda like real three dimensional human beings tend to do)

- in TSATS, with him now being in a healthy relationship and a safe environment, i think it’s fair to assume he’s changed. i would say the change was fast… but he’s a teenager, and coming from another teenager… im a completely different person than i was 3 months ago so honestly i can 100% believe it

- the one nico characterization thing i didn’t love was his talk w/ piper (and the lil nas x thing but i like to pretend that didn’t happen) … it was pushing it. but i’ll allow it bcz i imagine it could be beneficial to some kids… just wish that same message could’ve been conveyed through will or something?

on will’s characterization:

- i don’t think it’s fair to say he was just “dumbed down” or being an asshole… he was in tartarus. and he spends 90% of the book being injured or severely exhausted.

on them being cringe:

they’re teenagers and it’s a middle grade book. if ur gonna tell me u wouldn’t have said that kinda shit in ur first or second relationship as a teenager… ur fuckin lyin.

on them being a percabeth “rip-off”:

honestly, i truly thought this was the case until they started genuinely bickering. that’s when i realized that they’re a completely new archetype to the riordanverse… a VERY fresh and nuanced one at that.

- love for percabeth comes easy, percy’s bullshittery is endearing, annabeth’s know-it-all-ness(???) is endearing, they’re obsessed with each other 100% of the time. even when the other does something stupid it’s always “i was annoyed, but i love them so much”.

- for solangelo, they have moments where they are genuinely just annoyed and frustrated with each other because- say it with me now- they’re three dimensional!!! not every couple is percabeth, not every couple has to be percabeth, and not every couple should be percabeth. they’re very sweet (they’re my favorite ship in all of riordanverse btw), but also pretty unattainable and rare in the real world.

- i also think it should be noted that percy and annabeth went through a lot of their trauma together vs. will and nico, who didn’t experience most of their trauma together… so instead of it bringing them closer like percabeth’s might, it puts a strain on them.

in conclusion: TSATS is my second favorite percy jackson book. (my first being HoH)

CJ never ceases to amaze and impress with their work, and this fic is no exception. I'm not normally one to read Leo/Nico, but I found I really enjoyed their dynamic in this fic, and the use of "sunshine" and "freckles" as nicknames for Will absolutely made me smile. Basically Nico and Leo live in Texas and Will works two jobs, and meets both Nico and Leo separately, and the two both start crushing on him. Shenanigans ensue. I adore this fic.

- Percy is missing an arm (and Jason is missing a finger). They make jokes about a competition of who was left with the least or who still has the most body parts (their traumas, their jokes).

There needs to be more Luke comes back to life and helps the seven during heroes of olympus redemption fics. He still hates the gods, his redemption is learning to control his anger, his trauma and make up for what he did to the other demigods. And learn to trust them. Working with Percy and other demigods to dismantle the system. Also I just get a kick out of 1) Luke involved with Percy level shenanigans. 2)Death jokes. 3) Luke getting a kick out of Percy slowly not giving a fuck anymore

You are so right!!! It’s set up perfectly in Son of Neptune!!! Doors of death are open!!

I’ve thought about this constantly!! On the way to the doors of death they could have come across him wandering around or sabotaging Gaea’s plans!

My favorite idea to bring Luke back would be in at the end of mark of Athena…

Imagine, the seven reach the doors of death and a man in armor is vehemently fighting the monsters trying to escape Tartarus. He is wearing a helmet so no recognizes him at first. The armored man is relieved for the help. Then he sees Percy and Annabeth, and he freezes.

Then annabeth is dragged to Tartarus. It’s not just Percy who runs to her. The helmet falls off and Percy, Annabeth, and Nico all gasp. Luke and Percy try to pull Annabeth up but the weight of the car pulling her down is too much.

This is were the story could go one of two ways. 1.) Luke falls into Tartarus with Percy and Annabeth or 2.) he loses grip of Annabeth right as Percy gives way and is helped out by one of the seven.

Option one has potential for begrudging reconciliation and Luke talking to Percy about the Achlys incident. Percy and Luke bonding over their feelings towards the gods and how the desire to destroy the gods would/has ruined their relationship with their friends and particularly Annabeth. Luke and Annabeth having a conversation about how Thalia’s “death” affected them differently. Luke and her coming to the agreement that while the gods are awful they are the lesser of two evils. Luke would laugh his ass off at the shrine In Tartarus that’s the only source of food.

imagine them finding the winged shoes that Luke gave Percy to drag him into Tartarus. Also imagine the look on the gods faces when the traitor/savior of Olympus literally crawls out of hell to save them again.

Option two Luke would be on a ship with only Nico knowing first hand what he did. He would have a break down over Jason. Thalia had a brother. Luke might have known, but thought he was dead from Thalia crying into his arms about their mother giving baby Jason up to “Hera”. Imagine him looking at Leo and Piper and thinking to himself “I’m the reason theses children are head counselors. I’m the reason they don’t know their older siblings.”

Luke could find out Hazel almost healed Gaea rise in the 30’s comfort her about how sometimes doing the wrong things because of the right reasons and she was deserving of her mother’s love for more than her powers.

Luke could assure Frank that not wanting to be like your godly parent is ok. Not everyone enjoys their parent’s domain and they shouldn’t have to to earn their attention. Luke can help Frank accept that he’s his own person outside of being a demigod and a piece of wood can’t control him if he doesn’t let it.

okay outside of the retcons and continuity errors in TSATS, I think the main part that bugs me is how much the book seems to infantilize Nico, particularly relating to his relationship with Will. Especially because the book seems to remember and then forget again that Nico is autistic only when it’s convenient to infantilize him further.

Nico is randomly nerfed and basically helpless at literally everything the entire book. There is not a single fight EVER in the book that he actually fights without someone else very directly doing the work for him or actively helping him (usually LITERALLY holding his hand), save for that singular time where he sneak-attack kills the monster that just regenerated, but honestly that doesn’t really count as a fight. Or the aeternae, but they literally weren’t attacking him.

He’s in the underworld! He’s been dating Will for a year! How is he completely incapable of the simplest tasks? He tries to help Will - in the infirmary (is helpless at it), patch up his wounds (Will’s condition only worsens), put batteries in a sun lamp (he drops the batteries) - every time he manages to fuck up like he’s never done a single task in his life before. He runs away from every fight or someone else does the work for him because he’s randomly incapable of it for some random excuse. He completely loses several notable powers of his (only ever using one of his powers the entire book, and the only other reference to his powers is his shadow-travel which we don’t actually see) and acts like he’s physically incapable of them even though they logically should be the best answer for a particular situation (geokinesis! dream powers! influencing fear/nightmares! one-tap kill dissolve-you-to-bones! rip souls out of living people!) Yet Will randomly can do everything he can’t - generates two completely new powers to fight Nyx with (alongside bringing back an old power that got forgotten)! Plus a third (growing flowers/plants) that doesn’t even have anything done with it! Can pick the fruit from Persephone’s garden when Nico can’t (LITERALLY IN NICO’S OWN HOME)! Nico panicking? Soothes him without even trying. Will saves Nico in fights like five different times when he’s supposed to be the one with zero combat experience and explicitly isn’t a fighter (and doesn’t even have a weapon) and Nico’s the one who lived on his own as a rogue for three years! They’re in the Underworld, Nico’s home, and Will - WHILE ON DEATH’S DOORSTEP. LITERALLY. - is more powerful than him! For no reason! Nico is a Big 3 kid! He’s SUPPOSED to be extremely op! We don’t even see Nico speak to any true ghosts the entire book and they even acknowledge that he’s Ghost King!

And then on top of it all, the narrative keeps treating Nico as not knowing what’s best for himself and making Will always correct. Or making it so Will is the only one who is able to comfort Nico ever. And have Nico constantly refer to Will with almost exclusively babyish pet-names - “Night-light,” “Care bear” (when logically Nico shouldn’t even know anything about Care Bear lore?), even “sun therapy lamp” isn’t great. The constant “My little ball of darkness” also isn’t great? Like, if you establish that Nico’s extremely short, then it’s not as bad cause then it’s a height joke, but since the book never establishes that it just reads as more infantilizing.

I get they were trying to hype up Will for this book and let him have some action scenes so it wasn’t just Nico dragging him through the Underworld for 50 chapters while he does nothing but be emotional support. And Nico’s powers usually means he very often acts as an almost literal dues ex machina in a lot of plots. But you can still work with that without nerfing Nico so much, or completely infantilizing him! Just because Nico has trauma doesn’t mean he can’t be capable on his own, and that doesn’t have to negate him having people he leans on for support! These things can coexist!
