Book 46: The Borgias and Their Enemies
The all mighty RNG brought 945 History:Europe:Italy. So I chose Christopher Hibbert's The Borgias and Their Enemies: 1431–1519. It essentially covers Rodrigo Borja's ascent to power to Lucretia Borgia's death with some context before and after.
The first chapter describes how Rome was a shithole even for the middle ages before popes returned to it (they had abandoned it for France for a while) and then there were three goddamned popes even, and finally things settled down and popes returned to Rome and they wanted a strong leader over a pious one necessarily, so they elected Rodrigo Borja, made a cardinal at a precipitously young age by his uncle Pope Calixtus III (Not uncommon, about every Pope of that age - even the more "honest" ones- promoted relatives and friends left and right). And let's be frank, Rodriogo- AKA Pope Alexander VI, was not one of the more "honest" ones.
He was the first Pope to admit to his children being his and not "nephews" as the phrase "nepotism" comes from. And I think that reflects his biggest downfall. His son, Cesare was a bastard in every sense of the word. He killed his brother and brother-in-law and a lot of other people and his dad still supported him and used simony increasingly heavily to fund his wars.
The Borgias (Italian for the Spanish Borja) are quite well known for poison so it was very disappointing to find out historically it seems only to be mentioned in Alexander VI's death, rumored as a poisoning attempt gone wrong, but quite possibly just some pedantic disease. Lucrezia Borgia in particular, aside from having an asshole dad and brother seems to be made out as all right if not a little into secular humor for the time. So, big whoop.
SHOULD YOU READ THIS BOOK: Sure, if you want a rundown of Italian history in the 1400s-to early 1500s I'd give it a go. There's a who's who of that period of Italian history including Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Titian, the guy who broke Michelangelo's nose (Pietro Torrigiano), Nicholo Machiavelli, etc. The only thing I'd suggest is getting a map of Italy of the time to figure out what the sam hill is so important about Naples, etc.
ART PROJECT:
In a family known for its licentiousness the Feast of the Chestnuts stands out as a particularly bawdy episode in which they gave an orgy in which courtesans groped naked on their hands and knees in cadlelight searching for roasted chestnuts. Sorry for the poor scale in this, as I had an artistic vision in mind and stuck to it.

I wonder how someone could be so brave. I'm wondering how they manage to live their lives despite having serious issues and big problems. How could they be so brave?
BOOK REVIEW: Something Spectacular by April Avery
Isabelle Dizon, A straight business course student, a prudent lady, and a responsible daughter. But she felt something lacking. She frequently felt she was conforming to her parents' expectations of who she should be, and she began to wonder if that was truly what she desired. Until she met a group of people from a chronically underfunded, nearly dissolved university organization as her uncertainty and longing continued, The Arcadian. Six university students who taught her the value of friendship, the courage that comes with following her dreams, the importance of living in the moment, and how to live according to her will. Isabelle's decision to join Arcadian was not easy; her parents were vehemently opposed. But she took the risk. Isabelle is a very family oriented daughter. That's why I loved how her character develop over the months and years she and Arcadian were together. Even though he is rich, he is smart and knows how to get along with them. Until she met Gavin Nicholo.
Gavin thought her to be BRAVE and everything will be alright, and to be BRAVE enough to show her true self and true passion. Gavin thought her to speak up for herself, break the rules necessary, to make herself prioritize for once.
It's okay to let people in, expose your deepest fears and greatest hopes, and leave the place you caged yourself in to find where you belong.
Arcadians are all happy, until Gavin left without saying goodbye to his friends, especially to Isabelle. Arcadian looked everywhere just to find Gavin. Until they found a medicine called Procarbazine.
It is a chemotherapy medicine used for the treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma and brain cancers.
On Saturday morning, a day after Isabelle found out about the medication, They found Gavin's father, who told them that Gavin dropped out of school because he needed to be in a hospital because he was suffering from a brain tumor.
"Babes." CHAPTER 32. That hurt me as a reader because that one word had a big impact on Isabelle. Isabelle became independent but dependent on Gavin Nicholo. How could Isabelle tell him that she hated him for making her that way? That she is breaking seeing him like that. On a hospital bed taking medication and has cancer.
Even though Gavin is in a wheelchair, he still gave them the warmest smile. Arcadian is the reason why Gavin is fighting. Isabelle is the reason why Gavin is scared of dying.
The Arcadian always visiting Gavin every weekend.
They went to the hospitals rooftop. Shouting their dreams while watching the stars. Until Gavin said..
"Good night" , "See you next weekend?"
yet, he died at 12:30 AM.
A few hours after shouting their dreams. A few hours after he said he had a great day and he wanted to rest.

As a reader, I really find this story great. To be honest, this story made me cry for a week. And even though it's been almost years since I read it. it still hurts me.
It has a lot of life lessons. It encouraged me to always be brave. To always take risks and be yourself. That it's okay to be scared. That it's okay to feel, to cry, to range, and to mourn for emotions that have been hidden or dreams that are fading. We may be misfits, society's outcasts, but there's always a place where we belong with people who will understand.
People assume they have a lot of time. We often take things for granted because they will always be there. Life is short, and the universe is so vast. We are significant and insignificant at the same time.
Something Spectacular is about finding your true self in the midst of the noise of others telling you who you should be.
Anything could be an adventure..

Viral Videos and Their impact
Significant headlines and widespread debate were generated by a viral video taken in January 2019. The viral video displays two groups: Covington Catholic high school students from Kentucky as well as Native American Vietnam veteran Nathan Phillips. This video spread to many individuals, was placed on many platforms, and demonstrated how easily mainstream media can influence public opinion.
This video was initially thought to be a disturbing and unsettling interaction between mostly white teenagers from Covington Catholic High School and a Native American elder. If we view the video, we can see others chanting with the Native American people, which can be seen as disrespectful because they are Native American chants. There were many people who painted these students as impolite and confrontational. The public had mixed views about this situation, both good and bad.
For right-wing media outlets, they offered a more supportive narrative. But not supportive of the Native Americans but of the students. Some boys who attended this day claimed that it was free speech and that they had the right to exercise that right of choice. They were using their MAGA "Make America Great Again '' hats as their right to free speech. This also includes "Nicholos Sandmann'' who in an NBC News YouTube video, "Teen At Center Of Protest: He Was Not Disrespectful To Native Americans, states that same exact reasoning. He believes he did no wrong but simply smiled as he looked Nathan Phillips in the eyes while he loudly chanted.
For left-wing media outlets, most seemed to really take the video into consideration by analyzing the footage. The footage that was shown had students appearing to mock Nathan. This video was bigger than discussed, as there is a huge cultural problem in this world, and people like these students are part of the problem. It is a reflection of white America and who they truly are under their red caps. In an article called "The real politics behind the Covington Catholic controversy, explained", it states, "It's clear some of the kids were confused by Phillips; it’s equally clear some of the kids were making racist gestures." It just shows how disrespectful many were, and yet many are ignoring that fact.
From an unbiased perspective, at first glance, you see white students with MAGA hats singing, dancing, and chanting in peaceful Native-American protests. You see Sandmann step up to an elder, and here is your viral face-off. In my perspective, they all seem like privileged white and ignorant children. I never saw a smile creep on Phillips's face, and so that automatically gives me a sense of the situation. The tone is that the situation was not okay and seemed disrespectful in my eyes. But it is never okay to jump to conclusions because, while there is a short video showing one perspective, there may be others that change your whole view, and you end up feeling foolish. From a biased point of view, I DO NOT SUPPORT ANY KIND OF TRUMP SUPPORT WHATSOEVER. I lean far left, and I will stay there loud and proud. While I do believe in not rushing to assume, how do you expect us not to when the hat you wear represents hatred for minorities and shows me you immediately have ill intentions?
